Résumé :
ABSTRACTThirty-six three-, four- and five-year-olds were asked to select labels for deceptive stimuli (e.g. for an eraser that looked like a pencil). Three types of labelling were investigated –simple (e.g. ‘is an eraser’); appearance-predicated (e.g. ‘looks like an eraser’); and reality-predicated (e.g. ‘is really and truly an eraser’). An age-related appearance-reality shift was observed in simple labelling (e.g. older children were more likely than younger ones to accept eraser and reject pencil as simple names for the pencil-eraser). This trend was robust over method and semantic domain, though weaker with object than with colour labels. As in previous research, older children were more likely than younger ones to map different appearance- than reality-predicated labels onto an item (e.g. to accept that the pencil-eraser looks like a pencil, but is really and truly an eraser); however, all age groups were reluctant to extend more than one name to a stimulus via a common predicate (e.g. to accept two reality-predicated labels for the same object). This one-label-per-predicate pattern was observed more frequently within reality than within appearance predicates; more frequently with colour than with object names, and with questions blocked by predicate than by name. It is argued that younger children maintained this pattern because of inflexible encoding, but that older ones did so because of better understanding of the appearance-reality distinction, greater reality dominance, and a Mutual Exclusivity bias.

Résumé :
A 14-year-old male patient had an ocular trauma with a pencil. Biomicroscopic examination revealed a broken part of pencil into the cornea. Foreign body removal and corneal wound closure were performed in the same day. After corneal repair, there was a grade 4+ anterior chamber reaction just like in preoperative examination. Dilated examination showed a very small piece broken tip of pencil on the upper nasal quadrant of the lens. A small and linear deposition was also seen on endothelial surface. Endothelial deposition and foreign body disappeared with intensive topical steroid treatment.

Résumé :
One-dimensional (1D) ZnO nanorods with different shapes and high aspect ratio were successfully synthesized using a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted or sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-assisted hydrothermal process at 90°C for 5h. The surface morphology and structure of nanocrystals were characterized by FE-SEM and XRD. Experimental results showed that the typical morphology of ZnO crystals grown with additive of CTAB was pencil-like rods, while the ZnO crystals grown with SDS showed needle-like rods. The gas sensors had been fabricated using 1D ZnO powders to examine the response towards 40ppm NO2 in the range of operating temperature from 150 oC to 450 oC. Compared with needle-like ZnO crystals, the NO2 gas sensor based on pencil-like ZnO nanostructure had better selectivity at the same gas concentration.

Résumé :
Abstract. Previous studies revealed that performance in paper-and-pencil tests of attention, such as the d2-R test, improves with practice, though the sources of these practice effects are yet unknown. Practice effects in psychometric tests are a serious problem because they impede the evaluation of test performance and constrain the utility of these tests. This study addresses the role of target-specific learning for practice in a d2-like paper-and-pencil test of attention. Two variants of a d2-like test, which exclusively differed in the set of target stimuli, were constructed. Participants were tested on two days separated by one week. Participants in the control condition searched for the same targets (among the same distractors) in each session, whereas participants in the test group searched for different targets (among the same distractors) in each session. Results showed practice benefits in both groups, but benefits were larger in the control group than in the test group. The results suggest that practice improves the processing of target features in paper-and-pencil tests of attention. Hence, using two versions with different sets of targets may effectively reduce practice effects in d2-like tests of attention. Further implications of the findings are discussed.

Résumé :
On the basis of the CALPHAD (Calculation of Phase Diagrams) method, the compositional range of stable miscibility gap and volume fractions of the two liquid phases in the Cu–Fe–Cr–Ni system were predicted, which can provide the guidance for design of self-formed composite materials. Based on such information, the self-formed pencil-like bulk composite materials consisting of copper alloy and two kinds of stainless steels were prepared by controlling the compositions of Cu-rich and Fe-rich phases in immiscible liquid system by the conventional casting process. The experimental results are in good agreement with the ones predicted by calculation. This study indicates that it is possible to develop the pencil-like bulk composite materials consisting of copper alloy and stainless steels by the conventional casting process.

In this paper, we introduce a technique for AI generation of the Bullets puzzle, a paper-and-pencil variant of Minesweeper. Whereas traditional Minesweeper can be lost due to the need to guess mine or non-mine positions, our puzzle is fully deducible from a minimal clue set. Puzzle generation is based on analysis and optimization of solutions from a human-like reasoning engine that classifies types of deductions. Additionally, we provide insights to subjective puzzle quality, minimal clue sampling trade-offs, and optimal bullet density.

Résumé :
Due to their electrochemical and economical characteristics, pencil graphite electrodes (PGEs) gained in recent years a large applicability to the analysis of various types of inorganic and organic compounds from very different matrices. The electrode material of this type of working electrodes is constituted by the well-known and easy commercially available graphite pencil leads. Thus, PGEs are cheap and user-friendly and can be employed as disposable electrodes avoiding the time-consuming step of solid electrodes surface cleaning between measurements. When compared to other working electrodes PGEs present lower background currents, higher sensitivity, good reproducibility, and an adjustable electroactive surface area, permitting the analysis of low concentrations and small sample volumes without any deposition/preconcentration step. Therefore, this paper presents a detailed overview of the PGEs characteristics, designs and applications of bare, and electrochemically pretreated and chemically modified PGEs along with the corresponding performance characteristics like linear range and detection limit. Techniques used for bare or modified PGEs surface characterization are also reviewed.

Résumé :
Crystal structure data on hydroxyapatite, octocalcium phosphate and brushite have been used in order to predict their crystal morphology on the basis of the Hartman-Perdok theory. The predicted forms are pencil-like for hydroxyapatite, board-like for octocalcium phosphate and flattened needle-like for brushite. Although the biominerals in bone, dentine and tooth enamel have an apatite structure, their form is nbt pencil-like. This may partially be due to the fact that precursor phases are nucleated first in these tissues during mineralization and that these precursor phases are transformed later by topotactical reactions into compounds with apatite structure or that they serve as nuclei for ongrowth of apatite. The form of the mineral particles in mature bone and dentin is board-like which indicates that octocalcium phosphate might be their precursor phase. However, the form of the crystals in mature enamel is flattened needle-like which indicates that brushite is their precursor phase. It is argued that a possible difference in the nature of the precursor phase may be due primarily to differences in the cellular activities of the odontoblasts and osteoblasts as compared to those of the ameloblasts, and secondarily to matrix effects. In both cases, however, the main effect of the matrix seems to be that it acts as a mechanical barrier leading to a limited form and size and, of course, a certain orientation of the crystals, rather than as an agent for heterogeneous nucleation. The validity of the present considerations depends as yet on the assumption that the ions and molecules occurring in body fluids do not dominate the habit of calcium phosphate crystals.

Résumé :
A study was conducted to determine the role that plant developmental stage (DS) has on the efficacy of cyclanilide (CYC), a plant growth regulator (PGR) with cytokinin-like properties. In 2007, single foliar applications of 200 ppm CYC were applied to ‘Snow White’ Indian hawthorn (Rhaphiolepis indica (L.) Lindl. Ex Ker Gawl.) and ‘Sky Pencil’ holly (Ilex crenata Thunb.) at progressively later stages of lateral shoot development: bud break (DS 1), active shoot elongation (DS 2), or to recently matured shoots (DS 3). The experiment was repeated in 2008 and included an additional application to Sky Pencil holly before bud break (DS 0). In 2007 and 2008, Snow White Indian hawthorn treated with CYC at all DS formed more shoots than untreated plants, except in summer 2008 (DS 3 only) and fall 2008 (DS 1 only). New shoot counts of CYC-treated Indian hawthorn were 53 to 67% and 46 to 65% higher than those of untreated plants in summer and fall, respectively, in 2007 and 26 to 39% and 29 to 48% higher in summer and fall, respectively, in 2008. In the fall of 2008, the only effect of DS on shoot counts of Indian hawthorn was that plants treated at DS 3 formed 29% more new shoots than plants treated at DS 1; DS had no effect on shoot counts in 2007. Symptoms of foliar injury to Indian hawthorn included reddening, chlorosis, and cupping of new growth that appeared between 15 and 30 days after treatment (DAT) and, although not quantified in 2007, were generally less severe and more transitory as DS increased. In 2007, foliar injury lasted until about 90 to 120 DAT in DS 2 and DS 3 plants, but was more persistent in DS 1 plants. In 2008, foliar injury was also transient, regardless of DS, but was highest when CYC was applied at DS 1 or DS 2. CYC-treated Sky Pencil holly had formed more shoots than untreated plants by summer and fall of 2007. Although Sky Pencil holly treated at DS 2 in 2007 formed fewer shoots than DS 1 plants in fall, quality ratings were higher due to a larger canopy that was dense and compact. In the fall of 2008, shoot counts of CYC-treated Sky Pencil holly were greater than those of untreated plants, regardless of DS, and there were no effects of DS on shoot counts. Quality ratings of Sky Pencil holly treated at DS 2 or DS 3, but not at DS 0 and DS 1, were higher than those of untreated plants. In both years of the study, symptoms of foliar injury on Sky Pencil holly were minimal, suggesting a relatively high tolerance to foliar-applied CYC, and all plants were considered marketable.

Résumé :
The paper fills gaps in knowledge about Kuratowski operations which are already in the literature. The Cayley table for these operations has been drawn up. Techniques, using only paper and pencil, to point out all semigroups and its isomorphism types are applied. Some results apply only to topology, and one cannot bring them out, using only properties of the complement and a closure-like operation. The arguments are by systematic study of possibilities.

Résumé :
All students can succeed in creating mathematical art. This article offers some ideas about creating mathematical art based on number patterns. It includes a process that integrates number and geometry and results in attractive and useful patterned squares. Students may perform the activity with paper and pencil or use computer software like The Geometer's Sketchpad. The diagrams in this article were completed using Sketchpad. The article also features the use of conjecturing as an important element in mathematics instruction.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTThe relative importance of appearance and potential function in children's object naming was examined. Potential function is an object capability that may not be currently realized (e.g. an empty mug has the potential to hold coffee). In Study 1, sixteen children from each of three age groups (3;8, 4;8, and 6;1) were taught novel names for unfamiliar objects; they then had to decide whether these applied to items that resembled the training objects in either appearance or potential function. The youngsters were also shown deceptive objects (e.g., an eraser that looked like a pencil) and had to choose between familiar appearance and function names for them (e.g., pencil or eraser). The frequency of function-based responding in both tasks increased with age. In Study 2, the name training procedure was revised so that equal emphasis was given to both apparent and functional features. The main results of the first study were replicated. Neither study obtained evidence of a strong relation between the appearance—function shift and increased under-standing of the appearance—reality distinction.

Résumé :
Barium carbonate (BaCO3) nano-particles were synthesized from the mixture of Ba(OH)2.8H2O and Na2CO3 by mechano-chemical route without any subsequent heat treatment of the as-milled powders. Effects of milling time and addition of process control agents (PCA) on the phase composition and morphology of products have been investigated. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD results show that BaCO3 nano-particles were synthesized only after 10 minutes of mechanical milling and phase evolution was not taken place by further milling. SEM results indicated that pencil-like and globular-like were two major morphologies of the particles. Addition of stearic acid as a PCA resulted in homogenized globular-like nano-particles with a mean particle size of 54 nm.
