Résumé :
AbstractIn this paper, an inexact Newton's method for nonlinear systems of equations is proposed. The method applies nonmonotone techniques and Newton's as well as inexact Newton's methods can be viewed as special cases of this new method. The method converges globally and quadratically. Some numerical experiments are reported for both standard test problems and an application in the computation of Hopf bifurcation points.

Résumé :
A goal of simultaneous shooting is to acquire high-quality seismic data more efficiently, while reducing operational costs and improving acquisition efficiency. Effective sampling and deblending techniques are essential to achieve this goal. Inspired by compressive sensing (CS), we have formulated deblending as an analysis-based sparse inversion problem. We solve the inversion problem with an algorithm derived from the classic alternating direction method (ADM), associated with variable splitting and nonmonotone line-search techniques. In our testing, the analysis-based formulation together with nonmonotone ADM algorithm provides improved performance compared with synthesis-based approaches. A major issue for all deblending approaches is how to deal with real-world variations in seismic data caused by static shifts and amplitude imbalances. We evaluate the concept of including static and amplitude corrections obtained from surface-consistent solutions into the deblending formulation. We implement solutions that use a multistage inversion scheme to overcome the practical issues embedded in the field-blended data, such as strong coherent noise, statics, and shot-amplitude variations. The combination of these techniques gives high-fidelity deblending results for marine and land data. We use two field-data examples acquired with simultaneous sources to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Imaging and amplitude variation with offset quantitative analysis are carried out to indicate the amplitude-preserving character of deblended data with this methodology.

Résumé :
Abstract Existence of two solutions to a parametric singular quasi-linear elliptic problem is proved. The equation is driven by the Φ \Phi -Laplacian operator, and the reaction term can be nonmonotone. The main tools employed are the local minimum theorem and the Mountain pass theorem, together with the truncation technique. Global C 1 , τ {C}^{1,\tau } regularity of solutions is also investigated, chiefly via a priori estimates and perturbation techniques.

Résumé :
In reliability studies, the best fitting of lifetime models leads to accurate estimates and predictions, especially when these models have nonmonotone hazard functions. For this purpose, the new Exponential-X Fréchet (NEXF) distribution that belongs to the new exponential-X (NEX) family of distributions is proposed to be a superior fitting model for some reliability models with nonmonotone hazard functions and beat the competitive distribution such as the exponential distribution and Frechet distribution with two and three parameters. So, we concentrated our effort to introduce a new novel model. Throughout this research, we have studied the properties of its statistical measures of the NEXF distribution. The process of parameter estimation has been studied under a complete sample and Type-I censoring scheme. The numerical simulation is detailed to asses the proposed techniques of estimation. Finally, a Type-I censoring real-life application on leukaemia patient’s survival with a new treatment has been studied to illustrate the estimation methods, which are well fitted by the NEXF distribution among all its competitors. We used for the fitting test the novel modified Kolmogorov–Smirnov (KS) algorithm for fitting Type-I censored data.

Résumé :
Abstract This paper extends on the first part of this series by describing four examples of 2D linear maps that can be constructed in accordance with the theory of the earlier work. The focus is again on spherical geometry, although these techniques can be readily extended to arbitrary manifolds. The four maps include conservative, consistent, and (optionally) monotone linear maps (i) between two finite-volume meshes, (ii) from finite-volume to finite-element meshes using a projection-type approach, (iii) from finite-volume to finite-element meshes using volumetric integration, and (iv) between two finite-element meshes. Arbitrary order of accuracy is supported for each of the described nonmonotone maps.

Résumé :
The focus of this thesis is the study and the application of nonmonotone strategies. These techniques are basically introduced to improve numerical results of existing optimization algorithms. Their first aim is that of relaxing the monotone requirement imposed by the globalization techniques. In fact, these monotone conditions might slow down the convergence rate of inher- ently nonmonotone optimization methods. This relaxation must not harm global convergence results. In this thesis we apply nonmonotone strategies to both line search and trust-region globalization techniques. We first considered Generalized Nash Equilibrium Problems (GNEPs) and their KKT reformulation into a highly nonlinear constrained smooth system of equations. In order to obtain global and fast local convergence, we take into account an existing trust-region method that is locally superlinear under an error bound condition only. A nonmonotone strategy has been applied, showing that the resulting algo- rithm performs significantly better than the original one. Global conver- gence properties have been proved for the new algorithm, while superlinear convergence is directly inherited from the existing method. The resulting algorithm is competitive with a standard software for nonlinear equations, not only on GNEPs, but also on quasi-variational inequalities. The second contribution of this thesis is the development of a framework for nonmonotone line search based decomposition methods. This is the first time in which nonmonotonicity is combined with decomposition methods for general constrained problems. Note that the choice of the direction and the line search are not fixed in advance, in fact the framework proves conver- gence for all those combinations of directions and line searches that are able to satisfy some mild assumptions. A specific realization of this abstract algo- rithm has been implemented in two versions, monotone and nonmonotone. The two algorithms have been compared on a set of network equilibrium problems. Also on this application, the nonmonotone version outperformed its monotone counterpart both on the total number of iterations and the function evaluations. In the end, a new family of nonmonotone techniques is proposed to build algorithms that are able to control the amount of nonmonotonicity intro- duced in each of the phases of the optimization procedure. This tool might be very helpful to understand in which combination of methods, problems and phases is more important to apply a nonmonotone strategy.

Résumé :
AbstractMethods of particles are now recognized as an effective tool for numerical modeling of dynamic mechanical and coupled processes in solids and liquids. This chapter is devoted to a brief review of recent advances in the development of the popular particle-based discrete element method (DEM). DEM is conventionally considered as a highly specialized technique for modeling the flow of granular media and the fracture of brittle materials at micro- and mesoscopic scales. However, in the last decade, great progress has been made in the development of the formalism of this method. It is largely associated with the works of the scientific group of Professor S. G. Psakhie. The most important achievement of this group is a generalized formulation of the method of homogeneously deformable discrete elements. In the chapter, we describe keystones of this implementation of DEM and a universal approach that allows one to apply various rheological models of materials (including coupled models of porous fluid-saturated solids) to a discrete element. The new formalism makes possible qualitative expansion of the scope of application of the particle-based discrete element technique to materials with various rheological properties and to the range of considered scales form microscopic to macroscopic. The capabilities of this method are especially in demand in the study of the features of contact interaction of materials. To demonstrate these capabilities, we briefly review two recent applications concerning (a) the effect of adhesive interaction on the regime of wear of surface asperities under tangential contact of bodies and (b) the nonmonotonic dependence of the stress concentration in the neck of the human femur on the dynamics of hip joint contact loading.

Résumé :
Nowadays increased interest is shown in ZrN coatings, which have high erosion resistance, strength in combination with a fairly high hardness. Among the various ion-plasma techniques, vacuum-arc is one of the most versa-tile processes due to the high degree of ionization of the flow of film-forming particles and good adhesion properties of coatings to the substrate. The purpose of the paper is problem of structural engineering of vacuum-arc ZrN coatings is acute in order to predictably obtain the necessary functional physical and mechanical characteristics. Methodology. The study of the structure and phase composition of research samples of ZrN coatings was carried out by methods of optical, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis. The elemental composition was determined using the X-ray fluorescence method and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Mechanical tests of materials were performed in the mode of microindentation, in particular – active loading, using the Berkovich pyramid (installation according to ISO 14577). Results. It is established that the formation of the bitexture state with the axes [111] + [311] occurs under the action of the impulse bias potential (Ui) -800 V, even at the lowest constant bias potential (Uc) -27 V. In ZrN coatings at high values of Uc = -200 V, in the whole range of pulse potentials, is the formation of the texture with the axis [111]. The change in substructural characteristics is nonmonotonic. Growth is observed. A generalized diagram of the axial texture axis is constructed, with the help of which it is possible to choose those deposition conditions that will provide coatings with a given set of properties. Proposed the integral parameter PU = pN (Uc + τ ∙ f ∙ Ui) for the analysis of the obtained data. Practical implications. Based on the proposed physical concepts, the conditions for obtaining ion-plasma vacuum-arc coatings ZrN, which affect the structure, substructure and mechanical properties, have been developed. Value/originality. Physical mechanisms in the formation of the ZrN phase, when radiation damage occurs and at the same time the process of relaxation of structural defects, which are realized under the action of heat fluxes. Depending on the intensity and duty cycle of high-energy impact, the corresponding axial textures, internal stresses, and, as a consequence, a change in functional properties are formed.

Résumé :
Answer Set Programming (ASP) is a well-known problem solving approach based on nonmonotonic reasoning. HEX-programs extend ASP with external atoms for access to arbitrary external sources, which can also introduce constants that do not appear in the program (value invention). In order to determine the relevant constants during (pre-)grounding, external atoms must in general be evaluated under up to exponentially many possible inputs. While program splitting techniques allow for eliminating exhaustive pre-grounding, they prohibit effective conflict-driven solving. Thus, current techniques suffer either a grounding or a solving bottleneck. In this work we introduce a new technique for conflict-driven learning over multiple program components. To this end, we identify reasons for inconsistency of program components wrt. input from predecessor components and propagate them back. Experiments show a significant, potentially exponential speedup.

Résumé :
Abstraction is a powerful technique that has not been considered much for nonmonotonic reasoning formalisms including Answer Set Programming (ASP), apart from related simplification methods. We introduce a notion for abstracting from the domain of an ASP program that shrinks the domain size and over-approximates the set of answer sets, as well as an abstraction-&-refinement methodology that, starting from an initial abstraction, automatically yields an abstraction with an associated answer set matching an answer set of the original program if one exists. Experiments reveal the potential of the approach, by its ability to focus on the program parts that cause unsatisfiability and by achieving concrete abstract answer sets that merely reflect relevant details.

Résumé :
Convection heat transfer in upward flows of supercritical water in triangular tight fuel rod bundles is numerically investigated by using the commercial CFD code, ANSYS Fluent© 14.5. The fuel rod with an inner diameter of 7.6 mm and the pitch-to-diameter ratio (P/D) of 1.14 is studied for mass flux ranging between 550 and 1050 kg/m2s and heat flux of 560 kW/m2 at pressures of 25 MPa. V2F eddy viscosity turbulence model is used and, to isolate the effect of buoyancy, constant values are used for thermo-physical properties with Boussinesq approximation for the density variation with temperature in the momentum equations. The computed Nusselt number normalized by that of the same Reynolds number with no buoyancy against the buoyancy parameter proposed by Jackson and Hall’s criterion. Mentioned results are compared with V2F turbulence model whereas strong nonmonotonic variation of the thermo-physical properties as function of temperature have been applied to the commercial CFD code using user defined function (UDF) technique. A significant decrease in Nusselt number was observed in the range of 10-6<Grq/Reb3.425Prb0.8<5×10-6 before entering a serious heat transfer deterioration regime. Based on an analysis of the shear-stress distribution in the turbulent boundary layer and the significant variation of the specific heat across the turbulent boundary layer, it is found that the same mechanism that leads to impairment of turbulence production in concentric annular pipes is present in triangular lattice fuel rod bundles at supercritical pressure.
