Parallels between some of Rank's basic assumptions and those of ancient Indian thought are presented; both describe life as inherently painful, and both detail four very similar stages of development whereby a person may transcend a life of futility. Rank was well versed in philosophy, had ideas that parallel Hindu concepts, and chose to be cremated as is the Hindu tradition rather than be buried according to the prevailing custom.

Today the whole world celebrates a jubilee date — the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff. The Moscow Conservatory conducts monographic programs in all of its four halls, where all genres of the composer's legacy are presented: three operas are staged, all symphonic works are played, all romances are sung. This article is devoted to the creative interrelations and great friendship between S. V. Rachmaninoff and N. K. Medtner from the conservatory years. It focuses on the later work of the two composers, whose main genres are marked by stylistic parallels. This is about Russianness in their work, about the abiding longing for their beloved homeland, which nourished their inspiration until the last years of their lives. The stylistic comparisons are based on Rachmaninoff's "Symphonic Dances" and Medtner's Piano Quintet, Rachmaninoff's Fourth Piano Concerto and Medtner's Third Piano Ballade Concerto.

Inquiries concerning the nature of ‘biographical aging’ within the emerging field of ‘narrative gerontology’ have pointed to the need for a detailed consideration of the parallels between lived texts and literary ones. This article draws on a number of such parallels in order to outline what might be called apoeticsof aging. The central proposal is organized around 3 key concepts: narrative imagination, narrative identity, and narrative environment. The article concludes by speculating on some of the applications of the proposal in relation to growing old, as opposed to merely getting old. (Aging, Narrative, Gerontology, Poetics, Imagination)

The article presents the outlines of an integrative theory of meaning based on the concept of value, understood both as a biological and as a socio-cultural category, synthesizing ideas from evolutionary and developmental psychology, semiotics and cybernetics. The proposal distinguishes between four types of meaning systems, cue-based, associational, mimetic and symbolic, forming an evolutionary and epigenetic hierarchy. The theory is applied to phylogenetic and human ontogenetic development, pointing out significant parallels between the two processes, involving both continuity and discontinuity between the different levels. Since one of the basic tenets of the theory is that only living systems have intrinsic value, which is a necessary and sufficient condition for possessing the category meaning, negative implications are drawn for the meaning potential of (current) artificial systems.

A simple, heuristic formula with parallels to the Drake Equation is introduced to help focus discussion on open questions for the origins of life in a planetary context. This approach indicates a number of areas where quantitative progress can be made on parameter estimation for determining origins of life probabilities, based on constraints from Bayesian approaches. We discuss a variety of “microscale” factors and their role in determining “macroscale” abiogenesis probabilities on suitable planets. We also propose that impact ejecta exchange between planets with parallel chemistries and chemical evolution could in principle amplify the development of molecular complexity and abiogenesis probabilities. This amplification could be very significant, and both bias our conclusions about abiogenesis probabilities based on the Earth and provide a major source of variance in the probability of life arising in planetary systems. We use our heuristic formula to suggest a number of observational routes for improving constraints on origins of life probabilities.

Abstract The American fiction writer Richard Yates, whose life bore many biographical parallels to F. Scott Fitzgerald's, explicitly described Fitzgerald as his “master” in an essay and wrote a short story, “Saying Goodbye to Sally,” focused on the personal and professional parallels between Fitzgerald's final years as a Hollywood screenwriter in the late 1930s and the period in the early 1960s when Yates worked in Hollywood writing movie scripts. This essay discusses recent criticism of Yates's life and work, and closely examines his short story's use of Yates's thinly disguised alter ego.

Abstract This article examines various parallels or patterns between the Third Gospel and book of Acts. Parallels are determined by identical words, phrases, contextual similarities, and sequential agreement of data between Luke's two-part work. Prototypes from the life of Jesus in the Third Gospel are repeated or amplified in Acts with reference to episodes involving Peter, John, Stephen, Philip, the first evangelists to the Gentiles in Antioch, and above all, the Apostle Paul, who commands two-thirds of the Luke–Acts parallels. The passion of Jesus is the most important element of the Third Gospel for Lukan parallels, serving as a prototype of three-quarters of the antitypes in Acts, especially as a prototype for a “passion of Paul.” The article concludes by considering the purpose and significance of Luke–Acts parallels, especially as they are illustrated by the Lukan master-disciple paradigm, “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully outfitted will be like his teacher” (Luke 6:40).

AbstractIn a move that has puzzled commentators, Derrida’s The Animal that Therefore I Am rejects claims for continuity between the human and the animal, aligning such claims with the ideology of “biologistic continuism.” This problematization of the logic of the human-animal limit holds implications for how we are to understand life in relation to auto-affection, immanence in relation to transcendence, and naturalism in relation to phenomenology. Derrida’s abyssal logic parallels the “strange kinship” described by Merleau-Ponty, though only if this strangeness is intensified as “hetero-affection” by incorporating death into life. Following Merleau-Ponty and Elizabeth Grosz, we locate the creative moment of this abyssal intimacy in the transformative productions of sexual difference. This positive account of the excess of hetero-affection reconciles phenomenology with evolution and offers a figure for thinking the thickening and multiplying of the differences between human and non-human, living and nonliving, corporeal and cosmic.

It uses such criteria of studying non-recognized states as historical prerequisites of establishment and stages of formation, internal structure and formation of statehood institutions, control over its own territory, international recognition. It pays particular attention to international ties with China which became an area of foreign-political interests of the Pacific Region countries. The article makes a conclusion of existence of common ideas and regularities in arising and development such state formations. The Far Eastern Republic can be regarded as a prototype of Manchzhou-Go, while the «bufferism» as a unique feature inherent to the Far Eastern policy of the XX-th century.

Résumé :
This study answers a phenomenon of double funeralrite that often occurs among the Catholics who converted from Marapu, the ethnic religion of the people of Sumba. Double funeralrite is the practice of funeral ceremonies consisting of official liturgy of the Catholic Church and spontaneously followed by a number of Marapu rites. Such a practice indicates a dualism of belief, in the sense that people have embraced the Catholic faith but are still attached to the elements of their old beliefs. In this study the author investigates in depth both the funeral rites according to Marapu and the double practice phenomenon in funeral ceremonies of Catholics who converted from Marapu. The main purpose of this research is to find parallels and intersections between Catholic’s concept of life after death and that of Marapu’s. Discussion and analysis of the data prioritizes the meaning behind each verbal and non-verbal expression. The meaning of prayers, rituals and symbols used in funeral according to Marapu reveals universal values that parallel to the values contained in Catholic teaching. According to Marapu belief, death is the return of the soul towards “ancestral village”, which is the final resting place of souls after death. This return is believed to be a long journey before arriving at the ancestral village. Prayers and ceremonies carried out by humans aim to help the soul to enter the ancestral village. This concept parallels to the Catholic understanding of soul purification after death before entering the eternal happiness in Heaven. Such parallels allow a construction of the encounter between Catholic teachings and Marapu ones about life after death.

There has recently been an increased interest in end-of-life experiences (ELEs) in humans, but ELEs in non-human animals have not yet been assessed. In this paper, wepresent findings from a study we performed to collect and analyze reports about remarkablebehavioral aspects of animals during their last phase of life. After publicappeals in which we asked for reports about ELEs in animals, we received numerousresponses from pet owners. We were able to group these experiences into specificcategories, which we termed the last goodbyes, last visits, last rally, retreating into solitude, unusual premonitions of death, somatic surprises, terminal lucidity in animals, andpotential near-death visions in animals. We present 43 case reports pertaining to thesedifferent categories. Many of them show striking similarities to remarkable behavior reportedby dying people. This similarity between animal and human ELEs might be a signof a common physiology underpinning such experiences and could also increase therecognition that animals share an inner life similar to that of humans during all phasesof life. This could lead to a more respectful treatment of pets, as well as of animals infarms, zoos, and in the wild. However, as our study was of a preliminary character andonly the first of its kind, we encourage further systematic research in this field. In theSupplementary Material, we publish 71 additional cases for those who would like tostudy more examples.

This conceptual paper explores how the system of experiences that children encounter in a traditional, residential summer camp setting parallel traditional, residential, college setting for first-year students. Camp is a complex system in the sphere of youth development programs (YDP) because of the expectation for rapid adjustment by the camper to a novel physical and social environment. Many YDPs have a moderate to high level of connection with the child’s normal life, defined as similar to school or home environments and the activities in which youth regularly participate. A traditional residential summer camp offers a different degree of novelty than most other YDP settings. This paper offers a list of physical elements present in a camp setting that parallel the college setting and considers common camp-college parallels to articulate connected physical, social, emotional, and intellectual domains. This integration of ideas illustrates how the socio-physical novelty of the camp experience serves as a crucible for rapid adjustment and multi-dimensional growth in a way that is uniquely different from many other youth development settings.

Résumé :
Abstract In May 1924, when the Fitzgeralds moved to the Riviera to complete The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald wrote to Thomas Boyd, “I’m going to read nothing but Homer + Homeric literature—and history 540–1200 A.D. until I finish my novel, + I hope to God I don’t see a soul for six months.” Reading Gatsby in the context of the Iliad and the Odyssey reveals a number of thematically significant parallels and contrasts between Fitzgerald’s characters and the major figures in the Homeric epics. Jay Gatsby, as Fitzgerald traces his life from beginning to end, is a type of both Achilles, a mythic culture hero in a long quest to realize his destiny, and Odysseus, who works to “repeat the past” after a twenty-year absence. Daisy is the Penelope who determines the end of Gatsby’s/Odysseus’s quest; Tom is Antinous, the suitor who disrupts the hero’s house, and, in a major inversion in the novel, destroys the hero’s return. Most conspicuous is the parallel between Nick Carraway, a lost figure who finds a renewal of the promise of life in Gatsby, and Telemachus, the son in search of his father. Taken together, these parallels and contrasts reveal the dramatic functions of Fitzgerald’s characters, their relationships, their sometimes stark actions and responses to one another, and Fitzgerald’s epic theme of American aspiration in the 1920s.

Although documented cultural and social contacts between Hungary and Ireland extend back to the Middle Ages, it is through a series of 19th and early-20th century writings that mutual interest by leading figures of Hungarian and Irish public life in the events of their countries is first revealed. These writings have given rise to the notion of “Hungarian-Irish national parallels”, the validity of which, however, has recently been challenged on grounds of historical accuracy. My paper examines mid-19th century works by Irish nationalists that include references to Hungary, some of which have been used so far to demonstrate Hungarian-Irish parallels. While also considering historical accuracy, I will widen the scope of my study by highlighting the ideological aspects of these references. My aim is to show that national parallels are ideological constructions which may reveal an effort of elevating one’s own nation to the level of another European nation that is viewed as a model in a given historical moment.

Abstract. The article discusses some facts from historical background, from language status, and some culture specific issues of American Indians and Kyrgyz. The main facts deal with possible common origin of both cultures which may explain such common issues as nomadic way of life, shamanism revealing consciousness of Indians and Kyrgyz, some aspects of marriage peculiarities. Being endangered languages American Indian languages are of special interest to anthropologists, thus stressing the importance of turning to informants. The historical hardships unite these people in the aspect of suppression of Indians from new settlers and gold searchers and that of Kyrgyz from the tsarist Russia. Though they both seem not to lose the core of their culture – being strong physically in hard and severe conditions of living and at the same time conserving and observing their customs and way of life, and their mentality of kind and hospitable people. Résumé :
Abstract Background Human life expectancy continues to rise in most populations. This rise not only leads to longer lives but also is accompanied by improved health at a given age, that is, recent cohorts show a reduction of biological age for a given chronological age. Despite or even because of the diversity of biomarkers of aging, an accurate quantification of a general shift in biological age across time has been challenging. Methods Here, we compared age perception of facial images taken in 2001 over a decade and related these changes in age perception to changes in life expectancy. Results We show that age perception changes substantially across time and parallels the progress in life expectancy. In 2012, people aged more than 70 years needed to look 2.3 years younger to be rated the same age as in 2002. Conclusions Our results suggest that age perception reflects the past life events better than predicts future length of life, that is, it is written in your face how much you have aged so far. We draw this conclusion as age perception among elderly individuals paralleled changes in life expectancy at birth but not changes in remaining life expectancies. We suggest that changes in age perception should be explored for younger age classes to inform on aging processes, including whether aging is delayed or slowed with increasing life expectancy.

Résumé :
Abstract American composer Louise Talma’s opera The Alcestiad can be read as a highly autobiographical work; its themes can be understood as crucial elements of Talma’s own life. These correlations include: the demands and restrictions of society upon women’s behavior and desires, particularly its emphasis upon conforming to heteronormative performance, represented by Alcestis’s hesitant acceptance of marriage and motherhood, and Talma’s reluctant career as a pedagogue and internal conflict over her relationship with Nadia Boulanger; and the yearning for a life of devotion to a religion and a single art, in which Alcestis’s desire to serve as an oracular priestess of Apollo and Talma’s desire to dedicate herself to her work as a Catholic and as a composer are parallel tropes. This essay explores these parallels and demonstrates the ways in which the close relationships between The Alcestiad and Talma’s life are manifested in Talma’s use of rhythm in text-setting within the work.

It aims at depicting those aspects of the society through a careful examination of the settings, particularly East egg and the Valley of Ashes. The former represents the protagonist’s ideal reality in which he dreams of becoming famous, wealthy, and more satisfied. Yet, the climax and tragic ending of Gatsby reveal the dystopian aspects of East Egg society, such as chaos, prohibition, and social disintegration. Likewise, the valley of ashes is made out of ashes, and its gray color stands for emptiness and the moral decadence of its people. The social hierarchy of the American society, along with its expectations, demoralizes its people; the worldly desires of Gatsby ruin his life as well as the future he imagines in East Egg. Thus, a state of material well-being emerged but lacking in spiritual life or purpose. Throughout the novel, Gatsby’s life and shocking manners reflect those dystopian aspects of a post-war society in which wild parties, illegal drinking, and crimes prevail. Gatsby’s dream of becoming wealthy leaves him with a painful awareness of inferiority, isolation, and ultimately death.

Résumé :
Walleye (Sander vitreus) is a native fish species in North America, and its zoogeographic range covers several climatic zones. Using multivariate statistical approaches and published growth data, we explored the association between climatic conditions (frost frequency, precipitation, air temperature, solar radiation, and cloud cover) and growth of walleye from 89 populations in North America. We found significant concordance between climatic conditions and walleye growth; however, the pattern of concordance differed among populations that originated from geographical regions that were colonized from different glacial refugia. This suggests that contemporary differences in walleye growth patterns related to local climatic conditions may have been shaped by evolutionary divergence that occurred among refugia during the last glaciation. We suggest that caution should be taken when assessing possible effects of climate variation and climate change on the life history traits of different walleye and other fish populations, especially when such assessments potentially include several genetically distinct groups. Procrustes analysis was shown to be an effective tool for characterizing how a multivariate set of response variables change in response to generalized changes in a multivariate set of independent variables.

The connection between the written Targums, which are translations of Sacred Scripture into Aramaic, and the oral Targums used in synagogues is not well understood. Rabbinical tradition suggests that the Targums were written to make Scripture understandable to ordinary people during synagogue readings. However, the article argues that the Targums were also associated with various aspects of daily religious life, reflecting the ideas and realities of the 4th–5th c. CE when they were created. We discuss discrepancies between written rules and real-life practices, individual and communal study of Targums, their place in translation and commentary traditions, and traces of oral speech in their language. We also explore their use in protective spells inscribed on “magic cups.” Finally, we draw typological parallels between Targumic texts and Church Slavonic liturgical language in the early 20th c., both designed to preserve sacred languages in worship.

Résumé :
The author of the article aims at seeking individual connections between folk ballads, characterized by peculiar poetics and melodics, and dramatic life experiences of their performers, attributing particular relevance to the keynote narrative of the misery. Rather than approaching ballads as a genre, the author treats them as a certain “register”, which also resonates in other folksongs and folk narratives, likewise being reflected by some circumstances in the life of their performers, such as widowhood, orphanage, singleness, grievance, and general misery. These are certain “ballad-like notes” in the performers’ lives. Therefore, the author views ballads and other folksongs from a special perspective, attempting to “insert” them into the everyday circumstances of the singers, weaving them together with the biographical facts of the performers or taking into consideration other relevant data. In other words, the authors attempts to broaden the scope of the ballad research by including the life stories of the performers, or at least fragments of these stories. However, although such terms as autobiographical narratives or life stories appear in the article, such personal experience narratives as those common in the modern folklore research that have become subject to analysis for several decades already, do not and even cannot emerge in this study. It is precisely because the legacy of all the performers introduced in this article comes from the second half of the 20th century (a little – also from the first half of it). At that time folklore collectors paid little attention to the life stories of the singers or storytellers, normally noting down only the most essential personal information. Only rarely more extensive autobiographical data supplied by the informants themselves are available. The main subject of the current study comprises mostly such fragmented and scarce material, or even separate facts, carefully picked out from the collectors’ remarks, memoires, and (auto) biographies. The folk singers mentioned in this article belong to the generation born approximately at the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries, which grew up and learned the folksongs in the period of existence of the first independent Lithuanian Republic. Almost all of them lived in the so-called Vilnius Region, which at that time belonged to Poland. The majority of these performers are inhabitants of the southern part of the Vilnius Region, or Dzūkija. In terms of contextuality, all kinds of data regarding the “actual” context of the folklore pieces are important to their perception. By presenting biographical facts of the singers, the aim is not creating their exhaustive portraits, but rather viewing the folksongs in the light of the certain events from the lives of their performers. The author concludes that experience and memory of those events is able to alter the perception of the ballads. More broadly, this is the possible contemporary context of the ballads that has reached our times, enabling us to understand them better.

Résumé :
SCORAD The aim of the study was to assess the relationship of the clinical manifestations of moderate atopic dermatitis (AD) with the cytokine blood profile, psycho-neuro-hormonal status and patient’s quality of life. The study included 124 patients with AD (61 men and 63 women) aged 18 to 40 years. The control group consisted of 30 healthy individuals. The SCORAD index in patients was 39.8 ± 3.25 points, which corresponds to the moderate form of AD, and the value of the dermatological index of quality of life (DQL), equal to 23.2 ± 5.1 points, indicated its low level. As a result of the correlation analysis, it was established that there was a direct relationship of average strength between the SCORAD index and the levels of circulating blood cytokines (IL-1β, IL-4, IL-10, IL-13), the severity of personal and reactive anxiety and the quality of life of patients according to the DQL index. A weak direct link was found with the levels of IgE, INF-γ, ACTH, cortisol and alexithymia. An inverse correlation of the mild AD clinical manifestations was found with the level of β-endorphin in the blood. Thus, patients with moderate AD are characterized by an increase of antibodies of the IgE class, cytokines (IL-1β, IL-4, IL-10 IL-13, INFγ), reflecting the activity of the inflammatory process, as well as increased activity of hypothalamic-pituitary hormones axes (ACTH, cortisol), a decrease in the level of endogenous β-endorphin, an increase in the levels of personal, reactive anxiety and alexithymia, the severity of which correlates with the value of the SCORAD index

Often the setting of a novel can be looked at as a minor portion of a work. However, with Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles 1892 landscapes seem to be close to the main character, Tess. The story is about a teenage girl who experiences life in six different places; Marlott, Trantridge, Talbothays, Wellbridge, Flintcomb-Ash and Stonehenge. Each location shows a phase in her life and has a great impact on her in different ways. They allow the reader to understand her feeling and emotions at the time. This research examines Hardy’s use of setting and its reflection on the main character in order to show how the two are related together.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is fast becoming the most common liver disease globally and parallels rising obesity rates. The developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis have linked alterations in the early life environment to an increased risk of metabolic disorders in later life. Altered early life nutrition, in addition to increasing risk for the development of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease in offspring, is now associated with an increased risk for the development of NAFLD. This review summarizes emerging research on the developmental programming of NAFLD by both maternal obesity and undernutrition with a particular focus on the possible mechanisms underlying the development of hepatic dysfunction and potential strategies for intervention.

The shadowy figure of Pyrrho has been intriguing modern scholars ever since the outlines of his thought were rediscovered in the sixteenth century, most notably by Michel de Montaigne. The academic approach to the Pyrrhonian legacy has been complicated, however, not only by the difficulties of reconstructing Pyrrho’s philosophy from particularly fragmentary evidence, but also by the fact that it was not conceived as an academic exercise, but rather as a practical guide to life—or as a Taoist or Buddhist might put it, a Way or Path. The analogies with Eastern teachings should not be taken too far, of course, as if Pyrrho had been literally a Buddhist, let alone a practitioner of Zen; but the parallels are still helpful for “untangling the tangle” and making more vivid and credible a philosophical way of life that was by no means dull and disengaged, as it has sometimes been understood, but on the contrary, loving and joyfully equanimous.

Here the authors point to parallels between nineteenth-century records of San life and beliefs and twentieth-century San ethnography from the Kalahari Desert in order to argue that this cultural practice was shared by these two geographically and chronologically distant groups. More significantly, it is suggested that these ethnographic parallels allow a clearer understanding of the religious and ritual practices depicted in the southern San rock art images.

AbstractThe article tries to demonstrate the leading theological ideas underlying several statements of the first Christian emperor. Sources were drawn from the Constantinian legislation and the direct quotations of Constantine from the texts of Eusebius, omitting the often strange interpretations of this churchfather. There are seven parallels between Constantine's laws and the letters of the apostle Paul, three of them evident: 1. Sunday as a day of rest corresponds to Constantine's title “fundator quietis” and coins with the inscription “beata tranquillitas” (cf. 1 Tim 2,2). 2. The laws on slavery, especially the release of slaves “in ecclesiae gremio” (cf. letter to Philemon, 1 Cor 7,21 etc.) 3. The episcopal court “audientia episcopalis” (cf. 1Cor 6, 1-8). Four other parallels between the apostle's life and the life of Constantine are discussed. Finally, all the western theologians and bishops behind Constantine in the years after 310 will be introduced.

There have been a variety of Western explanations for the Qi of traditional Chinese medicine, but all have essentially had to compromise between expression of energy, matter and flow. The author suggests that a non-linear, fractal approach, similar to that of Chaos theory, offers a tool to understand Qi; the yin-yang and five phases theories of Chinese philosophy can be regarded as fractals. Qi, as the “net of life”, can also be looked on as an information network with close parallels to the computer-based web of the internet. This article therefore suggests a new Western definition of Qi, proposing that: “The Qi of Chinese medicine is inter-cellular information communicated within the body: information which enables all bodily functions and is a key component in regulation”. Referring to Qi as information offers the chance to integrate Chinese medical philosophy with current biological research on cellular communication.

Microbial molecular biology has traditionally used very reductionist approaches; for example, find a gene of interest, clone it or knock it out and see if you can detect a phenotype. The genomics era has opened up the possibility of analysing microbes and communities at a systems level by combining high-throughput experimental data from genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and phenomic techniques. This parallels earlier reductionist approaches by going from DNA to RNA to protein to phenotype, albeit on a global rather than individual gene scale.

Résumé :
A central concern of many theorists of later life has been to elucidate the processes which shape the marginalisation and relative disadvantage of older people in contemporary society. This concern parallels a current argument within sociological theorising: that life course stage and generational location constitute increasingly important dimensions of social difference and inequality. It is an argument of the paper that many current approaches operate with metaphors of society which ultimately locate those in later life at the margins by virtue of the theoretical terms being used. Too much has been claimed for life course-based divisions and too little has been claimed in respect of life course-related processes. The paper develops an alternative, moral economy, perspective with the aim of furthering analysis of the social organisation of life course-related rights, claims and obligations and their relationship to lifetime inequalities across the population. Such an approach offers a resourceful framework both for interrogating the diverse circumstances and experiences of those in later life, and for conceptualising social inequality and its reproduction.

Cultural memory represents the collective perceptions and creations of the distant past. Such collective memories are best documented and secured in Literature. What matters is not the real facts but rather the consensus of conventions shared by both the cultural history and the literary creator. However, literary narratives do not always give a compilation of such memories under a single wrap. It is on this distinctive point that Jakkana stands out in eternalising cultural memory. BasavarajNaikar’s novella, Jakkanna is the retelling of the life and history of the AmarsilpiJakkannacharya, the famed architect of the Hoysala dynasty. The plot is replete with events that have been happening from the ancient times. Parallels of such incidents that have endured to the modern times can be drawn from the two great epics and other ancient Indian philosophy and literatures. Résumé :
The paper focuses on the identification and description of text-building and meaning-forming (world-modelling, conceptual) metaphorical fields in V. Kaverin’s novel "The Two Captains". The metaphorical field is viewed as a hierarchical structure. The core zone is comprised of the conceptual metaphor "life/world – creativity"; the centre zone includes metaphors extending the core metaphor, in the first place, the metaphors "book of life/life – book" and "world – theatre" (read life, a page of life, the main character and others). The linguistic units which are used simultaneously in their literal and figurative meanings (history) constitute the periphery zone. The world-modelling metaphor forms a system of "figurative parallels" in the novel. Due to this, the form of a trope can vary though its stable semantic significance remains unchanged. "Figurative" parallels include cover not only tropes, but also words in their literal meaning. Owing to continuous repetitions and associative connections with metaphorical contexts, such words support and expand the sphere of influence of extended metaphors. Life as such is perceived in the novel as creative work harmonizing reality due to the expansion of the metaphor scope with the help of intertextual inclusions (The world is a theatre, people are actors and others) and as a result of the reconceptualization of the metaphors theatre, game. They change their negative connotation ("acting") to positive ("creativity"). The metaphors (book of life –) theatre and (book of life –) fairytale receive the additional meaningful connotations "realisation of a dream, fulfilment of passionate desires". Although the subject and image of the metaphors included in the metaphorical field differ, the seme ‘creativity’ enters the comparison feature of each of them.
