Résumé :
In August 1976 the remains of a substantial building were uncovered in the courtyard of the Palais de Justice at Rouen, by the street which has been called at least since 1116 the rue aux Juifs (see plate I). That it was a Jewish building is confirmed by the Hebrew graffiti on its interior walls. It can be dated firmly to the years around 1100 by its scale, style, and workmanship, which are strongly reminiscent of the so-called ‘Norman exchequer’ in the ducal castle at Caen. The quality of its masonry is as good as may be found anywhere in northern Europe at this time. The function of the building is not altogether certain. At 14.14 X 9.46 metres, with at least one storey above the ground floor, it seems too large for a private dwelling, and indeed it is bigger than any known synagogue of this date north of the Alps. Not only the graffiti, but the lions of Judah finely carved at the base of one column, and the dragon from Psalm 91 on another, strongly suggest a religious purpose. The synagogue was on this street, but it is usually thought to have been on the south side, opposite the Palais de Justice site. This has led Norman Golb, the author of a major study of the Jewish community at Rouen, to suggest that the building unveiled in 1976 was a school, which acted as a centre of advanced study, not only for the Jewry of Rouen, but for a much larger region in which educational and scholarly activity is attested throughout the twelfth century by a rich crop of surviving manuscripts and other references, including many from places like Pont-Audemer, Touques, Falaise, Evreux, and Coutances, which were by no means major urban centres at this time.

Through an analysis of a series of inventories located in the historical archiveof the Ducal House of Alburquerque, this essay considers the presence of objects fromthe Spanish American viceroyalties among the belongings of this noble family. Beyondthe predominant taste in the early modern period for the accumulation of exotic objects, their presence here is in large part due to the posts of viceroy of New Spain held bytwo family members in the middle of the 17th century and the beginning of the followingcentury. Their positions caused the circulation of numerous and varied objects, especially for the decoration of their main houses at the court of Madrid, which, according to the sources analyzed here, aimed to reflect the appearance of thesumptuous palaces in New Spain.KEYWORDS: Collecting, New Spain, Duke of Alburquerque, Madrid, Palace

When f = 0 = g, we show that the ground state solution of ( S ) is unique. On the other hand, when f and g are nontrivial nonnegative functionals with ker(f) = ker(g), then we establish the existence of at least two different positive solutions of ( S ) provided that ‖ f ‖ ( H ˙ s ) ′ and ‖ g ‖ ( H ˙ s ) ′ are small enough. Moreover, we also provide a global compactness result, which gives a complete description of the Palais–Smale sequences of the above system.

The Ducal Palace in Sabbioneta, commissioned by Vespasiano Gonzaga in the end of 16th century, keeps four precious wooden ceilings inside. Rough wooden planks nailed to a skeleton structure creates the support for fine wood decorative elements. The requirement of a conservation work has prompted a diagnosis phase about the ceilings as a whole. This was carried out by closed up observations, drilling tests and laboratory analysis.

Abstract This paper deals with existence and multiplicity of positive solutions to the following class of nonlocal equations with critical nonlinearity: ( − Δ ) s u − γ u | x | 2 s = K ( x ) | u | 2 s ∗ ( t ) − 2 u | x | t + f ( x ) in R N , u ∈ H ˙ s ( R N ) , $$\begin{array}{} \displaystyle \begin{cases} (-{\it\Delta})^s u -\gamma\dfrac{u}{|x|^{2s}}=K(x)\dfrac{|u|^{2^*_s(t)-2}u}{|x|^t}+f(x) \quad\mbox{in}\quad\mathbb R^N,\\ \qquad\qquad\qquad\quad u\in \dot{H}^s(\mathbb R^N), \end{cases} \end{array}$$ where N > 2s, s ∈ (0, 1), 0 ≤ t < 2s < N and 2 s ∗ ( t ) := 2 ( N − t ) N − 2 s $\begin{array}{} \displaystyle 2^*_s(t):=\frac{2(N-t)}{N-2s} \end{array}$ . Here 0 < γ < γ N,s and γ N,s is the best Hardy constant in the fractional Hardy inequality. The coefficient K is a positive continuous function on ℝ N , with K(0) = 1 = lim|x|→∞ K(x). The perturbation f is a nonnegative nontrivial functional in the dual space Ḣs (ℝ N )′ of Ḣs (ℝ N ). We establish the profile decomposition of the Palais-Smale sequence associated with the functional. Further, if K ≥ 1 and ∥f∥(Ḣs )′ is small enough (but f ≢ 0), we establish existence of at least two positive solutions to the above equation.

Résumé :
The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 63 (2015), issue 4. The painting Ascent into Heaven (88.8 x 39.9 cm; dendrological dating: 1482–1490) kept in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice is one of the four eschatological panels (the other three are: Earthly Paradise, Fall of the Damned, Hell) which probably were in the collection of the Venetian Cardinal Domenico Grimani in the 1520s. The panels’ original arrangement and function are unknown. The paintings are not signed and their attribution to Jheronimus Bosch (c. 1450–1516 ) is based largely on the grounds of stylistic criteria. In the study, I put Ascent into Heaven into two fundamental contexts for the iconographic analysis of this work: eschatological literature and Netherlandish/ Flemish painting and in the context of near-death experiences (NDE) as well. The answer to the question posed in the title of the study must remain twofold. On the basis of the data gathered in the study, the content of the painting can be comprehended by references to the most frequently quoted sources of inspiration for Bosch: one painting by Dieric Bouts (left wing of the Last Judgement Altarpiece; Lille, Palais des Beaux Arts), two illuminations by Simon Marmion (Le livre des sept Ages du monde; Brussels, Bibliothèque royale de Belgique, Ms. 9047, fols. IV & 12r) and a literary work Dat rike der ghelieven by Jan van Ruusbroec. Its content can be equally understood by reference to the role of the painter’s imagination (categories of inventio and fantasia), using his theological and astronomical knowledge. The above line of interpretation that emphasizes the influence of biblical logosphere, takes into account undeniable religious experience of the painter from ‘s-Hertogenbosch resulting from being a member of the Church. The factor of an epistemological importance which influences the form of the answer to the title question is hypothetical non-verifiable Bosch’s personal transcendental experience, thus it becomes impossible to evaluate the translation of what is spiritual (experience) into visual (image). Due to the elusive, not fully scientific nature of NDE this phenomenon should be excluded from the final conclusion.

Résumé :
Digitization of Cultural and Museum Heritage represents one of the most engaging challenges that would ensure a sustainable and ethical approach for next generations; digital technology’s pervasiveness imposes a comprehensive management of architectural heritage by producing facsimiles of buildings and artworks and by testing robust methodologies, with the final result of providing effective multipurpose models. In this context, the main goal of the present paper is to develop a semantically aware HBIM model that includes an intelligent objects parametrization, leveraging Extended Reality (XR) technologies and digital curation of contents to pursue the preservation of Cultural Heritage (CH) as a whole. This research is implemented in the case study of the Ducal Palace of Urbino that houses the National Gallery of Marche. It was chosen as a remarkable example of a museum located in an architectural complex with a relevant historical background and fine detail of shapes and mouldings. In Italy, as in other European scenarios, museums and their collections need suitable dissemination and management systems that take advantage of the recent digital paradigms. The challenging approach is to exploit existing platforms and software and to adopt a cognitive modelling process, able to develop tools supporting managers and museum curators while enabling user experiences using immersive and interactive features. In order to stress the workflow, this work proposes the use of families with high Level of Detail (LOD) and high Level of Information (LOI). The present article provides, as well, an accurate data enrichment process specifically designed for a gallery’s artworks such as paintings and sculptures, in line with the national and international policies. The study presents a robust and reproducible methodology for digital musealization and management, focusing, as future overall objectives, towards a greater merging between the HBIM approach and XR technologies, also facilitated by training new professional figures with more in-depth digital skills.

The episode of the ducal palace in Don Quijote (2.30-57) exhibits a critique of traditional codes of male behavior, represented by the Duke and the ecclesiastic, that extends to a more general censure of the noblemen's loss of social purpose and the clergymen's disregard of their evangelical mission. The condemnation of the Duke's conduct coincides with the diatribe against courtly efffeminacy linked to the crisis of masculinity related to imperial decline. This, and the disapproval of the ecclesiastic's verbal aggressiveness, expressed through his feminized representation, appeals to a new model of masculinity based on discipline and self-control

Archaeological research by the old Russian state Hermitage expedition on the territory of the South-Western section of the Cathedral square of the ancient Alexander Sloboda in 2019 revealed the remains of two stone chambers of the Grand Ducal and Royal residence, Dating from the beginning of the XVI century and the 1570s. For the first time, the remains of ceremonial structures that are mentioned in the ranks and categories of the weddings of Ivan the Terrible and Tsarevich Ivan Ivanovich and can be correlated with the images on engravings by I. T. de Brie from the 1578 edition of the book by Jacob Ulfeld have been studied archaeologically.

Résumé :
Abstract. Integrated surveying with active and passive systems is a well-established process for understanding artifacts at different scales and levels of complexity. But some acquisition problems still exist, related to the presence of non-optically cooperating materials, reflective surfaces, and non-homogeneous and uncontrolled illumination conditions. Especially in these cases, the integration between different 3D acquisition techniques allows us to test the response of different instruments concerning the boundary conditions, going to compare the results. This activity highlights the pros and cons of each technique, identifying the right balance for future applications with the same conditions. The case study analyzed in the article is the Piffetti Library, a wooden work from the first half of the 1800s present at the Quirinale Palace (Rome). The artifact shows multiple levels of environmental complexity (small space with movement constraints and uncontrollable light), and it is composed of several wood pieces with a very glossy finish. The presence of shelving, free-form surfaces, and sculptural details requires careful planning to survey the artifact with consistent resolution. The use of different active and passive acquisition methods is tested, defining an integrated methodology coherent with the complexity of the artifact and the context in which it is positioned. The dual purpose is to define a possible replicable protocol, arriving at the definition of reliable 3D data for subsequent analysis and virtual reconstructions.

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to examine the existence of at least two distinct nontrivial solutions to a Schrödinger-type problem involving the nonlocal fractional $p(\cdot )$ p ( ⋅ ) -Laplacian with concave–convex nonlinearities when, in general, the nonlinear term does not satisfy the Ambrosetti–Rabinowitz condition. The main tools for obtaining this result are the mountain pass theorem and a modified version of Ekeland’s variational principle for an energy functional with the compactness condition of the Palais–Smale type, namely the Cerami condition. Also we discuss several existence results of a sequence of infinitely many solutions to our problem. To achieve these results, we employ the fountain theorem and the dual fountain theorem as main tools.

Résumé :
AbstractFossils of extinct jawless vertebrates are pivotal to deciphering the evolutionary paths that led to the various forms of the vertebrate skeleton. For example, Pteraspidomorphs (stem‐gnathostomes), such as the Ordovician Astraspis, display some of the oldest remains of bony and ‘dental’ (dentine and enameloid) tissues. However, the identification of the very nature of these early mineralized tissues has been hampered by a lack of unambiguous diagnostic characters. As development is key to identifying the derivation of these tissues, we developed an integrative and generic histogenetic model, testing several ontogenetic scenarios. We illustrate our approach on the basis of the well‐preserved Astraspis samples and show how this can be used to infer key developmental features from extinct species. This study suggests that in the odontodes of Astraspis: (1) the initial curvature of the epithelium was close to the shape of the final external surface; (2) the mesenchymal cells differentiate synchronously in the whole inner periphery; and (3) the capping tissue was produced by both mesenchymal and epithelial cells (enameloid rather than enamel). Astraspis specimens also provide evidence of a dual growth periodicity, possibly homologous to Andresen and von Ebner growth lines observed in amniotes, suggesting this type of dual periodicity may be shared by most vertebrates. We estimated that an Astraspis odontode grew up in around 60–70 days at a rate of 0.5–5 μm/day. The new developmental approach proposed in this study could be a robust framework for critically evaluating the tissues of extinct taxa in the future.

Résumé :
AbstractThe frieze of the Art of War was originally positioned along the sides of the facade of the Ducal Palace in Urbino (Marche, Italy), and it is currently located in the palace’s Chancellery Room. The frieze, probably elaborated by Federico da Montefeltro around 1474, consists s of stone bas-reliefs illustrating a rich iconographic repertoire depicting numerous engineering machines and symbols related to the military and political spheres. The present work aims to deepen the knowledge of the Art War frieze and to clarify some doubts regarding the original shape of the bas-reliefs, the constituent material, and the executive technique; conservation issues were also considered. Polarized light microscopy observations were carried out on the stone materials, identifying the use of a packstone referable to the Calcare Massiccio A Formation (Hettangian-Lower Pliensbachian p.p.). This stone, locally known as Piobbico Travertine, was excavated in the Val d’Abisso quarries, part of the Umbria-Marche ridge. Ca-oxalates were detected by Fourier transform infrared analysis in the brownish patinas that mainly cover the surfaces of the bas-reliefs; they could be related to ancient conservation treatments and/or to biological agents. Regarding the execution technique, a thorough autoptic examination allowed for a better understanding of the original conformation of the bas-reliefs and the carving process. Stylistic and executive differences in the execution of the same detail were observed in different bas-reliefs, confirming the activity of various sculptors. Different decay typologies were used to consider the debate regarding the original arrangement of the frieze on the facade, validating the most accredited hypothesis.

Résumé :
Oyster reefs play a dual role in the ecological and economic sustainability of global estuarine resources. Due to human activity and climate change, the prevalence of cosmopolitan oyster reefs has noticeably declined in recent decades, triggering a global restoration movement. However, the hydrodynamic functions of oyster reefs during and after restoration, particularly the impacts of growth and morphology on the flow field, remain poorly understood. This study employs the lattice Boltzmann method coupled with large-eddy simulation to simulate unidirectional flow around restored oyster reef models using the open-source Palabos library. It examines the effects of unidirectional flow velocity and reef morphology on hydrodynamic characteristics. The research analyzes spatial and temporal variations in velocity, vorticity, and turbulence structure around the reef. The findings indicated significant flow field differences between the initially restored reefs and those post-restoration. The dimensionless wake region scale parameters of the initially restored reefs exhibit hysteresis effects, generating larger turbulence during the post-recruitment stage than in the initial stage. Areas of high turbulence in the wake are associated with above-canopy flow, bypass flow, and within-canopy flow. The presence of gaps and branches in the reef leads to complex turbulence structures and irregular vortex shedding in the reef's wake at the post-recruitment stage. These results are valuable for assessing oyster reef resilience and planning effective restoration interventions.
