Résumé :
Abstract This article uncovers the hidden history of Desk and Derrick, a female-only petroleum industry employees’ club, to emphasize the importance of clerical work and support staff to oil industry development. In doing so, it demonstrates that despite the oil industry's mythology of individual inventors and lucky wildcatters, oil was remarkably similar to other large-scale scientific and engineering enterprises during the middle decades of the twentieth century. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, oil's white-collar and administrative jobs expanded rapidly. And in this industry as in others, women were fundamental to oil industry technological development and labor conflicts. Desk and Derrick's was a haven for working women, providing community, training, and leadership opportunities in an industry deeply hostile to female employees. The club provided numerous outreach and educational campaigns included seminars, workshops, fieldtrips, and conventions. These events showcased female competence and technical knowledge, clashing with union derision and corporate dismissal. The club's vocal emphasis on scientific education and credentialization represented a bid for female inclusion within an increasingly technically complex professional world. However, entrenched workplace sexism and union hostility to changing labor structures limited member opportunities. Ultimately, Desk and Derrick's middle-class aspirations allied the club with industry rebranding efforts and helped support industry automation and union-busting. Desk and Derrick valorized industry engineers and scientific professionals, spreading narratives of prosperity through technology that coincided with industry-wide efforts to repair oil companies’ reputations as greedy, wasteful, and exploitative. In turn, midcentury oil companies promoted Desk and Derrick as a convenient, grassroots way to spread their message.

Schuler, Douglas A. « A club theory approach to voluntary social programs : Multinational companies and the extractive industries transparency initiative ». Business and Politics 14, no 3 (octobre 2012) : 1–24. http://dx.doi.org/10.1515/bap-2012-0024.

Résumé :
This study uses club theory to describe the incentives of extractive industry MNCs to support the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), a multi-stakeholder promoted voluntary social program (VSP) aimed at creating national legislation to make the royalty payments received by governments from mining and oil and gas companies more transparent to the public. We characterize the EITI as a VSP that lacks stringent standards and that has a moderate to high level of enforcement through the national governments that have adopted its principles. According to club theory, VSPs with these characteristics produce only a low to medium level of club benefits, in this case “social branding,” for member firms. Noting that over 60 MNCs have signed on to the EITI as of April 2012, we argue that VSPs offering low to medium club benefits should be most attractive to MNCs from countries with long arm disclosure laws, to MNCs lacking relationships with NGOs seeking inexpensive CSR, to MNCs relying upon financing from institutional and social investors, to MNCs attempting to differentiate themselves from competitors on social criteria, and to MNCs with broad stakeholder-focused top managers. We also describe the implications for MNCs if the EITI were to include a more stringent set of social requirements.

Résumé :
In the latest court decision in the context of the “Prestige” case, post-Brexit legal complexities came to the forefront. The “London P&I Club” contested a Spanish court’s decision demanding compensation for an oil spill. Invoking arbitration, the Club sought to prevent enforcement of the Spanish judgment in the UK. However, the CJEU ruled the arbitration couldn’t block the Spanish judgment’s recognition. Challenging this, Justice Butcher of the London High Court found the CJEU had overstepped its jurisdiction. He concluded the arbitration proceedings could indeed impede the Spanish judgment’s enforcement, highlighting tensions between UK courts and CJEU post-Brexit, and raising critical questions about arbitration’s role in international disputes and the principles of irreconcilability and public policy.

This article examines the history of the Royal Dutch Shell scenarios, from the first horizon scan exercise in 1967. It proposes that forward-looking scenarios were integrated in planning at Shell as tools for managing uncertainty in global time and space relations of oil after 1967. Specifically, the article proposes that Shell strategically used the scenarios to respond to arguments, emanating both from OPEC and from the Club of Rome, of oil as a limited resource. Shell used the scenarios to create images of a future oil market dominated by innovation, creativity, and sustainable solutions.

Résumé :
There are a lot of misconceptions about the Owls Club, located at 378 N. Main Street in Tucson, Arizona. Many of these are the result of the popularity of the bachelors who formed Tucson's first men's club, The Owls, in the late nineteenth century. The restoration/renovation of the building in 1986 facilitated a revival of popular notions that the Owls Club served as a clubhouse for the gregarious society of men. However, by examining the building in its appropriate context of "Tucson Boosterism," different conclusions are drawn. Although the residence is connected with members of The Owls, the buildings construction after the organization's social and group emphasis had ended. Instead, research revealed that the Owls Club was designed as a single-family residence to promote the development of an elite Anglo neighborhood in Tucson while, simultaneously, reinforcing its patrons' position in society.

Tomasovic, Brian Scott. « Disjointed connections : the presidential permitting of tar sands oil pipelines at the U.S.-Canadian border ». Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2010-12-2536.

Résumé :
The fuel for dynamic change in the United State’s energy relationship with Canada lies in immense deposits of tar sands beneath the boreal forests of Alberta province. Unconventional production of oil from this resource has accelerated in recent years and remains poised for continued expansion, facilitated, in part, by plans to import tar sands crude through new pipelines to refineries in the United States. However, the development of this resource carries uniquely heavy environmental burdens, and U.S. environmental groups have challenged the process by which the United States authorizes cross-border oil pipelines. This thesis analyzes the presidential permitting process and concludes that executive or legislative action is necessary to eliminate legal uncertainties and improve the transparency and public acceptability of determinations that new cross-border pipelines are warranted.

The purpose of this report is to portray an internship experience as an Assistant Coach/Analyst in the context of a senior team of the Portugal Prio Championship. In soccer, it is considered the Observation and Analysis of teams increasingly important in obtaining a good yield. Investments are made in new technologies in this field, the behaviors of reference teams are studied, the aim is to quantify and qualify all kinds of actions of the game in order to justify and understand the results. However, at the level of observation and analysis of the own team, a very frequent methodology is to use the principles and standard behaviors to guide the evaluation of performance. It is in the qualitative analysis of these game concepts that this report focuses, searching to explain the Triad Game Model, Training Model and Analysis Model. In area 1, these three structuring concepts of the training methodology are presented (Game, Training and Analysis Model), as well as the connectivity relations that are established between them in the systemic modeling leading to team building. Emphasis was placed on the description of the principles and game behaviors intended (Game Model), the operationalization of these behaviors throughout the training process (Training Model) and, in the process of observation, analysis, interpretation and feedback of game performance (Analysis Model). The study accomplished in area 2 intends to demonstrate how Observation and Analysis of the own team can boost her performance, in the following game and over time. In this way was realized a collection of all the analyzes of game, of all the behaviors considered like to Maintain and to Improve of each game and it was tried to cross these behaviors with the factors as the Adversary Level and as Game Place, in order to draw conclusions that explain the influence of Observation and Analysis of the Own Team in the success in the same. Finally, in area 3, is described the project and balance of an event developed to add value to the community of coaches: Football Day at FMH 2017. The event "Training to Compete: The Different Dimensions of the Football Training Process" was intended to be as complete as possible, with specific professionals from the most varied areas of intervention in football.

AbstractThis chapter examines mourning practices on the basis of the German football club FC Schalke 04. This club, it argues, derives its current image and emotional templates from the mourning practices marking the end of coal mining in the region. Throughout the twentieth century, Schalke repeatedly became involved in participatory politics, despite its allegedly apolitical nature as a leisure club. Governments, political parties, and local magistrates sought to use Schalke fans’ emotional relationship with the club for their own ends. Because of its capacity to unite people in times of crisis, the club itself developed into a significant political player in its home city of Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, during the crises of deindustrialization in the mid-1990s.

Résumé :
Abstract Robert Burns’s experiences with club life were extensive, ranging from informal provincial groups like the Tarbolton Bachelors to international organizations like the Freemasons. Throughout his life, Burns was eminently clubbable, finding plenty of opportunities for intellectual and convivial fellowship with Scots of all classes. This chapter will discuss Burns’s involvement in a variety of clubs, including the Crochallan Fencibles (an Edinburgh drinking club), the Court of Equity (an impromptu club of local Scots castigated for profligacy by the Kirk), as well as those listed above. A primary goal of the chapter is to explain and elaborate upon how each club society influenced his writing, for each group to which he belonged offered him its own peculiar form of associational experience. In short, each club provided him with a different type of convivial sociability, to which Burns often responded in his writing. The chapter will include an overview of the verse that Burns produced in club settings as well as in his published work, with attention to his changing attitudes about convivial sociability.

Résumé :
Adequate management of football clubs is one of the conditions necessary for achieving good business and sports results. On the one hand, the boards of directors of football clubs must consist of educated, capable and professional persons who will take deliberate business moves. On the other hand, club owners must also be turned to the long-term interests of the club instead of their own personal interests. Certain mechanisms are necessary for achieving that. Serbian law contains certain provisions intended to raise the quality of corporate governance. Nevertheless, practice shows that the current situation in Serbian football requires certain reforms of corporate governance. In this paper, author paid attention to examining the existence of the need of the reform and possible directions of the reform of corporate governance of Serbian football clubs. Inspired by the current proposal for the reform of English football embodied by the so-called “White Paper”, author also analyzes the possibility of the aforementioned document to serve the Serbian legislator when considering the directions of possible future changes to existing legal solutions.

Résumé :
What happens when a diverse group of youth ages 11 through 14 are introduced to data science using authentic, public, multivariate data in an out-of-school context assuming no special prerequisite knowledge? We designed three 10-hour Data Club modules in which real-world data and the questions students asked of such data drove the learning process. Each module was grounded in a topic that youth connected with at a personal level. Youth learned how to use a free online data platform that made it easy to rearrange, group, filter, and graph data. Within the progression of the module, we used youths’ own questions, data moves, and data visualizations to engage them in critical inquiry and foster productive habits of mind for working with data. Our goal was for youth to emerge from the Data Clubs experience feeling empowered to interact with, ask questions of, and reason about and from data.

Résumé :
The relevance of the research topic is due to the fact that marketing in sports is an effective component of sports management, just as it is in other areas of management. Sports marketing has its own specific features based on the characteristics of a particular sport, and this article deals with football marketing. The purpose of this article is to reflect the results of the study of a sports club’s marketing activities. The object of the study is the regional football club “Nizhny Novgorod”(Russia). The main objectives of the study are to identify the factors that attract the fans’ interest to the football club, to attending matches and purchasing club merchandise. Based on a survey of Nizhny Novgorod residents, a study of football fans’ needs in the region was carried out and the target audience of the FC “Nizhny Novgorod” was determined. The results of the survey show that the fans are poorly motivated to attend football matches with the participation of this club. The potential of modern promotion methods such as social media marketing (SMM) is used insufficiently. There is a need to make a more active impact on football consumers in the region, to intensify the work with the fans of the club, to improve the quality and design of the club’s merchandise. As a result of our research, a series of measures have been developed aiming to involve fans in the club’s life, both on match days and between matches. These measures include: promoting season ticket sales, more effective use of the home stadium on match days, active work to attract families with children, organising family leisure at the stadium, stadium tours, activities outside the stadium – weekend events in the city’s parks. The value of the research findings presented in the article lies in identifying the need to create the conditions for a football feast based on football marketing methods, aiming to attract fans to the club.

Résumé :
Through the “COVID-Inspired Data Science through Epidemiology Education” project, 400 underserved middle-school youth across the United States are engaging in a 20-hour out-of-school data club centered on a novel. The narrative is integrated with hands-on data activities and modeling (e.g., creating graphs of infections over time in CODAP; modeling disease transmission rates in NetLogo). Youth learn to: 1) Use data tools to track the spread of a variety of infectious diseases; 2) Ask and address their own questions of data; and 3) Use data to communicate to local audiences about epidemiological patterns and challenges. The project breaks new ground in integrating data science with epidemiology education for 11–14-year-old youth.
