Résumé :
Sedimentation is a process that erodes and transports soil particles into water bodies. Sediment reduces storage capacity, lifespan of stream basins, water quality. The Ubelle stream was 465m length, 25 to 45m width and 60m depth. The stream basin served the people of the community as a multipurpose stream for fishing, swimming, laundry and sources of water for domestic uses. Soil analysis showed, excess sediment has been transported into the stream basin within a period of 15 years. Siltation occupied 57.07m, out of the 60m, leaving 1.00 to 2.93m in depth. This reduced the water storage and w a t e r q u a l i t y . Soil samples analysis w a s dominated by very fine sand, ranging between 84.08 to 85.57 %. These indicate silty-clay soils silted the stream basin. Porosity ranged from 6 to 14%. This is low, indicating the soil is dense with low volume of voids relative to the volume of solids; meaning, it is more porous, less cohesive; and prone to erosive forces. Bulk density ranged from 2.27- 2.50g/cm 3 . This is high compared to average standard values of 1.33g/cm 3 . High bulk density reduces infiltration of water into the soil and increases overland flow resulting in erosion. Therefore the stream basin was silted by silty-clay soils. Being a multipurpose stream; the physico-chemical parametres of the stream water was not suitable for drinking, but suitable for aquaculture. Erosion control measures like vegetative covers, afforestation along the river bed will avoid more soil loss. The stream water should be treated before use for drinking and other domestic uses.

Résumé :
The coastal area of Albania is characterized by specific constructions, parts of which are the coastal wetlands and its lagooning. Lagoons are very specific bodies of water that acquire an interesting status along with the indisputable values they have. The value of knowing the physico-chemical properties of the water of the Narta Lagoon is related to many processes that occur within the lagoon and in the environments around it. The study was carried out on the Narta Lagoon to identify the chemical and physical characteristics of the water. For the determination of the physico-chemical properties, a certain methodology has been followed, which includes the establishment of a network of five stations for sampling the water of the lagoon and the determination of the level of certain physico-chemical parameters. The physico-chemical parameters that were determined are: temperature (T), pH, dissolved oxygen (O2), BOD5, S%, Cl-, ECw, NH4+, NO2-, P-PO43-, hardness. The most pronounced differences of the physico-chemical levels are those that belong to the data of the south-east station. According to the level of different components for all the stations, a degree of homogeneity in the physico-chemical composition is observed. Only the physico-chemical feature of the water at south-eastern part of the lagoon makes a difference, which is related to the influence of the urban discharge channel of the city of Vlora. The physico-chemical parameters that interpret pollution such as: dissolved oxygen (O2), BOD5, NH4+, NO2-, NO3-, PO43-, hardness is higher than in other stations of the lagoon.

The quality of life in water bodies depends on their physico-chemical properties and biodiversity. These physico-chemical properties are being disturbed by continuous addition of industrial, municipal and agricultural wastes which make them unfit for different organisms. This study describes the physico-chemical factors in soil and water of all sampled wetlands and the relationship among them in wetland ecosystem. All these analysis were done by using analytical techniques as described by standard methods for examination of water and wastewater. Physico-chemical parameters of water and soil also interlinked and correlated among each other. Sometimes these parameters work as a cycle to maintain the equilibrium in the ecosystem. Higher level of research work is needed to control the source of pollution to wetlands. By controlling the physico-chemical parameters of habitat, the diversity, density and richness of various wetland dependent species can be controlled in wetland ecosystem.

Résumé :
Borno State is the epicenter of Boko Haram crisis which displaced millions of individuals. Maiduguri metropolis which became the principal refuge centre, has witnessed a rapid demographic change, land use and economic activities resulting into intense irrigational practice along the bank of river Nggada. This may result into changes in the physico – chemical parameters of the aquatic ecosystem and the dynamism may disrupt phytoplantonic community. The study was aimed at assessing the seasonal variability of phytoplanktons in non-point source polluted river Nggada of Maiduguri. Water samples for physico -chemical analysis were collected bi-weekly for a period of 11 months at three sampling stations. Physico-chemical parameters, including Dissolve Oxygen (DO), Dissolved Nitrate concentration, Dissolved Phosphorus Concentration, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Surface Water Temperature (SWT) and potential Hydrogen (pH) were determined using standard procedures. Results indicated that all physico – chemical parameters except temperature, DO and pH of the river during both irrigational and non-irrigational regimes were slightly above the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency’s (NESREA) permissible limits. A total of 7 classes (Cyanophyceae Chlorophyceae, Cryptophyceace, Euglenophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Crysophyceace and Rhodophyceae) and 16 genera of phytoplanktons were identified. The results further revealed that the irrigation activities (dry season) have impacted on the physico – chemical parameters (pH, DO, TDS, nitrate and phosphate concentrations) of the study area. Remarkably, the changes in the physico – chemical parameters during the irrigational regime (dry season) have not impacted on the abundance and distribution of phytoplanktons. Hence, the non-point pollutants influenced the physico – chemical parameters of the river butalgal abundance and distribution were not influenced by the changes in the physico – chemical parameters of the river. The study thus, recommends the continuous monitoring and systematic effort to conserve the bio-resources and water quality of the river

Résumé :
Mango (Mangiferaindica L) fruits were consumed for their pleasant taste and flavour. It rich sources of vitamins A, B and C. However, there is huge loss of the mango fruit during storage due to lack of temperature management and use of slow cooling rate. The objective of this study is therefore to investigate the effect of cooling rates on physical and chemical properties of mango fruits subjected to different cooling rates. The study was lied down with one factors randomized complete block design (RBCD) and replicated three times. Mango fruits were subjected to three different cooling rates (0.001, 0.019 and 0.087) through storage at different storage temperature (-1, 4 and -18°C) and evaluated in terms of physicochemical properties of the fruits during the storage. Data were analyzed by using Minitab software and the effect of cooling rate on all response variables measured was analyzed using Analysis of variance and the significance terms were accepted at 95% (p <0.05) confidence level. The result indicated that mango fruits subjected to different cooling rate exhibited significant change for all evaluated parameters. The mango fruits stored at highest cooling rates (0.087) preserves moisture contents from (70.57-64.45% ) and at lowest cooling rates, moisture reduced from (64.73-60.45%) pH increase (3.7-3.78) and Titratable acidity (TA) decrease (0.35-0.30 %) , total solid soluble (TSS) increase from (8.76-11.25 degree brix) weight loss increase (13.6-19.4%) and the ash content of mango fruits stored at highest cooling rates changed from (8.8-6.8%). This could be due to the fact that highest cooling rate (0.087) preserves physico-chemical properties. During this study because of some constraints, some parameters were not included. Therefore, based on the limitation of the work, further research is needed to study the effect of cooling rates on vitamin (A,C and B) and minerals and (protein, carbohydrates, fat), and beta-carotene of mango fruits which are not conducted in this research due to budget and time limitations, large scale cooling room needed. Generally, it was concluded that, highest loss of mango fruits occurred due to inappropriate storage temperature and highest cooling rates (0.087) preserve physico-chemical properties during storage periods.

Résumé :
In an attempt to improve soil physico-chemical properties for subsequent production of crop, the potential of compost extract was investigated along with effect of its processing parameters on some soil physico-chemical properties after harvest. This compost extract (liquid organic fertilizer) was produced from composted chicken manure under three processing parameters. The parameters are compost/water ratio (1:6, 1:4, and 1:3), immersion period (24, 48 and 72 h) and water temperature (25, 35 and 45˚C). The application of compost extract made was applied to the soil by means of an improvised drip irrigation system to produced two vegetables (A. cruentus and C. argentea) via pot experiment in a greenhouse. The soil physico-chemical properties were analyzed before planting and after harvest using standard methods. The result showed an improvement in the soil physico-chemical properties after harvest. The study shows that processing parameters under different compost/water ratio, immersion period and water temperature significantly affected soil physico-chemical properties. The highest physico-chemical properties of pH (6.53 and 6.59), EC (2.42 and 2.47 mS cm-1), TN (1.68 and 1.79%), TP (7.24 and 7.34 g kg-1) and TK (7.49 and 7.73 g kg-1) were observed for A. cruentus and C. argentea soils, correspondingly after harvest. These were obtained for 1:3 compost/water ratio at 72 h immersion period under water temperature of 25˚C. Hence, compost extract produced was found to be suitable for improvement of soil physico-chemical properties even for subsequent production of vegetable in another planting seasons without any additional soil amendment.

Résumé :
The study measures the relationship between physico-chemical variables with the cell density of phytoplankton in nursery, growout and broodstock ponds of fish. This study was conducted at Natore Government Fish Farm in Bangladesh from January to June, 2012. The observed physico-chemical variables like water temperature, transparency, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia-nitrogen, total alkalinity and total hardness were found within the standard ranges. Phytoplankton belonging to bacillariophyceae, chlorophyceae, cyanophyceae and euglenophyceae were found among the ponds but euglenophyceae with highest abundance was recorded in almost all the ponds. Total abundance of different groups of phytoplankton was recorded as mean (±SD) cell density (cell/l) (62.77±2.16)×104, (47.22±0.69)×104, and (77.12±3.42)×104 in nursery pond, growout pond and broodstock pond, respectively. Overall phytoplankton abundance was more in broodstock pond than in others. Total phytoplankton density has exhibited significantly positive correlation with dissolved oxygen (DO) and inverse relation with water temperature, pH, ammonia-nitrogen and total alkalinity in case of nursery pond. For growout pond, total phytoplankton density has exhibited significantly positive correlation with temperature and transparency, and significantly negative correlation with other physico-chemical characteristics. In case of broodstock pond, total phytoplankton density has no significant relationship with any physico-chemical variables of water. Résumé :
Surface water pollution through the discharge of untreated wastewater is on the increase globally. Efforts made using conventional techniques had not yielded the needed results. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of some native aquatic plants for the removal of some physico–chemical parameters from car wash wastewater effluents in Yenagoa metropolis. The plants used for this study were lemna minor, nymphaea nouchalli, pistia-stratiotes, eichhornia crassipes and ceratophyllum demersum; while the physico-chemical parameters investigated in this study include pH, DO, COD, BOD5, NO3, PO4 and turbidity. The wastewater samples collected from car wash bays were analysed to determine the level of the physico-chemical parameters concentrations using standard methods. The experiment was conducted in a green house for 42 days retention period. The results indicated that the cultured plants reduced the physico-chemical parameters to a minimum level, except DO, which increased in concentration. Therefore, they are considered good bioremediators of the parameters under review and the bioremediation potentials of the plants are in the order of P. stratiotes > L. minor > E. crassipes > N. nouchalli> C. demersum. It is therefore recommended that these plants should be used to treat wastewater effluents based on the investigated physico-chemical parameters.

Résumé :
This study focused on the physico-chemical characterization of Lake Togbadji, located in southwestern Benin. The methodological approach followed was as follows: literature review, sampling and in-situ measurements, analysis of collected samples, and data processing. Parameters such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, TDS, and ORP were determined in-situ, while color, TSS, and other parameters were analyzed in the laboratory. The obtained results were subjected to descriptive statistics, the Wilcoxon test for two samples to determine the impact of different locations on the abundance of microbiological contaminants, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) using R software version 3.5.0 to group pollution parameters according to different levels and sources of contamination. From our results, it was found that the main sources of pollution in Lake Togbadji are runoff water, various wastewater discharges from artisanal activities, livestock farming, and open defecation. On a physico-chemical level, the recorded levels do not suggest pollution of the lake.

Résumé :
Measurements of titratable acidity, soluble solids, firmness, ethylene production and weight loss were made for five apple cultivars held in cold storage for 100 days. Carbosieve G in the traps of the enrichment column, which has only a moderate affinity for light hydrocarbons, was found to meet the requirements for the optimal thermal desorption of ethylene (130°C for 2 minutes) from the enrichment column to the analytical column. ANOVA showed significant differences in all these five parameters between the five cultivars Golden Delicious Reinders, Resista, Topaz, Meteor and Rubinstep, and also in the course of storage. In all cases, the changes in titratable acids measured during storage were especially significant, but the observed changes in sugar levels, as measured by refractometry, were too variable to be useful in this context. High rates of ethylene production impacted probably only indirectly on the loss of firmness and the other parameters which were measured. Discriminant analysis of the measurements of firmness, ethylene production and titratable acid provided the best means of differentiating the cultivars, although Golden Delicious Reinders and Resista still could not be completely separated. Other parameters (soluble solids and loss in weight) did not contribute to the discriminant resolution.

Résumé :
Abstract. The design and evaluation of replicated artificial mesocosms are presented in the context of a thirteen month experiment on the effects of ocean acidification on tropical coral reefs. They are defined here as (semi)-closed (i.e. with or without water change from the reef) mesocosms in the laboratory with a more realistic physico-chemical environment than microcosms. Important physico-chemical parameters (i.e. pH, pO2, pCO2, total alkalinity, temperature, salinity, total alkaline earth metals and nutrients availability) were successfully monitored and controlled. Daily variations of irradiance and pH were applied to approach field conditions. Results highlighted that it was possible to maintain realistic physico-chemical parameters, including daily changes, into artificial mesocosms. On the other hand, the two identical artificial mesocosms evolved differently in terms of global community oxygen budgets although the initial biological communities and physico-chemical parameters were comparable. Artificial reef mesocosms seem to leave enough degrees of freedom to the enclosed community of living organisms to organize and change along possibly diverging pathways.
