Résumé :
We find that the IIA matrix models defined on the non-compact C3/Z6, C2/Z2 and C2/Z4 orbifolds preserve supersymmetry where the fermions are on-mass-shell Majorana–Weyl fermions. In these examples supersymmetry is preserved both in the orbifolded space and in the non-orbifolded space at the same time. The matrix model on C3/Z6 orbifold has the same [Formula: see text] supersymmetry as the case of C3/Z3 orbifold which was pointed out previously. On the other hand the matrix models on C2/Z2 and C2/Z4 orbifold have a half of the [Formula: see text] supersymmetry. We further find that the matrix model on C2/Z2 orbifold with a parity-like identification preserves [Formula: see text] supersymmetry.

Résumé :
Superstring models on Weyl orbifolds are investigated in [Formula: see text] heterotic string theories. Some of the Weyl orbifold models are shown to be consistent with worldsheet supersymmetry, N=1 spacetime supersymmetry and modular invariance. Two ways of embedding in [Formula: see text] are studied and residual gauge groups are classified.

Résumé :
We consider orbifolds of two-dimensional unitary toroidal superconformal field theories with target spaces of arbitrary dimensions, where the orbifold group involves the space–time fermion number operator. We construct all so-called superaffine, orbifold prime and super-M-orbifold models by generalizing the constructions of Dixon, Ginsparg and Harvey. We also correct claims made by Dixon, Ginsparg and Harvey about multicritical points among those models with central charge [Formula: see text].

Résumé :
Orbifolds in field theory are potentially singular objects for at their fixed points the curvature becomes infinite, therefore one may wonder whether field theory calculations near orbifold singularities can be trusted. String theory is perfectly well defined on orbifolds and can therefore be taken as a UV completion of field theory on orbifolds. We investigate the properties of field and string theory near orbifold singularities by reviewing the computation of a one-loop gauge field tadpole. We find that in string theory the twisted states give contributions that have a spread of a couple of string lengths around the singularity, but otherwise the field theory picture is confirmed. One additional surprise is that in some orbifold models one can identify local tachyons that give contributions near the orbifold fixed point.

Résumé :
We demonstrate how to find modular discrete symmetry groups for ZN orbifolds. The Z7 orbifold is treated in detail as a nontrivial example of a (2, 2) orbifold model. We give the generators of the modular group for this case which, surprisingly, does not contain SL (2; Z)3 as had been speculated. The treatment models with discrete Wilson lines are also discussed. We consider examples which demonstrate that discrete Wilson lines affect the modular group in a nontrivial manner. In particular, we show that it is possible for a Wilson line to break SL (2, Z).

Résumé :
By introducing the spin field into the Thirring string formulation we complete its conformal algebra and hence construct the generators of the Affine algebra SÛ2L×SÛ2R within the formulation. We present two methods of constructing C=1 orbifolds. In the first, Thirring strings are defined on the double cover of the punctured complex plane; in the second we introduce an analogue of the orbifold space group and use it, along with the known factorization properties of the four-twist correlation function, to deduce the operator product algebra of twist fields. Finally as an application of the formulation we demonstrate the well-known equivalence of free strings compactified on the circle and orbifold at the multicritical point.

Résumé :
We have investigated matrix factorisations of polynomials corresponding to vari-ous Landau-Ginzburg models with N = 2 supersymmetry. These are non-conformal Lagrangian models with specific super-potentials and are thought to flow to a renor-malisation group fixed point, which correspond to conformal field theories. Matrix factorisations can be used to construct BRST type operators which have a basis of states which correspond to the chiral primaries of the CFTs confirming the corre-spondence. We look at how these matrix factorisations can be created from exact sequences and put this into practice using the homological algebra package, Singu-lar, to create exact sequences/free resolutions from a restricted list of ideals thereby producing a matrix factorisation factory whose only input is the potential. We man-aged to construct all ADE indecomposable matrix factorisations from simple ideals built from generators in the quotient ring. As a side result, this procedure required the development of a simple algorithm to identify isomorphic matrix factorisations. We also make some statements about invertibility of matrix elements and factors in order to discuss and where other Lagrangian, conformal theories, such as Liouville might fit in this correspondence. The main body of work concentrates on the nature of orbifold equivalence. This is an aspect of topological field theories with defects. We analyse the nature of the quantum dimension formula making some interesting discoveries which we use to refine a procedure to find such orbifold equivalences. This procedure was eventually successful, in theory only limited by computer power, and we review the current updated cataloge of orbifold equivalences and discuss the some implications of our findings and observations on such equivalences.

Résumé :
Mirror symmetry has been a significant area of research for geometry and physics for over two decades. Berglund and Hubsch proposed that for a certain family of singularities W, the so called "transposed" singularity WT should be the mirror partner of W. cite{BH} The techniques for constructing the orbifold LG models to test this conjecture were developed by FJR in cite{FJR} with a cohomological field theory generalized from the study of r-spin curves. The duality of LG A- and B-models became more elaborate when Krawitz cite{Krawitz} generalized the Intriligator-Vafa orbifold B-model to include contributions from more than one sector. This thesis presents a program written in Maple for explicitly computing bases for both LG A- and B-model rings, as well as the correlators for A-models to the extent of current knowledge. Included is a list of observations and conjectures drawn from computations done in the program.

Résumé :
We study some perturbative and nonperturbative effects in the framework of the Standard Model of particle physics. In particular we consider the time dependence of the Higgs vacuum expectation value given by the dynamics of the StandardModel and study the non-adiabatic production of both bosons and fermions, which is intrinsically non-perturbative. In theHartree approximation, we analyze the general expressions that describe the dissipative dynamics due to the backreaction of the produced particles. Then, we solve numerically some relevant cases for the Standard Model phenomenology in the regime of relatively small oscillations of the Higgs vacuum expectation value (vev). As perturbative effects, we consider the leading logarithmic resummation in small Bjorken x QCD, concentrating ourselves on the Nc dependence of the Green functions associated to reggeized gluons. Here the eigenvalues of the BKP kernel for states of more than three reggeized gluons are unknown in general, contrary to the large Nc limit (planar limit) case where the problem becomes integrable. In this contest we consider a 4-gluon kernel for a finite number of colors and define some simple toy models for the configuration space dynamics, which are directly solvable with group theoretical methods. In particular we study the depencence of the spectrum of thesemodelswith respect to the number of colors andmake comparisons with the planar limit case. In the final part we move on the study of theories beyond the Standard Model, considering models built on AdS5 S5/Γ orbifold compactifications of the type IIB superstring, where Γ is the abelian group Zn. We present an appealing three family N = 0 SUSY model with n = 7 for the order of the orbifolding group. This result in a modified Pati–Salam Model which reduced to the StandardModel after symmetry breaking and has interesting phenomenological consequences for LHC.
