Résumé :
Nurses are an integral part of the interdisciplinary team caring for patients with HIV/AIDS. Since the start of the epidemic nurses have provided care across the healthcare spectrum, serving as care coordinators, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse practitioners. To competently care for people with HIV or AIDS, nurses have to provide care that is advanced and specialized. Nurses working in the field of HIV or AIDS care require advanced knowledge of virology and infectious disease to address the clinical needs of persons with HIV-related illness. This chapter describes the historical engagement of nurses in the epidemic and the nursing strategies that support interprofessional work. It addresses the key aspects of nursing care of the HIV-infected adult throughout the spectrum of HIV illness. The chapter focuses on the nurse’s role in minimizing risk, preventing HIV transmission, caring for persons with HIV, helping individuals to cope with illness, and negotiating the healthcare system.

Résumé :
Virginia Henderson’s classic definition of nursing, known as the unique function of the nurse, trades on the nurse imagining what patients would do for themselves to restore or promote health or to lead to a peaceful death, if they had the will, knowledge, or power. Nursing imagination involves sympathy, the feeling of caring for the humanity shared with another. In this way, imagination involves the kind of relationship Carol Gilligan calls the responsible relationship: nurses respond to the humanity of their patients through nursing imagination. Insofar as humanity is common, this imaginative exercise leads nurses to imagine the kind of human they want to be and the kind of society they want for all. The habit of imagination gives nurses the capacity to be touched by the circumstances of others, which is another aspect of the ethical significance of nursing.

Résumé :
Advances in surgery have been combined with innovation in anaesthesia techniques. Chapter 3 highlights the increasingly flexible models of surgical care delivery and the role of the nurse in these care settings. Preparation prior to surgery is increasingly being delivered by nurses in the pre-operative phase of care. The knowledge requirements of the nurse in this field are complex, involving a greater understanding of applied physiology and pharmacology, pre-operative testing methods, and assessment modalities. This chapter guides the nurse in the assessment process, choice of diagnostic tests, and preparation of the patient physically and psychologically for surgery.

Résumé :
The new edition of Care of the Acutely Ill Adult enables nursing staff to develop an in-depth understanding of the knowledge required to care for patients whose condition is deteriorating. The book emphasizes the importance of systematic assessment, interpretation of clinical signs of deterioration, and the need to escalate the patient in a timely manner. Current evidence-based practice and up-to-date guidelines are included in each systems-based chapter and case studies are used throughout the book to enable nurses to apply knowledge to patient scenarios. In recognition of the dynamic nature of acute care delivery, new chapters have been included that focus on pain management and planning for care when recovery is unlikely. This book remains an essential purchase for any nurse working in an acute care setting.
