Résumé :
Shale players have a love-hate relationship with water. It’s an essential ally going into downhole to help proliferate fractures in the subsurface and free up stuck hydrocarbons. It’s a parasite coming out - a briny byproduct that can easily outpace oil production from any given well. Likewise, operators must deal with water management on dual fronts. The first is sourcing the water to be used in the fracturing of the well. Second is finding the right solution for the flowback and formation water coming out of the well. Early on, the answer for the former was freshwater sources. However, once the strain set in from general scarcity, drought, environmental concerns or the like, industry started looking hard at the recycle and reuse of produced water - a solution where the problem becomes the answer. Water recycling rates vary widely between unconventional basins. For the domestic oil industry, data provider IHS Markit forecast in an April 2020 report the vast majority of wastewater leaving an oil field in 2022 will still not be recycled. It will instead be injected into disposal wells, which is currently the most common practice for produced water management. This option is costly and risky, especially for wells that are located some distance from the nearest disposal well. It has also come under increased scrutiny because of the potential effects of disposal well use on the surrounding area’s seismic activity. “Going back to the beginning of unconventional resource production, the focus was understandably on the water needed for drilling and completions,” Paola Perez-Pena, a principal researcher at IHS Markit, commented in an analysis. “Now that there is a considerable, established production, operators are realizing the extent to which produced water is not only a sizable matter, but an ongoing and essentially, perpetual one.” Produced water is a mix of the water pumped down the well to assist with fracturing plus residual drilling fluid and formation water. On average, with every barrel of oil produced in the US, more than 4 bbl of wastewater is produced, though that number varies from basin to basin. “With water, what you find is producers consider a number of different piping configurations, storage, and disposal well options, as well as reuse opportunities,” said John Walsh, principal technologist for Worley Advisian and author of the book, Produced Water. “There’s no one single strategy or approach that’s going to solve the water problem. There is no silver bullet.” According to an industry brief by Raymond James in July 2019, pre-pandemic US oilfield water production was already a whopping 50 million BWPD. For scale, this amount of water could cover more than 8,000 football fields with a foot of water, every day. The investment bank estimated just under half of the total produced water came from horizontal basins, despite making up close to 80% of onshore crude production. The report forecast that the total volume of produced water from major oil basins in the US could grow to more than 60 million BWPD by 2030 (Fig. 1).

Résumé :
The problem of stimulating play activity of preschoolers has been considered in the context of transforming a basic goal of play activity into subgoals, more meaningful for a child. There is a correlation between the ability of a preschooler to identify subgoals and the ability to perform conscious and purposeful behavior. The paper presents a step by step technique of stimulating play activity of preschoolers which corresponds to the components of PARLA method and includes: encouraging the diversity of contrived behavior - transforming a basic goal of play activity into subgoals – display of cognitive dissonance – continuing a game using cognitive activity of subjects of a play activity. The findings show that stimulating preschoolers’ activity through due reflection of purposeful behavior in game situations leads to practical skills of application of conscious behavior.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT Reduction in plant growth under salt stress is due, among other factors, to changes in photochemical efficiency and, consequently, in photosynthesis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of salt stress on the chlorophyll fluorescence variables in cultivars of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.). The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using a randomized block design in a 5 x 3 factorial scheme, corresponding to five basil cultivars (‘Grecco a Palla’, ‘Alfavaca Basilicão’, ‘Alfavaca Verde’, ‘Lemoncino’ and ‘Roxo’) and three salinity of the nutrient solution (2.0, 3.5 and 5.0 dS m-1), with three repetitions, and the experimental plot was represented by three pots containing 3.0 dm3 of coconut fiber. At the full flowering stage, plants were evaluated for chlorophyll fluorescence, when adapted to the dark, as well as under saturating light conditions. In general, there were changes in fluorescence variables only at salinity above 3.5 dS m-1. Fertigation using high-salinity water promotes strong changes in the chlorophyll a fluorescence of sensitive basil cultivars. The cultivars ‘Grecco a Palla’ and ‘Alfavaca Verde’ were little affected by the increase of salinity, being the most tolerant to salt stress. In the cultivars ‘Alfavaca Basilicão’, ‘Lemoncino’ and ‘Roxo’, chlorophyll fluorescence was strongly affected by salinity, being the most sensitive. The tolerance ranking based on chlorophyll fluorescence is: ‘Grecco a Palla’ = ‘Alfavaca Verde’ > ‘Alfavaca Basilicão’ > ‘Lemoncino’ > ‘Roxo’.

Résumé :
Considering the growing water crisis, using wastewater helps reduce the pressure on good-quality water consumption. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the growth, production, and essential oil content of Alfavaca Basilicão and Grecco a Palla basil genotypes with a DFT (deep flow technique) hydroponic system adapted to PVC tubes at different recirculation intervals of nutrient solutions prepared with treated domestic effluents. The experiment was performed in a greenhouse with Alfavaca Basilicão and Grecco a Palla basil genotypes analyzed individually. It was a completely randomized design with four replicates in a 2 x 3 factorial scheme: two types of water (public-supply water and wastewater) and three recirculation intervals of nutrient solutions (2, 4, and 6 hours). At 35 days after transplanting, the study evaluated plant height, stem diameter, shoot fresh mass, shoot dry mass, water consumption, water use efficiency, and essential oil content and yield. The types of water did not significantly influence the variables of growth, production, and essential oil content of the basil genotypes. Basil cultivation with the DFT system in tubes is technically feasible with nutrient solutions prepared with treated domestic effluents and recirculation every 2 and 6 hours for Grecco a Palla and Alfavaca Basilicão genotypes, respectively. The means of essential oil content were 1.6 and 1.7% (v/m) for Alfavaca Basilicão and Grecco a Palla genotypes, respectively.

Résumé :
Basil (Ocimum spp.) is an essential oil producing plant and it is used as a condiment for diferent foods, besides serving as raw material for medicinal purposes. This crop has also been showing great importance as an ornamental plant in recent years. However, basil lacks studies concerning its different usages with special regards to its ornamental potential. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluating the vegetative development and the ornamental potential of the basil cultivars ‘Grecco a Palla’ (O. minimum), ‘Alfavaca Basilicão Vermelho’ (O. basilicum), and ‘Thai Basil’ (O. basilicum), under protected cultivation. The following characteristics were evaluated: germination percentage, germination speed index, plant canopy diameter (cm), leaf and inflorescence length (cm), plant height (cm), and fresh and dry leaf mass (g). The ornamental potential was estimated based on visual evaluations of plant canopy volume; leaf shape, texture, size, and color; stem and flower color; and number of days to flowering. Cultivar ‘Thai Basil’ presented the highest leaf dry mass and ‘Grecco a Palla’ showed the highest germination speed index and seed germination percentage. All cultivars bloomed within 60 days after planting and exhibited color and brightness variability, which are desirable traits for a landscape composition. ‘Grecco a Palla’ stood out for its short and compact inflorescences, dwarf size and globular shape when grown as a potted plant. The studied cultivars demonstrated favorable characteristics for ornamental usage based on visual assessments.

Résumé :
In this paper we try to discover how a Russian philosopher Pavel Florensky defines and analyses the nature of words, sentences and concepts in order to represent the mechanism of human thinking. He accentuates the relation between individual and collective experience that both participate in the creation of concepts. We show that in his view word semantics is dynamic phenomenon because its basic features are determined by general meanings that we acquire through Language but that we expand and modify them through our personal perception of reality. Florensky insists on the role of context in the interpretation of lexemes and states that this contributes to the economy and creativity of Language. We also explain the difference between what he calls spiritual and verbal communication. Finally, we compare the ideas of this philosopher with the findings of modern linguistic and cognitive theories and demonstrate to which extent they converge (and prove that he scientifically was ahead of his time) and to which extent they are specific and non-transparent, because they are marked by his theological approach to human beings and their most important gift - the faculty of language.

This paper analyzes the media and entertainment companies’ main strategic options about what to do for growing—internationalization or diversification—and how to do it—organic and inorganic growth—in a context of ever growing competition. We identify correlations between those strategies and three basic pillars of managers’ decision-making process: growth, profitability, and indebtedness. We conclude that mergers and acquisitions can generate rapid growth, but they are expensive in terms of Return on Investment Capital (ROIC) and they usually increase the leverage of the company. Therefore, the inorganic path could not be the best option for companies with difficulties to get access to capital or for very cyclical businesses. In addition, we identify that vertical integration generates a lower ROIC than horizontal integration, and we show how internationalization strategies increase the profitability of audiovisual companies. We analyze the basic indicators of 50 listed companies in the sector that meet three criteria necessary for our study: data transparency, sufficient size of the company, and a certain trajectory that would allow us to study the consequences of the chosen strategies over long periods of time, at least 15 years. We study the firms’ evolution from 2010 to 2016 with metrics from the Thomson Reuters database. In that last year, they accounted for 88 percent of global television revenue.

Résumé :
This article looks at a fountain basin that is of outstanding art-historical interest as a surviving example of secular Romanesque sculpture. The fountain basin is signed by the Italian sculptor Drudus de Trivio and is dated c 1240. The article situates the fountain basin within Drudus’s oeuvre – most notably the ciborium in Ferentino and the choir-screens at Cività Castellana – and relates it to the recently completed cloister sculpture of the Lateran and San Paolo fuori le mura, of which Drudus had close knowledge. Possible sources are explored, and chronology, classical precedents and the innovative use of garlands are discussed. A new translation of the inscription, which has been rather neglected in previous studies, is offered. The translation places the inscription within the wider context of Italian fountain inscriptions and is used to suggest that the fountain was secular in purpose with the aim of querying the long-standing view that Drudus carried out only liturgical sculpture, thereby adding to our understanding of the work of the Cosmati.

Résumé :
This paper discusses the teaching of screenwriting and storytelling in terms of art and craft. It argues that since Romanticism established itself in the 19th century as the dominant Western view on art and culture, it has driven a wedge between people’s notions of art and craft, promoting the former and demoting the latter. This rift has impeded the teaching of screenwriting and storytelling in general. Following this, art historians and sociologists of art have suggested developing a “third system of art,” one that reintegrates the artist and the artisan, the art and craft-based values. This essay develops the basic tenets of a “technical approach” to the teaching of screenwriting. This technical approach sits in-between a Romantically biased “free-wheeling” approach and a mechanistic, “rule-based” approach. It is argued that a technical approach to screenwriting or storytelling could help materialize such a “third system of art” and benefit the practice, teaching, and study of screenwriting and storytelling.

Résumé :
Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is a medicinal species used in several areas, such as food, medicines and cosmetics, and the understanding of its physiological behavior under environmental conditions is of paramount importance for the improvement of cultivation methods. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different water availability under physiological, biochemical and metabolic characteristics, in three distinct genotypes: 'Alfavaca basilicão', 'Gennaro de menta' and 'Grecco à palla', during two different phenological stages (vegetative and reproductive). It was found that the water deficit promotes physiological changes to tolerate water stress, and the studied genotypes have different routes to achieve this physiological tolerance, which culminates in a distinct accumulation of metabolites in plants, and can be considered interesting if the final product is the production of essential oils.

Résumé :
This article, written by JPT Technology Editor Chris Carpenter, contains highlights of paper SPE 197610, “Application of Geocognitive Technologies to Basin- and Petroleum-System Analyses,” by Paolo Ruffo, Marco Piantanida, SPE, and Floriana Bergero, Eni, et al., prepared for the 2019 Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference, Abu Dhabi, 11-14 November. The paper has not been peer reviewed. Eni and IBM developed a cognitive engine exploiting a deep-learning approach to scan documents searching for basin geology concepts, extracting information about petroleum system elements (e.g., formation name; geological age; and lithology of source rocks, reservoirs, and seals), and enabling basin geologists to perform automated queries to collect all information related to a basin of interest. The cognitive engine succeeded in identifying the correct formations, lithologies, and geological ages of the petroleum systems with an accuracy in the range of 75 to 90%. Introduction While commercial databases often provide summary information about basins that can be extracted easily with queries or even interactive tools, the explorationist needs to integrate such information with more up-to-date and in-depth descriptions of structural and sedimentary events occurring in the basin, descriptions that can be found only in unstructured documents. Key information about basins can be scattered across paragraphs, tables, and image captions of hundreds of technical articles, or can be embedded within pictures. Even when exploiting a traditional search engine with the name of the desired basin, the results can be unsatisfactory: first, not all the results might be relevant; second, many different variants of the basin name are often used within publications. In the optimistic hypothesis that the subset of relevant documents is found by the search engine, all key concepts related to a basin need to be understood by the geologist by careful examination of the paper text and images. Moreover, even if the published information (structured and unstructured) on a basin is found, there are different opinions expressed by different authors, in addition to the uncertainty of the data itself (such as the age of a formation or the details of the geological evolution of the basin), so that multiple conceptual models of the basin can be drawn from the uncertain and scarce information available. Some of these conceptual models are more probable while others are less probable, but sometimes the latter happen to be economically more valuable. Therefore, recovery of all relevant information about a basin is crucial, but also important is the preservation of differing opinions about the data - what might be termed minority reports.
