Résumé :
The proposed research is substantively and conceptually related to research on the history of domestic library science and is directly devoted to the methodological and educational activities of the famous Ukrainian librarian L. Khavkinа in Odessa 1925 year. The article uses authentic materials stored in the funds of the Odessa Regional State Archive and in the funds of the Book Museum of the Odessa State Scientific Library. Among them are such unique documents as the minutes of the meetings of the presidium of the Library Association of Odessa in 1925 year, the report of the Bibinspektura on conducting a seminar with the participation of L. Khavkinа and, finally, own financial receipts made by L. Khavkinа. These documents state that the information provided during the methodological meetings by L. Khavkinа made an unforgettable impression on the Odessa library community and encouraged it to further the fruitful development of the Odessa library business and prompted the centralization of Soviet libraries in the Odessa region and further centralized exchange of methodological, scientific and educational, library and bibliographic literature and information. However, unfortunately, L. Khavkinа's stay in Odessa and holding a library seminar was accidental and took place on the recommendation of Agitprom Gubkom and the Odessa library community did not make a special professional impression on L. Khavkinа, so in the field of professional research interests of the famous librarian further was not included.

Résumé :
AbstractThe Odessa Museum of Archaeology was founded in 1825 by local antiquarians. The museum's collection grew in part due to excavations of classical sites in the region, in part due to gifts and purchases from dealers in classical antiquities. Up to the Second World War the focus of the Museum's activities was classical archaeology. In the post-war period this expanded to include the whole of the ancient history of the region from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. The museum now houses one of the best collections of Classical Antiquities in the former Soviet Union and the third-ranking Egyptological collection. The museum formed from 1972 part of the Soviet Academy system and undertook fieldwork on the Lower Dniester at Bronze Age sites, as well as at classical sites such as Tyras, Nikonion, the site of the ancient Odessos, and Leuke and medieval sites such as Belgorod.

Résumé :
The article examines ethnographic parks, open-air museums and cave settlements of Ukraine for the relevance of creating an ethnographic park in Odessa. Tourist centers of territorial tourism systems are, as a rule, historical settlements that have valuable objects of cultural heritage and are determined according to the List of Historical Settlements of Ukraine. The role of tourist centers, in addition to historical settlements, is played by almost all regional cities, which, in addition to monuments, also have notable objects of modern architecture. Most ethnographic parks and open-air museums are located in the northwestern part of Ukraine. One of the most famous open-air museums of our country is the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine, better known as the Pirogov Museum, which is located in the village of Pirogov, Kyiv region. The open-air Ethnographic Museum "Frumushyka-Nova Bessarabian Village" (2008) has only recently appeared in Odessa region. Another interesting type of settlement found on the territory of our country is Cave settlements (fortresses, cities and monasteries), the most famous "Cave Cities" are located in Crimea. On the mainland of Ukraine, cave settlements are mainly represented by "Cave monasteries". Odessa "Shkodova Mountain" is the center of Usativ culture, on the top of the mountain there is the Usativ cemetery and the Usativ burial mound, at the foot of it – another Cossack cemetery and the famous "Cave Houses" – unique historical monuments of the end of the 18th century, which need to be preserved as a unique cultural heritage of the Cossack era in Odessa. This territory, with appropriate natural and landscape resources within the settlement, which has a natural landscape, historical monuments, a beach and bathing area (a good location on the shore of the Khadzhibey estuary) and the presence of recreational facilities (Sanatorium "Kuyalnik"), can become a wonderful a short-term recreation area for tourists and residents of Odessa. All this indicates the urgency of creating an ethnographic museum in the city of Odessa called "Shkodova Mountain", taking into account the historical and archaeological value of this territory.

Résumé :
When the events known as the “Russian Spring” began in the aftermath of Ukraine’s Euromaidan Revolution in February 2014, Odessa oblast seemed like it would be particularly vulnerable to separatist activity. This paper offers a tentative explanation for why Odessa oblast escaped war in the 2014–15 phase of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. To do so, it chronicles events in Odessa oblast between fall 2013 and spring 2015 drawing on secondary sources such as news articles, blogs, social media posts, YouTube footage, official statements, and reports. Odessa-based elites’ decision to support Ukrainian sovereignty was an important factor hindering the realization of a Donetsk or Luhansk scenario. However, the weak Oblast Administration in the spring of 2014 and the upcoming mayoral elections created a volatile environment that various individuals (oligarchs, politicians, criminal networks) exploited to maintain or enhance their influence in the region. The internationalization of the conflict in the spring of 2014 presented Odessans with stark existential choices which undermined the city’s violence-avoiding dispute resolution techniques and culminated in the violence on May 2.

Résumé :
The article examines the history of the Odessa catacombs, focuses on the history of research of underground labyrinths, and their gradual transformation from objects of scientific interest to tourist objects. We understand the tourist image of the region as the system of rationally and emotionally formed ideas, which are based on specific features of the territory, emphasizing its individuality from the point of view of the tourists. Tourist image always is woven into a certain historical context and social situation. Each era generates its special perception of the environment, changing the era creates a modification of tourist image of the region. The Odessa catacombs, which today are an integral part of the tourist image of the Black Sea region, also have changed in the minds of people from time to time – from their purely practical application to the production of limestone; for a while they had a negative reputation as a refuge for criminal elements, smugglers. At the beginning of the last century researchers have engaged in advanced studies of catacombs. Only in the second half of the twentieth century, the catacombs became interesting tourist destination for individual tourists, but in the 21st century and for mass tourism. Thus, the purpose of this research is to update the modern views about the catacombs and underground museums of the Black Sea region and their contribution to the formation of the tourist image of the region. The history of the formation of the catacombs shows that they are obliged to exist in their existence by the ancient Pontian limestone, which was extracted as a building material by locals. Today, the length of the catacombs of Odessa and its suburbs reaches for various data from 1.7 to 3.0 thousand kilometers; they are famous for their multistage and meandering passages of underground galleries. The first studies of the dungeons were done by the paleontologist O. Nordman, the geologist M. Barbot de Marne, T. G. Hrytsay, modern – A. Dobrolyubsky, K. Pronin, M. Baranetsky, A. Babich, V. Yudin, and others. Several museums were created for tourists: the Museum of Partisan Glory in the village of Nerubaysk, the underground Grotto of the Odessa Art Museum, the museum «Catacombs of Odessa» under the Moldavanka district and in the city center «Kantakuzen's Catacombs». The quality of images that arise in mass tourists is directly related to the process of knowledge of the territory. In this connection, the development of travel routes as a way of getting acquainted with the territory becomes especially important. Moreover, contemporary museums are interested in attracting a wide target audience; they also offer expositions of different directions from mine history to various legends about the use of dungeons, from unique paleontological finds to historical drawings and inscriptions on the walls of the catacombs. As a result of understanding the importance of the existence of such an invaluable scientific and tourist facility, as well as maintaining it in a proper condition for historical and cultural monument, influences the formation of a positive tourist image of the Black Sea region.

Résumé :
The article reveals the historical and local history activities of the libraries of the Odessa region in the second half of the 40s – 80s XX century. The analysis of this activity indicates that despite the great difficulties (the residual principle of financing culture, and the weak material and technical base of libraries), they have become real centers of local history work in the region. During this period, libraries have accumulated a significant bibliographic base on local history issues, acquired extensive experience in working with local history research. In the development of library local lore, an important role was played by bibliographers of local lore of Odessa scientific libraries. Thanks to their activities, a local history fund was collected in almost every library, catalogs and card indexes were created, which included numerous materials on various local history topics. That is why libraries performed the social functions of education and culture units and became centers of local history. However, the regional studies of the regional libraries require further in-depth study, because by that time they, acting as regional information centers, were engaged in the search, storage and provision of local history literature for public use. The development of library local lore in the region was negatively affected by those general tendencies of social life arising from the very nature of the then totalitarian regime.

Résumé :
The analysis of 4 stone slabs with a series of Sarmatian tamgas is based on a series of new detailed photos and on the interpretation of influence of geological factors on the modern appearance of the slabs. The Sarmatian slabs from Olbia and Krivoi Rog were installed vertically, probably on top of the hills. Later these steles were tipped face up and covered with earth, which may be due to meteorological magic. The peasants who found them later worshipped them. In Olbia depicts the scene of the conclusion of the union, where 4 hands hold different vessels and are accompanied by tamgas. In the center is tamga 6, associated with Crimean Sarmatians. Here are the signs of clans of Crimea and DonBasin, which were depicted in two stages. In Krivoi Rog 50 tamgas of 46 types are engraved around the head of the Master of Animals, which were applied for about 3 centuries. The earliest signs are associated with the Kuban and Crimea. Since the middle of the 1st c. CE, the tamgas of influential groups of Western Ukraine and the Lower Don and the barbarians of the Crimea predominate, since the middle of the 2nd c. CE the signs of the Lower Don are the most frequent. It the center there are two important signs of the 2nd c. CE (Khorezmian king Artaw and co-ruler of the Bosporan Eupator), the analogies to the signs of Kangju and Khorezm. On the slab from Tanais of 236 CE there are 5 signs of local Sarmatians. On the slab from Tanais of 192 CE a large tamga of a local clan is important, it connected with the elite of Xiongnu later with Sogdia and Chach of the period of Hunnic rule.

Résumé :
The Douglas Summerland Collection is a fictional "monographically based history"1. In essence this research is concerned with the current debates about history recording, authenticity of the photograph, methods of history construction and how the audience digests new 'knowledge'. The narrative for this body of work is drawn from a small album of maritime photographs discovered in 2004 within the archives of the Port Chalmers Regional Maritime Museum in New Zealand. The album contains vernacular images of life onboard several sailing ships from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including the DH Sterling and the William Mitchell. Through investigating the'truth' systems promoted by the photograph within the presentations of histories this research draws a link between the development of colonialism and the perception of photography. It also deliberates on how 'truth' perception is still a major part of an audience's knowledge base. 1. Résumé :
The City of Springfield, Massachusetts is one of the largest cities in western Massachusetts, and was established on the Connecticut River for trading and as a fur-collecting post. In 18th and early 19th century, it experienced an industrial boom and became a regional financial center. Springfield became a major railroad center and grew to become the regional center for banking, finance, and courts. However, in mid-19th century Springfield suffered due to the flooding of the Connecticut River and the disinvestment in industry. These resulted in an urban sprawl as people started moving away from heart of the city. Now, once again, the city is trying to revitalize its downtown and neighboring areas to attract people by improving different types of social and cultural amenities. In this thesis, the author studies the relation of the city with its natural asset ‘The Connecticut Riverfront’ which can be a great place to attract people towards the heart of the city. The author has also researched the various reasons causing this natural asset to be underutilized for several years. In addition, the author also explores the possibilities of connecting the Springfield downtown to the riverfront, providing safe and undisturbed access mainly to pedestrians, physically challenged people, and bike riders. Research shows that the existing transportation paths are the major barriers discouraging people from reaching the riverfront. In order to overcome this problem, a design solution is proposed including a safe, pedestrian-friendly link from the downtown area to the riverfront mitigating all the transportation paths such as highway, high speed traffic roads, and railway tracks. The proposed link will give encouragement to local artist and will also aim to boost local businesses by providing sites for museums, exhibitions, art galleries, food courts, and retail shops. This structure will not only improve the accessibility but it will also provide public open spaces where people can gather for various activities and can also enjoy the scenic view of the riverfront. In Addition, local people can also enjoy the water viewing restaurant and bar overlooking Connecticut River. Lastly, this connecting link lays the foundation for further development of the riverfront area due to increased accessibility to this asset.

Résumé :
In this article, Kamila Kudkiewicz is dedicated to the question of Polish national museums in the nineteenth century. At the end of the eighteenth century, the historical territory of Poland was divided among Russia, Austria, and Prussia. Each of these countries had its own laws and policies towards Poles: take, for example, the policies of Russification and Germanization implemented by the Russian and German authorities in their respective territories and, contrastingly, the autonomy granted to Polish Galicia in Austria-Hungary after 1860. Despite the differences between the regions, in the second half of the nineteenth century, Poles founded museums that were perceived to be 'national', whether on a de facto basis - as attested by publications and written sources from the period - or because they had the word 'national' in their very name. Although early initiatives to create museums with the designation 'national' were undertaken in Poland as early as the eighteenth century, actual national museums (or institutions considered to be such) only emerged after 1870. The latter consisted of : the Musee National Polonais (Polish National Museum) in Rapperswil, Switzerland (opened 1870), the Muzeum im. Mielzynskich w Poznaniu (Mielzynski Museum in Poznan, 1881), the Muzeum Narodowe w Krakowie (National Museum in Krakow, 1883), the Muzeum Narodowe im. Krola Jana III we Lwowie (King Jan III National Museum in Lviv, 1908), and the Muzeum Sztuk Pieknych w Warszawie (Museum of Fine Arts in Warsaw), which was called after 1916 the Muzeum Narodowe w Warszawie (National Museum in Warsaw). The most important Polish national museums were established in large urban centres, namely in regional capitals (i.e. Poznan, the capital of Greater Poland in the nineteenth century within the borders of Prussia, and Krakow, the main city of Galicia in the nineteenth century within Austria and later Austria-Hungary), but also in other nations (i.e. Rapperswil in Switzerland). They were founded by city authorities, learned societies, or private collectors. The fact that the museums were established and managed by various entities made their activities very diverse. However, one can observe two main areas of interest for Polish national museums in the nineteenth century: national (Polish) history, on the one hand, and Polish art, primarily contemporary painting, on the other. In some cases, like that of Rapperswil, the dominating elements of the collection were connected with historical elements that, at least initially, were also sentimental, nostalgic, and emotional in character. This sentimentality bespeaks the institution's intended influence on viewers. Elsewhere, the wish to exhibit and promote Polish art prevailed over the interest in objects related to national history (i.e. the Mielzynski Museum in Poznan). And certain museums underwent an evolution in their declared status, from that of a national gallery of painting to that of an institution attempting to show various aspects of Polish culture (National Museum in Krakow). The present analysis of the activity of these museums will focus on the discourse accompanying their creation, the goals set by their founders, and the curation of their exhibitions.

Résumé :
AbstractShared heritage is a concept that serves to address cultural ties between countries or people that emanate from colonial history, including conflicts and contestations as well as connections and commonalities. This contribution evaluates the potential of shared heritage to work as a tool for a transformative heritage management practice through exploring the post-colonial heritage landscape of Iringa, Tanzania. The historical dynamics of colonialism have left various tangible and intangible traces throughout Iringa Town and Region. Combining ethnographic and historical methods, this paper examines historical narratives of different social groups, representations of these trajectories in the regional museum, and community responses to buildings and sites of colonial origin in the cityscape. In line with UNESCO’s Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach, observed applied conservation activities are discussed in the light of local development processes. I argue that shared heritage can serve as a viable concept to grapple with the colonial legacy vested in the HUL while at the same time using the discursive energy provided by these conflicts to support the cultural, social, and economic development of communities.

Résumé :
'Feelings Are Still Very Strong': Sites of Public Memory in Hillsville, Virginia," examines the vernacular and official histories of the shoot-out in three museums local to Hillsville. These histories demonstrate the values of the communities where they are located and provide epideictic history making moments as patrons are lead through three different constructions and experiences of the shoot-out. These constructions provide vernacular, humanistic views located in the courthouse museum to official, stereotypical portrayals in the Mt. Airy Regional History Museum. The courthouse museum gives a ground zero approach that depends on the guidance of the curator, Bill Webb, to guide patrons through. Whereas the Mount Airy Regional History Museum attempts to officially place Hillsville in the construction of the Appalachian region. Lastly, the most vernacular museum, the Gooch Harmon Museum, asks patrons to construct their own versions of the shoot-out through an assortment of artifacts ranging from local newspapers to more intimate objects like Floyd Allen's saddle bags. Each of these museums demonstrates that the story of the shoot-out continues to emerge in Hillsville's culture today.

Résumé :
The first period of the activity of the Society for the Promotion of Regional Culture in Częstochowa was the time of a huge work done and the implementation of all the assumptions of the Founding Meeting. We managed to create the Museum of Regional Collections, inspire others to collect monuments and protect the fauna and flora of the Częstochowa region. Most importantly, the periodical publishing house “Ziemia Częstochowska” was initiated, which fills the gap and becomes a contribution to the preparation of the Encyclopedia of Częstochowa. Such active activity of the Society was interrupted first by the death of the president, Wacław Płodowski, and then by the outbreak of World War II on September 1, 1939, which forced the Board to suspend its activities. It seems, however, that the research directions set out in the Foreword by Kazimierz Kühn to the first volume of Częstochowa Land, as in the spiritual testament, are still being implemented.

Utilizing autoethnography, a Guyanese scholar reads the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, Georgia as a site not of national significance primarily, but of regional significance. Contributor Carolyn Walcott does not mean to diminish the museum in such a claim; rather, it opens the museum to being of significance to regions globally, thinking about how the African diaspora and the Global South relate to the U.S. South as a colonized, developing region. In a walkthrough of the curated space, the comparison with Guyana history allows the reader to experience this better vantage point of global regionalism and its activist and trauma-healing potential.

Résumé :
Indonesia marked a new era, known as the Reformation Era, in 1998 after the downfall of Suharto, the main face of the regime called the New Order (Orde Baru) and ran the government from 1966 to 1998. This long-run government creates certain structures in many sectors, including the museum sector in Indonesia. Suharto leads the government in a totalitarian manner, his power control over many layers, including the use of museums as regime propaganda tools. The propaganda in the museums such as a standardized storyline, the use of historical versions that are approved by the government, and the representation of violence through the military tale with the nation’s great enemy is made for the majority of museums from the west to east Indonesia at that time. Thus, after almost two-decade after the downfall of the New Order regime how Indonesian museum transform into this new era? In the new democratic era, museum management is brought back to the regional government. The museums are encouraged to writing the local history and deconstruct the storyline from the previous regime. Not only just stop there, but there are alsomany new museums open to the public with new concepts or storylines to revive the audience. Even, the new museum was also erected by the late president’s family to rewrite the narration of the hero story of Suharto in Yogyakarta. This article aims to look up the change in the Indonesian museum post-New Order regime. How they adjust curatorial narration to present the storyline, is there any change to re-write the new narrative, or they actually still represent the New-Order idea along with the violence symbolic that never will deconstruct.
