Résumé :
Abstract In the 1470s, Domenico Spreca, a citizen of Viterbo, commissioned a cycle of virtues for the sala on the upper floor of his palazzo. From 2012 to 2018, the frescoes, largely unknown in (art) historical research, were the subject of legal proceedings and, on a regional level, of public debate over the preservation of cultural heritage. Over these years, it became clear that objects not only require financial resources to protect and preserve them over the centuries, but also need to be part of a narrative. Such a narrative was lost at an early stage, although the frescoes bear extraordinary witness to the negotiation processes of the 15th century concerning political virtues. In this paper, I argue that the cycle of virtues should be interpreted as an allegory of good government. Domenico Spreca addressed the conditions of loyalty (fidelitas)/obedience (oboedientia) on the one hand and the authority (auctoritas) of the superiores – the Pope, the Curia and the Rector of the Patrimonium Petri in Tuscia – on the other. To facilitate comprehension of this interpretation, the frescoes will be embedded in the political culture of Viterbo. To this end, their interpretation will be preceded by observations on the institutional establishment of papal authority in the city and on how its citizens dealt with it in the 1450s and 1460s: an authority that they legitimised on the basis of its pacification of factional struggles within the city and demanded for this purpose, from which they benefited and whose arbitrariness they attempted to curtail.

Résumé :
This paper summarizes the main results of the study, diagnostics, and restorations conducted and applied to a 16th century wall painting (a portion of the frieze and the Riario coat of arm) in Palazzo Gallo (Bagnaia, Viterbo district—central Italy) recently concluded, which was also the subject of a master’s degree thesis in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at the University of Tuscia, Viterbo. Innovative imaging techniques were used for the first time on a wall painting on-site: hypercolorimetric multispectral imaging (HMI) and pulse-compression thermography (PuCT), combined with more traditional analysis such as X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and cross-section investigation. HMI allowed for mapping the conservation status before and after the removal of the scialbo layer that covered the original paintings. It also allowed different areas of the painting to be compared and for verifying the effectiveness of the cleaning. PuCT enabled the detection of cracks and discontinuities in the ground layers and to evaluate the depth of such anomalies, giving valuable support in the consolidation step. Moreover, passive thermography was used to monitor the penetration level of a hydraulic mortar in real time, a technique that was greatly helpful for verifying the successful fill and consolidation of voids beneath the pictorial layer. Overall, the multi-technique approach reported here was of considerable assistance for restoration of the mentioned artwork, the result of which has also been documented.

Résumé :
A 17th century wall painting, representing the Virgin between two Saints, in a noble Italian renaissance palace, the Palazzo Gallo in Bagnaia (Viterbo, Italy), was restored in 2021 in the context of a wider restoration campaign involving the main room of the palace built by cardinal Sansoni Riario. Diagnostic analyses performed using traditional characterization techniques (optical microscopy on micro-stratigraphic sections, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) provided the identification of both the original painting and its restoration materials, while imaging investigations using the ultraviolet fluorescence photography, false color images and multispectral mapping provided by the hypercolorimetric multispectral imaging (HMI) technique enabled the evaluation of the state of conservation, the location of restoration interventions and supported the monitoring of the cleaning procedure. An altered protective Paraloid®-based coating dating from the early 2000s had to be removed due to the unpleasant glossy finishing it had given to the painted surface, making the scene barely readable. To pursue a restoration protocol based on environmental sustainability and green chemistry, enzyme-based gels marketed by the Nasier-Brenta© and CTS© companies were tested in different protocols for the cleaning of the mixture (known as beverone) covering the painting. Although some interesting results were observed, the enzymatic cleaning had limited effectiveness, and was more timing-consuming than was reasonable. Traditional chemical solvents such as Dowanol PM (methoxy propanol) and benzyl alcohol were necessary to complete the cleaning of the painting surface.
