Résumé :
Abstract—This paper presents the investigation of typical parametric geometry representation methods for airfoils, namely, PARSEC method, orthogonal basis function method and CST method. The investigation assesses the fitting accuracy of these parametric methods for various airfoils including the symmetric airfoil, cambered airfoil and supercritical airfoil. The design variables of these parametric methods are solved by the methods of least squares fit. The fitting results show that the fitting accuracy of CST method is better than other parametric methods for airfoil. The aerodynamics analysis models of these typical parametric geometry representation methods for airfoil are constructed. The pressure distributions calculated for different parametric methods are compared with the corresponding experimental pressure distributions for the actual airfoil geometry.Keywords-orthogonal basis function; PARSEC; CST; fitting accuracy; pressure distributions

Résumé :
ABSTRACT This article presents the results of a comprehensive geotechnical centrifuge experimental program to investigate topographic effects across a series of single-sided slopes. The experimental campaign considered a range of governing factors, including slope inclination and ground-motion amplitude, frequency content, and duration. The testing program was nondestructive, allowing the centrifuge models to be subjected to over 140 different ground motions. Clear evidence of topographic effects, including amplification and deamplification of ground motion, were observed. Topography modified the frequency content and amplitude of the ground motion such that at the slope crest (1) peak ground accelerations ranged from 50% less than to 200% greater than the free-field, and (2) ground-motion mean square frequency shifted by as much as 55%. Higher topographic amplification levels lead to a larger topographic zone of influence, which, on average, spanned a distance equal to the slope height (H) behind and 2H in front of (toward slope) the slope crest. Physical modeling in the centrifuge proved to be a powerful experimental technique for generating empirical data to analyze topographic effects in a systematic and repeatable manner.

Résumé :
This article presents an analytical and experimental investigation of energy harvesting via parametrically excited cantilever beams. To that end, we consider a lumped-parameter non-linear model that describes the first-mode dynamics of a parametrically excited cantilever-type harvester. The model accounts for the beam's geometric and inertia non-linearities as well as non-linearities representing air drag. Using the method of multiple scales, we obtain approximate analytical expressions describing the beam response, voltage drop across a purely resistive load, and output power in the vicinity of the first principle parametric resonance. Using these expressions, we study the effect of the electromechanical coupling and load resistance on the output power. We show that these parameters play an imperative role in determining the magnitude of the output power and characterizing the broad-band properties of the harvester. Specifically, we show that the region of parametric instability wherein energy can be harvested shrinks as the coupling coefficient increases. Furthermore, we show that there exists a coupling coefficient beyond which the peak power decreases. We also demonstrate that there is a critical excitation level below which no energy can be harvested. The amplitude of this critical excitation increases with the coupling coefficient and is maximized for a given load resistance. Theoretical findings that were compared to experimental results show good agreement and reflect the general trends.

Résumé :
With the flexibility and modularity of the construction system, the ancient Chinese architecture was a configurative system until the modern time when it became figurative with nationalistic symbolism, and lost its flexibility to adapt in different functions. Through this study, the researchers try to exploit and release the powerful adaptation of this configurative system by using the method of parametric design. First of all, according to the modern parametric theory, the logic of the traditional structural system is found out by abandoning the feudal social hierarchical factors. And then, a 3D model of parametric structure with wide adaptability is established in Rhino by using its parametric design plug-in Grasshopper. Finally, on the basis of the modern parametric skin theory, two skin systems are attached to this new structure separately, in order to prove the feasibility of the new skin idea to this structure. Through the introduction of parametric modeling steps, this paper focuses on mining the modern adaptability of Chinese traditional architecture.

Résumé :
We investigated the issue of parametric bandwidth for a collinear quasi-phase-matching (QPM) optical parametric amplification (OPA). Mathematical model for evaluating the parametric bandwidth tolerance of the OPA was derived by expanding the wave-vector mismatch in Taylor series and taking the first two terms into consideration for accuracy. Based on the model, the variation of pump acceptance spectral bandwidth with parametric wavelength was discussed. The correlating curve of the pump wavelength and the parametric wavelength was obtained for the largest pump acceptance spectral bandwidth. These results were compared to that obtained by numerically calculating the parametric gain curves of OPA when pumped with different Gauss bandwidths by means of three-wave mixing equations directly, and were found to be in good accordance. The results presented are helpful for specifying the optimal pump wavelength of the parametric amplification and oscillation.

Résumé :
As a sound transmitting device that relies on the nonlinearity of a medium, a parametric array (PA) can generate high-directivity low-frequency signals using a small aperture transducer and high-frequency signals. Despite their relatively low source level, the PA is frequently used to measure the acoustic properties of materials in low-frequency regions owing to their high directivity in confined acoustic water tanks. Therefore, methods for improving the source level of secondary signals are of interest. Currently, there are two driving methods for PA: the dual-frequency PA and the broadband PA with amplitude modulation. In this study, we share the results of an elaborate and comparative experimental investigation of these two driving methods. Comparisons are made and discussed in terms of the intensity of the generated secondary signal and its characteristics in the frequency domain. Based on these factors, we confirmed that the broadband PA was more suitable as the sound source of the low-frequency characteristic measurement system of acoustic materials.

Résumé :
Summary Water-alternating-gas floods (WAG) are commonly used to improve sweep efficiency in heterogeneous reservoirs. There has been little reported in the literature, however, on the effectiveness of WAG processes where the gas is enriched above the minimum miscibility enrichment composition (MME). This paper examines how to optimize WAG processes for enriched gasfloods above the MME, particularly as a primary recovery method. Compositional simulations of x-z cross-sections are used to quantify the effects of WAG parameters, numerical dispersion, level of enrichment, and heterogeneity on local displacement efficiency and sweep efficiency. The main conclusions of this research show that the richer the gas above the MME, the fewer the number of WAG cycles required for maximum oil recovery at a given WAG ratio. Another significant observation is that overenrichment above the MME improves recovery the most when the largest permeability layers are at the bottom of the reservoir. Continuous slug injection performs better than WAG when the largest permeability layers are at the bottom of the aquifer, richer gases are used, and the vertical to horizontal permeability ratio is small. Introduction Gas enrichment is one of the important optimization variables in WAG enriched-gas floods. Recoveries from slimtube experiments with continuous gas injection often give a sharp bend at the minimum enrichment for miscibility (MME). Above the MME, slimtube recoveries do not increase significantly with enrichment. The optimum enrichment required to maximize recovery on a pattern scale in the field, however, is likely different from the MME. The difference in the optimum enrichment may be largely the result of greater mixing in the reservoir than exists in slimtubes. In addition, enrichment may impact sweep efficiency in 2D displacements. Oil and gas mixing in a reservoir can include mechanisms such as molecular diffusion, mechanical dispersion, gravity crossflow, viscous crossflow, and capillary crossflow. WAG in particular causes significant mixing of reservoir and injected fluids, depending on the total volume of the gas injected (slug volume), the WAG ratio, and the number of gas cycles or WAG frequency. There are several reasons why recovery could increase for gas enrichments above the MME. First, the density and viscosity of the gas will increase with enrichment, which may improve sweep efficiency. Second, mixing can cause an otherwise multicontact miscible flood (MCM) to develop some two-phase flow (Johns et al. 1993; Walsh and Orr 1990; Pande and Orr 1989; Lake 1989). Richer gases mix closer to the critical locus in the two-phase zone, which causes a smaller and slower lean gas bank. A smaller lean gas bank could improve sweep efficiency. Last, richer gases, which mix near the critical locus, decrease "miscible residual oil" by increasing the velocity of the trailing evaporation fronts.

Résumé :
Topology optimization is a powerful method of material minimization in structural design problems. The obtained topology and the compliance values by this method are very sensitive to each of the input parameters such as, applied force, volume fraction, dimensions, and support-rigidity. In real-life situations, these parameters may vary due to material uncertainty, manufacturing imperfections, and operating conditions. Hence, the topology obtained during the conceptual design phase may not suffice the actual working condition. Thus, it is desirable to explore individual and the combined effects of the parametric variations and uncertainties. This study describes a systematic approach utilized to investigate the effect of different input parameters on compliance values along with material and load uncertainties for a topologically optimized structure. In this paper, applied force, volume fraction, and aspect ratio of the domain are treated as input parameters and their effects are analyzed. Proposed work modifies the solid isotropic microstructure with penalization method to incorporate the effect of uncertainties and uses design of experiments approach to investigate statistically significant input parameters. Four different benchmark problems available in the literature are analyzed and the results are obtained for aforesaid input parameters along with uncertainties. Results obtained from this investigation will help designers/practitioners to select suitable input parameters combination to achieve targeted compliance.

Résumé :
In this paper, the possibility of excitation of parametric rolling on a ship advancing in head sea condition is studied on an experimental basis. The excitation of parametric rolling was effectively observed in the experimental tests, together with some case of capsizing. The parametric rolling exhibited the typical subharmonic behavior. The use of classical Mathieu equation theory, coupled with hydrostatic calculations in longitudinal waves, accounting for both vertical motions and wave effect on stability, allows a satisfactory explanation of the observed phenomena. In addition, the problem of determination of roll damping dependence on ship speed was solved by using roll decay tests in calm water with forward speed. A simplified nonlinear modeling was proposed to account for the roll motion amplitude above threshold. The comparison with the experimental results is reasonably good.

Experiments were conducted based on L9 array of Taguchi method with stainless steel µ-tool of 300µm diameter using NaOH electrolyte. An attempt has been made to find out the single as well as multi-objective optimal parametric combinations for maximum MRR and minimum ROC. The single-objective parametric combinations were selected as 45V/20wt%/20mm and 25V/20wt%/40mm for maximum MRR and minimum ROC respectively whereas multi-objective optimal parametric combinations was found as 25V/20wt%/40mm. Further mathematical models have been developed between the above machining parameters and characteristics.

Résumé :
Rock wettability plays an important role in water flooding process as it controls fluid flow, oil recovery and distribution of residual oil in any oil reservoir. In this context, polar oil components such as asphaltene contents may adsorb onto the pore mineral surfaces and alter wettability of the reservoir rock. Due to this importance, this study aims to investigate the effects of different parameters such as concentration of asphaltene, salinity, temperature and time on the rock wettability alteration process. For this purpose, dynamic contact angle measurement was performed. The results showed that the increment of asphaltene concentration in the oleic phase changes the wettability of water-wet sandstone rock to oil-wet condition; the increase in the concentration of asphaltene fraction from 0.1 to 5.0 g/lit increased the contact angle from 0 to 97 degrees. In addition, the increase in the brine salinity from 500 to 8000 ppm increased the ability of asphaltene to adsorb on the rock surface and consequently, increased oil wetness; the equivalent contact angle changed from 0 to 113 degree for 5 g/lit asphaltene content after 192 hours. Moreover, the results illustrated that a rise in temperature from 40 to 70 o C accelerates adsorption of asphaltene, but it has not significant effect on the final contact angle. Furthermore, the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) is incorporated into the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to correlate contact angle with the aforementioned parameters. To this end, the obtained experimental data are used to train and test the algorithm. The outputs of ANFIS-PSO algorithm are compared with the measured contact angles in both graphical and statistical manners. The training and testing determination coefficients (R 2 ) have been obtained as 0.99091 and 0.98761, respectively. The analysis indicates that the predictive model can be used with a high degree of confidence to investigate the effect of different parameters on wettability alteration

Résumé :
The article explores parametric management of economic entity production volume within framework of weak and strong hypothesis of bounded rationality. The concept of parametric management with the example of economic entity behavior modeling under the conditions of bounded rationality is considered. The qualitative analysis of nonlinear kinetics differential equations is applied as the basic method of the investigation suggested. The investigation proves the possibility of parametric stimulation of economic entity production volume increasing by the means of: transfers, taxes, fixed prices depending on different conditions, such as the model of economic entity rationality, demand function, borrowing financial assets accessibility. The invariant instruments of parametric management for different models of economic actors strategic behavior are proposed. The managerial problems explored may be generalized for solving the coordination problem as a hole.

Résumé :
AbstractWe will study one-parameter families of differentiable optimal control problems given by:Here, at given times t the inequality constraint functions are of semi-infinite nature, the objective functional may also be of max-type. For each s ∈ ℝ the problem is equivalent to a one-parameter family (Ps (t))t∈[a,b] of differentiable optimization problems. From these the consideration of generalized critical trajectories, such as a local minimum trajectory, comes into our investigation. According to a concept introduced by Hettich, Jongen and Stein in optimization, we distinguish eight types of generalized critical trajectories. Under suitable continuity, compactness and integrability assumptions, those problems, which exclusively have generalized critical points being of one of these eight types, are generic. We study normal forms and characteristic examples, locally around these trajectories. Moreover, we indicate the related concept of structural stability of optimal control problems due to the topological behaviour of the lower level sets under small data perturbations. Finally, we discuss the numerical consequences of our investigations for pathfollowing techniques with jumps.

Résumé :
Nonaqueous redox flow batteries are promising candidates for large-scale energy storage technologies. However, the effect of structural design and key factors limiting the performance are still not thoroughly understood. In this work, we constructed a physical model to study the effect of various design parameters on the performance of such a battery. It was found that the kinetics of redox reaction was improved with active material concentration and electrode surface area. The modeling results also showed that the local current density was much higher in the vicinity of membrane than near the current collector due to relatively low ionic conductivity of electrolytes. Furthermore, decreasing the electrode thickness and increasing the membrane conductivity both reduced the voltage loss associated with ohmic resistance, thereby resulting in improved battery performance. The obtained numerical simulation results would be helpful not only for understanding the physicochemical process in nonaqueous vanadium flow batteries but also for future structural optimization of these batteries.
