Résumé :
This work reports and describes a novel alkali-activated metakaolin as a potential binder material for the granulation of zeolites, which are widely used as CO2 adsorbents. The alkali-activated binders are zeolite-like materials, resulting in good material compatibility with zeolite-based adsorbents. A major problem during the granulation of zeolites is that their adsorption capacities decrease by about 15–20%, because typical binder materials (for example bentonite or kaolin clay) are inactive towards CO2 adsorption. A possible pathway to solve this problem is to introduce a novel binder that is also able to sorb CO2. In such a case, a binder plays a dual role, acting both as a binding material and as a sorbent. However, it is important that, alongside the adsorptive properties, a novel binder material must fulfil mechanical and morphological requirements. Thus, in this work, physical and mechanical properties of this novel binder for zeolite granulation for CO2 adsorption are studied. Alkali-activated metakaolin was found to be efficient and competitive as a binder material, when mechanical and physical properties were concerned. The compressive strengths of most of the obtained binders reported in this work are above the compressive strength threshold of 10 MPa. The future work on this novel binder will be conducted, which includes granulation-related details and the CO2 adsorptive properties of the novel binder material. Metakaolin was used as a precursor for alkali-activated binders. Binders were synthesized using varying molarity of a NaOH solution and at varying curing conditions. The final products were characterized using density measurements, compressive strength tests, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Résumé :
This study focused on developing a new copolymer binder from Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and Guna seed oil, in which the copolymer binder was used to formulate an emulsion paint. The emulsion paint formulated from the novel copolymer binder of polyvinyl acetate- hydroxylated guna seed oil (PVAc/HGSO) was characterised and compared with paint made from conventional polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) binder. Seed oil from guna was extracted mechanically using cold press method, and the extracted guna seed oil were successively subjected to epoxidation and hydroxylation reaction processes. The hydroxylated guna seed oil (HGSO) was copolymerised with conventional polyvinyl acetate in different ratio of 10 to 70% of hydroxylated oil, to formulate a novel PVAc/HGSO copolymer binder. The physico-chemical properties of the formulated copolymer binder were compared with the standard value acceptable in coating industry inorder to ascertain the better blend ratio that will be suitable for paint production. The better blend copolymer binder was used in production of an emulsion paint. The physico-chemical parameters on the formulated emulsion paint were compared with paint formulated using only PVAc as a binder and acceptable value in the coating industry. The novel formulated emulsion paint found to be increased in gloss, adhesion and flexibility, which are major setback in paint produced using conventional PVAc only as a binder. Therefore, the novel PVAc/HGSO can be used to produce an emulsion paint.

Résumé :
A novel composite binder (humic acid modified bentonite, HAMB) and two other binders (bentonite and Modified humic acid, MHA) were used to explore the effects of binders on the properties of magnetite green pellets in this study. The results of green pellet properties and drying tests show that the low doses of a humic substance-based binder can achieve the same effect as high doses of bentonite binder. A humic substance-based binder could be a promising organic binder to replace bentonite. Meanwhile, the influence mechanism of adding different binders on the strength of green pellet was discussed, and the relationship between moisture content in the pellet and the compression strength of three binders was determined. A TG-DSC analysis found that the novel composite binder (HAMB) was not a simple mix of humic acid and bentonite, in which a humic substance could change the structure of bentonite and reduce the thermal stability of bentonite, causing the HAMB composite binder to have a high decomposition temperature.

Résumé :
To evaluate binding potential of Prunus domestica gum in tablets formulations. Six tablet batches (F-1B to F-6B) were prepared by wet granulation method, containing Avicel pH 101 as diluent, sodium diclofenac as model drug using 10, 15 and 20 mg of Prunus domestica gum as binder and PVP K30 was used as standard binder. Magnesium stearate was used as lubricant. Flow properties of granules like bulk density, tapped density, Carr index, Hausner’s ratio, angle of repose as well as physical parameters of the compressed tablets including hardness, friability, thickness and disintegration time were determined and found to be satisfactory. The FTIR spectroscopic analysis showed that the formulation containing plant gum is compatible with the drug and other excipients used in tablets formulation. Hence the plant gum has role as a potential binder in tablets formulations. The dissolution profile showed that tablets formulations containing Prunus domestica gum 15 mg/200 mg of total weight of tablet as binder showed better results as compared to PVP K30.

Résumé :
The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the binding and disintegrating properties of arabinoxylan isolated from Ispaghula (Plantago ovata) husk. Atenolol and atorvastatin orodispersible tablet F1, F2 and F3 were prepared by direct compression method using arabinoxylan (12, 9, 6) mg as superdisintegrant, and F4 and F5 containing 12 mg Ispaghula husk and 12 mg sodium starch glycolate, respectively. Metformin tablets were prepared by wet granulation method F1 containing starch as binder, F2 containing arabinoxylan as binder and F3 containing arabinoxylan as binder and as superdisintegrant. Prepared tablets were evaluated for precompression parameters such as compatibility studies, bulk density, tapped density, angle of repose, Hausners ratio and Cars index and post compression parameters such as weight variation, hardness, thickness, diameter, wetting time, water absorption ratio disintegration time drug release and moisture uptake studies. Attempts were done to trace the possible disintegrant mechanism of arabinoxylan. FTIR spectra of physical blend of atenolol, atorvastatin, metformin with arabinoxylan confirmed the compatibility of excepient with formulation ingredients. All the formulations of atenolol, atorvastatin satisfied the limits of redispersion with a dispersion time of less than 60 sec. F1 showed minimum disintegration time 4 sec providing the evidence of arabinoxylan an excellent superdisintegrant when compared with F4 containing Ispaghula husk with disintegration time 30 sec and F5 contains sodium starch glycolate having disintegration time of 35 sec. Minimum wetting time of 17 sec and high water absorption ratio of F1 formulation confirmed the arabinoxylan as swelling disintegrant. The results of metformin tablet indicate that arabinoxylan could be useful to produce tablets with desired characteristics for specific purposes, and could be used as an alternative substitute binder and superdisintegrant in pharmaceutical industries. These studies provide a strong evidence for usefulness of arabinoxylan as binder and superdisintegrant and a good alternative to natural and synthetic superdisintegrant. Résumé :
In this work, the apparent activation energy (Ea) of a novel low-calcium binder was, for the first time, experimentally determined, using a calorimetric approach. Additionally, a correlation between the Ea, measured at the acceleration period with the C/S ratio of the hydration product is proposed. The Ea of the prepared pastes was determined through isothermal calorimetry tests by calculating the specific rate of reaction at different temperatures, using two different approaches. When comparing the Ea, at the acceleration period of this novel binder with the one published for alite and belite, we observed that its value is higher, which may be a result of a different hydration product formed with a distinct C/S ratio. Finally, to study the temperature effect on the compressive strength at early ages, a set of experiments with mortars was performed. The results showed that the longer the curing time at 35 °C, the higher the compressive strength after 2 days of hydration, which suggests a higher initial development of hydration products. This study also indicated that the novel binder has a higher sensitivity to temperature when compared with ordinary Portland cement (OPC).

Résumé :
The design of a novel binder is required for high-capacity silicon anodes, which typically undergo significant changes during charge/discharge cycling. Hence, in this study, a stable network structure was formed by combining tannic acid (TAc), which can be cross-linked, and poly(acrylic acid)(PAA) as an effective binder for a silicon (Si) anode. TAc is a phenolic compound and representative substance with antioxidant properties. Owing to the antioxidant ability of the C-PAA/TAc binder, side reactions during the cycling were suppressed during the formation of an appropriate solid–electrolyte interface layer. The results showed that the expansion of a silicon anode was suppressed compared with that of a conventional PAA binder. This study demonstrates that cross-linking and antioxidant capability facilitate binding and provides insights into the behavior of binders for silicon anodes. The Si anode with the C-PAA/TAc binder exhibited significantly improved cycle stability and higher Coulombic efficiency in comparison to the Si anode with well-established PAA binders. The C-PAA/TAc binder demonstrated a capacity of 1833 mA h g−1Si for 100 cycles, which is higher than that of electrodes fabricated using the conventional PAA binder. Therefore, the C-PAA/TAc binder offers better electrochemical performance.

Résumé :
Abstract Commercial LiFePO4 (LFP) electrode still cannot meet the demand of high energy density lithium-ion batteries as a result of its low theoretical specific capacity (170 mA h g−1). Instead of traditional electrochemical inert polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), the incorporation of multifunctional polymeric binder becomes a possible strategy to overcome the bottleneck of LFP cathode. Herein, a novel polyimide (PI) binder was synthesized through a facile hydrothermal polymerization route. The PI binder exhibits better connection between active particles with uniform dispersion than that of PVDF. The multifunctional PI binder not only shows well dispersion stability in the organic electrolyte, but also contributes to extra capacity because of the existence of electrochemical active carbonyl groups in the polymer chain. Besides, the high intrinsic ion conductivity of PI also results in promoted ion transfer kinetic. Consequently, the LFP cathode using PI binder (LFP–PI) shows larger capacity and better rate capability than LFP cathode with PVDF binder (LFP–PVDF). Meanwhile, the superior binding ability also endows LFP–PI with great cycling stability compared to the LFP–PVDF electrode.

Résumé :
This research confirms the metaheuristic way using the novel method of synthesis of inorganic chemical activator binder just by replacing the Al3+ ion to Fe3+ ion by chemical activation in the matrix using Taguchi’s orthogonal array. The laterite soil was made reactive using calcination processes, and the material used was Fe2O3; as a major source, it is then combined with aluminosilicate substances such as low calcium fly ash, and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and Alccofine individually are considered as binder materials, which are activated using alkaline and acid-based chemical activation. Furthermore, the outcomes using Taguchi’s optimization technique with the compressive strength behavior of each chemical inorganic polymer binder to evaluate the best suitable combination of binder with suitable activator are studied, and also, the molarity required for polymerization process is identified using the same. This is found to be the most successful and economical way to solve the real-world problem of binder by preparing the binder system from the natural source and to control the greenhouse effect from the construction industry.

Résumé :
‘Silica-defective glasses’, combined with a silicone binder, have been already shown as a promising solution for the manufacturing of glass–ceramics with complex geometries. A fundamental advantage is the fact that, after holding glass powders together from room temperature up to the firing temperature, the binder does not completely disappear. More precisely, it converts into silica when heat-treated in air. A specified ‘target’ glass–ceramic formulation results from the interaction between glass powders and the binder-derived silica. The present paper is dedicated to the extension of the approach to the coating of titanium substrates (to be used for dental and orthopedic applications), with a bioactive wollastonite–diopside glass–ceramic layer, by the simple airbrushing of suspensions of glass powders in alcoholic silicone solutions. The interaction between glass and silica from the decomposition of the binder led to crack-free glass–ceramic coatings, upon firing in air; in argon, the glass/silicone mixtures yielded novel composite coatings, embedding pyrolytic carbon. The latter phase enabled the absorption of infrared radiation from the coating, which is useful for disinfection purposes.

Résumé :
Both the binder and solid–electrolyte interface play an important role in improving the cycling stability of electrodes for Na-ion batteries. In this study, a novel tetrabutylammonium (TBA) alginate binder is used to prepare a Na0.67MnO2 electrode for sodium-ion batteries with improved electrochemical performance. The ageing of the electrodes is characterized. TBA alginate-based electrodes are compared to polyvinylidene fluoride- (PVDF) and Na alginate-based electrodes and show favorable electrochemical performance, with gravimetric capacity values of up to 164 mAh/g, which is 6% higher than measured for the electrode prepared with PVDF binder. TBA alginate-based electrodes also display good rate capability and improved cyclability. The solid–electrolyte interface of TBA alginate-based electrodes is similar to that of PVDF-based electrodes. As the only salt of alginic acid soluble in non-aqueous solvents, TBA alginate emerges as a good alternative to PVDF binder in battery applications where the water-based processing of electrode slurries is not feasible, such as the demonstrated case with Na0.67MnO2.

Résumé :
Electrical power generation by means of electrochemical systems utilizing wastewaters is a global energy challenge tackling technique for which a creation of novel eco-friendly electrode materials is in high relevance. For this purpose a Rhodophyta algae derived activated biochar anode bound with a flaxseeds mucilage binder (5, 10, 20, 30 wt.%) was formed and characterized by thermogravimetric, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis as well as conductivity and mechanical resistance determination. Activation technique with KOH prior to carbonization at 800 °C of algae was employed to obtain biocarbon with a large surface area. The highest specific surface area of 1298.49 m2/g was obtained with the binder-free sample and had a tendency to decrease with the increase of the binder content. It was estimated that biochar anodes are thermally stable at the temperature of up to 200 °C regardless of binder concentration. The concentration of the binder on the other hand had a significant influence in anodes mechanical resistance and electrical conductance: anode with 30 wt.% of the binder had the highest compressive strength equal to 104 bar; however, the highest conductivity was estimated in anode with 5 wt.% of the binder equal to 58 S/m. It is concluded that anode with 10 wt.% mucilage binder has the optimal properties necessary in MFC utilization.

Résumé :
The design of novel and high-performance binder systems is an efficient strategy to resolve the issues caused by huge volume changes of high-capacity anodes. Herein, we develop a novel water-soluble bifunctional binder composed of a conductive polythiophene polymer (PED) and high-adhesive polyacrylic acid (PAA) with abundant polar groups. Compared with conventional conductive additives, the flexible conductive polymer can solve the insufficient electrical contact between active materials and the conductive agent, thus providing the integral conductive network, which is extremely important for stable electrochemical performance. Additionally, the polar groups of this composite binder can form double H-bond interactions with the hydroxyl groups of SiO2 layers onto the silicon surface, keeping an integral electrode structure, which can decrease the continuous formation of SEI films during the repeated cycles. Benefiting from these bifunctional advantages, the Si electrodes with the composite binder delivered a high reversible capacity of 2341 mAh g−1 at 1260 mA g−1, good cycle stability with 88.8% retention of the initial reversible capacity over 100 cycles, and high-rate capacity (1150 mAh g−1 at 4200 mA g−1). This work opens up a new venture to develop multifunctional binders to enable the stable operation of high-capacity anodes for high-energy batteries.

Résumé :
A novel approach for fabricating selective absorbing coatings based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for mid-temperature solar–thermal application is presented. The developed formulations are dispersions of CNTs in water or solvents. Being coated on stainless steel (SS) by spraying, these formulations provide good characteristics of solar absorptance. The effect of CNT concentration and the type of the binder and its ratios to the CNT were investigated. Coatings based on water dispersions give higher adsorption, but solvent-based coatings enable achieving lower emittance. Interestingly, the binder was found to be responsible for the high emittance, yet, it is essential for obtaining good adhesion to the SS substrate. The best performance of the coatings requires adjusting the concentration of the CNTs and their ratio to the binder to obtain the highest absorptance with excellent adhesion; high absorptance is obtained at high CNT concentration, while good adhesion requires a minimum ratio between the binder/CNT; however, increasing the binder concentration increases the emissivity. The best coatings have an absorptance of ca. 90% with an emittance of ca. 0.3 and excellent adhesion to stainless steel.

Résumé :
Abstract: The tablet formulation contains binders that increase the interparticulate bond power inside the tablet. Research and progress of novel accessories remains a priority for potential use as a binder in formulations tablet. Tablet binder or binding agent are the substances that are added either dry or in liquid form during wet granulation to form granules or to promote cohesive compacts for directly compressed tablets. E.g., starch, pregelatinized starch, PEG, sorbitol, and HPMC, etc. Tablet Binder and disintegrants have the opposite used in an oral solid formulation. Binder delay tablet disintegration while disintegrant increase tablet disintegration. They play a vital role in making sure pellets or granules and tablets remain in shape until they reach their target by holding all ingredients (API and Excipients) together in any solid dosage form. Selecting the correct binder is critical to maintaining the integrity of the tablet. Natural binders such as various starches, Gums, mucus and dried fruits, among other things, have the ability to bind. Features such as Natural polymers, fillers, and disintegrants are also safe more economical than synthetic polymers

Résumé :
With the increasing traffic loading and changing climatic conditions, there is a need to use novel superior performing pavement materials such as high-modulus asphalt binders and asphalt mixtures to mitigate field distress such as rutting, cracking, etc. This laboratory study was thus conducted to explore and substantiate the usage of Rubber Polymer Composite Modifier (RPCM) for high-modulus asphalt binder modification. The base asphalt binder used in the study comprised A-70# Petroleum asphalt binder with RPCM dosages of 0.25%, 0.30%, 0.35%, 0.40% and 0.45%, separately. The laboratory tests conducted for characterizing the asphalt binder rheological and morphological properties included the dynamic mechanical analysis (DM), temperature-frequency sweep in the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) device, bending beam rheometer (BBR), and florescence microscopic (FM) imaging. The corresponding test results exhibited satisfactory compatibility and potential for using RPCM as a high-modulus asphalt binder modifier to enhance the base asphalt binder’s rheological properties, both with respect to high- and low-temperature performance improvements. For the A-70# Petroleum asphalt binder that was evaluated, the optimum RPCM dosage was found to be 0.30–0.35%. In comparison to styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS), asphalt binder modification with RPCM exhibited superior high-temperature rutting resistance properties (as measured in terms of the complex modulus and phase angle) and vice versa for the low-temperature cracking properties. Overall, the study beneficially contributes to the literature through provision of a reference datum toward the exploratory usage of RPCM for high-modulus asphalt binder modification and performance enhancements.
