Résumé :
Abstract The topic of Otherness has been investigated from the point of view of popular culture and popular fiction studies, especially on the basis of the multiracial social environments of the United States. The challenges of addressing real or potential conflicts in areas characterised by an ethnic puzzle are to some extent similar, but at the same time differ substantively from the political, legal, and fictional world of “race.” This paper investigates these differences in the ways of overcoming ethnic stereotyping on the basis of examples taken from post-World War II crime fiction of Southern Europe, and Middle East. In communist and post-communist Eastern Central Europe there are not many instances of mediational crime fiction. This paper will point to the few, although notable exceptions, while hypothesizing on the factors that could favor in the foreseeable future the emergence and expansion of such artistic experiments in the multiethnic and multicultural province of Transylvania.

Résumé :
POWER INDUSTRY DYNAMICS The concept of modern world is imperfect without electricity. The development of modern gadgets in past two decades has made human living as reflection of a science fiction movie. The fiction like living’s axis in fact is electricity and without electricity every thing comes to a grinding halt. Though this picture is portrait of the developed world, yet everyone would agree that wherever electricity has reached, it has transformed everything into power reliant. Whether it is Pakistan or any third world country, the industry; the commerce; the banking system; the methods of teaching in educational institutions; hospitals; control systems of civil aviation and civic traffic systems; and the domestic living, everything revolves around electricity. Whenever there is any break in electricity supply, output of every segment of society drops down to its lowest ebb. Many segments such as process industry and hospitals require highly reliable power supply systems. Truly, electricity is no more a luxury available to rich only; it has now become a basic need. However, scientists have not yet fully succeed in overcoming the challenges posed by the dynamics of electricity. First of all their failure to store electricity on commercial scale has made it necessary to keep generating electricity all the time. However, managing the generation quantum to meet the varying intra-day and inter-day power demand at places which are hundreds of miles apart require dedicated and sophisticated transmission and distribution infrastructure. The problem accentuated in countries like Pakistan where the generation capacity reduces in winter due to lower availability of its hydro power plants and lower availability of gas for thermal generation plants. The transmission cum distribution infrastructure as well as installation cum operations of power generating plants is very capital intensive. Hence it is very difficult for the governments and / or power utilities to develop the generation capacity and the transmission cum distribution network all by itself.

Résumé :
Abstract: For decades, literature has played a vital role in the feminist movement. Fiction helps to look at the challenges of women on various levels, whether in the workplace, family, emotional, or physical. Over the years, writers have written fiction to depict women's challenges and their brilliance and determination in overcoming them. Amitav Ghosh is one such writer who has often depicted women who put their heart and soul into it when it comes to achieving their goals. Both in personal and professional life. Ghosh's novel The Hungry Tide depicts working women who put their best foot forward despite sexual assault, caste discrimination, and financial difficulties. A cetologist named Piyali Roy comes to Lusibari for her work. Despite the sexual harassment, she finds a way to achieve her dream of studying dolphins. Financial and caste barriers confront Moyna, but she still finds a way to survive by studying and working as a nurse. Nilima is being called to serve the Sundarbans' people. She tries to fit herself into the system to ensure that the Lusibari people have as many facilities as possible. Kusum finds herself in the most difficult of all female characters. She loses her mother as a child, and her husband when she was young, and almost becomes a victim of sex traffickers. The novel depicts the challenges as well as the unbreakable spirit of women vividly.

Millman, Sophia. « Simone de Beauvoir's Struggle against Separation : Radical Challenges to Heterosexual Norms in Les inséparables and "La lesbienne" ». Women in French Studies 31, no 1 (2023) : 40–50. http://dx.doi.org/10.1353/wfs.2023.a909477.

Résumé :
Abstract: Today, we face an epidemic of loneliness and Simone de Beauvoir's writings about separation—and about struggling to find new means of connecting—have never been more relevant. Throughout her fiction and philosophy, Beauvoir repeatedly wrote about women's desires to "shatter" what separated them. The theme of overcoming separation appears in "La lesbienne," a controversial chapter of Le deuxième sexe , and reappears in her novella Les inséparables , drafted in 1954 but only published in 2020. This article—the first study of the theme of separation in several of Beauvoir's works—situates these two texts within a twenty-year period. From 1944, when Beauvoir published Pyrrhus et Cinéas , to 1964, when she gave her lecture "Que peut la littérature ?," her thinking about separation and connection transformed radically. The author became increasingly committed to exposing and fighting against the heterosexual norms that separate women. Ultimately, Les inséparables , read in conjunction with "La lesbienne," illuminates Beauvoir's various writings about separation; the novella reveals that her revolutionary commitment to breaking taboos and connecting with readers grew out of the shame and frustration she experienced as she tried to communicate her love to another woman.

Résumé :
The spread of the digital economy brings about many benefits, for example in terms of growth, employment and well-being more generally. These challenges extend well beyond domestic and international tax policy and touch upon areas such as international privacy law and data protection, as well as accounting and regulation, a strategic tax policy perspective, the uptake of digital technologies may potentially constrain the options available to policymakers in relation to the overall tax mix. Technological innovation and the growth of the Internet have profoundly affected trade relations, production processes and products, and the organization of companies. The digital economy is characterized by several key elements, such as the massive expansion of intangible assets; intensive use of data (especially personal data), and widespread adoption of multi-faceted business models that exploit the value externalities of free assets. As the digital economy brings us into new territory, is fair taxation fiction or reality? Although overcoming the numerous ch a l l en g es will be a difficult task for policy makers , fair taxation of the digital e c o n o m y is a reality. A prerequisite to making real sustainable change is enthusiastic country commitment and international cooperation. Asia and the Pacific region need to pull together and push forward the necessary reforms, innovate tax structures and administration, and continue to learn from each other’s experiences. Other key enablers include a coherent strategy and strong evidence-based communication and knowledge.

Résumé :
Actual scientific researches and issues analysis. Hundreds of thorough works have been devoted to various aspects of democratic theory and the practical difficulties of its implementation. The most coherent with the subject matter of this study is the fundamental monograph by Oleksandr Skrypniuk, as well as numerous publications by Alain de Benoist, Jason Brennan, Ralph Darendorf, John Ecton, Kevin Eliot, Jacques Ellul, Kevin Calhoun, Helen Landmore, Giovanni Sartori, Tomislav Sutic, Richard Tuck, and Tsvetan Todorov. The research objective. The solution of problematic challenges in the sphere of functioning and prospects of development of democracy requires systematisation of the shortcomings of democracy of the modern model and identification of mechanisms for overcoming them at the level of social practices. The statement of basic material. In our time, what is called “democratic choice” is mostly an illusion, a fiction of full-fledged choice: it is “choice in the actual absence of choice” when one has to choose among pseudo-alternatives imposed by the information agenda. These quasi-alternatives may have nothing to do with the interests and needs of the people. Democracy of modern quality is more and more an instrument of information suggestion and propaganda manipulation.

Abstract The paper tackles the remediation of the newest kinds of (re-)writing and reappropriation practices originating online in Emmanuelle Pireyre’s Féerie générale (2012). Approached from an intermedial perspective, the study of Pireyre’s “kaleidoscopic” novelistic prose allows to posit that: firstly, a traditionally published novel appealing to reading practices cultivated and developed online (e.g., “literacies” and reading skills exercised in the course of meme-sharing) amounts to representing the digital in an elaborately indirect and non-referential way as opposed to its ekphrastic figuration or sheer thematization. And secondly, that a traditionally published novel brought to relating the character’s on-screen experience of interacting with digital-born forms of writing (e.g., fanfiction) is to be regarded as an inherently literary, self-reflective strategy aimed at overcoming the typical challenges of digital media and cyber-culture representation by means of novelistic fiction.

Résumé :
The article is devoted to the study of narrative and genre features of the famous work of Nelle Harper Lee ‟To Kill a Mockingbird”. It considers such categories of poetics as composition, chronotope and a system of characters. The study analyses the theme of maturation and the traits of ‟southern noir”, traditional and innovative characteristics of the initiation novel. Due to these peculiarities the American writer is not only able to focus on the inner life of the main heroine, but also to present the historical and cultural background of the narrative, as well as to create expressive psychological portraits of the characters. The conclusion is made about the transfer of ideas from human personality formation and maturation to the ethno-racial context, the formation of a specific model of initiation in the American literature. The process of migration of adult literature in children’s literature is noted both at the level of individual storylines and entire narratives. The novel by Harper Lee contains the traits of the initiation novel, as the main semantic dominant theme is maturation through overcoming challenges (social injustice, cruelty, ambivalence of the categories of good and evil). The concept of becoming a person in the work of the writer refers to the origins of the national consciousness: the interaction of nature and civilization, natural and artificial, as well as aesthetic categories of fiction and reality.

Hackenberg, Sara. « “The Magician of Civilised Life” : The Literary Detective in Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s Early Penny Fiction ». Victorian Popular Fictions Journal 4, no 2 (2023) : 63–79. http://dx.doi.org/10.46911/lfge1487.

Résumé :
Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s responses in her earliest novels to the mid-century city mysteries genre – an internationally popular form of penny fiction – allowed her to develop the detective genre in important ways. While attention to Braddon’s early work usually considers how it helped to establish the “sensation” fiction of the 1860s, this article examines how Braddon’s embrace of the earlier urban mysteries narrative both advanced the evolution of the Mysteries genre in the second half of the century and brought its maverick, socially marginal detective characters to new audiences. I argue that because of their roots in the penny Mysteries, Braddon’s detective characters act as agents of social equity rather than figures of surveillance, and they work to challenge many of the social hierarchies, stereotypes, and prejudices that form and undermine “civilised life,” often by magically dismantling or overcoming them.

Résumé :
This chapter challenges David Scott’s contention that we should shift from Romance to tragedy in recounting the history of colonialism’s overcoming. This shift in genre means, for Scott, moving from a pre-Foucauldian understanding of power to a Foucauldian view in which the institutions of colonial modernity produce the colonized subject—and hence, cannot be meaningfully overthrown. J. G. Farrell’s The Siege of Krishnapur and Marlon James’s The Book of Night Women subvert Scott’s oppositions and reveal the limits of his prescriptions. Farrell’s text develops a satirical form that, in its depiction of the Indian Mutiny, exposes British power-knowledge as an ideological mystification for which there is indeed an “outside”—namely, the Indians’ insurrectionary agency. James’s text shows how power on the colonial plantation relied on the spectacle of the scaffold rather than the insidious tentacles of disciplinary power. The scaffold functioned to prohibit both full humanity and interracial “love,” Enlightenment promises that only the violence of slave rebellion could hope to fulfil.

Fernando, B. S. C. « Creating realistic and safe "Dummy Props" for medical drama and action scenes ». Dans Awakening the economy through design innovation. Department of Integrated Design, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.31705/idr.2023.5.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The film industry, as a captivating visual medium, thrives on its ability to intertwine reality and fiction, captivating audiences with compelling storylines. At the heart of film production lies the significance of props, instrumental in bringing characters to life and shaping the narrative. These inanimate objects serve as the backdrop to characters, establish settings, time periods, and cultural contexts, and often act as powerful symbols influencing societal trends. This research delves into the creation of realistic medical props for medical drama (films) scenes, where real props are not viable due to safety concerns. The challenge lies in crafting dummy props that convincingly mimic real objects, ensuring the safety of actors while maintaining an immersive experience for audiences. While international film industries rely on specialized design agencies and facilities, the Sri Lankan film industry faces limitations in accessing such resources and dedicated design institutes. Therefore, the creation of low-cost yet authentic props becomes a significant obstacle. To address this, the research combines technical expertise, medical knowledge, technical skills, and hands-on experience to develop props adhering to safety standards while upholding a high level of realism. These props enhance storytelling in medical dramas (films), providing a compelling and immersive experience. Creating realistic and safe props commences with a meticulous analysis of the film’s script and scene requirements. For medical drama scenes, extensive research into medical equipment, procedures, and terminology ensures accuracy and authenticity. Consultation with medical experts provides valuable insights during the design process, while material selection ensures the dummy props closely resemble their real counterparts in appearance and texture. Medical sequences demand props that can withstand physical interactions without endangering actors. Throughout the creation process, continuous collaboration between prop designers, directors, and actors is crucial to ensure seamless integration of props into the film’s narrative and performances. Visual representations and simulations aid in refining functionality and appearance, resulting in a coherent visual style aligned with the film’s vision. In conclusion, this research successfully demonstrates the creation of realistic and safe props for medical drama (films) in the Sri Lankan film industry. The fusion of technical expertise, medical knowledge, and creative ingenuity has produced props that elevate the cinematic experience while prioritizing actor safety. By overcoming limitations in accessing specialized design agencies, this research offers a practical and cost-effective solution catering to the unique needs of the Sri Lankan film industry, contributing to its growth and development.
