Purpose: The issues of increasing the efficiency of passengers’ ground service in airborne-transport logistic junctions are considered. Ground service processes are predictable from the point of transport system theory and are normalized using time-schedule theory tools. Actions or inaction in the service processes of a passenger as a process participant introduce an accidental element into transport system. Managing passenger’s initiative does not affect the predictability of the end time of ground service operations. The article proposes the description of the processes of logistic junction production activity as well as the role of passenger’s behavior in ground service. Directions for the study of passenger behavior cognitive model in the frames of air-terminal structural-flowing scheme are proposed. The paper proposes predictive analytics system in the form of telematics which collects data on passenger factual behavior in airport functional areas. As a proposal to improve junction operation efficiency it is proposed to introduce passenger behavior models for the prediction of time ending of passenger ground service processes and for - at the expense of data evaluation algorithms - constituting operation process continuation. Methods: System general theory, cognitive transport system theory. Results: The architecture of the system for data collection from transducers for passenger behavior monitoring at air terminal on the process of ground service in airborne-transport logistic junction was developed; structural-logical scheme of negative scenario occurrence, that’s negative one from the point of event regularity, is given. Practical significance: Passenger ground service process optimization of airborne transport logistic junction.

The study considered the role of passenger road transport as one of the most important sectors of the national economy, which influences the entire economy of a country and its regions, as well as the quality of life of the population.The analysis of the transport system in the city of Khujand, which is mainly dominated by road transport, has been carried out based on the results of the conducted survey on passenger flows on bus routes of the city, particularly, regarding origin-destination matrix, fare collectability.The conclusions argue in favour of practicability of conducting regular systematic monitoring of passenger flows to optimize suggestions in the field of urban public transport development. In fundamental terms, main problems of passenger transportation management were identified including lack of a regular timetable on certain routes, non-compliance with the traffic schedule, resulting in an increase in travel time, changes in routing due to the absence of sufficient number of passengers, systematic violations of traffic rules, excessively long stops at the hub stopping points, etc. The suggestions comprise approaches intended to reduce influence of organisational and managerial factors on efficiency of passenger transportation, on the correct choice of rolling stock, that should be selected considering design features, possibility of serving all segments of the population (categories of passengers), traffic intensity, manoeuvrability, compliance with road conditions, etc. Conclusions were also made regarding techniques to justify the volume of passenger transportation, to identify average distance of passenger’s trip, to calculate technical, operational, and quality indicators of operation of public transport, distribution of passengers per routes.The analysis of the structure of passenger flows since it influences the indicators of the effectiveness of passenger transportation, plays the most significant role in the framework of development of new approaches to the solution of transport issues in the city of Khujand.Implementation of full-scale monitoring of passenger flows will make it possible to develop appropriate timetables facilitating movement of passenger flows on routes, to select a rational type of rolling stock in terms of capacity, will contribute to time-saving passenger travelling, socialisation of transport tariffs, and improved quality of transportation.

Résumé :
Various methods of collecting data on passenger traffic, their advantages and disadvantages are considered. It is shown that in order to improve the quality of transport services, it is necessary to regularly collect and refine data on passenger traffic. The goals and methods of obtaining information about passenger traffic in the system of municipal passenger transport are indicated. All currently existing methods are divided into three categories: data collection using technical means, data collection with the help of censors and volunteers, and interpretation of fare payments. All the methods presented in the article were compared in terms of labor intensity, costs and accuracy of the results obtained. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are considered. The general structure of an automated system for collecting data on passenger traffic is presented. The necessity of creating a centralized system for collecting and processing data associated with all passenger transport control systems has been substantiated. The tasks solved by this system at all levels of transport services for passengers are shown. Each of the tasks is assigned to one of three service levels: pre-transport, transport and post-transport. It is shown that only solving problems at all levels can ensure high-quality operation of the municipal passenger transport system.

Light rail transit (LRT) is a sustainable transportation mode that ensures sustainable environmental, economic, and social development. Generally, the rate of public transportation usage in many parts of the world remains low compared to private vehicles. There is a need to understand passengers’ perception of public transportation service quality to enhance passenger satisfaction and increase ridership. Thus, this study used the Kuala Lumpur LRT service as a case study to investigate the effect of a passenger’s gender and age on their perception of the LRT service quality and their overall satisfaction. This survey involved 417 respondents. The outcome of factor analysis indicated that eight factors—i.e., signage, comfort, speediness, safety, ticketing service, facilities, staff service, and provision of information—influenced passenger satisfaction. The results of the Mann–Whitney U test and Kruskal–Wallis test indicated that the factors influencing passenger satisfaction significantly varied across a passenger’s gender and age. A more in-depth and comprehensive analysis using the ordered logit model and segmentation approach proved that provision of information, comfort, staff service, and facilities were critical determiners of passenger satisfaction in most segments. Safety factors and ticketing services had no impact on overall passenger satisfaction. The findings of this research could help LRT service providers, researchers, and policymakers formulate effective strategies for enhancing passenger satisfaction and increase the ridership for LRT services.

Precise estimation of passenger spatial-temporal trajectory is the basis for urban rail transit (URT) passenger flow assignment and ticket fare clearing. Inspired by the correlation between passenger tap-in/out time and train schedules, we present a method to estimate URT passenger spatial-temporal trajectory. First, we classify passengers into four types according to the number of their routes and transfers. Subsequently, based on the characteristic that passengers tap-out in batches at each station, the K-means algorithm is used to assign passengers to trains. Then, we acquire passenger access, egress, and transfer time distribution, which are used to give a probability estimation of passenger trajectories. Finally, in a multi-route case of the Beijing Subway, this method presents an estimation result with 91.2% of the passengers choosing the same route in two consecutive days, and the difference of route choice ratio in these two days is 3.8%. Our method has high accuracy and provides a new method for passenger microcosmic behavior research.

In the metro station, passengers’ psychological state can be affected by space congestion, slow walking speed, increasing queue length, and other factors, resulting in a time-lapse effect, which can be described as people feeling that they spend more time than the actual. To measure the effect, this paper develops congestion indexes for the walking and queuing areas in metro stations, and designs stated preference (SP) and revealed preference (RP) surveys and scene simulation experiments. Based on the survey and experiment data, we attempt to describe the psychological state and space–time perception of passengers in metro stations and propose quantitative models of congestion indexes at different service levels. Furthermore, on the basis of these models, thresholds of walking distance and waiting time can be calculated for different service levels. The results can provide a reference for real-time passenger flow monitoring and theoretical supports for metro operators to measure passenger flow status and adopt passenger flow management strategies under different conditions. Overall, this study offers promising insights into passenger flow monitoring and management, but some limitations need to be addressed in future work.

This article presents a study on the process of how passengers arrive at lift lobbies to travel to their destinations. Earlier studies suggest that passengers arrive at the lift lobbies individually with exponentially distributed inter-arrival times, that is, according to a Poisson process. This study was carried out in a multi-storey office building. The data was collected using a questionnaire, digital video recordings and the lift monitoring system. The results show that, in the studied building, passengers arrive in batches whose size varies with the time of day and the floor utilization. In addition, the batch arrivals follow a time-inhomogeneous Poisson process with piecewise constant arrival rates. Practical applications: This article contributes to the basic understanding of passenger behaviour, and how people move around in buildings and arrive at the lift lobbies. It is proposed that the model for the passenger arrival process should take into account that passengers do not always arrive individually but also in batches. The passenger arrival process affects the design of elevators. It will also affect the passenger generation in building traffic simulations.

Counting of passengers entering and exiting means of transport is one of the basic functionalities of passenger flow monitoring systems. Exact numbers of passengers are important in areas such as public transport surveillance, passenger flow prediction, transport planning, and transport vehicle load monitoring. To allow mass utilization of passenger flow monitoring systems, their cost must be low. As the overall price is mainly given by prices of the used sensor and processing unit, we propose the utilization of a visible spectrum camera and data processing algorithms of low time complexity to ensure a low price of the final product. To guarantee the anonymity of passengers, we suggest orthogonal scanning of a scene. As the precision of the counting is relevantly influenced by the precision of passenger recognition, we focus on the development of an appropriate recognition method. We present two opposite approaches which can be used for the passenger recognition in means of transport with and without entrance steps, or with split level flooring. The first approach is the utilization of an appropriate convolutional neural network (ConvNet), which is currently the prevailing approach in computer vision. The second approach is the utilization of histograms of oriented gradients (HOG) features in combination with a support vector machine classifier. This approach is a representative of classical methods. We study both approaches in terms of practical applications, where real-time processing of data is one of the basic assumptions. Specifically, we examine classification performance and time complexity of the approaches for various topologies and settings, respectively. For this purpose, we form and make publicly available a large-scale, class-balanced dataset of labelled RGB images. We demonstrate that, compared to ConvNets, the HOG-based passenger recognition is more suitable for practical applications. For an appropriate setting, it defeats the ConvNets in terms of time complexity while keeping excellent classification performance. To allow verification of theoretical findings, we construct an engineering prototype of the system.

In order to solve the difficulty of calling a taxi for urban residents, and reduce taxi no-load rate for taxi drivers, an Urban-Taxi accurate call service platform based on information self-matching was designed and realized by using wireless communication and combination positioning technologies. This platform can achieve real-time monitoring and management of the entire service area. By using a terminal, a passenger can book the nearest no-load taxi and wait for loading. Meanwhile, a taxi driver can use his or her terminal to get passenger’s information who wants to take a taxi. This approach simplifies calling process of passengers, matches passengers and no-load taxis intelligently, optimizes passengers travel experience, and reduces taxis no-load rate.

The main objective of this research is to investigate in the feasibility study of passenger safety monitoring using image recognition and laser scanning. Although image recognition technology has been widely used in pedestrian detection for decades, there are disadvantages about image recognition: (1) Limited immunity to lighting conditions and shading. (2) Occlusion problem. (3) Limited camera shooting angle and position. In comparison, laser scanning using 2D or 3D laser scanners developed in few years ago seems to be a perspective tool of replacing image recognition in pedestrian detection because laser beam is immune to lighting condition and data fusion from different scanner seems to be a feasible way of solving occlusion problem. In this research, we provide a summary of an extensive literature review on two pedestrian detection approaches mentioned above and demonstration examples of passenger safety monitoring are described as well.

Motion Sickness (MS) is an issue of most transportation systems. Several countermeasures to this problem in cars are proposed in the literature, but most of them are qualitative, behavioural or involving complex chassis systems. Autonomous Driving (AD) can exacerbate the problem of MS due to the change from driver to passenger with the consequent loss of control over the vehicle. With the growing interest in self-driven vehicles, the issue of MS may be so important as to undermine their benefits in terms of increased productivity; not addressing this issue may limit the users’ acceptance reducing the safety and the environmental impact of autonomous vehicles. In this thesis, the issue of carsickness is discussed, analysing the potential technologies to monitor MS in cars and discussing their feasibility. After the analysis of the monitoring technologies, in the final part of the manuscript, the issue of reducing MS in cars is analysed, proposing optimal methods for carsickness reduction. To optimise the vehicle behaviour, two Model Predictive Control (MPC) problems are formulated to analyse the potential impact in different applications of optimal MS reduction techniques. The first task is to find the optimal speed profile to travel on a given path while trading-off between minimal travel time and minimal Motion Sickness Incidence (MSI); in this part, several strategies are proposed and analysed comparing their performance. This novel methodology may be used in autonomous cars to create a reference velocity profile for lower control layers or, in human-driven ones, to advise the driver. The second task applies only to autonomous vehicles, implementing the MS optimisation in the motion planning layer; a trajectory optimisation problem is solved using the best performing strategies of the optimal speed profile task. The results show that optimising vehicle behaviour may significantly reduce the MSI, improving the user experience in cars; furthermore, the wider possibilities offered by autonomous cars allow for further reduction of MSI. The optimal methodologies proposed and the strategies used are the main contribution of this doctoral thesis; the coherency of the results in the different cases analysed suggests that these strategies have a general validity for MS reduction. In the conclusions chapter, the impact of these methods is discussed; possible ways of integrating MS monitoring technology into the proposed reduction techniques are analysed.

Technology of Internet of Things (IoT) has been thriving in recent years, and its new mainstream is the conventional self-organizing network of vehicles, i.e., what is called Internet of Vehicles (IoV). In the IoV system, each vehicle is regarded as a wireless node, and all vehicles can exchange information with each other by the wireless communication transmission technology, or transmit relevant traffic information collected through sensor components inside the vehicle to the cloud database. In this thesis, we design a highly efficient IoV system for a bus to monitor its passenger number through the mobile communication function of a wireless network. Specifically, we use the Arduino Nano with ATmega328 and the ESP8266 ESP-12F to construct the required IoV system, in which the central console in a vehicle is implemented with the Arduino Nano with ATmega328 and the number of bus passengers is collected through an infrared sensor. Besides, the console will transmit the above information to the Intelligent Bus Stop through the WiFi Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) formed by the ESP8266 ESP-12F and then to the cloud database for aggregation.

AbstractThe aerospace industry is aiming for a cleaner means of transport. One way to achieve this is by making transportation lighter, thus directly improving fuel efficiency and reducing environmental impact. A further aim, of the industry, is to reduce maintenance time to lessen operating costs, which can result in a reduction of air transport costs, benefitting both passenger and freight services. Current developments to support these aims include using advanced materials, with the current generation of aerospace structures being 50% composite materials. These materials offer a weight reduction whilst maintaining adequate stiffness; however, their damage mechanics are very complex and less deterministic than those of metals. This results in an overall reduced benefit. Structures are manufactured thicker using additional material to accommodate unknown or unpredictable failure modes, which cannot be easily detected during maintenance. A way to overcome these issues is the adoption of a structural health monitoring (SHM) inspection system.

In the past three years, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has issued two significant new regulations covering the qualification and operation of passenger railroad equipment. The 1998 Track Safety Standards and 1999 Passenger Equipment Safety Standards provide comprehensive requirements for the qualification and operation of passenger equipment. Among many safety issues, these standards address the response of rolling stock at speed to track deviations, and the potential for derailment and/or injury to passengers. The principles contained in the Safety Standards are also used by FRA to evaluate safety performance of vehicles for operation at high cant deficiency for speeds less than 90 mph as part of FRA’s waiver process. This paper describes the types of static and dynamic tests and equipment that are required with respect to vehicle-track interaction to demonstrate compliance of new equipment with the Standards, and the technical fundamentals behind the requirements. Examples include the National Railroad Passenger Corporation’s (Amtrak’s) experiences in applying for waivers and qualifying new equipment under these regulations, particularly the high cant deficiency testing of the Talgo train in the Pacific Northwest, and the high-speed and high cant deficiency testing of Maryland Rail Commuter’s (MARC’s) MARC-III bi-level cars, Acela Express trainsets and Amtrak’s high-horsepower electric locomotives in the Northeast Corridor. In addition, technical data and procedures necessary to have existing equipment approved for operation at higher speed or cant deficiency are also described. This paper highlights nuances of the new regulations and common misinterpretations.

Rubber-metal components and hydraulic vibration dampers in bogies are subject to mechanical loads and time-dependent aging. Therefore, bogies receive an overhaul after a defined limit mileage (e.g. 1.5 million km) or limit time (e.g. 8 years), during which the affected components are replaced. By optimizing the heavy maintenance of bogies in rail vehicles, it is possible to stretch the running time or mileage intervals of the revision of the bogies or individual components with an acceptable increase in risk for the operation. In particular, the components of the running gear that are not designed to be fatigue-resistant and are not already subject to a separate maintenance strategy are considered. Furthermore, hydraulic vibration dampers and rubber-to-metal elements in the wheelset guidance system, in the spring systems (primary/secondary) and in the running gear steering system are particularly relevant for the investigation. This measure can reduce maintenance costs and increase vehicle availability. This approach to maintenance optimization has been successfully applied and implemented by DB AG in local and long-distance transport for several years.

Over 400 billion passenger vehicle trajectory waypoints are collected each month in the United States. This data creates many new opportunities for agencies to assess operational characteristics of roadways for more agile management of resources. This study compared traffic counts obtained from 24 Indiana Department of Transportation traffic counts stations with counts derived by the vehicle trajectories during the same periods. These stations were geographically distributed throughout Indiana with 13 locations on interstates and 11 locations on state or US roads. A Wednesday and a Saturday in January, August, and September 2020 are analyzed. The results show that the analyzed interstates had an average penetration of 4.3% with a standard deviation of 1.0. The non-interstate roads had an average penetration of 5.0% with a standard deviation of 1.36. These penetration levels suggest that connected vehicle data can provide a valuable data source for developing scalable roadway performance measures. Since all agencies currently have a highway monitoring system using fixed infrastructure, this paper concludes by recommending agencies integrate a connected vehicle penetration monitoring program into their traditional highway count station program to monitor the growing penetration of connected cars and trucks.

Studies have indicated that emotions can significantly be influenced by environmental factors; these factors can also significantly influence drivers’ emotional state and, accordingly, their driving behavior. Furthermore, as the demand for autonomous vehicles is expected to significantly increase within the next decade, a proper understanding of drivers’/passengers’ emotions, behavior, and preferences will be needed in order to create an acceptable level of trust with humans. This paper proposes a novel semi-automated approach for understanding the effect of environmental factors on drivers’ emotions and behavioral changes through a naturalistic driving study. This setup includes a frontal road and facial camera, a smart watch for tracking physiological measurements, and a Controller Area Network (CAN) serial data logger. The results suggest that the driver’s affect is highly influenced by the type of road and the weather conditions, which have the potential to change driving behaviors. For instance, when the research defines emotional metrics as valence and engagement, results reveal there exist significant differences between human emotion in different weather conditions and road types. Participants’ engagement was higher in rainy and clear weather compared to cloudy weather. More-over, engagement was higher on city streets and highways compared to one-lane roads and two-lane highways.
