Résumé :
One of the key technologies in future optoelectronics is control of excitons in oxide materials by the coupling with plasmons on noble metal surfaces. Optical properties of ZnO nanowires decorated with Au nanoparticles were studied to understand fundamental mechanism of the coupling and to develop optoelectronic devices with new functionalities. Light intensity at the main peak position in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of ZnO nanowires was enhanced with the coverage of Au nanoparticles. Lifetime of excitons excited optically decreased by the decoration of Au nanoparticles. Understanding of the coupling between excitons and plasmons leads to optical control of excitons and will pave the way for new type of optoelectronic devices.

Résumé :
Iron oxide nanoparticles, especially hematite (α-Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4) have attained substantial research interest in various applications of green and sustainable energy harnessing owing to their exceptional opto-magneto-electrical characteristics and non-toxicity. In this study, we synthesized high-purity hematite and magnetite nanoparticles from a facile top-down approach by employing a high-energy ball mill followed by ultrasonication. A systematic investigation was then carried out to explore the structural, morphological, thermal, optoelectrical, and magnetic properties of the synthesized samples. The experimental results from scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction corroborated the formation of highly crystalline hematite and magnetite nanoparticles with average sizes of ~80 nm and ~50 nm, respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed remarkable results on the thermal stability of the newly synthesized samples. The optical studies confirmed the formation of a single-phase compound with the bandgaps dependent on the size of the nanoparticles. The electrochemical studies that utilized cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques verified these iron oxide nanoparticles as electroactive species which can enhance the charge transfer process with high mobility. The hysteresis curves of the samples revealed the paramagnetic behavior of the samples with high values of coercivity. Thus, these optimized materials can be recommended for use in future optoelectronic devices and can prove to be potential candidates in the advanced research of new optoelectronic materials for improved energy devices.

Résumé :
Tin oxide (SnO2 ) and (1 wt%, 3 wt%, 5wt %) Ce-doped SnO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by the Co-precipitation method. X-ray diffraction investigations have been confirmed that the synthesized nanoparticles are polycrystalline in nature with tetragonal rutile phase. The particle size is determined using Scherrer’s formula and it is found to increase with the “Ce” dopant. High resolution scanning electron microscope (HRSEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed spherical morphology composed of fine crystallites with diameters around ∼200 nm. Optical band gap was decreased by the doping confirming the direct energy transfer between f-electrons of rare earth ion and the SnO2 conduction or valence band. This study demonstrates the Ce doped SnO2 nanoparticles for applications in optoelectronic devices.

Résumé :
Abstract Topological insulators (TI), as a kind of fantastic nanomaterial with excellent electrical and optical properties, have attracted particular attention due to the promising applications in optoelectronic devices. Herein, we experimentally demonstrated the interaction between light and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) monolayer with an antimony telluride (Sb2Te3) TI nanoparticle. It was found that photoluminescence (PL) emission and Raman scattering signal can be boosted by 5 and 8 folds in MoS2 monolayer integrated with the TI nanoparticle, respectively. The measured and simulated dark-field scattering spectra illustrated that the enhancement of light–matter interaction could be derived from the generation of localized surface plasmons on the TI nanoparticle with distinctly boosted electric field. We also found that there exists a redshift of 5 nm for the enhanced PL peak, which could be attributed to the formation of trions in MoS2 induced by plasmon doping. This work would provide a new pathway for the applications of TI nanoparticles in the optoelectronics, especially light–matter interaction enhancement.

Résumé :
Interest in layered two-dimensional (2D) materials has been escalating rapidly over the past few decades due to their promising optoelectronic and photonic properties emerging from their atomically thin 2D structural confinements. When these 2D materials are further confined in lateral dimensions toward zero-dimensional (0D) structures, 2D nanoparticles and quantum dots with new properties can be formed. Here, we report a nonequilibrium gas-phase synthesis method for the stoichiometric formation of gallium selenide (GaSe) nanoparticles ensembles that can potentially serve as quantum dots. We show that the laser ablation of a target in an argon background gas condenses the laser-generated plume, resulting in the formation of metastable nanoparticles in the gas phase. The deposition of these nanoparticles onto the substrate results in the formation of nanoparticle ensembles, which are then post-processed to crystallize or sinter the nanoparticles. The effects of background gas pressures, in addition to crystallization/sintering temperatures, are systematically studied. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) measurements are used to study the correlations between growth parameters, morphology, and optical properties of the fabricated 2D nanoparticle ensembles.

Résumé :
This research work focused on the preparation of Monazite nanoparticles using ball milling technique and the determination of its optical properties. High energy ball milling was used to prepare nanoparticles from the bulk materials using the top-down technique. Debye–Scherer formula was used to determine the crystalline size of the nanoparticle. Optical properties such as transmittance, refractive index, extinction coefficient, optical conductivity and band gap energy were determined. The result showed that the crystalline size was about 64.23nm on the average. The dislocation density calculated ranged from 0.149 x 10-3nm to 0.460 x 10-3nm. The absorbance decreased as the wavelength spectrum moved from the ultraviolet region to the visible region and the near-infrared region. The refractive index increased from 1.57 a.u to 2.65 a.u as the photon energy increased from about 1.38eV to 1.14eV. The transmittance at the near-infrared region was even up to 90.9% in some cases. The band energy gap was between 3.57eV and 4.11eV. The properties of the Monazite nanoparticles determined showed that it can have possible applications in optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices.

Résumé :
It is generally believed that metal nanoparticles strongly quench the singlet-excited states of chromophores when attached to nanoparticle surfaces, through an energy-transfer mechanism, which limits their application in optoelectronic devices and photonic materials. Recent studies of fluorophore-linked metal nanoparticles reveal that there is a dramatic suppression in the quenching of the singlet-excited state of these molecules and they possess unusual photophysical properties. A summary of our work on the photophysical and excited-state properties of chromophore-functionalized gold nanoparticles is presented in this article. Pyrene-capped gold nanoparticles showed normal fluorescence in nonpolar solvents and an intermolecular excimer formation at higher loadings. The quenching of the emission, observed in pyrene-labeled gold nanoparticles in polar solvents, is attributed to the formation of pyrene radical cation through a photoinduced electron-transfer process. We have also functionalized gold nanoparticles using a thiol derivative of fullerene. The quenching of fluorescence and decreased yields of triplet-excited state, observed in these systems, are attributed to an energy-transfer process.

Résumé :
Nonlinear optical phenomena enable novel photonic and optoelectronic applications. Especially, metallic nanoparticles and thin films with nonlinear optical properties offer the potential for micro-optical system integration. For this purpose, new nonlinear materials need to be continuously identified, investigated, and utilized for nonlinear optical applications. While noble-metal nanoparticles, nanostructures, and thin films of silver and gold have been widely studied, iridium (Ir) nanoparticles and ultrathin films have not been investigated for nonlinear optical applications yet. Here, we present a combined theoretical and experimental study on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of iridium nanoparticles deposited via atomic layer deposition (ALD). Linear optical constants, such as the effective refractive index and extinction coefficient, were evaluated at different growth stages of nanoparticle formation. Both linear and nonlinear optical properties of these Ir ALD coatings were calculated theoretically using the Maxwell Garnett theory. The third-order susceptibility of iridium nanoparticle samples was experimentally investigated using the z-scan technique. According to the experiment, for an Ir ALD coating with 45 cycles resulting in iridium nanoparticles, the experimentally determined nonlinear third-order susceptibility is about χIr(3) = (2.4 − i2.1) × 10−17 m2/V2 at the fundamental wavelength of 700 nm. The theory fitted to the experimental results predicts a 5 × 106-fold increase around 230 nm. This strong increase is due to the proximity to the Mie resonance of iridium nanoparticles.

In this study, cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized via chemical precipitation, a facile and cost effective method. The effects of various cadmium salt concentration on the characteristics of CdS NPs has been analyzed to understand the structure properties relationship for optoelectronics applications. XRD, FESEM, Raman Spectra, and UV–Vis has been used to characterize the prepared samples. The optical measurement indicates that there is a direct transition in accordance to energy band gap among 2.36 as well as 2.4 eV. The XRD diffract grams verify that all the films deposited have been polycrystalline of cubic as well as hexagonal structure with superior orientation (111). Analysis of EDX displayed that certain films have been stoichiometric with a small deficiency in sulphur. By optimizing the molar concentration of cadmium ions, the optoelectronic properties of the CdS NPs can be tuned accordingly.

Résumé :
Organic polymer nanoparticles have been gaining attention in photovoltaics as a means to control the morphology of polymer composite films for the purpose of studying bulk heterojunction, photoactive layers. This work investigates the preparation of nanostructured organic thin films from P3HT:PC61BM nanoparticles and their characterization as photoelectrodes for the photoelectrochemical reduction of hydrogen in acidic solutions. The morphology and optoelectronic properties of the nanostructured photocathodes are compared with conventional, solution-cast thin films of P3HT:PC61BM. The nanostructured photoelectrodes provide increased surface area compared with solution-cast films through control of the nanoscale morphology within each nanoparticle, leading to enhanced P3HT:PC61BM phase segregation. The photo-assisted deposition of platinum nanoparticles as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts onto the nanostructured P3HT:PC61BM photocathodes facilitates the photoreduction of protons to H2.

It is shown that with the addition of Ag NPs, the G band of graphene oxide shifts to low frequencies, which may be the result of the absence of separate double bonds, while the ID/IG ratio was not changed, as did the number of Gr layers. In the absorption spectrum of the films, along with the absorption band of graphene oxide, a shoulder was registered, which can be associated with the absorption of Ag NPs. The optical density of Gr films with plasmonic NPs is higher than without them. Measurements of the optoelectronic characteristics showed that, in the presence of Ag NPs, an increase in the values of the photocurrent of graphene oxide is observed. The sensitivity of graphene oxide films was increased by almost 20 times when plasmonic NPs were added to them, and the detection ability increased by 25 times. The results obtained can be used in the development of new photosensitive devices for optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications.

Résumé :
Semiconducting CdSe tetrapod nanoparticles were prepared, and their structural and optical properties were examined. The surface capping molecule, octylphosphonic acid, was replaced with butylamine after the particle synthesis. The exchange of surface ligands changed the physical properties of the nanocrystals, which resulted in a slight decrease in the nanoparticles size. The effects of changing surface ligands of CdSe tetrapod nanocrystals on the structural and optoelectronic properties were investigated, and it was found that the surfactant of nanoparticles could affect the device performance by enhancing the charge carrier separation at the active layer interfaces. Power conversion efficiency of the bulk heterojunction solar cells having the structure of glass/ITO/PEDOT:PSS/(CdSe + PCPDTBT)/Al was improved from 1.21% to 1.52% with the use of ligand-exchanged nanoparticles.

Résumé :
This study presents the preparation, characterization, and properties of a new composite containing cerium oxide nanoparticles and a conjugated polymer. CeO2 nanoparticles prepared using the co-precipitation method were dispersed into the conjugated polymer, prepared using the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. The interface interactions between the two components and the resultant optoelectronic properties of the composite are demonstrated. According to transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the dispersion of CeO2 nanoparticles in the polymer matrix strongly depends on the CeO2 nanoparticle concentration and results in different degrees of charge transfer. The photo-induced charge transfer and recombination processes were studied using steady-state optical spectroscopy, which shows a significant fluorescence quenching and red shifting in the composite. The higher photo-activity of the composite as compared to the single components was observed and explained. Unexpected room temperature ferromagnetism was observed in both components and all composites, of which the origin was attributed to the topology and defects.

Résumé :
Tailored sensoric, electronic, photoelectrochemical, and bioelectrocatalytic functions can be designed by organized molecular or biomolecular nanoparticle hybrid configurations on surfaces. Layered receptor-cross-linked Au nanoparticle assemblies on electrodes act as specific sensors of tunable sensitivities. Layered DNA-cross-linked CdS nanoparticles on electrode supports reveal organized assemblies of controlled electronic and photoelectrochemical properties. Au nanoparticle-FAD semisynthetic cofactor units are reconstituted into apo-glucose oxidase (GOx) and assembled onto electrodes. The resulting enzymes reveal effective electrical contacting with the electrodes, and exhibit bioelectrocatalytic functions toward the oxidation of glucose to gluconic acid. Magneto-switchable electrocatalysis and bioelectrocatalysis are accomplished by the surface modification of magnetic particles with redox-relay units. By the attraction of the modified magnetic particles to the electrode support, or their retraction from the electrode, by means of an external magnet, the electrochemical functions of the magnetic particle-tethered relays can be switched between "ON" and "OFF" states, respectively. The magneto-switchable redox functionalities of the modified particles activate electrocatalytic transformations, such as a biocatalytic chemoluminescence cascade that leads to magneto-switchable light emission or the activation of bioelectrocatalytic processes.

Résumé :
The newest achievement in the synthesis of cobalt oxide nanoparticles are considered. Cobalt oxide nanoparticles have attracted a great attention due to their uncommon properties and application in a supercapacitor, optoelectronic device, Li-ion battery gas sensor and electrochromic devices. Recently, nanostructured transition metal oxides with valuable properties have become a new class of materials for many technological fields. Cobalt oxide nanoparticles obtained from various precursors show different size distribution as well as different optical, electrical, magnetic, and electrochemical properties. A reduction in particle size to nanometer-scale leads to changes in properties compared to bulk ones due to quantum size effects. Depending on the application area, the choice of an appropriate synthesis method for nanoparticles with desirable properties is a crucial factor. Résumé :
Obtaining high-quality materials, based on nanocrystals, at low temperatures is one of the current challenges for opening new paths in improving and developing functional devices in nanoscale electronics and optoelectronics. Here we report a detailed investigation of the optimization of parameters for the in situ synthesis of thin films with high Ge content (50 %) into SiO2. Crystalline Ge nanoparticles were directly formed during co-deposition of SiO2 and Ge on substrates at 300, 400 and 500 °C. Using this approach, effects related to Ge–Ge spacing are emphasized through a significant improvement of the spatial distribution of the Ge nanoparticles and by avoiding multi-step fabrication processes or Ge loss. The influence of the preparation conditions on structural, electrical and optical properties of the fabricated nanostructures was studied by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, electrical measurements in dark or under illumination and response time investigations. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of the procedure by the means of an Al/n-Si/Ge:SiO2/ITO photodetector test structure. The structures, investigated at room temperature, show superior performance, high photoresponse gain, high responsivity (about 7 AW−1), fast response time (0.5 µs at 4 kHz) and great optoelectronic conversion efficiency of 900% in a wide operation bandwidth, from 450 to 1300 nm. The obtained photoresponse gain and the spectral width are attributed mainly to the high Ge content packed into a SiO2 matrix showing the direct connection between synthesis and optical properties of the tested nanostructures. Our deposition approach put in evidence the great potential of Ge nanoparticles embedded in a SiO2 matrix for hybrid integration, as they may be employed in structures and devices individually or with other materials, hence the possibility of fabricating various heterojunctions on Si, glass or flexible substrates for future development of Si-based integrated optoelectronics.

Résumé :
Carbon Dots (CDs) have gained the attention of many researchers since its discovery in 2004 due to their unique nanostructure and properties. These are very promising carbonaceous nanomaterials having wide range of applications in sensors, imaging, energy storage, nanomedicine, electrocatalysis and optoelectronics. CDs have shown excellent physical and chemical properties like, high crystallization, good dispersibility and photoluminescence. Besides, these are now known to have excellent biocompatibility, long-term chemical stability, cost-effectiveness and negligible toxicity. Due to favourable physical structure and chemical characteristics, these nanocarbon-based materials have drawn an interest as supercapacitor (SC) electrode materials, opening upnew opportunities to increase the energy density and lifespan of SCs. Thus, variety of quick and affordable methods i.e., the arc-discharge method, microwave pyrolysis, hydrothermal method, and electrochemical synthesis have been developed to synthesize this versatile nanomaterial. There are undoubtedly many methods for creating CDs that are effective and affordable, but due to the safety and simplicity of synthesis, CDs made from waste or using environmentally friendly methods have been innovated. In order to devise sustainable chemical strategies for CDs, green synthetic methodologies based on "top-down" and "bottom-up" strategies have been prioritised. This review summarizes numerous synthetic strategies and studies that are essential for the creation of environment friendly processes for CDs. The recent developments in the use of CDs for photoluminescence and supercapacitance have been highlighted providing a clear understanding of the new source of energy and optoelectronic materials with a futuristic perspective.

Résumé :
The performance of nanoelectronic and molecular electronic devices relies strongly on the employed functional units and their addressability, which is often a matter of appropriate interfaces and device design. Here, we compare two promising designs to build solid-state electronic devices utilizing the same functional unit. Optically addressable Ru-terpyridine complexes were incorporated in supramolecular wires or employed as ligands of gold nanoparticles and contacted by nanoelectrodes. The resulting small-area nanodevices were thoroughly electrically characterized as a function of temperature and light exposure. Differences in the resulting device conductance could be attributed to the device design and the respective transport mechanism, that is, thermally activated hopping conduction in the case of Ru-terpyridine wire devices or sequential tunneling in nanoparticle-based devices. Furthermore, the conductance switching of nanoparticle-based devices upon 530 nm irradiation was attributed to plasmon-induced metal-to-ligand charge transfer in the Ru-terpyridine complexes used as switching ligands. Finally, our results reveal a superior device performance of nanoparticle-based devices compared to molecular wire devices based on Ru-terpyridine complexes as functional units.

Résumé :
Graphitic-carbon nitride (g-C3N4) (GCN) has emerged as the most promising material for the fabrication of next generation cutting–edge electronic and optoelectronic devices, due to its excellent and promising electrical and physicochemical properties. In this work we report on strategies to enhance the electrical conductivity of GCN thin films through the formation of heterostructures using silver nanoparticles (Ag). The synergistic effect of silver nanoparticles doping on structural and transport properties of GCN thin films was studied in detail. The structural and morphological changes in GCN polymer owing to the inclusion of silver nanoparticles were examined through Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometer techniques. The conformational modifications in GCN polymer chains due to silver nanoparticles doping greatly enhanced the electrical conductivity of GCN thin films. The inclusion of silver nanoparticles in GCN polymer matrix decreases the barrier energy and enables the charge carrier hopping easily leading to improved electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity of GCN-Ag composite thin film was enhanced by two folds due to the silver nanoparticles inclusion in comparison to conductivity of the pristine GCN thin film. The presence of Ag nanoparticles in the composite film plays a substantial role in improving the dielectric attributes of the pure GCN. Therefore, the doping by using silver nanoparticles might be a suitable strategy for effectively tailoring the electrical conductivity and dielectric properties of GCN thin films and can be used as flexible conducting electrode material towards fabrication of electronic and optoelectronic devices

The present work reports on the synthesis and characterization of iridium (Ir)-based nanohybrids with variable chemical compositions. More specifically, highly stable polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanohybrids of the PVP-IrO2 and PVP-Ir/IrO2 types, as well as non-coated Ir/IrO2 nanoparticles, are synthesized using different synthetic protocols and characterized in terms of their chemical composition and morphology via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), respectively. Furthermore, their nonlinear optical (NLO) response and optical limiting (OL) efficiency are studied by means of the Z-scan technique, employing 4 ns laser pulses at 532 and 1064 nm. The results demonstrate that the PVP-Ir/IrO2 and Ir/IrO2 systems exhibit exceptional OL performance, while PVP-IrO2 presents very strong saturable absorption (SA) behavior, indicating that the present Ir-based nanohybrids could be strong competitors to other nanostructured materials for photonic and optoelectronic applications. In addition, the findings denote that the variation in the content of IrO2 nanoparticles by using different synthetic pathways significantly affects the NLO response of the studied Ir-based nanohybrids, suggesting that the choice of the appropriate synthetic method could lead to tailor-made NLO properties for specific applications in photonics and optoelectronics.

Abstract This study investigates the structural, morphological, and optical properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films incorporated with magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles. The PMMA-MgO polymer nanocomposite (PNC) films were fabricated via solution casting method using varying weight percentages (1-4 wt%) of MgO nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the integration of MgO nanofillers in the PMMA matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed interactions between PMMA and MgO nanoparticles. Atomic force microscopy demonstrated increased surface roughness in PNC films with higher MgO loading. Optical characterization using UV-visible spectroscopy showed enhanced absorption in the UV region and a noticeable peak at 280 nm due to MgO nanoparticles. The refractive index of PMMA-MgO PNCs increased with rising MgO content while the optical bandgap marginally decreased. The study highlights the potential of PMMA-MgO PNC films for advanced optoelectronic applications requiring high optical transparency and tuneable refractive index.
