Résumé :
Big vein is an economically damaging disease of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) caused by the Olpidium brassicae-vectored Mirafiori lettuce big-vein virus (MLBVV). Lettuce big-vein associated virus (LBVaV) is also frequently identified in symptomatic plants, but no causal relationship has been demonstrated. Although big vein is a perennial problem in the United States, the extent of MLBVV and LBVaV infection and diversity is unknown. Lettuce cultivars partially resistant to big vein reduce losses, but do not eliminate disease. While Lactuca virosa does not develop big vein symptoms, it has not been tested for infection with MLBVV or LBVaV. Lettuce cultivars Great Lakes 65, Pavane, Margarita, and L. virosa accession IVT280 were evaluated for big vein incidence and virus infection in inoculated greenhouse trials. Additional lettuce samples were collected from field sites in California, classified for symptom severity, and evaluated for virus infection. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and nucleotide sequencing were used to determine infection with MLBVV and LBVaV, and sequence diversity among viral isolates, respectively. Infections with MLBVV and MLBVV/LBVaV were dependent on big vein symptom expression in California production areas, and isolates were closely related to those found in Europe and Japan. Partial big vein resistance was identified in Margarita and Pavane; however, MLBVV infection was found in asymptomatic plants. L. virosa IVT280 remained symptomless and virus free, suggesting that it is immune to MLBVV and LBVaV.

New diatom species from the genus Cymbella is described, Cymbella pavanaensis from the Pavana River situated in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Maharashtra, India. The new species description is based on detailed LM and SEM morphological observations. Comparison of the new species with similar, previously-described taxa is made. C. pavanaensis belongs to a group of small-celled species of the genus, which lack differentiated, rounded porelli comprising the apical pore fields. This taxon is reported from a moderately to the highly-polluted urban lotic system, which signifies that even the diatom flora of easily accessible habitats of India is yet to be fully documented.

Résumé :
Heat waves and drought stress are typical aspects of current climate change, significantly affecting the grapevine physiology in many world growing areas. Biostimulants can play an important role in reducing the negative effects of climate change; that’s why this experiment was set up in order to test two new foliar biostimulants (protein hydrolysates of plant origin). The field experiment was carried out in 2017 and 2018 in Oltrepo pavese area (Lombardia region, northwest Italy, 270 m asl), on a six-year-old vineyard of V. vinifera L. cv. Merlot clone 181 grafted on Gravesac, Guyot trellis, 4,000 vines/ha and not irrigated. Two new protein hydrolysates of plant origin were sprayed twice, just after fruit set and 15 days later, by using 2.5 L/ha. Leaf proteomics and metabolomics were studied in 2017, while productive and qualitative data were recorded in both years at harvest (September 1st, 2017 and August 28th 2018). The most significant findings were: (a) the treatments slowed down the grape ripening, by stimulating vegetative activity and reducing sugar accumulation; (b) less heat and drought stress symptoms were observed in the canopies of treated vines, as compared to the control ones.

Résumé :
AbstractAn integrated hydrochemical and geophysical study of the saline paleo-water uprising into the alluvial aquifer of the Oltrepò Pavese plain sector (Po Plain, northern Italy) is presented. This study involved hydrochemical analysis of groundwater, assessment of well logs, and one-, two- and three-dimensional electrical geophysical surveys. The studied area was selected for its characteristic hydrogeological setting. The alluvial aquifer is strongly conditioned by the presence of a buried tectonic discontinuity along which the saline waters are mainly distributed. These waters rise along the discontinuities in the bedrock and flow into the overlying alluvial aquifer. Contamination from saline waters is not spatially and vertically homogeneous within the aquifer. The spatial distribution of Na–Cl waters suggests the existence of plumes of highly mineralized waters that locally reach the aquifer, diffuse and mix with freshwaters. The saline waters show a dilution during upward migration, which is due to mixing with the shallow fresh groundwater. Highly mineralized groundwater is identified even at very shallow depth in correspondence with each plume. On the other hand, there is a lower degree of contamination in those sectors of the aquifer that are further away from the structural discontinuities and this lesser contamination generally only involves the deeper parts of the aquifer.

Résumé :
The growing concern over the effect of atmosphere dispersion resulted from radioactive material was noticeable. This paper demonstrated the variance of atmosphere dispersion factor for accident release from nuclear power plant through running PAVAN (Atmospheric Dispersion of Radioactive Releases from Nuclear Power Plants) model. Also, we investigated the effect of release height (short for H) on atmosphere dispersion factor and compared the correlation between atmosphere dispersion factor and dispersion distance. Our results showed that atmosphere dispersion factor would descend with increased release height. As dispersion distance increasing, the tendency of atmosphere dispersion factor expressed complicated status caused by the difference of wind direction. It was illustrated that the phenomena was caused by the integrated action between the wind direction and release height. The probability distribution of atmosphere dispersion factor also validated that the distribution was depend on the wind direction. Probability analysis indicated that the atmosphere dispersion factor under H=100m was overall less than that under H=75m.

In this thesis, we construct tilings of the real line and the hyperbolic half-plane using train-track maps of IWIP free group automorphisms. One the one hand, we use a substitution defined by P. Arnoux, V. Berthé, A. Siegel, A. Hilion coming from a train-track map of a IWIP free group automorphism to generate substitutive aperiodic tilings of the real line. We show, thanks to a theorem of J. Los about connectivity of train-track representatives of an IWIP automorphism, that the topological type of those tiling spaces is the same up to a choice of train-track representative. Thus we associate, up to an homeomorphism, a tiling space of the real line to a class of an IWIP outer automorphism of Fn, then we extend this result to a conjugacy class of an IWIP element in Out(Fn). On the other hand, we construct from elements of tiling spaces of the real line previously defined, a set of weakly aperiodic for the affine group tilings of the hyperbolic half-plane. We study topological et dynamical properties of the tiling space generated by those hyperbolic tilings. Finally, in the last section we endow tiling spaces previously constructed with a smooth structure thanks to their inverse limit structure

In this thesis, we study some properties of the sets of tilings generated by Wang tilesets that exhibit one or more directions of local determinism, focusing in particular on tilesets that are simultaneously deterministic in the four diagonal directions, referred to as 4-way deterministic. After having exposed an alternative construction of a 4-way deterministic aperiodic tileset, we study several decision problems on these objects and complete in particular Lukkarila’s result of undecidability of the Domino Problem in the 4-way deterministic setting proving the undecidability of the 4-way deterministic periodic Domino Problem. We also prove that some complex families of colorings of the plane such that those generated by substitutions remain sofic in the 4-way deterministic setting. We propose a bi-determinization of the constructions by Durand, Romashchenko and Shen of fixed-point tilesets and give some first applications. Finally, we investigate the idea of extending the radius of the local rule of determinism in order to reduce the set of directions of expansiveness and thus allow the local realization of non-trivial particles and collisions systems. We introduce a new and convenient syntactic model to deal with radius two and revisit some of Lukkarila’s problems in this setting

Self-assembly is the process in which the components of a system, whether molecules, polymers, or macroscopic particles, are organized into ordered structures as a result of local interactions between the components themselves, without exterior guidance. This thesis is devoted to the self-assembly of aperiodic tilings. Aperiodic tilings serve as a mathematical model for quasicrystals - crystals that do not have any translational symmetry. Because of the specific atomic arrangement of these crystals, the question of how they grow still remains open. Our aim is to develop a growth algorithm for a particular class of aperiodic tilings - octagonal tilings of finite type. In order to mimic the growth of real-world quasicrystals, we demand the algorithm be local: the tiles must be added one by one, using only the local information and no data must be stored between the steps. Simulations strongly support the evidence that this algorithm grows aperiodic tilings, up to an unavoidable but neglectable proportion of missing tiles

Sturmian words are a way to encode aperiodic discrete lines. They have been studied since the end of the 19th century and can be characterized in many ways. One of these characterizations, obtained by Vuillon, centers around the notion of return words. This thesis aims to study 2-dimensional Sturmian words as encodings of aperiodic discrete planes. It is a first step towards a characterization of 2-dimensional Sturmian words analogous to that of Vuillon in dimension 1.However, concerns specific to dimension 2, such as the impossibility to concatenate words or the difficulty to locate a factor inside a word make the study much trickier. To tackle this, we introduce in dimension 2 notions of patterns, pointed patterns, localization words and return words. We obtain a 2-dimensional version of a theorem of Morse and Hedlund concerning certain return words in a Sturmian word. This result enables us to establish a new continued-fractions algorithm and to introduce, in a restricted setting, a notion of derived sequence

We study three models of percolation in the plane: Bernoulli percolation, Voronoi percolation, and nodal lines percolation. Bernoulli percolation is often considered as the simplest model which admits a phase transition. Voronoi percolation is a Bernoulli percolation model in random environment. Nodal lines percolation is a level lines percolation model for smooth planar Gaussian fields. We have followed two main threads. The first one is the resarch of similarities between these models, having in mind that we expect that they admit the same scaling limit. We show for instance that the critical level for nodal lines percolation is the self-dual level (namely the zero level) if the Gaussian field is the Bargmann-Fock field, which is natural analytical field. The second main thread is the study of dynamics on these percolation models. We show in particular that if we sample a critical Voronoi percolation model and if we let each point move according to a long range stable Lévy process, then there exist exceptional times with an unbounded cluster

Résumé :
Research in developed countries is often considered as a means to pave the way towards sustainable development in different areas of the society including science and technology, the economy, governance and security. Researchers in developing countries rarely have the opportunity to use their indigenous languages to design, plan and conduct research. Nor do they communicate in their indigenous languages to share their insights and learnings from other parts of the world with colleagues or students. Utilising the languages that researchers, students and teachers, policymakers, the community, and others interested in research understand better can help to generate new knowledge embedded in local realities where sustainable development needs to take root. That is why this book is in Kinyarwanda. The authors hope that writing this book in Kinyarwanda will increase research capacity in the humanities and social sciences in Rwanda and in the region. And that it will increase interaction between all key stakeholders in the planning and conducting of research as well as in analysing, monitoring and evaluating the research process and its outputs.]

Résumé :
This introductory chapter provides a short history of medical humanities and continues on to give an overview of the limits of medical practice, evidence-based medicine (EBM), successes and failures, curricula, and the current state of medical humanities. The medical and health humanities have become a widespread discipline, with journals, institutes, and associations worldwide. Throughout undergraduate medical education, new courses, electives, programs, and research are proliferating. Yet there is very little officially documented about relevance and efficacy in postgraduate medical education. The chapters that follow provide both a rigorous argument for using the arts and humanities in postgraduate medical education and a practical “how-to” that will guide readers in developing arts and humanities initiatives in their own program or medical school. Each chapter provides ideas, hands-on lesson plans, and resources to pave the way forward.

Résumé :
An Industrial Age model continues to shape the way the Army approaches its recruiting, personnel management, training, and education. This outdated personnel management paradigm—designed for an earlier era—has been so intimately tied to the maintenance of Army culture that a self-perpetuating cycle has formed, diminishing the Army's attempts to develop adaptive leaders and institutions. This cycle can be broken only if the Army accepts rapid evolutionary change as the norm of the new era. Recruiting the right people, then having them step into an antiquated organization, means that many of them will not stay as they find their ability to contribute and develop limited by a centralized, hierarchical organization. Recruiting and retention data bear this out. Several factors have combined to force the Army to think about the way it develops and nurtures its leaders. Yet, Vandergriff maintains, mere modifications to today's paradigm may not be enough. Today's Army has to do more than post rhetoric about adaptability on briefing slides and in literature. One cannot divorce the way the Army accesses, promotes, and selects its leaders from its leadership-development model. The Army cannot expect to maintain leaders who grasp and practice adaptability if these officers encounter an organization that is neither adaptive nor innovative. Instead, Army culture must become adaptive, and the personnel system must evolve into one that nurtures adaptability in its policies, practices, and beliefs. Only a detailed, comprehensive plan where nothing is sacred will pave the way to cultural evolution.

Résumé :
Natural hair like structures, produced on aerial surfaces of plants that involves in plant defence, are recognised as trichomes. These trichomes play their role in natural plant defence. These trichomes may be glandular or non-glandular, and secrete exudates, which trap insects and slowdown their movement and act as a physical barrier either against insect attack killing the insects directly or through retarding the insect growth and their population. These trichomes play an important role against both biotic and abiotic stresses. Plant trichomes, specialized epidermal outgrowths found on the surfaces of various plant species, have gained significant attention in recent years due to their diverse roles in plant development, defense, and pest management. Trichomes serve as a physical barrier against herbivores, play a crucial role in the release of chemical deterrents, and act as key components of indirect defense mechanisms. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the multifaceted contributions of plant trichomes in pest management, focusing on their structural characteristics, chemical defense, and ecological interactions with herbivores. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the role of trichomes in pest management can potentially pave the way for the development of novel strategies for sustainable agriculture.

Dans 2017 25th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone25-67262.

Résumé :
PAVAN is an atmospheric dispersion program for evaluating design basis accidental releases of radioactive materials from nuclear power plant. It was developed by Pacific Northwest Laboratory on the basic of the atmospheric dispersion models described in RG 1.145 by NRC (U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission). Using the joint frequency of wind direction, wind speed and atmospheric stability, the atmospheric relative concentration values for the exclusion area boundary and outer LPZ boundary of nuclear power plant are calculated and given by the program. Once the program was introduced, it has been widely used in the radioactive accident consequence assessment, especially in the FSAR (Final Safety Analysis Report) and Report of EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) of NPPs in China. The theory basis and general method of PAVAN is introduced in this paper. And specialty of the X/Q points based on joint frequency data is discussed. The envelope algorithm of PAVAN is also introduced and discussed. The paper presents an improved algorithm based on PAVAN which uses the hourly meteorological data as input instead of joint frequency data. In this algorithm, the size of X/Q points is related to the quantity of the hourly meteorological data. When the quantity is large enough, e.g. 17520 sets of hourly meteorological data in two years, the envelope curve for X/Q points fit more exactly than PAVAN. Using the observed meteorological data, the improved algorithm is compared with PAVAN. The result proves that the former is more accurate. In general, the improved algorithm is relatively conservative. In some situation, the conservativeness is not certain. The factors which result in the uncertainty are deeply discussed. Further optimized are performed by the algorithm. The number of points to seek in envelope curve fitting is set to be dynamic and be a quarter of total number of X/Q points to be fitted. The result shows that increasing the number of points to seek in the iteration process of envelope curve fitting will lead to more conservative X/Q values. Additionally, the optimized algorithm provides X/Q value of 50% probability level for overall site. The value is not relatively conservative. From the standpoint of statistical probability, it is more realistic and is acceptable for potential accident consequence assessment. Especially, when X/Q value of 95% probability level for overall site is too conservative to accept, the value of 50% probability level can be used to replace the conservative value.

Résumé :
Abstract The efficiency of modern drilling operations depends on the planning phase to determine possible well trajectories and the ability of the directional driller to traverse them accurately. Deviations from the planned trajectory while drilling often require updates to the original well plan, involving drilling engineers and rig personnel, which can be time-consuming due to several uncertainties, such as formation tendencies, survey measurement inaccuracy, or estimation errors. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an innovative solution that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) methods, specifically deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to dramatically reduce the need for continuous corrections to the well plan while drilling. In the DRL paradigm, the proposed approach eliminates the need for constant plan adjustments by training a drilling agent to imitate the driller's ability to dynamically adjust the well trajectory in real time based on information from previous drilling logs, well plans, and near-the-bit measurements. This research utilizes a physics-based simulation engine to model a directional drilling environment as a Markov Decision Process (MDP). The MDP is intended for an autonomous system based on geological data models and real-time measurements obtained while drilling (MWD) to train deep reinforcement learning (DRL) agents to drill directional wellbores that maintain maximum contact with the target formation. The simulator incorporates uncertainties of the real-world drilling environment, such as bit walk, formation properties, and drilling speed which, combined, help derive the actions performed by the drilling agent. Our findings reveal that using the proposed methodology in a virtual drilling environment, the drilling agent effectively navigates well paths in the presence of uncertainties and successfully tackle challenges such as avoiding excessive tortuosity and doglegs while maximizing contact with the target formation. Furthermore, the use of domain randomization during training enabled the RL agents to exhibit exceptional generalizability to a wide range of drilling scenarios through the random selection of drilling test sites from a set of unseen sites during training — demonstrating the ability of the agent to adapt and reach the target formation even when the initial well-plan is inaccurate — resulting in a 90% success rate. This self-correcting approach demonstrates the potential for automated, proactive, self-contained steering operations with minimal human involvement. The developed simulation framework is a pioneering approach to enhancing real-time adjustments of drilling well paths using reinforcement learning and optimizing drilling operations. It is the first-of-its-kind method to augment drillers’ ability to navigate through drilling uncertainties and maximize pay zone contact and pave the way for the creation of robust, scalable, and practical autonomous drilling systems.

As a practical demonstration, we have created perovskite anisotropic nanowaveguides and shown a significant impact of anisotropy on high-order guiding modes. These findings pave the way for halide perovskites as a next-generation platform for tunable anisotropic photonics.

In response to the global trend towards implementing sustainable manufacturing practices, we put forth an exploratory approach that uses energy monitoring as a means to introduce sustainability criteria early into manufacturing process planning. Typically cost, quality and time are the indices for manufacturability assessment in generating manufacturing process plans. In this paper, we propose the idea of introducing sustainability to complement cost, quality and time to arrive at alternative sustainable plans in identified manufacturing processes. To be sustainable, it is pertinent that manufacturing firms understand the energy consumption of different manufacturing equipment used to produce products. This will enable industry to implement energy reduction processes in a more effective manner and pave the way for improved and alternate manufacturing solutions. Abstract. This paper and its second part introduce a new formability test based on double-action radial extrusion to characterize material formability in the bulk-to-sheet material flow transitions that are commonly found in metal forming. This first part draws from the presentation of a multidirectional tool, which was designed to convert the vertical press stroke into horizontal movement of the extrusion punches towards each other, to aspects of experimental strain determination, fractography and finite element analysis. The methodology and tooling that are introduced here pave the way for subsequent testing and modelling of the different modes of fracture in three-dimensional to plane-stress evolutions, typical of bulk-to-sheet material flow transitions, by means of the new proposed test.

The Introbots are a group of fluffy and goofy playful artefacts that aim to create an exploration and a commentary of what it means to be introverted and to pave the way for educators and students to reflect on the misconception that extroversion is positive and introversion is a disadvantage to be corrected. In 2018, they were the protagonists of a workshop at the School of Architecture (SOU) in Favara children, when they were used to sensibilize the young students to the topic of introversion and to empower them to design more inclusive playground and urban spaces in the urban environments. The chapter discusses the results of that experience and implicitly shows how the relationship between play and learning is not unilateral but rather biunivocal, and the playful artefacts are not just mere instruments but real tools that can help us to disclose the power of play when it comes to the design of our urban landscapes.

Résumé :
The Annual Report describes the success stories of the key achievements and progress of the Mekong River Commission during 2021 as the first year of implementation of the MRC Strategic Plan (MRC SP) 2021-2025, which is integrated with the Basin Development Strategy (BDS) 2021-2030. Despite having a difficult year in 2021 during the pandemic, some major preparatory work has been completed to pave the way for the implementation of the Strategic Plan 2021-2025. The five Strategic Priorities are identified to direct the realization of 11 BDS Outcomes and 30 Outputs by 2030. The MRC SP 2021-2025 is also based on these five strategic priorities or dimensions, namely Environment, Social, Economic, Climate Change, and Cooperation Dimensions. Each dimension reflects each SP with its equal importance to deliver BDS Outcomes and Outputs. A total of 95 routine and non-routine activities are deemed necessary to achieve these Outputs.

Résumé :
Throughout Latin America low-income neighborhoods have difficulty in paving city streets. Municipalities are typically short of funds, and many informal urban settlements have not yet been properly incorporated into the tax base.An innovative solution has been devised by CEMEX, a multinational cement company based in Mexico, to mobilize both public and private resources to pave streets in low-income neighborhoods. Under the plan, called Mejora tu Calle, city residents will receive individual microloans and then pool the resources to finance half the cost of street pavement for their neighborhood. Municipalities will contribute the other half of the cost.
