The total cross sections as well as the neutrino event rates are calculated in the neutral current neutrino scattering off40Ar and132Xe isotopes at neutrino energies (Ev<100 MeV). The individual contribution coming from coherent and incoherent channels is taking into account. An enhancement of the neutral current component is achieved via the coherent (0gs+→0gs+) channel which is dominant with respect to incoherent (0gs+→Jf) one. The response of the above isotopes as a supernova neutrino detection has been considered, assuming a two parameter Fermi-Dirac distribution for the supernova neutrino energy spectra. The calculated total cross sections are tested on a gaseous spherical TPC detector dedicated for supernova neutrino detection.

The method of fractional occupation probabilities of the orbits is adopted in order to obtain nuclear form factors to be used for reliable cross sections calculations of the dominant coherent neutrino-nucleus reaction channel. To this purpose, the multipole decomposition method of Donnelly-Walecka is employed. The response of the 48Ti nucleus in solar and Supernova neutrino detection is investigated through our realistic nuclear structure cross sections calculations, based on the solution of the BCS equations. The present results indicate that the momentum dependence of the nuclear form factors cannot be neglected from the cross section, especially in the energy region of Supernova neutrinos (or for neutrinos having higher energies), because differences of even orders of magnitude may occur.

Original cross-sections calculations for neutral current neutrino scattering on 40Ar isotope are performed in the context of the quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA) by utilizing realistic two-nucleon forces. The incoming neutrino energy range adopted, εν ≤ 100 MeV, covers the supernova neutrinos, the low-energy beta-beam-neutrinos and the pion-muon stopped neutrino-beams existing or planned to be conducted at future neutron spallation sources. Subsequently, are the original cross sections convoluted with various supernova neutrino-energy distributions such as the two-parameter Fermi-Dirac and the power law distributions. The folded cross sections are obtained for various values of the parameters of these neutrino energy distributions corresponding to different supernova scenarios. One of the main purposes of this work is to explore the response of the 40Ar isotope as supernova neutrino detector.

Using covariant methods we calculate the coherent forward amplitude for the exchange of a virtual photon between neutrinos having medium-induced electromagnetic vertices. Such a process can affect the important Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein (MSW) mechanism in media with large neutrino asymmetries. It can be considered as a finite temperature and density (FTD) version of a two-loop contribution which gives rise to non-universal (νι-dependent) radiative corrections to the forward scattering νν → νν. Assuming no inert neutrino species, we discuss the possible importance of this contribution to the MSW effect in a supernova core and in the early Universe with large but equal neutrino asymmetries.

In this work we perform calculations of the cross sections for neutral-current neutrino scattering off the 95,97Mo isotopes. Both the incoherent and coherent con- tributions to the cross sections are considered. The wave functions of the initial and final nuclear states are constructed in the context of the quasiparticle phonon model (MQPM). The response of the aformentioned nuclei to supernova neutrinos are computed by folding the obtained cross sections with a two-parameter Fermi-Dirac distribution.

Abstract Supernovae (SNe) are among the most energetic events in the universe still far from being fully understood. An early and prompt detection of neutrinos is a one-time opportunity for the realization of the first multi-messenger observation of these events. In this work, we present the prospects of detecting neutrinos produced before (pre-SN) and during a SN while running an advanced cryogenic detector. Recent advances in the cryogenic detector technique and the discovery of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering offer a wealth of opportunities in neutrino detection. The combination of the excellent energy resolution of this experimental technique, with the high cross section of this detection channel and its equal sensitivity to all neutrino flavors, enables the realization of highly sensitive neutrino telescopes of the size of a few tens of cm, as the newly proposed RES-NOVA experiment. We present a detailed study on the detection promptness of pre-SN and SN neutrino signals, with direct comparisons among different classes of test statistics. While the well-established Poisson test offers in general best performance under optimal conditions, the nonparametric Recursive Product of Spacing statistical test (RPS) is more robust for triggering astrophysical neutrino signals with no specific prior knowledge. Based on our statistical tests the RES-NOVA experiment is able to identify SN neutrino signals at a 15 kpc distance with 95% of success rate, and pre-SN signal as far as 450 pc with a pre-warn time of the order of 10 s. These results demonstrate the potential of RPS for the identification of neutrino signals and the physics reach of the RES-NOVA experiment.

Open neutrino physics issues require precision studies, both theoretical and experimental ones, and towards this aim coherent neutral current neutrino-nucleus scattering events are expected to be observed soon. In this work, we explore ν -nucleus processes from a nuclear theory point of view and obtain results with high confidence level based on accurate nuclear structure cross sections calculations. The present study explores the differential event rates as well as the total number of events expected to be measured by nuclear detectors, indicating measurable rates. We concentrate on the possibility of detecting supernova neutrinos by using massive detectors like those of the GERDA and SuperCDMS dark matter experiments and at spallation neutron source facilities (at Oak Ridge National Lab) by the COHERENT experiment.

Abstract A core-collapse supernova (CCSN) provides a unique astrophysical site for studying neutrino–matter interactions. Prior to the shock-breakout neutrino burst during the collapse of the iron core, a preshock ν e burst arises from the electron capture of nuclei and it is sensitive to the low-energy coherent elastic neutrino–nucleus scattering (CEνNS) which dominates the neutrino opacity. Since the CEνNS depends strongly on nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSIs), which are completely beyond the standard model and yet to be determined, the detection of the preshock burst thus provides a clean way to extract the NSI information. Within the spherically symmetric general-relativistic hydrodynamic simulation for the CCSN, we investigate the NSI effects on the preshock burst. We find that the NSI can maximally enhance the peak luminosity of the preshock burst almost by a factor of three, reaching a value comparable to that of the shock-breakout burst. Future detection of the preshock burst will have critical implications on astrophysics, neutrino physics, and physics beyond the standard model.

Abstract Neutrinos from supernova (SN) bursts can give rise to detectable number of nuclear recoil (NR) events through the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEυNS) process in large scale liquid xenon detectors designed for direct dark matter search, depending on the SN progenitor mass and distance. Here we show that in addition to the direct NR events due to CEvNS process, the SN neutrinos can give rise to additional nuclear recoils due to the elastic scattering of neutrons produced through inelastic interaction of the neutrinos with the xenon nuclei. We find that the contribution of the supernova neutrino-induced neutrons (υIn) can significantly modify the total xenon NR spectrum at large recoil energies compared to that expected from the CEυNS process alone. Moreover, for recoil energies ≳ 20 keV, dominant contribution is obtained from the (υIn) events. We numerically calculate the observable S1 and S2 signals due to both CEvNS and vIn processes for a typical liquid xenon based detector, accounting for the multiple scattering effects of the neutrons in the case of υIn, and find that sufficiently large signal events, those with S1≳50 photo-electrons (PE) and S2≳2300 PE, come mainly from the υIn scatterings.

There is increasing evidence that the majority of dark matter is non-baryonic. Principal candidates are weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPS), axions, and neutrinos. There has been increasing effort on sensitive WIMP searches, motivated in particular by supersymmetry theory, which predicts a stable neutral particle in the mass range 10-1000 GeV. Interactions of these with normal matter would produce low energy nuclear recoils which could be observed by underground detectors capable of discriminating these from background. Current experimental progress is summarised, together with plans for more sensitive experiments. These include gaseous detectors with directional sensitivity, offering the prospect of a ‘dark matter telescope’ which would provide information on the dark matter velocity distribution. Axions could be detected by conversion to microwave photons, and experimental sensitivity is approaching the theoretically-required levels. Relic neutrinos could also form a component of the dark matter if any has a cosmologically significant mass, and the latter could be checked with a new detector able to detect the higher neutrino flavours from a Galactic supernova burst. More distant future possibilities are outlined for direct detection of relic neutrinos by coherent scattering.

The possibility of constraining supernova model parameters with an observation is also considered, like the chance of observing coherent scattering with a stopped pion neutrino source.
