Bavaeva, Ol'ga. Metaphorical parallels of the neutral nomination "man" in modern English. ru : INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/1858259.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The monograph is devoted to a multidimensional analysis of metaphor in modern English as a parallel nomination that exists along with a neutral equivalent denoting a person. The problem of determining the essence of metaphorical names and their role in the language has attracted the attention of many foreign and domestic linguists on the material of various languages, but until now the fact of the parallel existence of metaphors and neutral nominations has not been emphasized. The research is in line with modern problems of linguistics related to the relationship of language, thinking and reflection of the surrounding reality. All these problems are integrated and resolved within the framework of linguistic semantics, in particular in the semantics of metaphor. Multilevel study of language material based on semantic, component, etymological analysis methods contributed to a systematic and comprehensive description of this most important part of the lexical system of the English language. Metaphorical parallels are considered as the result of the interaction of three complexes, which allows us to identify their associative-figurative base, as well as the types of metaphorical parallels, depending on the nature of the connection between direct and figurative meaning. Based on the analysis of various human character traits and behavior that evoke associations with animals, birds, objects, zoomorphic, artifact, somatic, floral and anthropomorphic metaphorical parallels of the neutral nomination "man" are distinguished. The social aspect of metaphorical parallels is also investigated as a reflection of gender, status and age characteristics of a person. It can be used in the training of philologists and translators when reading theoretical courses on lexicology, stylistics, word formation of the English language, as well as in practical classes, in lexicographic practice.

Résumé :
The first of these case study chapters in chapter 5 draws parallels between the economic framework designed by Treasury officials at home and ‘the new international economic architecture’ that Gordon Brown was keen to pursue abroad. This would provide the basis for a new approach to debt relief to reform the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries initiative. The new Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative would be conditional upon recipient countries meeting their obligations towards this new economic architecture, designed by Brown and based upon the principles of the ‘post-Washington Consensus’. This approach however, ran counter to many within civil society who viewed the issue of debt relief in ‘moral’ rather than simply ‘economic’ terms. In meeting with these different faith groups, NGOs and other debt activists, Brown certainly appeared sympathetic to such claims but the biblical language of forgiveness, justice and redemption that he used in speaking to these audiences differed from when he spoke in altogether more punitive terms to the international financial institutions. Here Brown spoke of the need for greater stability, demanded that indebted countries recognise their financial obligations, and urged greater surveillance by the International Monetary Fund of these countries national accounts.

Pattison, George. A Phenomenology of the Devout Life. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198813507.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
A Phenomenology of the Devout Life offers a phenomenological approach to the kind of Christian spirituality set out in François de Sales’s Introduction to the Devout Life but with parallels in other movements in both Protestant and Catholic spirituality. Situating the subject in relation to contemporary philosophical discussions of selfhood, the book arrives at a view of the devout self as essentially motivated by an affective orientation towards God that, via the experience of temptation and the practice of humility, subordinates reason to love and ends with self-annihilation. In this annihilated condition it becomes capable of a pure love of God, devoid of self-interest, willing only what God wills. These themes of pure love and nothingness are explored with particular reference to the writings of Archbishop Fénelon. Although this may suggest that the devout life is a kind of mysticism, it is argued that as a programme for practical life in the world it is distinct from experientially oriented kinds of mysticism, though sharing the ideal of union with God. As the first of a three-part Philosophy of Christian Life, the book ends by questioning what it could mean to insist that the source of the affective lure of devotion is God.

Johnson, Alice. Middle-Class Life in Victorian Belfast. Liverpool University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781789620313.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This book reconstructs the social world of upper middle-class Belfast during the time of the city’s greatest growth, between the 1830s and the 1880s. Using extensive primary material including personal correspondence, memoirs, diaries and newspapers, the author draws a rich portrait of Belfast society and explores both the public and inner lives of Victorian bourgeois families. Leading business families like the Corrys and the Workmans, alongside their professional counterparts, dominated Victorian Belfast’s civic affairs, taking pride in their locale and investing their time and money in improving it. This social group displayed a strong work ethic, a business-oriented attitude and religious commitment, and its female members led active lives in the domains of family, church and philanthropy. While the Belfast bourgeoisie had parallels with other British urban elites, they inhabited a unique place and time: ‘Linenopolis’ was the only industrial city in Ireland, a city that was neither fully Irish nor fully British, and at the very time that its industry boomed, an unusually violent form of sectarianism emerged. Middle-Class Life in Victorian Belfast provides a fresh examination of familiar themes such as civic activism, working lives, philanthropy, associational culture, evangelicalism, recreation, marriage and family life, and represents a substantial and important contribution to Irish social history.

Résumé :
This chapter turns to an examination of the quotidian elements of Binh’s life in Lisbon after the prince regent’s departure for Brazil in 1807. It begins with a discussion of the French occupation of Lisbon and the hardships that Binh witnessed and experienced, noting the numerous parallels he wrote of with his experience of civil war in Tonkin. It discusses the implications of the ruler’s departure and Binh’s being stranded in Portugal for how he understood his situation, arguing that Binh had now become a diasporic individual who thought about himself and his situation in distinctly different ways. The chapter then examines Binh’s writings about civic institutions and life in Lisbon in the early 19th century. It looks at his descriptions of libraries, of the postal service, the public lottery, public safety institutions, and medical care. It also looks in detail at his description of Portuguese food as he experienced it in his Oratorian dining hall. It concludes with a discussion of the key events in his later life: the restoration of the Jesuit order, his attempts to sail to Brazil to join the prince regent, and the deaths of his remaining companions.

Résumé :
This concluding chapter contains reflections on the parallels and intersections occurring throughout the major themes discussed in the book, the author's own life and that of Juliani's, Kenyan and U.S. popular culture, and of course, Christianity and hip hop. It also contains a brief survey of public opinion generated through social media regarding Juliani and his importance as a Christian hip hop artist. As a genre, hip hop combines the creativity of individual artists with the global relevance of its message. The same can be said of Christianity, where individual convictions resonate with the sensibilities of many. The chapter emphasizes the parallels and intersections between the two, before concluding with some final reflections on Juliani's impact as a Christian hip hop artist.

Résumé :
This chapter describes the international success of Bob Fosse’s film version of Cabaret in 1972, which kicked off the busiest, most productive decade of his career. The mood of the decade was reflected in both his life and his work. Fosse’s film jettisoned most of Cabaret’s score for numbers performed only onstage, thus refining the show’s use of performance to comment on dramatic reality. The hyperactive camerawork he was criticized for in Sweet Charity was refined and focused. Cabaret found parallels between the chaos and national crisis of identity in pre-Nazi Germany and contemporary anxieties over the continuing Vietnam War. Liza with a Z, starring Liza Minnelli and filmed by multiple cameras before a live audience in a Broadway theater, brought the kinetic energy of a live performance to this musical concert for television.

Résumé :
This book delves into the street-level experience of a set of African American and Latino teenagers and adults worried about or after them. It argues that the risks and opportunities associated with a poor urban neighborhood get filtered through smartphones and popular social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. The book shows that street life in Harlem plays out on and across the physical street and the digital street among youth, neighborhood adults, and the authorities. Each chapter examines the parallels, differences, and crossovers between these two layers of social life that bear out the “effects” of a neighborhood. From roughly five years of firsthand research as an outreach worker and in other roles in the community, the author illustrates the online and offline experiences of girls and boys of color coming of age in the shadow of the Harlem Children’s Zone and sweeping gentrification when social media came to permeate all aspects of life. The Digital Street addresses the role of communication and technology in the transformation of an urban neighborhood.

Résumé :
Graeme Gibson is a man of many talents. He curates an online museum of more than four hundred world music instruments, plays many of those instruments himself, designs and builds others, and conducts copious research on music traditions worldwide. Because “world music involves numerous traditions [up] to contemporary musics,” Graeme says, “I prefer to think of it as a spectrum that includes numerous genres.” He sees parallels between the spectrum of world music and the autism spectrum, where he states that he “also found that everyone is different from their case, to my case and so on. I do agree with the term ‘spectrum,’ ” he adds, “but we still have lots to learn.” Living with “classic autism” all his life, Graeme has faced formidable challenges. Yet he would not rid himself of his condition even given the chance: “Some symptoms I would like to have gone, like stress triggers and so on, but I fear in the end my music may be lost too.”
