Résumé :
A four-dimensional (4D) model is presented of the first oxide dodecagonal quasicrystal found in a Ba–Ti–O ultra-thin film on a Pt(111) single-crystal substrate. The 4D model, with a 4D dodecagonal lattice constant a d = 8.39 Å, was derived by considering a tile decoration model of dodecagonal Niizeki–Gähler tiling composed of squares, triangles and 30° rhombuses. The model consists of four kinds of occupation domain, and 4D positional vectors defining the shape of each occupation domain are given. Moreover, the atomic arrangement of two Ba–Ti–O periodic approximants, the sigma-phase approximant and a 25.6 Å approximant were derived from the 4D model by the introduction of linear phason strains.

Résumé :
Icosahedral samples of nominal composition Al63.5Cu24Fe12.5, which normally grow a rhombohedral approximant crystal, were submitted to heat treatments of various durations. The atmosphere in contact with the surface of the specimens was either dry air or secondary vacuum in order to test whether the formation of the icosahedral phase is sensitive or not to the nature of the atmosphere. Materials annealed in air showed a very thin surface layer of oxide which contained hydrogen. Beneath this oxide layer, small quantities of oxygen and hydrogen were also detected within the underlying lattice. This contamination was sufficient to shift the composition of the samples out of the stability domain of the icosahedral phase and has induced formation of a significant amount of the cubic phase. In contrast, the rhombohedral compound no longer appeared. This behavior goes along with the great sensitivity of the icosahedral phase stability to a sharply denfined electron to atom ratio.

Résumé :
This paper reports the preparation conditions and structure characteristics of Al–Cr–Fe very thin films (10–30 nm) obtained by the flash evaporation technique. The films are either amorphous or crystallized, depending on the thickness of the sample and temperature of the substrate. Annealing of amorphous films leads to crystallization of intermetallic phases that are all linked with quasicrystals. In particular, we have identified by transmission electron microscopy the following structures: body-centered-cubic (bcc) γ-brass phase, monoclinic λ–Al13(Cr,Fe)4 phase, and orthorhombic O1-phase, all of them already observed in this system, together with four new structures, i.e., a face-centered-cubic (fcc) γ-brass phase (superstructure of the bcc phase), monoclinic λ′-phase (related to the λ-phase) and two orthorhombic phases (1/1/; 1/1) and (1/0; 2/1) approximants of the decagonal phase). In this study, we point out the occurrence of twin defects of the λ–Al13(Cr,Fe)4 phase. Films prepared directly in the crystalline state comprise the O1 approximant. Electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements show that all films are not oxidized except for the presence of a native oxide layer that forms in ambient atmosphere with a thickness that cannot exceed 0.3 nm. Optical properties were investigated and show that films need to be large enough (>30 nm) to reproduce the properties of bulk alloys. Finally, contact angle wetting measurements reveal that the presence of such films on a substrate, even at very low thickness, considerably decreases the wetting behavior by water.

Résumé :
AbstractAn experimental comparison has been made between the properties of the surfaces of an Al70Pd21Mn9 quasicrystal and its Al48Pd42Mn10 approximant. The Al70Pd21Mn9 sample was a single grain icosahedral quasicrystal cut to expose its five-fold symmetric (000001) surface. The approximant was polycrystalline β-phase Al48Pd42Mn10, which has a CsCl-type cubic structure. Surfaces of both were prepared under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions and then used for comparative measurements of their frictional properties and oxidation rates. Both materials are oxidized by reaction with O2 to form a thin film of aluminum oxide that ultimately passivates their surfaces. The interesting difference between the two is that the rate of oxidation of the approximant is significantly higher than that of the quasicrystal in spite of the fact that the bulk Al concentration of the approximant is lower than that of the quasicrystal. Friction measurements were made under UHV conditions between pairs of quasicrystals and pairs of approximants whose surfaces were either clean or oxidized to varying degrees. The friction between pairs of the approximant surfaces is significantly higher than that measured between the quasicrystal surfaces under all conditions of surface oxidation.

Résumé :
AbstractDodecagonal oxide quasicrystals are well established as examples of long-range aperiodic order in two dimensions. However, despite investigations by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM), photoemission spectroscopy as well as density functional theory (DFT), their structure is still controversial. Furthermore, the principles that guide the formation of quasicrystals (QCs) in oxides are elusive since the principles that are known to drive metallic QCs are expected to fail for oxides. Here we demonstrate the solution of the oxide QC structure by synchrotron-radiation based surface x-ray diffraction (SXRD) refinement of its largest-known approximant. The oxide QC formation is forced by large alkaline earth metal atoms and the reduction of their mutual electrostatic repulsion. It drives the n = 6 structure of the 2D Ti2O3 honeycomb arrangement via Stone–Wales transformations into an ordered structure with empty n = 4, singly occupied n = 7 and doubly occupied n = 10 rings, as supported by DFT.

Résumé :
AbstractWe have investigated formation of oxides on quasicrystalline and crystalline alloy surfaces of similar composition, in different oxidizing environments. This includes a comparison between a quaternary orthorhombic approximate of Al-Cu-Fe-Cr quasicrystal and the ternary Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystalline and crystalline phases. We noted that each sample showed the following common trends: preferential oxidation of the Al, enrichment in the concentration of Al present at the surface upon oxidation, water concentration is directly related to oxide thickness, and the oxide thickness displays a strong correlation with the bulk concentration of Al in the sample.

Résumé :
Abstract Ever since the discovery of quasicrystals, periodic approximants of these aperiodic structures constitute a very useful experimental and theoretical device. Characterized by packing motifs typical for quasicrystals arranged in large unit cells, these approximants bridge the gap between periodic and aperiodic positional order. Here we propose a class of sequences of 2-D quasicrystals that consist of increasingly larger periodic domains and are marked by an ever more pronounced periodicity, thereby representing aperiodic approximants of a periodic crystal. Consisting of small and large triangles and rectangles, these tilings are based on the metallic means of multiples of 3, have a 6-fold rotational symmetry, and can be viewed as a projection of a non-cubic 4-D superspace lattice. Together with the non-metallic-mean three-tile hexagonal tilings, they provide a comprehensive theoretical framework for the complex structures seen, e.g., in some binary nanoparticles, oxide films, and intermetallic alloys.

Résumé :
AbstractThe nucleation behavior of the 1/1 quasicrystal approximant phase was investigated in Ti-TMSi- O (TM=Mn, Cr, Fe) alloys made near the stoichiometric composition. Containerless solidification studies were performed using electromagnetic (rf) levitation and drop-tube techniques. The solidification microstructures indicate that α-Ti nucleated first in Ti-Cr-Si-O and β-Ti in Ti-Mn-Si-O alloys; the 1/1 phase nucleated and grew on these titanium oxide dendrites. In Ti-Fe-Si-O alloys, the 1/1 phase nucleated and grew directly from the liquid, allowing information on the nucleation rates to be obtained from undercooling data.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTReduced wetting and friction are two essential surface properties that to a large extent currently embody the technological potential of quasicrystalline coatings. By quasicrystalline compounds, one considers here the whole family of complex Al-(Cu or Pd)-(Fe, Cr or Mn) intermetallics, which comprises true quasicrystals, their approximants and some crystalline materials of related composition.Although covered by a layer of native Al2O3 oxide, wetting by water on these materials exhibits a clear correlation between the reversible adhesion energy of water and the bulk density of states at the Fermi energy. Similarly, in high vacuum, the friction coefficient measured in contact against a hard-steel rider is characteristically smaller than the one measured against conventional metallic alloys (including steel). Observing that wear is nearly non existent under such friction conditions, experiment allows us for the first time to derive a fair estimate of the true surface energy of quasicrystals and related complex metallic alloys. Similarly to wetting, the electronic density of states seems to determine the friction characteristics of these compounds.
