Résumé :
Despite a strong commitment to collaborate, partners may encounter conflict as they work together. Even when partners agree on goals and a common agenda, conflicts still may arise over the process they will use to search for agreements, over their relationships and threats to identity, over values or because of power differences or over how agreements will be implemented. In this chapter, partnership level factors that generate conflict are explored, including why some conflicts have long histories and are deeply rooted within fields. Several actions that partners can take to address conflicts are suggested such as acknowledging critical identities, reframing, de-escalation techniques, mediation, and shuttle diplomacy. The role of conflict and how it was handled in each of our three main cases is explored.

Résumé :
This chapter analyzes a variety of contextual factors that make partnerships a necessity. More and more societal problems have become “wicked problems” that involve many actors and defy resolution and require the attention and commitment of many interdependent players to find solutions because actions taken by one organization or sector negatively impact others. Increasing “glocalization” or fusing of the local and the global problems also propels partnerships. Six glocal conditions are explored that have spurred the growth of cross-sector partnerships locally and across the globe: deepening income inequality; growing importance of health in the economy; environmental degradation including climate change, water crises, and the need for sustainability, large-scale involuntary migration, increases in extreme weather events and continued decline in ability of governments to handle complex problems. The chapter also identifies partners’ motivations for joining partnerships, and classifies partnerships according to motives and intended outcomes.

Shulman, Shmuel, et Jennifer Connolly. The Challenge of Romantic Relationships in Emerging Adulthood. Sous la direction de Jeffrey Jensen Arnett. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199795574.013.007.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Whereas theories of romantic stage development suggest that youth in the period of emerging adulthood are fully capable of commitment to an intimate romantic relationship, recent research suggests that the relationships of many young people are quite different. Marriage and other forms of deep commitment are delayed while many youth engage in short-term casual encounters or in noncommitted relationships. This chapter suggests that these data pose a challenge to stage theories, one that can be reconciled by considering the developmental life tasks that emerging adults must simultaneously resolve. The authors propose a transitional emerging adult romantic stage, coordinating romance and life plans, in which young people strive to integrate career paths and life plans with those of a romantic partner. Resolution of this stage provides the grounding for long-term commitment to a life partner. This proposal is discussed within the perspective of life cycle and evolutionary life history theories.

Miley, Mike. Truth and Consequences. University Press of Mississippi, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.14325/mississippi/9781496825384.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Truth and Consequences interrogates the ways in which over two dozen works of fiction and film find meaning in the game show. Writers and filmmakers use the game show intermedially as a metaphor for what it means to be a person, a lover, a family, and a citizen in the media age. Despite media culture’s promises of global equality and connectivity (and one’s efforts to realize that promise), individuals wind up isolated by market-driven deception, wealth, or ethnicity. People use media to achieve greater intimacy with others, but the market nudges them to keep their distance from each other in the name of exploring options. Other networks can still assert themselves, such as the family, but can only sustain themselves if they openly defy and rewrite the rules of the media culture they inhabit. Although America espouses a commitment to democratic freedom, the state partners with imagemakers to make one’s lack of choice entertaining and resistance self-defeating. Amidst these obstacles, Americans still feel called upon to remember, to connect, to buzz in, to answer in the hopes that an escape awaits in the next round, behind the next door.

Résumé :
Human resource is the most valuable asset in an organization as it is managed, operated and run by them. The progress, survival and success of the organization is totally depends on the capabilities and the competitiveness of their HR especially in the era of critical and drastic change. As a result, HR manager has to face a more competitive, uncertain and complex HR expectations, needs and wants in a turbulent business environment. Therefore, his ability in managing HR is becoming more crucial to the success and the survival of the organisation. As HR manager is the key player in running the organisation, it is important for him to ensure a holistic and comprehensive approach, by putting in balance both the human side which is considered as soft HRM and the technical side which is considered as hard HRM, need to be simultaneously taken into consideration. Therefore, managing the human side of human resourceculture, symbols, diversity, humour, emotional intelligence, justice, forgiveness, and spiritualityis believed to be far more complicated than managing the technical side of it. The human side of human resource management treats employees as partners and a source of competitive advantage through their commitment, trust, job satisfaction, loyalty and collaboration.Furthermore, HR is viewed as a proactive rather than passive inputs in executing the task and responsibility. The managers ability in managing the human side of human resource strategically is equally important as managing the technical side as both play significant role in influencing the bottom line of the organisation through their symbiotic relationship.

Résumé :
This chapter focuses on a commitment that has been gaining force among practical theologians and Christian ethicists since the early 2000s. The commitment is that ethnographic fieldwork can be used to generate theological reflection and knowledge. The aim is to encourage a substantive shift, from a one-way engagement into an actual and generative dialogue between ethnographic theologians and anthropological ethnographers. The animating question is this: What does each dialogue partner—anthropology and theology—stand to gain from such an open exchange about ethnography? To address this question, the chapter argues that ethnographic theologians can work with a more diverse conception of ethnography while anthropological ethnographers can learn how theologians engage normativity in their work. It concludes by reflecting on genres of ethnographic writing as an opportunity for dialogue.

McCarty, Laura T. Coretta Scott King. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400632228.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Coretta Scott was committed to social justice long before she met and married Martin Luther King, Jr. She shared in all the dangers that King's prominence in the civil rights movement brought, and she saw herself as full partner in the movement. Yet she generally remained in the background, supporting King's work and caring for their children, until his assassination transformed her into a movement leader in her own right: founder of the King Center, leader of a mass demonstration for a renewed national commitment to nonviolent social change, force behind the establishment of the national holiday bearing her husband's name. This book follows the trajectory of Coretta Scott King's tumultuous life at the heart of the most important American social movement of the 20th century.

Résumé :
This chapter discusses how Gerhard Schröder, leader of Germany's Social Democratic Party, proposed to delay the euro's birth rather than start with members who had not achieved the required fiscal discipline. Campaigning to replace Helmut Kohl as chancellor in March 1998, Schröder observed that some countries would struggle to survive the rigors of the monetary union. However, once Schröder was elected chancellor in October, his hands were tied. In April 1998, the Bundestag had already authorized Germany's shift from the deutsche mark to the euro, Germany had made commitments to its European partners, and preparation for launch of the euro was in full swing. Ultimately, the euro was born uneventfully on January 1, 1999. Schröder continued the narrative of Europe's eventual political awakening; he even called for greater European “political union.” To the contrary, Schröder quickly developed a confrontational relationship with European institutions.

Birch, Jonathan. Hamilton’s Rule as an Organizing Framework. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198733058.003.0002.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Queller’s version of Hamilton’s rule (HRG), derived from the Price equation, states that the mean breeding value for a social character increases if and only if rb > c, where r is the coefficient of relatedness between social partners, b is the benefit conferred on recipients, and c is the cost incurred by actors. The value of HRG lies in its ability to provide an organizing framework for social evolution theory, helping us to interpret, classify, and compare more detailed models of particular scenarios. HRG does this by allowing us to classify causal explanations of positive change by their commitments regarding the sign of rb and c. This leads to a four-part taxonomy of explanations, comprising indirect fitness explanations, direct fitness explanations, hybrid explanations, and wholly or partially non-selective explanations. There are plausible instances of all four categories in the natural world.

Johnson, Robert Scott, et Ronald Schouten. Confidentiality and Testimonial Privilege. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199387106.003.0009.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter describes the complex medicolegal issues surrounding the rules of confidentiality and privilege and their multiple exceptions. It lays out the underpinnings of confidentiality, then addresses its various exceptions, such as waiver, duty to protect third parties, civil commitment, and mandated reporting of child abuse, elder abuse, and intimate-partner violence. Psychotherapist–patient privilege is discussed, first with regard to its origins and then with regard to its exceptions, including various forms of waiver. Practical examples illustrate these concepts for the reader to make it easier to understand these ubiquitous, but at times perplexing, concepts and to illustrate the nuances of various aspects of the law. Practitioners should note that there is considerable overlap between confidentiality and testimonial privilege, and the division of this chapter into two sections creates, in some ways, an artificial divide between two closely related concepts.

Résumé :
The book explores the history of U.S. involvement in the South China Sea disputes from the late nineteenth century through the present day. The work seeks to explain which U.S. national interests best explain its positions on the disputes over the course of more than a century. It determines that two have been most abiding: defense of freedom of the seas and the credibility of U.S. alliance commitments, particularly to the Philippines. As a result, the book examines not just the evolution of the South China Sea disputes but how those intersected with monumental shifts in the law of the sea and the state of the U.S.-Philippines alliance over the course of the twentieth century. The book also serves as a general history of the territorial and maritime disputes, providing a comprehensive overview of the factors that drove each party to stake claims, undertake new occupations, and occasionally resort to the threat or use of force. These threads come together in a forward-looking analysis of the current state of play and options for the United States and like-minded partners to pursue their long-standing interests in the face of a status quo which China has radically altered in just a few short years.

Résumé :
With China’s rising international status, the importance of India-Japan security relations has grown commensurately. India’s and Japan‘s importance for each other security has grown commensurately with China rising international status. Yet their relationship illustrates the aspirations and limits of the Look East Policy. India’s and China’s Japan’s common concern vis-à-visabout China is as much a product of political proximity as of strategic ambiguity. Many of the dimensionsDimensions of this relationship, including the construction by JapanJapan’s construction of economic corridors in India, have potential strategic consequences. Their cooperation offers a mix of integration and balancing vis-à-vis China. In the strategic domain though, the convergence between Tokyo and New Delhi is still in its infancy while Indian and Japanese decision makers are very careful in their commitments towards one another. Both India and Japan are supporting a transition towards a balanced multipolar system in Asia. Both however aspire to some form of leadership, but in Asia and need the other in the process. But both each will welcome the other as a comprehensive partner only as long as the other will not seek dominance.
