Résumé :
It has been widely demonstrated that dreaming occurs throughout human sleep. However, we once again are facing new variants of the equation “REM sleep = Dreaming.” Nielsen proposes a model that assumes covert REM processes in NREM sleep. I argue against this possibility, because dream research has shown that REM sleep is not a necessary condition for dreaming to occur.[Nielson]

Résumé :
Nielsen's model presents a new isomorphic brain-mind viewpoint, according to which the sole dream generator is found in a REM-on (explicit or covert REM) mechanism. Such a model cannot explain the dreamlike activity during SWS (slow wave sleep), SO (sleep onset) and in the last period of sleep. Moreover the hypothesis contrasts with Solms's data, which show that dreaming is present also in case of destruction of the REM generator.[Nielsen; Solms]

Résumé :
Various theoretical models on CO2 permeation were discussed that included Maxwell model, Bruggeman model, Lewis-Nielson model and Pal model. These models were used for comparing the relative permeance of CO2 with the previously published experimental data on silica nanoparticles filled polysulfone/polyimide (PSF/PI) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). The results showed that the deviation was in the increasing order: Lewis-Nielsen model< Maxwell model< Pal model< Bruggeman model. All these models assumed that the fillers are spherical in shape. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) cross-sectional image indicated that the silica particles were prolate ellipsoids that were dispersed in the matrix. To investigate the prolate effect, the Maxwell-Wagner-Sillar (MWS) model was employed. The evaluation from cross-sectional image of the membrane structure indicated that the shape factor along z-direction gave a minimum deviation of 17.52%-20.10% at 2-10 bar feed pressure respectively.

Nielsen's concept of “covert REM sleep” accounts for more of the complexity in sleep psychophysiology than its conceptual predecessors such as the tonic-phasic model. With new neuroimaging findings, such concepts lead to more precise sleep psychophysiology including both traditional polysomnographic signs and neuronal activity in greater proximity to the actual point sources and distributed networks which generate dreaming.[Hobson et al.; Nielsen]

Résumé :
Models describing how fillers affect the barrier properties of polymers remain an important research topic to improve applications such as hydrogen storage or food preservation. The Nielsen model, one of the earliest models for such predictions, is still one of the most widely used in the literature. However, it does not provide quantitative information on arrangements of fillers inside a polymer matrix, which is crucial for the definition of suitable filler distributions in barrier materials. Therefore, the channel model was developed in this work, which extends the Nielsen model by determining the relative distances between the fillers in regular filler arrangements in polymer matrices. This allows us to relate the permeation properties of filled polymer membranes to the geometric properties of the filler arrangement in simulations and experimental measurements. Simulations with geometries defined according to the channel model showed good agreement with the predictions of the Nielsen model. This demonstrated that the channel model can be a valuable tool for predicting at least mean geometric distances in studied polymer membranes. The validity range of the channel model was limited to a value range of the filler volume fraction 0.01≤ϕf≤0.5 based on theoretical considerations.

Résumé :
Abstract This article analyzes the tensile modulus of shape memory polymer nanocomposites (SMPNs) at ambient temperature. Several conventional models, such as rule of mixtures, Halpin–Tsai and Kerner–Nielsen, cannot practically estimate the modulus due to the absence of some main parameters for nanocomposites. Additionally, some parameters in Kerner–Nielsen and Sato–Furukawa models are useless and ineffective, due to the small concentration and high modulus of nanofillers in SMPNs. Therefore, Kerner–Nielsen and Sato–Furukawa models are simplified and modified to deliver the simple models for calculation of modulus in SMPNs. Various nanocomposite samples are provided to prove the validity of the suggested models. The results demonstrate that the predictions of the suggested models have a good match with the experimental results. The models also demonstrate high simplicity and good accuracy for the calculation of modulus in SMPNs at ambient temperature. Generally, the calculated results disclose that the modified Kerner–Nielsen model is preferable for approximation of modulus in SMPNs.

Abstract In this paper, the laboratory data were compared with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) Flow3D for predicting the beginning of sediment incipient motion in rigid boundary channel for two types of sands, irrigation, and sewer types, in rectangular flume (0.5*0.5)m cross-section. Tests were made for soil samples with different diameters, specific weights. The testing was performed in slopes ranging from 0.001-0.003 for irrigation types and 0.0025-0.025 for sewer types depending on the original parameter. The Flow-3D software has simulated the laboratory work using scouring models MPM and Nielsen. the relation between sediment incipient motion velocity, particle size, and channel bed slope was predicted. The results were relatively more than laboratory data for the MPM model, while grating convergence for Nielsen model, especially for small diameter sediment. Also, the laboratory results are more close to the results of Flow3D using the Nielsen model when the value of bed slope of the channel is greater, and vice versa when the slope decreases.

Résumé :
This dissertation uses Barndoff-Nielsen and Shephard (BN-S) models to model swap, a type of financial derivative, and analyze geophysical data for estimation of major earthquakes. From empirical observation of the stock market activity and earthquake occurrence, we observe that the distributions have high kurtosis and right skewness. Consequently, such data cannot be captured by stochastic models driven by a Wiener process. Non-Gaussian processes of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type are one of the most significant candidates for being the building blocks of models of financial economics. These models offer the possibility of capturing important distributional deviations from Gaussianity and thus these are more practical models of dependence structures. Introduced by Barndorff-Nielsen and Shephard these processes are not only convenient to model volatility in financial market, but have an independent interest for modeling stationary time series of various kinds. For the financial data we use BN-S models to price the arbitrage-free value of volatility, variance, covariance, and correlation swap. Such swaps are used in financial markets for volatility hedging and speculation. We use the S&P500 and NASDAQ index for parameter estimation and numerical analysis. We show that with this model the error estimation in fitting the delivery price is much less than the existing models with comparable parameters. For any given time interval, the earthquake magnitude data have three main properties: (1) magnitude is a non-negative stationary stochastic process; (2) for any finite interval of time there are only finite number of jumps; (3) the sample path of the magnitude of an earthquake consists of upward jumps (significant earthquake) and a gradual decrease (aftershocks). For such geophysical data we specifically use Gamma Ornstein Uhlenbeck processes driven by a Levy process to estimate a major earthquake in a certain region in California. Rigorous regression analysis is provided, and based on that, first-passage times are computed for different sets of data. Both applications demonstrate the significance of BN-S models to phenomena that follow non-Gaussian distributions.

Résumé :

The purpose of this study is to identify an impact on an option pricing within NASDAQ OMX Stockholm Market, if the underlying

asset prices include jumps. The current financial crisis, when jumps are much more evident than ever, makes this issue very actual and important in the global sense for the portfolio hedging and other risk management applications for example for the banking sector. Therefore, an investigation is based on OMXS30 Index and SEB A Bank. To detect jumps the Barndorff-Nielsen and Shephard non-parametric bipower variation test is used. First it is examined on simulations, to be finally implemented on the real data. An affirmation of a jumps occurrence requires to apply an appropriate model for the option pricing. For this purpose the Kou model, a double exponential jump-diffusion one, is proposed, as it incorporates essential stylized facts not available for another models. Th parameters in the model are estimated by a new approach - a combined cumulant matching with lambda taken from the Barrndorff-Nielsen and Shephard test. To evaluate how the Kou model manages on the option pricing, it is compared to the Black-Scholes model and to the real prices of European call options from the Stockholm Stock Exchange. The results show that the Kou model outperforms the latter.

The aim of this abstract is to study the formulation of Niels Bohr´s atomic model in the beginning of the twentieth century, regarding the atomic model of Rutherford. The issues about instability resulting from this model and the observation that the classical mechanic could not express the atomic reality were both intensively approached themes those days. Besides that, spectroscopy data showed that the raising of spectral lines, characteristic of chemical elements, should be explained by an atomic model. The classical mechanic is replaced in the analysis of the atomic phenomena under Bohr´s atomic model. After Max Planck´s ideas, the energy from the atomic processes is not absorbed nor is it continually freed. Actually it is found in the form of energy packages called quanta. To develop his atomic model, Bohr uses studies from Rutherford experiments as well as works about the spectral lines observed from spectroscopic analyses on chemical elements, in which each chemical element can be identified from the light spectrum emitted when this element after receiving energy changes the orbit and remains unstable, freeing an amount of energy in the form of light at the moment that it returns to its stable state

Chapter 5 describes how the concept of quantization (discretization) was first applied to atoms. This was done in 1913 by Niels Bohr, using Ernest Rutherford’s paradigm-changing, solar-system model of atomic structure, wherein the positively charged nucleus occupies a tiny central space, much smaller than the known sizes of atoms. Bohr, postulating a quantized version of this model for hydrogen, was able to explain previously inexplicable experimental features of that atom. He did so via an ad hoc quantization procedure that discretized the single electron’s energy, its angular momentum, and the radii of the orbits it could be in around the nucleus, formulas forwhich are presented, along with a diagram displaying the quantized energies. Despite this success, Bohr’s model failed not only for helium, with its two electrons, but for all other neutral atoms. It left some physicists hopeful, ready for whatever the next step might be.

Résumé :
This article discusses the history of quantum physics, beginning with an analysis of the process through which a community of quantum theorists and experimentalists came into being. In particular, it traces the roots and fruits of Max Planck’s papers in irreversible processes in nature. It proceeds by exploring the origin and subsequent development of Niels Bohr’s so-called ‘planetary model’ of the atom, focusing on the extension of the model by Arnold Sommerfeld and members of his school as well to Bohr’s use of his principles of correspondence and adiabatic invariance. It also considers the post-war years, as the problems of atomic spectroscopy sparked the development of new methodological approaches to quantum theory. Finally, it offers a history of the two distinct new forms of quantum mechanics put forward in the mid-1920s: Werner Heisenberg, Max Born, and Pascual Jordan’s matrix mechanics, and Erwin Schrödinger’s wave mechanics.

Chapter 2 looks at Woolf’s writings from 1926 onwards in relation to both Louis de Broglie’s work on the wave-particle duality of radiation and matter and, more significantly, Niels Bohr’s development of the principle of complementarity in 1927. The chapter argues for Woolf’s increasing interest in, attempts at, and ease in writing complementary models, linking this to contemporary scientific developments, but also exploring a broader early twentieth-century interest in complementary approaches, including in psychology. It distinguishes between duality and complementarity, arguing that Woolf can usefully be understood as a complementary writer. Woolf’s conjunctions and pronouns are explored in detail, as are her ideas on androgyny and her writing of light, and the form of her writings is also considered, in particular her inclusion of what she herself called ‘facts’ and ‘vision’ in the same works. Among other texts, this chapter focuses on Orlando, The Waves, and The Years.

Résumé :
This article discusses the first four decades of the history of random matrix theory (RMT), that is, until about 1990. It first considers Niels Bohr's formulation of the concept of the compound nucleus, which is at the root of the use of random matrices in physics, before analysing the development of the theory of spectral fluctuations. In particular, it examines the Wishart ensemble; Dyson's classification leading to the three canonical ensembles — Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE), Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE), and Gaussian Symplectic Ensemble (GSE); and the breaking of a symmetry or an invariance. It also describes how random matrix models emerged from quantum physics, more specifically from a statistical approach to the strongly interacting many-body system of the atomic nucleus. The article concludes with an overview of data on nuclear resonances, many-body theory, chaos, number theory, scattering theory, replica trick and supersymmetry, disordered solids, and interacting fermions and field theory.

Résumé :
Nuclear physics emerged as the dominant field in experimental and theoretical physics between 1919 and 1939, the two decades between the First and Second World Wars. Milestones were Ernest Rutherford’s discovery of artificial nuclear disintegration (1919), George Gamow’s and Ronald Gurney and Edward Condon’s simultaneous quantum-mechanical theory of alpha decay (1928), Harold Urey’s discovery of deuterium (the deuteron), James Chadwick’s discovery of the neutron, Carl Anderson’s discovery of the positron, John Cockcroft and Ernest Walton’s invention of their eponymous linear accelerator, and Ernest Lawrence’s invention of the cyclotron (1931–2), Frédéric and Irène Joliot-Curie’s discovery and confirmation of artificial radioactivity (1934), Enrico Fermi’s theory of beta decay based on Wolfgang Pauli’s neutrino hypothesis and Fermi’s discovery of the efficacy of slow neutrons in nuclear reactions (1934), Niels Bohr’s theory of the compound nucleus and Gregory Breit and Eugene Wigner’s theory of nucleus+neutron resonances (1936), and Lise Meitner and Otto Robert Frisch’s interpretation of nuclear fission, based on Gamow’s liquid-drop model of the nucleus (1938), which Frisch confirmed experimentally (1939). These achievements reflected the idiosyncratic personalities of the physicists who made them; they were shaped by the physical and intellectual environments of the countries and institutions in which they worked; and they were buffeted by the profound social and political upheavals after the Great War: the punitive postwar treaties, the runaway inflation in Germany and Austria, the Great Depression, and the greatest intellectual migration in history, which encompassed some of the most gifted experimental and theoretical nuclear physicists in the world.

Résumé :
In the case of markets characterized by a stationary primary demand, the relevant dimension for measuring a company’s success is represented by market shares. The paper aims to build and comment on a model that gauges the competitive effects of marketing maneuvers on market shares, with reference to tea-based beverages in Italy in the period November 2010 – October 2015. This analysis will be instrumental in establishing the effectiveness of marketing policies based on promotions or advertising. We estimate such a model on weekly data provided by IRI Infoscan and Nielsen, involving the top five brands in the Italian market. After a descriptive analysis and a stationarity test, we estimate a Multinomial Logit model, making use of the Seemingly Unrelated Regressions method. The results allow us to identify the effectiveness of each brand’s marketing policies. Moreover, they enable us to derive the matrices of direct and cross elasticities of brands’ market shares with respect to the main marketing tools (price, promotions, distribution, advertising investments) and to compare basic and average market shares. Based on these results, it is therefore possible to identify the market’s competitive structure, revealing the most incisive factors to be price and weighted distribution, while advertising investments are significant in only a few cases and elasticities are remarkably low. The competitive structure appears to be of a horizontal type (i.e., cross elasticities do not vary greatly).

Résumé :
This chapter studies subgroups of free groups using the combinatorics of graphs and a simple operation called folding. It introduces a topological model for free groups and uses this model to show the rank of the free group H and whether every finitely generated nontrivial normal subgroup of a free group has finite index. The edge paths and the fundamental group of a graph are discussed, along with subgroups via graphs. The chapter also considers five applications of folding: the Nielsen–Schreier Subgroup theorem, the membership problem, index, normality, and residual finiteness. A group G is residually finite if for every nontrivial element g of G there is a normal subgroup N of finite index in G so that g is not in N. Exercises and research projects are included.

Résumé :
In this chapter, machine learning techniques are applied to examine consumer food choices, specifically purchasing patterns in relation to fresh fruit and vegetables. This product category contributes some of the highest profit margins for supermarkets, making understanding consumer choices in that category important not just for health but also economic reasons. Several unsupervised and supervised machine learning techniques, including hierarchical clustering, latent class analysis, linear regression, artificial neural networks, and deep learning neural networks, are illustrated using Nielsen Consumer Panel Dataset, a large and high-quality source of information on consumer purchases in the United States. The main finding from the clustering analysis is that households who buy less fresh produce are those with children – an important insight with significant public health implications. The main outcome from predictive modelling of spending on fresh fruit and vegetables is that contrary to expectations, neural networks failed to outperform a linear regression model.

Résumé :
Usability testing of software products is of key importance nowadays. In order for usability testing to have the desired effect, the appropriate testing methodology must be chosen. Usability testing can be carried out using qualitative or quantitative methods. A widely used qualitative method today is the heuristic evaluation proposed by Jacob Nielsen. However, there are other testing methods such as cognitive walkthrough or collaborative testing (proposed by Josef Pavlicek and R. Bock). Although heuristic analysis has generally received a lot of attention in the current literature, it is important to put the other methods in the right light. These provide a significantly better view of the user’s passage through the interface under test. The methods better simulate the environment in which the final UI will operate. The user experience (UX) is then significantly better measurable if the participant goes through the test scenario in a cognitive (i.e., mental model-defined) way, rather than by mere heuristic evaluation. A significant milestone is then the cognitive-collaborative passage, where the collaborative element of the evaluators contributes to the evaluation of the solution.

Résumé :
The thermophysical properties of a commercially available Polyphenylene Sulphide (PPS)-carbon fiber composite material are experimentally characterized and used to validate application of the Nielsen thermal conductivity model to this category of polymer matrix composites. The PPS-fiber thermal conductivity was measured in the three orthogonal directions, using the laser flash thermal diffusivity method, and found to display significant anisotropy. Thermal conductivity predictions based on the Nielsen model, and using E-SEM measured values of fiber dimensions and fiber orientation and carbon fiber mass content determined from TGA analysis, were found to be within 5% of the corresponding measurements. The close agreement between predictions and measurements permitted the determination of the morphological influence of fiber material, volume content and orientation, and resin and fiber thermal conductivities, on thermal conductivity to be parametrically investigated and optimized for a given formulation. The impact of this optimization on the thermal performance of a PPS-fiber pin fin is described.

Résumé :
In this study, a numerical representative volume element (RVE) model was used to predict the mechanical properties of a Rice Husk Particulate (RHP)-Epoxy composite for use as an alternative material in non-critical applications. Seven different analytical models Counto, Ishai-Cohen, Halpin-Tsai, Nielsen, Nicolais, Modified Nicolais and Pukanszky were used as comparison tools for the numerical model. The mechanical properties estimated for 0%, 10% and 30% RHP-Epoxy composites using the numerical and analytical models are in general agreement with each other. Using the analytical models, it was calculated that an increase in volume percentage of RHP to 30% led to continual reduction in elastic Young’s modulus and ultimate tensile strength of the composite. The numerical RVE models also predicted a similar trend between filler volume percentage and material properties. Overall, the results of this study suggest that RHP can be used to reduce the composite raw material costs by replacing the more expensive polymer content with agricultural waste products with limited compromise to the composite’s mechanical properties.

Résumé :
The Forestry and Agriculture Sector Optimization Model with Greenhouse Gases (FASOMGHG) has historically relied on regional average costs of land conversion to simulate land use change across cropland, pasture, rangeland, and forestry. This assumption limits the accuracy of the land conversion estimates by not recognizing spatial heterogeneity in land quality and conversion costs. Using data from Nielsen et al. (2014), we obtained the afforestation cost per county, then estimated nonparametric regional marginal cost functions for land converting land to forestry. These afforestation costs were then incorporated into FASOMGHG. Three different assumptions for land moving into the forest sector were run; constant average conversion cost, static rising marginal costs and dynamic rising marginal cost, in order to assess the implications of alternative land conversion cost assumptions on key outcomes, such as projected forest area and cropland use, carbon sequestration, and forest product output.
