Résumé :
Abstract Introduction: Pancreatic cystic lesions (PCL) are common and a subset of mucinous cysts will transform into pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, predicting which of these mucinous PCL may progress to PDAC and warrant surgery remains a clinical challenge. Moreover, identifying those clinically emergent mucinous PCL for which a surveillance approach is best is a dire clinical need. Therefore, we aimed to identify molecular signatures that distinguished between PDAC with and without clinical evidence of a PCL to identify novel biomarkers. Methods: We leveraged data from the Oncology Research Information Exchange Network (ORIEN) multi-institute sequencing project and analyzed 66 PDAC cases recruited to ORIEN from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Moffitt Cancer Center for which tumor whole transcriptome sequencing datasets were generated. We separated the cases based on whether a tumor had originated from a cystic lesion (n=16) or presumably through the pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN) pathway (n=50). We then performed differential expression and pathway analysis using both Gene-Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) and Pathway Analysis with Down-weighted Genes (PADOG) algorithms. Based on the emerging importance of the immune landscape in PDAC development, we also analyzed immune profiles using a novel tool, Tumor-immune Microenvironment Deconvolution Web-portal for Bulk Transcriptomics (TIMEx). Results: When grouped by tumor origin, cyst-derived PDAC gene expression sets are enriched in immune signaling pathways, specifically NOTCH signaling (p=0.04), and demonstrate significant downregulation in amino acid metabolism, mitochondrial import and Gsα signaling pathways. Furthermore, GSEA based on TIMEx signatures indicated that multiple immune cell-specific profiles had significant enrichment scores in either the cyst-derived (for example, plasma cell: normalized enrichment score=-1.53; p=0.007) or non-cyst-derived (for example, neutrophil: normalized enrichment score=2.24; p=0.0001) PDAC cohorts. Conclusions: Our data suggest that cyst-derived and non-cyst-derived PDACs differ by immune profile, enhanced NOTCH pathway usage and in the metabolic processing of multiple amino acids. These initial findings support future studies to assess the accuracy of risk stratifying PCLs based on their amino acid, metabolic, or immune profiles, and exploration into mechanisms to explain these findings. Résumé :
The Problem. Universities struggle to create cultures that provide a welcoming home for women and underrepresented minorities. Department chairs often emerge reluctantly from among the faculty and are ill prepared to engage faculty and staff to achieve deep culture change, yet their role is vital if such change is to occur. The Solution. Recognizing a need for a completely new type of leader, Ohio State created the President and Provost’s Leadership Institute (PPLI) to develop a pool of women and underrepresented minority faculty who might move into leadership positions. The Stakeholders. The PPLI can provide a useful template for HRD practitioners who wish to tailor leadership development and succession planning strategies to address higher education’s unique culture and leadership pool challenges. For institutions interested in broadening the diversity of individuals prepared to lead, and developing leaders prepared to lead change, the PPLI is an example of one successful approach.

The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Pierre Agostini of Ohio State University, Ferenc Krausz of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics and the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich and Anne L’Huillier of the Lund University for "experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter". The Prize acknowledges the tremendous experimental progress in the past 35 years that eventually enabled the investigation of the fastest electron transition processes in atoms, molecules and solids by using state-of-the-art femtosecond laser technology. As a result, a new field of research emerged and shortly after the establishment of the field of femtochemistry, attophysics came of age.

Résumé :
AbstractRabi to Pawsey 31 October 1961:By 1960, radio astronomy was flourishing in the USA. The pace of development had greatly intensified from 1955 to 1960. Radio astronomy had developed in multiple groups spread across the country, a very different pattern from the single Australian group and the two groups in the UK. By 1957 the universities of California (Berkeley), Cornell, Harvard, Ohio State and Stanford all had active radio astronomy programs. At the Carnegie Institute Department of Terrestrial Magnetism (DTM), Franklin and Burke had discovered the intense bursts of radio emission from Jupiter, and the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) had made detailed studies of the thermal emission from the moon and the planets using their 50-foot dish. Following the detection of the 21 cm hydrogen line by Ewen and Purcell at Harvard, Bart Bok (Harvard astronomy department) had built up a group of astronomers focussed on the interpretation of observations of the 21 cm hydrogen line. As noted by Kellermann et al. (Open Skies, 2020, p. 54), the Harvard project was managed by astronomers and not by radio scientists as in Australia and the UK. Many of these Harvard graduates were to become members of the NRAO scientific staff, a very different team composition than the instrumentally based groups of radio scientists and engineers that dominated the Australian groups.

Résumé :
When the domestic and international travel restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic made face-to-face training and professional development activities impossible, organizations needed to shift rapidly to a virtual format. One such organization, the DACUM International Training Center at The Ohio State University's Center on Education and Training for Employment, was forced to reimagine its five-day, in-person DACUM Institute—a workshop with a 35-year history of training human resources and learning and development professionals in the DACUM method of job analysis. This chapter examines the opportunities presented by and the challenges inherent in deconstructing this face-to-face experience and reimagining it as a virtual one, the DACUM Virtual Institute. This online program, a mix of synchronous and asynchronous learning activities, puts into practice learning design methodologies and learner experience design principles to capture the essential components of the in-person workshop experience while also leveraging new opportunities afforded by virtual and online learning.

Résumé :
Abstract In 1998 the Appalachian Partnership for Welfare Reform (APWR) was established as a collaborative, applied-research, and technical-assistance program funded by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) and administered by the Institute for Local Government Administration and Rural Development (ILGARD) at Ohio University’s Voinovich Center for Leadership and Public Affairs. After five years as a grant-funded project focused on implementing policy changes in the areas of public assistance administration and workforce development at the county level in Ohio Appalachia, the APWR became a statewide technical assistance contract between the ODJFS Office of Family Stability (OFS) and ILGARD focused on strengthening performance measurement and accountability structures throughout the state of Ohio. The primary aim of APWR was to help enhance administrative infrastructure and capacity among the 29 APWR county agency partners implementing welfare reform throughout Ohio Appalachia. Among our principle activities, developing evaluation and performance measurement capacity was one of the APWR’s biggest and most interesting challenges. This chapter describes the historical and social context of the APWR and outlines the Ongoing Performance Measurement and Management (OPM&M) framework that we used to develop processes intended to enhance evaluation capacity in this Central Appalachian setting.

Résumé :
Abstract The responsibility for preservation and distribution of DNA clones for molecular genetic research and the genome project in Arabidopsis is shared by two centres, the Arabidopsis Biological Resource Centre (ABRC), Ohio State University, which was established in September 1991, and the European Community DNA Stock Centre at the Max-Planck Institute in Kñln, Germany. In addition to DNA resources, the ABRC shares responsibility for seed stock preservation and distribution and dissemination of information for the Arabidopsis community. Hence the DNA laboratory is integrated with the centre’s other services, allowing these complementary efforts to be fully co-ordinated. While preservation of biological resources including DNA is a primary function of the stock centres, they also strive to serve the rapidly changing needs of plant molecular biology research. This review will address the practical problems associated with all aspects of the ABRC DNA operation. Protocols utilized for clone characterization, preservation, and dissemination will be featured. Other topics which will be discussed are the philosophy of DNA centre operation, organization of information relating to DNA stocks, and the future of DNA centre operations.

Andreas Pfaltz of the University of Basel and Keisuke Suzuki of the Tokyo Institute of Technology showed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 881) that the iodohydrin of 1 did not interfere with the enantioselective hydrogenation. J. R. Falck of UT Southwestern developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 2424) a procedure for coupling arene boronic acids with a cyano triflate 3, readily available in high ee from the corresponding aldehyde. Anita R. Maguire of University College Cork devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 1184) a Cu catalyst for the enantioselective C-H insertion cyclization of 5 to 6. Jin-Quan Yu of Scripps/La Jolla established (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 460) a complementary enantioselective C-H functionalization protocol, converting the prochiral 7 into 8 in high ee. Xumu Zhang of Rutgers University effected (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 4047) enantioselective branching hydroformylation of 9 to give 10. T. V. RajanBabu of Ohio State University established (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 3295) the enantioselective hydrovinylation of a diene 11 to the diene 12. Gregory C. Fu extended (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 1264, 5010) Ni-mediated cross-coupling, both with alkenyl and aryl nucleophiles, to the racemic bromoketone 13. Hyeung-geun Park and Sang-sup Jew of Seoul National University used (Organic Lett. 2010, 12 , 2826) their asymmetric phase transfer protocol to effect the enantioselective alkylation of the amide 15. Kyung Woon Jung of the University of Southern California showed (J. Org. Chem. 2010, 75, 95) that the oxidative Pd-mediated Heck coupling of arene boronic acids to 17 could be effected in high ee. Nicolai Cramer of ETH Zurich observed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 5340) high enantioinduction in the cleavage of the prochiral cyclobutanol 19. Alexandre Alexakis of the University of Geneva achieved (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 1988) the long-sought goal of efficient enantioselective conjugate addition of a Grignard reagent to an unsaturated aldehyde 21. Professor Alexakis also established (Organic Lett. 2010, 12, 2770) conditions for enantioselective conjugate addition to a nitrodiene 23. This procedure worked equally well for β-alkynyl nitroalkenes.

Résumé :
Abstract Though quite busy, E. M. Martin, secretary of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, affably gave me much time, and proved to be a good talker. He is a sturdily built, sharp-featured man with shrewd eyes; his color is that of sunburned white Southerners; his thin, graying hair is straight. He is energetic and forceful, and from all quarters I heard that he was a resourceful business man. One of his immediate concerns was an eight millimeter technicolor motion picture called “The Parade of Negro Progress” that the Atlanta Life Company had been exhibiting throughout the South. The picture took two years and a lot of money to make, he told me. The machinery belonged to the company and a photographer was employed for the filming and showing. Martin candidly admitted that the primary object of the film was to make money, but in a clean honest way, he said, “to build friendships, and to show others what we’re doing. Many Negro schoolboys in their history classes learned only one thing pertaining to the Negro and that is that Lincoln freed the slaves.” The picture stresses the “highlights of Negro life,” with such items as the Negro hospital in St. Louis, a commencement at Atlanta University, the new plant at the Tennessee A & I State College at Nashville, the celebration at Daytona Cookman Institute when Mrs. Roosevelt went down there on Mrs. Bethune’s anniversary; Negro farmers in southwest Georgia with large mechanized farms, warehouses, fine mule and horse teams, well-fed cattle, and tractors at work in the fields; hair-dressing establishments; the bank in Atlanta; girls at the intricate statistical machines in the Atlanta Life offices; gas stations owned and manned by Negroes; Paul Laurence Dunbar’s home in Dayton, Ohio; green troops marching in the camps; Negro pilots taking off at Tuskegee; Dean William Pickens selling bonds. And so the list went. “It would be an all-day proposition if we showed all the stuff,” Martin said. So it was edited to meet local interest, with the school and church stuff varying according to the section. When shown in Texas, for instance, a few Texas churches and schools would be spliced in.

Due to the increasing complexity of cities, it is necessary more than ever to have tools that help us understand its urban processes, anticipate unwanted futures and foresee the effects of urban politics in cities before they are applied. Even more, such tools must be designed according to the necessities of each place in which they are going to be applied. In 2002 a project called Urban Growth Simulator (UGS) was initiated developed by the Applied Geography Laboratory of the Department of Geography of Kent State University that allowed to make simulations for Northeast Ohio as a mean of support to planning and evaluation of land use policies, characterized for its simplicity of use as for its flexibility for the input of a variety of data to be taken into account in the simulation, outputting a map and quantitative data for the evaluation of different scenarios of growth, providing critical information for decision taking about land use policies. This process is described in this work, in which the origin and experiences of the UGS in the USA is mentioned, its original functionality is characterized and the purposes of its adaptation are mentioned as well as modifications are explained. Last, an example of the software is shown as applied to the agricultural valley of Maneadero in the city of Ensenada, in which results are shown of what could happen by applying various urban development policies. It concludes with future adaptations that are planned to be done to the UGS.

Résumé :
The University of Michigan is leading a team that includes subcontractors Ohio State University, Aquaveo, LLC, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute to design, implement, and test an Environmental and Ship Motion Forecasting (ESMF) system. The system has application to many challenges associated with offshore operations, including skin-to-skin transfer of cargo/personnel and extreme wave/response prediction. Briefly, the system uses a modified commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) Doppler marine radar to determine the wave field surrounding the vessel; nonlinear wave theory to propagate the wave surface forward in time; and seakeeping theory to predict future vessel motions. A major challenge is that all computations must be done in real time. This paper will briefly describe the system and show an example application of predicting extreme waves and motions for a floating offshore type platform.

Résumé :
Abstract Temper bead (TB) welding is often used as an alternative to post weld heat treatment (PWHT) for repair of pressure vessels and piping in the nuclear power industry. Historically, qualification of TB welding procedures has employed the Charpy V-notch test to ensure acceptable heat-affected-zone (HAZ) impact properties. The 2004 Edition of ASME Section IX provided a new provision in QW-290 that allows temper bead qualification using a peak hardness criterion. The peak hardness provision is appropriate for industries such as oil and gas, where peak allowable hardness is specified to ensure adequate resistance to sulfide stress cracking in sour service environments. However, a peak hardness criterion is not appropriate where impact properties are specified for resistance to brittle fracture during low temperature conditions that can occur during certain postulated accident scenarios at a nuclear power plant. Work at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and The Ohio State University (OSU) show that a hardness drop protocol can be used to demonstrate acceptable impact properties in the HAZ of a temper bead weld. This paper presents a quantitative correlation between hardness measurements and HAZ microstructures with presumed optimum impact properties using a hardness drop approach. The overarching goal is to develop a hardness test protocol for temper bead weld procedure qualification for applications where impact properties are specified.

Résumé :
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper details the advancements and outcomes of the NEXTCAR (Next-Generation Energy Technologies for Connected and Automated on-Road Vehicles) program, an initiative led by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The program focusses on harnessing the full potential of Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) technologies to develop advanced vehicle dynamic and powertrain control technologies (VD&amp;PT). These technologies have shown the capability to reduce energy consumption by 20% in conventional and hybrid electric cars and trucks at automation levels L1-L3 and by 30% L4 fully autonomous vehicles. Such reductions could lead to significant energy savings across the entire U.S. vehicle fleet. This study summarizes the results from Phases I and II of the NEXTCAR program, highlighting the contributions of four teams that participated in both phases: Southwest Research Institute, Michigan Technical University, Ohio State University, and the University of California, Berkeley. The study details the technologies developed by each team, including eco-routing, power-split optimization, cooperative driving, blended mode, speed harmonization, predictive cruise control, charge-sustaining engine on/off optimizer, and eco-approach and departure, among other innovative solutions. It outlines the energy savings achieved by these innovations. These technologies have experimentally demonstrated significant energy savings, ranging from 10-30%, while maintaining travel times.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">Additionally, the paper examines the challenges in commercializing these technologies and highlights ARPA-E's envisioned actions to provide a unified testing environment for all teams. This environment will allow for the assessment of all developed technologies under similar conditions, aiming to overcome the limitations of standardized Environmental Protection Agency EPA testing cycles and more accurately reflect real-world driving conditions. This approach validates the effectiveness of CAV technologies and supports their commercialization.</div></div>

Résumé :
Despite progress in COVID-19 vaccination rates overall in Cleveland, vaccine inequity persists as young people from minoritised communities are often less likely to be vaccinated. Despite being over-represented in COVID-19 case counts and fatalities, Black residents were under-represented in COVID-19 vaccination during the first year and half of the pandemic. In Ohio, while roughly 60% of Cuyahoga County residents are fully vaccinated, just 45% of Cleveland residents are fully vaccinated. Lower-income, majority Black, east side neighbourhoods have markedly lower vaccination rates compared to higher-income, mostly white neighbourhoods. Young people ages 16-40 became eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine on March 29th, 2021, and individuals aged 12 and above were able to get vaccinated from May 2021 onward. However, large disparities exist based age, race, and zip code. This brief illustrates underlying reasons shaping COVID-19 vaccine attitudes among minority (especially Black and Latinx) youth (ages 12-18) and offers key considerations for how young people can be better engaged within Cleveland, Ohio. This brief is based on research, including in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with 61 young people across 16 neighbourhoods through a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) approach in Cleveland to contextualise youth perspectives of COVID-19 vaccination and highlight areas of hesitancy and confidence. In this brief, we share findings from the study and key considerations for addressing youth ‘vaccine hesitancy’ around the COVID-19 vaccine are presented. This brief was authored by Jillian Schulte (Case Western Reserve University), Megan Schmidt-Sane (IDS), Elizabeth Benninger (Cleveland State University), Tabitha Hrynick (IDS), and Santiago Ripoll (IDS), and includes contributions from Elizabeth Davies (Cleveland State University), Diane Mastnardo, Brenda Pryor (MyCom), Brinda Athreya (Case Western Reserve University), Ivis Maldonado (MyCom) and reviews from Elizabeth Storer (LSE) and Annie Wilkinson (IDS). The research was funded through the British Academy COVID-19 Recovery: USA and UK fund (CRUSA210022). Research was based at the Institute of Development Studies.
