SummaryTo measure lateral and medial tibial plateau angle values in isolated canine tibiae and to compare lateral and medial tibial plateau angle values between dogs based on sex and breed.Tibiae of 90 dogs from 24 different breeds were used. Photographs were taken of the medial and lateral aspects of the tibiae for measurement of the medial and lateral tibial plateau angles. Additionally, the medial tibial plateau angle was measured from radiographs of the tibiae. Two-way analysis of variance was used to test the effects of side, sex and breed on the medial and lateral tibial plateau angles as measured from photographs as well as the medial tibial plateal angles as measured from radiographs. The photographic and radiographic medial tibial plateau angles were compared by paired t-test, whereas the medial and lateral photographic tibial plateau angles were compared by t-test.When all dogs were included in the analysis, the difference between the mean medial tibial plateau angle (24.0 ± 3.19°) and the mean lateral tibial plateau angle (25.5 ± 3.84°) as measured from photographs was significant (p <0.05). The difference in the photographic medial tibial plateau angle between male and female dogs was significant (p <0.05), whereas the difference in the photographic lateral tibial plateau angle between sexes was not significant. There was a significant difference between the medial and lateral tibial plateau angles as measured from photographs in male dogs (p <0.05) but not in female dogs. Breed comparisons also showed significant differences for the photographic lateral tibial plateau angle (p <0.05).The axial rotation of the femoral condyles on the tibial plateau is probably affected by the discrepancy between the medial and lateral tibial plateau angles, and this difference in certain breeds might influence the prevalence of cranial cruciate ligament disease.

The cranial vertical angle (CVA) and cranial rotation angle (CRA) are used in clinical settings because they can be measured on lateral photographs of the head and neck. We aimed to clarify the relationship between CVA and CRA photographic measurements and radiographic cervical spine alignment. Twenty-six healthy volunteers were recruited for this study. Lateral photographs and cervical spine radiographs were obtained in the sitting position. The CVA and CRA were measured using lateral photographs of the head and neck. The C2-7 sagittal vertical axis (SVA), cervical lordosis (C2-7), and occipito-C2 lordosis (O-C2) were measured using radiographic imaging as a standard method of evaluating cervical spine alignment. Correlations between the CVA and CRA on photographs and cervical spine alignment on radiographs were analyzed. The CVA and SVA were significantly negatively correlated (ρ = −0.51; p < 0.05). Significant positive correlations were found between CVA and C2-7 (ρ = 0.59; p < 0.01) and between CRA and O-C2 (ρ = 0.65; p < 0.01). Evaluating the CVA and CRA on photographs may be useful for ascertaining head and neck alignment in the mid-lower and upper parts of the sagittal plane.

Changes in underground environments have been predicted by investigating underground bedrock conditions and analyzing the shapes of discontinuities in the rocks. The most commonly used method is to drill a borehole, insert a camera inside and capture the wall of the borehole in a photograph to investigate the discontinuities. However, if the images of the borehole cannot be captured, the characteristics of the discontinuities in the bedrock are analyzed by capturing the drilling cores in photographs. In this case, considerable time is required to analyze the drilling cores with the naked eye and measure the attitudes of the discontinuities developed in the cores in detail. Moreover, the results may vary depending on the researcher’s perspective. To overcome these limitations, this study develops a program for analyzing photographs of drilling cores. The program can automatically identify discontinuities in drilling cores and measure the attitudes through linear fitting using only drilling core photographs. In addition, we apply the program to practical field data to verify its applicability. We found that the program could provide more accurate and objective information on drilling cores than the currently used method and could more effectively organize the characteristics of fractures in the study area.

Summary This paper discusses the usage of done in ‘she’s done send the photographs’ as a marker of completive aspect in the variety of English spoken on the island of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean. The article outlines the various positions scholars have taken with reference to the diachronic status of ‘completive done’ and discusses the structural properties of the (aux)+ done V construction in Tristan da Cunha English (TdCE). The aim of the analysis is twofold: first, to present a structural and semantic analysis of done as a marker of perfective aspect, with the aim of investigating if TdCE done has taken a different syntactic and semantic trajectory vis-à-vis its use in other varieties; and second, to explain the sociohistorical origins of done in this variety of South Atlantic English. The comparative analysis shows that particularly the structural properties of TdCE done differ significantly from those of other varieties; the diachronic examination shows the complexity of determining the contributions of transplant varieties, mixing of colonial varieties of English, and independent developments that originate in creolisation and/or language contact. Zusammenfassung Der folgende Artikel untersucht den Gebrauch des englischen Partizips done, zum Beispiel in ‘she’s done send the photographs’, als kompletiven Aspektmarker in einem auf Tristan da Cunha im Südatlantik gesprochenen Dialekt der englischen Sprache. Der Artikel fasst die diversen diachronischen Standpunkte zusammen, zu welchen andere Studien zu diesem Thema gekommen sind, und untersucht die strukturellen Eigenschaften der (aux)+ done V Konstruktion in Tristan da Cunha English (TdCE). Die Analyse hat die folgenden zwei Hauptziele: erstens, die strukturellen und semantischen Charakteristika von done als kompletiven Aspektmarker aufzuzeigen, speziell auf die Frage hin, ob die strukturellen Eigenschaften von TdCE done sich deutlich von anderen Dialekten unterscheiden; und zweitens, die soziohistorischen Ursprünge von done in diesem südatlantischen Dialekt darzulegen. Die Komparative Analyse zeigt, dass sich TdCE done hauptsächlich in seinen strukturellen Eigenschaften von anderen Dialekten unterscheidet. Die diachronische Untersuchung zeigt die Komplexität der Darlegung von individuellen Beiträgen verschiedener exportierter Sprachformen, von der Durchmischung von kolonialen Dialekten der englischen Sprache, und von unabhängigen Entwicklungen, die ihren Ursprung in Kreolisierung und Sprachkontakt haben. L’article commence avec un résumé des positions prises par d’autres linguistes qui ont travaillé sur cet usage distinct de done; il présente les positions diverses sur le statut diachronique de ce marqueur, et ensuite examine les propriétés structurelles de la construction (aux)+ done V qu’on trouve dans l’anglais de Tristan da Cunha (TdCE). L’analyse vise (1) à présenter un examen structurel et sémantique de done comme marqueur complétif, qui vise surtout à éclairer la question suivante: est-ce que done en TdCE a suivi une trajectoire syntaxique et sémantique différente de done dans d’autres dialectes anglais? et (2) à expliquer les origines sociohistoriques de done dans cette variété d’Anglais sud-atlantique. The purpose of the present study is to establish a correlation between gonial angle and freeway space using lateral profile photographs in dentulous individuals. The study includes a total of 150 participants within the age range of 20 – 30 years, of which one twenty-five were females and twenty-five were males. No restrictions were imposed with regard to the presence of malocclusion. The participants were informed about the study through participant information sheet and signed consent was obtained. The study showed a mild negative correlation between Freeway space and gonial angle, indicating that when gonial angle increases freeway space decreases in both class I and class II participants. The study also showed that the freeway space was found to be more in Angle’s class II dentate participantsThe study concludes that there was a statistically significant difference between freeway space between Angle’s Class I and Class II malocclusion. The freeway space in individuals with Angle’s class II malocclusion was greater as compared to that with Angle’s class I malocclusion. The gonial angle was observed to be more acute in participants with Angle’s class II malocclusion as compared to that in participants with Angle’s class 1 malocclusion. Lateral profile photographs can be used as a tool to predict freeway space in patients with Angle’s class I malocclusion.

Numerous photographs of live fishes posted by anglers and divers on social media and citizen science databases are important sources of information for ichthyological research. However, validating records that extend the known ecology and bathymetric or geographic distribution of species should rely on a rigorous identification process. The family Gobiidae, with their small size, superficial resemblance among species and high species richness are particularly difficult to identify. Therefore, the identification from photographs of live individuals of Mediterranean marine gobies from the continental shelf was studied. A dichotomous identification key is provided based on photographs of live individuals, allowing positive identification of 41 out of the 66 species reviewed in this publication. Then, for all 66 species we provide a brief description of important characters, which can be used for provisional identification for those species that could not be positively identified using the key. Pending further progress in identification of live individuals, we suggest that records extending the known geographic and ecological species distribution be taken into account only if they could be validated using the dichotomous identification key.

Evidence for English settlement in the Tweed Basin from the seventh to ninth centuries is mainly circumstantial, but on the south side of the Tweed, near Sprouston, aerial photography since 1970 has shown a township which can be positively identified as Anglian. The cropmark evidence is transcribed and tentatively subdivided into three broad periods (prehistoric, Romano-British/early historic, Anglian). Each is appraised and the elements identified are qualified by reference to parallels drawn from a limited radius in North Britain. The likely origins and status of the township are discussed; it may have functioned as an urbs regis or royal centre, one of the first to have been founded in the Tweed Basin during the westward English expansion in the late-sixth or early-seventh century.

Durant la décennie 1980, des photographes non-blancs et des femmes photographes Noirs imaginent des formes d’opposition à un milieu qui les ignore obstinément. Individuellement et collectivement, les photographes Noirs se confrontent aux multiples dénégations au moyen de gestes de résistance. Ensemble, mais seuls, ils vont faire scène. Instigateurs d’une multitude d’actes, ils deviennent agents de leur réalisation en tant qu’artistes-photographes. La scène produit un empouvoirement et l’empouvoirement façonne la scène. Cette thèse raconte les stratégies mises en place pour défier le statu quo. Cette thèse propose ainsi d’analyser la formation de cette scène à travers deux gestes fondamentaux : la publication (première partie) et l’exposition (deuxième partie). Dans un premier temps, l’étude des objets imprimés révèlent les mécanismes d’exclusion et d’inclusion de ces individus et indique leur rôle essentiel à la rencontre, aux échanges, à l’expérimentation, au débat, à l’élaboration théorique et la monstration des productions. À cet effet, nous examinons trois magazines de photographes : Camerawork, Ten.8 et Polareyes ; et commentons l’absence de livres de photographes. Dans un deuxième temps, l’étude de la nécessité de montrer son travail sur des cimaises, à travers des expositions, nous permet d’identifier une attitude du « faire soi-même » où les artistes deviennent commissaires et coordinateurs d’espaces de monstration. La thèse se termine sur l’institutionnalisation de la scène à travers l’analyse de l’évolution de l’Association des Photographes Noirs vers la création d’une organisation, Autograph ABP. À travers ces deux axes principaux, cette thèse appréhende l’émergence d’une scène malgré une société qui s’oppose à elle et fait le récit de sa lente inclusion dans le monde de la photographie britannique de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle
During the long 1980s, non-white photographers and Black women photographers imagined forms of opposition to a milieu that consistently ignored them. Individually and collectively, Black photographers challenged continual denial with gestures of resistance. Together, and on their own they made their scene. Instigators of a multitude of acts, they became the agents of their being recognised as artist-photographers. The scene produced an empowerment which in turn shaped that scene. This thesis recounts the strategies they put in place to challenge the status quo. The creation of this scene occurred through two fundamental axes: firstly publications; and secondly exhibitions. In the first place, the study of printed matter reveals the mechanisms of exclusion and inclusion of these individuals, and indicates their essential role in encounters, exchanges, experimentation, debate, theoretical elaboration and the display of visual productions. To this end, we examine three photographers' magazines: Camerawork, Ten.8 and Polareyes; and comment on the absence of photographers' books. In the second place, our study of the need to show work on walls, through exhibitions, enables us to identify a "Do It-Yourself" attitude in which artists become curators and coordinators of spaces. The thesis concludes on the institutionalization of the scene through the history of the Association of Black Photographers as an organization. Our pivot is the emergence of a scene despite a society opposed to it, and tells the story of its slow inclusion in the world of British photography in the second half of the 20th century

Il est question de l'identification tant de la photographie protegee, de sa definition et de son originalite, que du titulaire du droit d'auteur afferent, qu'il detienne ce droit a titre originaire ou a la suite d'un transfert. Le regime auquel est soumise une photographie protegee comprend les prerogatives du droit d'auteur, le droit pecuniaire et le droit moral, leurs durees et les sanctions dont elles sont assorties. Il est aussi fait etat des obstacles a l'exploitation du droit d'auteur sur une photographie, a savoir les conflits avec le droit d'auteur afferent a une oeuvre que la photographie reproduit ou encore avec le droit a la vie privee soit de la personne photographiee, soit du proprietaire du bien qui est photographie. La france etant un pays de droit civil, alors que l'angleterre, les etats-unis et le canada sont des pays de tradition juridique anglo-saxonne, la comparaison de ces deux systemes sous-tend l'etude du probleme plus particulier que pose la photographie
The copyright protection of photographs is studied according to the rules concerning the existence of copyright and the legal regimes of protected works in four countries. The identification of a copyrighted photograph, its definition and its originality, and of its owner, whether as holder of the original title or of a subsequent one, is examined. The legal regimes pertaining to a photograph consist of the copyright prerogatives, that is the economic and moral rights, of their durations and of the recourses available to a copyright owner. The obstacles that a copyright owner may encounter are also dealt with: conflicts with the copyright held in a photographed work and with the privacy and publicity rights of a person who is or whose possessions are photographed. Since the french legal tradition is civilian, whereas england, the united states and canada are common law countries, the comparison between both legal systems underlies the study of the particular issue that is photography

A raça Puro Sangue Lusitano (PSL) tem vindo a demonstrar ao longo dos anos a sua versatilidade, comprovada pelos seus resultados em disciplinas equestres tão díspares como Saltos de Obstáculos, Equitação de Trabalho, Tauromaquia, Atrelagem e Dressage. Em equinos, a conformação pode ser considerada um indicador da capacidade atlética, nível de performance e resistência à doença ortopédica, e a avaliação da conformação é normalmente um dos primeiros critérios de seleção. Este trabalho foi realizado numa amostra de 51 cavalos PSL (38 machos e 13 fêmeas) de diversas coudelarias (41 Alter Real, 7 Companhia das Lezírias e 3 de outras coudelarias) com idades compreendidas entre os 4 e os 30 anos. Os objetivos foram a avaliação da conformação através de medidas lineares, ângulos e razões, comparando dois métodos de medição (clássico e fotométrico). Estudou-se a influência da idade, género e origem nas variáveis estudadas, bem como as relações destas entre si e com os itens de classificação morfológica (avaliação subjetiva). Algumas características incluídas no padrão da raça PSL podem ser avaliadas facilmente por métodos de avaliação objetivos, mas caso não seja possível cumprir a padronização necessária para a aplicação do método fotométrico, é preferível a aplicação do método clássico mais moroso, mas mais fácil de aplicar. No futuro, pretende-se encontrar indicadores precoces do potencial do animal, que possam ser utilizados no programa de seleção da raça.
ABSTRACT - Conformation analysis based on objective methods on the Purebred Lusitano horse - The Puro Sangue Lusitano (PSL) has demonstrated over the years its versatility, proven by the results achieved in diverse equestrian disciplines such as Show Jumping, Working Equitation, Bullfighting, Driving and Dressage. In horses, conformation can be considered an indicator of athletic ability, performance level and resistance to orthopedic disease, and conformation assessment is usually one of the first selection criteria. This work was carried out on a sample of 51 PSL horses (38 males and 13 females) from several stud farms (41 Alter Real, 7 Companhia das Lezírias and 3 from other stud farms) aged between 4 and 30 years. The objectives were to evaluate the conformation through linear measurements, angles and ratios, comparing two measurement methods (classical and photometric). The influence of age, gender and origin on the studied variables was investigated, as well as their relationship with each other and with the items of morphological classification (subjective evaluation). Some characteristics included in the PSL breed standard can easily be evaluated by objective evaluation methods. However, if it is not possible to ensure the standardization required for the application of photometric method, it is better to apply the longer, but easier to apply classical method. In the future, we intend to find early indicators of the potential of the animal, which can be used in the breed selection program.

Abstract This paper aims at discussing the value of researcher-generated visual methods in studying migration. It focuses on photography as a data collection method, and the problem is presented in the context of researching urban and rural arenas of exercising transnational belonging by migrants and their descendants in new and ancestral homelands. Photography is approached here as a sensorial experience mediating a relationship between the researcher and the participants. The author argues that the relationships occurring around photo-taking in the field are as important as the data collected intentionally. Moreover, the chapter discusses ethical questions prompted by the employment of visual methods, problematizing them in a context of different social, cultural and national settings. With this chapter, the author attempts to answer a question whether researcher-generated visual data can open new angles of analyses of migrants’ life-words and how the employment of visual methods can influence theoretical perspectives within migration studies.

This chapter builds on scholarly inquiry about Baudelaire and the noise of Paris by setting noise in dialogue with the technological. Baudelaire’s ambivalence about photography is reconsidered through the frame of acoustics. These particular angles on Baudelaire provide novel approaches to the poet, his texts, and more broadly to the beginnings of modern audiovisual media relations in the nineteenth century. Sounds of the past mingle with sounds of the modern city in Baudelaire’s life, writings, and in his friendship and sometimes rivalry with the photographer Félix Nadar (1820–1910), who spoke of an “acoustic daguerreotype,” a means of “seeing noise,” decades before the invention of mechanical sound recording. While this chapter engages with Walter Benjamin’s writings and recent scholarship on Baudelaire’s relationship with the noise of Paris, the chapter approaches Baudelaire and nineteenth-century Paris from a different angle, namely the nexus of optical devices, phonography, and Félix Nadar.

In the process of transferring meaning, visual narrative arts such as painting, theater, dance, architecture, photography, cinema, and television are built on language images. This language, which is called the visual language, makes sense with visuals, that is, the visual language. Lighting is one of the vital elements in the creation of images as well as natural light. The director makes formal arrangements on light and lighting, one of the important elements of cinematography, creating meaning and especially fear with images. Camera angles are also important in the installation of the fear element. These elements of fear are constructed from an artistic and aesthetic point of view. In the visual narrative, light and camera angles are revealed in aesthetic structure that provides desired effect besides obtaining a certain lighting and shooting process. The aim of this study is to investigate how two cinematographic elements such as illumination and camera angles are used to create meaning in images.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Emergency personnel and first responders have the opportunity to document crash scenes while evidence is still recent. The growth of the drone market and the efficiency of documentation with drones has led to an increasing prevalence of aerial photography for incident sites. These photographs are generally of high resolution and contain valuable information including roadway evidence such as tire marks, gouge marks, debris fields, and vehicle rest positions. Being able to accurately map the captured evidence visible in the photographs is a key process in creating a scaled crash-scene diagram. Image rectification serves as a quick and straightforward method for producing a scaled diagram. This study evaluates the precision of the photo rectification process under diverse roadway geometry conditions and varying camera incidence angles.</div></div>

Abstract Photographic observations of the boiling phenomena have played an important role in gaining insight into the boiling mechanism. This paper presents a brief historical review of the available literature on the photographic studies in pool and flow boiling. This is followed by the results of the photographic studies conducted in the author’s laboratory on liquid droplets impinging on a heated surface. Liquid-vapor interface and contact line movements are observed through a high speed camera at high resolution. The effect of surface roughness an surface temperature on dynamic advancing and receding contact angles has been studied. Also, the effect of rapid evaporation on advancing and receding contact angles, liquid-vapor interface motion, and dryout front propagation have been investigated.

Accident reconstructions often rely on measurements of tire marks left on the roadway surface. However, accurate identification and measurement of these marks can be challenging when the marks are faint, as is often the case with braking marks left by vehicles equipped with anti-lock (ABS) brakes. This paper describes an image processing technique that exploits differences in the polarization of reflected light to create images that significantly enhance tire mark visualization. The technique requires multiple photographs taken from the same perspective, but with a polarizing filter oriented at different angles. Based on these digital images, the state of polarization of light can be determined for each pixel. A new image can then be created in which the intensity of the image is proportional to the state of light polarization. Results are presented using ABS tire marks, and demonstrate that under certain conditions the resulting image more clearly differentiates tire marks than conventional photographs or even contrast enhanced conventional photographs.

Photogrammetry has been in use for over one hundred and fifty years. This research considers how digital image capture using a medium range Nikon Digital SLR camera, can be transformed into 3D virtual spatial images, and together with additive manufacturing (AM) technology, geometric representations of the original artefact can be fabricated. The research has focused on the use of photogrammetry as opposed to laser scanning (LS), investigating the shift from LS use to a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera exclusively. The basic photogrammetry equipment required is discussed, with the main objective being simplicity of execution for eventual realisation of physical products. As the processing power of computers has increased and become widely available, at affordable prices, software programs have improved, so it is now possible to digitally combine multi-view photographs, taken from 360°, into 3D virtual representational images. This has now led to the possibility of 3D images being created without LS intervention. Two methods of digital data capture are employed and discussed, in acquiring up to 130 digital data images, taken from different angles using the DSLR camera together with the specific operating conditions in which to photograph the objects. Three case studies are documented, the first, a modern clay sculpture, whilst the other two are 3000 year old Egyptian clay artefacts and the objects were recreated using AM technology. It has been shown that with the use of a standard DSLR camera and computer software, 2D images can be converted into 3D virtual video replicas as well as solid, geometric representation of the originals.

We propose a system that helps patients of the Duchenne muscular dystrophy to take photos as a part of rehabilitations. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a progressive disease. The disease makes it difficult for patients to walk as their muscles contract and their muscles progressively lose strength.Since the condition of the progresses of the disease and the experience of daily life is different from each other for variety of patients, it is important for caregiver to pay attention not only to physical functions but also to psychological aspects of the patients. Rehabilitation should be based on a holistic perspective. However, functional training tends to focus too much on physical function recovery. Thus, rehabilitation has paid little consideration to the psychological aspect. To alleviate this problem and foster a sense of self-affirmation, we designed and implemented a rehabilitation system that addresses the psychological aspects of Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients by having them act autonomic in rehabilitation. Research scientists of nursing have found that the two factors of "self-initiated subject search" and "photography based on internal evaluation criteria" are important for the quality of life of patients as well as their rehabilitations. The two factors, "subject search" and "acting based on internal evaluation criteria" bring positive psychological effects to the patients through the autonomy of the photographing. In order to elucidate the neural basis of the positive psychological effects mediated by autonomy, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the effects of photography on the psychological mal-adjustment patients brought about by the autonomic actions. In other words, the neural basis behind the positive psychological effect of the act of photography was demonstrated. It is conceivable that the process of taking photographs, i.e., the actions of searching for a subject and pressing the shutter, can improve the psychological stability of patients with muscular dystrophy. The two actions have a combined psychological effect due to the autonomy of the action-takers. On the psychological side, patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy can expand their range of activities for photography and develop curiosity and ambition by taking photos by his own will and force, in contrast to doing monotonic functional training. Taking photos by their own muscle help their psychological well-being as well as rehabilitate their arm and hand muscles. In addition, our system provides semi-automatic management of photos to reduce the burden on caregivers. The system consists of a device that is attached on the user’s wheelchairs to assist taking photos and an application software to send the photos to caregivers. In order to adapt to the muscular dystrophy patients that have weak muscle, we employed a home video game console controller to manipulate the camera in order to press the shutter button. We designed this device easy to use for muscular dystrophy patients to change the directions and angles of the camera and to capture the subject with their weak muscle forces. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of our system, we have conduct experiences of the system and succeeded to obtain favorable outcome.

An experimental investigation was conducted to study the effects of increased ambient pressure (up to 6.89 MPa) and increased nozzle pressure drop (up to 2.8 MPa) on the cone angles for sprays produced by pressure-swirl atomizers having varying amounts of initial swirl. This study extends the classical results of DeCorso and Kemeny [1]. Shadow photography was used to measure cone angles at x/D0=10, 20, 40, and 60. Our lower pressure results for atomizer swirl numbers of 0.50 and 0.25 are consistent with those of DeCorso and Kemeny [1], who observed a decrease in cone angle with an increase in a pressure drop-ambient density product until a minimum cone angle was reached at ΔPρair1.6~200. Results for atomizers having higher swirl numbers do not match the DeCorso and Kemeny [1] results as well, suggesting that their correlation be used with caution. Another key finding is that an increase in ΔPρair1.6 to a value of 1000 leads to continued decreases in cone angle, but that a subsequent increase to 4000 has little effect on cone angle. Finally, there was little influence of atomizer pressure drop on cone angle, in contrast to findings of previous workers. These effects are hypothesized to be due to gas entrainment.

Evaluations of the SiC demonstration telescope mirror for the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) instrument for the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) mission have been carried out at the Diffraction Grating Evaluation Facility (DGEF)1 at Goddard Space Flight Center. These evaluations include: image quality at 124 nm; scatter into off-specular angles at 124 nm; visible image quality; figure assessment using a ZYGO Mark IV interferometer; microroughness evaluation of the surface using a WYKO optical interference heterodyne profilometer; and scatter photographs of the mirror surface illuminated with a collimated beam at off-specular angles. An analytical model of the vacuum ultraviolet experiments has been developed2 to predict the experimental outcomes. Experiments are described and results are compared to analytical predictions based on the surface metrologic data gathered.

Methods for retrieving leaf inclination angles in a forest canopy are considered. To acquire data on the orientation of Sorbus aucuparia leaves, a technique based on leveled camera digital photography well suited for conducting surveys in a boreal forest was used. In the course of field and office work, leaf angle distribution data for the specified species in the Priozersky district of the Leningrad region was obtained and analyzed. Values of the Ross-Nielson integral function were estimated.

Contact angle is a critical parameter needed in the mechanistic models for the prediction of flow boiling heat transfer. In this paper, variations of upstream and downstream contact angles for a single vapor bubble in flow boiling on horizontal and vertical surfaces were investigated experimentally. The nucleation site is a well-characterized cavity, which was etched on a highly polished silicon wafer surface using micro-fabrication techniques. Water at one atmosphere pressure was used as the working fluid. Photographic images of the bubble were recorded during its inception, growth and liftoff by using high-speed video system and analyzed by an image-processing program. The results provide clean data on the dependence of upstream and downstream contact angles on surface orientation and flow velocity.
