Résumé :
The monograph includes studies of the last decades by a group of scientists engaged in solving problems of theoretical and methodological study of the problem of psychological manifestations of modern generations. The authors reflected the versatility of definitions of the concept of "generation" and revealed the multidimensional phenomenon of generations. The author's approach to the succession of generations deserves attention, which opens up prospects in the study of intergenerational relations. A level model of value-semantic mediation of intergenerational relations is presented, which allows a comprehensive look at the manifestations of generations. Reviews of generational studies are presented and empirical cross-sections are presented in the value-semantic perspective of the formation of generations. The problem of perception of generations by each other in age and gender aspects is considered in a special way. Attention is paid to the problems of spreading the belief in conspiracies in the modern youth environment and the harmful consequences of this. The empirical model of the conspirativist mentality is the beginning of research in this regard. It is addressed to philosophers, cultural scientists, sociologists, psychologists of various schools and anyone interested in new and recurring trends in human development in the world.

Varlamov, Oleg. Mivar databases and rules. ru : INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/1508665.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The multidimensional open epistemological active network MOGAN is the basis for the transition to a qualitatively new level of creating logical artificial intelligence. Mivar databases and rules became the foundation for the creation of MOGAN. The results of the analysis and generalization of data representation structures of various data models are presented: from relational to "Entity — Relationship" (ER-model). On the basis of this generalization, a new model of data and rules is created: the mivar information space "Thing-Property-Relation". The logic-computational processing of data in this new model of data and rules is shown, which has linear computational complexity relative to the number of rules. MOGAN is a development of Rule - Based Systems and allows you to quickly and easily design algorithms and work with logical reasoning in the "If..., Then..." format. An example of creating a mivar expert system for solving problems in the model area "Geometry"is given. Mivar databases and rules can be used to model cause-and-effect relationships in different subject areas and to create knowledge bases of new-generation applied artificial intelligence systems and real-time mivar expert systems with the transition to"Big Knowledge". The textbook in the field of training "Computer Science and Computer Engineering" is intended for students, bachelors, undergraduates, postgraduates studying artificial intelligence methods used in information processing and management systems, as well as for users and specialists who create mivar knowledge models, expert systems, automated control systems and decision support systems. Keywords: cybernetics, artificial intelligence, mivar, mivar networks, databases, data models, expert system, intelligent systems, multidimensional open epistemological active network, MOGAN, MIPRA, KESMI, Wi!Mi, Razumator, knowledge bases, knowledge graphs, knowledge networks, Big knowledge, products, logical inference, decision support systems, decision-making systems, autonomous robots, recommendation systems, universal knowledge tools, expert system designers, logical artificial intelligence.

Résumé :
When artists, scientists, and designers unite they create new ways of thinking and alternative paths to problem solving. The first book to trace the story of British "organic modernism", this ground-breaking open access study tells the story of a collective culture of artists, scientists, and designers in 20th century united by a holistic understanding of the organic world and devoted to collaboration, cooperation, and cross-pollination of the arts and biological sciences. Tracing how artists, scientists, and designers cooperated in various capacities from the Great Depression to postwar cybernetics, this book follows the evolution of philosophical organicism from the British Bauhaus, modern architecture, and surrealism; through to post-war socialism, the welfare state, epigenetics, biology-based art exhibitions; robotic art and design, cybernetics and ecology in art. Reacting against blunt reductionism, organic modernists implemented organicist and emergentist philosophies in scientific labs, design studios, and art ateliers, embracing complexity to solve problems in various scales and arenas, from cells to socialism. Their actions offer a template for finding meaningful agency and problem solving in today's world fraught by global climate disaster, ever-expanding economic inequalities, and backsliding democracy A sequel to Terranova'sArt as Organism: Biology and the Evolution of the Digital Image(2016),Organic Modernismreveals the biological roots of cybernetics in the British context. Résumé :
Probability theory forms a natural framework for explaining the impressive success of people at solving many difficult inductive problems, such as learning words and categories, inferring the relevant features of objects, and identifying functional relationships. Probabilistic models of cognition use Bayes’s rule to identify probable structures or representations that could have generated a set of observations, whether the observations are sensory input or the output of other psychological processes. In this chapter we address an important question that arises within this framework: How do people infer representations that are complex enough to faithfully encode the world but not so complex that they “overfit” noise in the data? We discuss nonparametric Bayesian models as a potential answer to this question. To do so, first we present the mathematical background necessary to understand nonparametric Bayesian models. We then delve into nonparametric Bayesian models for three types of hidden structure: clusters, features, and functions. Finally, we conclude with a summary and discussion of open questions for future research.

Résumé :
Central to this paper is the analysis of a video sequence in which car mechanics try to solve a technical problem. The sequence is analyzed by means of Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus and practical sense understood as a sociological reformulation of the phenomenological concept of intercorporeality. It is demonstrated that this sense implies two interrelated dimensions: It functions both as an embodied background foundation for functional problem-solving as well as a sense for social hierarchies. The cooperative solution of a technical problem opens up the stage for power games. In conclusion, the different ways are discussed in which the “twofold” interpretation of the video sequence allows for a specification of “intercorporeality”.

Résumé :
Sight-reading is defined as the execution – vocal or instrumental – of longer stretches of non- or under-rehearsed music at an acceptable pace and with adequate expression. Some people also label this ‘playing by sight’ or ‘prima vista’. Similar to improvisation, sight-reading requires the instant adaptation to new constraints, which places it among those that motor scientists refer to as open skills. This article briefly looks at how music notation is perceived and then moves on to the structure of sight-reading, taking into account the real-time conditions under which it takes place. This includes a discussion of perceptual and problem-solving issues. Finally, the article outlines the course of skill acquisition with its characteristic differences between novices and experts, and presents a model of sight-reading performance.

Résumé :
Art can be understood as a form of political discourse; as a descriptive, an interpretive, or an explicitly critical approximation; or as a vehicle with which to transcend the political. Art complicates our understandings and perceptions of the world, altering the discursive frames within which the political is negotiated. Research on politics and art explores art’s engagement with politics and its vision of the world; it analyzes art’s contribution to both our understanding of politics and problem solving. Current research also explores art’s critical and emancipatory potentialities, as well as participatory art and social activism in light of new forms of political communication. Such research is interdisciplinary and open to methodological pluralism and innovation. This article discusses artistic and performative imaginations of the political; knowledge production through art; art’s engagement with violence and peace; the art-audience interface; ethics and aesthetics of political art; and art’s function as a political witness.

On-Line Monitoring of Cooling Waters. AMPP, 2002. https://doi.org/10.5006/nace_rp0189-2002.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Scope This NACE standard describes a variety of devices used for on-line monitoring of fouling, corrosion, and other parameters in recirculating cooling tower water systems. Methods are presented for collecting test data to determine fouling and corrosion rates that can be used for, but are not limited to, (1) predicting the expected service life of heat-exchange equipment, (2) optimizing the cooling system operation, (3) detecting operating problems and upset conditions, (4) monitoring corrective actions taken when such conditions occur, (5) assisting in problem solving, and (6) evaluating alternate chemical treatment programs. This standard is intended for the use of operators of open recirculating cooling water systems and those organizations that supply treatment materials and consulting services to them. This standard was originally prepared in 1989 by NACE Task Group T-3T-1, a component of Unit Committee T-3T on On-Line Monitoring Technology, and revised in 1995 by T-3T-4. It was revised in 2002 by NACE Task Group (TG) 241 on On-Line Monitoring of Cooling Waters and Cooling Water Test Units. TG 241 is administered by Specific Technology Group (STG) 11 on Water Treatment. This standard was issued by NACE International under the auspices of STG 11. The purpose of this standard is to describe technologies applicable to the on-line monitoring of cooling water systems. The standard focuses on those technologies that provide data on a short-term basis (minutes to hours) and provide output in a form that may be used by the operator to deal with changing conditions in real time. For the purpose of this standard, an on-line monitor for a cooling water system is defined as a device, or combination of devices, that measures corrosion rates and determines changes in heat transfer coefficients (fouling factors) by measuring pertinent parameters under steady-state conditions that simulate critical conditions in an operating heat exchanger in a reliable and objective manner and with acceptable precision and accuracy. (Nomenclature and abbreviations used in this standard are defined in Appendix A.).

Résumé :
Today's managers and leaders are faced with paralyzing challenges. There is never enough time or resources to get everything accomplished, and every organization is constantly being pulled in multiple directions. Every decision has consequences—some immediate, some longer-term. Add to these challenges the politics of corporate culture, where issues of power, influence, and authority are constantly in play. Whether you are a CEO, business owner, department head, team leader, or in any other managerial position, you need to learn how to navigate these treacherous shoals—to be flexible and decisive, supportive and commanding, tactical and strategic. In this fascinating analysis of business life, James Lucas identifies over a dozen fundamental paradoxes of leadership and demonstrates how the greatest leaders embrace, rather than avoid, them. From exercise authority and share power to encourage cooperation and encourage conflict, Lucas shows readers how to pursue seemingly incompatible goals simultaneously and thrive in a world of ambiguity. Whether you are formally in charge or find yourself in a position of de facto influence, this book will open your mind to new ways of solving problems, overcoming inertia, and turning uncertainty into opportunity. For more information and resources, please visit www.paradoxbasedleadership.com. Today's leaders are faced with paralyzing challenges. There is never enough of anything to get everything accomplished. Every decision has consequences—some immediate, some longer-term, all serious. Every organization is constantly being pulled in multiple directions, and our frustration can swell as we see value in all of them. One authority instructs us to take charge, while another tells us to empower our employees. We're instructed to challenge our people with high expectations, and to allow for human error; to tightly align our organizations, and to open them organizations up to all possibilities. We face one crippling dilemma after another. Are we going to do A or B? The answer is yes, we're going to do it all. We're going to have high expectations and high tolerance; strong leadership that takes a back seat; crisp alignment with anarchic creativity. Whether you are a CEO, division or department head, team leader, or entrepreneur, you're going to learn how to navigate these treacherous shoals—to be flexible and decisive, supportive and commanding, tactical and strategic. For more information and resources, please visit www.paradoxbasedleadership.com. Great leaders understand that leadership is a both/and, not an either/or game. In this groundbreaking book, James Lucas demonstrates how to pursue seemingly incompatible goals and thrive in a world of ambiguity. You'll see that, while a paradox seems to require irreconcilable actions, it is only an apparent contradiction. The value comes from seeing through the illusion. You will explore twenty fundamental paradoxes of leadership, culture, talent management, and strategy. You'll learn how to embrace, rather than avoid, these unavoidable paradoxes, examine both sides find practical techniques for avoiding common pitfalls, and ultimately discover creative solutions that reconcile apparently conflicting priorities. Whether you are formally in charge or find yourself in a position of de facto influence anywhere in your organization, this book will open your mind to new ways of thinking and allow you to turn uncertainty into opportunity. You've always sensed that these paradoxes were there. With this book, you'll be able to bring them into the light and make them work for you.

Kaplan, Gisela. Bird Minds. CSIRO Publishing, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486300198.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In her comprehensive and carefully crafted book, Gisela Kaplan demonstrates how intelligent and emotional Australian birds can be. She describes complex behaviours such as grieving, deception, problem solving and the use of tools. Many Australian birds cooperate and defend each other, and exceptional ones go fishing by throwing breadcrumbs in the water, extract poisonous parts from prey and use tools to crack open eggshells and mussels. The author brings together evidence of many such cognitive abilities, suggesting plausible reasons for their appearance in Australian birds. Bird Minds is the first attempt to shine a critical and scientific light on the cognitive behaviour of Australian land birds. In this fascinating volume, the author also presents recent changes in our understanding of the avian brain and links these to life histories and longevity. Following on from Gisela’s well-received books, Australian Magpie and Tawny Frogmouth, as well as two earlier titles on birds, Bird Minds contends that the unique and often difficult conditions of Australia's environment have been crucial for the evolution of unusual complexities in avian cognition and behaviour. This book is written for a general audience, especially amateur ornithologists and naturalists but it will equally appeal to specialists in bird behaviour and students working in biology, comparative psychology, cognitive ecology, field ornithology, zoology, aviculture and animal welfare. It will also be of interests to veterinarians, zoo personnel, bird lovers and members of other groups concerned with birds. Recipient of a 2016 Whitley Award commendation for Behavioural Zoology

Ross, Janice. The Choreography of Environments. Oxford University PressNew York, NY, 2024. https://doi.org/10.1093/9780197775660.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Abstract The Choreography of Environments: How the Home of Anna and Lawrence Halprin Transformed Contemporary Dance and Urban Design opens with an odd premise: objects and the domestic spaces dancers occupy seep into their aesthetic consciousness, shaping their approach to movement invention and choreography. If these objects and spaces happen to have been designed by a leading modernist architect and landscape designer working with the dancer, then the aesthetic imprint is amplified. Dance innovation becomes pressed into dialogue with spatial, environmental, and urban agendas. The Choreography of Environments is the first monograph to use ordinary objects from a private residence as lenses into viewing innovations in dance and urban design. This book posits the Halprins’ 1950s iconic mid-century modern home and expansive outdoor dance deck in Northern California as a hidden archive. It explores four objects from their house and gardens (a staircase, a deck, a chair, and a window) to trace how, despite the conservative postwar climate, this intimate domestic space became a template reshaping postmodern dance invention and civic, social, and environmental engagement. Through environmental workshops, improvisatory explorations, and collective problem-solving on her outdoor studio designed by Lawrence Halprin, Anna collapsed boundaries between work and home, parenting and performing, and retreating into nature and advancing toward civic participation. The Halprin home became a force for politicizing the daily performances of urban spaces for both Halprins, linking idealism and activism in the public body.
