Parallels between some of Rank's basic assumptions and those of ancient Indian thought are presented; both describe life as inherently painful, and both detail four very similar stages of development whereby a person may transcend a life of futility. Rank was well versed in philosophy, had ideas that parallel Hindu concepts, and chose to be cremated as is the Hindu tradition rather than be buried according to the prevailing custom.

Résumé :
Today the whole world celebrates a jubilee date — the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff. The Moscow Conservatory conducts monographic programs in all of its four halls, where all genres of the composer's legacy are presented: three operas are staged, all symphonic works are played, all romances are sung. This article is devoted to the creative interrelations and great friendship between S. V. Rachmaninoff and N. K. Medtner from the conservatory years. It focuses on the later work of the two composers, whose main genres are marked by stylistic parallels. This is about Russianness in their work, about the abiding longing for their beloved homeland, which nourished their inspiration until the last years of their lives. The stylistic comparisons are based on Rachmaninoff's "Symphonic Dances" and Medtner's Piano Quintet, Rachmaninoff's Fourth Piano Concerto and Medtner's Third Piano Ballade Concerto.

Résumé :
Inquiries concerning the nature of ‘biographical aging’ within the emerging field of ‘narrative gerontology’ have pointed to the need for a detailed consideration of the parallels between lived texts and literary ones. This article draws on a number of such parallels in order to outline what might be called apoeticsof aging. The central proposal is organized around 3 key concepts: narrative imagination, narrative identity, and narrative environment. The article concludes by speculating on some of the applications of the proposal in relation to growing old, as opposed to merely getting old. (Aging, Narrative, Gerontology, Poetics, Imagination)

Résumé :
The article presents the outlines of an integrative theory of meaning based on the concept of value, understood both as a biological and as a socio-cultural category, synthesizing ideas from evolutionary and developmental psychology, semiotics and cybernetics. The proposal distinguishes between four types of meaning systems, cue-based, associational, mimetic and symbolic, forming an evolutionary and epigenetic hierarchy. The theory is applied to phylogenetic and human ontogenetic development, pointing out significant parallels between the two processes, involving both continuity and discontinuity between the different levels. Since one of the basic tenets of the theory is that only living systems have intrinsic value, which is a necessary and sufficient condition for possessing the category meaning, negative implications are drawn for the meaning potential of (current) artificial systems.

Résumé :
A simple, heuristic formula with parallels to the Drake Equation is introduced to help focus discussion on open questions for the origins of life in a planetary context. This approach indicates a number of areas where quantitative progress can be made on parameter estimation for determining origins of life probabilities, based on constraints from Bayesian approaches. We discuss a variety of “microscale” factors and their role in determining “macroscale” abiogenesis probabilities on suitable planets. We also propose that impact ejecta exchange between planets with parallel chemistries and chemical evolution could in principle amplify the development of molecular complexity and abiogenesis probabilities. This amplification could be very significant, and both bias our conclusions about abiogenesis probabilities based on the Earth and provide a major source of variance in the probability of life arising in planetary systems. We use our heuristic formula to suggest a number of observational routes for improving constraints on origins of life probabilities.

Résumé :
If there is anything that challenges a discussion about architecture, it would be defining architecture. It is too broad a subject to construct any particular opinion and follow on, even while attempting to create an understanding of it at the level within graduate program. For me, in a way, architecture has constantly re-constructed its character and impression, and that by itself becomes its permanent trait vis-a-vis a given place and time. But, it also subtly shifts its prominence from being an object to being an experience, from being permanent to being ephemeral or from being a summation to being a subtraction. At this moment, my pursuit of understanding architecture lies in its subtraction or absence from a collage of variables that compose everyday life.Revisiting Bombay's busy streets after spending a considerable amount of time in the United States was a familiar experience for me, but it quickly helped me recognize and acknowledge constituents of my everyday living (associated with the events of the city) that were immediately subtracted while living in the West. An everyday experienceassociated with the city, like the vending stalls, convenience stores, songs, noise, people, etc. could not be found in cities I visited in the U.S. All these experiences such as eating at food stalls and having a cup of tea on the street-side, buying electronics and latest music albums from a make-shift stall assembled from pieces of wooden planks; or simply walking on the street-side as if it were never a side walk but a festival of attainable consumerism - collectively form an event that is embedded in Bombay's urbanism. Herein, I chose to get up-close with the actors and their created spaces and interview them in order to gain insights into the totality of making a living on the street-side. Additionally, in order to extend my knowledge of architecture, I designed a vending stall that both acknowledges the worlds of the street-side and vendors, even as it is informed by my training as an architect.I am challenged as a graduate student to consider architecture within the context of my everyday life. A whole new dimension of space (of ad-hoc and tactical nature) that has always been there, gradually and randomly shaping my relationship with the city's streets while challenging the order of the city. Although invisibly present all the time, this study has made me more aware of its influence. Hence, I have tried to readdress everyday life on the street-sides within the local and global settings of Bombay, studying events and people associated with it. Looking for a probable architecture on the street-sides of Bombay within the boundaries of the quotidian and the modem realities becomes my thesis.

Popovic, Marko. « Application of the Entropy Concept to Thermodynamics and Life Sciences : Evolution Parallels Thermodynamics, Cellulose Hydrolysis Thermodynamics, and Ordered and Disordered Vacancies Thermodynamics ». BYU ScholarsArchive, 2018. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6996.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Entropy, first introduced in thermodynamics, is used in a wide range of fields. Chapter 1 discusses some important theoretical and practical aspects of entropy: what is entropy, is it subjective or objective, and how to properly apply it to living organisms. Chapter 2 presents applications of entropy to evolution. Chapter 3 shows how cellulosic biofuel production can be improved. Chapter 4 shows how lattice vacancies influence the thermodynamic properties of materials. To determine the nature of thermodynamic entropy, Chapters 1 and 2 describe the roots, the conceptual history of entropy, as well as its path of development and application. From the viewpoint of physics, thermal entropy is a measure of useless energy stored in a system resulting from thermal motion of particles. Thermal entropy is a non-negative objective property. The negentropy concept, while mathematically correct, is physically misleading. This dissertation hypothesizes that concepts from thermodynamics and statistical mechanics can be used to define statistical measurements, similar to thermodynamic entropy, to summarize the convergence of processes driven by random inputs subject to deterministic constraints. A primary example discussed here is evolution in biological systems. As discussed in this dissertation, the first and second laws of thermodynamics do not translate directly into parallel laws for the biome. But, the fundamental principles on which thermodynamic entropy is based are also true for information. Based on these principles, it is shown that adaptation and evolution are stochastically deterministic. Chapter 3 discusses the hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose, which is a key reaction in renewable energy from biomass and in mineralization of soil organic matter to CO2. Conditional thermodynamic parameters, ΔhydG', ΔhydH', and ΔhydS', and equilibrium glucose concentrations are reported for the reaction C6H10O5(cellulose) + H2O(l) ⇄ C6H12O6(aq) as functions of temperature from 0 to 100°C. Activity coefficients of aqueous glucose solution were determined as a function of temperature. The results suggest that producing cellulosic biofuels at higher temperatures will result in higher conversion. Chapter 4 presents the data and a theory relating the linear term in the low temperature heat capacity to lattice vacancy concentration. The theory gives a quantitative result for disordered vacancies, but overestimates the contribution from ordered vacancies because ordering leads to a decreased influence of vacancies on heat capacity.

This research aims to answer three questions: why do we study an ancient reception of a text, in the 21st century ? Why do texts change their meanings throughout time ? How does this occur in our case study, Marius’ life? The methodologic approach is based on Jauss’ hermeneutic ; Gramsci’s cultural hegemony ; László’s construction of cultural identity ; Hardwick’s classical reception studies ; Lausberg’s literary communities. Moreover, I propose to define cultural communities. These communities reuse texts according to their own perception (voluntarily or involuntarily). So, I have selected a corpus of authors, linked to Plutarch and Marius, that have been catalogued by different cultural groups. The results show that under the Antonine dynasty Marius’ existence is almost forgotten, but the moral message of Life is systematically reused. The 3rd century exalts the authoritarian Marius, according to the political program of the Severan dynasty and military emperors. The 4th and 5th centuries reused Marius’ life in two ways : Christians describe a bad man, while pagans portray a hero, because the former want to condemn, and the latter want to glorify Roman tradition. These results have already answered the third question, on how meanings change. They allow us to answer the second question: why ? Because of the change of political aims. Finally, I can answer the first one: why is this important for us ? Because contemporary cultural communities reuse classical texts in the same ways as the ancient ones. So, this analysis of the past can explain the present too

Giroux, Chandra. « Morality in Plutarch's "Life of Cimon" ». Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/35198.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Understanding Plutarch’s Parallel Lives as a literary text is the focus of current scholarship. However, to this date, no one has looked at Plutarch’s Life of Cimon to analyze what it reveals about morality. My thesis endeavours to understand how Plutarch shapes Cimon as a literary character to bring to light the moral focus of this Life. It first investigates Plutarch’s life and the atmosphere in which he lived to understand what influenced his writing. Chapter One follows with a discussion of the composition of the Lives to understand how they are organized. The insistence on reading each book’s four parts (proem, Life 1, Life 2, synkrisis) to fully appreciate their moral relevance leads to Chapter Two, which dissects the main components of Plutarch’s moral mirror. This provides the necessary background needed for Chapter Three’s case study of Plutarch’s Cimon. Here, I argue that the main moral message contained therein is the importance of generosity and euergetism.

Résumé :
In Dostoevsky’s binary poetics, an opposition can be drawn between two fundamental stances – asceticism and incontinence. Ascetics adhere to an ethos of self-restraint in response to the desires of the flesh. Incontinents act spontaneously to gratify their desires. The current study draws an analogy between the behavior pattern of Dostoevsky’s self-denying intellectual heroes and that of exiled castrate (skoptsy) communities. Dostoevsky’s ascetics represent a cerebral mindset attracted to visions of social utopia; their intellectualizing detaches them from the life of the body and thus weirdly parallels the strictures of the skoptsy. An encounter between an ascetic and a prostitute serves as a central plot moment in works such as Crime and Punishment and Notes from Underground.

Résumé :
Human evolutionary demography has produced striking advances by applying the lens of fitness maximization to demographic data. This approach has strong parallels and links to life history theory, which concerns life patterns (e.g., age at first reproduction, age-specific fertility, and mortality) and behavioral ecology, which examines ecological and social influences on behavior. Both those fields focus primarily on non-human species. In addition to bringing clarifying fitness thinking into demography, human evolutionary demography is helping those of us in related fields to deeper understanding, partly because we know so much in detail about human lifetimes and their diversity. Evolutionary demographers often can bring multiple scales of analysis and multiple kinds of data to bear, enriching our broader understanding. In the past, those of us who studied non-humans have not typically been able to do this—but seeing the value, in at least some cases, for some species, today we may be able to do better. Finally, there is some potential for such a cross-disciplinary approach to have real, and real-world, value in terms of making sensible and realistic policy.

Résumé :
This chapter examines the biopolitical force of Augustan legislation vis-à-vis Ovid’s love poetry. Ovid, the ‘father of poems’, pits himself against the prince, the ‘Father of the Fatherland’ (pater patriae). Poet and emperor are involved in the production of normative discourse (legal or literary) that aims at generating biological or conceptual offspring. Their roles are both parallel and antithetical. Augustus’ laws aim to increase the population, while the elegiac legislator sees pregnancy as undermining attractiveness. Yet both poet and prince cast themselves as auctores, a word that can refer to a proposer of law, an author of poems, and a father. As auctores, Ovid and Augustus aspire to create a zone of indistinction between the biological and the political, between law and life. The capacity of Ovid’s art to become life parallels and contrasts with the power of Augustus’ laws to become flesh.

Résumé :
Sustainable Design includes a holistic approach that takes into account the entire life cycle of a product or system, from its origin to disposal. This approach has parallels with the knowledge and practices developed by traditional communities in Latin America. An example of this similarity is the use of native fibers in the manufacture of artifacts and traditional crafts. Among the botanical families used for such purposes, Bromeliaceae has been widely described in different locations. Given this situation, the present research aimed to carry out a bibliographical review of studies that present and describe the use of leaf fibers from different species of bromeliads by traditional communities in Latin America, highlighting their potential in strengthening the environmental, economic and social pillars of sustainable design and sustainable crafts. From the analysis of 19 selected works, several traditional uses of 17 species of Bromeliaceae were identified, with Aechmea magdalenae, Bromelia hieronymi and Neoglaziovia variegata being the most cited species. Through the investigation, it was possible to observe the great cultural and economic relevance of the use of bromeliad leaf fibers by traditional communities in Latin America, as an important example of biocultural diversity that must be preserved.

Résumé :
The article is devoted to the attribution of a golden finger ring with the image of a beardless nude youth with a diadem on his head and two wreaths – each in every hand, lowered down, on the bezel. The finger ring was found in 2018 in a room made of mud bricks (sanctu ary no. 835) under the stone foundation of a temple in Phanagoria. Both the shape of the ring and the style of the image on its bezel leave no doubt about the dating of the ring to the Late Archaic period, most likely around the turn of the 6th–5th centuries BC. The subject, presented on the ring’s bezel, is extremely rare and has practically no parallels in glyptics – in the items dated to the period under consideration, wreaths were most often depicted in the hands of Eros. Nevertheless, the parallels in the black-figure vase painting give reason to associate the image of a naked, beardless young man in a diadem, with wreaths in lowered hands with motives of a pederastic circle or those associated with a symposium, rather than sports. In such an interpreta tion of a Greek piece of jewelry there is, in fact, nothing surprising, except that new facets of the life of the Greek population of the Late Archaic Phanagoria are revealed to us (in the event that the first version of interpretation is correct).

Résumé :
In Summer 2013 the UK Supreme Court confirmed the existence of MOD's Duty of Care to its personnel in action. This was carefully expressed not as a limitation on operations but was aimed at the provision of suitable equipment along with the justification of the design and protection decisions taken in its procurement and maintenance, and in its operation. In response to this ruling the UK Naval Authority Group, under the authority of the Defence Maritime Regulator and the Royal Navy Survivability Strategy, developed the principles of Combat Safety, creating a survivability and personnel protection process that parallels traditional safety management, delivering an auditable record of the requirements development, design, construction and maintenance of survivable vessels and crew protection arrangements, as well as significantly improved guidance to warfighters on the survivability and personnel protection aspects of the ships in which they serve. The paper discusses the introduction of and background to the UK MOD’s developing Combat Safety process, which is aimed at minimising the risk to life of personnel in combat arising from hostile action. It discusses the relationship between Combat Safety, “traditional” safety management and survivability. The processes developed to manage Combat Safety for new construction and legacy vessels are discussed, and the development and content of the Combat Safety Summary are discussed, Finally the future RN development programme for Combat Safety is outlined.

Résumé :
Architecture culture inevitably revolves around the idea of leisure including its many connotations, such as recreation, reproduction, education, entertainment etc. As a concept, it not only corresponds to many spheres of everyday life, but also designates how time is being or should be spent via functions associated with architecture (such as leisure parks), through challenging architectural imagination (experimentation with pavilions or museums) as well as discourse built around particular examples of architecture. In the post-war world, leisure society was a prominent expression and had direct effects on architectural production through cultural centers, educational facilities and a vast range of public spaces that were meant to serve all individuals of society. On the other hand, leisure, arguably, is now being replaced by other ideas such as well-being or happiness. It is possible to observe a shift from a societal imaginary onto an individual one. This paper takes this shift in ideas around leisure and traces its possible extensions in the architectural culture via two trends in architecture: Megastructuralism and the tiny house movement. While the megastructralists of the 1960s imagined self-sufficient cities and communities, the tiny house movement of the past decade has been looking for self-sufficiency through singular houses/households. Departing from major texts such as Fumihiko Maki’s Collective Form (1964) or Reynar Banham’s Megastructures (1976) to old and new critical articles on the tiny house movement, this paper investigates references to leisure and ideas around it. It explores the tiny house movement and the megastructuralism; mapping their parallels in responding to crises of their era, their ways of experimenting and challenging architecture’s limits and finally aims to address what the two movements may display about one another as an attempt to enhance present architectural theory.

Résumé :
Design of a Steel Catenary Riser (SCR) requires the use of connection hardware to accommodate the bending moment that arises from the abrupt change in stiffness at the floater hang-off. Reliability of this connection hardware is of paramount importance in ultra deepwater applications (up to 3000m), especially those involving high pressure and temperature fluids. One type of such connection hardware is a metallic tapered stress joint. Because of its inherent density, strength, and stiffness, steel is not well suited for these applications due to the length and weight constraints. Titanium Gr. 29 (Ti), which is as strong as steel but lighter and more flexible, has been identified as a good material candidate for a tapered stress joint. The required length (∼40ft) and thickness (∼3.5in.) of the Titanium Stress Joint (TSJ) cannot be fabricated as a single piece due to forging size limitations. Thus, an intermediate girth weld becomes necessary. The fracture and fatigue performances in the presence of the external seawater and cathodic protection (CP) and the internal sour production with galvanic effects between the Ti and steel must be assessed to verify the service life of the stress joint. ExxonMobil has developed and initiated a Joint Industry Project to fully address the fracture and fatigue qualification of titanium welds. In particular, the project plans to establish a robust methodology for the future qualification of TSJs that parallels, to the extent possible, the qualification process currently used for SCRs. This paper discusses the primary aspects of the titanium weld qualification: (1) selection of test specimens, (2) load frequency effects on initiation and propagation lives, (3) environmental assisted cracking due to hydride formation under cathodic and galvanic conditions, (4) full-thickness small-scale fatigue, (5) size effect on fatigue, and (6) weld inspection.

Résumé :
The Second West-East Gas Pipeline (2nd WEP) Project, consisting of one trunk line and eight branches, has a total length of 8,704 km and a designed annual transportation capacity of 30 billion cubic meters. The outside diameter of trunk line is 1,219 mm (48″). According to the plan, 2nd WEP will parallel with several existing or planning pipelines in long distance, some will even be located in rocky area. However, there are neither requirements of separation distance nor other related provisions of parallel pipelines in current domestic regulation and codes in China. It is an urgent critical problem to reasonably design, construct and operate multiple pipelines in same corridor. In order to design 2nd WEP in parallel with other existing and planning pipelines, a series of technical studies were carried out. This paper describes the main work. First of all is the literature review, including regulation, standards, codes etc. and similar work on parallel pipelines and applicable practices in other countries. Second, for the primary concern-separation distance, the main factors are considered. Then, the computational results of some 2nd WEP paralleling with other pipelines based on the impact of the failure of natural gas pipeline to adjacent pipelines are introduced. Third, the experiments and some related researches in rocky areas where 2nd WEP parallels with existing pipelines are introduced. Forth, analysis of Direct Current (DC) stray current interference resulted from Cathodic Protection (CP) Systems located along each parallel pipeline is briefly introduced. Then is the mitigation and monitoring requirements for unbounded (separate) CP system. According to the works above together with engineering practices as well as experiences, the design guideline of parallel pipelines is established. When 2nd WEP parallels with other pipelines not locating in rocky areas, the reasonable separation distance is based on integrated considerations of adjacent pipeline’s survival in the event of failure of gas transmission pipeline, easiness to construct, less CP interferences, adequate space requirements for maintenance and repair. For other paralleling cases, engineering requirements are established separately. This guideline has been applied in design of parallel pipelines and provides management requirements for future operation in 2nd WEP project.

Résumé :
Prognostics and health management (PHM) frameworks are widely used in engineered systems, such as manufacturing equipment, aircraft, and vehicles, to improve reliability, maintainability, and safety. Prognostic information for impending failures and remaining useful life is essential to inform decision-making by enabling cost versus risk estimates of maintenance actions. These estimates are generally provided by physics-based or data-driven models developed on historical information. Although current models provide some predictive capabilities, the ability to represent individualized dynamic factors that affect system health is limited. To address these shortcomings, we examine the biological phenomenon of epigenetics. Epigenetics provides insight into how environmental factors affect genetic expression in an organism, providing system health information that can be useful for predictions of future state. The means by which environmental factors influence epigenetic modifications leading to observable traits can be correlated to circumstances affecting system health. In this paper, we investigate the general parallels between the biological effects of epigenetic changes on cellular DNA to the influences leading to either system degradation and compromise, or improved system health. We also review a variety of epigenetic computational models and concepts, and present a general modeling framework to support adaptive system prognostics.

Résumé :
The French composer Francis Poulenc had a profound admiration and empathy for the writings of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. That empathy was rooted in shared aspects of the artistic temperament of the two figures but was also undoubtedly reinforced by Poulenc’s fellow-feeling on a human level. As someone who wrestled with his own homosexuality and who kept his orientation and his relationships apart from his public persona, Poulenc would have felt an instinctive affinity for a figure who endured similar internal conflicts but who, especially in his later life and poetry, was more open about his sexuality. Lorca paid a heavy price for this refusal to dissimulate; his arrest in August 1936 and his assassination the following day, probably by Nationalist militia, was accompanied by taunts from his killers about his sexuality. Everything about the Spanish poet’s life, his artistic affinities, his personal predilections and even the relationship between these and his death made him someone to whom Poulenc would be naturally drawn and whose untimely demise he would feel keenly and might wish to commemorate musically. Starting with the death of both his parents while he was still in his teens, reinforced by the sudden loss in 1930 of an especially close friend, confidante and kindred spirit, and continuing throughout the remainder of his life with the periodic loss of close friends, companions and fellow-artists, Poulenc’s life was marked by a succession of bereavements. Significantly, many of the dedications that head up his compositions are ‘to the memory of’ the individual named. As Poulenc grew older, and the list of those whom he had outlived lengthened inexorably, his natural tendency towards the nostalgic and the elegiac fused with a growing sense of what might be termed a ‘survivor’s anguish’, part of which he sublimated into his musical works. It should therefore come as no surprise that, during the 1940s, and in fulfilment of a desire that he had felt since the poet’s death, he should turn to Lorca for inspiration and, in the process, attempt his own act of homage in two separate works: the Violin Sonata and the ‘Trois Chansons de Federico García Lorca’. This exposition attempts to unfold aspects of the two men’s aesthetic pre-occupations and to show how the parallels uncovered cast reciprocal light upon their respective approaches to the creative process. It also examines the network of enfolded associations, musical and autobiographical, which link Poulenc’s two compositions commemorating Lorca, not only to one another but also to a wider circle of the composer’s works, especially his cycle setting poems of Guillaume Apollinaire: ‘Calligrammes’. Composed a year after the ‘Trois Chansons de Federico García Lorca’, this intricately wrought collection of seven mélodies, which Poulenc saw as the culmination of an intensive phase in his activity in this genre, revisits some of ‘unheard voices’ and ‘unseen shadows’ enfolded in its predecessor. It may be viewed, in part, as an attempt to bring to fuller resolution the veiled but keenly-felt anguish invoked by these paradoxical properties.

Résumé :
The goals of this research program were to: (1) assess the mechanical and fracture properties of spiral-welded pipe, (2) characterize the crack initiation and maximum load carrying capacity, and (3) determine stress magnification factors for helical flaws. Flattened-strap tensile tests, Charpy V-notch (CVN) tests, and JIC fracture toughness tests were performed to meet the first objective. Results showed that tensile properties are independent of specimen orientation, while CVN data varied by as much as 3 to 1 for parallel vs. transverse machined specimens. Full-scale pipe fracture experiments were conducted to meet the second and third objectives. Results showed that crack initiation was parallel to the rolling direction regardless of the principle stress direction. Stress magnification factors were also developed for through-wall and surface cracks under longitudinal and circumferential stresses. These factors allow design engineers to predict the critical bending stress, circumferential stress, and flaw size for spiral-welded pipe.

Résumé :
Many of the most pressing conflicts across sub-Saharan Africa today—including violent extremism, sexual and gender-based violence, pastoralist/farmer conflicts, and criminal banditry—are shaped by local, community-level drivers. Despite these local drivers, however, international peacebuilding approaches often ignore or neglect bottom-up, grassroots strategies for addressing them. Often, international efforts to contribute to the prevention and management of local conflicts depend heavily on large-scale, expensive, and external interventions like peacekeepers, while under-investing in or by-passing traditional/customary mechanisms and resources that uphold locally defined values of peace, tolerance, solidarity, and respect. Recognizing that these traditional and customary practices themselves sometimes have their own legacies of violence and inequality, this policy note emphasizes the possibility of combining aspects of traditional peacebuilding mechanisms with international conflict management approaches to harness the benefits of both.

Résumé :
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings. Underpinning all five areas is the recognition that human narratives remain crucial for ensuring the widest access to our shared past. There is no wish to see political and economic narratives abandoned but the need is recognised for there to be an expansion to more social narratives to fully explore the potential of the diverse evidence base. The questions that can be asked are here framed in a national context but they need to be supported and improved a) by the development of regional research frameworks, and b) by an enhanced study of Scotland’s international context through time. 1. From North Britain to the Idea of Scotland: Understanding why, where and how ‘Scotland’ emerges provides a focal point of research. Investigating state formation requires work from Medieval Scotland: a future for its past ii a variety of sources, exploring the relationships between centres of consumption - royal, ecclesiastical and urban - and their hinterlands. Working from site-specific work to regional analysis, researchers can explore how what would become ‘Scotland’ came to be, and whence sprang its inspiration. 2. Lifestyles and Living Spaces: Holistic approaches to exploring medieval settlement should be promoted, combining landscape studies with artefactual, environmental, and documentary work. Understanding the role of individual sites within wider local, regional and national settlement systems should be promoted, and chronological frameworks developed to chart the changing nature of Medieval settlement. 3. Mentalities: The holistic understanding of medieval belief (particularly, but not exclusively, in its early medieval or early historic phase) needs to broaden its contextual understanding with reference to prehistoric or inherited belief systems and frames of reference. Collaborative approaches should draw on international parallels and analogues in pursuit of defining and contrasting local or regional belief systems through integrated studies of portable material culture, monumentality and landscape. 4. Empowerment: Revisiting museum collections and renewing the study of newly retrieved artefacts is vital to a broader understanding of the dynamics of writing within society. Text needs to be seen less as a metaphor and more as a technological and social innovation in material culture which will help the understanding of it as an experienced, imaginatively rich reality of life. In archaeological terms, the study of the relatively neglected cultural areas of sensory perception, memory, learning and play needs to be promoted to enrich the understanding of past social behaviours. 5. Parameters: Multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and cross-sector approaches should be encouraged in order to release the research potential of all sectors of archaeology. Creative solutions should be sought to the challenges of transmitting the importance of archaeological work and conserving the resource for current and future research.
