W XIII w. biskupi Dyrrachion (Dyrrachion) stanęli wobec wielu problemów politycznych i religijnych. Musieli również stawić czoło spowodowanej siłami natury katastrofy (trzęsienie ziemi i tsunami), jaka dotknęła miasto w 1271 r., potem porzucone przez biskupa Niketasa (Niketas) i zdobyte przez łacinników. Historyk Jerzy Pachymeres (Georgios Pachymeres) opisał przebieg kataklizmu i jego następstwa uwzględniając krytykę polityki kościelnej cesarza Michała VIII Paleologa (Michael VIII Paleologos). Z kolei dla św. Serapiona (Serapion) z dalekiej Rusi los mieszkańców Dyrrachion, podobnie jak pogranicznego Przemyśla był konsekwencją moralnego upadku wywołanego bliskimi kontaktami z łacinnikami. Mimo opinii o wpływie katolików w Dyrrachion poparcie cesarza z Konstantynopola zapewniało ochronę prawosławnej organizacji kościelną w tej części zachodnich Bałkanów.

If we analyse all examples where Byzantine princesses were mentioned in Serbian hagiographies, we could reach certain conclusions. The performances of the Byzantine princesses in the above mentioned lives are not uniform and the descriptions of their characters ranged from extremely positive to extremely negative. If we look closely at their mentions, it is observed that the description of each of them was intended to tell us more directly about the hero of this life: to portray him as a good diplomat, martyr, strong ruler and knight, or a weak man; then to provide appropriate moral instruction to readers; or to convey with a conveyed meaning a picture of the relationship between Byzantium and Serbia at the time it describes. Princesses who are not named or described by any epithet that would fit their personalities are thus suppressed as irrelevant. These were Eudocia the Angel in Sava's Life of Saint Simeon and Ana the Angel in Domentian's Life of Saint Sava. The portrayal of Eudokia and Anna mentioned the life writers only for the purpose of extolling the diplomatic abilities of the main heroes of the lives of Stefan Nemanja and Saint Sava, who manage to befriend the Byzantine dynasty. The Byzantine princesses who were described in a positive light were Simonida Paleologus in the lives of Queen Jelena and King Milutin and Maria Paleologina in the lives of King Stefan Decanski of Danil's Learner and Grigory Camblak. The writers of life have given these princesses the names and descriptions of their personalities with certain epithets of a pious, godly, Christ-loving and blissful woman. However, the description of Simonide in the lives of Danilo is actually a description of the ideal view of his wife in the Middle Ages, not the actual image of this Byzantine princess and Serbian Queen. The description of Simonida's character was used to portray to idealize Milutin character as the true representative of the patriarchal family. With this depiction, Simonide Danilo fulfilled the goal and complemented the image of Milutin as an "ideal" man, which was the reason for writing the piece. A positive portrayal of Maria Paleologus also served as a means of constructing the character of his life hero, Stefan Decanski, as a "ideal" ruler and knight. The idealized portrayal of these Byzantine princesses was perfectly in line with the historical context of the time of origin of life and the aesthetic tasks of their authors. The negative representations of the Byzantine princesses were followed by the omission of their personal names, the epitome of a sly, malicious, shameless woman and a comparative comparison with female biblical figures who were the embodiment of evil. In a negative light are depicted princess Anna Angel in Theodosius' Life of Saint Sava and Simonides in the Life of Stefan Decanski by Grigory Camblak. The performances of these two Byzantine princess are full of stereotypes and do not represent realistic descriptions of their personalities. The negatively described personalities of powerful women who exert influence over their husbands Anna Angel and Simonide Paleolog actually speak more about their husbands than themselves. These two Byzantine princes served as writers of life as a means of portraying Radoslav and Milutin as weak and submissive men. In doing so, the writers of life fulfilled their tasks of writing the work. By telling the story of the cunning Anna and the submissive Radoslav, Theodosius magnified the character of his hero of the life of Saint Sava and at the same time gave moral instruction to his readers. Grigory Camblak rehabilitated the hero of his life, Stefan Decani, with the story of the shameless and malicious Simonida and characteristically weak man Milutin, which was the reason for writing the work. These Byzantine princesses arrived as brides in Serbia and became members of the Serbian ruling family. For the writers of life, they were foreigners in Serbia, but no author portrays their foreign origin in a negative context. Moreover, most writers of life have a striking emphasis on the glorious imperial origins of these women in a positive light. It was their glorious imperial descent that made them the hero of life. Being married to a Byzantine princess, a member of the imperial dynasty, meant prestige to the Serbian middle-aged ruler. Even writers who negatively describe the two Byzantine princesses do not mention them as aliens. Although the Byzantines viewed Serbia as a barbaric land from a height, Byzantium was an ideal to aspire to medieval Serbia. Byzantine princesses Irina Laskaris and Teodora Paleolog in Serbian medieval life were different from those described above, because they were not brides of Serbian rulers. Although they did not give her name, Irina Laskaris was presented by Domentian and Theodosius in the Life of Saint Sava exclusively as a friendly empress. The picture of Irina Laskaris at Domentijan is at the same time the most realistic representation of a noble Byzantine woman in Serbian hagiography. It is not idealized or constructed by the author. On the other hand, the indefinite mention of Theodore Paleologus, and the simultaneous highlighting of her rival Ana Nemanjic, as part of the description of the battle of Velbuzde with Danilo's Learner, may have been tasked with secretly personifying Byzantium, which after this battle lost its prestige in the Balkans. The historical context of the time of Dusan's age in which life was created would support this hypothesis.

Alexandru Paleologu (March 14, 1919, Bucharest – September 2, 2005, Bucharest) was a very well-known Romanian public figure, especially for his work as a writer, essayist and literary critic, but also as a politician and former ambassador of Romania in Paris during the first months of 1990. His appointment as ambassador was a political one, since Alexandru Paleologu was not a career diplomat at that time. Less well known is the fact that Alexandru Paleologu was a career diplomat between August 1, 1946 and November 20, 1947.

ABSTRACT Khuff Sequence KS6 was studied in the Al Jabal al-Akhdar, Oman Mountains, in an area of 30 x 50 square kilometers by means of detailed sedimentological logging of five time-equivalent outcrop sections of the Saiq Formation. KS6 represents one transgressive-regressive, third-order sequence, and is composed of four facies associations each representing particular environments of deposition (backshoal, shoal, foreshoal and offshoal) with distinct sedimentological characteristics. Facies stack to form cycles and cycle sets that were used for correlation at a subregional scale and to reveal the KS6 stratigraphic architecture. During the initial phase of basin-fill, clastic sediments (“Basal Saiq Clastics”) were deposited in paleolows above the “Sub-Saiq Unconformity”. In contrast to younger Upper Khuff sequences KS4 to KS1, the underlying paleorelief strongly affects the thickness and facies composition of KS6. The correlation strategy to follow paleolandscape surfaces using all available sedimentological, biostratigraphic and lithostratigraphic data resulted in a stratigraphic architecture with subtle shingle geometries. Sequence KS6 shows a strong facies partitioning resulting in the necessity of two separate facies models for the transgressive (crinoidal ramp) versus regressive hemisequence (oolitic/peloidal carbonate ramp). This study revealed potential reservoir units in KS6, commonly regarded as non-reservoir in the subsurface of Oman and other parts of the Gulf region. The abundance, nature and lateral extent of reservoir facies strongly varies with stratigraphic position. In the transgressive part of KS6, crinoidal grainstones are concentrated around the margin of a gentle paleohigh. They might have the best reservoir potential, although early diagenetic cementation is common in most settings. Oolitic/peloidal grainstones in the upper regressive part have a much higher diagenetic reservoir potential and are laterally much more widespread. Thus, Khuff Sequence KS6 differs profoundly in its stratigraphic architecture from the more “layer-cake”-like KS4 to KS1 sequences. Facies and thickness patterns are controlled by a marked paleohigh to paleolow configuration, resulting from the antecedent uneven topography during the Neo-Tethyan syn-rift setting, in contrast to the post-rift setting with low tectonic activity during KS4 to KS1.

Steinhardt, the author of Jurnalul fericirii [The Diary of Happiness], was not only an exquisite intellectual colporteur, but also an erudite essayist of astonishing spontaneity, who gave his intellectual discourse a remarkable cultural breadth, which places him in the same spiritual family as Alexandru Odobescu, Paul Zarifopol, Mihail Ralea, Alexandru Paleologu or Andrei Pleșu. In spite of the diversity of the themes addressed, the essays of the later monk of Rohia preserve a basic unity, revealed in a coherent modus cogitandi and a defensive ethos, intended to protect individual freedom through recourse to modesty and to what Paleologu called common sense as paradox. Reading Steinhardt’s essays is also a powerful antidote to laziness of thought, offering the reader the chance to escape from the narrow horizon of commonplaces. Leaving aside the prison memorial and the texts on religious subjects, which are permeated by the same essayistic vein, we highlighted the fact that Steinhardt understood literary criticism as an ingenious creative activity, polemically anti-positivist, susceptible to new and surprising cultural analogies, incessantly pleading for the rehabilitation of subjectivity, emotion and feeling as essential factors in the process of knowledge, from the perspective of a fundamental humanism drawing from Montaigne’s tradition.

Το χάλκινο μετάλλιο με τον Ιωάννη Η' Παλαιολόγο, που φιλοτεχνήθηκε με την ευκαιρία της Συνόδου της Φεράρας-Φλωρεντίας (1438-1439), θεωρείται το πρώτο μετάλλιο της ιταλικής Αναγέννησης. Έργο του Pisanello, που πιθανότατα κατασκευάστηκε στη Φεράρα (1438) -τα προσχέδια σώζονται-, αποτελεί την απαρχή ενός είδους που ξεχωρίζει για την καλλιτεχνική του ποιότητα και το ιδεολογικό του περιεχόμενο. Το μετάλλιο επηρέασε σημαντικά την ιταλική τέχνη του β' μισοΰ του 15ου αιώνα, και ιδιαίτερα ζωγράφους όπως ο Piero della Francesca και γλύπτες όπως ο Filarete, καθώς και πολλούς εικονογράφους χειρογράφων. Το πορτραίτο του Βυζαντινού αυτοκράτορα, που πιθανόν αναπαράχθηκε και από έναν —χαμένο σήμερα— ζωγραφικό πίνακα, αποτέλεσε το εικονογραφικό πρότυπο για την απεικόνιση μυθικών και ιστορικών προσώπων της ελληνικής Ανατολής. Το φαινόμενο αυτό, που δείχνει τη σπουδαιότητα του μεταλλίου, προσείλκυσε επανειλημμένα την προσοχή των επιστημόνων. Δεν είναι όμως το μοναδικό ζητούμενο της εκτεταμένης πλέον σχετικής βιβλιογραφίας. Άλλα ζητήματα αφορούν τη χρονολογία και τον τόπο κατασκευής, τον παραγγελιοδότη και την ιστορική σημασία του εικονογραφικού μηνύματος του μεταλλίου. Την έρευνα δεν έχουν απασχολήσει ακόμη ζητήματα όπως η χρονολόγηση, η αλληλεπίδραση και η προέλευση καθενός από τα σωζόμενα παραδείγματα, όπως συνήθως συμβαίνει στις κριτικές εκδόσεις των γραπτών κειμένων. Για τον λόγο αυτό, παραθέτουμε έναν νέο —εμπλουτισμένο σε σύγκριση με τον ήδη υπάρχοντα στο Corpus του Hill- κατάλογο των χάλκινων και των μολύβδινων παραδειγμάτων, καθώς και κάποιων ιδιαίτερων παραλλαγών. Σημαντική βοήθεια σε αυτή την πρώτη απόπειρα ταξινόμησης μπορούν να προσφέρουν τα τέσσερα μετάλλια του Μουσείου Μπενάκη, τα πολυαριθμότερα σε σύγκριση με όσα φυλάσσονται στις άλλες αθηναϊκές συλλογές (Νομισματικό Μουσείο, Εθνικό Ιστορικό Μουσείο, Βυζαντινό και Χριστιανικό Μουσείο). Ένα από τα τέσσερα, το μολύβδινο, είναι προφανές ότι είναι μοντέρνο. Τα άλλα τρία, τα χάλκινα, είναι παλιά μετάλλια, όπως δηλώνουν η πιστότητα τους ως προς το πρωτότυπο, η ποιότητα της χύτευσης και τέλος η διάμετρος τους, η οποία αποτελεί μία σημαντική τεχνική ένδειξη για τη χρονολόγηση των διαδοχικών αντιγράφων. Η παρουσίαση των νέων, αδημοσίευτων έως σήμερα, παραδειγμάτων προσφέρει μία ακόμα ευκαιρία για επανερμηνεία της παράστασης του οπισθότυπου, η οποία γενικά περιγράφεται ως σκηνή κυνηγιού —γνωστό πάθος του αυτοκράτορα. Απεικονίζεται η στιγμή της ανάπαυσης δίπλα σε πεσσό με επίστεψη σταυρού. Οι παραστάσεις όμως του διάσημου χαράκτη μεταλλίων δεν περιορίζονται ποτέ στο εφήμερο, το γενικό ή το διηγηματικό. Έτσι, και οι αρχιτεκτονικές συνθέσεις που απεικονίζονται στον οπισθότυπο του μεταλλίου του Filippo Maria Visconti (1440) -έργο με πολλές ομοιότητες με το μετάλλιο του Παλαιολόγου, οι οποίες θεωρούνταν έως σήμερα φανταστικές- συμβολίζουν τελικά τη Βενετία και τη Φλωρεντία, δύο πόλεις ουσιαστικά εχθρικές προς την εξουσία του Visconti. Με δεδομένο το ιστορικό πλαίσιο μέσα στο οποίο δημιουργήθηκε το μετάλλιο του Παλαιολόγου και λαμβάνοντας υπόψη το αξίωμα του τιμώμενου προσώπου, θεωρείται πιθανόν ο οβελίσκος που στηρίζει τον σταυρό να συνιστά σαφή αναφορά στη Ρώμη, όπου ο οβελίσκος του Αγίου Πέτρου αποτελούσε σταθμό προσκυνήματος και σύμβολο των χριστιανών της Δύσης. Συνεπώς, η σκηνή αυτή θα εξέφραζε την επιθυμία για την ένωση των δύο Εκκλησιών. Αυτή η ένωση πρέπει να εγκωμιάστηκε σε ένα δεύτερο μετάλλιο -που αναφέρει ο Paolo Giovio- με τη γνωστή κεφαλή του αυτοκράτορα σε κατατομή στον εμπροσθότυπο και δύο ενωμένα χέρια (οι δύο Εκκλησίες) που κρατούν έναν σταυρό στον οπισθότυπο. Το μετάλλιο που δεν σώζεται, καταδικασμένο ίσως να καταστραφεί ύστερα από την αποτυχία της ένωσης των Εκκλησιών, θα συνιστούσε μία πρώτη παραλλαγή του έργου του Pisanello, που φιλοτεχνήθηκε, εν τη απουσία του, στη Φλωρεντία αμέσως μετά την ολοκλήρωση των εργασιών της Συνόδου στις 6 Ιουλίου του 1439. Η νέα παράσταση που αναφέρει ο Giovio, έγινε το επίσημο έμβλημα του Βησσαρίωνα, αξιωματούχου στην πολυπληθή ακολουθία του Βυζαντινού αυτοκράτορα και ενός από τους υποστηρικτές και πρωταγωνιστές της Συνόδου. Το έμβλημα αυτό απεικονίζεται στους κώδικες και στα πολυάριθμα έργα του, τα οποία μετέδωσαν -από τη στιγμή που ο Βησσαρίωνας έγινε καρδινάλιος της Καθολικής Εκκλησίας- την ελληνική σκέψη και τον κλασικό πολιτισμό στην ιταλική Αναγέννηση, κυρίως μέσω του πλούσιου κληροδοτήματος του στη Μαρκιανή Βιβλιοθήκη της Βενετίας. Στον οπισθότυπο του αναμνηστικού του μεταλλίου -παλαιότερα στην κατοχή του Goethe* σήμερα φυλάσσεται στη Βαϊμάρη— δεν απεικονίζονται πλέον τα δύο ενωμένα χέρια, αλλά πλούσια βλάστηση που θα μπορούσε να υπαινίσσεται έναν βιβλικό εορτασμό της Σοφίας.

Abstract The search for purity of language during the Palaeologan age has often been regarded as a revival of the Atticist movement of the second century AD. Students who had access to the higher education aimed at mastering this new form of Attic Greek: a large set of ancient authors deemed to be models of language and style served as repositories of lexical materials. Within this framework the need of school handbooks, dictionaries is quite understandable. In the first section of the paper I offer an overview of the multifarious typologies of scholarly texts largely used in the first Palaeologan age. Then, I focus more specifically on some miscellaneous excerpts merged into anthological manuscripts, by taking into account a largely overlooked series of grammatical and lexical annotations on Lucian. Differently from what is often stated in the catalogues, I show how the order of the items follows closely Lucian’s texts. These annotations could be the transcription of teachers’ notes and/or lecture notes taken during collective/private readings of texts.

In the article the perception of the image of Michael VIII Palaeologus by literate citizens of Tsardom of Russia is considered. The study is based on analysis of writings that date back to XVII century. The study focuses on identifying the symbols and latent ideas, that point to a semantic connection of the studied writings with The Old Testament, Apocalypse and some antique texts. In the end of the article the authjr makes a conclusion, that the perception of the image of Michael VIII Palaeologus in Tsardom of Russia was negative.

L’opuscolo attribuito a Michele Psellos Περὶ θυτικῆς (ed. O’ Meara 1989) contiene osservazioni divinatorie desunte dal sacrificio cruento, in particolare relativamente alla traiettoriadi caduta ed agli spasmi delle vittime prima di esalare l’ultimo respiro. Questo metodo di predizione è ignoto alla ieroscopia greca, ma trova paralleli nelle fonti greche (Diodoro Siculo,Strabone) che descrivono tale prassi nell’ambito del sacrificio umano celtico gestito dai druidi. Il titolo di una tavola pseudo-pitagorica di età paleologa da Laur. 28,14 sembra alluderead una simile tecnica divinatoria. For Byzantium, the XIV century was the time of its last elevation in culture, which was called "Paleologic Renaissance." His main content was "hesychast disputes", which lasted for thirty years and took frequent political forms. The main subjects of this discussion were, on the one hand, the Calabrian monk Barlaam, who came from Italy, where he received Latin education, and on the other hand, the Thessalonian Metropolitan Gregory Palam, who spoke on behalf of the Athos monks. The followers of Palami received the name "Palamit". Varlaam and Palama were representatives of two opposite directions in Byzantine culture of the XIV century. - "anti-knitting" and monastic-church (hesychastic).

The article presents a historiographical analysis of “A Historical Sketch of the Greek War of Independence…” as one of the first writings in Russian historiography on the Greek Revolution and the participation of the great powers in it. The writing was published in St. Petersburg in 1867 by two Russian military historians of Greek origin — G. Paleolog and M. Sivinis. It was based on preserved materials from the personal archive of Russian admiral Pyotr Ricord, an active participant in the last episodes of the war. Besides the fact that the authors have used a many new historical sources (mostly epistolary), they also analysed the experience of studying this issue by European historians, who published several important writings at that time. With this in mind, Paleolog and Sivinis tried to form their own vision of the Greek events and the participation of the great powers in them. As a result, they became one of the first Russian scholars who have actualized the Greek Question in their historiography and presented it as one of the most important parts of Russia’s eastern policy at that time. The research of “A Historical Sketch” as an important historiographical source consists in an analysis of the preconditions and circumstances of publication, its structure, content, genre and ideological concepts, as well as biographies of the authors, their views and attitudes. It is considered inseparably with the historical background and in view of ideas about Greek events of that time in European historiography. Thus, the reader will have a holistic idea of “A Historical Sketch” as both a separate historical work and an important historiographical source for the study of the Greek Question in Russian pre-revolutionary historiography.

In the past it has been assumed that the images of the Virgin Galaktotrophousa derived from the art of the Italian Duecento and Trecento in the post-Byzantine period. However, there is sufficient ground to assume that these images were known already in the Middle Byzantine period and were popular during the period of the Paleologian dynasty.

Hrvatska historiografija 19. stoljeća doživljavala je stanovitog Ivana kao rodonačelnika obitelji Oršić, jedne od najuglednijih hrvatskih velikaških obitelji 18. stoljeća. Ivan nije dijelio uobičajenu sudbinu suvremenika iz 15. stoljeća, bio jedan od proslavljenih branitelja opkoljenog Carigrada 1453. Stajao je uz bok cara Konstantina XI. Paleologa tijekom posljednje navale na Osmanlije i bio jedan od rijetkih uz carev odar dok su Osmanlije pustošili carski grad. Pritom su mu supruga i maloljetni sin bijegom utekli smrtnoj sudbi. Većina suvremenih povjesničara Ivanov život drže izmišljenom pričom, no je li to bio slučaj i za povjesničare iz 19. stoljeća? Rad prati dinamičnu transformaciju lokalnog društvenog znanja kroz proces narativizacije prošlosti i – u stanovitim socijalnom i situacijskom konstruktu konstrukcijama – korist takve transformacije za preoblikovanje normativne i političke zajednice. Uz to istodobno će otvoriti i neka pitanja vezana uz historiografsko razumijevanje prošlosti i ulogu historičara u stvaranju povijesti.

In the milieu of interwar Romanian modernism, Șerban Cioculescu showed a particular interest in the making of literary biographies, which in the post-war decades resulted in a self-styled version of biographical criticism. This article follows the avatars of a heated debate developed in 1970-‘80s around the life and works of writer Mateiu I. Caragiale, involving, on the one hand, Alexandru George, Alexandru Paleologu, and N. Steinhardt, and on the other, Șerban Cioculescu and Eugen Simion. While the former group claims a textual hermeneutics devoid of biographical speculation, the latter supports the revival of biography-based analysis. Eugen Simion finds in Șerban Cioculescu’s approach a valuable ally, while preparing his book Întoarcerea autorului (The Return of the Author, 1981), to defy the mainstream anti-biographical orientation of Romanian criticism, and reintroduce, in the spirit of French theory (like Jean Starobinski or Serge Doubrovsky’s), the figure of the author in text interpretation.

Although the genesis of women police dates back to 1925, not much information on the activities of this formation has been preserved until today. It is known that it was established on the initiative of the Polish Committee for the Fight Against Trafficking in Women and Children and its main goal was to fight prostitution, to prevent women from being taken out of the country and exploited for work as prostitutes, and later also to take care of children. The formation was supervised by lt. Stanisława Filipina Paleolog. Her duties included controlling female police officers in terms of their task performance, as well as taking care of new candidates. In the article, on the basis of archival documents, the author analyses control reports and protocols drawn up during that period, on the basis of which it is possible to reconstruct, at least partially, the history of Polish female police officers in the late 1930s.

Os depósitos sedimentares jovens da região de Cássia, no sudoeste de Minas Gerais, são conhecidos e intensamente explotados como matéria-prima para cerâmica vermelha desde a década de 1930. Entretanto, tais materiais geológicos foram pouco estudados, geralmente de maneira sucinta em trabalhos ainda inéditos. Além disso, a cobertura sedimentar se mostra fortemente controlada pelos traços da Zona de Falha de Cássia, uma importante estrutura pré-cambriana que corta e deforma o embasamento cristalino da região. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho tem por objetivo descrever e mapear os depósitos sedimentares, investigando a relação deles com a referida zona de falha. Assim, foi caracterizado um pacote sedimentar de composição predominantemente pelítica, referente ao registro de um paleolago, com a entrada episódica e localizada de leques aluviais, associados com a movimentação/reativação tectônica dos traços da Zona de Falha de Cássia durante o Quaternário.

Despot Lazar Brankovic was a son of despot Djuradj Brankovic and despoina Jerina (Irina), born Cantacuzenus. He was in exile with his parents in 1439-1444, in Hungary, Italy, Ragusa, Zeta. He married Helen, the daughter of Thomas Paleologus, despot of Morea in 1446. At that occasion he was crowned with the crown of despots, because his older brothers, Grgur and Stephen, had been blinded. Thus he became the heir to the Serbian throne and his father?s co-ruler. When despot Djuradj died, on December 24th, 1456, he became a Serbian ruler. In the extremely difficult political conditions, he maneuvered between Turkey and Hungary. He entered a hard dispute with his mother, who was supporting the blind Grgur in his attempts to seize the power. He was poisoned by the nobility, which blamed him for alleged matricide.

Olena Apanovych is an outstanding researcher of Ukrainian Cossacks, who rose as a scientist in academic environment in 1945–1950s. In those times the functioning of state archives were renewed and the scarcity of professionals came up. Being a philologist, future famous historian accidentally became an employee of Central State Historical Archives of the USSR in Kyiv. She did not have a basic historical education and studied in a postgraduate department during 1945–1948 (Specialization “History of Ukraine”) which she successfully graduated. Despite all difficulties, young researcher managed to combine the two activities simultaneously. In 1950 she successfully defended thesis. During studing she gained both theoretical and practical experience.While studing at postgraduate department, she even helped her colleagues and friends. When she was leading the department of “old acts”, she initiated Polish language studying, paleology, basic archiving were arranged for other activities that supported professional growth of archive workers.While being influenced by the Kyiv academic society, including PhD lecturers Fedor Shevchenko, Serhii Maslov, Vycheslav Strelskii, PhD colleagues Ivan Butych and Tetyana Slydikova, and under the direct influence of PhD supervisor Kostia Huslystyi and own initiative to self-growth, Olena Apanovych carried on with her development as personality and a professional and continued to be a part of Kyiv intellectuals environment.

It is quite certain that the visible frescoes in the exonarthex of the Gračanica Monastery outer narthex do not come from the same period, so their chronological separation and more precise dating are complex. If it is taken into account that it was built in the early thirties of the 14th century, the outer vestibule have been painted after 1330, but those frescoes are not visible today. It was repainted later, during the time of Metropolitan Nicanor around 1530. The scene of the Baptism of Christ (Mt. 3: 13-17, Mk. 1: 9-11, Lk. 3: 21-22, Jn. 1: 29-34) belongs to the time of the Metropolitan Nicanor, and it is located on the eastern wall of the outer chancel, south of the southeastern pilaster. The iconographic analysis of this scene provides an insight into the wide theological education of the painters, as well as a sense of narrative and primarily adherence to good models from the Paleology era. The style of the Gračanica Monastery frescoes, which belong to the period around 1530, was adapted to the program based on tradition. The developed scene of the Baptism of Christ, inspired by the highest role models, emphasizes confidence in composition and performance, expert drawing and fine modelling in combination with an illuminated palette.

Las investigaciones arqueológicas en el bajo de Sarmiento (centro-sur de la provincia del Chubut) permitieron argumentar que la pesca fue una actividad importante entre las poblaciones cazadoras-recolectoras. La información disponible nos permite ubicar el inicio de dicha actividad aproximadamente en 1500 años AP. En este trabajo se evalúa la distribución de los pesos líticos (plomadas de redes) como indicadores de la cronología de la actividad pesquera, tomando como marco de referencia el esquema de evolución del paleolago que cubrió la totalidad del bajo. Los resultados indican una mayor frecuencia de hallazgos de pesos líticos en los sectores del fondo de valle, disponible para la ocupación humana luego del Holoceno tardío final, lo que sugiere que la pesca es un fenómeno posterior al 1500 AP. Se incluyen en la discusión problemas de visibilidad, coleccionismo y tafonómicos, además de datos arqueofaunísticos, cronológicos y tecnológicos.

Detailed calculations show that the two most important dynamical problems in the formulation of a theory of star formation (namely, the angular momentum and magnetic flux problems) can be resolved in that order by magnetic braking and ambipolar diffusion, respectively, relatively early during the collapse of an interstellar cloud or fragment. El inicio del poblamiento humano en la isla de Bioko (antigua Fernando Poo) (Guinea Ecuatorial) es un tema mal conocido. Investigaciones previas establecen una secuencia de ocupación exclusivamente Holocena a pesar de que Bioko ha estado conectada con el continente durante el último periodo glacial. Con objeto de localizar evidencias de ocupación Pleistocena se georeferenciaron 44 puntos/afloramientos, distinguiéndose sedimentos volcánicos y materiales volcano-sedimentarios eluviales y aluviales. Entre estos cabe destacar el hallazgo de una larga serie de sedimentos lacustres correspondientes a un paleolago ubicado en un cráter. A pesar de lo exhaustivo de las prospecciones no se halló ninguna evidencia de presencia humana atribuible a una cronología pleistocena. Nuestros resultados confirman una ocupación muy tardía de Bioko posterior a los 8000 años BP. La ausencia de ocupaciones previas podría obedecer a condiciones ecológicas hostiles (pluviosidad, parasitismo), aunque es posible que las ocupaciones pleistocenas estuvieran restringidas a las zonas costeras y que estas se encuentren hoy sumergidas.

The angular momentum is one of the major obstacles to the contraction of interstellar clouds. An efficient process of removing the angular momentum from the cloud is via transport along the magnetic field lines to the ambient medium. When the magnetic field is nearly uniform and the direction of the field lines is parallel to the rotation axis, the spin-down time of the cloud is given by σ/2ρVA, where σ is the column density of the cloud along the field lines, and ρ and VA are the density and the Alfvén velocity, respectively, in the ambient medium (Ebert et al. 1960; Mouschovias & Paleologou 1980). However, this is for a cloud with weak gravity. Because a cloud with strong gravity has contracted dragging the field lines, the ambient field is considerably distorted from uniformity. The spin-down time of such a cloud is shorter than given above (Gillis, Mestel & Paris 1974, 1979).

Byzantine icons of the 14th century in Russian museums are scattered material. In this regard, the situation when it is possible to identify or at least raise the question of whether two icons of such an artistic level from different collections belong to the same master is almost unique. The Late Paleologian icon of the Resurrection of Lazarus from the the Russian Museum can without exaggeration be called the pearl of the collection. The icon was received by the Russian Museum in 1928 from the collection of G. N. Gamon-Gaman through the State Museum Fund. There is a small icon of the Nativity of Christ distinguished by high pictorial skill in the collection of the new Patriarchal Museum of Church Art at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. The study of this late Paleologian monument is just beginning, but the special relevance of its research is due to the fact that the artistic features allow us to compare this image with the aforementioned icon of the Resurrection of Lazarus, a landmark monument of the collection of the Russian Museum. A number of features of the icon of the Nativity painting technique makes it possible to speak about a significant stylistic community of these two monuments despite the fact that the preservation of it is not the best. The similarity of the nuances of color, the principles of shaping, the presence of common characteristic techniques in the construction of gaps, the picturesque solution of clothes, the dashed manner of modeling the light part of the slides, individual handwriting and great similarity in individual details, the general features of the drawing of the hands and feet of the characters, the nature of the vegetation image, the proportions of the figures, the size of the image, the features of gilding halos (on top of the paint layer) ― all these aspects reveal such a close similarity of painting techniques that it becomes possible to raise the question of identifying in this case the individual manner of one master and the belonging of these two icons to the festive row of the same iconostasis. Technical studies of the icon of the Resurrection of Lazarus were carried out by S. I. Golubev during the restoration in the Russian Museum in 1986–1990, the research results of which definitely make it possible for a more substantive comparative analysis of the two icons.
