Résumé :
Abstract This special section of Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, “Claiming Property, Claiming Palestine,” explores the paradoxes of Palestinians make ownership claims to agricultural land and urban real estate. Contributors foreground Palestinian thought and action, and demonstrate how Palestinian claim-making practices temporally exceed the colonial condition and trouble dominant assumptions about ownership, property, and sovereignty. Through granular cases studies rooted in the particularities of time and space, they show how claim-making allows for a critique of the settler colonial and Indigenous frameworks in Palestinian studies and points to generative avenues for comparative history and theory-making between Palestine and the global South.

Résumé :
This paper explores the effects of the Iraqi invasion on the Palestinian community in Kuwait. Specifically, it considers Gilles Deleuze's notion of the ‘missing people’ in relation both to the Palestinians deported after the 1991 Gulf War and to the majority of Kuwaitis who have not acknowledged the effects of this disappearance on either the Palestinians or themselves. The first section revisits the circumstances surrounding the deportation of approximately 380,000 Palestinians from Kuwait, while the second considers what was lost as a result. The final section proposes an ‘ethics of the missing’ as a possible means to engage and transform some of the ensuing problems.

Résumé :
AbstractThis article examines developments in the memoir form in Palestinian literature over time, concentrating on the period since the Oslo Accords of 1993. It begins by briefly looking at new, general theoretical perspectives on the memoir form relevant to recognizing the importance of memoirs by Palestinians. A shift from viewing memoirs as purely the product of individuals to validating the notion ofcollectiverecollection occurs in the theoretical literature and can be documented in the Palestinian memoir. Similarly, attention to the idea of recollection asfluidand as aprocessenriches our understanding of what Palestinian memorists are trying to achieve. This section draws upon the work of such foundational figures as Maurice Halbwachs, Paul Ricoeur, Sidonie Smith, and Julia Watson. It also incorporates the insights of those who have focused more specifically on the Palestinian memoir form, such as Rashid Khalidi and Susan Slyomovics. These theoretical views are then tested through the examination of fourteen works using the memoir format, ranging from the time of the dissolution of the Palestinian Mandate (Sakkakini, Jabra, Boullata) to the beginning of the new millennium and the decade beyond (Darwish, Barghouti, Amiry and Karmi). The article shows that any literary history of the memoir form in modern times would be incomplete without recognizing and incorporating the Palestinian contribution to this increasingly popular literary genre.

ObjectiveTo assess the differences in rates and odds for emergency caesarean section among singleton pregnancies in six governmental Palestinian hospitals.DesignA prospective population-based birth cohort study.SettingObstetric departments in six governmental Palestinian hospitals.Participants32 321 women scheduled to deliver vaginally from 1 March 2015 until 29 February 2016.MethodsTo assess differences in sociodemographic and antenatal obstetric characteristics by hospital, χ2test, analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis test were applied. Logistic regression was used to estimate differences in odds for emergency caesarean section, and ORs with 95% CIs were assessed.Main outcome measuresThe primary outcome was the adjusted ORs of emergency caesarean section among singleton pregnancies for five Palestinian hospitals as compared with the reference (Hospital 1).ResultsThe prevalence of emergency caesarean section varied across hospitals, ranging from 5.8% to 22.6% among primiparous women and between 4.8% and 13.1% among parous women. Compared with the reference hospital, the ORs for emergency caesarean section were increased in all other hospitals, crude ORs ranging from 1.95 (95% CI 1.42 to 2.67) to 4.75 (95% CI 3.49 to 6.46) among primiparous women. For parous women, these differences were less pronounced, crude ORs ranging from 1.37 (95% CI 1.13 to 1.67) to 2.99 (95% CI 2.44 to 3.65). After adjustment for potential confounders, the ORs were reduced but still statistically significant, except for one hospital among parous women.ConclusionSubstantial differences in odds for emergency caesarean section between the six Palestinian governmental hospitals were observed. These could not be explained by the studied sociodemographic or antenatal obstetric characteristics.

Résumé :
ObjectivesThis study aims to assess whether the characteristics, management and outcomes of women varied between Syrian and Palestinian refugees, migrant women of other nationalities and Lebanese women giving birth at a public tertiary centre in Beirut, Lebanon.MethodsThis was a secondary data analysis of routinely collected data from the public Rafik Hariri University Hospital (RHUH) between January 2011 and July 2018. Data were extracted from medical notes using text mining machine learning methods. Nationality was categorised into Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian and migrant women of other nationalities. The main outcomes were diabetes, pre-eclampsia, placenta accreta spectrum, hysterectomy, uterine rupture, blood transfusion, preterm birth and intrauterine fetal death. Logistic regression models estimated the association between nationality and maternal and infant outcomes, and these were presented using ORs and 95% CIs.Results17 624 women gave birth at RHUH of whom 54.3% were Syrian, 39% Lebanese, 2.5% Palestinian and 4.2% migrant women of other nationalities. The majority of women had a caesarean section (73%) and 11% had a serious obstetric complication. Between 2011 and 2018, there was a decline in the use of primary caesarean section (caesarean section performed for the first time) from 7% to 4% of births (p<0.001). The odds of preeclampsia, placenta abruption and serious complications were significantly higher for Palestinian and migrant women of other nationalities compared to Lebanese women, but not for Syrian women. Very preterm birth was higher for Syrians (OR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.08 to 1.40) and migrant women of other nationalities (OR: 1.51, 95% CI: 1.13 to 2.03) compared to Lebanese women.ConclusionSyrian refugees in Lebanon had similar obstetric outcomes compared to the host population, except for very preterm birth. However, Palestinian women and migrant women of other nationalities appeared to have worse pregnancy complications than the Lebanese women. There should be better healthcare access and support for migrant populations to avoid severe complications of pregnancy.

Résumé :
The events surrounding the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 and the ensuing Palestinian naqba (disaster) have generated an abundance of legal literature. It is beyond the ambitions of this article to revisit all or most of the existing literature, or to strive and comprehensively discuss the various legal propositions they consider. Instead, it offers a critical assessment of some of the legal conclusions offered by one of the most influential experts in the field – Professor James Crawford – who, in the second edition of his seminal treatise The Creation of States in International Law, discusses at some length the events surrounding the creation of Israel and the status of Palestine. Section 2 of the article offers some general observations on the continued relevance of the events surrounding the creation of Israel. In particular, it raises the question of the relationship between the principles of ex injuria non oritur jus and ex factis oritur jus in the Israeli–Palestinian context. Section 3 examines the legal significance of the 1922 League of Nations Mandate and Crawford's position concerning its validity. Sections 4 and 5 adopt a similar examination with regard to two other historic events of potential legal significance, namely the 1947 UN General Assembly Resolution 181 (the Partition Resolution) and Israel's 1948 Declaration of Independence. Section 5 also briefly examines Crawford's conclusions relating to the status of Palestine, and Section 6 concludes.

The following study envisions the modern history of the Palestinian- Israeli conflict through the application of previously underutilized theoretical frames. Beginning with the unprecedented political and social upheaval wrought upon the Middle East after the end of World War I, the article unfolds in three distinct sections. The first section provides an historical introduction to the global, transnational forces that guided the developing infrastructure of political conflict within the region. The second section articulates the ideological parameters of the international political and economic forces (“neoliberalism”) that connect the past and present of political conflict in the region as well as the local (state and non-state) and non-local actors involved in its contemporary manifestation. The third and final section reconceptualizes the Palestinian-Israeli conflict not exclusively as a territorial dispute or as a nebulous clash of cultures, but rather as a deliberate, operational casualty enduring in the service of an aggressive, transnational, and indeed historical force whose trajectory spans the length of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries: neoliberalism. In each sphere in which the neoliberal ideal has been applied – one, an historical fait accompli, another, a contemporary situation en cours – an important, connective element persists: the distinctly non-local origin of both the historical forces and the contemporary economic manifestations under examination.

Résumé :
This research studies al-Wārith, a novel by the Palestinian novelist Khalīl Baydas published in 1920. The introduction points at the consequences of the absence of the novel from critical studies for a long time until it was re-published in 2011, and hints at other studies that are mainly dependent on Dr. Nāsir al-Dīn al-Asad’s summary of the novel, and consequently, on his comments and interpretations. In its first section, the research deals with al-Asad’s study of the novel, and uncovers its recurrent impact on latter studies. Then, it proposes another interpretation based on the fact that the Palestinian society, at the turn of the twentieth century, was an oral one, or in its best conditions, an oral society impregnated with writing. In its second section, the research introduces a theoretical framework on which this different interpretation is based which comes in two parts. The first part discusses Baydas’ theoretical concepts of the novel/story and its implied reader, and brings to attention the overall circumstances during which al-Wārith emerged. The second part exhibits the various distinctive features/modes of oral production. In its third section, the research transforms these oral features into thier applicable sphere by following their appearance in the novel; thus, explaining Baydas’ concepts and the critics’ repetitive comments. Finally, the research concludes that al-Wārith did not totally divert from the modes of oral narration and the controls of its production that were absent from studies concerned with Palestinian literature at the beginning of the last century.

This Thesis aims to help establish a complementary funding mechanism for health services in the context of the current socioeconomic crisis in the emerging Palestinian State. It focuses on the design of an efficient and equitable cost-recovery mechanism for primary health care services, based on the value of improving the quality of care from the patients' perspective. The study makes use of contingent valuation method to assess the value, for the patients, of improving the quality of care, by eliciting patients' willingness to pay values for the different quality improvements. A contingnent valuation questionnaire was designed based on a decomposed valuation scenario and the payment card elicitation technique, with user-based financial contributions at the point of consumption being the payment vehicle. The questionnaire was administered on a sample of patients seeking care in different primary health care centers in Ramallah district during summer 2001. The elicited values were used to inform decision-makers about the highest extra user fee patients would be willing to pay to benefit from specified improvements in the quality of care. The values were used to model the demand function for improved care and to estimate demand price-elasticity and the impact of changing the pricing structure on centers' revenues. The questionnaire was re-administered 19 months later to detect the impact of the explosion of the second Palestinian Intifada and the concomitent steep impoverishment of the Palestinian population on patients' willingness and ability to pay for health care. The results demonstrate the feasibility and the “good” validity of contingent valuation when applied to developing countries. Increasing user fees seems to have a negative impact on demand for health care with price-elasticity increasing with rising user fees. An optimal user fee level could be attained to maximize centers' revenues; however, this would be accompanied with catastrophic social consequences. The study recommends suspending and attempt to put more burden on the patients in the present context, where poverty could adversly affect patients' ability to properly express their prefereces

Résumé :
AtkinsonThis study explores Work Life Balance (WLB) in two Palestinian organisations. It argues that the nature and content of WLB policies and the reasons for their adoption in many Arabic organisations differ from those in Western organisations. Additionally, research is under-developed concerning the role of line managers in interpreting access to WLB practices, and to what extent such WLB practices are accessed and utilised by individuals. Based on a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews with 49 employees and managers, this study shows that WLB policies involve, particularly for female employees, mainly family support, and financial, social, and religious benefits. These reflect cultural and religious characteristics of an Arab, Islamic country. In addition to identifying the role of government, and the needs of a female workforce, this study develops a new theoretical framework explaining the role of religious and cultural variables, as well as international networking of the organisations, as factors underlying adoption of WLB policies. Line managers often used Wasta, being the political and religious origin of individuals as criteria in granting benefits to individuals. WLB practices are useful for women, but males made less use of these practices, preferring strong ‘breadwinner Arabic cultural norms. A valuable contribution in understanding the extension of WLB policies in Arabic settings is offered, as well as cultural, social and religious reasons for their implementation. The study presents a theoretical model of the adoption and application of WLB policies which can be used in further crosscultural research.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The characteristics of the Palestinian Healthcare sector has led to a poor quality of care being provided which in turn pushed the Ministry of Heath (MOH) to initiate the Quality Improvement Project ( QIP ). That project was held responsible for improving the quality of healthcare provided through implementing Total Quality Management. This study assesses the process of TQM implementation in the Palestinian Healthcare sector. The central thrust of this study involves the identification of: The main pitfalls and obstacles to TQM which impede its implementation. The process of TQM implementation in the Palestinian healthcare sector. The main driving and restraining forces while implementing Total Quality Management in the Palestinian healthcare sector. The main lessons and recommendations for the future development of quality improvement. Case study methodology will be used in this thesis as it is unique in its ability to deal with a full variety of evidence through the use of documents, interviews and observations. The data that will be produced cannot be generalised. To overcome this disadvantage in the case study approach, a multi- method approach will be used in this thesis. A postal questionnaire survey, as part of the evaluation study, will be also used. The use of multiple cases and questionnaire surveys will justify the validity and reliability of the data .The multimethod approach in collecting the data in this thesis shows that the Quality Improvement Project (QIP) was not methodology - bound when implementing TQM. In the first cycle of improvement, the PDCA cycle was used as a model for implementation. In the second cycle of improvement, the Tom Noland model was used as basis for implementation. In seeking to improve the quality ofhealthcare, the QIP utilised no single scientific methodology for the improvement of the quality of healthcare but combination of more than one methodology that could assist in achieving the best results possible. The thesis also shows that the Quality Improvement Project Team (QIPT) dealt with many driving forces during their attempts to implement quality improvement such as team work, planning, a well defined and a scientific methodology, the use of a simple quality improvement model, a new management system, enthusiasm of the team leaders for quality improvement, and strong coordination. Furthermore, the QIPT faced many obstacles during implementing quality improvement such as the turbulent external environment, internal problems and difficulties inside the subject organisations, lack of monitoring and follow - up systems, resistant to change, centralisation, poor communication, and the dissatisfaction of health personnel. The QIPT learnt many lessons and drew many conclusions from their efforts to implement quality management in the Palestinian healthcare sector; such as the importance of the commitment of macro level managers to quality improvement. Quality improvement in Palestine is possible and has the potential to be successfully introduced into the current professional and technical internal environment. Consumer (internal & external) views about the health services is very important to consider when seeking any improvement in the health sector, and of maintaining a cintinous pattern of consolidation for the gains made in quality provision. In particular, there is a need to note the importance of conducting improvement processes within the selected organisations in response to the annual improvement needs plan within those organisations, of meeting the demand of the MOH and the importance of providing the financial and staff support that quality improvementprocesses needed if they are to be brought to a successful conclusion are recognised and recommendations offered.

Résumé :
This research explores the nature and extent of management development and training of senior and middle managers working in Palestinian telecommunication organizations using a basic trichotomous (three-stage) model: needs assessment, training development, and evaluation. A critical review of the literature is presented to identify the different approaches and key principles that make up the field of training and development. Using the survey approach, primary data were collected to answer the research question. A total of 142 questionnaires were distributed among senior and middle managers with 110 questionnaires being completed and returned (77 per cent response rate). Field work was also supported with 10 selected interviews with high ranking officials in the surveyed organizations to help corroborate the results. Thereafter, data was analysed using SPSS and spread sheets, and then compared with data available from literature. Despite the presence of a rather systematic approach to training, the findings show that the current status of training in the surveyed organizations is inadequate with heavy emphasis on traditional methods throughout the three stages; the current system does not offer a holistic perspective to training and development. This study presents an exploratory investigation into the training status in telecommunication organizations. It provides a fundamental foundation for future research aimed at expanding the available knowledge within the context of the study. In addition, specific strengths and weaknesses in the current system are identified using the trichotomous model in a more practical manner. Overall, this thesis offers both professionals and academics a fresh perspective on training in Palestinian telecommunication organizations; it not only highlights the importance of training but also stresses that future initiatives and programs are more carefully designed and implemented.

Garcette, Arnaud.

This research focuses on the socio-economic adaptation of the Palestinian olive oil sector in the face of Israeli control and separation schemes (1993-2013). This sector has benefited from a deep political rehabilitation, since olive trees have gradually become the icon of the Palestinian people and the symbol of their struggle against the occupation. While analyzing how the occupation devices deeply disrupt their environment, the study considers the Palestinians as active players who are learning to bypass Israeli restrictions by developing specific practices, formal and informal, and developing new networks. The analysis also focuses on the central role played by the growing number of foreigners in the West Bank (business people, tourists, pilgrims or activists). Palestinian olive trees are an opportune channel for both international aid and demonstrations of solidarity, generating many political and economic benefits. Various people have developed a wide range of development projects, tourist services and products sold in the name of solidarity with the Palestinians. By participating in these new markets, they undergo logistical and competitive constraints that force them to change their practices, their speeches and their networks. These interactions involve indeed a reorganization of economic practices but also a change in power, dependence and hierarchy relations between all the stakeholders. Based on the study of the transformations of olive practices as a result of the separation policy, this work opens more broadly into an analysis of "the separation of the economy" and the relationships between both the inhabitants and the visitors of Israeli-Palestinian lands

Since the end of World War II, and especially over the past three decades, there has been a dramatic increase of interactions between international financial institutions (IFIs) and states. This paper will explore these interactions by examining the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This paper rests on the assumption that the complex implications of these interactions are not yet comprehensively understood and will move towards that goal by setting forth a collection of new approaches to further understand IFI-state interaction. It will discuss Jordan’s economic and political history, structural adjustment policies implemented by the IMF, and responses and consequences of such policy on economic, cultural, and political dimensions. Then, theories on sovereignty, identity, nationalism and colonialism will be applied to Jordan-IMF interaction in order to suggest new ways of understanding the implications of IFI-state interaction.

Résumé :
Tese de Doutoramento (Área de Especialização Geografia Humana / Geografia)
Over the past centuries, industrialization has been playing a relevant role in the development of nations, especially through its worldwide contribution to the economic growth and thus increasing people’s well-being standards. However, industrial development and how it can be influenced by governmental decisions has only been slightly analyzed in the context of disputed or occupied territories with a sovereignty recognition problem. This research aims to contribute to overcome this gap, evaluating what could be the role of the Palestinian National Authority in the promotion of the industrial development in the West Bank. The main objective of this research is to debate the key challenges and obstacles faced by the West Bank industrial sector, in the perspective of the firms’ owners and managers. This research intends to give voice to those actors by analyzing the data reached thorough in-depth interviews, complemented by a survey to a statistically representative sample of the West Bank industry, in order to assure the validity of the presented results. The obstacles for the West Bank industry growth and development are various and encompass different magnitude, causes and nature. Many of them are caused by the influence of external forces, as a consequence of the limitations imposed by the Israeli occupation since 1967. A set of six major obstacles that should receive more attention and huge efforts from the Palestinian National Authority in order to overcome its negative influences to the local industries competitiveness were identified and discussed. Obstacles related with the lack of sovereignty and the non-control of the Palestinian Authority over its external and imposed internal borders. Obstacles related with unfair competition faced by local firms, motivated by the increase of the local production costs related with extra expenses that came from the occupation, and the fact that the West Bank economy is blockade and prevented from participate in the globalized economy. Obstacles caused by difficulties in fund raising and high taxation that limit the firms’ capability to face their difficulties and to grow by embracing new projects and investments. Obstacles that arose from the insecurity and political instability that caused the unattractiveness of the local economy for new investments (domestic and foreign). Obstacles related with several adversities and privations in the use of local infrastructures by the West Bank industries. And finally, obstacles that come from outdated production processes, associated with difficulties related with the technological modernization of local firms, as well as limitations and problems that derived from local management options.

Mestrado APNOR
Underperforming employees at an organization may exhibit costly negative behaviour that reduces both profits and productivity. For James, McKechnie, and Swanberg (2011) underperforming employees cost American businesses $300 billion a year in terms of lost productivity. For example, job performance for employees depends on many different factors including establishing a productive, accomplishing relationship between staff and management. The success of any organization is reliant on employees who enjoy doing their jobs and are rewarded for their work. The main purpose of this study is identifying non-monetary factors that influence the work performance of employees. This research aims to include in its exploration the key integral elements other than money, which have an impact on the performance of employees. The wide variety of results will be described and closely disseminated to produce a current comprehensive view and understanding into the non-monetary factors governing employee performance. Post result analysis of this study offered practical and relevant solutions and recommendations to creatively utilize and manipulate these factors to improve employee performance and raise their morale. The target industry in this case is the private telecommunications sector in Palestine. Specifically, the two major companies “Jawwal” and “Al-Wataniya”. The research methods are mainly quantitative with only a qualitative method being used to inspect the results from the open-ended questions. The key findings of the study show that in both companies the employees rated recognizing and appreciating their work is the most important factor affecting their performance. Furthermore, it is found that the strong employee-manager relationship with motivation does have a positive effect on employee performance of both companies. One resultant difference between the companies is discovered, where the office environment positively effects employee work performance in only Jawwal Company

This chapter presents a case study on the use of force against individuals in the context of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, using both archival research and field research conducted in Israel and the occupied West Bank between 2015 and 2016. It is divided into three substantive sections. The first section describes the social structures, understood in a Durkheimian sense of collective consciousness and representations and the morphological facts of society, that influence the use of force in the context of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. The second section conceptualizes the role of human agency, respectively as a pre-legal notion, a legal construction, and a relative concept to signify greater or lesser degree of human autonomy, in the use of force against individuals in war. Adopting a relative conception of human agency, the third section establishes the relative distinction between structural and agential factors through examining their interaction in different instances of use of force in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. It demonstrates how the purported convergence of the laws governing these factors leads to a conflation of ontologies in practice.

Résumé :
The study includes the provisions of international responsibility arising from the violation of the rules of international environmental law in Islamic jurisprudence and Palestinian legislation, and it aimed to identify and shed light on the provisions of this responsibility, while the study problem was about the legal effects of international responsibility resulting from the violation of international law for the environment. The study included an introduction, a preliminary requirement, two sections and a conclusion. In the preliminary requirement, the researchers dealt with the concept of environmental responsibility and the basis for its establishment in international law, while in the first section they talked about the legal regulation of environmental protection in international law, while in the second section they reviewed the impact of the recognition of environmental responsibility in law International. In the conclusion, the researchers concluded a set of results and recommendations, the most important of which they reached was that the international legislator did not mention a codified environmental law from which the legal rules based on environmental protection can be drawn; This makes it difficult to reach the rules and provisions of this law, and environmental responsibility is established for the violator of environmental legislation without requiring the occurrence of damage, where the environmental damage is considered a reality by virtue of the violation, and the international community faces shortcomings in the framework of environmental responsibility; It does not define environmental crimes as primary crimes, but as accessory crimes, While the most important recommendations reached by the researchers were the need to codify international environmental legislation to facilitate access to it and to know its provisions, and they also recommend the need to provide more clarification about environmental responsibility and the consequences of actions that are not prohibited by law and that may cause environmental damage, and the inclusion of environmental crimes within international crimes in a way Independent and as original crimes.

Résumé :
Background : Due to the rising healthcare costs around the world, self-medication has become an important option in the management of common conditions. However, the benefits of such selfmedication practices depend upon them being used responsibly. Studies about the prevalence of analgesics use and related factors are limited in Jordan, particularly among refugees which is one of the vulnerable sectors of the population. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and practices of Palestinian refugees in the Al-Baqa’a camp in Jordan regarding the use of analgesics to address any common misuse or misknowledge. Method: A cross-sectional study design was conducted from 20 October to 10 November 2021. A researcher-developed questionnaire to assess knowledge and practices were used as a tool for studying both interviewer-administered and self-administered survey among 253 adult Palestine refugees at Al Baqa’a refugee camp. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 26 for descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: A high percentage of the respondents 78.3% reported that they use analgesics as selfmedication. Of these participants, 37.9% reported having a chronic disease, 34.4 % never suffer from pain in the last month, and 33.6% reported that they do not have health insurance. the most commonly used class of drugs was NSAIDs with a frequency of 193 fowled by paracetamol with a frequency of 90. While the most common condition for which the refugees use self-medication is the cost with 168 frequency, In the assessment of participant’s knowledge; analgesics are used to treat minor illnesses by 70%. 94% reported that analgesics can’t be used after their expiry date while 34% reported that analgesics do not have side effects. Final statics will have presented at the conference. Conclusion: Self-medication is widely practiced in Albaq’a refugees camp, although they are familiar with the most important information regarding the risks associated with the use of analgesics. Résumé :
Background: As of 2020, 28 percent of Jordan's population was between the ages of 16 and 30, with Jordanians and Syrians accounting for the majority of the youth population. Nevertheless, the transition to adulthood is getting more complex, especially in meeting their sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs. Unfortunately, there is still limited data on how youth perceive these challenges and needs. Objective: This study aimed to address SRHR needs and related topics such as gender-based violence among the Jordanian youth. Method: This is a cross-sectional study of a convenience sample of Jordanian adolescents (16 to 26-year-old). Data were collected via a google form filled out physically by the participants. Results: 209 people completed the survey, with 107 (51.2) female respondents. The age ranged from 18 – 26 with a median of 22. The majority were Jordanians 178 (85.2), others were Syrians 28 (13.2), Palestinians 2 (1), and Iraqi 1 (0.5). Most of the respondents are currently studying in college 138 (66). Moreover, 60 out of 209 do not know what we mean by reproductive and sexual health, while 48 (23) think it is sexual satisfaction and safety. Regarding the item that asks about the importance of spreading awareness regarding reproductive and sexual health, 58 (27.8) participants answered that it raises awareness about family planning and reduces the risks of unintended pregnancies. At the same time, 44 (21.1) respondents think it is vital to break the barrier of shame and harmful traditions about these topics (to fight the culture of shame). The most common three family planning methods were condoms, Intrauterine devices (IUDs), contraceptive pills, hormonal patches, or contraceptive injections 117 (56). The most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) prevention methods were using condoms 62 (29.7) and staying away from illegal, random relationships, multiple partners, and homosexuality 19 (9.1). 197 (94.3) think society needs to raise awareness of this issue. Conclusion: We found that the majority of abducents in Jordan do not have enough knowledge regarding sexual and reproductive health issues. Therefore, we recommend the government and the NGOs initiate awareness campaigns to raise awareness and help fight the culture of shame. Résumé :
Aim: The general aim of this study is to screen for the prevalence of mental disorders(PTSD, anxiety and depression) amongst refugees residing in Baqaa refugee camp. Design: cross sectional quantitative study using close-ended surveys Methods: Data were collected from 124 refugees collected at baqaa refugee camp. The participants were recruited based on convenience sampling. The questionnaire included the GAD-7, PHQ-9, and part IV of the HTQ questionnaires used to screen for anxiety, depression, and symptoms of PTSD respectively. Each one of these questionnaires has its own valid and reliable scoring system that will assess how severe these mental illnesses are in the participants. For all three questionnaires, a valid Arabic translation was used, as most of the participants are fluent only in Arabic. Results: The results of this study indicated that a large portion of refugees showed signs that are indicative of suffering from mental disorders Conclusion: Our data indicate a challenging and persisting disease burden in refugees due to anxiety, depression and PTSD. Knowing this is relevant for the development of public health policies of host countries. Scalable interventions, tailored for refugees, should become more readily available. This study delved into the presence of anxiety, post-traumatic stress and depression amongst Palestinian refugees and determined that health screenings should be performed. Summary Statement What is already known about this topic? • Previous studies indicated that the quality of life in baqaa refugee camps was significantly worse than other areas in the country. • This study is one of the first one of its kind in Jordan to specifically focus on baqaa refugee camp and screen for anxiety, depression and PTSD What this paper adds? • Improving the awareness of people responsible for refugee camps about the devastating effects of mental health on the quality of life of refugees • It helps understand the population there, what kind of mental issues they are facing, which ones are most common so that governing authorities can know how to help them more efficiently. • Encourages talks about mental health and normalize seeking help especially in a group of people where mental health problems are really concentrated such as refugee camps The implications of this paper: • The researchers strongly recommend more detailed and thorough screening as well as providing refugees with options to seek therapy. Key words: Anxiety, depression, Post-traumatic stress disorder, Refugees, Mental disorders

Just, Richard E., Eithan Hochman et Sinaia Netanyahu. Problems and Prospects in the Political Economy of Trans-Boundary Water Issues. United States Department of Agriculture, février 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2000.7573997.bard.

Résumé :
The objective of this research was to develop and apply a conceptual framework for evaluating the potential of trans-boundary bargaining with respect to water resource sharing. The research accomplished this objective by developing a framework for trans-boundary bargaining, identifying opportunities for application, and illustrating the potential benefits that can be gained thereby. Specifically, we have accomplished the following: - Developed a framework to measure the potential for improving economic efficiency considering issues of political feasibility and sustainability that are crucial in trans-boundary cooperation. - Used both cooperative and non-cooperative game theory to assess feasible coalitions among the parties involved and to model potential bargaining procedures. - Identified empirically alternative schemes of cooperation that both improve upon the economic efficiency of present water usage and appease all of the cooperating parties. - Estimated the potential short-run and long-run affects of water reallocation on the agricultural sector and used this information to understand potential strategies taken by the countries in bargaining processes. - Performed case studies in Israeli-Jordanian relations, the relationship of Israel to the Palestinian Authority, and cooperation on the Chesapeake Bay. - Published or have in process publication of a series of refereed journal articles. - Published a book which first develops the theoretical framework, then presents research results relating to the case studies, and finally draws implications for water cooperation issues generally. Background to the Topic The increase in water scarcity and decline in water quality that has resulted from increased agricultural, industrial, and urban demands raises questions regarding profitability of the agricultural sector under its present structure. The lack of efficient management has been underscored recently by consecutive years of drought in Israel and increased needs to clean up the Chesapeake Bay. Since agriculture in the Middle East (Chesapeake Bay) is both the main water user (polluter) and the low-value user (polluter), a reallocation of water use (pollution rights) away from agriculture is likely with further industrial and urban growth. Furthermore, the trans-boundary nature of water resources in the case of the Middle East and the Chesapeake Bay contributes to increased conflicts over the use of the resources and therefore requires a political economic approach. Major Conclusions, Solutions, Achievements and Implications Using game theory tools, we critically identify obstacles to cooperation. We identify potential gains from coordination on trans-boundary water policies and projects. We identify the conditions under which partial (versus grand) coalitions dominate in solving water quality disputes among riparian countries. We identify conditions under which linking water issues to unrelated disputes achieves gains in trans-boundary negotiations. We show that gains are likely only when unrelated issues satisfy certain characteristics. We find conditions for efficient water markets under price-determined and quantity-determined markets. We find water recycling and adoption of new technologies such as desalination can be part of the solution for alleviating water shortages locally and regionally but that timing is likely to be different than anticipated. These results have been disseminated through a wide variety of publications and oral presentations as well as through interaction with policymakers in both countries.
