Résumé :
Abstract In linear optical processes, compact and effective wavefront shaping techniques have been developed with the artificially engineered materials and devices in the past decades. Recently, wavefront shaping of light at newly generated frequencies was also demonstrated using nonlinear photonic crystals and metasurfaces. However, the nonlinear wave-shaping devices with both high nonlinear optical efficiency and high wave shaping efficiency are difficult to realize. To circumvent this constraint, we propose the idea of metasurface decorated optical crystal to take the best aspects of both traditional nonlinear crystals and photonic metasurfaces. In the proof-of-concept experiment, we show that a silicon nitride metasurface decorated quartz crystal can be used for the wavefront shaping of the second harmonic waves generated in quartz. With this crystal-metasurface hybrid platform, the nonlinear vortex beam generation and nonlinear holography were successfully demonstrated. The proposed methodology may have important applications in nonlinear structured light generation, super-resolution imaging, and optical information processing, etc.

Résumé :
Modifying optical properties of crystal is very fundamental need for designing various photonic devices, hence in the current investigation, the L-proline (LP) has been firstly doped in cadmium thiourea acetate (CTA) crystal with the aim to optimize the UV–Visible, second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency, luminescence and third-order nonlinear optical (TONLO) properties of CTA crystal. The pure and doped CTA crystals have been grown by slow solvent evaporation technique at [Formula: see text]C. The structural parameters of grown crystals have been determined using the single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. The incorporation of LP in CTA crystal matrix has been confirmed by Fourier transforms infrared analysis. The UV–Visible studies have been employed within the wavelength range of 200–900 nm to explore the enhancing impact of LP on CTA crystal. The LP doped CTA crystals were subjected to Kurtz–Perry test and Z-scan analysis to identify the nonlinear nature of studied crystals. The SHG efficiency of LP-CTA crystal shows significant increase owing to enhanced charge transfer over the organic ligand of LP. The laser-induced TONLO properties of LP-doped CTA crystal have been determined at 632.8 nm. The nature of nonlinear refraction and absorption has been explored by close and open aperture Z-scan configuration. The magnitude of nonlinear refraction [Formula: see text], absorption coefficient [Formula: see text], cubic susceptibility [Formula: see text] and figure of merit has been determined using the transmittance data. The color-centered luminescence studies have been carried out which established the prominent redshift in peak maxima of emission wavelength of CTA crystal due to doping of LP. Comparative analysis of pure and doped crystal confirmed the dominance of LP doping.

Résumé :
Solitons are nonlinear waves that remain invariant as they propagate. Precise control of dispersion and nonlinear effects govern soliton propagation. In recent years Photonic crystals (PhCs) have attracted a great deal of attention due to the facility to engineer and enhance both their nonlinear and dispersive effects. In this article we show soliton pulse analysis in GaInP Photonic Crystal Waveguides using AUTO bifurcation analysis tool. We have demonstrated pulse compression at moderately slow velocities in GaInP Photonic Crystal Waveguides. This is enabled by the enhanced self phase modulation and strong negative group velocity dispersion in the Photonic Crystal Waveguides.

Résumé :
The thermo-physical properties of the nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal K3B6O10Br (KBB) were experimentally investigated, including specific heat, thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion and refractive index. The specific heat of KBB is lower than that of LiB3O5 and higher than that of other borate NLO crystals, such as β-BaB2O4, CsLiB6O10 and CsB3O5, and KBB manifests a high damage threshold because of its lower temperature gradient during laser pulse irradiation. The thermal expansion coefficients were obtained as α x = 5.09 × 10−6 K−1 and α z = 2.39 × 10−5 K−1, showing weaker anisotropy than those of commonly used NLO crystals. The temperature-dependent Sellmeier dispersion equations of the refractive indices were also obtained, and the phase-matching angles for second harmonic generation (SHG) at temperatures of 313, 343, 373, 403 and 433 K which were calculated from these equations are in good agreement with the experimental values. All results are indicative of the KBB crystal as a novel promising NLO crystal for high power SHG.

Résumé :
In the present work, metal (Cu2+)-substituted ninhydrin single crystals were grown by slow evaporation method. The grown crystals have been subjected to single crystal XRD, powder X-ray diffraction, FTIR, dielectric and SHG studies. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the compound crystallizes in monoclinic system with noncentrosymmetric space group P21 with lattice parametersa=11.28 Å,b=5.98 Å,c=5.71 Å,α=90∘,β=98.57,γ=90∘, andV=381 (Å)3, which agrees very well with the reported value. The sharp and strong peaks in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern confirm the good crystallinity of the grown crystals. The presence of dopants marginally altered the lattice parameters without affecting the basic structure of the crystal. The UV-Vis transmittance spectrum shows that the crystal has a good optical transmittance in the entire visible region with lower cutoff wavelength 314 nm. The vibrational frequencies of various functional groups in the crystals have been derived from FT-IR analysis. Based on the shifts in the vibrations, the presence of copper in the lattice of the grown crystal is clearly established from the pure ninhydrin crystals. Both dielectric constant and dielectric loss decrease with the increase in frequency. The second harmonic generation efficiency was measured by employing powder Kurtz method.

Résumé :
This review will examine the origins of nonlinear light scattering processes in nematic liquid crystals, and explore various nonlinear photonic processes associated with optically induced director axis reorientation effects. Our theoretical prediction shows that the upper limit of nematic liquid crystal reorientation nonlinearity can be as high as 1000 cm2/W. The supra-nonlinear responses of nematic liquid crystals enable various self-action or electro-optical guiding, mixing, switching and modulation of light with unprecedented low power thresholds. Owing to the broadband birefringence of NLC, we expect to realize optical elements/devices capable of similar multi-functional operations throughout the visible — infrared regime. We also discuss the optical limiting action of isotropic-phase liquid crystal filled nonlinear fiber arrays.

Résumé :
Inverted nonlinear photonic crystals are the crystals featuring competition between linear and nonlinear lattices, with minima of the linear potential coinciding with maxima of the nonlinear pseudopotential, and vice versa. Traditional inverted nonlinear photonic crystals only have two channels, and can be attained experimentally by means of Rhodamine B (RhB, a dye featuring saturable absorption) doped into the SU-8 polymer. In this paper, a new type of inverted nonlinear photonic crystal is constructed by juxtaposing three kinds of channels into a period. These three channels are a purely linear channel, a saturable self-focusing nonlinear channel, and a saturable self-defocusing nonlinear channel. This optical device is assumed to be fabricated by means of SU-8 polymer material periodically doped with two types of active dyes. The nonlinear propagation of a light field inside this device (passing along the channel) can be described by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Stable multi-peak fundamental and dipole solitons are found in the first gap of the system. These solitons sufficiently exhibit some interesting digital properties, which may have potential in optical communications.

Résumé :
Abstract In order to explore the application of third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials in complex borate crystalline chemical reactions, the laser light source with limited wavelength range can be extended to ultraviolet (UV) and deep UV region by using NLO crystal materials and frequency conversion technology, which has become a hot research direction of deep UV light source. The experimental results show that the UV cutoff edge of the grown KLi(HC3N3O3)·2H2O crystal is 237 nm. The refractive index of the crystal was measured by prism coupling technique, and the Sellmeier equation of the refractive index of the crystal was fitted. The chemical bond of the crystal is a fundamental means to understand the relationship between structure and properties. With the emergence of a large number of hybrid functional crystals, the composition and structure of crystals become more complex, and the chemical bond theory has also been greatly developed, and then the chemical bond theory of meta crystals or complex crystals has emerged. Once proposed, the theory has been widely used, such as analyzing the eligibility of luminescent crystals, NLO crystals and high-temperature superconductor crystals. NLO materials are the dominant field of China in the world. Crystals with good nonlinear behavior have more complex crystal structures, due to the theory of amorphous structure, the exploration of this aspect is particularly difficult. For the first time, the influence of the composition of rare earth-doped bismuth borate glass on the crystal precipitation and glass microstructure of NLO materials was systematically studied, which laid a theoretical foundation for further development and understanding of new bismuth borate optical systems.

Résumé :
Organic non-linear optical Benzimidazolium salicylate (BISA) single crystals have been harvested from methanol solution by slow evaporation method. The grown crystals belong to the monoclinic crystal system with space group P21/c. Good crystalline nature of grown BISA crystal was confirmed by PXRD. The FTIR spectrum analysis affirms the presence of functional groups in BISA crystal. From the UV‒Vis-Absorption spectrum, the lower cut-off wavelength (356 nm) and its energy band gap and linear refractive index were calculated. Luminescence spectrum was recorded to explore the emission peak at 426 nm. The mechanical strength of BISA crystal was determined by Vickers microhardness tester and mechanical parameters like C11, Hk, Kc, and Bi were calculated for the first time. Dielectric properties of grown crystals were systematically investigated for different temperatures. Further, electronic polarizability (α) were calculated using Penn analysis and Clausius‒Mossotti equation. Z‒scan measurement was taken to explore the third-order NLO properties of BISA crystal. For the first attempt, the BISA crystals were tested against five human pathogenic bacterial, i.e. Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella flexneri, Vibrio cholerae, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Existing results established that Benzimidazolium salicylate crystals might find useful applications in nonlinear optics and antimicrobial field.

Résumé :
Liquid crystals have effective nonlinear optical coefficients that are orders of magnitude larger than other materials exploited in integrated optics. The addition of some organic dyes in small amounts may further enhance the nonlinear optical response and even change its sign. We used a dye-nematic liquid crystal mixture exhibiting a negative optical nonlinearity. We observed the nonlinear spatial splitting of the guided modes in a symmetric planar waveguide whose core was the liquid crystal mixture. This non-linear effect has been observed with very low laser power input and the power threshold dependence on dye concentration and core thickness was investigated.

Résumé :
Allylthiourea complex crystals is an organometallic complex, a new nonlinear optical materials with high second harmonic generation effect. Tri-allylthiourea cadmium chloride and Tri-allylthiourea cadmium bromide are the promising nonlinear optical crystals belonging to this family. Both the crystals have been grown from an aqueous solution by slow cooling technique. The solubility and growth optimization of the grown crystals in terms of pH were analyzed and the influence of the different halogen atoms on the properties of as grown single crystals was studied by conducting various characterization techniques. Powder X-ray diffraction studies revealed that both the crystals are trigonal crystal structure with R3C space group. The spectroscopic properties were investigated by recording the Fourier Transform Infra Red and UV-Visible-NIR spectroscopy. Spectrocopic study confirmed the coordination of metal and red shift of the grown crystal. Nonlinear behavior of the as grown crystals was identified by Kurtz powder technique. Thermal and electrical properties of the as grown crystals were also analyzed by thermogravimetric and dielectric studies. Influence of the halogens on the growth as well as the properties were studied.

Résumé :
The types of nonlinear surface waves of extraordinary polarization that occur at the interface between a photorefractive crystal and a medium with positive Kerr nonlinearity are described. It is shown that nonlinear surface waves of an asymmetric profile of two types can exist in such a system. The waves of the first type decay when moving away from the interface without oscillations both in the depth of the photorefractive crystal and in the Kerr crystal, and the waves of the second type decay in the depth of the photorefractive crystal with oscillations. Dispersion relations are obtained, and the conditions for the existence of all the described types of waves are indicated depending on the optical characteristics of the crystals.

Résumé :
The aim of this paper is to develop a theory for the growth of multiple crystals in a polymer melt. This leads to nonlinear moving boundary problems for the temperature, with normal growth speed of the crystal boundaries determined by a nonlinear Gibbs-Thompson relation. Particular attention is paid to the effect of impingement, i.e., the event of two crystals hitting each other, which stops the growth on the contact interface. In one space dimension, the well-posedness of the growth model coupled to the heat equation is shown for an arbitrary number of crystals, both in a quasi-stationary and in an instationary situation. The resulting evolution of a fixed crystal in presence of other crystals is compared to the pure single crystal case. Finally, some basic features of the model in higher spatial dimensions and the main problems encountered in the attempt to prove a general well-posedness result are discussed.

Résumé :
The depth of field (DoF) was extended 2.8-fold to achieve rapid crystal screening by retrofitting a custom-designed micro-retarder array (µRA) in the optical beam path of a nonlinear optical microscope. The merits of the proposed strategy for DoF enhancement were assessed in applications of second-harmonic generation imaging of protein crystals. It was found that DoF extension increased the number of crystals detected while simultaneously reducing the number of `z-slices' required for screening. Experimental measurements of the wavelength-dependence of the extended DoF were in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. These results provide a simple and broadly applicable approach to increase the throughput of existing nonlinear optical imaging methods for protein crystal screening.

Résumé :
Single crystals of potassium hydrogen phthalate (KAP) are grown by solution growth technique. Linear optical constants are evaluated from UV/VIS/NIR spectrum. The Z scan technique is used to elucidate the third order nonlinearity in the material. The results indicate that the compound exhibits reverse saturable absorption (RSA) and self-defocusing performance. The second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of the crystal evaluated by Kurtz and Perry technique is compared with that of the standard KDP crystal. Attempt is made to correlate the SHG efficiency with the crystalline perfection in the material. Résumé :
The ZnGeP2 crystal is a material of choice for powerful mid-IR optical parametric oscillators and amplifiers. In this paper, we present the experimental analysis of the optical damage threshold of ZnGeP2 nonlinear crystals induced by a repetitively-pulsed Ho3+:YAG laser at 2091 nm. Two types of ZnGeP2 crystals grown under different conditions were examined using the laser and holographic techniques. The laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) determined by the pulse fluence or peak intensity was studied as a function of the pulse repetition rate (PRR) and laser exposure duration. The main crystal structure factor for a higher LIDT was found to be a reduced dislocation density of crystal lattice. The ZnGeP2 nonlinear crystals characterized by the high structural perfection with low density of dislocations and free from twinning and stacking faults were measured to have a 3.5 J/cm2 pulse fluence damage threshold and 10.5 MW/cm2 peak intensity damage threshold at 12 kHz PRR; at 40 kHz PRR the pulse fluence damage threshold increased to over 6 J/cm2, but the peak intensity damage threshold dropped to 5.5 MW/cm2.

Résumé :
A novel semiorganic nonlinear optical crystal bis (L-glutamine) potassium nitrate (BGPN) grown by slow evaporation technique at ambient temperature. The grown crystal surface has been analyzed by chemical etching and atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies. Amplitude parameters like area roughness, roughness average, valley height, valley depth, peak height, and peak valley height were measured successfully from AFM studies. Etching studies were carried out by various solvents like water, methanol and ethanol. The etching study indicates the occurrence of different types of etch pit patterns like striations and steplike pattern. The laser damage threshold energy has been measured by irradiating laser beam using a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser (1064 nm). Second harmonic generation (SHG) studies have been performed by famous Kurtz powder technique with reference to standard potassium dihydrogen phosphate single crystals (KDP). It is found from this technique that SHG efficiency of BGPN is in comparison to that of standard KDP crystals.

The aim of this research was to synthesize and characterize pure and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) doped L–alanine cadmium chloride (LACC) single crystals. Pure and MgCl2 doped LACC single crystals were synthesized by solution method with slow evaporation solution growth technique at room temperature. The single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of pure, 1 and 2 mol% MgCl2 doped LACC single crystals revealed monoclinic crystal structure with C2 space group. The optical properties of pure and MgCl2 doped LACC single crystals investigated by UV–VIS/NIR spectrometer confirmed that the crystals were transparent in the wavelength range of 230-1100 nm. The optical band gap energy of pure and doped LACC single crystals were found to have the same value of 5.4 eV. The energy-dispersive X-ray analysis indicated the incorporation of magnesium and chlorine atoms in LACC single crystal. The second harmonic generation efficiency of 1 and 2 mol% MgCl2 doped LACC crystals were analyzed by Kurtz-Perry powder technique and found to be 1.75 and 2 times greater than that of the standard potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystal, respectively.

Résumé :
Nematic liquid crystal (NLC) is a material that features a large nonlinear optical response. The nonlinearity can be enhanced by doping a dye agent into a NLC host. In this paper, we review the nonlinear phenomena recently observed for dye-doped liquid crystal (DDLC) films measured using the Z-scan technique, which is a simple, yet powerful method for measuring nonlinear refractive indices (optical Kerr constant) n2 and nonlinear absorption coefficients β. The nonlinear effects of liquid crystals (LCs) include the electronic polarization effect, electrostriction effect, thermal effect and reorientation effect. When LCs are doped with dye agents, the dye-induced orientational effect, photoisomerization effect, and light-induced thermal effect come about to enhance LC nonlinearity. The dominant effect depends strongly upon the spatial, temporal and polarization properties of the excitation laser beam. Generally speaking, the nonlinear effects resulted from the electronic polarization and photoisomerization effects arise from a laser pulse on picosecond duration scale, while electrostriction, thermal and reorientation effects occur on nanosecond ~ microsecond, nanosecond ~ millisecond and millisecond ~ second duration scales, respectively. In this paper, the causation of nonlinear refractive index n2 into various different experimental conditions is summarized, including the changes of the external electric field, external optical field, polarization of pump beam, temperature and the use of deuterated materials. The mechanisms, which influence the nonlinear effect in dye-doped liquid crystal films, are also discussed.
