Résumé :
In the context of imminent threats concerning biological and chemical warfare agents, the aim of this study was the development of a new method for biological and chemical decontamination, employing non-toxic, film-forming, water-based biodegradable solutions, using a nano sized reagent together with bentonite as trapping agents for the biological and chemical contaminants. Bentonite-supported nanoparticles of Cu, TiO2, and Ag were successfully synthesized and dispersed in a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/glycerol (GLY) aqueous solution. The decontamination effectiveness of the proposed solutions was evaluated by qualitative and quantitative analytical techniques on various micro-organisms, with sulfur mustard (HD) and dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) as contaminants. The results indicate that the peelable active nanocomposite films can be successfully used on contaminated surfaces to neutralize and entrap the hazardous materials and their degradation products. Mechanical and thermal characterization of the polymeric films was also performed to validate the decontamination solution’s potential as peelable-film generating materials. The removal efficacy from the contaminated surfaces for the tested micro-organisms varied between 93% and 97%, while for the chemical agent HD, the highest decontamination factor obtained was 90.89%. DMMP was almost completely removed from the contaminated surfaces, and a decontamination factor of 99.97% was obtained.

Résumé :
Hemicelluloses are biopolymers with versatile properties for biomedical applications. Herein, hemicellulose (arabinoxylan)-based antibacterial film dressings were prepared and characterized. Arabinoxylan was isolated from psyllium husk. Blank and gentamicin-loaded films were prepared by the solvent cast method using glycerol as the plasticizer. The appropriate composition of the films was obtained by varying the amounts of arabinoxylan, glycerol, and gentamicin. The films were found to be transparent, smooth, bubble-free, flexible, and easily peelable with 2% to 3% arabinoxylan. They had uniform thickness and swelled up to 60% of their initial size. The mechanical properties and water vapor transmission rate through the films were found to be suitable for wound-dressing application. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis confirmed drug–film compatibility. In an in vitro release study, more than 85% of the gentamicin was released from the films in 12 h. The antibacterial activities of the gentamicin-loaded films were found to be close to the standard gentamicin solution. The films were found to be cytocompatible in cell viability assay. These results suggested that hemicellulose-based films are promising materials for the dressing of infected wounds.

Résumé :
For fresh-cut and ready-to-eat packaging films, antifog additives (AFs) are commonly used to suppress the formation of water droplets on film surface. To date, the type and dosage of antifogging for PLA based film are less studied. Therefore, in this research, films incorporated with antifog additive were fabricated by cast extrusion technique. The migration behavior of commercial polyglycerol ester as selected AF was investigated. The cold fog test results showed that 3.5 and 5 wt% of AF in 20PBAT/80PLA single layer film can provide clear films without droplet of water within 7 days and 3 hours, respectively. For 2-layer films, the presented of AF in seal layer as 95(20PBAT/80PLA)/5 (polyglycerol ester) and core layer of PLA were prepared having different thicknesses of seal layer/core layer of 20/15 and 10/15 μm. The migration rate of AF in thin 2-layer film (10/15 μm) appeared to be higher than that in 20/15 μm film. Films’ surface could become clear without water droplet (rating scale > 8) within 4 days for 10/15 μm and 7 days for 20/15 μm films. Haze of films was analyzed by haze meter. Haze of 10/15 μm film was decreased from 7 to 4.4, while that of 20/15 μm film was also decreased from 10 to 7.9 when AF appeared on its surface. Both films can be a peelable PLA based lidding film product with low haze (< 10 %) and antifog performance (within 1 month). In addition, 10/15 μm film can be an easy peel lidding film since its peel strength was in an easy peel range (6-10 N/15 mm).

Résumé :
For the fabrication of a peelable coating material that decomposes methyl paraoxone (MPO), a nerve agent simulant, self-crosslinkable waterborne polyurethanes (PUs) containing silane groups at the ends and a metal organic framework (UiO-66) were synthesized. UiO-66 dispersed PU solutions for spray coating were prepared by controlling the amount of silane in PU and the content of UiO-66. PUs with a large amount of silane (more than 7.2 wt.%) were easily gelated by adding UiO-66 because the solution was changed from neutral (pH = 7.3) to strongly acidic (pH = 2.5). Therefore, the silane content in PUs should be carefully controlled for the fabrication of composite films. When UiO-66 was added to the PU with a silane content of 2.7 wt.%, the reinforcing effect by UiO-66 was observed up to 15.3 wt.%, but a further increase in UiO-66 content decreased both the tensile strength and the elongation. The peel strength of the PU composite films on polyethylene (PET) and glass substrates decreased with increasing UiO-66 content, but their MPO conversion increased with increasing UiO-66 content. The PU composite film with 49.5 wt.% of added UiO-66 showed the MPO conversion of 63.2% and was easily peeled off from PET and glass substrates.

Résumé :
Abstract The effects of processing conditions for peelable heat sealing of multilayered polyethylene (PE) films on heat sealing behavior and heat seal strength were investigated. Two sets of seal bars, knurled shape and flat shape, were used for heat sealing. After the heat sealing, the sealed portion was cooled using a set of cooling bars. Heat sealing temperature was adjusted to yield the heat seal strength of 4.0 N/15 mm, 6.0 N/15 mm and 8.0 N/15 mm at the heat sealing pressure of 0.4 MPa for each set of heat sealing bars. The heat seal strength increased with the increase of heat sealing pressure for the knurled shape bars, while it was less affected by heat sealing pressure for the flat shape bars. In situ measurements of the sealing bar clearance and interface temperature revealed that the reduction speed of clearance was significantly affected by the pressure for knurled shape bars, while it was almost independent of pressure for flat shape bars. Even though the temperatures set for the similar heat seal strength were different between knurled and flat shape bars, the maximum temperatures at the interface were almost identical. The effect of the shape of seal bars on heat seal strength became less significant after the sterilization process.

Résumé :
Objective: The present research aims at formulating a mouth dissolving sublingual film of fixed dose combination of doxylamine succinate (DS) and pyridoxine hydrochloride (PH) that would provide faster onset of action and hence relief from the condition of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. Methods: Mouth dissolving films were prepared using a solvent casting technique. A 23 full-factorial design of eight formulations was set up with three independent variables: X1 - polymer 1 HPMC E15 concentration, X2 - polymer 2 HPMC E5 concentration, and X3 - plasticizer PEG 400 concentration. The responses, i.e., dependent variables measured for the study were Y1 disintegration time in seconds, Y2 tensile strength in kg/cm2, Y3 drug release in the percentage of DS, and Y4 drug release in the percentage of PH. All the formulations were evaluated for physicochemical parameters such as clarity, weight, thickness, folding endurance, surface pH, and content. The design expert software 11.0 trial version was used for statistical analysis of the responses. Results and Conclusion: All the film formulations were found to be transparent, non-tacky, and easily peelable having the satisfactory tensile strength and folding endurance. The concentration of polymer 1 and 2 was found to have a significant effect on disintegration time and drug release of mouth dissolving films. The best film formulation DP1 was found to have a disintegration time of 77.66 s and found to release 96.22% of DS and 95.43% of pyridoxine HCl in 21 min.
