We studied the distribution of the homeodomain proteins Pdx-1 and Nkx 6.1 in the developing rat pancreas. During early development, nuclear staining for both Pdx-1 and Nkx 6.1 occurred in most epithelial cells of the pancreatic anlage. Subsequently, Nkx 6.1 became more β-cell-restricted, and Pdx-1 also occurred in other islet cell types and in the duodenal epithelium. During early pancreatic development, cells co-storing insulin and glucagon were regularly detected. The vast majority of these did not possess nuclear staining for either Pdx-1 or Nkx 6.1. Subsequently, cells storing insulin only appeared. Such cells displayed strongly Pdx-1- and Nkx 6.1-positive nuclei. Therefore, Nkx 6.1, like Pdx-1, may be an important factor in pancreatic development and in mature insulin cell function.

Résumé :
We investigate two current problems in active galactic nuclei – the mode of fueling the putative black hole, and the question whether the circumnuclear regions have experienced unusual chemical processing – by studying the kinematics and chemical abundance of the gas in the nuclear region of galaxies with sites of ongoing star formation near the active nucleus. We discuss the results for three galaxies with nuclear rings: NGC1097 – for which we recently discovered broad double peaked Hα and Hβ emission from its LINER nucleus (Storchi-Bergmann, Baldwin & Wilson 1993, ApJ 410, L11); NGC1672, which also presents a LINER nucleus; and NGC5248, a galaxy with a ring but no nuclear activity, used as a comparison. Narrow–band images obtained with the CTIO 1.5m telescope were used to map the emitting gas. Longslit spectroscopy obtained with the 4m telescope at high spectral resolution (at several positions over the nuclear region) was used to obtain the gas velocity field. In the two galaxies with LINER nucleus, the starforming rings are located in the turnover of the rotation curves, which show that the gas is rotating faster at the rings than farther out. We conclude that the rings are associated with inner Lindblad ressonances, which may be particularly effective in forcing gas inwards and fuelling the black hole (Wilson et al. 1986, ApJ 310, 121). From the emission line ratios the gas excitation is maped, and it is found that even in NGC5248, the nucleus presents a different excitation, suggesting a very mild LINER activity. Low-dispersion spectroscopy was also obtained in order to calculate the chemical abundances and compare the values obtained for the nuclear gas with those obtained for the HII regions in the ring and beyond the ring (when present). The goal is to check the results of recent studies (Storchi-Bergmann & Pastoriza 1989, ApJ 347, 195; 1990, PASP 102, 1359), based on spectroscopy of the nucleus, which indicate an enhanced abundance of nitrogen, up to 5 times solar for the gas of the narrow line region of LINER and Seyfert 2 nuclei.

Reproductive technologies have been often used as a tool in research not strictly connected with developmental biology. In this study, we retrace the experimental routes that have led to the adoption of two reproductive technologies, ICSI and somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), as biological assays to probe the ‘functionality’ of the genome from dead cells. The structural peculiarities of the spermatozoa nucleus, namely its lower water content and its compact chromatin structure, have made it the preferred cell for these experiments. The studies, primarily focused on mice, have demonstrated an unexpected stability of the spermatozoa nuclei, which retained the capacity to form pronuclei once injected into the oocytes even after severe denaturing agents like acid treatment and high-temperature exposure. These findings inspired further research culminating in the production of mice after ICSI of lyophilized spermatozoa. The demonstrated non-equivalence between cell vitality and nuclear vitality in spermatozoa prompted analogous studies on somatic cells. Somatic cells were treated with the same physical stress applied to spermatozoa and were injected into enucleated sheep oocytes. Despite the presumptive fragile nuclear structure, nuclei from non-viable cells (heat treated) directed early and post-implantation embryonic development on nuclear transfer, resulting in normal offspring. Recently, lyophilized somatic cells used for nuclear transfer have developed into normal embryos. In summary, ICSI and SCNT have been useful tools to prove that alternative strategies for storing banks of non-viable cells are realistic. Finally, the potential application of freeze-dried spermatozoa and cells is also discussed.

Résumé :
The homeobox gene product Nkx 6.1 is of unknown function but is expressed in the pancreas and the antropyloric mucosa of the stomach. In the adult pancreas, Nkx 6.1 possesses an insulin cell-restricted distribution, whereas its localization in the stomach is unknown. We now show that the vast majority of serotonin-producing enterochromaffin cells of the antropyloric mucosa contain Nkx 6.1-immunoreactive nuclei. In addition, a subpopulation of cells co-storing serotonin and gastrin display Nkx 6.1-positive nuclei. Such cells have been postulated to represent precursors of mature gastrin and serotonin cells. The nuclei of the co-storing cells have previously also been found to be positive for another homeodomain protein, Pdx-1. Pdx-1-deficient animals were therefore investigated and were found to be devoid of Nkx 6.1-positive nuclei. Our data show that Pdx-1 is needed for Nkx 6.1 expression and suggest a role for Nkx 6.1 in the maturation of gastrin- and serotonin-positive precursor cells.

Résumé :
The paper theoretically studies the possibility of energy transformation of fast and epithermal neutrons to energy of coherent photon radiation at the expense of a neutron pumping of the active medium formed by nucleus with longliving isomerous states. The channel of the nucleus formation in isomeric state as a daughter nucleus resulting from the nuclear reaction of neutron capture by a lighter nucleus is taken into consideration for the first time. Assessment of neutron flux spectrum parameters providing transition from the main state into one of the excited ones for the nuclei of isotopes54Xe130,10Ne22is made. It was shown that to transit the isotope nuclei into the excited state by forward neutron scattering on the nuclei it is necessary to “select” the isotopes not only with great specific energy of nucleons coupling but also with a small value of the neutron absorption cross section. Moreover, the paper performs the analysis of cross sections dependence of radiative neutron capture by the nuclei of gadolinium isotopes Gd155and Gd156. As a result, the speed of Gd156nuclei formation is stated to exceed the speed of their “burnup” in the neutron flux. It is provided by a unique combination of absorbing properties of two isotopes of gadolinium Gd155 and Gd156 in both thermal and resonance regions of neutron energy. We have formulated the conditions required for making isotope nuclei excited by forward neutron scattering on nuclei and for storing nuclei in excited states. The relation which allows estimating processes parameters of neutron capture by nuclei, formation and decay of nuclei isomeric states is obtained as a result of analytical solution of differential equations system of nuclide kinetics taking into account the decay of nuclei isomeric states. The paper makes the possibility analysis of neutron pumping of the participating medium created by the hafnium isotope nuclei. The properties of hafnium isotopes nuclei is found to do not allow providing conditions for population inversion of energy levels due to the formation of hafnium nuclei in isomeric state Hf178m2in the neutron flux. The paper shows the possibility of excess energy accumulation in the participating medium created by the nuclei of the pair of gadolinium isotopes Gd155and Gd156due to formation and storage of nuclei in isomeric state at radiative neutron capture by the nuclei of the stable isotope with a smaller mass. It is concluded that when the active medium created by gadolinium nuclei is pumped by neutrons with the flux density of the order of 1013cm-2·s-1, the condition of levels population inversion can be achieved in a few tens of seconds. The wave length of the radiation generated by the medium is 0.0006 nm. Sintered ceramics Gd2O3based on enriched in the 155-th isotope of gadolinium can be considered a possible active medium. Thus, there is a possibility of creation of the laser techniques of new generation with the parameters providing its application in pulse power engineering of the future.

We propose an aerial robot-based system for monitoring environmental nuclear radiation in real time by taking advantage of the robot responsiveness and efficiency. In the proposed system, we employed small-sized nuclear radiation monitors, 3G/2.4G wireless communication and information distribution techniques to quickly and accurately image the site as well as to measure dose and distribution parameters of nuclear radiation. These data can be sent to the on-site center and the data center via 3G network, allowing data analysis, processing, storing and distribution. Our tests showed that our system was capable of satisfying environmental monitoring requirements on real-time data collection and transmission. Our system provides a novel monitoring platform for transmitting, storing and processing data of environmental nuclear radiation.

Italy has been storing U.S. nuclear tactical weapons since the fifties. During the Cold War Rome considered hosting nuclear weapons a tool to strengthen the international ranking of the country, hoping that it provides opportunity to restore trust in Italy’s international image, which had been shaken by World War II. As a consequence of the effect of bipolar logic on Italian domestic politics, hosting nuclear weapons guaranteed that the Italian Communist Party remained in opposition. Although the original reasons of hosting U.S. nuclear weapons have disappeared at the end of the Cold War, Italy is not actively promoting nuclear disarmament.

Abstract We report a case of crystal-storing histiocytosis associated with large cell lymphoma in a patient with a history of monocytoid B-cell lymphoma 10 years previously. The cervical lymph node biopsy showed a diffuse proliferation of large lymphocytes with vesicular nuclear chromatin and distinct nucleoli. These lymphocytes were associated with numerous immunoglobulin λ light-chain crystal-storing histiocytes, which morphologically resembled rhabdomyoblasts. Occasional lymphoid cells also showed large immunoglobulin crystals. This case establishes the association of crystal-storing histiocytes with lymphomas of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue and emphasizes the need for immunophenotyping to distinguish these unusual cases from other tumors, particularly adult rhabdomyomas.

Résumé :
This article discusses a range of depictions and discussions of nuclear war, which appeared on British screens in the first half of the Cold War, in order to understand the changing way nuclear weapons were viewed within British culture. Using such screened images to understand how nuclear war was constructed and represented within British culture, the article argues that the hydrogen bomb, not the atomic bomb, was the true harbinger of the nuclear revolution that transformed cultural understandings of warfare and destruction. Although the atomic bomb created a great deal of anxiety within British popular culture, representations of atomic attack elided atomic destruction with that experienced in 1939–45, emphasising the ‘survivability’ of atomic war. In the thermonuclear era, the Second World War could not undertake the same symbolic work. The image of the city-destroying bomb was an imaginative as well as technological step-change. Screened representations stressed that a thermonuclear war would literally end the world. As such, they preceded, and indeed provided the cultural climate for, the rise of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). The Campaign exploited and further popularised this idea of the apocalyptic nuclear war as a key aspect of its political and moral standpoint. The article concludes, however, that the cultural hegemony of this vision of nuclear war equally helped underpin notions of nuclear deterrence. The basic assumptions about the nature of nuclear war constructed and circulated on British screens therefore formed part of CND's ‘cultural’ victory but the article also explains why this did not translate into the political realm.

Résumé :
The nuclear industry in the United States of America has accumulated about 70,000 metric tons of high-level nuclear waste over the past decades; at present, this waste is temporarily stored close to the nuclear power plants. The industry and the Department of Energy are now facing two related challenges: (i) will a permanent geological repository, e.g., Yucca Mountain, become available in the future, and if yes, when?; (ii) should the high-level waste be transported to interim storage facilities in the meantime, which may be safer and more cost economic? This paper presents a mathematical transportation model that evaluates the economic challenges and costs associated with different scenarios regarding the opening of a long-term geological repository. The model results suggest that any further delay in opening a long-term storage increases cost and consolidated interim storage facilities should be built now. We show that Yucca Mountain’s capacity is insufficient and additional storage is necessary. A sensitivity analysis for the reprocessing of high-level waste finds this uneconomic in all cases. This paper thus emphasizes the urgency of dealing with the high-level nuclear waste and informs the debate between the nuclear industry and policymakers on the basis of objective data and quantitative analysis.

Résumé :
Steroid hormones such as estrogens are known to signal through ligand-regulated transcription factors of the nuclear receptor superfamily. In addition, they elicit rapid nongenomic responses from membrane-associated receptors. One of these receptors belongs to an entirely different family of proteins. The G protein-coupled and seven-transmembrane receptor, GPR30, is now widely recognized as an estrogen receptor (ER), hence its official new acronym GPER. It appears to mediate a wide range of responses to estrogen in a large variety of cell types. Its functions are clearly distinct from those of the classical nuclear ERs, although these pathways may overlap and interact in some cases. Here, we review the history of the discovery of this new ER, the evidence for the claim that it is an ER, its signal transduction, and its potential functions in physiology and disease.

But critical scholars have also looked beyond and below the distractions of mushroom clouds, to additional and alternative landscapes that are obscured by secrecy and relative banality.

Résumé :
The paper about the Indonesian “zombie” pocong examines specific features of the ghost stories in Indonesia, tracks the etymology of the words hantu (“ghost,” “undead”) and pocong (“wrapped in shroud”), and includes a translation of a typical ghost story (“Pocong and a Cart Hawker”). It introduces the hitherto understudied material in Russia that counts only a small number of Indonesian and Anglophone works. The aims of this paper include collecting data about this mythological creature from Indonesian sources, studying the image of pocong and contemporary narratives about him, searching his closest parallels in the world folklore, and interpreting the meanings of the character discovered in modern Indonesian culture. For religious people, pocong is a symbol of the frailty of life. Some traditional Muslims in modern Indonesia practice pocong related rituals (“Pocong’s oath,” pesugihan). Nowadays, the image of pocong is demythologized as it circulates in urban flesh-mobs, pranks, and horror films. The typology of this scary image is surprisingly similar not to Muslim genies but to from Chinese hopping vampires. Modern zombie studies shed light on the genealogy of pocong as a walking dead. Todd K. Platts discusses the spectrum of potential underpinnings of the zombie that include racism, terrorism, class inequality, disintegration of a nuclear family, consumer culture etc that may be applied to pocong as well. Pocong symbolizes oppressed common folk and this image is frequently used in mass political protests. Interpretation of pocong as a marginalized figure is relevant for the folklore studies in Indonesia, as well as for the study of horror-discourse in general.

It can be divided into two nuclei, the first narrating the adventures of a young Rainouart and the second developing the dubbing of Vivien: in both cases, events of the biographies of two popular heroes only hinted at in other major poems, which a compiler decided to narrate extensively to fill the gap in the cycle of chansons on the geste Monglane. This paper, alongside the first critical edition of that text, offers a broad introduction on the literary and cultural features of these two stories (which can be classified as exemplars of the enfances sub-genre of medieval French epic).

Résumé :
Optimizing existing nuclear power plants adding developing power technology can help find effective ways of improving variable power loads in an electric power system. One of the most promising options is combining a nuclear power plant with a newly developed autonomous hydrogen complex reported in our research. The ability of storing unused energy and releasing it when needed will raise contribution of nuclear power plants in compensating improving variable power loads, shorten emissions as well as contribution of conventional thermal power plants into electric power generation. Also, as we demonstrated in our previous research results, a low-power steam turbine plant used in the said autonomous hydrogen complex can support an auxiliary power system of a nuclear power plant reusing residual reactor heat in case of an outage.

Résumé :
The RSE NNC RK branch “Institute of Atomic Energy” has been conducted investigations in the field of nuclear power safety since the late 1982. These investigations have recently resulted in accumulation of a vast amount of experimental data widely applied in creation, verification and validation of calculation codes intended to analyze behavior of nuclear reactors under transient and emergency modes including analysis of reactor conditions in the course of propagation of severe accident with fuel melting. However, a positive effect of application these data has drastically dropped because there is no systematic approach for solution such problems like collection, processing and storing of experimental results along with planning and conducting of the experiments to receive the data that are missed but required for complete understanding of severe accident propagation. In this connection it is obviously that data integration as information-analytical system (IAS) will make it possible to create multifunctional tool for data storing, processing and analysis as well as to get the data much more applicable useful.

Résumé :
The 2001 terrorist attacks in the USA and the 2011 seismic events in Japan have brought into sharp relief the vulnerabilities involved in storing nuclear waste on the land’s surface. Nuclear engineers and waste managers are deciding that disposing nuclear waste deep underground is the preferred management option. However, deep disposal of nuclear waste is replete with enormous technical uncertainties. A proposed solution to protect against both the technical vagaries of deep disposal and the dangers of surface events is to store the nuclear waste at shallow depths underground. This paper explores social and ethical issues that are relevant to such shallow storage, including security motivations, intergenerational equity, nuclear stigma, and community acceptance. One of the main ethical questions to emerge is whether it is right for the present generation to burden local communities and future generations with these problems since neither local peoples nor future people have sanctioned the industrial and military processes that have produced the waste in the first place.

Like a fissionable isotope, knowledge has a half-life. Fortunately, teachers can craft information in ways that can change the nuclear heart of subject matter to ensure interest, linkage, and retention, all through the telling of a good story. Taking students' existing knowledge and background into account to carefully craft appropriate analogy-integrated stories, key concepts and information can be rendered familiar, accessible, engaging, and enjoyable. “The Marvels of the (Squabbling) Cell” is an example story that employs anthropomorphosis to convey general cell biology in a lighthearted manner in which personal experience and social rules enable a deeper understanding of complex biological subject matter. Equally important, the story lives in students as a conceptual landmark that remains in view during instruction.

Résumé :
As computers are used in nuclear safety systems, security engineering is becoming more and more important in the nuclear industry. Like all highly technical endeavours, the development of nuclear safety systems is a knowledge intensive task. Unfortunately, not only do nuclear scientists and software engineers lack the security knowledge, they are also not familiar with the new security requirements. Besides, few young people are studying nuclear science, nuclear engineering and related fields. Therefore, knowledge management can play a central role in encapsulating, storing and spreading the related discipline and knowledge more efficiently in the nuclear industry. In this paper, we propose a security knowledge framework to gather and store security knowledge from those regulatory-based security activities. We adopt an object-oriented paradigm which is easy for software engineers to understand and to express tacit and explicit knowledge. Its aim is intended to decouple between platform-independent security knowledge and platform-specific security controls. Finally, an example is presented to demonstrate the feasibility of linking between security controls and knowledge ontology in our framework.

The goal of this work is to map the gas excitation and kinematics in the inner ~ 2 kiloparsecs of the radio-galaxy Arp 102B. Though being classified as an E0 galaxy, Arp 102B shows a nuclear gas spiral (Fathi et al., in preparation). Previous studies of the gas kinematics in nuclear spirals have led to the conclusion that these structures usually trace gas inflows (Fathi et al. 2006; [Storchi-Bergmann et al. 2007; [Riffel et al. 2008). We have used integral field spectroscopy obtained with GMOS instrument of the Gemini North telescope to investigate the nature of the nuclear spiral arms. The spectra cover the wavelength range 4400–7300 Å over a field of view of 5.″5 × 3.″9 (2.7 kpc × 1.9 kpc).

Résumé :
Context.— Traditional methods for storing histologic and cytologic specimens for future use in molecular assays have consisted of either snap-freezing with cryopreservation or formalin-fixing, paraffin-embedding the samples. Although snap-freezing with cryopreservation is recommended for better preservation of nucleic acids, the infrastructure and space required for archiving impose challenges for high-volume pathology laboratories. Cost-effective, long-term storage at room temperature; relatively easy shipment; and standardized handling can be achieved with formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples, but formalin fixation induces fragmentation and chemical modification of nucleic acids. Advances in next-generation sequencing platforms, coupled with an increase in diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive molecular biomarkers have created a demand for high-quality nucleic acids. To address issues of the quality of nucleic acid and logistics in sample acquisition, alternatives for specimen preservation and long-term storage have been described and include novel universal tissue fixatives, stabilizers, and technologies. Objective.— To collect, retrieve, and review information from studies describing the use of nucleic acids recovered from cytologic/tissue specimens stored on Flinders Technology Associates (FTA, GE Whatman, Maidstone, Kent, United Kingdom) cards for downstream molecular applications. Data Sources.— An electronic literature search in the PubMed (National Center for Biotechnology Information, Bethesda, Maryland) database allowed the selection of manuscripts addressing the use of FTA cards for storage of cytologic samples for molecular analysis. Only articles published in English were retrieved. Conclusions.— The use of FTA cards is a versatile method for fostering multicenter, international collaborations and clinical trials that require centralized testing, long-distance shipment, and high-quality nucleic acids for molecular techniques. Studies with controlled temperature are required to test the quality of recovered RNA after long-term storage.

Calculation of structural features of proteins, nucleic acids, and nucleic acid-protein complexes on the basis of their geometries and studying various interactions within these macromolecules, for which high-resolution structures are stored in Protein Data Bank (PDB), require parsing and extraction of suitable data stored in text files. To perform these operations on large scale in the face of the growing amount of macromolecular data in public repositories, we propose to perform them in the distributed environment of Azure Data Lake and scale the calculations on the Cloud. In this paper, we present dedicated data extractors for PDB files that can be used in various types of calculations performed over protein and nucleic acids structures in the Azure Data Lake. Results of our tests show that the Cloud storage space occupied by the macromolecular data can be successfully reduced by using compression of PDB files without significant loss of data processing efficiency. Moreover, our experiments show that the performed calculations can be significantly accelerated when using large sequential files for storing macromolecular data and by parallelizing the calculations and data extractions that precede them. Finally, the paper shows how all the calculations can be performed in a declarative way in U-SQL scripts for Data Lake Analytics.

The objective of this paper is to present the work carried out at the French Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN) to process nuclear data in the unresolved resonance range (URR). Recently, a great deal of effort has been devoted at IRSN to develop an independent nuclear data processing system, GAIA2. First, a nuclear data storing object, independent from the ENDF-6 format, has been implemented in order to transmit information between the components of a module-based scheme. Then, the generation of probability tables in the URR has been added as an independent module named TOP (as Table Of Probability), and tested on a selected set of benchmarks. The methods used and the results are discussed, and some limitations in the manner to construct the tables are pointed out.

Résumé :
Abstract The amount and variety of information used during the nuclear decommissioning project is enormous. If we consider that data and information coming from the whole operational phase of a nuclear power plant (NPP) is important for safe and efficient planning of such projects and waste treatment, packaging, storage and disposal use data coming from the dismantling operations, we can expect that nuclear decommissioning data are live and can be useful for decades. Taking into account a very broad variety of such data (e.g. but not only, their format, storage media, structure, meaning, relevancy, …) it is not a trivial task to develop a complex and reasonably structured database for storing all this information. This paper presents an overview of our research activities in the field of standardization in terms of the data structure and storage technologies and outlines the overall ‘single-source-of-truth’ architecture with centralized server and communication principles for storage and transfer of data used in nuclear decommissioning projects.

This paper presents a corpus-based analysis of Italian spontaneous speech in the theoretical framework of Language into Act Theory (Cresti 2000; Cresti & Moneglia 2010; Moneglia & Raso 2014). A selection of IPIC database (Panunzi & Gregori 2012) has been studied to describe the syntactic behaviors of specific structures named stanzas. Stanzas are terminated sequences prosodically recognizable in the speech flow as chains of nuclei on the same prosodic level. This structure marks nearly 10% of the spoken communication and it is typical of monologues, stories, and life narrations. The analysis shows an additive and flat syntax mostly composed by chained clauses and juxtapositions, without a hierarchical order: stanzas are usually formed by main clauses one after the other or connected through coordinative conjunctions; subordination is not so common and mostly in the form of causal or relative subordinate clauses.

Résumé :
Nuclear receptors play important roles in regulating fat metabolism and energy production in humans. The regulatory functions and endogenous ligands of many nuclear receptors are still unidentified, however. Here, we report that CYP-37A1 (ortholog of human cytochrome P450 CYP4V2), EMB-8 (ortholog of human P450 oxidoreductase POR), and DAF-12 (homolog of human nuclear receptors VDR/LXR) constitute a hormone synthesis and nuclear receptor pathway in Caenorhabditis elegans. This pathway specifically regulates the thermosensitive fusion of fat-storing lipid droplets. CYP-37A1, together with EMB-8, synthesizes a lipophilic hormone not identical to Δ7-dafachronic acid, which represses the fusion-promoting function of DAF-12. CYP-37A1 also negatively regulates thermotolerance and lifespan at high temperature in a DAF-12–dependent manner. Human CYP4V2 can substitute for CYP-37A1 in C. elegans. This finding suggests the existence of a conserved CYP4V2-POR–nuclear receptor pathway that functions in converting multilocular lipid droplets to unilocular ones in human cells; misregulation of this pathway may lead to pathogenic fat storage.

What do its stories tell us about the globalisation of Chinese culture? When the need to ‘save the world’ has crossed over from sci-fi to science, from entertainment to activism, and from a thought experiment to imminent danger, humans as a whole face challenges of their own making: climate change, environmental pollution, pandemics, extinctions, exclusions and nuclear annihilation. Résumé :
Abstract Solid-state quantum registers are exceptional for storing quantum information at room temperature with long coherence time. Nevertheless, practical applications toward quantum supremacy require even longer coherence time to allow for more complex algorithms. In this work we propose a quantum register that lies in a decoherence-protected subspace to be implemented with nuclear spins nearby a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The quantum information is encoded in two logical states composed of two carbon-13 nuclear spins, while an electron spin is used as ancilla for initialization and control. Moreover, by tuning an off-axis magnetic field we enable non-nuclear-spin-preserving transitions that we use for preparing and manipulating the register through stimulating Raman adiabatic passage. Furthermore, we consider more elaborated sequences to improve simultaneous control over the system yielding decreased gate time.

Résumé :
Simple indicative factors such as political populism and resource abundance cannot fully explain the Scottish Government's anti-nuclear energy policy. To grasp the current policy stance, it is necessary to pay attention to the wider contextualisation of policy framing and specifically the dynamic of story-telling and frame-bridging that ultimately feeds into governmental policy. The Scottish Government's decisive ‘no’ to a new nuclear fleet can be better understood by considering the underlying (and deliberate) bridging of policy frames that is noticeable between environmental, pacifist, and Scottish independence actors. This bridging not only affects the individual sets of story-telling but also develops a dynamic that reinforces individual stories and transcends well beyond the groups' original remit and objectives. With the help of policy framing analysis, research interviews and documentary analysis, the article explores the dynamic connections between anti-nuclear and independence activists and their causes in Scotland. The article highlights their triangular bridges in terms of personnel, language and story-telling and argues that these are instrumental in shaping the Scottish Government's anti-nuclear energy policy.

News items on science and technology in English-language newspapers published in different parts of India during January-December 1996 were analyzed. Results indicate that the greatest proportion of newspaper space was devoted to nuclear science and technology, followed by defense, space research, and astronomy. The Pioneer, The Hindu, and The Times of India were the newspapers that together devoted about 23 percent of the total space to items on science and technology. The sources for most of the articles (97 percent) on policy issues originated from within India, while for other stories foreign sources, including those from the United States and the United Kingdom, also contributed. Many of the items were supported by illustrations such as photographs and diagrams. The study indicates that, on average, Indian newspapers devoted far less than one percent of the total printed space to articles and stories related to science and technology.

Résumé :
The aim of this study was to develop a hemostatic agent with anti-adhesive properties and to study its effect on liver morphology, metabolic activity and hepatocyte regeneration in experimental liver injury. Methods. In 60 rats following experimental resection liver injury, the time of bleeding and the volume of blood loss were determined. Histological preparations were used to study the size of hepatocytes and their nuclei, the content of glycogen (PAS-reaction), the number of binucleated hepatocytes and the expression of Ki-67. Results. Compared with the control, an agent based on 6% sodium carboxymethylcellulose gel and 5% aminocaproic acid effectively and reliably reduces the bleeding time by 72% (217.91 s), the volume of blood loss by 74.7% (372.85 mg) (p ≤ 0.01) and the degree of blood filling of the sinusoid liver capillaries. In addition, the use of the novel gel prevents the adhesion formation. It stimulates mitotic activity of hepatocytes, accompanied by an increase in the number of binucleated hepatocytes and Ki-67 expression. By the 14th day, this activity significantly decreases. Hypertrophy of hepatocytes and their nuclei is observed by the 7th and 14th days of the experiment. This indicates both an increase in the metabolic activity of hepatocytes and intracellular regeneration. The use of the hemostatic gel does not alter the glycogen-storing function of hepatocytes, which indicates the lack of pronounced hypoxia due to effective control of bleeding. Conclusion. The local hemostatic gel based on 6% sodium carboxymethylcellulose gel and 5% aminocaproic acid can be recommended for local bleeding control in liver injuries and surgery.

Graph theory based methods represent one approach to an objective and reproducible structural analysis of tissue architecture. By these methods, neighborhood relations between a number of objects (e.g., cells) are explored and inherent to these methods are therefore certain requirements as to the number of objects to be included in the analysis. However, the question of how many objects are required to achieve reproducible values in repeated computations of proposed structural features, has previously not been adressed specifically. After digitising HE stained slides and storing them as grey level images, cell nuclei were segmented and their geometrical centre of gravity were computed, serving as the basis for construction of the Voronoi diagram (VD) and its subgraphs. Variations in repeated computations of structural features derived from these graphs were related to the number of cell nuclei included in the analysis. We demonstrate a large variation in the values of the structural features from one computation to another in one and the same section when only a limited number of cells (100–500) are included in the analysis. This variation decreased with increasing number of cells analyzed. The exact number of cells required to achieve reproducible values differ significantly between tissues, but not between separate cases of similar lesions. There are no significant differences between normal and malignantly changed tissues in oral mucosa with respect to how many cells must be included. For graph theory based analysis of tissue architecture, care must be taken to include an adequate number of objects; for some of the structural features we have tested, more than 3000 cells.

Résumé :
This article applies a method of narrative analysis to investigate the discursive contestation over the ‘Iran nuclear deal’ in the US. Specifically, it explores the struggle in the US Congress between narratives constituting the deal as a US foreign policy success or failure. The article argues that foreign policy successes and failures are socially constructed through narratives and suggests how narrative analysis as a discourse-analytical method can be employed to trace discursive contests about such constructions. Based on insights from literary studies and narratology, it shows that stories of failures and successes follow similar structures and include a number of key elements, including: a particular setting; a negative/positive characterization of individual and collective decision-makers; and an emplotment of success or failure through the attribution of credit/blame and responsibility. The article foregrounds the importance of how stories are told as an explanation for the dominance or marginality of narratives in political discourse.

Résumé :
Observational evidences of dust in the nuclear region of AGNs are substantial (Rudy 1984, ApJ, 284, 33; Jones et al. 1984, PASP, 96, 692). The ionization cones observed in several Seyfert galaxies has been interpreted as shadowing effects by a dust obscuring torus which hides the broad emission line region (BLR) and the central source (Wilson 1992; Storchi-Bergmann, Mulchaey and Wilson 1992, ApJ 395, L73). A large sample of optical and far-IR data for IRAS Seyfert galaxies has been analysed together with dust emission models (Bonatto and Pastoriza 1993), where it has been concluded that the same dust emission model can be applied to both Seyfert types. In order to further study the effects of dust in the spectra of active galactic nuclei, we have obtained spectrophotometry of 21 IRAS Seyfert galaxies in the range 3500–7200 Å and analyse them in conjuction with their IRAS fluxes. The stellar population type is derived from comparisons with normal galaxy templates using dilution effects in the K CaII line as discriminator. For 55% of the sample the population is of late type. For the rest, blue continua due to recent star formation and/or power-law may amount up to 30% at 4000Å. We conclude that the bulge stellar populations of IRAS Seyfert galaxies are similar to those of normal spirals, except that they are more reddened by E(B-V)i ∼ 0.20. Population-subtracted emission line ratios indicate on average stronger reddening for the narrow-line region (E(B-V)l ∼ 0.8. From photoionization models a power-law index for the ionizing continuum α=1.5, and a metallicity larger than solar are obtained. The most luminous IRAS galaxy of the sample (IRAS555) is discuss in detail: in order to be compatible with the observed IRAS fluxes and the optical stellar continuum, the ionizing continuum must be reddened by AV > 10 magnitudes. Consequently a dust structure in this galaxy appears to be increasingly affecting stars and gas towards the galaxy center.

Résumé :
According to regulatory requirements, when carrying out handling operations with spent nuclear fuel (SNF), prevention of damage to the spent fuel assemblies (SFA) and especially fuel elements shall be ensured. For this purpose, it is necessary to exclude the risk of SFA falling, SFA uncontrolled displacements, prevent mechanical influences on SFA, at which their damage is possible. Special requirements for handling equipment (in particular, cranes) to exclude these dangerous events, the requirements for equipment strength, resistance to external impacts, reliability, equipment design solutions, manufacturing quality are analyzed in this work. The requirements of Ukrainian and U.S. regulatory documents also are considered. The implementation of these requirements is considered on the example of handling equipment, in particular, spent nuclear fuel storage facilities. This issue is important in view of creation of new SNF storage facilities in Ukraine. These facilities include the storage facility (SFSF) for SNF from water moderated power reactors (WWER): a Сentralized SFSF for storing SNF of Rivne, Khmelnitsky and South-Ukraine Nuclear Power Plants (СSFSF), and SFSF for SNF from high-power channel reactors (RBMK): a dry type SFSF at Chornobyl nuclear power plant (ISF-2). After commissioning of these storage facilities, all spent nuclear fuel from Ukrainian nuclear power plants will be placed for long-term “dry” storage. The safety of handling operations with SNF during its preparation for long-term storage is an important factor.
