Résumé :

Philippe Noble est traducteur littéraire. On lui doit notamment la traduction d’œuvres d’Etty Hillesum, Harry Mulisch et Cees Nooteboom. Après avoir mené une carrière à l’Université, Philippe Noble s’est engagé au service des Affaires étrangères et de la diplomatie culturelle – il a été conseiller culturel à La Haye (2000-2004) et à Vienne (2008-2011), directeur de la Maison Descartes et du Réseau franco-néerlandais. Il est aussi directeur de la collection « lettres néerlandaises » chez Actes Sud. Nous nous sommes entretenus avec lui à propos de son travail de « médiateur culturel » entre la France et les Pays-Bas. L’entretien est suivi d’une bibliographie complète des traductions réalisées par Philippe Noble.

Résumé :

Dans cet article il est question du premier Conseil Suprême des Pays-Bas et de Bourgogne à Madrid. Il fut érigé par Philippe II en 1588 et il exista jusqu’au moment où, en 1598, les Pays-Bas passèrent aux archiducs. On étudiera les facteurs qui ont mené à sa création – tardive en comparaison avec des institutions similaires au sommet de l’Empire espagnol – ainsi que la composition, les compétences et le fonctionnement effectif du Conseil. Ces analyses montrent que l’importance réelle de l’institution était très réduite mais que néanmoins tant le gouverneur général que le roi essayèrent de s’en servir pour leurs propres buts politiques.

L’administration impériale espagnole attira un grand nombre d’exilés vers les Pays-Bas. Les ressources accumulées par le roi d’Espagne permettaient de récompenser les réfugiés employés dans l’armée ou dans la restauration spirituelle. Tel fut le destin de certains nobles musulmans nord-africains qui, après s’être réfugiés dans les domaines des Habsbourg et avoir été baptisés, cherchaient à servir pleinement Philippe II en profitant de ses gratifications. En rejoignant les forces armées, ces nobles, récompensés par des pensions, virent leur engagement renforcé. Les Pays-Bas, expérience nécessaire au cœur d’un véritable cursus honorum , faisaient partie d’un vaste réseau de circulation dont l’étape ultime était souvent située dans l’espace méditerranéen. Les trajectoires de ces réfugiés révèlent la complexité des mécanismes d’action d’une monarchie hispanique capable d’intégrer des populations d’origines diverses.

La familia francesa de Philippe V d’Espagne. Essai de biographie collective — La familia francesa de Philippe V, premier Bourbon d’Espagne (1701-1746), est rarement mentionnée dans les ouvrages consacrés au règne de ce roi. Constituée de bas-officiers français dispersés dans les différents services de la maison du roi, elle s’installa dès 1701, avant d’être peu à peu renforcée par de nouvelles arrivées. Son étude permet de suivre les stratégies d’implantation d’une société française au sein d’une cour étrangère. Durant les premières années, on constate une progressive intégration dans un esprit de conciliation entre les différentes nationalités, tandis que, parallèlement, se développent de multiples réseaux de solidarités, par mariages et par cooptations professionnelles, qui ont pour effet de consolider la possession des charges et de créer des moyens d’entraide en cas de besoin. Mais, c’est bien l’affection portée par le roi à cette familia francesa qui explique sa pérennité : se pose alors la question de son devenir dans la seconde moitié du siècle.

Dans son célèbre roman Les Anciens Canadiens, Philippe Aubert de Gaspé (1786-1871) par le truchement de Monsieur d'Egmont en qui on a reconnu l'auteur, veut laisser croire qu'il a été victime de « faux amis » alors qu'il a été l'artisan de son propre malheur. Dès les débuts de sa carrière d'avocat, il multiplie les dettes et vit au-dessus de ses moyens. Les expédients financiers l'amènent à des actions douteuses, puis franchement illégales envers les membres de sa famille, les clients et, dans le cadre de sa pratique professionnelle à titre de shérif, envers le gouvernement. Ses défalcations malhonnêtes contribuent notamment à la ruine de Joseph-François Perrault qui avait entrepris la mise sur pied d'écoles au bénéfice de la jeunesse du Bas-Canada. Destitué et accusé de malversation, Aubert de Gaspé se réfugie à Saint-Jean-Port-Joli. La justice met plusieurs années à l'atteindre, mais des actions sont prises contre lui. Il doit faire face à la justice et purger une peine d'emprisonnement à Québec entre 1838 et 1841.

Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle (1517-1586) fut l’une des figures diplomatiques les plus puissantes de son époque, ainsi que l’un des plus grands collectionneurs de livres et d’œuvres d’art. Fils de Nicolas Perrenot de Granvelle, un des deux principaux ministres des Affaires étrangères de Charles Quint, Antoine Perrenot fut destiné dès son jeune âge à une carrière diplomatique tout en occupant une position ecclésiastique très lucrative. En 1540, âgé de vingt-trois ans, il fut admis à la prêtrise et fait évêque d’Arras par le pape Paul III sur recommandation de l’empereur. Il s’agissait de l’un des postes ecclésiastiques les plus rémunérateurs des Pays-Bas espagnols. À la même date, il avait accumulé de nombreuses prébendes aux Pays-Bas et en Franche-Comté, et il continua ensuite de cumuler de nombreux bénéfices ecclésiastiques. Granvelle utilisa ses revenus très confortables pour satisfaire son goût du luxe, dont la création de l’une des plus grandes bibliothèques privées de son temps. En tant qu’évêque d’Arras, Granvelle consacra moins de temps à ses activités religieuses qu’à ses activités politiques, partageant avec son père des responsabilités gouvernementales. Charles Quint le tenait en haute estime, et Granvelle occupa beaucoup des charges de son père à la mort de ce dernier. En 1559, Philippe II nomma Granvelle conseiller et premier ministre de sa sœur Marguerite de Parme, régente des Pays-Bas, et il devint de fait le véritable chef du gouvernement de cette région. En 1559 toujours, il fut élu archevêque de Malines, puis cardinal en 1561. Après avoir été rappelé des Pays-Bas par Philippe II en 1564, et avoir passé un peu plus d’un an à Besançon, sa ville natale, Granvelle fut envoyé à Rome par le roi qui le nomma vice-roi de Naples de 1571 à 1575, où il joua un grand rôle dans les négociations qui débouchèrent sur la formation de la Sainte Ligue, qui remporta une victoire remarquable sur la flotte turque à Lépante en 1571. Rappelé en Espagne en 1575, Granvelle fut ministre de Philippe II en charge de la politique extérieure jusqu’à sa mort en 1586. Il semble bien que Granvelle ait projeté vers 1545 ou 1546 la création d’une grande bibliothèque complète digne d’un humaniste. Durant ces années trois faits déterminèrent l’étendue, la constitution et l’esthétique de la bibliothèque de Granvelle. D’abord, son bibliothécaire Antoine Morillon prépara en 1547 une liste de 1 200 éditions imprimées de textes grecs et latins, exposant ce qui devait, selon lui, constituer la bibliothèque d’un humaniste. Cette liste, l’ Index meliorum auctorum secundum artem , donnait des détails sur ce qu’une telle librairie devait contenir et pouvait servir de liste d’acquisitions. Ensuite, toujours en 1547, de nombreuses éditions imprimées de textes grecs, latins et italiens et de nombreux manuscrits grecs furent acquis et magnifiquement reliés dans plusieurs styles de reliure distinctifs à Venise, puis envoyés à Granvelle au nord des Alpes. Enfin, des principes d’ornementation des reliures furent élaborés et appliqués à la plupart des livres commandés à Venise. Ils déterminaient comment les livres seraient disposés sur les étagères : placés debout, côte à côte, la tranche visible, avec un titre en lettres d’or sur une étiquette de couleur peinte horizontalement sur la tranche. Morillon non seulement prépara l’ Index meliorum auctorum secundum artem mais il joua probablement aussi un rôle dans les deux autres étapes. Granvelle continua d’enrichir sa bibliothèque et joua un rôle de mécène auprès d’un grand nombre d’écrivains, d’imprimeurs et d’artistes durant sa carrière diplomatique. Bien que sa bibliothèque ait été largement dispersée durant les troubles aux Pays-Bas et après sa mort, la bibliothèque municipale de Besançon en conserve une partie représentative de ses livres et de sa correspondance.

Cette thèse présente la vie de Philippe Le Bas (1794-1860), le fils du Conventionnel de mêmes nom et prénom, qui choisit le 9 thermidor de rester fidèle à son ami Maximilien Robespierre, par amitié et convictions et qui se suicide dans la nuit du 9 au 10 thermidor. Il sera un grand érudit, un helléniste renommé, mais restera sa vie durant le défenseur de la mémoire de son père, de Robespierre, et de la République la plus pure. Toutefois en début de carrière, il sera pendant sept années le précepteur d’un jeune prince, Louis Napoléon Bonaparte. Deux décennies plus tard, souhaitant suivre les traces de son père, il se présente aux élections de la constituante de 1848, mais il n’est pas élu, contrairement à son élève qui non seulement devient député mais aussi président de la République. Quelques années plus tard, par un coup d’Etat il devient l’empereur Napoléon III, au grand dam de son précepteur qui voit alors brisés ses rêves de République par son propre élève
This thesis presents the life of Philippe Le Bas (1794-1860), the son of the Conventionnel of the same name and first name, who chose on 9 Thermidor to remain faithful to his friend Maximilien Robespierre, out of friendship and convictions and who committed suicide in the night from 9 to 10 Thermidor. He will be a great scholar, a renowned Hellenist, but will remain throughout his life the defender of the memory of his father, of Robespierre, and of the purest Republic. However, at the start of his career, he was for seven years the tutor of a young prince, Louis Napoléon Bonaparte. Two decades later, wishing to follow in his father's footsteps, he ran for the constituent elections of 1848, but he was not elected, unlike his student who not only became a deputy but also President of the Republic. A few years later, through a coup d’Etat, he became Emperor Napoleon III, to the great dismay of his tutor who then saw his dreams of a Republic shattered by his own student

Entre 1477 et 1493, l’État bourguignon traversa la plus grave crise de son existence. Face à Louis XI, les successeurs de Charles le Téméraire durent d’abord défendre l’intégrité territoriale de leurs possessions. À l’intérieur de celles-ci, ils furent confrontés aux revendications des villes de Flandre et de Brabant, porteuses d’un projet politique fondé sur l’autonomie urbaine. Au contexte politique très difficile, s’ajoute une conjoncture défavorable, en raison du très haut niveau des salaires, et donc du coût de la guerre, à la fin du XVe siècle. Les structures financières et militaires de l’État bourguignon montrèrent très vite leurs limites, obligeant les capitaines de Maximilien de Habsbourg à vivre d’expédients, de réquisitions et de pillages. Après la défaite des rebelles de Flandre, de Hollande et de Brabant, l’État bourguignon, désormais recentré sur les Pays-Bas, poursuivit son intégration sous le règne de Philippe le Beau. L’acceptation d’une fiscalité commune, débattue dans les assemblées représentatives des principautés et aux États généraux, est au cœur de ce processus
Between 1477 and 1493, the Burgundian state was confronted with the most serious crisis of its history. Against Louis XI, the successors of Charles the Bold had to defend the territorial integrity of his heritage. Within the Burgundian Netherlands, they were challenged by the claims of the largest Flemish and Brabantine cities, who promoted a political agenda based on urban autonomy. Besides the political background, the economic environment raised other difficulties, owing to the general high level of wages, which dramatically increased the cost of war at the end of the XVth century. The fiscal and military structures of the Burgundian state quickly found their limits and collapsed several times, forcing Maximilian’s captains to live by one’s wits, requisitioning supplies, extorting money or plundering the countryside, so that the inability of the medieval state to lastingly finance war invariably led to outbursts of violence. After the defeat of the Flemish-Brabantine revolt, the political integration of the Habsburg-Burgundian Netherlands made continuous progress. The rise of a common tax system, discussed at the States-General, without offending the strong particularism of the Netherlands principalities, played a crucial role in this process

Isabelle de Portugal (1397-1471), épouse en 1430 de Philippe le Bon, duc de Bourgogne, a exercé son autorité et sa protection sur une sphère familiale large composée de son fils Charles, de batards du duc, de cousins, de neveux et nièces, dont plusieurs furent des portugais. Elle disposait de ressources abondantes, certaines attribuées au maître de la chambre aux deniers pour le fonctionnement de son hôtel, d'autres étant des fonds propres provenant de ses domaines en Flandre, Artois et Bourgogne, de dons et d'aides votées par les états. Son hôtel, dont plus de quatre cents personnes ont été identifiées, formait un milieu protégé d'hommes et de femmes, de nobles et de roturiers, qui partageaient sa vie itinérante, essentiellement aux Pays-Bas. La stabilité de l'emploi y était remarquable. La duchesse a été associée par le duc au gouvernement de l'état et, en son absence, disposait de complètes délégations de pouvoir. Elle a montré une grande compétence dans la gestion des finances et a joué un role diplomatique important dans les relations de la Bourgogne avec l'Angleterre et la France. Son hôtel a été dissous à sa demande en 1455 et, en 1457, elle s'est retirée de la cour pour vivre dans la charité et encourager les formes nouvelles de vie religieuse, mais elle revint à la vie publique pendant les premières années (1467-1471) du règne de Charles le Téméraire
Isabel of Portugal, became in 1430 wife of Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy, has exercised her authority and her protection on a large family compound of her son Charles, bastards of the duke, cousins, nepews and nieces, some of whom were portuguese. She had at one's disposal abundant resources, some attributed to the maitre de la chambre aux deniers for the functioning of her household, others own stocks coming from her domains in Flanders, Artois and Burgundy, gifts or taxes. Her household more four hundred persons of whom were identified constituted a protected environment of men and women, nobles and commoners, who shared her itinerant life, mainly in low countries. The stability of the employment was remarkable. The duchess was associated to the state government by the duke and, in his absence, was appointed to govern. She has showed a great competence in the financial administration and acted efficiently in the diplomatic relations of burgundy with england and France. According to her request her househould was broken-up in 1455 and in 1457 she retired out of the court to life in charity and to encourage the new forms of religious life, but she came back to the public life during the first years (1467-1471) of the reign of Charles the Bold

Notre mémoire s’intéresse au fonds de tableaux Desjardins, plus spécifiquement aux œuvres acquises par les paroisses rurales du Bas-Canada entre 1817 et 1833, dans l’optique d’une utilisation à des fins surpassant la seule ornementation. D’abord, il s’attarde à la situation de l’Église catholique au sein de la colonie au tournant du XIXe siècle, moment de l’arrivée des tableaux. Ensuite, il démontre l’intérêt des ecclésiastiques du Bas-Canada à l’égard des images et leur conscience des services qu’elles peuvent rendre à la religion. Ultimement, par le biais des ensembles constitués par les paroisses de Saint-Henri de Lévis et Saint-Antoine de la Baie-du-Febvre, notre étude définit les moyens habilitant les toiles du fonds de tableaux Desjardins à supporter les pratiques dévotionnelles et à participer à l’instruction catéchistique des fidèles de la colonie.

Cette thèse de doctorat tente de répondre à la question de recherche suivante : comment se construit en France la discipline de l’enseignement de l’histoire en ce qui concerne l’enseignement de l’histoire de la Grèce ancienne. Au XIXe siècle, l’histoire ancienne s’impose le plus souvent en sixième ou cinquième, parfois en troisième dans l’enseignement secondaire comme discipline à part entière. Dans une première partie, à travers les changements socio-politiques enregistrés entre 1814 et 1914, nous étudions les développements législatifs placés sous la responsabilité du ministère de l’Instruction publique qui fondent les nouveaux programmes d’histoire ancienne. La liaison étroite entre les humanités classiques et l'histoire montre que l'histoire ancienne suit un chemin sans relation à celui de l'histoire de France, car, à cette même période, si le modèle de l’histoire de France prend de l’ampleur dans l’enseignement secondaire, celui de l’histoire ancienne s’affirme et se structure sous l’influence notamment de l’archéologie. Dans une seconde partie, l’étude des livres scolaires d’histoire ancienne réunis dans un corpus inédit d’ouvrages publiés entre 1814 et 1914, permet d’observer comment la présentation de la Grèce ancienne s’éloigne progressivement de l’ancien modèle contenu dans l'histoire ancienne de Charles Rollin (1661-1741) pour se laisser influencer par l'histoire scientifique à la fin du siècle. Les principaux protagonistes de ce sujet sont les auteurs des livres scolaires ainsi que les ministres de l'Instruction publique. A travers leurs discours et leurs récits, nous essayons de montrer comment l'histoire enseignée de la Grèce ancienne participe de concert avec les autres travaux historiographiques de l’époque, aux principaux bouleversements politiques qui jalonnent cette période
The present work attempts to answer the following question : how the discipline of history teaching was built in France in the context of the teaching of history of the ancient Greece. In the nineteenth century, ancient history was most of the time imposed in the sixth or fifth grade in secondary school. In the first part of our thesis, we study the legislative developments through the socio-political changes recorded between 1814 and 1914, under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education, which provides for the first time the curriculum of ancient history. The close connection between classical humanities and history shows that ancient history follows a different path of that of French history which at the same time starts to dominate in secondary schools. AbstractThis chapter analyzes the discrimination that foreign student-athletes (FSAs) face through policies instituted by the Philippines’ top collegiate amateur sports organizations, which restrict participation in competitions. These policies ostensibly uphold amateurism and develop local talent, but negatively impact student-athletes from Nigeria, Cameroon, and other African countries who tend to excel compared to local student-athletes. While these restrictions have been widely criticized as racist, and detrimental to basketball as a sport, it appears likely that they will remain in place. The ban on FSAs is reinforced explicitly and/or implicitly in law and league regulations, confirming a recurring nationalist theme within Philippine sports. To the extent that law and jurisprudence can have a positive normative effect on society, it is important to find legal avenues to resist these measures. This chapter argues that there is the possibility under Philippine law for affected FSAs to protect their freedom through litigation based on equal protection and non-discrimination, and discusses potential modes of action and evaluates elements that may affect their success.

Abstract To reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and develop indigenous biofuels, the Philippines enacted the Biofuels Act of 2006 which currently mandates a 10% by volume blend of 99.6% anhydrous bio-ethanol for commercially sold Unleaded and Premium gasolines. To urge a regulation review of the anhydrous requirement and examine the suitability for automotive use of hydrous bioethanol (HBE) blends, preliminary engine dynamometer tests at 1400–4400 rpm were conducted to measure specific fuel consumption (SFC) and power. In this study, HBE (95 % ethanol and 5% water by volume) produced from sweet sorghum using a locally-developed process, was blended volumetrically with three base gasoline fuels — Neat, Unleaded, and Premium. The four HBE blends tested were 10% and 20% with Neat gasoline, 20% with Unleaded gasoline, and 20% with Premium gasoline. For blends with Neat gasoline, the SFC of the 10%HBE blend was comparable with to slightly higher than Neat gasoline. The SFC of the 20%HBE blend was comparable with Neat gasoline up to 2800 rpm and lower beyond this speed thus being better overall than the 10%HBE blend. Compared to their respective commercial base fuels, the HBE-Unleaded blend showed lower SFC while the HBE-Premium blend yielded slightly higher SFC over most of the engine speed range. Between commercial fuel blends, the HBE-Unleaded blend gave better SFC than the HBE-Premium blend. Power was practically similar for the fuels tested. No engine operational problems and fuel blend phase separation were encountered during the tests. This preliminary study indicated the suitability of and possible optimum hydrous bio-ethanol blends for automotive use under Philippine conditions.

The Presidios of Tuscany have received less historiographical attention than other fortified sites on the Mediterranean coast. In this context, it is worth mentioning a place unjustly forgotten: Porto Longone (Porto o Puerto Longón in Spanish), today’s Porto Azzurro, on the island of Elba. During the twenty years following the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, Longone was an isolated enclave, Philip V of Spain’s last stronghold in Italy, whose preservation depended on a frail diplomatic and military balance. Despite its fragile situation, the fortress would be of key importance in maintaining the network of contacts with Italy within the revanchist strategy of the Spanish Bourbon and obtaining intelligence from the territories controlled by the imperial forces of Charles VI. The king’s will to turn Longone into a powerful forward base meant that some of the most experienced military engineers of the newly created Spanish Royal Corps of Engineers were stationed there, such as Antonio Montaigut de la Perille, Pedro Coysevaux or Simón Poulet. The project for Longone detailed in the plans of 1722 and 1727 written by Coysevaux was comprehensive and addressed both fortifications like the bastions of Castellón, Toledo or Zúñiga and their advanced works as well as other constructions necessary to ensure the defence of the fortress and decent service conditions for its garrison: barracks, warehouses, powder magazines and water cisterns. The War of the Polish Succession would increase the weight of the stronghold as a base for operations in Italy. From 1735 onwards, Porto Longone would be cut off from the dominions of the kings of Spain, but the previous two decades attest to the effort put into its fortification and improvement, without which its conservation would probably have been more seriously challenged by the rivals of Philip V.

O presente artigo investiga duas questões: os afetos presentes nas interações homens e objetos técnicos no âmbito das tecnologias atuais, e o tratamento dado por autores de ficção científica para composições homens máquinas. O primeiro eixo vale-se da obra de Gilbert Simondon e de seu trabalho sobre a evolução dos objetos técnicos, da cultura técnica e da psicossociologia da tecnicidade. O afeto faz uma espécie de mediação entre homem e objeto, bem como constitui o elo de agenciamento entre individuação, técnica e desejo. O segundo eixo trabalha com diferentes possibilidades para relações entre homens e máquinas na literatura de Philip Dick, James Ballard, Bruce Sterling, William Hodgson e Max Barry. Os afetos, nesse caso, indicam diferentes possibilidades para relações entre homens e máquinas e para os hibridismos aí implicados: robôs, cyborgs, andróides e monstros. Os universos maquínicos das tecnociências contemporâneas produzem novas subjetivações, recriando cibertemporalidades e ciberespacialidades. Os afetos mobilizam a imaginação e, portanto, estão na base do ato criativo e da vida psíquica. A autonomia dos afetos, expressão de Brian Massumi, desdobra-se na autonomia das máquinas, na redução das margens da intersubjetividade e no fim do eu. Políticas da imaginação e recriação poética da vida psíquica sinalizam a importância dos afetos na construção de novas possibilidades subjetivas.

The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) in collaboration with the interagency technical committee on radioactive waste has been undertaking a national project to find a final solution to the country’s low to intermediate level radioactive waste. The strategy adopted was to co-locate 2 disposal concepts that will address the types of radioactive waste generated from the use of radioactive materials. This strategy is expected to compensate for the small volumes of waste generated in the Philippines as compared to countries with big nuclear energy programs. It will also take advantage of the benefits of a shared infrastructure and R&D work that accompany such project. The preferred site selected from previous site selection and investigations is underlain by highly fractured “andesitic volcaniclastics” mantled by residual clayey soil which act as the aquifer or water bearing layer. Results of investigation show that the groundwater in the area is relatively dilute and acidic. Springs at the lower elevations of the footprint also indicate acidic waters. The relatively acidic water is attributed to the formation of sulfuric acid by the oxidation of the pyrite in the andesite. A preliminary post closure safety assessment was carried out using the GMS MODFLOW and HYDRUS softwares purchased through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) technical assistance. Results from MODFLOW modeling show that the radionuclide transport follows the natural gradient from the top of the hill down to the natural discharge zones. The vault dispersion model shows a circular direction from the vaults towards the faults and eventually to the creeks. The contaminant transport from borehole shows at least one confined plume from the borehole towards the creek designated as Repo1 and eventually follows downstream. The influx of surface water and rainfall to the disposal vault was modeled using the HYDRUS software. The pressure head and water content at the base of the foundation layer and the bottom of the concrete is where a significant reduction in water content can be observed. It is also noted that water content and pressure remain constant after one year.

The fortress and its garden: a view from the seaThe Fortress was built from 1554, on the ruins of an ancient convent, at the behest of Philip of Austria, and it was completed in about 55 years under the direction of Giulio Cesare Falco, knight of the Order of Malta and Captain General against the Turks. The maine structure, called Forte a Mare, was joined with the Opera a Corno, a mighty rampart with the function of enclosure of the intermediate island, separated from the other island in 1598 by the construction of the Angevin canal: here were arranged the lodgings of the troops and garrisons. Castello and Forte, were named by the Spaniards Isla Fortalera que abre el Puerto Grande, because of its particular position to protect the port. The complex was entrusted to the Germans in 1715, then conquered by the French Revolutionaries and, in 1815, re-annexed to the Kingdom of Naples and destined to lazaretto. A period of decline follows until the end of the 19th century when Brindisi became a first class naval base and the fort became a garrison of the Royal Navy, destined, during the Great War, to recover torpedoes and detonators The recovery of the complex, starting in the 1980s, allowed the conservation of the structures but was never included in a real valorisation program. With this intervention in progress, a first visit is expected through the visit from the walkways through a circular route from the Castle to the whole Opera in Corno: the itinerary will allow you to retrace the history of the Fortress and enjoy a unique view from the high towards the sea, also through the passage in a curtain of Mediterranean scrub that has colonized the walls over the centuries, creating a veritable hanging garden on the sea. The aim is to lead the visitor to the rediscovery a forgotten place that is closely connected to the coastal landscape, for which it is a privileged point of view also in relation to the city and the port.

Having an overall view of the spatial patterns of urban fabrics in a vast metropolitan area is paramount for understanding the emerging spatial organization of the contemporary metropolis. The French Riviera is a polycentric metropolitan area of more than 1200 km2 structured around the old coastal cities of Nice, Cannes, Antibes and Monaco. XIX century and early XX century urban growth is now complemented by modern developments and more recent suburban areas. A large-scale analysis of urban fabrics can only be carried out through a new geoprocessing protocol, combining indicators of spatial relations within urban fabrics, geo-statistical analysis and Bayesian data-mining. Applied to the French Riviera, nine families of urban fabrics are identified and correlated to the historical periods of their production. Central cities are thus characterized by the combination of different families of pre-modern, dense, continuous built-up fabrics, as well as by modern discontinuous forms. More interestingly, fringe-belts in Nice and Cannes, as well as the techno-park of Sophia-Antipolis, combine a spinal cord of connective artificial fabrics having sparse specialized buildings, with the already mentioned discontinuous fabrics of modern urbanism. Further forms are identified in the suburban and “rurban” spaces around central cities. The proposed geoprocessing procedure is not intended to supersede traditional expert-base analysis of urban fabric.
