Résumé :
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by cognitive impairment and progressive memory loss and drug treatments have limited efficacy. Thus, non-pharmacological interventions, such as music therapy, have shown to be promising as supporting pharmacological treatment and, therefore, may arouse commercial interest regarding the development of this type of product. Thus, this study aims to carry out a patentometric survey on patent registrations with music therapy in the treatment of AD. A systematic search was carried out from 2000 to 2020 on the Orbti-Questel website, searching for documents referring to music therapies in AD. The terms “Alzheimer music methodology active therapy” and “Alzheimer music methodology passive therapy” were used. After searching, reading, and excluding duplicate results, we found four patent families referring to music therapy in AD and all were selected as a result, which was considered little compared to the number of studies published on the subject.

Résumé :
The vibration system of a geophysical prospecting car has three main features: the starting frequency is low (from 1Hz); the load is large (a single spring bears more than 3667Kg of load); the vibration signal is mixed with stochastic components. In this paper, models of an improved passive vibration isolation system and a semi-active fuzzy vibration control system of a geophysical prospecting car frame are established and simulated respectively. In the semi-active fuzzy control system the stiffness of an air spring is adjusted, and at the same time the impact by damping changes on the system performance is also taken into account. In order to evaluate the effects, the displacement and acceleration of car frame and the dynamic load of air spring are taken to comparative analysis. The results indicate that the proposed semi-active scheme can effectively lower the damage from vibroseis to the body of the car.

Résumé :
In this paper, we present results of tectonic and geophysical investigations in the Kenya Rift valley, in the Nakuru area. We compiled a detailed geological map of the area based on published earlier works, well data and satellite imagery. The map was then integrated with original fieldwork and cross sections were constructed. In key areas, we then performed geophysical survey using Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), Hybrid Source Audio MagnetoTelluric (HSAMT), and single station passive seismic measurements (HVSR). In the study area, a volcano-sedimentary succession of the Neogene-Quaternary age characterized by basalts, trachytes, pyroclastic rocks, and tephra with intercalated lacustrine and fluvial deposits crops out. Faulting linked with rift development is evident and occurs throughout the area crosscutting all rock units. We show a rotation of the extension in this portion of the Kenya rift with the NE–SW extension direction of a Neogene-Middle Pleistocene age, followed by the E–W extension direction of an Upper Pleistocene-Present age. Geophysical investigations allowed to outline main lithostratigraphic units and tectonic features at depth and were also useful to infer main cataclasites and fractured rock bodies, the primary paths for water flow in rocks. These investigations are integrated in a larger EU H2020 Programme aimed to produce a geological and hydrogeological model of the area to develop a sustainable water management system.

Reynolds, Andy M. « Signatures of active and passive optimized Lévy searching in jellyfish ». Journal of The Royal Society Interface 11, no 99 (6 octobre 2014) : 20140665. http://dx.doi.org/10.1098/rsif.2014.0665.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Some of the strongest empirical support for Lévy search theory has come from telemetry data for the dive patterns of marine predators (sharks, bony fishes, sea turtles and penguins). The dive patterns of the unusually large jellyfish Rhizostoma octopus do, however, sit outside of current Lévy search theory which predicts that a single search strategy is optimal. When searching the water column, the movement patterns of these jellyfish change over time. Movement bouts can be approximated by a variety of Lévy and Brownian (exponential) walks. The adaptive value of this variation is not known. On some occasions movement pattern data are consistent with the jellyfish prospecting away from a preferred depth, not finding an improvement in conditions elsewhere and so returning to their original depth. This ‘bounce’ behaviour also sits outside of current Lévy walk search theory. Here, it is shown that the jellyfish movement patterns are consistent with their using optimized ‘fast simulated annealing’—a novel kind of Lévy walk search pattern—to locate the maximum prey concentration in the water column and/or to locate the strongest of many olfactory trails emanating from more distant prey. Fast simulated annealing is a powerful stochastic search algorithm for locating a global maximum that is hidden among many poorer local maxima in a large search space. This new finding shows that the notion of active optimized Lévy walk searching is not limited to the search for randomly and sparsely distributed resources, as previously thought, but can be extended to embrace other scenarios, including that of the jellyfish R. octopus . In the presence of convective currents, it could become energetically favourable to search the water column by riding the convective currents. Here, it is shown that these passive movements can be represented accurately by Lévy walks of the type occasionally seen in R. octopus . This result vividly illustrates that Lévy walks are not necessarily the result of selection pressures for advantageous searching behaviour but can instead arise freely and naturally from simple processes. It also shows that the family of Lévy walkers is vastly larger than previously thought and includes spores, pollens, seeds and minute wingless arthropods that on warm days disperse passively within the atmospheric boundary layer.

Résumé :
The Alxa Block is located in the middle part of the Central Asian orogenic belt, which is the coupling belt of the North China, Tarim, and Kazakhstan Plates. The east–west-trending deep faults control stratigraphic distribution and magmatic activity in the region. To detect the EW-trending ore-controlling deep structures, a 440 km NS section of magnetotelluric sounding was conducted from Minle to Ejinaqi. The phase tensor and electrical principal axis were analyzed based on the measured data to build the exploration model. The electrical structure model along the section was obtained using nonlinear conjugate gradient (NLCG) 2D inversion. Combined with the geological, geophysical, and deposit distribution characteristics in the area, the comprehensive study of magnetotelluric sounding profile shows that the resistivity presents as zoned along the profile. The Engelwusu ophiolite mélange belt is stacked in clumps with high and low resistivity, indicating that the northern margin of the Engelwusu Belt subducts below the high-resistivity zone, representing the passive continental margin. The southern end of the Engelwusu ophiolite belt is primarily the prospecting potential area for copper–gold deposits, whereas the northern end of the Engelwusu ophiolite belt corresponds to copper polymetallic deposits.

Résumé :
Power transformers are central elements of power transmission systems and their deterioration can lead to system failures, causing major disruptions in service. Catastrophic failures can occur, posing major environmental hazards due to fires, explosions, or oil spillage. Early fault detection can be accomplished or estimated using electrical sensors or a chemical analysis of oil or gas samples. Conventional methods are incapable of real-time measurements with a low electrical noise due to time-consuming analyses or susceptibility to electromagnetic interference. Optical fiber sensors, passive elements that are immune to electromagnetic noise, are capable of structural monitoring by being enclosed in power transformers. In this work, optical fiber sensors embedded in 3D printed structures are studied for vibration monitoring. The fiber sensor is encapsulated between two pressboard spacers, simulating the conditions inside the power transformer, and characterized for vibrations with frequencies between 10 and 800 Hz, with a constant acceleration of 10 m/s2. Thermal aging and electrical tests are also accomplished, aiming to study the oil compatibility of the 3D printed structure. The results reported in this work suggest that structural monitoring in power transformers can be achieved using optical fiber sensors, prospecting real-time monitoring.

Résumé :
Large acoustic data sets are typically generated from ocean observations with a 160-element coherent hydrophone array and correspondingly larger volumes of acoustic detection events stem from coherent array processing. Beamforming enhances detection signal to-noise ratio, significantly improving detection ranges, as well as providing signal bearing. Here, we develop and train algorithms for the automatic detection and classification of baleen and toothed whale calls present in multiple beamformed spectrograms spanning 360 degree azimuths generated via the passive ocean acoustic waveguide remote sensing technique in the following six categories for the Gulf of Maine: Fin, Sei, Minke, Humpback, unidentified baleen whale downsweep chirps, and general toothed whale encompassing echolocation clicks and whistles below 4 kHz. The classifiers include random forest, support vector machine (SVM), and decision tree applied to hand-engineered features, as well as Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based model on the per-channel energy normalization transform (PCEN) applied directly to beamformed spectrogram imagery. Total accuracy of 95% and average F1-score of 85% are achieved using random forest classifier. The processing flow, including beamforming, PCEN extraction and call classification, run in real-time making the methods suitable for real-world applications, such as marine mammal monitoring and mitigation in ocean hydrocarbon prospecting and wind farm installations.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis explored whether haemodynamic responses to psychological stress test predict future blood pressure (BP) levels: the Reactivity Hypothesis. The research included a systematic review and two prospective cohort studies in the UK and Thai samples. In addition, the Blunted Reactivity Hypothesis, which posits that cardiovascular reactivity is inversely related to symptoms of anxiety and depression, was examined in cross-sectional analyses. A systematic review with meta-analysis and meta-regression with 41 prospective cohort studies (from 1950 to 2012) examined whether cardiovascular responses to psychological stress tests predict future BP levels, hypertension status, preclinical coronary heart disease (CHD) and cardiac events. Three possible moderators were included in analyses: type of task (active versus passive coping), age group (children versus adults), and duration of follow-up (short versus long-term follow-up). The review found that systolic BP reactions to psychological stress tests predict future systolic BP levels and that there was better prediction in child samples with shorter follow-up periods. Similarly, diastolic BP reactions to psychological stress predicted future diastolic BP levels. Cardiovascular reactions to psychological stress tests did not predict hypertension, preclinical CHD, or cardiac events. Cross-sectional analysis of two studies conducted in the UK and Thailand provided some evidence that anxiety and depressive symptoms were negatively associated with cardiovascular reactivity: these findings supported the Blunted Cardiovascular Hypothesis. However, these relationships were observed in the UK sample, but not in the Thai sample. Further, Thai participants responded to psychological stress task with large cardiovascular reactions, of a similar magnitude to the UK participants and observed in previous studies of Europeans and North Americans. Finally, prospective analyses revealed that systolic BP responses to mental arithmetic predict future systolic BP levels after one year of follow-up in both UK and Thai individuals, after controlling for baseline cardiovascular activity and traditional risk factors. In contrast, haemodynamic responses did not predict future BP. These results provide support for the “Reactivity Hypothesis” although the effect sizes were relatively small. However, responses to only one of the three stressors, mental arithmetic, predicted future BP implicating beta-adrenergically mediated cardiovascular responses. However, there was no physiologic evidence (i.e., cardiac output responses) that suggested beta-adrenergic mechanisms. Accordingly, future studies should examine alternate mechanisms (e.g., platelet aggregation and endothelial function) and cardiovascular responses in larger samples with a longer follow-up to further clarify the predictive value of reactivity in the development of hypertension, along with potential mechanisms.

The implementation of in situ autonomous observatories for biogeochemical studies in the open ocean water column and in deep-sea chemosynthetic environments is crucial for the understanding of these ecosystems. We focussed this study on silicate and sulphide, two key compounds of the marine food chain. A voltammetric method for sulphide measurements on silver electrode is presented, and a new method for quantitative determination based on the solubility difference between silver chloride and silver sulphide is proposed. A completely reagentless method for silicate measurements is developed using molybdate and protons produced during molybdenum oxidation. These analytical developments allowed us to validate a submersible potentiostat, first step toward a new sensor for in situ measurements. A Drake Passage water masses analysis is also performed using data collected during the Drake ANTIII/3 oceanographic cruise in 2006

Résumé :
The diploma thesis investigates the subjective perception of time, especially the exactness of the interval length estimation, subjective passage of time, in relation to the time perspective, the level of difficulty in emotion regulation and age. Furthermore, the thesis investigates differences in retrospective and prospective paradigm in interval length estimate. Research was conducted online, with a total number of 180 respondents. Data collection had occurred during a 4 month period. Main instruments were the Czech versions of the ZTPI - Zimbardo's time perspective inventory and the DERS-SF-CZ - Difficulty in emotion regulation scale; moreover, for the declaration of subjective passage of time was employed a method of verbal estimation. Subjective interval length was registered after finishing rewriting of two short texts. The results have showed statistically significant relationships between subjective passage of time and age; between the level of difficulty in emotion regulation and subjective passage of time. Amongst the persons orientated onto positive and negative past, there was found a significant relationship between the subjective passage of time and the difficulty in emotion regulation. Results have also shown that the interval length is overestimated in both, prospective and...

Résumé :
With the passage of CoP21, the world is leaving a relatively inactive stage and entering a second stage characterized by broad-based efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A third stage of reductions will almost certainly be required. This should chart a feasible path to a stabilized climate and put in place the necessary policy architecture for following that path, marking a global tipping point where effective climate change mitigation is no longer a goal but an accepted fact, with broad implications for behaviour and decision-making, not least a massive reduction in the resources allocated to prospecting for new fossil fuel reserves. A clear proximate operational challenge for achieving this tipping point involves effective implementation of country Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) with attendant information needs. Looking further ahead, four key research frontiers are presented, focused on achieving this tipping point and entering the third stage of emissions reductions.

Résumé :
This chapter reconstructs the eventually fruitless efforts by which the Italian government of Alcide De Gasperi and Italian Americans pursued changes to the U.S. legislation that would have let a larger number of Italian immigrants move to the United States in the early 1950s. It focuses specifically on the exploitation of the anti-communist climate of the Cold War during the Truman administration in a campaign to prevent the passing of the 1952 McCarran-Walter Act, a measure that reaffirmed the national origins system discriminating against prospective Italian newcomers. The essay concludes that this operation ultimately failed because Washington allowed exceptions to its restrictive immigration laws almost exclusively for expatriates from countries under Communist rule, which was not the case of Italy.

Résumé :
Metformin has been proven to be one of the most safe and effective antihyperglycemic agent. Jean Sterne in 1957 first used metformin for treatment of diabetes mellitus type II. The main effect of this drug from the biguanide family is to acutely decrease hepatic glucose production, mostly through a mild and transient inhibition of the mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I. The drug is an insulin sensitizer, leading to reduction in insulin resistance and significant plasma fasting insulin levels. Additionally, the resulting decrease in hepatic energy status activates AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase), a cellular metabolic sensor, having action on hepatic gluconeogenesis. It depicted marvelous non-glycemic related effects. The drug because of positive charge, can only partially cross the plasma membrane by passive diffusion. Its intracellular pathways are mediated by different isomers of organic cation transporters (OCT 1 for liver tissues and OCT 2 in the kidneys). These effects include modulation of different points of cancer timeline, weight reduction, cardiovascular health, thyroid diseases, polycystic ovaries disease and many other medical conditions. The aim of this review is to familiarize the effects of metformin in non-diabetes related medical disorders, advances in our understanding of this drug and its pathways in health and diseases.

Résumé :
Technological innovation is increasingly penetrating the world, and its implementation has the potential to bring a change in the learning organization and pedagogical approach; therefore, it is vital to understand where technology can alleviate problems and not be a hindrance or a gadget. Change factors in the knowledge dynamic today are on the one hand the passage from individual knowledge to global knowledge, with multi-user connections, but without losing the subjective prospective, and on the other hand, the passage from a received multimediality (such as television and cinema) to an interactive multimediality (such as videogames or virtual reality), to a built multimediality (such as socialnetworking knowledge management tool), up to a reflective multimediality (dynamic, intelligent, and semantic UI). This chapter has the purpose to describe possible benefits or risks, barriers or precautions, using effective technologies in education, resulting from the long history of aware applications.

Résumé :
“Before the Gold Rush” recounts British efforts to find new sources of gold in order to enable the smooth functioning of the newly restored gold standard after 1820. Their first port of call was Latin America, where mining had declined during Napoleon’s occupation of Iberia; despite substantial investment by British speculators, this sector never regained its prior prominence as a world leader in gold yields. Instead Russia picked up that baton, yielding nearly half of the world’s total output by the early 1840s. Although Britons welcomed the new gold, they did so warily, owing to that country’s status as their leading national rival. Such concerns prompted them to hedge their bets by prospecting for gold (without much success) in Africa, India, and Southeast Asia—parts of the world that were all conveniently in the process of passing under direct British rule.

Résumé :
This section lays out the introductory groundwork for the core thesis, arguing that religion provided a critical and often-desired influence that accelerated and shaped the growth of the Old Northwest. After clarifying the geographic scope, the chapter offers a general overview of the region’s antebellum settlement patterns, including the passage of the Northwest Ordinance, logistical challenges to migration and settlement, and the region’s social, ethnic, and racial demographics. Spurred by the fervor of the Second Great Awakening, the chapter demonstrates how religion fluidly entered the region through the retained religious devotion of prospective settlers. Protestant and Catholic laity, evangelizing ministers, and carefully coordinated companies of Quakers, European immigrants, and utopian faiths looked to the Old Northwest as a promising place to nurture and grow their spiritual communities.

Résumé :
A Controller Area Network (CAN) is a serial network information technology that facilitates the passing of information between Electronic Control Units (ECUs, also known as nodes). Developed by BOSCH in 1986 to circumvent challenges in harness-connected systems and provide improved message handling in automobiles, the CAN interface allows broadcast communication between all connected ECUs within a vehicle’s integrated electronic system through distributed control and decentralized measuring equipment. Since the early uses of CAN in car engine management, improvements in bitrate, bandwidth, and standardization protocols (such as ISO 11898 and SAE J1939) have led to CAN utilization in various industry applications, such as factory automation, aviation, off-highway vehicles, and telematics. Alternative wired and wireless technologies have been used to connect and network with CAN-BUS (such as Ethernet, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, ZigBee, etc.), further expanding the diversity of applications in which the serial network is employed. In this chapter, the past, present, and prospective future developments of CAN technology, with focused attention on applications in the agricultural and off-road sectors are broadly examined. CAN technology fundamentals, standards creation, modern day uses, and potential functionalities and challenges specific to CAN in the wake of precision agriculture and smart farming are discussed in detail.

Résumé :
According to the culture of the Indian Subcontinent, everything shining above (in the sky) throws its reflection below (upon the earth). The present study will deal with the frightful Saturn, the planet (graha) which is the embodiment of time (kāla). As stated by classic astronomy and astrology (jyotiṣa), its orbit is the most external; this makes it the slowest among the planets and thus the archetype of time, passing inexorably. Astronomical and mythological aspects of this figure will be outlined through exegeses of the main textual sources and analyses of oral popular beliefs. The paper will investigate its special relation with a particular mineral, the iron and a precious stone, the blue sapphire; both elements are very relevant in different functions of Saturn. From the religious prospective, this planet is a powerful deity related to many aspects of Indian life. Saturn is feared and worshiped at the same time. Different places of the sacred geography of India are devoted to rituals whose final aim is to pacify this deity, to cast away his implacable glance and to ensure his benevolence upon many kinds of sentient beings. Specific texts (śāstra, saṃhitā, paddhati) describe the elements constituting the paraphernalia and settle the rules and timing of the rituals. Some aspects of this same figure in countries connected to Indian traditions will be mentioned at the end of the present paper.

Résumé :
Many researchers have been using passive seismic in several oil and gas industry applications due to its low cost, simple and quick deployment. This paper aims to demonstrate the applicability of the passive seismic analyses for hydrocarbon prospecting. This paper presents a case study of anomaly spectral density (ASD) in the North Sumatra Basin (NSB) Indonesia. A portable seismometer was deployed to 47 locations in the (NSB) areas for collecting the noise data. At each survey location, noise measurement was carried out for at least 40 minutes at a sampling frequency of 100 Hz. Then, the power spectrum of a time series analysis was carried out to describe the distribution of power into frequency components composing that signal, from which the anomaly spectral density is justified. Results are as follow: a) spectral calculated from the collected data over the measured fields are presented; b) spectral deduced from the acquired data of all measured locations suggests very weak to weak spectral anomaly of 1-6Hz, which suggests no oil field prospects in the study site; and c) microtremor attributes were mapped and compared with gravity anomaly and geological maps of the investigated site. A reasonable outcome is suggested by comparing the result of the anomaly spectral density map of the present study to the geological map of the investigated site. In conclusion, the passive seismic data analysis is a promising tool for optimizing well placement during exploration, appraisal, and development as no artificial seismic excitation sources are required.

Résumé :
The development of non-destructive methods to inspect nuclear-waste containers is important for radioactive-waste management and non-proliferation purposes. This paper will present studies and results carried out by a method based on photon interrogation (photofission) which allows the determination of the actinide quantity contained in the waste. High-energy photons (produced by an electron accelerator associated with a Bremsstrahlung tungsten target) will induce photofission reactions on the actinides. Then the flux of delayed neutrons, which is directly proportional to the amount of actinides, is measured with 3He detectors. Since the beginning of 1990’s, our team in CEA has been working on the development of this method and the improvement of the existing simulation code. The two main tools will be introduced: OPERA (tool for the simulation of photonuclear reactions) which includes photonuclear cross sections in a Monte-Carlo code based on MCNP4C, and SAPHIR (Irradiation and Photon-Activation System), a device allowing experimentations for research and development programs. The applications of these tools will be illustrated mainly with two examples: 1) The feasibility study of an inspection device for old concrete containers will be reported. Two campaigns of measurements have been performed in order to determine the sensitivity and the detection limits in the case of four different types of concrete containers, in terms of nature and geometry. 2) Nuclear-waste producers and managers have been interested by the active photon interrogation possibilities to measure actinide quantity in wastes of high activity, vitrified or compacted, with constraints like a dose rate around 400 Gy/h at 27 cm from the container. The simulation-code improvement has allowed some calculations, based on the SAPHIR facility, which have shown a good linearity between the actinide mass and the number of detected neutrons, in spite of a very high passive noise and the presence of a lead protection. Several R&D programs will be also presented. On one hand, measurements are performed on real wastes, chosen for parameter which could define a limitation of the measurements, in order to improve the method and to evaluate the detection limits. For instance, tomography can be performed with this experimental device: quantity and position of actinides in the waste can be calculated. On the other hand, a new method is studied, using the delayed-gamma flux in order to quantify and to identify the different actinide isotopes contained in the waste. These methods and device offer a large panel of results in terms of measurements and simulations. Our team is now involved in several prospecting and R&D programs in order to improve the current method and to find some new applications for nuclear-waste management.

Résumé :
The focus of this paper addresses themes of neoliberalism, university commercialization and marketing, architecture school identity formation as a representational practice through social media, and the role of image curation and its production in contemporary architecture. This paper emerged after hearing the phrase ‘buyer’s motive,’ which explained what schools needed to consider for attracting students to their programs at a conference by Ruffalo Noel Levtiz on recruitment, marketing, and retention in higher education in the United States. The use of the word, ‘buyer’, instead of ‘student’, or ‘prospective student’, or ‘learner’ seemingly transformed the production of engaged education to its passive consumption.

Résumé :
During the space missions, the problems related to the thermal conditioning of devices, to the personnel comfort and to the thermo-mechanical stresses are known and important. Furthermore for a space mission certain priorities are stressed, such as the small dimension and the lightness of thermal equipments. Due to the presence of high temperature gradients, which straightforwardly implies significant heating/cooling powers, these characteristics are sometimes difficult to obtain. The decreasing of the satellites payloads in terms of mass and volume has brought to the necessity of a further development of traditional space technologies, such as heat pipes and radiators. A promising technology is the fabrication of micro-heat-sinks for active and passive thermal control systems suitable for the space environment, which is always an important workshop for future progresses. In fact, miniaturized heat sinks will have a terrestrial large industrial diffusion for electronic component cooling, in propulsion and in the power production for satellites, spacecrafts and airplanes, in various biomedical applications and in cloth conditioning in harsh environmental conditions. The present paper intends to introduce the reader to the standard space requirements, to present some new prospective and experiments to present some new prospective and experimental results and to discuss the use of thermal MEMS for micro- and nano-satellites.
