Résumé :
Abstract: Due to rapid proliferation in the number of vehicles on the road, finding a vacant car parking space is becoming challenging and ubiquitous in every major city, resulting traffic problems are bound to exist. Increase in traffic causes the number of accidents thatcause serious bodily harm to the road users, the pollution caused by the large amount of CO2 released by the vehicles, and the continuous stress of drivers who must drive in often narrow and very busy roads and who must look for a long time to find a space to park. Thus, tosolve the parking problem, lot of research is being done on smart parking management system mechanisms. The existing system gives us the information about the empty slots availability but does not give information about the exact location of parking slot available in sucha big area. This paper proposes an efficient, cost effective smart car Parking System on wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) technology using LabView that can easily locate and secure a vacant parking space at any car park deemed convenient to them. The parking slots are continuously monitored, and data is continuously updated in the display board. Index Terms: parking system, smart parking, IR sensor

Résumé :
This paper presents the design and development of a technique for an Autonomous and Versatile mode Parking System (AVPS) that combines a various number of parking modes. The proposed approach is different from that of many developed parking systems. Previous research has focused on choosing only a parking lot starting from two parking modes (which are parallel and perpendicular). This research aims at developing a parking system that automatically chooses a parking lot starting from four parking modes. The automatic AVPS was proposed for the car-parking control problem, and could be potentially exploited for future vehicle generation. A specific mode can be easily computed using the proposed strategy. A variety of candidate modes could be generated using one developed real time VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) algorithm providing optimal solutions with performance measures. Based on simulation and experimental results, the AVPS is able to find and recognize in advance which parking mode to select. This combination describes full implementation on a mobile robot, such as a car, based on a specific FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) card. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed innovation, an evaluation process comparing the proposed technique with existing techniques was conducted and outlined.

Résumé :
A visual guidance display is a module that was created to assist the pilot task when parking his plane or helping to control aircraft parking at the airport. Up to now, the pilot task is still assisted by a parking attendant (Marshaller) whose aim is to guide the movement of the aircraft to the parking lot. So, a practicum module was made as a medium of learning and knowledge along with the use of alternative technology. This module uses a Visual Guidance Display (automatic aircraft parking aid). This module design uses 3 32x8 pixel dot matrix display boards with dimensions of 13x3.5 cm which are combined into one to form an appropriate combination to produce a parking direction display. The display used is a super right led dot matrix. The controller is an ESP32 microcontroller and a series of shift registers to display the right, left, straight, and stop motion views as well as the distance display of the aircraft to the parking stop point on the apron.

Résumé :
The usage of four-wheeler vehicles has increased over time, and finding a parking spot to park the cars in is getting much more challenging. This issue also exists on the CIT CAMPUS, which led to developing a parking system using IoT technology to make it simpler to find parking places. An IoT-based car parking system based on LoRaWAN technology is suggested as a solution to this issue. The purpose of this research is to design and implement a well-organised parking system with a user-friendly application which can avoid cramming in the car parking area. In the proposed system, Arduino-LoRa transmitter boards, Ultrasonic sensor and LG01-LoRa gateway are used for the implementation. Ultrasonic sensor-equipped Arduino-LoRa transmitter boards are positioned in various parking lots. It is used as a processing element which detects the availability of parking space in the parking area and transmits the data to the gateway that is situated close to the parking lots. The data is received by the gateway and forwards the slot information to the Things Network. The vacant spaces in the parking area could be viewed using a mobile application. The proposed system includes a gate entry management system that reads the number plate of a vehicle using YOLO- V3 algorithm and stores the real-time vehicle log information in the database. This method makes it easier for drivers to identify the available parking spaces offering a streamlined parking experience, which helps users spend less time in parking their cars.

Résumé :
Parking lots can no longer be the inhospitable, pedestrian-minimalizing, environmentally-degrading uses of valuable open space that are accepted and tolerated as the â normâ . The open space that makes way for parking lots is too precious to be wasted on places that provide little or no comfort to the user while also contributing to the degradation of the environment. By inserting a fantastical landscape â one which engages the senses through color, texture, and smell â into the mind-dulling landscape of a large surface parking lot, the resulting comparison is a waking call about the missed opportunities of celebrating beauty and the environment. This gives value to the landscape in todayâ s mobile society where the natural world appears to be losing ground to the automobile. This thesis proposes a series of landscape structures over a vast surface parking lot â Potomac Yard Shopping Center in Alexandria, Virginia â that provide open space, the ecological benefits of absorbing storm water runoff and preventing UV bounce back, while ultimately repositioning and rejoining the pedestrian with the landscape. The project does not set out to eradicate parking. Rather, the project recognizes the need for parking in todayâ s mobile society but prioritizes the important connection that must exist between people and nature within that context.

The purpose of this study is to determine what type of preventative maintenance for a concrete parking structure will produce the maximum economic benefit. Existing models for concrete deterioration are analyzed for their accuracy in predicting the service lives of concrete structures and a model appropriate for concrete parking structures is selected. The selected model is modified to account for the unique microclimate that is created within a parking structure and used to create deterioration curves that quantify the fraction of a structure deteriorated at a given time. Several preventative maintenance programs that summarize current practice in the repair of concrete parking structures are created. The programs are analyzed using the selected concrete deterioration model and the method of preventative maintenance that maximizes the net present worth of a concrete parking structure is identified.

The goal of this thesis is to design a coprocessor expansion board for an On Board Computer (OBC) using Commersial Off The Shelf (COTS) components. This is done in order to meet the increasing demand of more processing power as spacecrafts become more autonomous. After evaluating a number of different options, the LS1046A from ARM was chosen as the processing unit. This would increase the processing power from the current 110 Dhrystone Million Instructions Per Second (DMIPS) to a theoretical 22 560 DMIPS. The schematic was designed in DxDesigner, and after the layout was completed signal integrity simulations were performed in HyperLynx. After modifications to termination resistances, the simulations showed good signal integrity confirming proper routing of the signals. After receiving the manufactured Printed Circuit Board (PCB) with all components mounted, some tests could be performed confirming that the power distribution and the system clock was functioning properly.

Résumé :
A fuzzy logic control algorithm for self parking of a model car has been developed and an embedded controller hardware has been designed, manufactured and programmed to control parking maneuvers of a model car within the scope of this thesis study. The model car chassis consists of a DC motor actuated traction system and a servomotor actuated steering mechanism. Position data and parking place data is obtained by a sensory system. A stepper motor driven rotary table is designed and assembled to the model car chassis for positioning of the sensory system. The controller hardware includes all the required peripherals for interfacing to the motors and sensory system. A visual computer program running in PC environment is developed in order to simulate the control characteristics of the fuzzy logic algorithm. The program allows the user to generate fuzzy sets and fuzzy set members and allows the user to define membership functions and fuzzy rules. Once an appropriate control characteristic is obtained, all the parameters can be exported to a file in order to be downloaded to the controller.

Résumé :
The primary objective of this work is to design a parking guidance system to reliably detect entering/exiting vehicles to a parking garage in a cost-efficient manner. Existing solutions (inductive loops, RFID based systems, and video image processors) at shopping malls, universities, airports etc., are expensive due to high installation and maintenance costs. There is a need for a parking guidance system that is reliable, accurate, and cost-effective. The proposed parking guidance system is designed to optimize the use of parking spaces and to reduce wait times. Based on a literature review we identify that the ultrasonic sensor is suitable to detect an entering/exiting vehicle. Initial experiments were performed to test the sensor using an Arduino based embedded system. Detection logic was then developed to identify a car after analyzing the initial test results. This logic was extended to trigger a camera to take an image of the vehicle for validation purposes. This system consists of Arduino, ultrasonic sensor, and a temperature sensor. It was installed and tested in Richard Beard Garage at the University of South Florida for five days. The test results of each trial are provided and average error for all the trials is calculated. The error cases occur due to golf carts, straddling cars on both entry/exit lanes, and people walking under the sensor. The average error of the system is 5.36% over five days (120 hrs). The estimated cost for one detector per lane is approximately $30.

Résumé :
This report represents the bachelor thesis examination by Julia Kastehelmi Rintamäki. The examination has been performed during spring semester 2013 at Volvo Construction Equipment in Eskilstuna. This report, Development of parking brake component, describes the product development process of the parking brake component for articulated hauler, wheel loader and grader. Volvo CE has problems with the parking brake switch that exist today on articulated hauler, wheel loader and grader. The purpose of this project is to develop one common solution for the parking brake component for articulated hauler, wheel loader and grader. The secondary purpose is to find final concept proposal for each machine. Employees at the Volvo CE were interviewed; they were contacted via e-mail, phone calls and via meetings to get the information about the machines and the information around the parking brake component. Volvo CE databases were also used for gathering information about standards and pictures. Lots of different ideas were sketched and concept proposals were created with the aid of material from marketing analysis, competitor analysis, target group analysis, requirement specification, function analysis, standards and ergonomics. Eight concept proposals were chosen to be evaluated with QFD, Pugh’s matrix and FMEA. Two concepts were most suitable and developed further to three dimensional models with the aid of Solid Works. The different aspects were taken into account when designing and dimensioning the final concepts. Two models were created with the aid of plasticine for figuring out the ergonomics and dimensions of the product. DFM, DFA, DFE, D4S were used for taking into account costs, assembly, dimensions and environmental impacts of this product. One of the concepts could replace the existing parking brake switch and suit in different cabins because of its size and design. This concept can be located on vertical or on horizontal plane. The other final concept solution functions better for the  articulated hauler on account of the double function with exhausting brake system activating before parking brake system. Suggestion for next steps for the project could be to make prototypes of the two concepts and test these components in real machines. Also interviewing users for further development of the final concepts and redesign if needed.

Résumé :
The technology of wirelessly networked micro sensors promises to revolutionize the way we interact with the physical environment. A new approach to solve parking-related issues of vehicles in parking lots using wireless sensor networks is presented. This approach enables the implementation of the Parking Management System (PMS®) in public parking lots found in Airports, Commercial Buildings, Universities, etc. The design architecture of the sensor nodes is discussed here. An overall view of the sensor network, which covers the whole of the parking lot, is also summarized. Detailed description of the software architecture that supports the hardware is provided. A sample experiment for detecting the movement of vehicles by placing the sensor nodes allowing vehicles to pass over it is performed. The readings are sent to a local database server, which gives an indication of the actual number of vehicles parked in the building at any time. This application-oriented project also identifies important areas of further work in power management, communication, collaborative signal processing and parking management.

Résumé :
Parking and parks are both crucial to downtown economic development. Many studies have shown that downtown parks significantly contribute to increasing surrounding property values and attract residents, businesses and investment. Meanwhile, sufficient available parking promotes accessibility to downtown that also contributes to increasing tax revenue for local government. However, both downtown parks and parking raise problems. Many downtown parks have become places for drug dealing, shooting and vandalism since the decline of downtowns in the 1960s. At the same time, residents and visitors alike oftentimes complain about the lack of parking while in fact parking spaces occupy a large amount of land in downtown. Parks and parking also compete for space in downtown where land value is higher than the rest of the city. To address these issues, several cities have begun to address the relationship between parking and parks by placing them in one place: park on the ground level and parking underneath. This typology is defined as a park-above-parking project in this research. However, this phenomenon has received little scholarly attention. To justify the existing situation of park-above-parking and to contemplate future projects, this research provides a spatial-based investigation to discuss the empirical relationships between social cultural and political-economic impacts, design quality, and related policy-making processes based on four cases. A longitudinal study that traces the direct and indirect impacts of park-above-parking projects was conducted for each case through both qualitative and quantitative methods. This research provides a set of methods for the measurement of contributions of park-above-parking downtown, connections between park quality, social use and adjacent economic growth, recommendations for land use planning policy-making and guidelines for the design of park-above-parking projects.

Résumé :
A lack or limited availability for parking may have multiple consequences, not the least of which is driver frustration, congestion, and air pollution. However, there is a greater problem that is not widely recognized by the public, namely the negative effect on the use of transit systems due to insufficient parking spaces close to key transit stations. Automated parking management systems, which have been successfully deployed in several European and Japanese cities, can manage parking needs at transit stations more effectively than other alternatives. Numerous studies have confirmed that quick and convenient automobile access to park-and-ride lots can be essential to making public transit competitive with the automobile in suburban areas. Automated parking systems use a robotic platform that carries each vehicle to one of the locations in a custom designed structure. Each location is designed compactly so that considerably more vehicles can be parked in the automated garages than the traditional parking lots. Central to the design of these systems are three key technologies, namely: 1. Mechanical design and the operation of vehicle transfer, i.e., the robotic platform 2. Structural and architectural requirements to meet safety and earthquake standards, among other design imperatives, 3. Automation and intelligent control issues as related to the overall operation and system engineering. This article concerns the first technology, and more specifically the design of the robotic platform for vehicle transfers. We will outline the overall design of the robot and the shuttle, followed by a description of the prototype that was developed in our laboratories. Subsequently, performance related issues and scalability of the current design will be analyzed.

Résumé :
The research presented within this paper was first envisioned at the Design Society Rigi Meeting 2023 in Paris, France. During Science Day, where attendees include the Design Society Board of Management, Advisory Board, Special Interest Groups and ChaptersLeaders and other invited guests including representatives of SNCF Research (host of the meeting), it was identified that Design Society members can face the challenge of justifying the value of engineering design. This value has been harder to justify in recent years with a lack of visibility of the impact of engineering design. This value is important to state to increase the chances of securing research funding for design society members, and toinfluence policy and strategy on funding of engineering design research in the future as is an aim of the charitable company.
