Résumé :
Background: Central line–associated bloodstream infections are serious life-threatening infections in the intensive care unit setting. Methods: To analyze the impact of the International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC) Multidimensional Approach (IMA) and INICC Surveillance Online System (ISOS) on central line–associated bloodstream infection rates in Bahrain from January 2013 to December 2016, we conducted a prospective, before-after surveillance, cohort, observational study in one intensive care unit in Bahrain. During baseline, we performed outcome and process surveillance of central line–associated bloodstream infection on 2320 intensive care unit patients, applying Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Healthcare Safety Network definitions. During intervention, we implemented IMA through ISOS, including (1) a bundle of infection prevention interventions, (2) education, (3) outcome surveillance, (4) process surveillance, (5) feedback on central line–associated bloodstream infection rates and consequences, and (6) performance feedback of process surveillance. Bivariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed using a logistic regression model to estimate the effect of the intervention on the central line–associated bloodstream infection rate. Results: During baseline, 672 central line days and 7 central line–associated bloodstream infections were recorded, accounting for 10.4 central line–associated bloodstream infections per 1000 central line days. During intervention, 13,020 central line days and 48 central line–associated bloodstream infections were recorded. After the second year, there was a sustained 89% cumulative central line–associated bloodstream infection rate reduction to 1.2 central line–associated bloodstream infections per 1000 central line days (incidence density rate, 0.11; 95% confidence interval 0.1–0.3; p, 0.001). The average extra length of stay of patients with central line–associated bloodstream infection was 23.3 days, and due to the reduction of central line–associated bloodstream infections, 367 days of hospitalization were saved, amounting to a reduction in hospitalization costs of US$1,100,553. Conclusion: Implementing IMA was associated with a significant reduction in the central line–associated bloodstream infection rate in Bahrain.

Résumé :
This paper introduces a new methodological approach to the study of surveillance that I call digital sousveillance— the co-optation of digital data and the use of computational methods and techniques to resituate technologies of control and surveillance of individuals to instead observe the organizational observer. To illustrate the potential of this method, I employ quantitative network analytic methods to trace the changes in and development of the vast network of public and private organizations involved in surveillance operations in the United States—what I term the “US surveillant assemblage”—from the 1970s to the 2000s. The results of the network analyses suggest that the US surveillant assemblage is becoming increasingly privatized and that the line between “public” and “private” is becoming blurred as private organizations are, at an increasing rate, partnering with the US government to engage in mass surveillance.

Résumé :
In the lines of Albrechtlund and Dubbled (2005) and their call for a new direction in Surveillance Studies, this paper discusses the overlapping of surveillance, art and entertainment. Indeed surveillance ought to be considered not only regarding its negative implications (e.g. the infringement of privacy or social sorting) but also regarding ‘the fun features and entertainment value of surveillance’ (Albrechtlund and Dubbled 2005: 216). Drawing on this new direction in the recent years in Surveillance Studies, this paper focuses on the interplay between watcher and watched and the possibility of challenging surveillance through artistic, entertaining or/and playful motives. Play and games within this framework participate both to the active appropriation of the surveillant hegemonic values (and therefore their acceptance) and to the creation of a space of negotiations (and therefore the possibility of resistance). Thus this paper discusses, using several examples, the line between art, entertainment and resistance that has become blurry and has left a wider margin to respond to surveillance processes.

Résumé :
Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PMC) is defined as papillary thyroid carcinoma ≤10 mm. Active surveillance of PMC without high-risk features, such as clinical node metastasis, distant metastasis, and clinical evidence of significant extrathyroid extension, was initiated in two Japanese hospitals in the mid-1990s. This strategy was incorporated into guidelines in Japan in 2010 and in the United States in 2015. In studies conducted by the two hospitals, most PMCs grew very slowly or did not grow, and none of the patients during active surveillance showed distant metastasis or died of thyroid carcinoma. Furthermore, none of the patients who underwent surgery after progression signs were detected showed significant recurrence. Therefore, we conclude that active surveillance should be the first line in management of low-risk PMC, because it is safer and less costly than immediate surgery. Active surveillance helps in avoiding adverse events of surgery and is an economical strategy.

Résumé :
Abstract INTRODUCTION Allogeneic stem cell transplant (allo-SCT) patients are at high risk for severe life threatening bacterial infections. Although the prevalence and pattern of resistance varies among centres and countries, there is a growing global problem of resistance to antibiotics. The consequent increased use of broad spectrum antibiotics and injudicious antibiotic policies have contributed to the selection of multidrug resistant (MDR) pathogens. Translocation of organisms which normally colonize the gut into the bloodstream during the febrile neutropenia (FN) has long been postulated as a pathogenic factor for life threatening gram negative infections. This hypothesis had led to utilization of various methods of peritransplant gut decontamination. Our centre has a policy of performing surveillance stool cultures for all patients prior to transplant. While initially our antibiotic policy was independent of any surveillance culture, over recent years stool surveillance culture sensitivity has guided our choice of first line antibiotics in the post transplant FN. This retrospective analysis is aimed at comparing the outcomes of empirical versus surveillance stool culture guided selection of antibiotics in the immediate post allo-SCT FN. METHODOLOGY This was a retrospective analysis of 190 allo SCT patients from January 2008 to December 2014 at our centre. During the post transplant FN, patients were categorized into two groups. Group-1 (Empirical: n=48) received first line broad spectrum antibiotics as per our hospital policy i.e. cefoperazone + sulbactum combination with amikacin. Group-2 (Surveillance based: n=119) received first line antibiotics based on sensitivity pattern of stool surveillance culture. In both groups, escalation to second line antibiotics (carbapenems with or without colistin or tigecycline) was done if defervescence did not occur in 24-48 hours or blood cultures grew a resistant organism or if there was any clinical deterioration. The primary endpoint was defervescence rate after first line antibiotics in both groups. Secondary endpoints were need for second line antibiotics, duration of total antibiotic use, concordance between blood and surveillance stool culture, incidence and causes of mortality, prevalence of MDR organisms in stool surveillance culture and change in trend of resistant organisms in stool surveillance cultures over last 7 years. RESULTS One ninety patients underwent allo-SCT from January 2008 to December 2014.The median age of the cohort was 26 years (range 3-57 years) with 136 males and 54 females. The diagnoses were AML-75, ALL-46, CML-19, aplastic anemia-18, MDS-12 and others-20. Group 1 (Empirical) had 48 patients, while 119 were in Group 2 (Surveillance based). Twenty three patients did not have any growth in stool surveillance. In group 1, defervescence to first line antibiotics occurred in 23 (48 %) patients, whereas in group 2, it occurred in 78 (66 %) patients (P= 0.05). Defervescence within 24 hours was seen in 18 (37.5 %) patients in group 1 and 67 (56.3 %) patients in group 2 (P= 0.0425). In group 2, 34.5 % patients required escalation to second line antibiotics, compared to 54 % patients in group 1 (P = 0.0294). The median duration of total antibiotic use was 17.5 days in group 1 and 18 days in group 2 (P= NS). The concordance between blood culture and surveillance stool culture was seen in 3 (1.76 %) patients. There was no significant difference in infection related mortality between the two groups as shown in the figure 1. The prevalence of resistant organisms in the baseline surveillance stool culture changed between the periods 2008-2011 and 2012-2014. The incidence of extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) organisms decreased from 79.66 % in 2008-2011 to 62.1 % in 2012-2014 (P = 0.0351). The incidence of carbapenem resistant (15.25 % vs. 25.26 %), colistin resistant (1.69 % vs. 2.1 %) and vancomycin resistant enterococcus (VRE: 3.38 % vs. 10.52 %) increased from 2008-2011 to 2012-2014 period. The increase in the combined incidence of carbapenem resistant, colistin resistant and VRE was from 20.32 % to 37.86 % (P = 0.0351). CONCLUSION Stool surveillance guided antibiotic usage leads to earlier defervescence in higher number of patients, while also reducing the need for second line antibiotics in patients undergoing allo-SCT. A randomized study is required to prove the importance of stool surveillance in this setting. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Résumé :
Objective.Central line–associated bloodstream infection (BSI) rates are a key quality metric for comparing hospital quality and safety. Traditional BSI surveillance may be limited by interrater variability. We assessed whether a computer-automated method of central line–associated BSI detection can improve the validity of surveillance.Design.Retrospective cohort study.Setting.Eight medical and surgical intensive care units (ICUs) in 4 academic medical centers.Methods.Traditional surveillance (by hospital staff) and computer algorithm surveillance were each compared against a retrospective audit review using a random sample of blood culture episodes during the period 2004–2007 from which an organism was recovered. Episode-level agreement with audit review was measured with κ statistics, and differences were assessed using the test of equal κ coefficients. Linear regression was used to assess the relationship between surveillance performance (κ) and surveillance-reported BSI rates (BSIs per 1,000 central line–days).Results.We evaluated 664 blood culture episodes. Agreement with audit review was significantly lower for traditional surveillance (κ [95% confidence interval (CI)] = 0.44 [0.37–0.51]) than computer algorithm surveillance (κ [95% CI] [0.52–0.64]; P = .001). Agreement between traditional surveillance and audit review was heterogeneous across ICUs (P = .001); furthermore, traditional surveillance performed worse among ICUs reporting lower (better) BSI rates (P = .001). In contrast, computer algorithm performance was consistent across ICUs and across the range of computer-reported central line–associated BSI rates.Conclusions.Compared with traditional surveillance of bloodstream infections, computer automated surveillance improves accuracy and reliability, making interfacility performance comparisons more valid.Infect Control Hosp Epidemiol 2014;35(12):1483–1490

Résumé :
While a considerable amount of work has centered on the doping problem within sport scholarship, little extended attention has been given to drug testing as a surveillance system in itself. The paper draws from Haggerty and Ericson’s (2000) surveillant assemblage model to highlight the increasing convergence of once discrete surveillance systems now evident in the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) recent policy changes. It outlines the unique contribution that Deleuzian assemblage theory offers doping and sport scholarship. Assemblage theory opens up a line of research to study how surveillance is produced through the continuous monitoring of information across multiple interacting control systems. The article draws from WADA policy documents to suggest that the changing dynamics of transparency within sport increasingly place all athletes under more intense and nuanced scrutiny for any signs of suspicious activity.

Résumé :
Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) figure as one of the most important healthcare-associated infections (HAI), particularly in intensive care units (ICU). Despite their clinical and public health importance, little is known about CLABSI in Canadian ICUs. Thus, the first objective of this thesis was to describe the epidemiology of CLABSI in Quebec ICUs, using data from the Surveillance Provinciale des Infections Nosocomiales – Bactériémies Associées aux Cathéters Centraux (SPIN-BACC) program. We showed that CLABSIs are an important problem in Quebec ICUs, but CLABSI incidence rates have decreased since 2007. Moreover, the proportion of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has declined to <40% since 2006 (chapter 6). Surveillance programs are essential to establish benchmarks. In the last years, several regional and national CLABSI surveillance programs have decided to eliminate continuous participation requirements from hospitals. This might have jeopardized the validity of these programs' results because the minimal number of months hospitals should participate in such programs to generate valid annual benchmarks for CLABSI incidence rates have yet to be determined. Our second objective was to determine, through simulation, the impact of different participation requirements on the ability of national and provincial/regional surveillance programs to yield valid estimates of the true annual ICU CLABSI pooled incidence rates. We demonstrated that shortening participation requirements might be suitable for national ICU CLABSI surveillance programs if data are randomly collected. Nevertheless, regional/provincial programs should opt for continuous participation to avoid biased benchmarks (chapter 7). Furthermore, surveillance programs can also be used as a tool to reduce CLABSI incidence rates in ICUs. However, the magnitude of this effect has not been definitely determined as earlier studies presented a wide range of effect estimates. We hypothesized that the effect of surveillance on CLABSI rates differs depending on the characteristics of participating ICUs. Our third objective was to determine the effect of SPIN-BACC on the CLABSI incidence rates in Quebec ICUs, and identify ICU-level variables associated with higher CLABSI incidence rates. There were important reductions in the CLABSI incidence rates of "surveillance-naïve" (31%) and of non-university affiliated ICUs (27%) that participated in SPIN-BACC for 3 years. However, due to our small sample size, these results were not statistically significant. Neonatal and "surveillance-naïve" units were associated with higher CLABSI incidence rates (chapter 8). In conclusion, our first study described the CLABSI burden on ICU patients in Quebec. Our simulation study suggested that small and medium sizes surveillance programs should perform continuous surveillance to avoid biased benchmarks. Finally, we suggested that reductions in ICU CLABSI incidence rates associated with targeted surveillance may be more pronounced among "surveillance-naïve" and non-university affiliated ICUs. All the different applications of CLABSI surveillance data demonstrated in this thesis have the ultimate goal of improving patient care and safety.

Ghosh, Saurav. « News Analytics for Global Infectious Disease Surveillance ». Diss., Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/80574.

Résumé :
Traditional disease surveillance can be augmented with a wide variety of open sources, such as online news media, twitter, blogs, and web search records. Rapidly increasing volumes of these open sources are proving to be extremely valuable resources in helping analyze, detect, and forecast outbreaks of infectious diseases, especially new diseases or diseases spreading to new regions. However, these sources are in general unstructured (noisy) and construction of surveillance tools ranging from real-time disease outbreak monitoring to construction of epidemiological line lists involves considerable human supervision. Intelligent modeling of such sources using text mining methods such as, topic models, deep learning and dependency parsing can lead to automated generation of the mentioned surveillance tools. Moreover, realtime global availability of these open sources from web-based bio-surveillance systems, such as HealthMap and WHO Disease Outbreak News (DONs) can aid in development of generic tools which will be applicable to a wide range of diseases (rare, endemic and emerging) across different regions of the world. In this dissertation, we explore various methods of using internet news reports to develop generic surveillance tools which can supplement traditional surveillance systems and aid in early detection of outbreaks. We primarily investigate three major problems related to infectious disease surveillance as follows. (i) Can trends in online news reporting monitor and possibly estimate infectious disease outbreaks? We introduce approaches that use temporal topic models over HealthMap corpus for detecting rare and endemic disease topics as well as capturing temporal trends (seasonality, abrupt peaks) for each disease topic. The discovery of temporal topic trends is followed by time-series regression techniques to estimate future disease incidence. (ii) In the second problem, we seek to automate the creation of epidemiological line lists for emerging diseases from WHO DONs in a near real-time setting. For this purpose, we formulate Guided Epidemiological Line List (GELL), an approach that combines neural word embeddings with information extracted from dependency parse-trees at the sentence level to extract line list features. (iii) Finally, for the third problem, we aim to characterize diseases automatically from HealthMap corpus using a disease-specific word embedding model which were subsequently evaluated against human curated ones for accuracies.

Résumé :
Visual surveillance in the maritime domain has been explored for more than a decade. Although it has produced a number of working systems and resulted in a mature technology, surveillance has been restricted to the port facilities or areas close to the coastline assuming a fixed-camera scenario. This dissertation presents several contributions in the domain of maritime surveillance. First, a novel algorithm for open-sea visual maritime surveillance is introduced. We explore a challenging situation with a camera mounted on a buoy or other floating platform. The developed algorithm detects, localizes, and tracks ships in the field of view of the camera. Specifically, our method is uniquely designed to handle a rapidly moving camera. Its performance is robust in the presence of a random relatively-large camera motion. In the context of ship detection, a new horizon detection scheme for a complex maritime domain is also developed. Second, the performance of the ship detection algorithm is evaluated on a dataset of 55,000 images. Accuracy of detection of up to 88% of ships is achieved. Lastly, we consider the topic of detection of the vanishing line of the ocean surface plane as a way to estimate the horizon in difficult situations. This allows extension of the ship-detection algorithm to beyond open-sea scenarios.

This thesis examines resistance to surveillance in everyday life and, in doing so, responds to gaps within the field of surveillance studies through the development of a more rigorous framework for understanding power, surveillance and resistance. This framework reflects the development of more technologically enhanced forms of surveillance and takes into account the cultural and social influences upon notions of privacy and monitoring which hinder opposition to surveillance. As opposed to earlier frameworks for understanding power and surveillance, this framework places resistance as a central focus. This is developed through engagement with the work of Henri Lefebvre and Guy Debord with a focus on their critiques of everyday life, depiction of rhythms for understanding power, the notion of the spectacle for understanding the seductive aspects of surveillance and the use of their practices of resistance as conceptual tools for developing a theoretical framework for understanding practices of resistance to surveillance in everyday life. This framework is developed through the exploration of these conceptual tools within the context of contemporary forms of surveillance and engagement with contemporary theorists whose ideas resonate with those of Henri Lefebvre and Guy Debord in their depiction of contemporary forms of monitoring, control and resistance. Three sites of surveillance are explored within this thesis through which this framework is explored and deployed. The first examines the difficulties of resistance within the urban environment. The second explores the seductive aspects of surveillance through an exploration of how surveillance is consumed and embraced, these things complicating the development of practices of resistance. The third case explores artistic engagements with surveillance practices and illustrates the framework developed through examples from these artists. These case studies demonstrate the importance of the framework developed here. The thesis as a whole suggests new ways of thinking about surveillance and resistance to surveillance.

The overall background for the thesis is the need to develop new methods for monitoring machines subject to nonstationary operating conditions of speed and load, as typified by wind turbines. This has become particularly important because of the increasing prevalence of wind turbines for the sustainable supply of electrical power. Because of the cost of installing and maintaining wind turbines, often situated in remote areas and increasingly used off-shore, it has become imperative to use the most up-to-date monitoring methods to avoid unforeseen failure. For the same reason there has been a tendency to increase the size of individual units, but this gives problems for the transmissions used to convert the low speed input at a fraction of a Hz to the speed of conventional generators in the range 16-30 Hz or so. The power delivered by a turbine is proportional to the square of its diameter, but the input torque is proportional to the cube, and a large part of the cost of the gearbox is related to the torque. Anecdotally, this appears to have resulted in a situation where many transmissions are failing in a shorter time than their design life, and this means not only that their design must be improved, but also that they must be monitored more closely than many other machines, to detect and diagnose incipient faults at the earliest possible stage. The thesis seeks to help to redress the situation by proposing a number of innovative methods to improve the detection and diagnosis of faults in machines with variable speed and load, and especially wind turbine transmissions, not only to make the monitoring more efficient, but also more economical

Yang, Chao. « From surveys to surveillance strategies : a case study of life satisfaction ». Diss., University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1810.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Social media surveillance is becoming more and more popular. However, current surveillance methods do not utilize well-respected surveys, which were established over many decades in domains outside of computer science. Also the evaluation of the previous social media surveillance is not sufficient, especially for surveillance of happiness on social media. These motivated us to develop a general computational methodology for translating a well-known survey into a social media surveillance strategy. Therefore, traditional surveys could be utilized to broaden social media surveillance. The methodology could bridge domains like psychology and social science with computer science. We use life satisfaction on social media as a case study to illustrate our survey-to-surveillance methodology. We start with a famous life satisfaction survey, expand the survey statements to generate templates. Then we use the templates to build queries in our information retrieval system to retrieve the social media posts which could be considered as valid responses to the original survey. Filters were utilized to boost the performance of the retrieval system of our surveillance method. To evaluate our surveillance method, we developed a novel method to build the gold standard dataset. Instead of evaluating all the data instances like the traditional way, we ask human workers to "find'' as many of the positives as possible in the dataset, the rest are assumed to be negatives. We used the method to build the gold standard dataset for the life satisfaction case study. We also build three more gold standard datasets to further demonstrate the value of our method. Using the life satisfaction gold standard dataset, we show that performance of our surveillance method of life satisfaction outperforms other popular methods (lexicon and machine learning based methods) used by previous researchers. Using our surveillance method of life satisfaction on social media, we did a comprehensive analysis of life satisfaction expressions on Twitter. We not only show the time series, daily and weekly cycle of life satisfaction on social media, but also found the differences in characteristics for users with different life satisfaction expressions. These include psychosocial features such as anxiety, anger and depression. In addition, we present the geographic distribution of life satisfaction, including the life satisfaction across the U.S. and places around the world. This thesis is the first to systematically explore life satisfaction expressions over Twitter. This is done using computational methods that derive from an established survey on life satisfaction.

Abstract. Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), a monopartitebegomovirus, is one of the most devastating viruses of cultivated tomatoes and poses increasing threat to tomato production worldwide. Because all accessions of the cultivated tomato are susceptible to these viruses, wild tomato species have become a valuable resource of resistance genes. QTL controlling resistance to TYLCV and other begomoviruses (Ty loci) were introgressed from several wild tomato species and mapped to the tomato genome. Additionally, a non-isogenic F₁diallel study demonstrated that several of these resistance sources may interact with each other, and in some cases generate hybrid plants displaying lower symptoms and higher fruit yield compared to their parental lines, while their respective resistance genes are not necessarily allelic. This suggests that pyramiding genes originating from different resistance sources can be effective in obtaining lines and cultivars which are highly resistant to begomoviruses. Molecular tools needed to test this hypothesis have been developed by our labs and can thus significantly improve our understanding of the mechanisms of begomovirus resistance and how to efficiently exploit them to develop wider and more durable resistance. Five non-allelic Ty loci with relatively major effects have been mapped to the tomato genome using molecular DNA markers, thereby establishing tools for efficient marker assisted selection, pyramiding of multiple genes, and map based gene cloning: Ty-1, Ty-2, Ty-3, Ty-4, and ty-5. This research focused on Ty-3 and Ty-4 due to their broad range of resistance to different begomoviruses, including ToMoV, and on ty-5 due to its exceptionally high level of resistance to TYLCV and other begomoviruses. Our aims were: (1) clone Ty-3, and fine map Ty-4 and Ty-5 genes, (2)introgress each gene into two backgroundsand develop semi isogenic lines harboring all possible combinations of the three genes while minimizing linkage-drag, (3) test the resulting lines, and F₁ hybrids made with them, for symptom severity and yield components, and (4) identify and functionally characterize candidate genes that map to chromosomal segments which harbor the resistance loci. During the course of this research we have: (1) found that the allelic Ty-1 and Ty-3 represent two alternative alleles of the gene coding DFDGD-RDRP; (2) found that ty-5is highly likely encoded by the messenger RNA surveillance factor PELOTA (validation is at progress with positive results); (3) continued the map-based cloning of Ty-4; (4) generated all possible gene combinations among Ty-1, Ty-3 and ty-5, including their F₁ counterparts, and tested them for TYLCV and ToMoV resistance; (5) found that the symptomless line TY172, carrying ty-5, also carries a novel allele of Ty-1 (termed Ty-1ⱽ). The main scientific and agricultural implications of this research are as follows: (1) We have developed recombination free DNA markers that will substantially facilitate the introgression of Ty-1, Ty-3 and ty-5 as well as their combinations; (2) We have identified the genes controlling TYLCV resistance at the Ty-1/Ty-3 and ty-5 loci, thus enabling an in-depth analyses of the mechanisms that facilitate begomovirus resistance; (3) Pyramiding of Ty resistance loci is highly effective in providing significantly higher TYLCV resistance.

Résumé :
Robert Duncan Milne (1844-99), from Cupar, Fife, was a pioneering author of science fiction stories, most of which appeared in San Francisco’s Argonaut magazine in the 1880s and ’90s. SF historian Sam Moskowitz credits Milne with being the first full-time SF writer, and his contribution to the genre is arguably greater than anyone else including Stevenson and Conan Doyle, yet it has all but disappeared into oblivion. Milne was fascinated by science. He drew on the work of Scottish physicists and inventors such as James Clark Maxwell and Alexander Graham Bell into the possibilities of electromagnetic forces and new communications media to overcome distances in space and time. Milne wrote about visual time-travelling long before H.G. Wells. He foresaw virtual ‘tele-presencing’, remote surveillance, mobile phones and worldwide satellite communications – not to mention climate change, scientific terrorism and drone warfare, cryogenics and molecular reengineering. Milne also wrote on alien life forms, artificial immortality, identity theft and personality exchange, lost worlds and the rediscovery of extinct species. ‘A New Palingenesis’, originally published in The Argonaut on July 7th 1883, and adapted in this comic, is a secular version of the resurrection myth. Mary Shelley was the first scientiser of the occult to rework the supernatural idea of reanimating the dead through the mysterious powers of electricity in Frankenstein (1818). In Milne’s story, in which Doctor S- dissolves his terminally ill wife’s body in order to bring her back to life in restored health, is a striking, further modernisation of Frankenstein, to reflect late-nineteenth century interest in electromagnetic science and spiritualism. In particular, it is a retelling of Shelley’s narrative strand about Frankenstein’s aborted attempt to shape a female mate for his creature, but also his misogynistic ambition to bypass the sexual principle in reproducing life altogether. By doing so, Milne interfused Shelley’s updating of the Promethean myth with others. ‘A New Palingenesis’ is also a version of Pygmalion and his male-ordered, wish-fulfilling desire to animate his idealised female sculpture, Galatea from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, perhaps giving a positive twist to Orpheus’s attempt to bring his corpse-bride Eurydice back from the underworld as well? With its basis in spiritualist ideas about the soul as a kind of electrical intelligence, detachable from the body but a material entity nonetheless, Doctor S- treats his wife as an ‘intelligent battery’. He is thus able to preserve her personality after death and renew her body simultaneously because that captured electrical intelligence also carries a DNA-like code for rebuilding the individual organism itself from its chemical constituents. The descriptions of the experiment and the body’s gradual re-materialisation are among Milne’s most visually impressive, anticipating the X-raylike anatomisation and reversal of Griffin’s disappearance process in Wells’s The Invisible Man (1897). In the context of the 1880s, it must have been a compelling scientisation of the paranormal, combining highly technical descriptions of the Doctor’s system of electrically linked glass coffins with ghostly imagery. It is both dramatic and highly visual, even cinematic in its descriptions, and is here brought to life in the form of a comic.
