Résumé :
ABSTRACTThirty-six three-, four- and five-year-olds were asked to select labels for deceptive stimuli (e.g. for an eraser that looked like a pencil). Three types of labelling were investigated –simple (e.g. ‘is an eraser’); appearance-predicated (e.g. ‘looks like an eraser’); and reality-predicated (e.g. ‘is really and truly an eraser’). An age-related appearance-reality shift was observed in simple labelling (e.g. older children were more likely than younger ones to accept eraser and reject pencil as simple names for the pencil-eraser). This trend was robust over method and semantic domain, though weaker with object than with colour labels. As in previous research, older children were more likely than younger ones to map different appearance- than reality-predicated labels onto an item (e.g. to accept that the pencil-eraser looks like a pencil, but is really and truly an eraser); however, all age groups were reluctant to extend more than one name to a stimulus via a common predicate (e.g. to accept two reality-predicated labels for the same object). This one-label-per-predicate pattern was observed more frequently within reality than within appearance predicates; more frequently with colour than with object names, and with questions blocked by predicate than by name. It is argued that younger children maintained this pattern because of inflexible encoding, but that older ones did so because of better understanding of the appearance-reality distinction, greater reality dominance, and a Mutual Exclusivity bias.

A 14-year-old male patient had an ocular trauma with a pencil. Biomicroscopic examination revealed a broken part of pencil into the cornea. Foreign body removal and corneal wound closure were performed in the same day. After corneal repair, there was a grade 4+ anterior chamber reaction just like in preoperative examination. Dilated examination showed a very small piece broken tip of pencil on the upper nasal quadrant of the lens. A small and linear deposition was also seen on endothelial surface. Endothelial deposition and foreign body disappeared with intensive topical steroid treatment.

Résumé :
In the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) field, the Acoustic Emission (AE) technique is a passive method by which damage is localized and identified by capturing Lamb Waves (LW) signals propagating in a plate-like structure. The reconstruction of emitted signals from damage at the source location constitutes one of the main challenges faced by the SHM community. Recently, the application of a Frequencies Compensation Transfer Function (FCTF) has been used to reconstruct narrowband and broadband signals through a hybrid experimental and numerical Time Reversal (TR) process on aluminum plates. This study aims to reconstruct through experimental methods different types of narrowband and broadband signals on different plate-like structures making use of FCTF. In particular, Hanning Window (HW) and numerical broadband signals have been reconstructed for aluminum and steel plates. The results obtained in this study show how the FCTF method can be applied to different types of materials in plate-like structures. Moreover, the FCTF method has been applied on real broadband signals emitted by the Pencil Lead Break (PLB) technique and Rock Impact (RI) test. These last results prove that the FCTF method is able to compensate for the frequency changes on a single wave packet. Such results are fundamental, as they open the possibility to reconstruct any type of source signals emitted by any damage type.

Résumé :
2007/2008
This thesis is devoted to the study of the growth of III-V nanowires (NWs) by catalyst assisted and catalyst free molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The nanostructures have been routinely characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and, to a minor extent by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), scanning photoemission microscopy (SPEM), extended X-ray absrorption fi ne structure analysis (EXAFS), photoluminescence (PL) and trans- port measurements have given an important contribution on specifi c topics. The first section of this thesis reports on GaAs, InAs, and InGaAs NWs growth by Au assisted MBE. A substrate treatment is proposed that improves uniformity in the NWS morphology. Thanks to a careful statistical analysis of the NWs shape and dimensions as a function of growth temperature and duration, evidence is found of radial growth of the NWs taking place together with the axial growth at the tip. This eff ect is interpreted in term of temperature dependent diff usion length of the cations on the NWs lateral surface. The control of the NWs radial growth allowed to grow core shell InGaAs/GaAs NWs, displaying superior optical quality. A new procedure is proposed to protect NWs surface from air exposure. This procedure allowed to perform ex-situ SPEM studies of electronic properties of the NWs. The second part of this thesis is devoted to Au-free NWs growth. GaAs and InAs NWs were successfully grown for the first time using Mn as catalyst. Incorporation of Mn in the NW is studied using EXAFS technique. It is shown that Mn atoms are incorporated in the body of GaAs NWs. Use of low growth temperature is suggested in order to improve the Mn incorporation inside GaAs NWs and obtain NWs with magnetic properties. Finally, growth of GaAs and InAs NWs on cleaved Si subtrate is demonstrated without the use of any outside metal catalyst. Two kinds of nanowires have been obtained. The experimental findings suggest that the two types of nanowires grow after di fferent growth processes.

This chapter describes Jefferson’s encounter with a strange new writing device for copying called the “Stylograph.” Cutting into “Carbonated paper” with “glass brought to a point like a pencil,” this instrument “provided an exact copy of an author’s original.” Jefferson experimented with his new toy, making literary duplicates by cutting across layers with his stylograph on October 5, 1807—the same day he also started to search for a translator to decipher the layered Arabic documents which had cut their way across the country, carried by Ira P. Nash. Canvassing the capital, Jefferson eventually sent his plea for help to Philadelphia on October 18th, even as he experimented with his new stylograph, ensuring that copies of his own letters were preserved. By the time October came to an end, however, Jefferson would discover that he was not alone in reproducing pivotal texts.

Résumé :
This chapter examines the phenomenon of mobs discriminating in the name of Zulu in 2008. In June 2008, a wave of xenophobic attacks against migrants and foreigners that began in Gauteng spread across Johannesburg. Mobs were forcing people to take “tests” to establish their nationality. A language test is first, where one is asked to label certain body parts in isiZulu. These Zulu language “tests” were compared to the “pencil test,” once used by apartheid government officials to help them refine racial classifications. The chapter considers how ownership of a language like Zulu is being asserted in pursuit of an exclusive right to ownership of property and opportunity. It argues that Zulu is the language of xenophobia, used to discriminate against, and to deprive. It also comments on the Chief of The Point, a satirical persona adopted by Volovolo Memela in his newspaper column, “Ngeso likaVolovolo.”

Résumé :
The authors investigate user requirements regarding the interface design for semantic multimedia search and retrieval based on a prototypical implementation of a search engine for multimedia content on the web. Thus, unlike existing image or video search engines, they are interested in true multimedia content combining different media assets into multimedia documents like PowerPoint presentations and Flash files. In a user study with 20 participants, the authors conducted a formative evaluation based on the think-aloud method and semi-structured interviews in order to obtain requirements to a future web search engine for multimedia content. The interviews are complemented by a paper-and-pencil questionnaire to obtain quantitative information. As a result, the authors elicit requirements to a web search engine for multimedia content. Among them, scalability and personalization of the presented information are identified as the main goals. Based on the requirements, they present mockups demonstrating the user interface of a future multimedia search and retrieval engine.

Résumé :
This chapter analyses where Davis uses practices that are like translation in her stories and where Davis uses translation as a narrative focus of her stories. In the first half, Davis’s work is read through the paradigms of collage, quotation and pastiche. Through close readings of stories such as ‘Once A Very Stupid Man’ and ‘Southward Bound, Reads Worstward Ho’, the chapter argues that Davis’s writing problematizes the notion of the unitary text and questions understandings of authorship. As with the stories from Flaubert and her Marie Curie story, the original text is never full incorporated into her work, yet is part of it. The second half of the chapter analyses the stories ‘Foucault and Pencil’ and ‘The Letter’. In the former, a reading of Foucault stands in for understanding an argument with another character; emotion is displaced into intellect. In ‘The Letter’, this process involves the central character trying to decipher the meaning of a poem in French which has been sent as a letter. In all these stories, translation is central to Davis’s narrative production and, at the same time, serves to highlight the connection between translation and writing in her work in general.

Résumé :
Abstract The Cadia district of New South Wales contains four alkalic porphyry Au-Cu deposits (Cadia East, Ridgeway, Cadia Hill, and Cadia Quarry) and two Cu-Au-Fe skarn prospects (Big Cadia and Little Cadia), with a total of ~50 Moz Au and ~9.5 Mt Cu (reserves, resources, and past production). The ore deposits are hosted by volcaniclastic rocks of the Weemalla Formation and Forest Reefs Volcanics, which were deposited in a submarine basin on the flanks of the Macquarie Arc during the Middle to Late Ordovician. Alkalic magmatism occurred during the Benambran orogeny in the Late Ordovician to early Silurian, resulting in the emplacement of monzonite intrusive complexes and the formation of porphyry Au-Cu mineralization. Ridgeway formed synchronous with the first compressive peak of deformation and is characterized by an intrusion-centered quartz-magnetite-bornite-chalcopyrite-Au vein stockwork associated with calc-potassic alteration localized around the apex of the pencil-like Ridgeway intrusive complex. The volcanic-hosted giant Cadia East deposit and the intrusion-hosted Cadia Hill and Cadia Quarry deposits formed during a period of relaxation after the first compressive peak of the Benambran orogeny and are characterized by sheeted quartz-sulfide-carbonate vein arrays associated with subtle potassic, calc-potassic, and propylitic alteration halos.

Résumé :
Many of us who work with pencil, pen, or computer like to vary the intellectual routine by doing something “real.” Some build cabinets and canoes, some sing in choral groups, others join first aid squads. I take care of our garden. Gardening is an especially good activity for eggheads because it combines physical labor with the opportunity to be creative. Unlike the ideas in the books I write, however, my creations in the gar-den are quickly put to the test. My experience last summer is a case in point. I like to eat what I grow, so I have little patience with flowers and other ornamentals. I tolerate the ones that were planted around the house when we first arrived: yew, hemlock, cherry laurel, forsythia, flame azalea—the usual things provided by botanically challenged, cost-conscious builders. If these woody perennials get sick I do what I can for them, given my lack of knowledge and low level of interest. Some times I fertilize, sometimes I continue to refrain from fertilizing, depending on my intuition in the particular case. The same goes for watering. Our flame azalea is down to one tiny branch with eleven leaves on it, about the same as last year. I don’t know whether I am keeping it alive against all odds, or preventing it from making the full recovery that it would be capable of if cared for by somebody else. I view my role in the treatment of our ornamental plantings like that of the remote HMO clerk who makes the critical decisions in a complex medical case; any unfortunate consequences of my ignorance are not of great concern. Fruits and vegetables are another matter. I am not much more knowledgeable about them than about azaleas, but I try a lot harder. Because this is a story about vegetables, I will skip the fruits, except to note that we pick our own sour cherries, figs, peaches, plums, grapes, apricots, and apples—in sharply decreasing order of abundance (squirrels got all of my apples this year).

Résumé :
I am the only person in my university building who wants no part of the university’s free e-mail and who does not surf the Internet, which makes me the last holdover from the days when conversations by voice, dusty books, and rectangular white envelopes with colored stamps in the upper right corner were our primary means of communication. Nevertheless, rumors of the new and wonderful electronic inventions reach me often—from my wife and children and especially from my students. Like the seven golden cities of Cibola, the Internet beckons; if I had the energy of Coronado, I would seek it out and master it. Being lazy, I sit in my office with nothing more modern than an automatic pencil, a telephone, and an aging Macintosh Centris equipped only with Microsoft Word 5.1,and think about what I am missing. I imagine the chat rooms, for instance, abuzz with scintillating conversations, the twenty-first century equivalent of the salon of Madame deStaël or that celebrated Oxford club where J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis read to each other from their latest manuscripts. I know that chat rooms are not really rooms, but in my mind I can see one clearly: the lustrous walnut paneling, the floor-to-ceiling mullioned windows framed by the thick pleats of burgundy velvet drapes, the comfortable arm chair supholstered in rich mahogany leather, and next to one of the chairs—my chair—a small Louis Quatorze table holding a Waterford snifter with a generous dollop of Napoleonic brandy. Sometimes the rooms are contemporary in style, with walls consisting of giant liquid-crystal sur-faces that shimmer with ever-changing, abstract splashes of color o bold, functional patterns of steel-like beams intricately linked, endlessly dissolving and reconnecting. In place of chairs there are convivial arrangements of very large, “smart” cushions that rapidly mold them-selves to the contours of the body regardless of whether one wishes to sit or recline. And the conversations! Here must be the ultimate purpose for which language was invented, especially my language, English, with its unparalled wealth of words.

Résumé :
In this research, we developed a skin-like tactile sensor array to measure the contact pressure of curved surfaces. The sensor array is laminated into a thin film with 3mm in thickness and can easily be wrapped around a pencil without damaging its skin-like structure. So far we have achieved the array containing 8×16 sensor elements. Its spatial resolution is 1 element per 9mm2 area and it can measure the pressure up to 360kPa. The sensor-array patch contains three layers. The upper and lower layers are polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) thin films embedded with conductor strips formed by PDMS-based silver nanowires (AgNWs) networks. The middle layer is formed by the mixing of nickel powder with liquid PDMS for contact force measurement. Experimental tests have demonstrated that conductor strips on the upper layer can maintain their resistances around 23Ω with less than 4Ω increase when the tensile strain is up to 50%. Noted is that conductors made with carbon nanotubes can keep its conductivity unchanged for up to only 40% tensile strain. Through fatigue tests, it is observed that the measured AgNWs/PDMS conductor strip exhibits low and stable resistances. This is one of the desired behaviors of the stretchable interconnects for signal transmission. The integrated sensor system can successfully measure the contact pressure induced by objects of different shapes. It can be applied on curved or non-planar surfaces in robots or medical devices for force detection and feedback.

Résumé :
The present paper focuses on the latest research about the difference between cursive writing and keyboarding, in an era where children are texting, tapping and typing on keyboards more than ever, leaving less time to master that "old-fashioned" skill known as handwriting. But what is the real value of learning handwriting skills versus being able to type 100 words per minute on a QWERTY keyboard? Since the personal computer and now the telephone have become the primary methods for recording our ideas, we simply do not write with an actual writing implement like a pen or pencil as much as we used to. Or, the benefits of gripping and moving in a controlled manner a pen or pencil on a piece of paper reach beyond communication. Emerging research shows that handwriting increases brain activity, hones fine motor skills, and can predict a child's academic success in ways that keyboarding can't. So, we must ask ourselves, is this really a problem? Studies suggest there's real value in learning and maintaining this basic skill, even as we increasingly communicate electronically via keyboards big and small. Instead of asking questions about the validity of teaching handwriting in schools at a time when technology is asserting its primacy, it would be more beneficial for the educational actors to understand that both of these views are not mutually exclusive, and that we can even use, in an interesting twist, new software for touch-screen devices, such as the iPad, to reinvigorate the practice. The pages below aim to reflect that, regardless of what age they are in, students need a variety of technologies, including cursive handwriting, in order to succeed.

Dans ASME 2014 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2014-37658.

Résumé :
A novel approach of locating damage in welded joints is proposed based on acoustic emission (AE) beamforming, which is particularly applicable to complex plate-like structures. First, five AE sensors used to obtain AE signals generated from damage are distributed on the surface of the structure in a uniform line array. Then the beamforming method is adopted to detect the weld joints in the area of interest rather than all the points of the whole structure, and to determine the location and obtain information of AE sources. In order to study the ability of the proposed method more comprehensively, a rectangular steel tube with welded joints is taken for the pencil-lead-broken test. The localization results indicate that the proposed localization approach can effectively localize the failure welded joints. This improvement greatly reduces the cost of computation and also improves the efficiency of localization work compared with the traditional beamforming.

Résumé :
Abstract Patients suffering from medical conditions resulting in hand impairment experience difficulty in performing simple daily tasks, like getting dressed or using a pencil, resulting in a poorer quality of life. Rehabilitation attempts to help such individuals regain a sense of control and normalcy. In this context, recent advances in robotics have manifested in multiple designs of hand exoskeletons and exosuit gloves for assistance and rehabilitation. These designs are typically actuated using pneumatic, shape memory alloys and motor-tendon actuators. The proposed Motor Tendon Actuated Exosuit Glove (MTAEG) with an open palm is a soft material glove capable of both flexion and extension of all four fingers of the human hand. Its minimally invasive design maintains an open palm to facilitate haptic and tactile interaction with the environment. The MTAEG achieves flexion-extension motion with joint angles of 45° at the metacarpal joint which is 57% of the desired motion; 90° at the proximal interphalangeal joint which is 100% of the desired motion; and 50° at the distal interphalangeal joint which is 96% of the desired motion. The paper discusses the challenges in achieving the desired motion without the ability to directly model human tendons, and the inability to actuate joints individually.

Résumé :
Determinations and analysis are needed in agricultural research to verify soil quality, irrigation water quality, yield quantity and quality also. All these data resulted of these measurements can not practicality, if not achieved statistical calculation. In the past, statistical calculation was done with pencil on paper, requiring more time for processing. With the advent of computers and software, this has become much easier time processing statistics becoming increasingly shorter, which greatly increased the efficiency of obtaining results and conclusions in agricultural research. This paper presents examples of statistical calculation like analysis of variance with ANOVA and correlation of experimental data from agricultural production using MS Excel, and creating of maps for physical and chemical indicators of soil or groundwater, using MATLAB. To calculate the variance analysis and correlation are presented the steps to follow in their performance. The paper contain explains in three case studies: first - the analysis of variance in production of wheat in a farm experience with several varieties; the second study - the correlation between productivity elements and sowing density for winter wheat; and the third study - about carrying out maps for physicochemical indices of soil and groundwater from a farm in Big Island of Braila. For a quick understanding of the calculation were carried print screens of each step, with explanations and the modality of creating graphics and how to interpret the final significances. Also, in creating maps is explained everything, step by step, including how to make legends and how can interpret the results. These examples of statistical calculation can be useful to researchers, engineers and students of agricultural sciences.
