Résumé :
This chapter examines how creationists harnessed websites, magazines, museums, and institutes to rewrite history as well as the rules of science. By the end of the twentieth century, the Scopes trial was no longer a humiliation for creationists but an indignation. Realizing that the problem had been to make any compromise with literalism's naysayers, creationists recast and remythologized Scopes as a lesson, their defining moment in the fight against evolution. This chapter begins with an overview of the Creation Museum, located in Petersburg, Kentucky, and the ministry behind it, Answers in Genesis (AiG), along with AiG's proposed Ark Encounter museum. It then considers AiG's web sites as well as the Discovery Institute's creation of an online guide called Getting the Facts Straight: A Viewer's Guide to PBS's Evolution in response to the PBS seven-part series Evolution. It also discusses the movie Alleged, which addressed the conflict between science and creationism, and concludes with an assessment of the Creation Museum's depiction of Darwinism and interpretation of the Scopes trial.

Résumé :
The article explores how American Muslim activists increasingly use the power of social media to change the discourse about American Muslims. First, it provides a sketch of the American Muslim web presence, followed by an exploration of the American Muslim webscape’s topography. Second, it investigates how American Muslim religious leaders operate online. While some posit that the Internet can erode their authority, American Muslim religious leaders and institutions have leveraged new media to expand their following online. Third, it examines how the Internet not only fosters linkages between American Muslims and their coreligionists abroad but also, more importantly, how American Muslims use the Internet to emphasize their identity as diverse, law-abiding citizens. Finally, it shows how American Muslims use the Internet—not simply to propagate their faith but to deflect anti-Muslim sentiment and make claims for equal citizenship.

Résumé :
This book explores the diverse ways digital technology is shaping how Muslims across vast territories relate to religious authorities in fulfilling spiritual, mystical, and legalistic agendas. From social networks to websites, essential elements of religious practices and authority now have representation online. Muslims, embracing the immediacy and general accessibility of the internet, are increasingly turning to cyberspace for advice and answers to important religious questions. Online environments often challenge traditional models of authority, however. One result is the rise of digitally literate religious scholars and authorities whose influence and impact go beyond traditional boundaries of imams, mullahs, and shaikhs. The book shows how online rhetoric and social media are being used to articulate religious faith by many different kinds of Muslim organizations and individuals, from Muslim comedians and women’s rights advocates to jihad-oriented groups, such as the “Islamic State” and al-Qaeda, which relied on strategic digital media policies to augment and justify their authority and draw recruits. Hashtag Islam makes clear that understanding CIEs is crucial for the holistic interpretation of authority in contemporary Islam.

Résumé :
This epilogue discusses Richard Durham's legacy. Throughout his life Durham fought for freedom, justice, and equality for African Americans and other oppressed people, whether through poetry or print reporting, broadcast drama or political speechmaking. In the years following her husband's death, Clarice Durham mounted a campaign to keep his legacy alive. Today, via online archives, Internet users may listen to forty-two original broadcasts of Durham's Destination Freedom episodes. Web users may also hear his CBS Radio Workshop dramas and view the only two programs known to have survived from Bird of the Iron Feather. In addition, Destination Freedom episodes are available for on-site listening in the Chicago Public Library's Vivian G. Harsh Research Collection. On November 3, 2007, Durham was inducted into the Museum of Broadcast Communications' National Radio Hall of Fame.

Résumé :
This essay is about how the academic field of North American Islam has turned to questions of gender and sexuality and how American Muslim women have dealt with the reality of gender constructions and localized dynamics in the American context. Widespread perceptions that Muslim women are oppressed by their religion make it difficult for them to tackle gender disparities in their own communities. If, for instance, a woman pushes to end practices in mosques that require her to pray separately from the men, as some women do, then anti-Muslim activists latch onto their complaints to discredit the Muslim community as a whole. At the same time, these women may be criticized by some within the Muslim community for imposing “western values” on Muslims or undermining the community with their feminist ideas. The influences of anti-Islam populism and intra-Muslim community pressures have shaped contemporary debates about women’s status in Islam and American women’s rights. Contested post-9/11 discourses, women’s leadership in public organizations, mosque participation, online activism, and law are examined.

Résumé :
Graeme Gibson is a man of many talents. He curates an online museum of more than four hundred world music instruments, plays many of those instruments himself, designs and builds others, and conducts copious research on music traditions worldwide. Because “world music involves numerous traditions [up] to contemporary musics,” Graeme says, “I prefer to think of it as a spectrum that includes numerous genres.” He sees parallels between the spectrum of world music and the autism spectrum, where he states that he “also found that everyone is different from their case, to my case and so on. I do agree with the term ‘spectrum,’ ” he adds, “but we still have lots to learn.” Living with “classic autism” all his life, Graeme has faced formidable challenges. Yet he would not rid himself of his condition even given the chance: “Some symptoms I would like to have gone, like stress triggers and so on, but I fear in the end my music may be lost too.”
