Николаев, Андрей Борисович. « Reflections on Tsuyoshi Hasegawa’s Review ». Journal of Modern Russian History and Historiography 6, no 1 (2013) : 17–34. http://dx.doi.org/10.1163/22102388-00600004.

Résumé :
This article is a response to Tsuyoshi Hasegawa’s review of Nikolaev’s 2005 book, Revolution and Power: The IV State Duma, 27 February – 3 March 1917. It recounts the history of Nikolaev’s acquaintance with Hasegawa and underscores the importance of Hasegawa’s contributions to the understanding of the February Revolution. The response critically assesses Hasegawa’s interpretation of the February 1917 Revolution, especially his treatment of the role of Duma liberals and his emphasis on mass politics, but only in so far as the interpretation colors Hasegawa’s review of Nikolaev’s book. Nikolaev’s response adds new details to the history of the February Revolution, by showing how, on the evening of 27 February, the 1st Infantry Reserve Regiment joined the revolution. Nikolaev emphasizes that his main ambition is to persuade historians to take a new look at the role of the Duma liberals in February 1917.

Résumé :
The article is devoted to the work Alexander S. Nikolaev (1877 – 1934) in the Petrograd Institute of Out-of-School Education in late 1910s – early 1920s. His teaching activities at the Institute and the place of archival issues in the program of its museum department have been studied on the basis of archival documents. The Institute initially focused on training of instructors and employees of cultural institutions, school teachers for adults and universities professors. The Institute had a museum section (department – faculty), on the basis of which several exemplary workshops for creating of manuals and their mastering were to be organized. That is the context in which A. S. Nikolaev’s projects of archival museum creation should be studied. One of such projects worked out by Nikolaev at that time has gone unnoticed until its publication in the Appendix. The connection of this project with the development level of museum affairs of the period is shown. Nikolaev's aspiration to show evolution of archiving and to follow fond formation stage by stage and his use of photographic and graphic materials are also noted. Moreover, it is the first assessment of the work of the Institute as one of the centers for teaching archiving in late 1910s – early 1920s.Training at the museum department of the Institute included a number of courses in both archiving and preservation of documentary monuments. This was due not only to the traditional proximity of archiving and museum work, but also to the circumstances of the first post-revolutionary years. Many museums (located in palaces and mansions of nobility) acquired valuable archival collections. They looked for an opportunity to use these in their scientific activities and exhibitions. The latter was due to the emphasis put on history of daily life and introduction of sociological method in museum work.

Résumé :
Regular (for 5 years) addition of salt iodinated with potassium iodinate to diets of children living in a region with moderate iodine deficiency normalized iodine content in the organism, decreased the incidence of goiter from 22.6 to 7.3% (according to ultrasonic data), and prevented an increase in the incidence of goiter during the prepubertal period. Evaluation of the size of goiter in screening examinations by palpation using О. V. Nikolaev’s classification leads to hyperdiagnosis (67%>), while palpation in combination with WHO classification results in hypodiagnosis of goiter (47%). Palpation of the thyroid with WHO classification is recommended as the main screening method; such a combination of methods results in a lower incidence of erroneous diagnoses (22%) than with Nikolaev's classification (56%). The level of serum TTH did not depend on iodine prophylaxis and was normal.

Hasegawa, Tsuyoshi. « Review of A. B. Nikolaev, Revoliutsiia i vlast’ : How Has Nikolaev Changed the Interpretation of the February Revolution ? » Journal of Modern Russian History and Historiography 6, no 1 (2013) : 1–16. http://dx.doi.org/10.1163/22102388-00600003.

Résumé :
A.B. Nikolaev’s book has not received much attention either in the West or in Russia, but it is an important book that has significantly changed our understanding the February Revolution of 1917. Nikolaev’s meticulously researched monograph, based on a wide array of new sources, challenges the previously dominant interpretation that the Provisional Committee of the State Duma (Duma Committee) was forced to seize power only to stem the tide of the insurgency from below. He argues that the Duma Committee was from its inception clear about its intention to overthrow the old regime and to create a new power to replace it even before the Petrograd Soviet was formed. The Duma Committee played a crucial role in prompting military units to take the side of the revolution, in steering the insurgents to the State Duma, in creating the Military Commission to organize insurgents to occupy strategic positions in the city, in taking over the food supply commission to feed the insurgents, in attacking and destroying the tsarist police, while preventing and suppressing potentially dangerous anarchical pogroms, and in taking control over the imperial bureaucracy. Nikolaev also raises an interesting question about the relationship between the Duma Committee, the State Duma and the Provisional Government by arguing that the Provisional Government made a hasty and cardinal mistake in cutting its relationship with the State Duma. This book is a landmark in the interpretation of the February Revolution, and especially of the role of the Duma liberals in the revolution.

Résumé :
This article analyzes the domestic memoirs related events 1917–21. Characterized Istpartu activity aimed at collecting evidence memoir. An important key base for researchers of the revolutionary events of 1917-1921 in Ukraine, it occupies a memorial legacy of witnesses of those turbulent years. After the defeat of the liberation struggle and the establishment of Soviet power in Ukraine, Istpartu was created in 1921. At one time, Istpartu took a leading place among the scientific institutions of Ukraine. Istpartu had its own journal, Chronicle of the Revolution, 57 issues were issued, in which memoirs were published mainly by supporters of the Soviet camp. "Chronicle of the revolution" in 1922-1935 published 168 memories of revolutionary events in Ukraine, among the authors there were 123 direct participants in those events. The activities of Istpartu at the regional level contributed to the study and publication of materials on the history of the revolution and the Civil War in Ukraine. Also, in the field, in the 1920s. local editions of regional Eastparts began to appear. Mostly these were collections of documents and memoirs, which often contain unique material that did not appear in official documents. For example, the book “Pages of the struggle. The collection of materials on the history of the revolutionary movement in Nikolaev", prepared by the Nikolaev Istpartu in 1923. In Soviet Ukraine, after the establishment of the dictatorship of the Bolsheviks, writing memoirs (with a non-Soviet perception of the past) about the revolutionary events of 1917 and the Civil War, and even more so publishing them, was practically impossible, and not only because of restrictions on archives, but also because hard censorship behind the printed word. The memoirs that were issued in those years for the “Marxist approach” are characterized by Soviet schematics and ideologically verified published material.

The review analyzes the collection of papers dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Andrei B. Nikolaev, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Russian History (19th – 21st Centuries) of Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia. The articles in the collection highlight A. Nikolaev’s contribution to the study of the State Duma’s role in the February Revolution and in the construction of new authority. Scientific and organizational role of A. Nikolaev, primarily, in the Tauride Readings, an annual scientific conference on the history of Russian parliamentarism, is pointed out. The importance of the collection under review is emphasized from the point of view of historiography and source study. It has been shown that, on the one hand, the collection reflects the development of historiographical thought concerning the role of the State Duma in revolutionary events, one of the most important issues of the Great Russian Revolution of 1917. On the other hand, new materials on political history of Russia in the early 20th century are introduced into scientific circulation in a number of articles of the collection under review.

Résumé :
Записки А. А. The notes of Aleksey A. Nikolaev are dedicated to the famous singer and vocal teacher, Professor at the Moscow Conservatory, one of the representatives of the creative dynasty of the Nikolaevs and Titz. After spending many years next to Hugo Titz, the author captured him not only as a wonderful performer, but also as a close relative, friend and mentor. The notes begin with a brief history of the migration of common ancestors from Germany to Russia in the second half of the 18th century; among the hobbies of these people, music occupied a very prominent place. Musically gifted was the father of Hugo Titz (and the maternal grandfather of Aleksey Nikolaev) Jonathan. He was seriously fond in singing, took vocal lessons in Moscow from Anna I. Knipper and, undoubtedly, passed on his singing gift to his son. Nikolaev tells about the teaching of Hugo Titz at the Moscow Conservatory (their classes were nearby), his articipation in performances of the Conservatory Opera Studio; shares impressions of his performance of opera parts and of the annual chamber concerts. The personal traits of Hugo Titz are revealed, in particular, in episodes that tell about joint pastime during vacations and trips to Kazakhstan to visit their deported relatives. Finally, the author attaches great importance to the influence of Titz on his own work: Nikolaev showed the singer his vocal compositions, which Titz often performed himself, as well as his students, such as P. Glubokiy, V. Chernov, and many others.

Résumé :
The article is devoted to the Vladikavkaz city Nikolaev school, which was opened in 1874. Documents preserved in the fund of the Public Schools Directorate of the Central State Archive (CSA) of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania indicate that the school was a male educational institution and the name of the school was named after Nikolai Ugodnik. The school was originally a four-year school, later, in 1897, it was transformed into a six-year school. It was subordinate to the Ministry of Public Education and the Directorate of public schools in the Terek region. On November 3, 1895, the Society for Aid to the Poorest Students of the Vladikavkaz Nikolaev School was officially registered at the school. The fact of the creation of such a Society testifies to the fact that the school was not intended exclusively for children of privileged classes. The October Revolution made great changes in the educational system established by this period. Many schools have ceased to function. The same fate befell the Nikolaev School, but not immediately. The educational institution managed to prepare several generations of graduates who continued their education in higher educational institutions before and post-revolutionary Russia. The Nikolaev school entered the history of Vladikavkaz as a source of enlightenment, thanks to which dozens of young people who did not live not only in Vladikavkaz, but also those who entered here from remote areas of the region received education. The school existed until 1921, having survived two Russian revolutions and the period of the First World War.

Résumé :
The tectonic change of 1917 not only disrupted the country but also placed, for a brief moment, a “little man” at the centre of “big story.” Nikolaev was a typical representative of ordinary people being pushed into a corner by circumstances and deceived in their expectations by a pseudo-socialist state. The high expectations of ordinary people, who were involved by the Bolsheviks in their politics, naturally crashed into the harsh realities of the construction of socialism.Brought to political life from social non-existence, this ordinary man soon became unnecessary to the new political regime’s needs and was subject to manipulation and mobilization by the party. This is how he ended up being merged with the human mass, which was faceless to the party nomenclature. However, this ordinary man was opposed to the latter and thus became the cause of large-scale social cataclysms. He got a weapon and killed Kirov; the personification of the political power against which Nikolaev’s act was directed. In the early Soviet period, many representatives of this social stratum raised their voices in protest, even if not in a terrorist form. Many of them were physically eliminated, the rest were brought to submission. This was a demonstration of the toughness of the Bolshevik regime, which transformed into the regime of Stalin’s personal power in the 1930s, involving terrorist forms of governing.

Résumé :
The monograph under review is the first experience in researching the history of the preparation and conduct of the State Conference held in Moscow on August 12–15, 1917. A. Nikolaev is the first to introduce a significant number of archival sources related to the subject into scholarly discourse. The published work pays special attention to the various concepts of the conference and to the struggle of political forces around that national forum. For the first time in historiography, it closely examines the important issues of the participants in the State Conference and the mechanism of its convocation. The review notes A. Nikolaev’s criticism towards the main historiographical myths connected with the subject: the central role of the State Conference in the preparation of the Kornilov affair and non-participation of the Bolsheviks in the forum. The monograph fills one of the largest gaps in the history of the revolutionary year of 1917.

Résumé :
54 female burials from Late Scythian Nikolaevka burial ground of Kherson district are analyzed in the paper. They were excavated by Erast Symonovich expedition during 1960—1970. The analysis of materials from female burials showed that Nikolaevka burial ground was in use during all chronological period of local Lower Dnieper variant of the Late Scythian culture. Female burials reflected the periods of origin, heyday and decline of this burial ground. The funerary rite and grave goods are typical for the Late Scythian culture, and have analogies among the materials of the Zolotaya Balka, Krasnyi Mayak, the necropolises of Tanais, Nikoniy, the Scythian Neapolis and Zolotoye. Female burials traditionally contained personal items: bronze mirrors, brooches, awls and knives, beads, earrings, bracelets and rings. There are unique finds in the Nikolaevka burial ground: rare types of terra sigilata pottery, beads from semiprecious stones, the ring with a portrait gem, bronze tweezers. The square catacombs, unusual for the Lower Dnieper variant of the Late Scythian culture, were recorded in the Nikolaevka burial ground. In our opinion, these catacombs can be a marker of the migration of part population from the south-western Crimea to the Lower Dnieper in the first centuries AD.

Résumé :
The Pernik, Nikolaevo and Malinovo Grabens are almost completely filled with Paleogene sediments. Brown coal has been mined in the Pernik Basin for decades and the rock associations have been subdivided by previous researchers into different in name, age and rock content informal units. In the present work, five formal lithostratigraphic units are defined and described: Masoritsa (Priabonian–Oligocene), Lyulin (Rupelian), Nikolaevo (upper Rupelian–Chattian), Vladaya (Chattian), and Pernik (Chattian) Formations. The first three units are defined for the first time in the present work. The name Masoritsa Formation is introduced for the breccia-conglomerate formation described according to the requirements of the Stratigraphic Code of Bulgaria with a geographic name, type section, relationships with the other units and distribution within the studied area. The Lyulin Formation, which is a nude name, is stabilized in the nomenclature with a type section and lithological characteristics.
