Seco, Josi M., Emilio Quiqoa et Ricardo Riguera. The Assignment of the Absolute Configuration by NMR using Chiral Derivatizing Agents. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199996803.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR spectroscopy) is a research technique that uses the magnetic properties of atomic nuclei to determine physical and chemical properties of atoms or the molecules in which they are contained. Proton NMR (1H NMR) is a technique that applies NMR spectroscopy specifically to the hydrogen-1 nuclei within the molecules of a substance, in order to determine the structure of that substance's molecules. The use of 1H NMR for the assignment of absolute configuration of organic compounds is a well-established technique. Recent research describes the technique's application to mono-, bi- and trifunctional compounds. In addition, several new auxiliary reagents, mono- and biderivatization procedures, on-resin methodologies and more recently, the use of 13C NMR, have been introduced to the field. In The Assignment of the Absolute Configuration by NMR Using Chiral Derivatizing Agents: A Practical Guide, eminent Professor of Organic Chemistry Ricardo Riguera organizes this cutting-edge NMR research. Professor Riguera offers a short and usable guide that introduces the reader to the research with a plethora of details and examples. The book briefly explains the theoretical aspects necessary for understanding the methodology, dedicating most of its space to covering the practical aspects of the assignment, with examples and spectra taken from the authors' own experiments. Upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, and chemical researchers will find this guide useful for their studies and practice.

Whittier, Nancy. Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190235994.003.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The introduction lays out a model of social movement relationships that are neither coalitions nor oppositional, including their form and outcomes. It outlines three types of relationships between feminists and conservatives: collaborative adversarial relationships, narrow neutrality, and ambivalent alliances. It gives an overview of the three case studies (pornography, child sexual abuse, and the Violence Against Women Act, or VAWA). It discusses feminist and conservative engagement with the intersections of gender and race in issues of violence and crime. It discusses mechanisms and paths of social movement outcomes for federal legislation and policy and cultural processes within the state, including emotion, frames, and discourse. It gives an overview of the book’s methodology and data, including analysis of transcripts of congressional hearings, conservative and feminist publications, amicus briefs, and governmental and archival material.

Davy, Daniel. Gold Rush Societies and Migrant Networks in the Tasman World. Edinburgh University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474477345.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This book creatively explores the gold rushes in the Tasman World through an examination of the Otago gold rushes. It adopts a new methodology to reveal how transnational connections and local social and natural environments shaped colonial identities. The first monograph-length study on the Otago gold rushes and their place in the histories of British and Irish migration, it further increases our understanding of the British World by grounding transnational networks in the local ecologies, geologies and weather patterns which shaped local social structures and profoundly affected migrants' relationships to loved ones in Britain, Ireland and elsewhere. In doing so, Gold Rush Societies evolves as neither a local nor a transnational history but one which blends the two into a single study and offers fresh perspectives on each in the process.

Westphal, Kenneth R. Hegel’s Natural Law Constructivism. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198778165.003.0014.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Legend has it that, in principle, Hegel’s Philosophical Outlines of Justice cannot afford any progress in morals, nor any progressive politics, either because his moral philosophy is derived a priori from his first principles, or because his putative theory of ‘justice’ must simple endorse whatever lurch the Weltgeist next takes. Hegel’s methodology and his Science of Logic are important to understanding his moral philosophy. This chapter details four related methodological precautions that must be observed. It then considers some substantive fundamentals of Hegel’s moral philosophy, central to his version of ‘Natural Law Constructivism’. Thus prepared, the chapter details several specific regards in which Hegel’s normative social morality is progressive both principally and practically, and concludes by reflecting on Hegel’s career of public activism on behalf of liberal republican reform.

Kyritsis, Dimitrios. The Possibility of Constitutional Theory. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199672257.003.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter sets out the main tenets of moralized constitutional theory, which supplies the methodology of the book. According to moralized constitutional theory the purpose of constitutional law is to buttress the legitimacy of a political regime by furnishing standing assurances that government power will be used properly. Although moralized constitutional theory maintains that contentious constitutional law issues are ultimately determined by principles of political morality, it is compatible with both legal positivism and anti-positivism. Moreover, it does not ignore either the history of different legal systems or considerations of political exigency to which constitutions are also sensitive. But it insists that the overarching reason history and political exigency matter is a moral one. Nor does moralized constitutional theory block reform. It is only meant to answer the pressing moral question under what conditions state coercion is warranted here and now.

Résumé :
Thucydides and Tacitus are both uncomfortable authors whose unsparing commitment to revealing the truth results in grim depictions of the amoral deployment of political power—power for the sake of power—in idiosyncratic and difficult idioms. However, Tacitus never announces a program of Thucydides-imitation, whether pertaining to methodology or theme. Nor do ancient commentators link Tacitus to his Greek predecessor. Nevertheless, the two are much alike in important aspects of their historiographical achievements. The chapter explores a pair of passages in which the two historians treat one of history’s “repeating events”—defection from an imperial power. In examining the narratives of the Mytilenean and Batavian revolts (Thuc. 3.2–6, 8–18, 23–33, 35–50; Tac. H. 4.12–37, 54–79, 5.14–26), it gives due attention to “each new permutation of circumstances,” the important proviso that Thucydides attaches to his prediction about recurrence (3.82.2).

Dimas, Panos, Russell E. Jones et Gabriel R. Lear, dir. Plato's Philebus. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198803386.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The Philebus is an extraordinarily creative and profound examination of what makes for a good human life, containing some of Plato’s most sophisticated discussions of moral psychology (especially of pleasure), knowledge, metaphysics, and philosophical methodology. This volume brings together leading scholars of ancient philosophy to take a fresh and comprehensive look at this important work. The essays comprising this volume are each focused on a relatively brief section of the Philebus and are arranged in the order of the passages they discuss. They originated in a week-long seminar, the first of the Plato Dialogue Project, in which the contributors were asked to offer an overview of the argument of their passage, focusing on issues of philosophical significance as they saw fit. The conversation continued over subsequent months, as the contributors and editors exchanged written comments on each other’s papers. The result is not and is not intended to be a commentary, nor does it aim to present a unified interpretation. It is instead a series of close, original philosophical examinations, often in conversation with each other, which together provide continuous coverage of the Philebus.

Rückert, Joachim, et Frank L. Schäfer, dir. Repertorium der Vorlesungsquellen zu Savigny. Klostermann, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.5771/9783465142706.
