Résumé :
This chapter presents a case example of a patient with progressive unilateral hearing loss who was ultimately diagnosed with a skull base schwannoma. The workup and differential diagnosis are presented and options for treatment are reviewed based on published evidence. Treatment options include observation, stereotactic radiosurgery, and surgical resection. The objective status of a patient’s hearing as well as the patient’s age influence treatment recommendations and the surgical approach. Intraoperative neuromonitoring provides real-time assessment of facial nerve irritation as well as cochlear nerve function and is an important component of surgery. Complication avoidance and management are also discussed in this chapter.

Résumé :
John Locke and Thomas Nagel dismiss the suggestion that seeing a scarlet red is like hearing a trumpet’s blare. Charles S. Peirce, however, argues that because there are no ideas that are unanalyzable and completely determinate, we should be able to develop an objective phenomenological vocabulary to describe the similarities and differences among diverse experiences. By developing a table of the most general classes into which elements of consciousness fall, Peirce aims to develop an objective phenomenological vocabulary. The key to developing such a vocabulary is a theory of formal logic. As Kant had proposed we base a table of the metaphysical categories on the logical forms of judgments, Peirce recommends we base a table of the phenomenological categories on the logical forms of propositions.

Résumé :
This book serves as the go-to resource for those who are interested in police body-worn cameras. The first part of the book (chapters 2 and 3) delves deeply into the claims made about BWCs by both advocates and critics, coupled with an exhaustive examination of the research base on each of those claims. Moreover, throughout the book, there are quotes and vignettes from experts in the field who have hands-on experience with police BWCs to illustrate important points. The authors also offer insights on the potential reasons for variation in research findings. In chapter 4, they examine the past, present, and future of police BWCs through two different, complementary lenses. The first is the diffusion of innovations framework. The second lens is the evidence-based policing framework. Both the diffusion of innovation and evidence-based policing frameworks provide insights on the “how and why” questions regarding current rates of BWC adoption, and just as important, they provide an informed position to consider the prospects for BWCs in the future. There are two objectives in chapter 5. The first is a forward-looking review of the next set of challenges for BWC adopters. These challenge center on both human and technological elements of a BWC program. The second objective centers on the importance of planning and implementation. The book ends with a few important takeaway messages on the role of BWCs in policing and how the technology can help police to achieve their core mission.

Résumé :
This chapter examines both non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and violent non-state actors (VNSAs). NGOs come in many shapes and sizes. Many have a charitable base and some will have humanitarian or human rights objectives; others focus on sustainable development and aid. Often their concern will be a single issue. Their objectives are focused and invariably single-minded, less able or willing to take into account other aspects. As a result, their relationship with governments, although sometimes harmonious, may be one of tension and occasionally confrontation. VNSAs, meanwhile, represent other categories of non-state actors whose activities are at the opposite pole to those whose benign activity has been described above and where states have lost their monopoly. Their categories number warlords, militias, insurgencies, and criminal organizations, including pirates and people traffickers.

Résumé :
The Social Dynamics of Open Data is a collection of peer reviewed papers presented at the 2nd Open Data Research Symposium (ODRS) held in Madrid, Spain, on 5 October 2016. Research is critical to developing a more rigorous and fine-combed analysis not only of why open data is valuable, but how it is valuable and under what specific conditions. The objective of the Open Data Research Symposium and the subsequent collection of chapters published here is to build such a stronger evidence base. This base is essential to understanding what open datas impacts have been to date, and how positive impacts can be enabled and amplified. Consequently, common to the majority of chapters in this collection is the attempt by the authors to draw on existing scientific theories, and to apply them to open data to better explain the socially embedded dynamics that account for open datas successes and failures in contributing to a more equitable and just society.

Due to the absence of a definitive pathological finding, objective biomarker, or imaging correlate, neuropathic pain syndromes may be graded as possible or probable depending on the results of neurological assessment. It is important to acknowledge the diagnostic uncertainty inherent in such a grading system based on probability in a condition for which there is no “gold standard” upon which to base validation studies. Neuropathic pain is a multidimensional entity, and specific syndromes may have distinct sensory profiles (i.e. different combinations of sensory signs and symptoms). Clinical suspicion for an underlying neuropathic mechanism increases when pain is characterized by features such as numbness, paresthesias, and allodynia and when the symptoms are generally resistant to standard over-the-counter and prescribed analgesics. In this chapter a variety pain scales are reviewed.

Résumé :
How does budgeting work, and how is it useful? What are standard costs and how do they help in controlling production? How can a balanced scorecard improve control? ‘Accounting as control’ looks at some ways in which accounting can be used by managers to control their organizations. The two main high-level purposes of budgeting are to optimize the use of the economic resources within the firm in order to maximize profit, and to help the firm to achieve its overall strategic objectives. Six aspects of budgeting are considered: planning, motivation, delegation, communication/coordination, control, and performance evaluation. Cash flow forecasts, flexible budgeting, zero-base budgeting, standard costings, and balanced scorecards are also explained.

Résumé :
By the dawn of the twenty-first century, Europe's agriculture had been reshaped dramatically, since policy makers viewed rural space as more than a resource base of crops, animal products, and timber. Rapid urbanisation and industrial growth since 1945 has covered substantial stretches of rural Europe with bricks, concrete, and tarmac. Despite challenges and reversals, collectivisation was implemented throughout Eastern Europe by the early 1960s. In Western Europe, the main objective of the postwar farm policies was to increase food supplies. Changing patterns of trade, concern over the costs of supporting farmers, worries about food quality and animal health, the challenge of sustainability, and the need to retain viable economies in the countryside have reconfigured the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union, and have shifted the attention of policy makers away from food to wider issues of rural management.

Maritime environments, such as oceans, seas, bays, lakes, rivers, marshes, and cenotes, and the landscapes bordering them, hold maritime archaeological sites. This article describes archaeological sites in the Caribbean. It gives information on regional and international developments in the Caribbean region, in which all the countries share the same maritime heritage. This maritime heritage is described by different case studies presented here. Furthermore, this article provides an insight into the future of maritime archaeology in this region. It calls attention to the need of identifying key persons, training them, and placing them in authorities of management and research. Archaeological excavations must be undertaken selectively and in such a way that scientific objectives, adequate funding, professional staff, and provisions for documentation, conservation, curation, reporting, and public interpretation are well looked into.

This educational product is part of the author's dissertation carried out in the Postgraduate Program in Professional Master's in National Network for Teaching Environmental Sciences at the Federal University of Paraná. The work entitled Protocol for the application of Environmental Education activities for teachers of Rural Education originated from the activities developed at the Municipal School of Campo in Amparo, a fishing community, located in Paranaguá Bay, in the State of Paraná. The general objective of this investigation was to develop actions of awareness and Environmental Education in the School to be applied in the community. Based on these actions, the purpose was to develop a protocol for rural education teachers to train child environmental agents with the function of being multipliers of local knowledge and citizenship attitudes for their families and community residents. In the moments of interaction between school and community, we tried to work on awareness in environmental education so that in the future local environmental problems can be reduced or eliminated.

Résumé :
Idris al-Sanusi’s claims to political authority grew in direct relationship to the spread of the colonial state after World War I. One of the primary objectives of negotiations for both parties was the expansion of railway networks in the Cyrenaican interior. Railways symbolized Italy’s arrival as a modern imperial power. For Idris, railways also promised to secure a Sanusi monopoly over trading routes as a source of political authority. The emphasis on railways, however, led to a loss of support from Idris’s political base. Railway construction threatened to undermine the dominance of Sanusi-affiliated tribes over trans-Saharan trade routes based on their access to camels and water supplies. Facing the dissolution of support for his position as a colonial intermediary, Idris al-Sanusi left for self-imposed exile in Egypt in early 1923, months after the rise of a fascist movement in Italy that embraced a virulent form of nationalist expansion.

Résumé :
Leaders of professional organizations may initiate a merger to overcome obstacles to organic growth but have very limited power to ensure its success. Post-merger integration in professional organizations is entirely dependent upon the cooperation of the professionals who control access to key resources, such as knowledge, client relationships, and reputation. However, sharing these resources potentially undermines the power base of these professionals. The chapter identifies two reasons why professionals may be reluctant to cooperate with merger objectives: ‘fear of exploitation’ and ‘fear of contamination’. It presents the ‘School Dance’ model of post-merger integration, which outlines the gradual process by which professionals across the organization take responsibility for making the merger a success. Leaders of merging professional organizations require a subtle understanding of what drives professionals in a post-merger context, the willingness to hold back from direct action, and the perception to judge when the time is right to intervene.

Résumé :
The National Rifle Association (NRA) is one of the most powerful interest groups in America, and has consistently managed to defeat or weaken proposed gun regulations — even despite widespread public support for stricter laws and the prevalence of mass shootings and gun-related deaths. This book provides an unprecedented look at how this controversial organization built its political power and deploys it on behalf of its pro-gun agenda. Taking readers from the 1930s to the age of Donald Trump, the book traces how the NRA's immense influence on national politics arises from its ability to shape the political outlooks and actions of its followers. The book draws on nearly a century of archival records and surveys to show how the organization has fashioned a distinct worldview around gun ownership and has used it to mobilize its supporters. It reveals how the NRA's cultivation of a large, unified, and active base has enabled it to build a resilient alliance with the Republican Party, and examines why the NRA and its members formed an important constituency that helped fuel Trump's unlikely political rise. The book sheds vital new light on how the NRA has grown powerful by mobilizing average Americans, and how it uses its GOP alliance to advance its objectives and shape the national agenda.

Résumé :
In recent years, across Europe, North America and the Antipodes, a significant number of countries, states and regions have devised strategies that aim to end long-term homelessness and the need to sleep rough. Long considered an intractable or ‘wicked’ social problem, the notion that homelessness could be ended represents a significant sea change in conceptualising and responding to homelessness. A key driver for states, regions and municipalities to devise plans to end homelessness, and an optimism that this policy objective can be achieved, is that there is an increasing research evidence base on what works to end homelessness. This increasingly sophisticated research evidence covers both the prevention of homelessness in the first instance and the support mechanisms that can ensure sustainable exits and stable, secure accommodation for people who have experienced homelessness. This book explores these issues through a detailed comparison of the experiences of Denmark, Finland and Ireland over the past decade. From 2008 to the end of 2018, the numbers living rough and in temporary and emergency accommodation showed a decline of 72 per cent in Finland, while the number of households in emergency accommodation increased by 300 per cent in Ireland; in Denmark, the number of adults in emergency accommodation increased by 12 per cent over the shorter time period of 2009–17. The purpose of this book is to offer explanations for stark variations in these outcomes despite similar starting points.

Résumé :
The objective of this work was to characterize agricultural and livestock holdings in the regions of Castilla and León (Salamanca and Zamora) in Spain and the Centro Region in Portugal. In order to carry out this work, the available statistical databases were used, according to the themes related to the social, economic, environmental and technological structure. Thus, it was intended to deepen aspects such as the use of energy, use/treatment of agricultural wastes, soil fertilization systems, management of water resources, mobilization practices, among others, in order to have a comprehensive view of these regions as a background information to find agronomic sustainable solutions. This characterization was carried out based on the NUT III, as it offers greater availability of statistical data. In the case of Spain, the NUT III territorial base is considered to be very vast, and it was preferable to carry out this work with some data obtained from agricultural areas. However, statistical data are not available for all these areas under consideration. Even so, in some cases municipal data are presented, which are considered to be more representative. This book consists of two parts, the first describes the state of the art in the cooperation area of Castile and León and the second part in the Central Region of Portugal. The present work was supported by the Interrreg projects 0340_SYMBIOSIS_3_E and 0745_SYMBIOSIS_II_3_E. Thus, the publication is bilingual with texts written in Portuguese or Spanish.

Résumé :
Language Learning in Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Theory to Classroom Practice is the long-awaited revision of the only textbook on primary language instruction written with classroom teachers of deaf and hard-of-hearing children in mind. It builds on the work of the previous version while providing access to the entire first version on a supplemental website. An important feature of this book is that it describes four real teachers and demonstrates the application of the concepts discussed with the children on their caseloads. Up-to-date chapters on theory of language learning, assessment, and evidence-based practice replace removed chapters. Chapters on English and American Sign Language structure and on the three major approaches (listening and spoken language, bilingual-bimodal instruction, and American Sign Language instruction) are updated. The chapters on teaching vocabulary and morphosyntax, how to ask and answer questions, and writing language objectives for individualized education plans are expanded. Specific examples of real cases are incorporated throughout the book. Finally, after a theoretical base of information on language instruction, many of the chapters provide language teachers with specific examples of how to answer the question: “What should I do on Monday?” The author avoids promoting one or another philosophy, presenting all and demonstrating the commonalities across classroom language instruction approaches for deaf and hard-of-hearing children.

The contributors offer theoretically informed and critical discussions of these issues that facilitate more objective and realistic assessments of related problems and their possible solutions. The handbook is the first original volume on prisons and prisoners to cover topics relevant to both the social and behavioral sciences with equal depth paid to each area. Focusing on the impact of these issues on the philosophies of incarceration (retribution, general and specific deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabilitation) is also unique to a single volume, providing a larger picture of their implications. Included are updated discussions of the always popular topics such as conditions of confinement and prisoner subcultures and topics that have taken or are destined to take greater priority in the field such as inmate victimization, special offender populations, prison programs, prisoner re-entry, and privatization. The handbook is divided into six sections corresponding to topic areas identified as major focal points of discussion and research in the field. As such, it provides a single source that bridges social and behavioral science perspectives, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of these topics while providing academics with a knowledge base that will more effectively inform their own research. For practitioners, particularly those in the treatment sector, the book provides an excellent overview of best program practices that are empirically based and research-driven.

Résumé :
This is a preliminary examination related to a portal faced of a public building in the city of La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain, carved in the mid-sixteenth century, of rich lines and architectural symbols characteristic of the Renaissance early stage. It was set up in ashlars, of chemical composition and granulometry that gave to it the classification of toba basaltic volcanic, compact granular, reddish in colour. Its high chemical resistance was not able to withstand the 450 years of exposure and at the time of diagnosis its surface had a high degree of dirt adhered and a profound loss of material by disaggregation and breakdowns, what had partially destroyed valuable elements of its characterization. This preliminary investigation fell exclusively on the stone material that composed the faced, although could be observed other elements like roof tile in the ceiling, and carpentry on the window and door. For that reason, the focus of this work has been directed to the stylistic symbolism and diagnose of the main element, being restricted to the stonework, where was the essence of the centennial facade. Therefore, this previous analysis was performed objecting to prepare the base for a restoration work considering the archaeological line of thought, in order to retrieve and maintain its forms and volumes, working on fundamental architectural elements to rescue and ensure to future generations the true message that was exteriorized.

Résumé :
Seven million youngsters--one in four adolescents--have only limited potential for becoming productive adults because they are at high risk for encountering serious problems at home, in school, or in their communities. This is one of the disturbing findings in this unique overview of what is known about young people aged 10 to 17 growing up in the United States today. The book explores four problem areas that are the subject of a great deal of public interest and social concern: delinquency, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and school failure. In examining these problem areas, Dryfoos has three objectives: to present a more cogent picture of adolescents who are at risk of problem behaviors and where they fit in society; to synthesize the experience of programs that have been successful in changing various aspects of these behaviors; and to propose strategies for using this knowledge base to implement more effective approaches to helping youngsters succeed. Among the key concepts emerging from this study are the importance of intense individual attention, social skills training, exposure to the world of work, and packaging components in broad, community-wide interventions. Schools are recognized as the focal institution in prevention, not only in regard to helping children achieve academically, but in giving young people access to social support and health programs. The author also proposes comprehensive youth development initiatives at the local, state and national level, based on programs shown to be effective in real practice. This landmark, state-of-the-art study represents an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the welfare and current problems of youth, including psychologists, sociologists, school administrators, state and federal officials, policymakers, and concerned parents.

Résumé :
A key objective of the study of work-family balance detailed in this report was to build an evidence base to inform policy creation or refinement targeting work-family balance and related implementation standards to ensure the protection and preservation of Qatari families. Two complementary projects were designed and implemented to achieve this key objective. The first project was a qualitative study involving in-depth interviews with 20 Qatari working adults (10 males and 10 females). The interviews were designed to learn the meaning of work-family balance among Qataris, identify the factors shaping work-family balance or the lack thereof, and collect firsthand detailed information on the use and value of policy-relevant work-family balance sup - ports for working Qataris. The second component was a survey designed to describe work-family balance among working Qatari adults, determine potential health and well-being consequences of poor work-family balance, and characterize Qataris’ use of and preferences for new work-family balance supports. The data from the qualitative interviews tell a very clear story of work-family balance among Qataris. Work-family balance is primarily viewed as working adults’ ability to meet responsibilities in both the work and family domains. Although work-fam - ily balance was valued and sought after, participants viewed work-family balance as an idyllic goal that is unattainable. Indeed, when individuals were asked about the last time they experienced balance, the most common response was “during my last vacation or extended holiday.” The challenge of achieving work-family balance was equally shared by males and females, although the challenge was heightened for females. Qataris recognized that “work” was essential to securing or providing a desirable family life; that is, work provided the financial wherewithal to obtain the features and comforts of contemporary family life in Qatar. However, the cost of this financial wherewithal was work hours and a psychological toll characterized as “long” and “exhausting” which left workers with insufficient time and energy for the family. Participants commented on the absolute necessity of paid maternity leave for work-family balance, and suggested it be expanded. Participants also discussed the importance of high-quality childcare, and the need for greater flexibility for attending to family responsibilities during the working day. Data from the quantitative national survey reinforce the results from the qualitative interviews. Work-family balance is a challenge for most working adults: if work-fam - ily balance were given scores like academic grades in school, the majority of both males and females would earn a "C" or lower (average, minimal pass or failure). As intimated in the qualitative data, working females’ work-family balance is statistically poorer than that of males. Poor work-family balance is associated with poorer physical and mental health, with particularly strong negative associations with depression. It appears the Human Resource Law of 2016 was effective in raising awareness of and access to paid maternity leave. However, a substantial minority of working Qataris lack access to work-family balance supports from their employer, and the supports that are provided by employers do not meet the expectations of the average Qatari worker.
