Résumé :
An experimental program under cyclic load is performed on two half-scale interior moment end-plate connections to concrete filled tubular (CFT) columns. Flat and curved stiffened extended end-plates were welded to the steel beams in the shop, and bolted on the site to the square and circular CFT column tubes respectively, using steel rods passing through the column. The experimental results demonstrated that both circular and rectangular end-plate connections showed similar performance in a ductile manner and the stiffener elements were effective to form the plastic hinges away from the welding zone, also the proposed curved end-plate connection with rods passing through the column in “X” shape was effective. The test specimens showed a plastic rotations capacity of 0.054 radian.

Résumé :
Neural algorithms require massive computation and very high communication bandwidth and are naturally expressed at a level of granularity finer than parallel systems can exploit efficiently. Mapping Neural Networks onto parallel computers has traditionally implied a form of clustering neurons and weights to increase the granularity. SIMD simulations may exceed a million connections per second using thousands of processors, but are often tailored to particular networks and learning algorithms. MIMD simulations required an even larger granularity to run efficiently and often trade flexibility for speed. An alternative technique based on pipelining fewer but larger messages through parallel. “broadcast/accumulate trees” is explored. “Lazy” allocation of messages reduces communication and memory requirements, curbing excess parallelism at run time. The mapping is flexible to changes in network architecture and learning algorithm and is suited for a variety of computer configurations. The method pushes the limits of parallelizing backpropagation and feed-forward type algorithms. Results exceed a million connections per second already on 30 processors and are up to ten times superior to previous results on similar hardware. The implementation techniques can also be applied in conjunction with others, including systolic and VLSI.

Recent studies show that a through beam connections composed of concrete filled square steel tubular column and steel beam have been identified as an ideal rigid connection. In this paper a 3-D nonlinear finite element models were conducted for CFSST column and steel beam connection under monotonic load using ABAQUS software. Each model includes a CFSST column and single steel beam passing through the column. The main scopes are to identify the modes of beam failure and joint shear failure. In addition the effect of an extra shear plate welded to beam web inside the column was investigated. This result can be used for designing of through beam connection.

Résumé :
Enhancing message propagation is critical for solving the problem of node classification in sparse graph with few labels. The recently popularized Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) lacks the ability to propagate messages effectively to distant nodes because of over-smoothing. Besides, the GCN with numerous trainable parameters suffers from overfitting when the labeled nodes are scarce. This article addresses the problem via building GCN on Enhanced Message-Passing Graph (EMPG). The key idea is that node classification can benefit from various variants of the input graph that can propagate messages more efficiently, based on the assumption that the structure of each variant is reasonable when more unlabeled nodes are labeled properly. Specifically, the proposed method first maps the nodes to a latent space through graph embedding that captures the structural information of the input graph. Considering the node attributes together, the proposed method constructs the EMPG by adding connections between the nodes in close proximity in the latent space. With the help of the added connections, the EMPG allows a node to propagate its message to the right nodes at long distances, so that the GCN built on the EMPG need not stack multiple layers. As a result, over-smoothing is avoided. However, dense connections may cause message propagation saturation and lead to overfitting. Seeing the EMPG as an accumulation of some potential variants of the original graph, the proposed method utilizes dropout to extract a group of variants from the EMPG and then builds multichannel GCNs on them. The multichannel features learned from different dropout EMPGs are aggregated to compute the final prediction jointly. The proposed method is flexible, as a brod range of GCNs can be incorporated easily. Additionally, it is efficient and robust. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method yields improvements in node classification.

This article explores how mundane objects are passed on through kinship networks and how these practices become part of the ‘doing’ of family and kinship. Using Mason’s concept of affinities, I illuminate four strands of material affinities, each of which illustrates how passed on objects can reproduce, imagine and memorialise kin connections both biological and social, and in and through time. Crucially, I argue that it is everyday objects in use which reveal how materiality and kinship are woven together. By starting from the object rather than the subject material affinities are brought to life, illustrating how materials are inscribed with kinship both physically and imaginatively, but in turn inscribe kinship practices, operating as central characters in family narratives. The article stems from research exploring everyday contemporary thrift and involved one-to-one interviews and a Mass Observation Directive on the subject of ‘Being thrifty’.

Résumé :
The validation and accuracy of internet protocol version 6 (IPv6) performance using jumbo frames is still not perfect, due to peer-to-peer connections testing within the same operating system and between operating systems. Therefore, inaccurate data test results. To mitigated, testing with a wider platform is recommended, a medium-scale network connection is proposed such as metropolitan area networks. In this works, a connection between computer devices connected by three proxy routers are made, with different IPv6 segments on each port. Then each computer device sends traffic data to each other using a traffic-generator application. The first test through three routers without tunnel connection is carried out as the first scenario to compare performance with tunnel-based testing. Three parameters have been used in this test, such as maximum transfer unit (MTU) 1500 bytes, MTU 400 bytes and MTU 9000 bytes. The results of the tests conducted show that the use of jumbo frames using a proxy is less effective, even though it produces a larger throughput when using the MTU 4000, but there is fragmentation in the packet passing through the proxy because the packet passing through the proxy is split into 1500 byte sizes.

Résumé :
This paper presents a new-type of fabricated beam-column connections with end plates. The joint details are as follows: the concrete beams are connected to column by end plates and six high strength long bolts passing through the core area. In addition, in order to increase the stiffness and shear strength, stirrups are replaced by the steel plate hoop in the core zone. To examine the fail behavior of the fabricated beam-column connection specimens, a quasi-static test is conducted for nine full-scale models to obtain the hysteresis curves, skeleton curves, ductility, energy dissipation capacity, and other seismic indicators. The experimental results show that all specimens failed in bending in a malleable way with a beam plastic hinge and the hysteresis curves are excellently plump for the end plate connections. From the seismic indexes, the fabricated connection specimens exhibit better seismic performance, which can provide reference for the application of prefabricated frame structure in the earthquake area.

Résumé :
Abstract Determining the connectivity of team members in sport provides important information on team functioning. In soccer, teams that are highly connected via passing have been shown to be more successful compared to teams less connected via passing. In addition to passing connectivity, players are connected with each other via intra-team communication (ITC) through verbal instruction, and nonverbal cues. Despite ITC being a known component of effective teamwork to enhance strategy, efficiency, motivation and concentration, ITC of individual playing positions has not previously been measured during soccer games, nor has it been associated with passing connections in a performance context. In this study, the received ITC that was perceived to be beneficial to performance during 22 competitive professional soccer matches was measured, in conjunction with the passing connections between team members. In total, 526 ITC ratings were collected and analysed, and a total of 7,693 passes were analysed. From the ITC and passing measures, a player connectivity index (PCI) representing the coupling of ITC and passing, was developed to determine the overall connectivity of the individual playing positions. Social network analysis (SNA) centrality metrics were used to determine the connectivity of the playing positions. There were significant (p < .05) main effects between playing positions for beneficial ITC, passing, and the PCI for centrality metrics, indicating that different playing positions interact with other team members differently. Pairwise comparisons indicated significant differences between individual playing positions for ITC, passing and the PCI. The two central defenders and the two central defensive midfielders had the highest mean values for ITC, passing, and the PCI compared to the other playing positions. The current findings suggest that central defenders and central defensive midfielders are positioned tactically to be highly involved in the build-up of passing moves, and to deliver beneficial task related information to team members. These findings have implications for performance analysis, coaches, and for talent identification.

Résumé :
On-board TCP (obTCP) has been shown to address the dual wireless link related issues in network mobility (NEMO) effectively. obTCP uses agents at both base station (BS) and mobile router (MR). The agents store incoming TCP packet in a buffer for future possible retransmissions over the wireless links. Since the number of TCP connections passing through the MR could be very large, the amount of memory space required for the buffers may become very high. This may put the deployment of obTCP in question. So, in this paper, the authors investigate the buffer requirement problem of obTCP at MR for each TCP connection. For this purpose, they describe a Markov model to keep track of the packet transmission process of MR. The buffer size for each TCP connection is represented as a function of loss probability of the wireless links. Interestingly, from the numerical results, the authors find that the buffer size requirement at MR is significantly low for each TCP connections. This observation claims possible implementation of obTCP in NEMO.

The studied connections are composed of concrete filled steel tubes (CFT) connected to composite beams by passing through bolts, endplates and steel deck, which also contributes to support the applied loads. The parametric analysis presented in this work is based on numerical simulations performed with software TNO Diana, using experimental results to calibrate the reference numerical model. The influence of three main parameters, being them the bolts diameter, the slab height and the beams cross section, was evaluated. According to the obtained bending moment versus rotation curves, it was concluded that, among the three parameters analyzed, the most important one was the bolts diameter. About the beams cross section, inconclusive results were achieved, probably due to the incompatibility between the 16 mm bolts and the robust beam cross sections considered in the parametric analysis.

In this paper we continue our studies, initiated in Refs. 2–4, of the connections between the classes of infinitely divisible probability measures in classical and in free probability. We show that the free cumulant transform of any freely infinitely divisible probability measure equals the classical cumulant transform of a certain classically infinitely divisible probability measure, and we give several characterizations of the latter measure, including an interpretation in terms of stochastic integration. We find, furthermore, an alternative definition of the Bercovici–Pata bijection, which passes directly from the classical to the free cumulant transform, without passing through the Lévy–Khintchine representations (classical and free, respectively).

Résumé :
This research investigates the effect of unbalanced moment directions on the behaviour of edge column slab connections using a finite element analysis. The analyses were done on subassembly edge column slab connections that were designed according to Indonesian Concrete Standard (SNI 2847:2013). Three unbalanced moment directions were considered namely perpendicular, parallel and inclined 45° to the slab free edge. The concrete damage plasticity (CDP) and truss elements in Abaqus were utilized to model and analyse the behaviour of concrete and reinforcement bars, respectively. The modelling techniques were first validated using an experimental result available in the literature. There are five parameters in the CDP model need to be validated to get convergent results with the experimental data. Using the CDP validated parameters, then seven specimen models were analysed under combined shear force and an unbalanced moment in three directions. The ratio of M/V was kept constant of 0.3. The results show that the punching failure capacity of connections having an unbalanced moment inclined 45° is smaller than that of an unbalanced moment perpendicular to the slab free edge, but higher than that of an unbalanced moment parallel to the slab free edge. The patterns of concrete strain are consistent with the moment directions. All tension rebars passing through column sections yield at the connection failures.

Résumé :
Pipes in power plants generally subjected to high pressures and temperatures. These are connected by elbow, T-joints to get the continuity between different stages. Due to excessive joints the outlet velocity and pressure will drops by considerable amount. Stresses will be produced due to high pressure and temperature of fluid flow, which in turn creates the failure of the pipes. The turbulence of the fluid passing through the pipes will also plays a vital role to decide the outlet pressure and velocity. In this present study pipes are connected by the elbow joint are considered and observed the effect of pipe thickness, turbulence intensity and length of elbow on outlet pressure, velocity, von mises stress and turbulence kinetic energy. It results that with increase in pipe thickness and length of elbow, the velocity, von mises stress and turbulence kinetic energy are decreases but with increase in turbulence intensity, the velocity and turbulence kinetic energy are increases.

Résumé :
Due to its geographical situation, the port of Ploče has become a junction of land and sea routes within the Transport Corridor Vc, as a part of the Mediterranean Transport Corridor, passing through Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Hungary. The paper deals with the analysis of the connecting roads leading from the port of Ploče as well as with the evaluation of the respective road traffic volume. Although the congestion on certain road sections is related to the tourist transit traffic, the road traffic volume at the Transport Corridor Vc within Bosnia and Herzegovina indicates the need for the construction of a motorway to stretch out the Corridor. The planned modernisation will fundamentally improve the main road infrastructure on the Transport Corridor Vc that will facilitate the transport of goods and enable shorter travel time from the port of Ploče to the hinterland. Considering that the major portion of the freight transport from the port of Ploče uses road transport services, the envisaged modernisation will significantly increase competitiveness of the port, mostly due to the intermodal transport mode.

OBJECTIVEThe orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is understood to have a role in outcome evaluation and risk assessment and is commonly involved with infiltrative tumors. A detailed understanding of the exact location and nature of associated white matter tracts could significantly improve postoperative morbidity related to declining capacity. Through diffusion tensor imaging–based fiber tracking validated by gross anatomical dissection as ground truth, the authors have characterized these connections based on relationships to other well-known structures.METHODSDiffusion imaging from the Human Connectome Project for 10 healthy adult controls was used for tractography analysis. The OFC was evaluated as a whole based on connectivity with other regions. All OFC tracts were mapped in both hemispheres, and a lateralization index was calculated with resultant tract volumes. Ten postmortem dissections were then performed using a modified Klingler technique to demonstrate the location of major tracts.RESULTSThe authors identified 3 major connections of the OFC: a bundle to the thalamus and anterior cingulate gyrus, passing inferior to the caudate and medial to the vertical fibers of the thalamic projections; a bundle to the brainstem, traveling lateral to the caudate and medial to the internal capsule; and radiations to the parietal and occipital lobes traveling with the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus.CONCLUSIONSThe OFC is an important center for processing visual, spatial, and emotional information. Subtle differences in executive functioning following surgery for frontal lobe tumors may be better understood in the context of the fiber-bundle anatomy highlighted by this study.

Résumé :
The dynamic model of the system of bodies with elastic connections substantiates the conceptual basis for evaluating the technological vibrations of the compactor roller as well as of the parameters of the vibrations transmitted from the vibration source to the remainder of the equipment components. In essence, the multi-body model with linear elastic connections consists of a body in vertical translational motion for vibrating roller with mass m1, a body with composed motion of vertical translation and rotation around the transverse axis passing through its weight center for the chassis of the car with mass m and the moment of mass inertia J and a body of mass m’ representing the traction tire-wheel system located on the opposite side of the vibrating roller. The study analyzes the stationary motion of the system of bodies that are in vibrational regime as a result of the harmonic excitation of the m mass body, with the force F(t)= m0rω2sinωt, generated by the inertial vibrator located inside the vibrating roller. The vibrator is characterized by the total unbalanced m0 mass in rotational motion at distance r from the axis of rotation and the angular velocity or circular frequency ω.

Résumé :
In nineteenth-century America, students buried their mathematics books. This practice consistently celebrated the milestone of passing through collegiate mathematics, yet it changed due to national events. This article considers the case of Bowdoin College, where students buried their books differently before and after the Civil War. Antebellum, they observed a complex “Burial of Calculus” with songs, parades, and mock prayers. Postbellum, students personified their books as a woman, placing stones marked “Anna” on the textbooks’ graves. Using archival investigations of students' pamphlets and textbooks, this paper argues that these changes resulted from the war's effects on education as well as changing attitudes toward death. Both the antebellum and postbellum rituals communicated understandings of mathematics and academic achievement, as connected through a mock funeral ritual. Through investigating these connections, this paper asserts the importance of student practices for our understanding of Civil War era education.

Résumé :
This paper provides an experimental investigation on the moment-rotation response of typical moment resisting beam-column connections, employing continuous negative bars consolidated with cast in place concrete over the precast beam and passing through grouted corrugated sleeves into an intermediate column. According to [1], the relative beam-column rotation is highly dependent on the elongation mechanism of the negative bars related to both the embedment length into the grouted sleeves and the development length over the beam end, being also inversely dependent on the vertical distance between the position of the top bars and the centre of rotation at end beam section. The flexural secant stiffness of the moment-rotation response is caused by a sum of the joint opening mechanisms at the beam-column interface and crack propagation within the connection zone, wherein the bond-slip at crack positions occurs prior to the first yielding of the negative bars. Therefore, the semi-rigid behaviour of the beam-column connections is associated with deformation mechanisms that occur at the SLS, but which also affects the global behaviour and stability analysis of precast frames at the ULS.Cruciform tests of full scale beam-column connections were carried out at the Precast Research Centre of the Federal University of Sao Carlos (Brazil), where 6 prototypes were studied varying the detailing of the positive connectors over the concrete corbel. The first pair of connectors employed elastomeric bearing pads with 2 vertical dowel bars, the second pair of connectors employed horizontal joints filled with grout with 2 vertical dowel bars and the last pair of connectors employed positive welded plates. The comparison between the experimental results showed that the smallest secant stiffness, which was obtained from the connector with elastomeric bearing pad, was corresponded to 89% and to 82% of the highest secant stiffness obtained for the connectors with welded plates and grouted joint, respectively. Therefore, the experimental results indicate that the major deformation mechanism within the beam-column connections is mostly dependent on the elongation of the top bars. Finally, a simplified analytical equation has been calibrated against the experimental results of the studied beam-column connections.

The traditional authority of Kyrgyz women operates within moral frameworks and through their roles as keepers of hearth and home, and has been recognized by the state for its important role in family life and in society. Women are responsible for the health of future generations, for the quality of children's education, and for safeguarding and passing on moral principles, which contribute to the formation of the traditional Kyrgyz family, and thus to the Kyrgyz nation. Kyrgyz ideas that women are keepers of hearth and home are exactly the ideas that allow women to build authority within the home and family. Not only do Kyrgyz women actually gain a great deal of power in their families over the course of their lives, but also this female power is foundational to the Kyrgyz sense of nation and sovereignty. Thus, what seems to be “domestic” power is, in fact, power with very public connections and effects.

Résumé :
Structural health monitoring refers to the process of making an assessment, based on nondestructive, in-situ, autonomous measurements, about the ability of a structure to perform its intended function. This paper presents work done on a bolted connection in carbon-fiber reinforced polymer composite materials. A composite specimen is bolted in a double lap joint configuration to a test apparatus that applies an increasing tensile load. Ultimately, the load results in bearing failure of the material around the bolt hole. To monitor the progression of damage, macro fiber composite sensors are bonded in a circular array around the bolt hole. These sensors are then used to generate ultrasonic guided waves, a popular technique in nondestructive evaluation because of the favorable combination of propagation distance and sensitivity to damage. As the specimen is subjected to increasing load levels, measurements are taken repeatedly and compared with one another. Because damage will change the local mechanical properties of the material, the ultrasonic waves passing through the damaged region will be scattered differently in each direction, resulting in a different waveform arriving at the other surrounding sensors. By applying appropriate signal processing techniques, these changes may be interpreted as indicating the extent of damage that has occurred in the specimen. Preliminary analysis is presented demonstrating the correlation between changes in received strain signals and increasing damage levels.

Two-phase implants must be exposed to the external environment after the period of osteointegration has elapsed. For this purpose, a healing abutment is placed passing through the mucosa while forming the emergence profile. The continuous connection and disconnection can lead to an alteration in the tissue maturation, both because of the contact of bacterial plaque and because of the mechanical trauma that involves its manipulation, manifesting with different degrees of erythema or bleeding. To assess whether this epithelium disruption can be counteracted, a blinded study design was developed on 150 unitary implant patients divided into three groups (n = 50), applying chlorhexidine (group 1), ultraviolet C (UV-C) at a wavelength of 254 nm (group 2)and no treatment as a control group (group 3), during each of the disconnections and connections during the prosthodontic treatment (1 time per week for four weeks). All groups showed a better epithelium aspect at the end of the evaluation. Although there were no statistically significant differences in the degree of inflammation, the UV-C treated group had the lowest plaque accumulation, and the highest was for the chlorhexidine-treated group.

Résumé :
Low-dose Computed Tomography (LDCT) has gained a great deal of attention in clinical procedures due to its ability to reduce the patient’s risk of exposure to the X-ray radiation. However, reducing the X-ray dose increases the quantum noise and artifacts in the acquired LDCT images. As a result, it produces visually low-quality LDCT images that adversely affect the disease diagnosing and treatment planning in clinical procedures. Deep Learning (DL) has recently become the cutting-edge technology of LDCT denoising due to its high performance and data-driven execution compared to conventional denoising approaches. Although the DL-based models perform fairly well in LDCT noise reduction, some noise components are still retained in denoised LDCT images. One reason for this noise retention is the direct transmission of feature maps through the skip connections of contraction and extraction path-based DL modes. Therefore, in this study, we propose a Generative Adversarial Network with Inception network modules (InNetGAN) as a solution for filtering the noise transmission through skip connections and preserving the texture and fine structure of LDCT images. The proposed Generator is modeled based on the U-net architecture. The skip connections in the U-net architecture are modified with three different inception network modules to filter out the noise in the feature maps passing over them. The quantitative and qualitative experimental results have shown the performance of the InNetGAN model in reducing noise and preserving the subtle structures and texture details in LDCT images compared to the other state-of-the-art denoising algorithms.

Résumé :
Coronary vasoconstriction is a component of the baroreflex response to bilateral carotid occlusion. The central pathways responsible for this reflex constriction are incompletely understood, but previous studies show that activation of parabrachial nucleus (PBN) elicits coronary vasoconstriction and that PBN shares prominent anatomic connections with other central baroreflex centers, including the nucleus of the tractus solitarius. Therefore, we examined whether PBN plays a role in baroreflex mediated coronary constriction and whether cell bodies rather than fibers passing through this region are involved. Anesthetized cats were instrumented for continuous measurements of heart rate, arterial pressure, and coronary flow velocity. Bilateral carotid occlusion following propranolol and vagotomy increased arterial pressure (63 +/- 10%) and an index of coronary vascular resistance (34 +/- 6%). Bilateral microinjections of lidocaine (1%, 400 nl) into PBN reversibly attenuated the coronary constriction (19 +/- 5%) with little effect on the change in arterial pressure. It was further demonstrated that autoregulatory responses to the increase in pressure could not fully account for the observed changes in coronary constriction. In a separate group of animals, kainic acid (50 mM, 300 nl) abolished the baroreflex increase in coronary resistance (43 +/- 1 vs. -9 +/- 9% after) without affecting the increase in arterial pressure (54 +/- 12% increase before vs. 55 +/- 20% increase after kainic acid). We conclude that PBN is a necessary component of the baroreflex pathway mediating coronary vasoconstriction. Furthermore, cell bodies in PBN, rather than simply fibers passing through that region, participate in the reflex coronary vasoconstriction.

Résumé :
Josiah Royce, the American idealist philosopher (1855-1916), is best known to readers of Borges in connection with a recursive map-within-a-map drawn upon the soil of England. Indeed, Borges ranks "el mapa de Royce" side-by-side with his beloved Zeno´´´ s paradox in “Otro poema de los dones” (336), a Whitmanesque catalog of a few of his favorite things. Borges appreciated Royce as a fellow-wanderer through the late nineteenth-century thickets of both Anglo-American idealism and the new mathematics of transfinite numbers. Royce was not so much an influence on Borges as a fellow traveler who had arrived in a somewhat similar place after passing through Berkeley, Schopenhauer, and Cantor. After cataloging connections between the two thinkers and explicating Royce's map, I will suggest that both figures are theorists of infinity and metaphysicians of the copy who offer fertile suggestions to our understanding of media in general and maps in particular. Though Royce and Borges both can strike some readers as architects of suffocating idealistic structures, there is a difference. Royce thinks his figures of infinity really do disclose the truth about the universe. Borges sees in such figures the paradoxes and slippages involved in any project of perfect duplication, and his skepticism about philosophical representation is designed, ultimately, to provide oxygen and exit from totalitarian systems. In this I would view Borges as a follower of Royce's close friend, Harvard colleague and philosophical antagonist: William James.

Résumé :
Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by focal white matter damage, and when the brain is modeled as a network, lesions can be treated as disconnection events. Objective: To evaluate whether modeling disconnection caused by lesions helps explain motor and cognitive impairment in MS. Methods: Pathways connecting 116 cortical regions were reconstructed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tractography from diffusion tensors averaged across healthy controls (HCs); maps of pathways were applied to 227 relapse-onset MS patients and 50 HCs to derive structural connectivity. Then, the likelihood of individual connections passing through lesions was used to model disconnection. Patients were grouped according to clinical phenotype (113 relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), 69 secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS), 45 benign MS), and then network metrics were compared between groups (analysis of variance (ANOVA)) and correlated with motor and cognitive scores (linear regression). Results: Global metrics differentiated RRMS from SPMS and benign MS patients, but not benign from SPMS patients. Nodal connectivity strength replicated global results. After disconnection, few nodes were significantly different between benign MS and RRMS patients. Correlations revealed nodes pertinent to motor and cognitive dysfunctions; these became slightly stronger after disconnection. Conclusion: Connectivity did not change greatly after modeled disconnection, suggesting that the brain network is robust against damage caused by MS lesions.

This article highlights proper electrical grounding when roof structures have no fixed connections to the ground. The roof’s mechanization designers, at Uni-Systems Inc. in Minneapolis, decided to study the effects of an electrical impulse through a machine-bearing surface. Uni-Systems had been confident that implementing conventional copper shunt grounding to bypass the nonconductive points would solve one problem. However, once the path was shunted, current was routed to the wheels and bearings. Testing would be required to identify the effects of a lightning strike in a greased bearing. Uni-Systems returned to Neetrac to test a new assembly, consisting of a plain spherical bearing with fibriloid liner, an axle, and spacers, installed to an eye bracket machined to house the bearing and a clevis bracket. The tests showed that with shunt wires installed, a current with up to 20,000 amperes passing through the hinge has no adverse effect—either short or long term—on the hinge bearing. Thus, the hinge bearing assembly can be used as a part of the grounding path for lightning protection.

With advances in the lateral approaches to the skull base and the increasing success of the management of jugular foramen lesions, a thorough knowledge of the anatomy of this region is needed. The purpose of the present work is to study the detailed microsurgical anatomy of the lower skull base and the jugular foramen area as seen through the lateral approaches. Forty preserved skull base specimens and 5 fresh cadavers were dissected. The shape of the jugular bulb and its relationship to nearby structures were recorded. The different venous connections of the bulb were noted. The hypoglossal canal was identified and its contents were observed. The lower cranial nerves were studied at the level of the upper neck, at their exit from the inferior skull base, and in the jugular foramen. The results of the present study showed the complex and variable anatomy of this area. The classic compartments of the jugular foramen were not always present. Cranial nerves IX through XI followed different patterns while passing through the jugular foramen, being separated from the jugular bulb by bone, thick fibrous tissue, or thin connective tissue.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTTourette syndrome (TS) is a complex neurobehavioral disorder principally characterized by motor and vocal tics. However, features of obsessive-compulsive and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders are often present. The basal ganglia and associated brain structures have been implicated in the pathophysiology of TS, as well as in these related conditions. Specifically, it is believed that the neuroanatomically and functionally defined basal ganglia thalamocortical loops are involved in TS. These loops are composed of a sequence of connections originating in the cortex and passing in series through the striatum (caudate and putamen), globus pallidus, and thalamus before returning to the cortical areas of origin. This review concentrates on the neuroimaging findings in Ts, particularly as they relate to alterations in components of the basal ganglia thalamocortical circuits. These neuroimaging data suggest that the major abnormalities in TS involve striatal or cortical dysfunction, as well as dysfunction of dopaminergic systems that regulate basas ganglia neurotransmission.

Résumé :
The work presents analysis of possible application of self-generating neural networks, which can independently generate a topological map of neuron connections while modelling biological neurogenesis, in multi-threaded information communication systems. A basic optical neural network cell is designed on the basis of the applied layered composition performing data processing. A map of neuron connections represents not an ordered structure providing a regular graph for exchange of information between neurons, but a set of cognitive reserve represented as an unconnected set of neuromorphic cells. Modelling of neuron death (apoptosis) and creation of dendrite-axon connections makes it possible to implement a stepwise neural network growth algorithm. Despite challenges in implementing this process, creating a growing network in an optical neural network framework solves the problem of initial forming of the neural network architecture, which greatly simplifies the learning process. Neural network cells used with the network growth algorithm resulted in neural network structures that use internal self-sustaining rhythmic activity to process information. This activity is a result of spontaneously formed closed neural circuits with common neurons among neuronal cells. Such organisation of recirculation memory leads to solutions with reference to such intra-network activity. As a result, response of the network is determined not only by stimuli, but also by the internal state of the network and its rhythmic activity. Network functioning is affected by internal rhythms, which depend on the information passing through the neuron clusters, which results in formation of a specific rhythmic memory. This can be used for tasks that require solutions to be worked out based on certain parameters, but they shall be unreproducible when the network is repeatedly stimulated by the same influences. Such tasks include ensuring information transmission security when using some set of carriers. The task of determining a number of frequencies and their frequency plan depends on external factors. To exclude possible repeating generation of the same carrier allocation, it is necessary to use networks of the configuration under consideration that can influence generation of solutions through the gathered experience.

Résumé :
To increase the efficiency of the use of a sucker rod pumping unit (SRPU) today the columns of sucker rods of fiberglass and carbon fiber are used. Such polymer composites have a number of advantages over steel, but they have a significant drawback in the design of a sucker rod - a high concentration of stresses at the point where theyare connected to a steel head containing a thread. Many constructive solutions to this problem have been developed, but maintaining the connection of a fiberglass or carbon-plastic barrel with a metal head remains quite a challenge. As practice shows, the bending of the pump rods in the well are also subjected to bending loads, torque, friction to the column of tubing (tubing) and the like. Therefore, a comparative analysis of the parts of the pump rod structures: traditional steel and combined (metal tip with composite rod) should be carried out. In this work, such joints were subjected only to bending loads, which are particularly dangerous when passing through a rod of bent sections of a well and when running down the bar. It is established that at the time of bending the maximum normal stresses are distributed along the length of the pump rod unevenly and are concentrated in the transition between the head and the rod. The maximum normal stresses occurring in the transition between the steel tip and the carbon-plastic core, which are jointed without structural features (galtels, different transitions, etc.), have been determined to be greater than 1600 MPa. Such value of stress is undesirable when cycling the connection in well. For example, the design of a metal head was proposed, which allows reducing the stresses arising from bending and distribute them on the connection more evenly, compared to the traditional sucker rod.

Abstract Fiction has often shown that our sense of time can be affected by the spaces and things around us. In particular, the houses in which characters live can make the passing of time dilate, accelerate, even to seem to skip or stop. These interactions between place and time may represent more than metaphor or literary artifice, but rather genuine cognitive processes of embodied subjective time. This is demonstrated in an analysis of Lisa Gorton’s The Life of Houses, supplementing traditional stylistic analysis with cognitive poetics to explore an influence of the central house, the Sea House, on the young protagonist’s experience of time. Exploring the text through the fictional mental functioning of a main character offers a new way to understand The Life of Houses, and, more broadly, the cognitive approach set out in this article—one which takes into account various active and interactive influences on subjective time—may have implications for the interpretation of other works which analyse the connections between time, place, and self.

These connections show arts-informed research affords lifelong learning opportunities apart from academic practice; in this case, arts-informed research is a resource tool for navigating lived experiences of grief and grief writing. The Southern Atlantic city of Buenos Aires emerged a critical hub of radical political activism between 1916 and 1930 at a time when the influence of anarchist activists waned and organized labor often worked with the Radical Civic Union presidents. Whether based in or passing through this city, activists and exiles, partisans, and pretenders pursued various strategies to achieve revolutionary change, raise funds for causes, assure sovereignty, control the public narrative, and network with like-minded individuals and groups. These agitators created webs of associations throughout the Atlantic world in the process. These networks were vital in fashioning enduring transnational connections, strategies of resistance, shared discourses, and symbolic registers that framed how nationalist and anti-imperial interactions were understood. This article focuses on Irish republicans, Catalan nationalists, and Arab anti-colonialists and their interactions with Argentine agitators, sympathizers, and various state actors to more fully understand the importance of Buenos Aires in this period and the consequences on sociopolitical life in this Atlantic port city up to the global depression of 1930.

Résumé :
For a space, we investigate its CJL (cohomology jump loci), sitting inside varieties of representations of the fundamental group. To do this, for a CDG (commutative differential graded) algebra, we define its CJL, sitting inside varieties of flat connections. The analytic germs at the origin 1 of representation varieties are shown to be determined by the Sullivan 1-minimal model of the space. Up to a degree q, the two types of CJL have the same analytic germs at the origins, when the space and the algebra have the same q-minimal model. We apply this general approach to formal spaces (obtaining the degeneration of the Farber–Novikov spectral sequence), quasi-projective manifolds, and finitely generated nilpotent groups. When the CDG algebra has positive weights, we elucidate some of the structure of (rank one complex) topological and algebraic CJL: all their irreducible components passing through the origin are connected affine subtori, respectively rational linear subspaces. Furthermore, the global exponential map sends all algebraic CJL into their topological counterpart.

Résumé :
The traditional connections and reinforcement details of precast RC frames are complex and cause difficulty in construction. Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) exhibits outstanding compressive strength and bond strength with rebars and strands; thus, the usage of UHPC in the joint core area will reduce the amount of transverse reinforcement and shorten the anchoring length of beam rebars as well as strands significantly. Moreover, the lap splice connections of precast columns can be placed in the UHPC joint zone and the construction process will be simplified. This paper presented a novel joint consisting of a precast pretensioned prestressed concrete beam, an ordinary precast reinforced concrete (RC) column, and a UHPC joint zone. To study the seismic performance of the proposed joints, six novel interior joints and one monolithic RC joint were tested under low-cyclic loads. Variables such as the axial force, the compressive strength of UHPC, the stirrup ratio were considered in the tests. The test results indicate that the proposed joints exhibit comparable seismic performance of the monolithic RC joint. An anchorage length of 40 times the strands-diameter and a lap splice length of 16 times the rebar-diameter are adequate for prestressed strands and precast column rebars, respectively. A minimum column depth is suggested as 13 times the diameter of the beam-top continuous rebars passing through the joint. In addition, a nine-time rebar diameter is sufficient for the anchorage of beam bottom rebars. The shear strength of UHPC in the joint core area is suggested as 0.8 times the square root of the UHPC compressive strength.

Résumé :
During development of tubular networks such as the mammalian vascular system, the kidney and the Drosophila tracheal system, epithelial tubes must fuse to each other to form a continuous network. Little is known of the cellular mechanisms or molecular control of epithelial tube fusion. We describe the cellular dynamics of a tracheal fusion event in Drosophila and identify a gene regulatory hierarchy that controls this extraordinary process. A tracheal cell located at the developing fusion point expresses a sequence of specific markers as it grows out and contacts a similar cell from another tube; the two cells adhere and form an intercellular junction, and they become doughnut-shaped cells with the lumen passing through them. The early fusion marker Fusion-1 is identified as the escargot gene. It lies near the top of the regulatory hierarchy, activating the expression of later fusion markers and repressing genes that promote branching. Ectopic expression of escargot activates the fusion process and suppresses branching throughout the tracheal system, leading to ectopic tracheal connections that resemble certain arteriovenous malformations in humans. This establishes a simple genetic system to study fusion of epithelial tubes.

Résumé :
During mammalian evolution, the Myodural Bridges (MDB) have been shown to be highly conserved anatomical structures. However, the putative physiological function of these structures remains unclear. The MDB functionally connects the suboccipital musculature to the cervical spinal dura mater, while passing through the posterior atlanto-occipital and atlanto-axial interspaces. MDB transmits the tensile forces generated by the suboccipital muscles to the cervical dura mater. Moreover, head movements have been shown to be an important contributor to human CSF circulation. In the present study, a 16-week administration of a Myostatin-specific inhibitor, ACE-031, was injected into the suboccipital musculature of rats to establish an experimental animal model of hyperplasia of the suboccipital musculature. Using an optic fiber pressure measurement instrument, the present authors observed a significant increase in intracranial pressure (ICP) while utilizing the hyperplasia model. In contrast, surgically severing the MDB connections resulted in a significant decrease in intracranial pressure. Thus, these results indicated that muscular activation of the MDB may affect CSF circulation, suggesting a potential functional role of the MDB, and providing a new research perspective on CSF dynamics.

Résumé :
The Arctic region has received increasing attention in recent years. One of the topical areas of transport system development in the Russian Federation is the transit potential of the Arctic region as well as transport connections with the Barents region countries. The purpose of the research is to make a transport and economic research of variants of automobile transport network development in the Barents region - the transport route Arkhangelsk - Naryan-Mar. The research objectives are: to analyse regional transport network of Nenets Autonomous District; to develop versions of Arkhangelsk - Naryan-Mar transport routes; to estimate transport and economic characteristics and choose a variant of motor transport route. Two variants of the Arkhangelsk - Naryan-Mar road route have been considered in the course of this work. The first one is 887 kilometres long and goes along the sparsely populated territory, through the village Volokovaya. The second route is 940 km long. It is situated in the north through 10 settlements, including the town of Mezen, the administrative centre of Mezen municipal district. A more feasible route is the second option, which runs along the shores of the Mezen Bay of the White Sea and the Chesh Bay of the Pechora Sea. In spite of the fact that this route is 77 km longer than Route 1, it will be a transport artery, passing through 10 settlements, among which is the town of Mezen, the administrative centre of Mezen municipal district.

Résumé :
Background The purpose of this study was to: (1) evaluate the mechanism of lymph drainage through a vascularized lymph node (VLN) flap, and (2) investigate if the number of VLNs impacts lymph transit time through the flap. Methods Twenty-seven axillary VLN flaps were elevated in 14 Sprague-Dawley rats and divided into three groups (n = 9 each) based on the number of lymph nodes present: group 1 (0-VLNs), group 2 (2-VLNs), and group 3 (4-VLNs). Indocyanine green (n = 8/group) and Alexa680-albumin (n = 1/group) were injected into the edge of flaps and the latency period between injection and fluorescence in the axillary vein was recorded. Stereomicroscopic fluorescent lymphography was performed to directly visualize lymphatic transit through VLNs. Results Fluorescence was detected in the axillary vein after 229s [47–476], 79s [15–289], and 56s [16–110] in group 1, 2, and 3, respectively (p < 0.01). There was a negative correlation between the number of VLNs in the flap and the latency period (r = -0.59; p < 0.05). Median flap weights were comparable in group 1, 2, and 3 (258 mg [196–349], 294 mg [212–407], 315 mg [204–386], respectively; p = 0.54). Stereoscopic lymphography allowed direct visualization of lymphatic fluid transit through VLNs. Conclusion Lymphatic fluid in VLN flaps drains into the venous system mainly by passing through the afferent lymphatics and lymph nodes. A secondary mechanism appears to be the diffusion of fluid into the venous system via intratissue lymphaticovenous connections created during flap elevation. Increasing the number of lymph nodes in the flap is associated with a more rapid transit of fluid.

Résumé :
The application of neural networks for the synthesis of control systems is considered. Examples of synthesis of control systems using methods of reinforcement learning, in which the state vector is involved, are given. And the synthesis of a neural controller for objects with an inaccessible state vector is discussed: 1) a variant using a neural network with recurrent feedbacks; 2) a variant using the input error vector, where each error (except for the first one) enters the input of the neural network passing through the delay element. The disadvantages of the first method include the fact that for such a structure of a neural network it is not possible to apply existing learning methods with confirmation and for training it is required to use a data set obtained, for example, from a previously calculated linear controller. The structure of the neural network used in the second option allows the application of reinforcement learning methods, but the article provides a statement and its proof that for the synthesis of a control system for objects with three or more integrators, a neural network without recurrent connections cannot be used. The application of the above structures is given on examples of the synthesis of control systems for objects 1/s2 and 1/s3 presented in a discrete form.

Résumé :
Abstract This article reviews Wang Gungwu, Home is Not Here (Singapore: National University of Singapore Press, 2018) and Gregor Benton and Hong Liu’s Dear China: Emigrant Letters and Remittances, 1820–1980 (Oakland, CA: University of California Press, 2018) in terms of how they reflect and revisit recent scholarship on China and the Chinese overseas published in English. Adopting different approaches, both books feature family correspondence within Chinese migrant families. This new focus unpacks concepts between ethnicity and language, and between family and homeland in migrants’ identity-making. Beginning from these studies, the article defends “Chinese overseas” as an intellectual concept and as a framework that allows an examination and comparison of the connections between China and its migrants as well as their descendants worldwide. In conclusion, the article argues that diasporas are made up of those who have left home but who miss that home, touching on the concept of nostalgia. Passing down the sense of nostalgia through successive generations via narrating, writing, and verifying, both in Sinophone and other languages, is a way by which Chinese diasporas construct their heritage. The process of retelling, rewriting, and reworking family heritage keeps the idea of home alive, wherever it might be, and whether or not it still exists.

Résumé :
A novel ternary polyampholyte composed of fully charged anionic monomer – 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium salt (AMPS), cationic monomer – (3-acrylamidopropyl) trimethylammonium chloride (APTAC) and the positively charged fluorescent dye – acrylamide Nile Blue (ANB) was synthesized by conventional free radical copolymerization and characterized by FTIR, UV-Vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and zeta-potential. FTIR spectrum of AMPS-APTAC-ANB shows that introduction of 1 mol.% ANB into copolymer composition does not influence the basic characteristic bands of polyampholyte. The adsorption and emission peaks of AMPS-APTAC-ANB found at max = 586 nm and max = 660-680 nm are attributed to ANB groups of terpolymer. The average hydrodynamic size and zeta potential of AMPS-APTAC-ANB in aqueous solution that are equal to 4.3 nm and = 1.6 mV indicating the globular conformation of amphoteric macromolecules with a slightly negative charge. Injection of 0.1 wt.% (or 1.310-3 molL-1) AMPS-APTAC-ANB into the core sample derived from the “Vostochnyi Moldabek” oilfield demonstrated the passing of fluorescently-labeled terpolymer through the core. The ternary polyampholyte containing the fluorescent marker can serve as oilfield tracer for monitoring well-to-well connections (or interwell tracer test).

Résumé :
The witness of the Scriptures and of virtually every human culture suggests that one of the most pivotal and thus crucial dimensions of human formation, and thus spiritual formation, is the intergenerational dynamic: older men with younger men; older women passing on the faith to younger women. One generation encouraging, blessing and transmitting wisdom to the next generation. And yet, it is often observed that this is a missing dimension of congregational life–that congregations are increasing stratified along generational lines. Thus this essay will make the case that the church is a liturgical, catechetical and missional community and that faith formation, in Christian community, will happen through the interplay of the generations in worship, teaching/learning and service. And that therefore congregations would be wise to be more attentive to how they foster intergenerational connections, rather than inadvertently or intentionally create generational divides in the church. Also, it is important to stress that a critical part of congregational life is that of equipping older men and women to be a means of grace to their younger counterparts. The essay will draw on the Biblical references to intergenerational formation, the insights of contemporary social-psychology and the observations of the author regarding contemporary congregational life.
