Résumé :
Rubber wood (Hevea brasiliensis) was esterfied with phenylisothiocya-nate, and dimensional stability, decay resistance, and photo stability of the modified wood was assessed. The chemically modified wood was characterized by FTIR and CP/MAS 13C NMR spectroscopy. Unmodified and modified samples were exposed to a brown rot (Polyporus meliae) and a white rot (Coriolus versicolor) fungus for 12 weeks. Modified wood samples exhibited good dimensional stability and were very resistant to decay. However, phenylisothiocyanate modification of wood was not effective in decreasing photo-yellowing.

Résumé :
Photo-degradation is an irreversible alteration in the chemical, mechanical and physical properties of polymers, these alterations are a result of photon absorption from sunlight. UV-light is considered to be the main factor for initiating photo-degradation process of polymers. To extend the lifetime of polymers, their durability, overall minimization of the rate of photo degradation and protection of polymers against environmental factors, stabilizers are introduced to polymers. In addition, since the interaction of the polymer with its environment occurs mainly at the surface of the polymer, therefore surface modification of polymers is used to enhance the UV photo-stabilization. This method can also provide a more durable, weather resistant and photo-stable polymers.

Résumé :
Oxidative stress, photo-oxidation, and photosensitizers are activated by UV irradiation and are affecting the photo-stability of proteins. Understanding the mechanisms that govern protein photo-stability is essential for its control enabling enhancement or reduction. Currently, two major mechanisms for protein denaturation induced by UV irradiation are available: one generated by the local heating of water molecules bound to the proteins and the other by the formation of reactive free radicals. To discriminate which is the likely or dominant mechanism we have studied the effects of thermal and UV denaturation of aqueous protein solutions with and without DHR-123 as fluorogenic probe using circular dichroism (CD), synchrotron radiation circular dichroism (SRCD), and fluorescence spectroscopies. The results indicated that the mechanism of protein denaturation induced by VUV and far-UV irradiation were mediated by the formation of reactive free radicals (FR) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). The development at Diamond B23 beamline for SRCD of a novel protein UV photo-stability assay based on consecutive repeated CD measurements in the far-UV (180–250 nm) region has been successfully used to assess and characterize the photo-stability of protein formulations and ligand binding interactions, in particular for ligand molecules devoid of significant UV absorption.

Résumé :
Antigene technology is the one strategy for the artificial regulation of gene expression by the formation of triple structure on triplex forming oligonucleotide (TFO) with dsDNA. For the enhancement of the thermal stability of triplex structure, photo-crosslinking reaction is attractive by the covalent bond formation between TFO and dsDNA. In this paper, we designed the novel TFOs containing benzophenone moiety as a photo-crosslinkable agent. Several types of glycol nucleoside analogs having glycol scaffold and benzophenone residues with different linker length were prepared, and the these were incorporated into TFOs. The thermal stability of triplex and the photo-crosslinking reaction efficiency of TFOs toward dsDNA was systematically evaluated.

Résumé :
As a kind of rig-rod-like polymer, poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) has received great interest because of its excellent mechanical properties and good thermal stability. The use of PBO materials, however, is limited due to its low sunlight stability. In this study, photolysis of PBO films was studied by infrared spectroscopy and molecular mass determination. It found that at the beginning of photolysis, the I.V. values of PBO almost did not changed. Then, it underwent fast decrease stage. Moreover, PBO degrade slowly in N2 atmosphere than in air atmosphere. The most likely photo-degradation mechanism was put forward. Attempts to stabilize PBO from photolysis were also investigated. It found that heat treatment could alleviate photo-degradation speed of PBO. Traditional light stabilizers showed a marginal effect on photolysis of PBO, whereas ferrocene dimethanol behaved better effect on the photo-stabilization of PBO.

Résumé :
A ultraviolet filter is defined as a substance, mixture, or material that blocks or absorbs radiation in the UV range, and its key purpose is protect the skin from the harmful effects of the radiation. Consumer concern is mainly regarding organic filters and the frequent problems with their low photo-stability, which is highly undesirable in terms of safety. The aim of this work was to discuss the term “photo-stability” and to assess the safety of the three most popular compounds classified as ultraviolet filters. Cited studies and issued opinions by Scientific Committees on Customer Safety confirm the safety for human health of Avobenzone, Oxybenzone and Octinoxate in strictly defined maximum concentrations. Side effects of these filters, like accumulation in the bloodstream, may occur after prolonged use. In order to improve the level of photo-stability of Avobenzone and Octinoxate the following methods are used: the use of photo-stabilizers and excited state quenchers, encapsulation of the molecule in micelles or the addition of antioxidants such as vitamin C. Although these compounds do not pose a serious threat to human health, two of them (Oxybenzone and Octinoxate) have a negative impact on aquatic ecosystems.

Résumé :
This work examines the mechanical performance of thin film coatings from Photosensitive-benzocyclobutene (Photo-BCB) formulations (Cyclotene2 4024, 4026 and 7200), on various substrate surfaces such as Al, Cu, Si, and SiN. The adhesion promoter used was designated AP-3000 and was based on vinyltriacetoxysilane (VTAS), which had been properly hydrolyzed and advanced. Measurement of the interfacial adhesion was performed primarily using the modified Edge Liftoff Test m-ELT. It was found that, by applying the newly developed adhesion promoter, AP-3000, the interfacial energy of Photo-BCB to Al, Cu, Si, and SiN was significantly improved, often approaching the toughness of Photo-BCB, ca. 45 J/m2. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses of the delaminated surfaces of the Photo-BCB/Al structure revealed distinct differences in surface roughness and the chemical composition depending on whether or not adhesion promoter was used. Other parameters important for long term stability (e.g., moisture uptake and thermal stability) of Photo-BCB were also measured. The equilibrium moisture content at 84 percent RH in ambient temperature was low, 0.14 wt percent and the thermally induced weight loss at 330°C in helium atmosphere was less than 1 percent/h. The low moisture absorption and good thermal stability, together with the given mechanical toughness and adhesion, allow the Photo-BCB to be widely usable for various microelectronic packaging applications, for up to 40 μm thick build in the case of silicon substrate. Résumé :
Aim: To compare the color stability and degree of conversion (DC) of a resin cement containing a dibenzoyl germanium derivative photo-initiator (Variolink Esthetic) to resin cements containing conventional luting agents. Materials and Method: Spectrophotometry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to compare the color stability and DC, respectively, of Variolink Esthetic compared to Calibra, Variolink-N, and NX3 resin cements. Ten specimens (1 × 2 mm2) of each resin cement were photo-polymerized and then subjected to color stability assessments. In addition, 30 samples of each of the four resin cements were prepared and then immersed in three staining solutions (tea, coffee, and distilled water) for two weeks. Changes in color for the immersed versus non-immersed specimens (control specimens) were determined by comparing ΔL (lightness), Δa, and Δb (color components), and an overall ΔE (color difference) obtained from spectrophotometry assays. One-way analysis of variance and a multiple comparison test (Tukey’s test) were used to analyze color stability and DC data. NX3 and Variolink Esthetic resin cements exhibited significantly lower values compared to the dual cured resin cements (Variolink-N and Calibra). Results: The highest DC values were observed among the photo-polymerized samples of Variolink Esthetic (87.18 ± 2.90%), while the lowest DC values were observed among the Variolink-N samples (44.55 ± 4.33%). Conclusion: The resin cement, Variolink Esthetic, containing a novel dibenzoyl germanium derivative photo-initiator exhibited superior color stability ( p < 0.05) and a higher DC than other resin cements containing conventional luting agents in an in vitro setting.

Résumé :
In this study, zinc vanadate/reduced graphene oxide (Zn3V2O8/rGO) composite has been synthesized via a simple approach. Advanced characterization techniques (powder X-ray, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy) have been used to authenticate the formation of Zn3V2O8/rGO composite. Subsequently, Zn3V2O8/rGO was applied as photo-catalyst for hydrogen generation using photo-catalysis. The Zn3V2O8/rGO photo-catalyst exhibited a good hydrogen generation amount of 104.6 µmolg−1. The Zn3V2O8/rGO composite also demonstrates excellent cyclic stability which indicated better reusability of the photo-catalyst (Zn3V2O8/rGO). This work proposes a new photo-catalyst for H2 production application. We believe that the presence of synergistic interactions was responsible for the improved photo-catalytic properties of Zn3V2O8/rGO composite. The Zn3V2O8/rGO composite is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective photo-catalyst and can be used for photo-catalytic applications.

Résumé :
In this paper, we investigate the origin of photo-induced instability in amorphous metal-oxide based thin-film transistors (oxide-TFTs) by exploring threshold voltage (Vth) shift in transfer characteristics. The combination of photo irradiation and prolonged gate bias stress enhanced the shift in Vth in amorphous hafnium-indium-zinc-oxide (a-HfIZO) TFTs. Such results stem from the extended trapped charges at the localized defect states related to oxygen vacancy which play a role in a screening effect on the electric field induced by gate voltage. We also demonstrate the chemically clean interface in oxide-TFTs by employing oxygen annealing which reduces the density of trap states, thereby resulting in improved photo-induced stability. We believe that this work stimulates the research society of transparent electronics by providing a promising approach to suppress photo-induced instability in metal-oxide TFTs.

Résumé :
Gold and silver nanostructures (such as Au nanorods and Ag nanoplates) exhibit strong and tunable surface plasmon resonance in the near-infrared region (NIR). Under a certain NIR laser irradiation, noble metal nanostructrues achieve a high photo-thermal effect, which would be useful in the therapy. In this work, Au nanorods with longitude surface plasmon resonance (SPRL) shifting in the region of 650 ~1100 nm were synthesized by a seed method. Ag nanoplates and nanocubes with SPR located in the region of 650~850 nm were produced by a hydrothermal method. Through adjusting laser power and irradiating time, the photo-thermal conversions of these nanostructures were studied under NIR laser irradiation. Under low power laser (808 nm, <1W) irradiation, the shape of the Au nanorods are stable and the temperature of colloid increase from room temperature to ~57°C. However, Au nanorods undergo deformation from rod to spherical particle under irradiation of high power (808 nm laser; 6W; 1064nm laser, 7W), resulting in the disappearance of SPRL. Morphology evolutions and photo-thermal conversion of Ag nanostructures were also studied. Ag nanostructures have a lower photo-thermal conversion compared with that of Au nanorods colloid. Snipping and dendrite can be observed for Ag nanoplates after irradiating, while Ag nanocubes have no obvious shape change.

Résumé :
Abstract This work aimed to evaluate the thermal and photo stability of the antioxidant potential (AP) of the Spirulina platensis biomass. Thermal stability was established at 25ºC, 40ºC and 50ºC for 60 days, in the dark, protected from light. Photo stability was evaluated using UV (15 W, λ = 265 nm) and fluorescent (20 W, 0.16 A, power factor FP > 0.5, 50/60 Hz, 60 lm/w, 1200 lm) light for 90 days in capsules, glass and Petri dishes, at room temperature. The AP of the biomass in these conditions was determined at intervals (every 7 and 30 days in the studies of thermal and photo stability, respectively) using the induction of the oxidation of a lipid system by heat and aeration. In this lipid system, the biomass submitted to degradation was used as an antioxidant. The kinetics of the reaction was determined by the Arrhenius method. Thermal degradation was found to follow zero order kinetics, whereas photo degradation followed first order kinetics. The AP decreased 50% after 50 days at 25°C. At 40°C and 50°C, the AP decreased more than 50% after 35 and 21 days of exposition, respectively. The decrease of the AP of Spirulina was more sensible to UV and fluorescence light. After 30 days of exposition, the AP decreased more than 50% in all storage conditions tested. The antioxidant potential of Spirulina platensis is easily degraded when the biomass is exposed to heat and light, indicating the need for care to be taken in its storage.

Résumé :
MoS2 has garnered considerable attention as an exceptional co-catalyst that is capable of significantly enhancing the efficiency of H2O2 decomposition in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This improvement allows for a reduction in the required amounts of H2O2 and Fe2+. In this study, we investigated the cyclic durability of photo-Fenton catalysts, focusing on the degradation of pollutants through the introduction of PPy into heterogeneous 1T-2H MoS2 units. The resulting photothermal-Fenton catalysts, comprising non-ferrous Fenton catalysts, demonstrated excellent degradation performance for simulated pollutants. In comparison with 1T-2H MoS2, the PPy@1T-2H MoS2 composite exhibited remarkable stability and photothermal enhancement in the photo-Fenton degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. The photo-Fenton reaction efficiently degraded contaminants, achieving 99% removal within 5 min and 99.8% removal within 30 min. Moreover, the co-catalyst complex displayed enhanced cyclic stability during the photo-Fenton reaction, with a contaminant removal efficiency of 92%, even after the 13th cyclic test. The combined effects of PPy and 1T-2H MoS2 demonstrated improved efficiency in both photocatalytic and photo-Fenton catalytic reactions. Furthermore, PPy@1T-2H MoS2 exhibited outstanding performance in the photothermal evaporation of water, achieving an efficiency of 86.3% under one solar irradiation.
