Résumé :
The community of inmates children as a unique and unique social system is difficult to understand when viewed only from the outside, so it is necessary to systematically attempt to know the values, norms, relationships, and objectives-through where and with what they are living, and understand both their own experiences and the world in which they liveThe situational system of the inmates children as human beings (although in this case is the child) to be fostered, is one of the important elements in the whole process of assistance in the Penitentiary is no exception to the Children Penitentiary in Kutoarjo. The entire penitentiary system design, from the assistance program, the assistance mechanism, and the assistance implementation, is actually determined by the circumstances and the reality of the people who are to be fostered, the inmates. The reality of the children inmates who are always on the "social order" in their various communities is essentially constantly changing. Specifically, this study finds links between: the institutional reality of a children penitentiary, which includes the factual circumstances concerning facilities and infrastructure, and the administrative aspects of KutoarjoChildren Penitentiary. The reality of the member of KutoarjoChildren Penitentiaryin the form of identified number of occupants, placement systems, and formal and informal groupings of the targeted children in addition to the build and formed a community of the assisted children in KutoarjoChildren Penitentiary and the basic elements of the Social System of the Auxiliaries in all the community of assisted children and etc.As Soerjono Sukanto said that even though human "convicts" live in a confined state, they instinctively want to interact with fellow inmates. This instinct is referred to as "gregariousness" (Soekanto: 1998: 73), which in the last instance will give birth to so-called "social groups". In this context created social structure, social system, norms and so on.

Résumé :
The article examines the process of reforming the Ukrainian penitentiary system from independence to the present. It is stressed that with the advent of independence in Ukraine, there was a departure from the Soviet past and a wish to join Western European values and institutions. The European course and intention to be integrated into the European community have become the primary priorities of Ukraine’s foreign policy. The attention is focused on the fact that the political course taken by our country for integration into the European community requires transformations in various spheres of social relations. In this context, an important place is occupied by reforming the Ukrainian penitentiary system, taking into account the experience of positive functioning of the penitentiary systems in the European Union member states. Accession of Ukraine to the Council of Europe demonstrated the readiness of our country to make global reforms aimed at protecting human rights and strengthening democratic institutions. The historical analysis proved that the present Ukrainian penitentiary system follows the Soviet model for the treatment of prisoners, which is based on authoritarianism and totalitarianism. In light of European integration processes, the Ukrainian penitentiary system must be overviewed, and new ways must be sought for its development. Respect for the dignity of the human person is one of the most European Union values. Ukraine’s orientation to the system of European values shall contribute to rethinking and seeking new ways to build a civilised European-style penitentiary system in our country. In modern circumstances, the Ukrainian penitentiary system is still in crisis. It has many issues, which are primarily related to its underfunding, outdated prison infrastructure, inadequate level of medical care, numerous cases of prisoners’ ill-treatment, lack of a sufficient number of rehabilitation programs, etc. Comparative legal research on the functioning of the penitentiary systems in the European Union and Ukraine is needed to build a civilised European-style penitentiary system in our country. Analysing and studying the theoretical development of this subject will help formulating specific proposals for improving the Ukrainian criminal-executive system.

Résumé :
The problem examined is community solidarity in a well-established prison town. The primary question addressed in this study is "what is the reported impact of a correctional facility's presence on community solidarity?" This study is concerned with the community's perception about the problems, as well as the benefits involved in the housing of a prison and in particular the solidarity of the community. The relevant literature dates from 1929 to 2004 and examines a wide range of concepts associated with community studies and prison studies. Based on themes found in the review of prison literature; work issues, safety, concern about children, stress, community image, benefits, community identity, and community cohesion, seven research questions were constructed. A semi-structured interview was conducted of 81 residents of Walker County in Huntsville, Texas. Huntsville houses 9 prisons. The prison system is the primary employer in the county. A qualitative data analysis using Altius/tr as a tool for content analysis was used. Throughout the data, community residents consistently indicated solidarity. Emerging from the data were seven themes associated with community solidarity:(a) unqualified community pride, (b) normalization, (c) defensiveness against the media, (d) qualified community pride, (e) denial, (f) community and myths, (g) economics.

This action research analyzes the effects of collective musical practice in prisons, particularly in the detention centers of Bapaume (France) and Albolote (Spain). It uses art as a methodology to transform this hostile environment, characterized by violence, distrust, and fear, through orchestral practice and musical creation. This creates social spaces where imposed conviviality becomes accepted and sought after, as it is based on the reciprocity of exchanges and resonance (both musical and social), fostering favorable conditions for overcoming the trials of confinement. What is the impact of collective musical practice and creation in this context? What does prison do to art and research? The thesis attempts to answer these questions by showing the necessity of finding other methodologies and devices (the participatory orchestra) to account for the prison environment and its challenges. This action research (semi-structured interviews, quantitative and qualitative approaches) is combined here with research-creation to meet the needs of the investigation, which covers 9 interventions (from May 2016 to December 2022): three in Albolote with the participation of 8 women and 16 men, and six in Bapaume with 40 women and 90 men, totaling 138 participants and a mixed generational group aged 18 to 65. Its objective was to analyze the influence of the participatory orchestra as a strategy to (re)create spaces in the exercise of coexistence, promoting resilience and the (re)integration of detainees from Bapaume and Albolote. The research concludes that collective musical practice and creation constitute powerful tools of social education, opening possibilities not only for detainees but for the entire prison community and beyond, to society, likely to cast a new light on this population through concerts and creations organized within the prison

Opportunities for social reintegration of offenders in Zitácuaro and Uruapan are low. This research was intended to determine which aspects might help improving those opportunities, and systematize an alternative. The goals were achieved through a descriptive, correlational and cross-sectional study. The results allowed to affirm that prison life characteristics which guarantee dignity and integrity for prisoners, as well as governance conditions and sufficient services, are aspects which could improve intervention for offenders to return to life in freedom. At the same time, sufficient individual, familiar and community interventions might improve opportunities for social reintegration of offenders. Finally, the public policy recommended focuses on the strengthening of offenders emotional and cognitive competences, restorative justice and post-penitentiary assistance plans, and sensitization programs for communities of return.

Résumé :
Early medieval Europe lacked both the classical polis and the high medieval parish. No legal or administrative apparatus delimited who belonged to each local church and what area lay under the pastoral care of its clergy. Instead, preachers and congregants employed the Rogation Days and other mandatory rituals as times for community formation and social solidarity, when the local church exhibited itself to itself as a Christian body. Ideally, all Christians processed together, fasting and in penitential garb: an amorphous mass of laity led by their clergy. Early medieval Rogation processions never “beat the bounds” in the physical sense of walking around the limits of a parish. But they did beat the bounds in another sense: they demarcated the borders of the Christian people.

Résumé :
This book re-examines the alterations in Western European life that followed widespread conversion to Christianity—the phenomena traditionally termed “Christianization”; it re-centers scholarly paradigms for Christianization around the development of mandatory rituals. One prominent ritual—Rogationtide, a three-day penitential procession before Ascension Thursday—supplies an ideal case study demonstrating a new paradigm of “Christianization without religion.” Christianization in the Middle Ages was not a slow process through which a Christian system of religious beliefs and practices replaced an earlier pagan system. “Religion,” in the sense of a fixed system of belief bounded off from other spheres of life, did not exist in the Middle Ages. Rather, Christianization was primarily ritual performance. Being a Christian meant joining a local church community. After the fall of Rome, mandatory rituals such as Rogationtide arose to separate a Christian commonwealth from the pagans, heretics, and Jews outside it. A Latin West between the polis and the parish had its own institution—the Rogation procession—for organizing local communities. For medieval people, sectarian borders were flexible, except when they did not want those borders to be so. Rituals served to demarcate these borders. Rogationtide is an ideal case study of this demarcation, because it was an emotionally powerful feast that combined pageantry with doctrinal instruction, community formation, social ranking, devotional exercises, and bodily mortification. As a result, rival groups quarrelled over the holiday’s meaning and procedure, sometimes violently, in order to reshape the local order and ban people and practices as non-Christian.

Résumé :
Abstract It is a matter of pride to every American that the new penitentiary system has been established and successfully practiced in this country. That community which . . . persevered in this novel experiment, until success has crowned its perseverance, must occupy an elevated place in the scale of political or social civilization. Francis Lieber (quoted in de Beaumont and de Tocqueville 1833, p. 6) The falls of Niagara and your penitentiary are two objects I might almost say I most wish to see in America.

Résumé :
In the Foreword to Gerard Robinson and Elizabeth English Smith's Education for Liberation volume on educational initiatives in prison, Newt Gingrich and Van Jones note that educational programs “do something powerful: they give hope and dignity to the incarcerated.” The authors wholeheartedly agree and while they recognize the importance of higher education programs that confer degrees and therefore credentials out in the free world, they find that education can be broadly understood in prison in ways that greatly enhance the hope and dignity of the incarcerated. In this chapter, they explore the creation of a Japanese-style healing garden at the Oregon State Penitentiary (OSP), a maximum security, 2,000-person male prison in Salem, Oregon. This prisoner-led initiative was a resounding success, despite all the odds against it, because it was animated by a philosophy of transformative justice that both prison administration and prisoners could believe in, and it embraced the need for meaningful and inclusive community partnerships.

Résumé :
Leaving a prison unit after serving a custodial sentence is a difficult time for many inmates, full of anxiety about reintegrating back into the community. For many inmates, especially those at risk of a homelessness crisis, intervention suport is one of the priority interventions. The aim of this article is to identify forms of intervention-inclusion support for people experiencing penitentiary isolation. In addition to the theoretical issues, excerpts from own research of an individual case analysis will be presented, which will further bring the specifics of the professionalisation of intervention support in a custodial environment.

Résumé :
The study addresses restorative justice as an alternative to deprivation of liberty in the Brazilian penal system. Its ability to promote social reintegration by focusing on reconciliation between perpetrator, victim and community stands out, contrasting with the challenges of the current penitentiary system. It uses legislation and doctrinal positions as its main sources, adopting hermeneutic, exploratory, descriptive and inductive methods to investigate the topic.
