Résumé :
Abstract—This paper presents the investigation of typical parametric geometry representation methods for airfoils, namely, PARSEC method, orthogonal basis function method and CST method. The investigation assesses the fitting accuracy of these parametric methods for various airfoils including the symmetric airfoil, cambered airfoil and supercritical airfoil. The design variables of these parametric methods are solved by the methods of least squares fit. The fitting results show that the fitting accuracy of CST method is better than other parametric methods for airfoil. The aerodynamics analysis models of these typical parametric geometry representation methods for airfoil are constructed. The pressure distributions calculated for different parametric methods are compared with the corresponding experimental pressure distributions for the actual airfoil geometry.Keywords-orthogonal basis function; PARSEC; CST; fitting accuracy; pressure distributions

Résumé :
ABSTRACT This article presents the results of a comprehensive geotechnical centrifuge experimental program to investigate topographic effects across a series of single-sided slopes. The experimental campaign considered a range of governing factors, including slope inclination and ground-motion amplitude, frequency content, and duration. The testing program was nondestructive, allowing the centrifuge models to be subjected to over 140 different ground motions. Clear evidence of topographic effects, including amplification and deamplification of ground motion, were observed. Topography modified the frequency content and amplitude of the ground motion such that at the slope crest (1) peak ground accelerations ranged from 50% less than to 200% greater than the free-field, and (2) ground-motion mean square frequency shifted by as much as 55%. Higher topographic amplification levels lead to a larger topographic zone of influence, which, on average, spanned a distance equal to the slope height (H) behind and 2H in front of (toward slope) the slope crest. Physical modeling in the centrifuge proved to be a powerful experimental technique for generating empirical data to analyze topographic effects in a systematic and repeatable manner.

Résumé :
This article presents an analytical and experimental investigation of energy harvesting via parametrically excited cantilever beams. To that end, we consider a lumped-parameter non-linear model that describes the first-mode dynamics of a parametrically excited cantilever-type harvester. The model accounts for the beam's geometric and inertia non-linearities as well as non-linearities representing air drag. Using the method of multiple scales, we obtain approximate analytical expressions describing the beam response, voltage drop across a purely resistive load, and output power in the vicinity of the first principle parametric resonance. Using these expressions, we study the effect of the electromechanical coupling and load resistance on the output power. We show that these parameters play an imperative role in determining the magnitude of the output power and characterizing the broad-band properties of the harvester. Specifically, we show that the region of parametric instability wherein energy can be harvested shrinks as the coupling coefficient increases. Furthermore, we show that there exists a coupling coefficient beyond which the peak power decreases. We also demonstrate that there is a critical excitation level below which no energy can be harvested. The amplitude of this critical excitation increases with the coupling coefficient and is maximized for a given load resistance. Theoretical findings that were compared to experimental results show good agreement and reflect the general trends.

Résumé :
Fibre optical parametric amplifiers have been attracting much attention since their first demonstrations. They are capable of providing a high amount of gain over large bandwidth ranges. Since what we call a fibre optical parametric amplifier is technically a combination of one or two pumps and a suitable highly-nonlinear fibre, their evolution is closely dependent on the improvements in the highly-nonlinear fibre technology and on that of the pumps. Recently, the advent of silica-based highly-nonlinear fibres with proper dispersion characteristics and the availability of high-power erbium-doped fibre amplifiers capable of delivering several Watts of continuous-wave power have led to great improvements in achieving better performances with fibre optical parametric amplifiers. The fibre length required is reduced and fibre optical parametric amplifiers can be operated in the continuous-wave regime, which is necessary for being useful in telecommunications. This work is a report of an investigation of different aspects of fibre optical parametric amplifiers. After reviewing the fundamentals of the operation of this kind of amplifiers, the difficulties facing them are discussed. Among these issues, the problem of nonlinear cross-talk is investigated in more details. 1 experimentally proved that by reducing fibre length, it is possible to keep the crosstalk in a tolerable range. The amplification of 26 communication channels modulated at about 40 Gb/s aggregating to the total capacity of more than 1 Tb/s, while obtaining performance results comparable to those of erbium-doped fibre amplifiers may tone down the chief criticism on the parametric amplifiers. Two amplifiers with a record gain (60 dB for a two-pump amplifier) and a record bandwidth (270 nm in a one-pump amplifier) were demonstrated and it has been shown that there might be possibilities for improving the adverse effect of the Raman gain on the flatness of the gain spectra of the parametric amplifiers at the expense of losing some gain. A sample of a newly-developed bismuth-oxide highly-nonlinear fibre is used to construct a novel scheme for wavelength demultiplexing, and the possibility of simultaneous time- and wavelength demultiplexing is discussed.

Résumé :
Engine development has been in the direction of increased turbine inlet temperatures to improve efficiency and power output. Secondary flows develop as a result of a near-wall pressure gradient in the stagnating flow approaching the inlet nozzle guide vane as well as a strong cross-passage gradient within the passage. These flow structures enhance heat transfer and convect hot core flow gases onto component surfaces. In modern engines it has become critical to cool component surfaces to extend part life. Bypass leakage flow emerging from the slot between the combustor and turbine endwalls can be utilized for cooling purposes if properly designed. This study examines a three-dimensional slot geometry, scalloped to manipulated leakage flow distribution. Statistical techniques are used to decouple the effects of four geometric parameters and quantify the relative influence of each on endwall cooling levels and near-wall total pressure losses. The slot geometry is also optimized for robustness across a range of inlet conditions. Average upstream distance to the slot is shown to dominate overall cooling levels with nominal slot width gaining influence at higher leakage flow rates. Scalloping amplitude is most influential to near-wall total pressure loss as formation of the horseshoe vortex and cross flow within the passage are affected. Scalloping phase alters local cooling levels as leakage injection is shifted laterally across the endwall.

Résumé :
Vibration-based damage detection (VBDD) methods are used to detect damage in structural members non-evasively. This investigation began with two objectives: to prove a VBDD method could detect damage using strain gauges both analytically and experimentally, and to then use that method to determine the distance from a damaged area that strain gauges could be effective. Work began simultaneously using finite element software and physical experiments. It was determined that a VBDD method could detect damage with strain gauges in both settings. A parametric study was then completed that used probabilistic methods to identify an effective range for strain gauges over the length of the structural member.

Résumé :
Spray is an efficient tool in the usage whose primary objectives are to obtain droplets with increased liquid surface area and more dispersed liquid over a larger volume. The determination of spray characteristics has been a topic of extensive research recently. In the present investigation, the flow structure of a spray issuing from an oil burner nozzle was determined in a parametrical manner. The main tool in the experimental research is the Interferometric Particle Imaging (IPI) configuration. This method exploits the interference between light reflected from and refracted through individual transparent spray droplets which are illuminated by a laser light sheet in a wide angle forward-scatter region. Based on a scattering theory, the droplet diameter of spray particles can be related to the light pattern scattered from that particle. In addition, using double-framed images also enables the calculation of velocities associated with these particles. In this way, as a representation of spray structure, the droplet size and velocity distributions were obtained prior to a change in the primary parameters of liquid flow e.g. surface tension, viscosity, density and the injection pressure. The evolution of spray characteristics in space were also examined by conducting measurements in different radial and axial locations relative to spray centerline.

Résumé :
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2005.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 86).
Recent advances in digital fabrication technologies have sparked a renewed interest in topology and biological form. The ability to design and prototype structural forms inspired by nature has challenged architects preconceived notions of space and form. With the assistance of parametric modeling and rapid prototyping we now not only have the ability to physically generate complex forms, but also the ability to create a seemingly infinite number of formal variations. As a result, this has caused architects to push toward new spatial concepts. Among these new spatial concepts are those that seek to create entire building systems out of a single material solution. Inspiration for such systems can be found by studying organic cellular structures. Unlike the component based design processes of most architects, in which multiple problems are solved through multiple material solutions, natural systems tend to create solutions that solve multiple problems through one material solution. This thesis is interested in answering the question, "Is it possible to create a building system (both structure and enclosure) out of a single adaptable building unit?" Furthermore, can the building unit also be capable of transforming from being either permeable to impermeable? If so, how might this challenge our existing notions of boundaries?

Résumé :
The natural gas industry operates over 8000 stationary large bore (bore greater than 14 in) natural gas engines for natural gas compression on pipelines and power generation. As emissions regulations become increasingly more stringent, the need for low cost methods for compliance demonstration arises. A PEMS model is one such approach. Research in this area has increased significantly during the last decade. PEMS models for this application utilize parameters commonly measured on industrial engines in the field to predict engine-out emissions. Monitoring emissions in this manner represents a significant cost savings over the periodic use of chemiluminescence NOX analyzers, which are not standard equipment in natural gas compressor stations. PEMS model accuracy is dependent on the quality of the input data, both the training NOX measurements and the selection of input parameters. Hence, it is important to have both reliable data measurement methods and an understanding of engine operating parameters relation to NOX. This work is part of the body of work referred to as the Integrated Test Plan (ITP), performed at the Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory (EECL). This report details an investigation into Parametric Emissions Monitoring System (PEMS) models. It is the final document to be delivered under the ITP program. Much of the work performed under the ITP program focused on Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) research. However, the emphasis of the PEMS work is on the prediction of oxides of nitrogen (NOX) emissions from large bore natural gas engines. In this work two different PEMS models are developed, a semi-empirical model and a neural network model. The semi-empirical model is based on general relationships between NOX emissions and engine parameters, but contains empirical constants that are determined based on the best fit to engine experimental data. The neural network model utilizes a similar set of input parameters, but relies on the neural network code to determine the relationships between input parameters and measured NOX emissions. The neural network model also contains empirical constants. The mathematics involved in both models is described. A single term semi-empirical model, which has been utilized in the literature as a PEMS model, is applied for comparative purposes.

Résumé :
This research experimentally and numerically evaluated the reserve strength of girder bridges due to bridge rail load shedding. The investigation included: (1) performing non-destructive field testing on two steel girder bridges and one prestressed concrete girder bridge, (2) developing validated finite element numerical models, and (3) performing parametric numerical investigations using the validated numerical modeling approach. Measured data indicated that intact, integral, reinforced concrete rails participate in carrying live load. Research results culminated in recommendations to evaluate the reserve strength of girder bridges due to the participation of the rail, as well as recommendations for bridge inspectors for evaluating steel girder bridges subjected to vehicular collision.

Résumé :
COVID-19 has created an unprecedented global health crisis that caused millions of infections and deaths worldwide. Many, however, argue that pre-existing social inequalities have led to inequalities in infection and death rates across social classes, with the most-deprived classes are worst hit. In this paper, we derive semi/non-parametric estimators of Health Concentration Curve (HC) that can quantify inequalities in COVID-19 infections and deaths and help identify the social classes that are most at risk of infection and dying from the virus. We express HC in terms of copula function that we use to build our estimators of HC. For the semi-parametric estimator, a parametric copula is used to model the dependence between health and socio-economic variables. The copula function is estimated using maximum pseudo-likelihood estimator after replacing the cumulative distribution of health variable by its empirical analogue. For the non-parametric estimator, we replace the copula function by a Bernstein copula estimator. Furthermore, we use the above estimators of HC to derive copula-based estimators of health Gini coeffcient. We establish the consistency and the asymptotic normality of HC’s estimators. Using different data-generating processes and sample sizes, a Monte-Carlo simulation exercise shows that the semiparametric estimator outperforms the smoothed nonparametric estimator, and that the latter does better than the empirical estimator in terms of Integrated Mean Squared Error. Finally, we run an extensive empirical study to illustrate the importance of HC’s estimators for investigating inequality in COVID-19 infections and deaths in the U.S. The empirical results show that the inequalities in state’s socio-economic variables like poverty, race/ethnicity, and economic prosperity are behind the observed inequalities in the U.S.’s COVID-19 infections and deaths.

Sridhar et Dunn. L51793 The Effects of Water Chemistry on Internal Corrosion of Steel Pipelines. Chantilly, Virginia : Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), juillet 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010425.

Résumé :
The ability to safely transport wet, untreated natural gases through pipelines offshore or at other inaccessible locations is an important factor in the development of new gas fields. The internal corrosion rate of steel pipelines varies in a complex way with the gas composition, specifically CO2 , O2 , and H2 S, and condensed water chemistry. Estimating the corrosion rate of steel at inaccessible locations from the analysis of the gas and water composition from an accessible location will enable a better determination of the need for corrosion inhibitors. Quantitative understanding of the corrosion rate of steel under these conditions will be key to an accurate risk assessment of pipelines from internal corrosion. Previous work examined the effects of gas composition and slow liquid flow conditions on corrosion of steel. A parametric equation was developed that essentially reflected the deleterious effects of CO2 and O2 , and the beneficial effect of H2S on corrosion (Lyle, 1997). While this study provided important information regarding the deleterious effect of oxygen in the gas phase, the effects of condensed water composition, especially scale-forming species such as calcium and magnesium, were not examined. Furthermore, a better thermodynamic and kinetic understanding of the effects of the gas and liquid phase composition was needed. The present project, while an extension of the previous project, breaks important new ground: (i) the water chemistry typically found in pipelines is included in the tests; (ii) the scale and corrosion product formation is examined using a thermodynamic speciation software; (iii) surface analysis of the corroded samples is performed using laser Raman spectroscopy in order to confirm the thermodynamic model prediction; and (iv) electrochemical tests are conducted to understand the corrosion kinetics. A discussion of the general literature on internal corrosion is presented in the next section, followed by a summary of results from previous SwRI projects in this area. The thermodynamic approach and results are presented in Chapter 2. The experimental results are presented in Chapters 3 and 4, respectively, along with a discussion of the results in terms of thermodynamic and kinetic framework. Chapter 5 summarizes the results of this project and provides recommendations for further investigations. Details of the thermodynamic calculations, electrochemical experimental results, and analyses of the corrosion products are presented in the appendices.
