Résumé :
Massive device-to-device communication nodes and Internet of Things (IoT) devices are expected to be crucial components in next-generation wireless networks. However, the energy constraint of these nodes presents a challenge since the energy of the batteries is limited. Motivated by this, radio frequency energy harvesting (EH) has been developed as an efficient strategy to overcome the energy constraint of IoT devices and sensor networks. In this paper, a wireless-powered dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying system, in the absence of a direct link between the source (S) and the destination (D), is considered. It is assumed that a dedicated power beacon (PB) transmits an energy-bearing signal from which the power-constrained S and relay (R) harvest energy. Theoretical derivations of bit error probability, outage probability, and throughput expressions are performed for both linear and non-linear energy harvesting models. Moreover, the theoretical results provided for different system parameters are validated via Monte Carlo simulations. The obtained results reveal the difference between the realistic non-linear EH model and the conventional linear EH model, which overestimates the system performance at high levels of harvested energy. Thus, it leads to misunderstanding the real performance of the EH systems. However, at low levels of harvested energy, both models behave similarly and provide realistic results.

Résumé :
Nonlinear energy harvesting devices in the form of stiffness nonlinearity have emerged as among the effective solutions to overcome the performance limit of linear energy harvesting devices. However, up to now, researches on the nonlinear devices are only focusing on the ability to widen the bandwidth while the limit of employing linear transduction coefficient in a nonlinear system has yet to be heavily discussed. This paper investigates on the transduction coefficient for both linear and nonlinear systems of an electromagnetic energy harvesting device as a function of the excitation frequency. It is proven that the transduction coefficient of the nonlinear device is larger than its equivalent linear device, especially in the multi-stable solutions region. In common practice, the nonlinearity in the nonlinear system is considered weak, and its transduction coefficient is assumed to converge to the one produced by the linear system. The limits to which the transduction coefficient of a linear system can be employed on the nonlinear system were drawn based on the experimental analysis conducted on the proposed device. The device was designed to perform as a linear or nonlinear system, where the degree of nonlinearity was changed by varying the gap between the magnets. The limit of the transduction coefficient was determined from the analysis of the harmonic ratio. The results show that the linear transduction coefficient is valid to be employed to the nonlinear system when the harmonic ratio is less than five per cent at the multi-stable solutions region.

In order to overcome shortcomings of traditional hydraulic control valve, the variable non-linear flow channel method and device is proposed, which can make magneto-rheological fluid channel in the magnetic gap space variable non-linear. In the magnetic gap space setting separated magnetic pressure tablets make magneto-rheological fluid non-line fluid along the separated magnetic pressure tablets, so the magneto-rheological fluid channel length is lengthen and it can increase the utilization of a limited magnetic line. Under the condition of magnetic gap size fixedness, improving pressure difference size of controllable fluid of magnetic fluids can achieve goals of energy conservation and reducing the size of magneto-rheological valves.

Résumé :
Ambient light is an energy-harvesting source that can recharge a battery with less human interaction and can be used to prolong the operational time of the Internet of Things, e.g., mobile phones and wearable devices. Available light energy is insufficient for directly charging mobile phones and wearable devices, but it can supplement batteries to power some low-energy-consuming critical functions of the wearable device, especially in low-power consumption wearables. However, in an emergency scenario when the battery’s operational time is not sufficient or a battery charging source is unavailable, a solution is required to extend the limited battery span for mobile and wearable devices. This work presents the bottlenecks and new advancements in the commercialization of photovoltaics for smartphones and wearable technologies based on ambient light energy harvesting. A new technique, in which a smartphone cover is used as a solar concentrator to enhance light energy harvesting associated with algorithms, is experimentally demonstrated. Our research outcomes show that solar concentrators can improve light intensity by approximately 1.85 and 1.43 times at 90° and 71° angles, respectively, thus harvesting more ambient light energy at 2500 lx light intensity in a typical office environment. Type-1 PV and Type-2 PV cells were able to charge the additional battery in 8 h under 2500 lx lighting intensity in an indoor office environment. A system and logic algorithm technique is presented to efficiently transfer harvested light energy to perform low-energy consumption operations in a device, in order to improve the operational time of the device’s battery.

Résumé :
A method to analyze the non-linear-inertial properties of devices for recording (analog-to-digital conversion) of signals is considered. The method includes a building of a model of a digitizing device in the form of a nonlinear recursive filter of a limited order (second or third). Two or four non-linear functions in such a model are proposed to be considered as characteristics of the non- linearity of the device. The influence of these characteristics on different parts of the transient response of the device is indicated. For the selected example (digital oscilloscope), it is shown that the nonlinearity of the oscilloscope quantizing unit itself has an unsystematic character, but is small against the background of relatively smooth distortions in the analog path of the oscilloscope.

Résumé :
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a method to reduce the non-linear distortion of a transistor to its input and output ports to aid distortion contribution analysis (DCA). This is especially needed when the internal structure of a device model is complex. Design/methodology/approach – The non-linear distortion generated by all non-linear sources inside a device model are reduced to transistor i/o ports by LMSE fitting techniques. Simulations of an LDMOS power transistor are used to compare the reduced distortion results with the actual non-linear sources. Findings – It is shown, that device models where the current sources are split by intermediate nodes cause superficial results, when distortion contributions are calculated as a superposition of contributions from individual non-linear sources. The proposed iterative fitting technique works. Research limitations/implications – Some non-quasistatic effects and the transfer functions from external terminals to internal controlling nodes are not covered. Practical implications – The analysis is a step toward a generic non-linear distortion contribution simulation tool that would aid the designers to develop more linear analog circuits. Originality/value – The concept of DCA itself is fairly new. This paper makes a step to represent the distortion sources in a canonical way.

Résumé :
This paper presents a detailed analytical study of Gunn, SCR, and p-n junction and of the physical processes that occur inside. Based on the properties of these devices, models for Gunn, SCR, and p-n junction diode have been developed. The results of computer simulated examples have been presented in each case. The non-linear lumped model for Gunn is a unified model as it describes the diffusion effects as the-domain traves from cathode to anode. An additional feature of this model is that it describes the domain extinction and nucleation phenomena in Gunn dioder with the help of a simple timing circuit. The non-linear lumped model for SCR is general and is valid under any mode of operation in any circuit environment. The memristive circuit model for p-n junction diodes is capable of simulating realistically the diode’s dynamic behavior under reverse, forward and sinusiodal operating modes. The model uses memristor, the charge-controlled resistor to mimic various second-order effects due to conductivity modulation. It is found that both storage time and fall time of the diode can be accurately predicted.

Résumé :
The research trend for harvesting energy from the ambient vibration sources has moved from using a linear resonant generator to a non-linear generator in order to improve on the performance of a linear generator; for example, the relatively small bandwidth, intolerance to mistune and the suitability of the device for low-frequency applications. This article presents experimental results to illustrate the dynamic behaviour of a dual-mode non-linear energy-harvesting device operating in hardening and bi-stable modes under harmonic excitation. The device is able to change from one mode to another by altering the negative magnetic stiffness by adjusting the separation gap between the magnets and the iron core. Results for the device operating in both modes are presented. They show that there is a larger bandwidth for the device operating in the hardening mode compared to the equivalent linear device. However, the maximum power transfer theory is less applicable for the hardening mode due to occurrence of the maximum power at different frequencies, which depends on the non-linearity and the damping in the system. The results for the bi-stable mode show that the device is insensitive to a range of excitation frequencies depending upon the input level, damping and non-linearity.

Résumé :
In this paper, we propose a novel concept of a harvester-absorber system. The idea is based on usage of the dynamic absorber for energy harvesting. The device consists of three elements: a main system (damped body), a pendulum (tuned mass absorber) and an electromagnetic harvester. The ultimate goal of this investigation is to achieve simultaneous mitigation of vibrations and energy harvesting. We show the dynamics of the system and ranges of parameters where we observe good damping properties and high energy recovery. Additionally, an optimization of the harvester device parameters has been performed.

Résumé :
Emerging resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) has demonstrated great potential in the achievement of the in-memory computing paradigm to overcome the well-known “memory wall” in current von Neumann architecture. The ReRAM crossbar array (RCA) is a promising circuit structure to accelerate the vital multiplication-and-accumulation (MAC) operations in deep neural networks (DNN). However, due to the nonlinear distribution of conductance levels in ReRAM, a large deviation exists in the mapping process when the trained weights that are quantized by linear relationships are directly mapped to the nonlinear conductance values from the realistic ReRAM device. This deviation degrades the inference accuracy of the RCA-based DNN. In this paper, we propose a minimum error substitution based on a conductance-aware quantization method to eliminate the deviation in the mapping process from the weights to the actual conductance values. The method is suitable for multiple ReRAM devices with different non-linear conductance distribution and is also immune to the device variation. The simulation results on LeNet5, AlexNet and VGG16 demonstrate that this method can vastly rescue the accuracy degradation from the non-linear resistance distribution of ReRAM devices compared to the linear quantization method.

Résumé :
Synaptic devices with bipolar analog resistive switching behavior are the building blocks for memristor-based neuromorphic computing. In this work, a fully complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible, forming-free, and non-filamentary memristive device (Pd/Al2O3/TaOx/Ta) with bipolar analog switching behavior is reported as an artificial synapse for neuromorphic computing. Synaptic functions, including long-term potentiation/depression, paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), and spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP), are implemented based on this device; the switching energy is around 50 pJ per spike. Furthermore, for applications in artificial neural networks (ANN), determined target conductance states with little deviation (<1%) can be obtained with random initial states. However, the device shows non-linear conductance change characteristics, and a nearly linear conductance change behavior is obtained by optimizing the training scheme. Based on these results, the device is a promising emulator for biology synapses, which could be of great benefit to memristor-based neuromorphic computing.

Résumé :
This article formulated, simulated and evaluated an enhanced model for a non-linear/non-Gaussian integrated Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Navigation System (INS) mobile-based device navigation system using the Particle Filter (PF). This was with a view to enhancing the accuracy and minimize the delay experienced in the existing system which relies on linear data. An android driven Infinix X5 mobile device with GPS and INS-based sensors was used to implement the model formulated, standard Bayesian estimators were used to generate non-linear datasets with Gaussian/non-Gaussian white noises for mobile device based INS/GPS sensors. A mathematical model was formulated using Sampling Importance-weight Resampling (SIR) algorithm of the PF. The conceptual model was developed using Simulink and the design specification was done using Unified Modeling Language (UML). The model was simulated with MATLAB and the simulation results obtained were evaluated using standard metrics, and benchmarked with existing model. The overall results showed that the proposed model performed better than existing ones in term of accuracy. However, the model did not impact on delay reduction.

Résumé :
Aluminium Plate Shear Walls (APSWs) are innovative systems able to confer to either new or existing structures a significant capacity to resist earthquake and wind loads. Many tests have shown that these devices may exhibit high strength, initial stiffness and ductility, as well as an excellent ability to dissipate energy. When full APSWs are used as bracing device of buildings, they may induce excessive stresses in the surrounding main structure where they are inserted, so to require the adoption of large cross-section profiles. For this reason, perforated panels, which are weakened by holes aiming at limiting the actions transmitted to the surrounding frame members, represent a valid alternative to full panels. In this work, aiming at showing the advantages of such devices, a FEM model of perforated panels has been calibrated on the basis of recent experimental tests. Subsequently, a parametric FEM analysis on different series of aluminium perforated panels, by changing the number and diameter of the holes, as well as the plate thickness, has been carried out with the aim to individuate the maximum shear strength offered by such devices with different opening percentages.

Résumé :
Introduction Smartphone-compatible blood pressure devices may be a good alternative to enable self-measurement of blood pressure by patients. Furthermore, automatic transferral of data to the hospital allows for remote monitoring. To our knowledge, no study has compared four of these smartphone-compatible blood pressure devices. Methods Patients who were followed up for acute myocardial infarction were asked to participate during their outpatient clinic visit. After five minutes of rest, six blood pressure devices were applied. The order was randomised. Four devices were smartphone-compatible. One device was an automated oscillometric device. One device was a handheld aneroid sphygmomanometer (reference device). All measurements were compared using a linear mixed model. Results A total of 43 patients (62.7 ± 11.3 years, 79% male) were included. Compared to the reference device, four blood pressure monitors yielded a significant higher mean systolic blood pressure and four monitors yielded a significant higher diastolic BP. One device yielded a non-significant lower mean systolic blood pressure and one device yielded a non-significant higher mean diastolic blood pressure. Except for one blood pressure device, all mean differences were smaller than 5 mmHg. Conclusion In this study, average inter-device variability was shown to be statistically significant, however four devices remained within the predefined range of 5 mmHg for both systolic and diastolic blood pressures.

Résumé :
In this paper we evaluate several well-known and widely used machine learning algorithms for regression in the energy disaggregation task. Specifically, the Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring approach was considered and the K-Nearest-Neighbours, Support Vector Machines, Deep Neural Networks and Random Forest algorithms were evaluated across five datasets using seven different sets of statistical and electrical features. The experimental results demonstrated the importance of selecting both appropriate features and regression algorithms. Analysis on device level showed that linear devices can be disaggregated using statistical features, while for non-linear devices the use of electrical features significantly improves the disaggregation accuracy, as non-linear appliances have non-sinusoidal current draw and thus cannot be well parametrized only by their active power consumption. The best performance in terms of energy disaggregation accuracy was achieved by the Random Forest regression algorithm.

Résumé :
GPS has become an attractive feature for geolocalization enabling asset tracking IoT devices. GPS satellite antennas radiate RHCP (right-hand circularly polarized) electromagnetic waves; thus, the typical antenna at the receiver is also RHCP. However, when the orientation of the receiving device is random, linear polarization antennas operate better in terms of TTFF (time to first fix). Through field measurements (urban and field) and considering different positions of the device in a vehicle, an RHCP microstrip patch antenna and a linear non-resonant antenna element called an antenna booster were compared. TTFF averaged for several positions was 7 s better for the linearly polarized antenna booster than for the microstrip RHCP patch antenna. The results demonstrate that the behavior of the linear polarization antenna booster technology is more robust in terms of TTFF to the arbitrary position of the IoT device while keeping a small size and simplicity.sdf

Résumé :
We presented an explicit empirical model of the thermal resistance of AlGaN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistors on three distinct substrates, including sapphire, SiC, and Si. This model considered both a linear and non-linear thermal resistance model of AlGaN/GaN HEMT, the thickness of the host substrate layers, and the gate length and width. The non-linear nature of channel temperature—visible at the high-power dissipation stage—along with linear dependency, was constructed within a single equation. Comparisons with the channel temperature measurement procedure (DC) and charge-control-based device modeling were performed to verify the model’s validity, and the results were in favorable agreement with the observed model data, with only a 1.5% error rate compared to the measurement data. An agile expression for the channel temperature is also important for designing power devices and monolithic microwave integrated circuits. The suggested approach provides several techniques for investigation that could otherwise be impractical or unattainable when utilizing time-consuming numerical simulations.

Résumé :
Linear energy harvesters can only produce useful amounts of power when excited close to their natural frequency. Due to the uncertain nature of ambient vibrations, it has been hypothesised that such devices will perform poorly in real-world applications. To improve performance, it has been suggested that the introduction of non-linearities into such devices may extend the bandwidth over which they perform effectively. In this study, a magnetic levitation device with non-linearities similar to the Duffing oscillator is considered. The governing equations of the device are formed in which the effects of friction are considered. Analytical solutions are used to explore the effect that friction can have on the system when it is under harmonic excitations. Following this, a numerical model is formed. A differential evolution algorithm is used alongside experimental data to identify the relevant parameters of the device. The model is then validated using experimental data. Monte Carlo simulations are then used to analyse the effect of coulomb damping and Duffing-type non-linearities when the device is subjected to broadband white noise and coloured noise excitations.

Résumé :
A common energy harvesting device uses a piezoelectric patch on a cantilever beam with a tip mass. The usual configuration exploits the linear resonance of the system; this works well for harmonic excitation and when the natural frequency is accurately tuned to the excitation frequency. A new configuration is proposed, consisting of a cantilever beam with a tip mass that is mounted vertically and excited in the transverse direction at its base. This device is highly non-linear with two potential wells for large tip masses, when the beam is buckled. The system dynamics may include multiple solutions and jumps between the potential wells, and these are exploited in the harvesting device. The electromechanical equations of motion for this system are developed, and its response for a range of parameters is investigated using phase portraits and bifurcation diagrams. The model is validated using an experimental device with three different tip masses, representing three interesting cases: a linear system; a low natural frequency, non-buckled beam; and a buckled beam. The most practical configuration seems to be the pre-buckled case, where the proposed system has a low natural frequency, a high level of harvested power and an increased bandwidth over a linear harvester.

Résumé :
A simulation model of a rotary pneumatic servo system has been developed and verified against an experimental system. The double-acting rotary actuator is a novel device utilizing flexible inflatable bladders. The device differs from conventional pneumatic cylinders in that it exhibits low levels of friction, as it has no sliding seals, but it does suffer from hysteresis caused by bladder distortion. The objective of this study was to develop a tool with which to investigate the effect of various forms of hysteresis and other parameters on system performance. The dynamic model utilizes a linearized analysis of pneumatic components based on earlier studies. The principal advance described in this paper relates to the inclusion of non-linear elements. These are hysteresis caused by friction or the distortion of flexible components, and a digital controller implementation. The simulation successfully predicted all major modes of behaviour. Simplified models of rubber and coulomb friction-induced hysteresis modified simulation performance in line with experimental results. An investigation in simulation showed that coulomb friction-induced hysteresis had a greater damping effect than that caused by distorting the bladders. This result applies only to position control, as hysteresis has been shown not to provide damping in trajectory control applications.

Résumé :
Ruby is one of the most popular and high-value gemstones that always attract the gemologist and jeweler in the diamond market. The wide use of ruby in various industries makes the grading of this gems more complicated due to a lot of synthetic and imitation rubies are made. The current grading techniques are mostly depending on the human visual assessment which prone to errors. This paper proposes a system that helps in grading the clarity characteristic of the ruby in non-invasive manner. The system includes a charge-coupled devices (CCD) and laser that is designed in the most suitable and effective way to conduct inspection on the light intensity of the ruby which will then determine the clarity of the ruby. CCD linear sensor is widely known as the reliable sensor especially when use in the optical system. The CCD linear sensor capture the light intensity from the ruby and convert it into the voltage value. The result shows a value of 1.7918 V obtained from the CCD linear sensor when ruby is placed in the system. This concludes that the CCD system can detect even slightest changes in the light intensity that can pass through the ruby and falls on the CCD linear sensor. The system is proven to be a reliable and effective system with 80% accuracy.

Résumé :
The paper presents a performance analysis of Novel CMOS Integrated Pseudo NMOS CC –ISFET (PNCC-ISFET) having zero static power dissipation. The main focus is on simulation of power and performance analysis along with the comparison with existing devices, which are used for water quality monitoring. This approach can improve calibration of device to a fairly wide range without the use of a high speed digital processor. The conventional devices generally used, consume high power and are not stable for long term monitoring. The conventional devices have a drawback of low value of slew rate, high power consumption, and non linear characteristics. In the proposed design(PNCC-ISFET) due to zero static power, low value of load capacitance on input signals, faster switching, use of fewer transistors and higher circuit density the device exhibits a better slew rate, piece-wise linear characteristic, and is seen consuming low power of the order of 30mW. The functionality of the circuit is tested using Tanner simulator version 15 for a 70nm CMOS process model. The proposed circuit reduces total power consumption per cycle, increases speed of operation, is fairly linear and simple to implement. This device has a simple architecture, and hence is very suitable for water quality monitoring applications.

Résumé :
In this paper we study the semi-active control of structural systems by means of variable stiffness devices, and the resulting non-linear dynamics of the controlled system. In particular, the study is applied to base-excited single-degree-of-freedom systems, controlled by variable ON–OFF elastic devices and subjected to simple motion conditions: free vibrations following initial conditions and stationary response to harmonic input. A performance index, which, in the case of base-excited structures, assumes an original dual formulation following the relative or absolute approaches, has been proposed for instantaneous optimal control. The study includes both the optimal control design and the observation of the resulting non-linear dynamics of the controlled system. The dynamic behavior of the controlled non-linear system is studied with respect to the parameters which characterize the algorithms, the control device, and the input. In this way, also by means of significant (and original) analytical solutions of the equations of motion, the optimal formulation of the algorithms, some particular behaviors of the controlled systems, and the performances of the control approach are shown and explained for the different control strategies.

Résumé :
As an emerging paradigm considering data privacy and transmission efficiency, decentralized learning aims to acquire a global model using the training data distributed over many user devices. It is a challenging problem since link loss, partial device participation, and non-independent and identically distributed (non-iid) data distribution would all deteriorate the performance of decentralized learning algorithms. Existing work may restrict to linear models or show poor performance over non-iid data. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a decentralized learning scheme based on distributed parallel stochastic gradient descent (DPSGD) and graph neural network (GNN) to deal with the above challenges. Specifically, each user device participating in the learning task utilizes local training data to compute local stochastic gradients and updates its own local model. Then, each device utilizes the GNN model and exchanges the model parameters with its neighbors to reach the average of resultant global models. The iteration repeats until the algorithm converges. Extensive simulation results over both iid and non-iid data validate the algorithm’s convergence to near optimal results and robustness to both link loss and partial device participation.

Résumé :
Full-duplex (FD), Device-to-Device (D2D) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are promising wireless communication techniques to improve the utilization of spectrum resources. Meanwhile, introducing FD, D2D and NOMA in cellular networks is very challenging due to the complex interference problem. To deal with the complex interference of FD D2D underlaying NOMA cellular networks, power allocation (PA) is extensively studied as an efficient interference management technique. However, most of the previous research works on PA to optimize energy efficiency only consider the system framework of partially joint combining techniques of FD, D2D and NOMA, and the constraints of optimization problem are very different. In this paper, in order to further improve the energy efficiency of a system, a dual-layer iteration power allocation algorithm is proposed to eliminate the complex interference. The outer-layer iteration is to solve the non-linear fractional objective function based on Dinkelbach, and the inner-layer iteration is to solve the non-convex optimization problem based on D.C. programming. Then, the non-convex and non-linear fractional objective function is transformed into a convex function to solve the optimal power allocation. In this approach, FD D2D users reuse the spectrum with downlink NOMA cellular users. Imperfect self-interference (SI) cancellation at the FD D2D users and the successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the strong NOMA user are considered in the system framework. The optimization problem is constructed to maximize the system’s energy efficiency with the constraints of successful SIC, QoS requirements, the maximum transmit power of BS and FD D2D users. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the traditional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of energy efficiency with a higher system sum rate.
