Is there evidence of systematic, slow changes that might be caused by the changes in mean density during passage across the Instability Strip?The data: O – C diagrams for 67 RR Lyrae stars and Cepheids by student assistants at the Maria Mitchell Observatory, and for 88 northern Cepheids by L. SzabadosThe method: Least-squares lines and parabolae (unless the O – C diagram shows that the period has changed in both directions). The rate of change of period comes from the coefficient of the square term in the parabola. The principal feature of these analyses is that the rate is taken to be non-zero only if the parabola is significantly better than the linear fit, at the 2-sigma level.

In the Fock space of two Bose operators all the irreducible representations of both the 1-D para-Bose and para-Fermi oscillators are constructed. Bose states of the form |p + k–1, kn > (|p – k, kn), n = 1,2, are shown to stand for states of k-parabosons (k-parafermions) of order p. For n = 1 or n = 2 the various subspaces may be visualized in the plane as either straight-lines or parabolae, respectively.

Functional studies of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived cardiomyocytes (hCMs) under different gravity conditions contribute to aerospace medical research. To study the effects of altered gravity on hCMs, we exposed them to acute hypergravity and microgravity phases in the presence and absence of the β-adrenoceptor isoprenalin (ISO), L-type Ca2+ channel (LTCC) agonist Bay-K8644, or LTCC blocker nifedipine, and monitored their beating rate (BR). These logistically demanding experiments were executed during the 66th Parabolic Flight Campaign of the European Space Agency. The hCM cultures were exposed to 31 alternating hypergravity, microgravity, and hypergravity phases, each lasting 20–22 s. During the parabolic flight experiment, BR and cell viability were monitored using the xCELLigence real-time cell analyzer Cardio Instrument®. Corresponding experiments were performed on the ground (1 g), using an identical set-up. Our results showed that BR continuously increased during the parabolic flight, reaching a 40% maximal increase after 15 parabolas, compared with the pre-parabolic (1 g) phase. However, in the presence of the LTCC blocker nifedipine, no change in BR was observed, even after 31 parabolas. We surmise that the parabola-mediated increase in BR was induced by the LTCC blocker. Moreover, the increase in BR induced by ISO and Bay-K8644 during the pre-parabola phase was further elevated by 20% after 25 parabolas. This additional effect reflects the positive impact of the parabolas in the absence of both agonists. Our study suggests that acute alterations of gravity significantly increase the BR of hCMs via the LTCC.

Multiple suppression using a variant of the Radon transform is discussed. This transform differs from the classical Radon transform in that the integration surfaces are hyperbolic rather than planar. This specific hyperbolic surface is equivalent to parabolae in terms of computational expense but more accurately distinguishes multiples from primary reflections. The forward transform separates seismic arrivals by their differences in traveltime moveout. Multiples can be suppressed by an inverse transform of only part of the data. Examples show that multiples are effectively attenuated in prestack and stacked seismograms.

Many consumer products, such as within the computer areas, computer graphics, digital signal processing, communication systems, robotics, navigation, astrophysics, fluid physics, etc. are searching for high computational performance as a consequence of increasingly more advanced algorithms in these applications. Until recently the down scaling of the hardware technology has been able to fulfill these higher demands from the more advanced algorithms with higher clock rates on the chips. This that the development of hardware technology performance has stagnated has moved the interest more over to implementation of algorithms in hardware. Especially within wireless communication the desire for higher transmission rates has increased the interest for algorithm implementation methodologies. The scope of this thesis is mainly on the developed methodology of parabolic synthesis. The parabolic synthesis methodology is a methodology for implementing approximations of unary functions in hardware. The methodology is described with the criteria's that have to be fulfilled to perform an approximation on a unary function. The hardware architecture of the methodology is described and to this a special hardware that performs the squaring operation. The outcome of the presented research is a novel methodology for implementing approximations of unary functions such as trigonometric functions, logarithmic functions, as well as square root and division functions etc. The architecture of the processing part automatically gives a high degree of parallelism. The methodology is founded on operations that are simple to implement in hardware such as addition, shifts, multiplication, contributes to that the implementation in hardware is simple to perform. The hardware architecture is characterized by a high degree of parallelism that gives a short critical path and fast computation. The structure of the methodology will also assure an area efficient hardware implementation.

The present study details an investigation into the provision of opportunities for secondary school students to develop an understanding of visual aesthetics by manipulating a single mathematical curve: the parabola. The study documents the establishment of a robust cross-curricular relationship between Mathematics and Visual Design by providing a pedagogical model for learning that relies on the conduit between the two subject areas being explicitly linked. Although the central concept is the marriage of disparate themes, it was operationalised by the development and delivery of activities sequenced to grow appreciation and understanding of the links between unrelated curricula. While this account aims to foster cross-curricular discourse and action, the product output simultaneously provided avenues for the presentation and exhibition of student work; a gallery of which is included in the study. Documenting the inter-disciplinary approach to learning and teaching has resulted in an exploration of the complexities we employ to discover meaning in a range of contexts not singularly reliant on art or language. A convergence is presented in that mathematical rules unite with the rules of art and design in the attempt to project new concepts into new situations where a space for originality exists. Here, the students have been encouraged to imagine new, effective ways of bringing ideas to form (Richmond, 2009). Naturally, developing explicit appreciation/action situations required critical and creative thinking to coincide with lateral and literal approaches to gaining knowledge and understanding of aesthetics. The study presents a reflexive account of the delivery of coursework entitled The Possibilities of the Parabola, from concept to completion.

Im ersten Teil wird eine neue Konstruktion der parabolischen Induktion für pro-p Iwahori-Heckemoduln gegeben. Dabei taucht eine neue Klasse von Algebren auf, die in gewisser Weise als Interpolation zwischen der pro-p Iwahori-Heckealgebra einer p-adischen reduktiven Gruppe $G$ und derjenigen einer Leviuntergruppe $M$ von $G$ gedacht werden kann. Für diese Algebren wird ein Induktionsfunktor definiert und eine Transitivitätseigenschaft bewiesen. Dies liefert einen neuen Beweis für die Transitivität der parabolischen Induktion für Moduln über der pro-p Iwahori-Heckealgebra. Ferner wird eine Funktion auf einer parabolischen Untergruppe untersucht, die als Werte nur p-Potenzen annimmt. Es wird gezeigt, dass sie eine Funktion auf der (pro-p) Iwahori-Weylgruppe von $M$ definiert, und dass die so definierte Funktion monoton steigend bzgl. der Bruhat-Ordnung ist und einen Vergleich der Längenfunktionen zwischen der Iwahori-Weylgruppe von $M$ und derjenigen der Iwahori-Weylgruppe von $G$ erlaubt. Im zweiten Teil wird ein allgemeiner Zerlegungssatz für Polynome über der sphärischen (parahorischen) Heckealgebra einer p-adischen reduktiven Gruppe $G$ bewiesen. Diese Zerlegung findet über einer parabolischen Heckealgebra statt, die die Heckealgebra von $G$ enthält. Für den Beweis des Zerlegungssatzes wird vorausgesetzt, dass die gewählte parabolische Untergruppe in einer nichtstumpfen enthalten ist. Des Weiteren werden die nichtstumpfen parabolischen Untergruppen von $G$ klassifiziert.
The first part deals with a new construction of parabolic induction for modules over the pro-p Iwahori-Hecke algebra. This construction exhibits a new class of algebras that can be thought of as an interpolation between the pro-p Iwahori-Hecke algebra of a p-adic reductive group $G$ and the corresponding algebra of a Levi subgroup $M$ of $G$. For these algebras we define a new induction functor and prove a transitivity property. This gives a new proof of the transitivity of parabolic induction for modules over the pro-p Iwahori-Hecke algebra. Further, a function on a parabolic subgroup with p-power values is studied. We show that it induces a function on the (pro-p) Iwahori-Weyl group of $M$, that it is monotonically increasing with respect to the Bruhat order, and that it allows to compare the length function on the Iwahori-Weyl group of $M$ with the one on the Iwahori-Weyl group of $G$. In the second part a general decomposition theorem for polynomials over the spherical (parahoric) Hecke algebra of a p-adic reductive group $G$ is proved. The proof requires that the chosen parabolic subgroup is contained in a non-obtuse one. Moreover, we give a classification of non-obtuse parabolic subgroups of $G$.

L’intento del presente lavoro è duplice: sottolineare come Aleksandra Ekster abbia rivestito un ruolo di trait d’union tra la nascente avanguardia russa e l’ambiente artistico francese nei primi anni ’10 del XX secolo e come l’innovativo impiego del colore, su una superficie bidimensionale come la tela e in uno spazio tridimensionale come la scena teatrale, sia la chiave di lettura privilegiata attraverso cui prendere in esame l’attività di questa poliedrica artista. La ricerca si articola in sei capitoli. I – vengono analizzati i primi esperimenti pittorici della Ekster, che risentono dell’influenza dell’arte popolare ucraina da una parte e degli studi cezanniani sul rapporto tra colore e forma dall’altra. II – ci si concentra sul primo soggiorno parigino della Ekster, dove l’artista, all’inizio respinta poiché troppo esuberante nel colore, trova una strada autonoma tra le voci del cubismo francese, ma anche del futurismo italiano. III – si cerca di porre in risalto come la Ekster interagisca con il cubo-futurismo, senza essere ascritta specificamente né all'uno né all'altro movimento. IV - si analizza come la Ekster riesca, allo scoppio della prima guerra mondiale, a dare comunque il suo originale contributo alle mostre dell'avanguardia russa, e a confrontarsi con il suprematismo di Malevič, ancora in nome del colore. V – si cerca di dimostrare come la Ekster scommetta sul colore anche nell’attività di scenografa: il colore disegna i corpi degli attori e conferisce loro dinamicità. VI – nell’ultima parte si vuole porre in evidenza come il colore abbia incontrato la fabbricazione di abiti e la propaganda: alla Ekster viene affidato il compito di veicolare il dinamismo dell’attività di propaganda attraverso le sue capacità cromatiche.

In this thesis we calculate the parabolic Chern character of a bundle with locally abelian parabolic structure on a smooth strict normal crossings divisor, using the definition in terms of Deligne-Mumford stacks. We obtain explicit formulas for ch_1, ch_2 and ch_3, and verify that these correspond to the formulas given by Borne for ch_1 and Mochizuki for ch_2. The second part of the thesis we take D subset in X is a curve with multiple points in a surface, a parabolic bundle defined on (X, D) away from the singularities can be extended in several ways to a parabolic bundle on a resolution of singularities. We investigate the possible parabolic Chern classes for these extensions.

The Magellan radar imager detected approximately 60 dark (i.e. low backscatter cross section) parabola-shaped features on the surface of Venus; each parabola is oriented with the open end toward the west and envelopes an impact crater near its "focus." In this thesis, I use a model of parabola formation to fit the 58 Venusian parabolas observed to date, as well as 9 circular features that are similar to the parabolas. I achieve good results for ∼65% of the 41 parabolas that meet the conditions for the model to apply. As a result of modeling the parabolas, I derive a quantitative description of the distribution of small (∼1 cm to ∼1 μm in diameter) impact ejecta over a planetary surface. My results agree well with the distribution of fine impact ejecta derived for the Terrestrial impact crater Chicxulub. In addition, these results lead to a method for estimating the quantity of fine-grained material available on Venus for surface transport processes such as saltation.

Jag höll på att inledna med att jag är illojal mot mina medium. Men jag hejdar mig halvvägs, för jag har aldrig gjort några löften. Illojaliteten är inte riktad mot ett medium eller ett tema, utan mot en förväntan på en enhetlig praktik. Vems förväntan? Jag vet inte riktigt vem den tillhör men den har följt mig länge. Vad jag vet är att jag inte har någon lust att konstruera ett konstnärsskap ur en uppsättning handlingar som innehåller lika många olikheter som likheter eller vars likheter med varandra är sinsemellan väldigt olika. När jag tillåter mig att avstå från att formulera en enande tes undervilken mina arbeten ska vila blir det enklare att vara konsekvent och ärlig inom varje arbete. Så jag kommer att tillåta mig att avstå. Jag kommer skriva om saker jag har gjort, saker andra har gjort, tankar jag har tänkt och tankar andra har tänkt.

Parabolic concentrator mirrors are an important component of many solar energy systems, particularly solar mirror collectors. Precision parabolic mirrors are expensive to fabricate and to transport. Here, a new concept for designing and fabricating precision parabolic mirrors is presented. The mirror is formed from a thin flat very flexible metal sheet with a highly reflective surface. Attached to the rear surface of the mirror sheet is a backbone band whose figure is optimized to form the reflective sheet into a precision parabola when its two ends are pulled toward each other. An analytical model to optimize the shape of the band is presented. The validity of the concept is demonstrated using Finite Element Analysis and laboratory experiments. The concept would permit flat mirror elements to be easily fabricated and efficiently packaged and shipped to field sites and assembled into the parabolic trough concentrators with potentially substantial costs reductions compared with conventional methods.

Communication antennas, optical mirrors, solar/optical reflectors, etc. often have the shape of parabolic shells or shells of revolution, due to their required focusing, aiming, or reflecting performance. In this paper, the wireless control of free-floating flexible parabolic shells using discrete photostrictive actuators is investigated. Parabolic shell of revolution is considered to be one of the most difficult geometry among all shell and non-shell structures. Because of this, an approximate way to estimate the dynamic behavior and light-induced control forces of a photostrictive coupled parabolic shell is presented. Based on the approximate spherical model, the effects of actuator locations as well as membrane and bending components on the control action are analyzed. The results obtained indicate that the control forces are location dependent. It is also shown by analysis that the membrane control action is much more significant than the bending control action. The validation of the approximate model is done by comparing the light-induced control forces of the photostrictive coupled shells obtained by the approximate equivalent spherical shell model and those obtained by the parabolic shell model. From the comparison, it can be concluded that there is only a slight difference between a spherical shell and a parabola for surface with an F/D (focal length to diameter ratio) of 1.00 or larger.

This paper is devoted to geometric simulation of parabolic stream area in planar case. The stream is characterized by fuzziness of geometric parameters that is consequence of the technological parameters fuzziness. In this paper we consider the process of welding spark flying as a physical analogue of the parabolic stream. The method relies on consideration interval sets and combinatorial computing analyses of various geometric objects in planar case. In particular, this approach is used for parabola having interval numerical parameters. Various aspects of the parabolic stream such as shadow sub-areas and dangerous zones of the stream are discussed. We break up the area of the stream into interval closed sub-areas which correspond to interval physical parameters of metal drops. We also demonstrate that the most probable dangerous parts of welding protective suit can be discovered by developed model. The practical application of the method of geometric modeling of welding sparks makes it possible to determine the localized areas of the parts of a protective suit that need additional protection in terms of improving materials and design.
