The purpose of this thesis is to explore implementation of decision support on the Internet. In particular it discusses four traditional decision making models. The information collected from these models will be applied to the creation of an Internet-based DSS. These models are the decision making model, problem solving model, creative thinking model, and the negotiation model. From an implementation point of view, this thesis develops a prototype decision support system for negotiation using Java. Realization of the prototype suggests that a decision support system (DSS) can be implemented using Java provided the DSS meets certain design parameters.

Résumé :
Dissertation to obtain the Master degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Specialized and diversified global markets are facing a competitiveness that keeps pushing enterprises to abandon their traditional product centrism, where basically it is enough to concentrate their efforts in very narrow specialization fields and change their methods of work relying on networks of other providers that are able to fulfill their needs towards the development of complete solutions. These new methods of work, regarding the rapid change in markets and business organizations, requires new interoperability demands and complexity levels, from connection and syntax-oriented exchanges to semantic and model-oriented knowledge, which becomes very difficult for enterprises to cope with the pace of change. This dissertation proposes the implementation of a framework, based on agents and rules, to achieve solid and stable integration of solutions, via the use of a strong and formal negotiation mechanism, which will be the basis for increasing the enterprise interoperability in the supply chain for the development of solutions.

Résumé :
A Negotiation Support System (NSS) is a system consisting of hardware, software, people, and procedures that assists the individual negotiator, mediator, or researcher; and provides a solution or facilitates the process of negotiation. NSS have previously been designed around modeling and simulation, expert systems, and other techniques. However, negotiation can be considered a group process involving two or more teams with communication routed through the group leaders. Electronic Meeting Systems (EMS) provide a model for the use of computers during group processes. EMS provides a research model and a framework for the development of software tools. The framework specifies that a computer-based meeting system consists of the group, the task, and the context and finally the EMS itself. MEDIANSS and its successor GroupSystems/Mediation (GS/M) were tested in two contract negotiations totaling almost 90 hours over 23 sessions. The negotiators generally approved of the GS/M tools and used them: the negotiators spent 19% to 24% of their time using computers. Both negotiations concluded successfully. The major accomplishment of GS/M was its assistance in the secretarial function of the talks. The drafts of the contracts were finalized faster than typically expected.

Résumé :
It is well established that one of the key contributing factors to the growth of countries’ economies is the existence of appropriate economic and social infrastructures. The setup of these infrastructures and their operation or delivery of public services associated with them have proved to be a costly and often unaffordable business for most governments. Therefore, private sector participation in the delivery of public services has been opted for by governments under Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). Additional reasons for the public sector to choose a PPP framework to deliver public services include the public sector representatives’ lack of sufficient technical knowledge and specifications required by most projects; the required amount of investment to implement such projects is too high to be affordable by the public sector alone; the increasing difficulties of predicting and controlling the uncertainties that typically govern the phases of such projects including the level of actual demand for the related services by the time the project is operational; the level of bureaucracy in the public sector and its implications on the time frame of decision-making processes; the relatively low efficiency in project execution by the public sector; and most importantly the fact that, in practice, these difficulties are often better managed by the private sector who seem to possess both the financial and the executive capabilities to undertake such projects Currently, there is a gap in the game theory literature on modelling PPP related decisions and issues. This thesis contributes to reducing such gap by proposing three novel and practice-oriented game theoretical models along with algorithms for solving them, namely an ordinal game for the shortlisting of potential private sector partners; two non-cooperative dynamic games for negotiation with shortlisted private sector partners and selection of private sector partner to award the PPP contract to; and a non-cooperative dynamic game for financial renegotiation post-PPP contract award. In sum, each novel game addresses an important problem faced by the private sector during the typical stages of the life cycle of PPPs, namely private sector partner selection at the tendering stage; negotiation between the public sector and shortlisted bidders to select the candidate to whom to award a PPP contract to at the post-tendering stage; and financial re-negotiation between the public sector and the selected private sector partner at the post-contract award stage.

The purpose of this thesis is to propose and demonstrate a new negotiation and argumentation medium. This medium will take advantage of the latest in web technologies while conducting a detailed analysis and design of a prototype web based decision support system to support on-line argumentation, claims, and team decisions. The information obtained from the application will be stored in an ODBC database, to be used as part of the organizational memory. Organization memory will significantly enhance an organizations ability to utilize historical data in conjunction with current decision making requirements. The findings in this study strongly support the strengths of the action-resource based argumentation system (ARBAS) model and indicate that future research and application development would significantly advance the fields of web-based negotiation and argumentation. Résumé :
Implementing an e-market for limited supply perishable asset (LiSPA) products is a problem at the intersection of online purchasing and distributed decision support systems (DistDSS). In this dissertation, we introduce and define LiSPA products, provide real-world examples, develop a framework for a distributed system to implement an e-market for LiSPA products, and provide proof-of-concept for the two major components of the framework. The DistDSS framework requires customers to instantiate agents that learn their preferences and evaluate products on their behalf. Accurately eliciting and modeling customer preferences in a quick and easy manner is a major hurdle for implementing this agent-based system. A methodology is developed for this problem using conjoint analysis and neural networks. The framework also contains a model component that is addressed in this work. The model component is presented as a mediator of customer negotiation that uses the agent-based preference models mentioned above and employs a linear programming model to maximize overall satisfaction of the total market.

Résumé :
To implement green supply chain, a company has to consider sustainability impacts in assessing potential suppliers. Thereby, the supplier evaluation and selection criteria would include various key performance indicators such as price, quality, delivery, as well as environmental and corporate social responsibility aspects. Researchers have proposed numerous multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) approaches for evaluating the multiple conflicting criteria in supplier selection. However, most of the existing approaches have ignored some important issues in business environment such as supplier qualification, supplier autonomy, negotiation between manufacturer and supplier, etc. In this thesis, a multi-agent system (MAS) is proposed for supplier selection in green supply chain. It comprises two types of autonomous agents, namely, buyer agent and seller agents, to represent the interests of manufacturer and suppliers, respectively. The proposed MAS presents three prominent features. First, the proposed supplier selection criteria incorporate the conventional, environmental and social aspects in the supplier selection process. The criteria are classified into negotiable and non-negotiable criteria. Initially, all criteria are included to evaluate and rank all the candidate suppliers. Subsequently, the top-ranked candidates are invited to participate in the bargaining process. In this regard, the negotiable criteria are used for assessing the quality of an offer, while the non-negotiable criteria, i.e. environmental and social criteria, influence the manufacturer’s negotiation attitude to candidate suppliers. The classification enables the manufacturer to fully utilize the performance values of all criteria. Secondly, supplier selection is implemented in a two-stage methodology. The TOPSIS method is devised in the first stage to shortlist some suitable candidate suppliers for entering negotiation in the next stage. In the second stage, the agent-based negotiation process is adopted for selecting the final supplier. Representing the manufacturer and the shortlisted suppliers respectively, the buyer and seller agents bargain on a number of negotiable issues in the multi-round negotiation. A multi-issue and multilateral agent interaction protocol, which is an extension of the contract net protocol, is implemented in the MAS. Accordingly, the buyer agent coordinates with the seller agents to exchange offers and counteroffers. Thirdly, a novel preference-based negotiation strategy is used to govern the behavior of agents during negotiation. A heuristics model with the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm and Adaptive Penalty Function has been designed and implemented to realize the proposed negotiation strategy. The strategy guides the autonomous agents to narrow down the discrepancies in the values of the negotiable criteria (price, delivery days, contract length) in their offers, and simultaneously search a mutually beneficial and acceptable agreement. The negotiation payoffs and negotiation time are improved. Experimental results indicate that the proposed agent-based model could help the manufacturer to identify the most appropriate supplier and improve the quality of final agreement. In addition, the model successfully integrates supplier qualification and automated negotiation, and promotes supplier autonomy in the supplier selection process.

Button, Kirsty Allen. « Household economies of low-income, African female-headed households in Khayelitsha : intergenerational support, negotiation and conflict ». Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/22841.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Low-income, African female-headed households represent a large segment of households in South Africa. Despite this, little is known about how financial and non-financial resources are provided, controlled and used within these households. Less is known about how these dynamics shape intergenerational relationships and positions of power within female-headed households. This thesis aims to contribute to a better understanding of these issues by examining how the household economies of fourteen low-income, African female-headed households in Khayelitsha operated on a day-to-day basis. It also sought to understand how two generations of household members experienced these practices. Through the collection and analysis of qualitative data, this thesis shows that the households were sites of support as household members relied on each other for various forms of support. However, many of the female household heads bore the greatest responsibility for the physical and financial maintenance of their households. Furthermore, the findings build upon existing understandings of low-income, multi-generational households as also being sites of negotiation and contestation. The unequal burden of care experienced by the older women and the patterns of support provided by other household members was often the outcome of intergenerational negotiation. The participants' experiences of these dynamics shed light on the shifting positions of power within their households. The older women struggled to maintain their authority and negotiate for financial and practical assistance from their younger household members. As a result, the provision of support and perceptions about their interpersonal relationships were framed by experiences of intergenerational conflict and feelings of ambivalence. The findings highlight experiences of multi-generational family life and inequality in a context where feelings of obligation, broader socio-economic conditions and the nature of state support may constrain how the participants were able to provide support and handle instances of intergenerational conflict.

Harrington, J. « An intelligent negotiation based framework to support concurrent engineering principles in the engineering design of process plant ». Thesis, Cranfield University, 1996. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/4667.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The traditional approach to the engineering design of process plant is highly sequential with decisions made early in the design phase having a large knock on effect to downstream design processes. A lack of consideration to downstream concerns will either result in design re-work or compromise. Concurrent engineering has been proposed as a design method for resolving the problems inherent in the sequential design process by bringing the different engineering disciplines together at key decision points in the design process, thereby preventing design problems before they occur. Computational support for concurrent engineering aims to develop tools to help team members in sharing knowledge and keep track of the others' needs, constraints, decisions and assumptions [Cutkosky, et al. 93]. Such systems would enable engineering disciplines from each of the design life-cycle stages to communicate and review design strategy. As a group they would be able to explore design alternatives in search of a good solution [Talukdar, Fenves 89]. Knowledge based systems can support the engineering design process by providing advice that accounts for the global concerns. It is argued that such a system should be distributed, due to the problems in maintaining a single large knowledge base, and computational power required to operate a single system. However, wherever expertise is distributed, conflict exists that has to be resolved. The aims of this research are to identify the needs of a computational support environment to aid concurrent engineering design, and to develop a framework to enable disparate design systems to cooperate and produce designs acceptable from the global viewpoint. The 'needs' were identified from a study of the engineering design process, and a detailed analysis into the design and selection of pumping systems to provide a rich example of the problems faced in a specific design process. Cooperation is achieved through 'Negotiation', which resolves conflicts between the various objectives involved in design and is a central theme of this research. Through the provision of a framework to support negotiation the aim is to provide the basis on which individual design programs can cooperate to produce rational designs from a global perspective, thereby bringing life cycle design advice to the earlier design stages.

Résumé :
Women in the sex industry struggle with emotional turmoil, drug and alcohol addiction, poverty, and spiritual disillusionment. Their lived experiences as stigmatized individuals engender feelings of powerlessness, which inhibits their attempts to leave the sex industry. This study illuminates how personal narratives develop throughout the process of shedding stigmatized identities and how mutual support functions as a tool in life transformation. Social identity theory and feminist standpoint theory are used as theoretical frameworks of this research, with each theory adding nuanced understanding to life transformations of female former sex workers. Results indicate that women in the sex industry share common narratives that reveal experiences of a "Living Hell", transitional language, and ultimate alignment with traditional norms. Implications of SIT and FST reveal the role of feminist organizations as possible patriarchal entities and adherence to stereotypical masculine ideology as an anchoring factor in continued sex work.

The complexity of bidding process, the equality principle and the attempt to obtain the most advantageous bid have led the government to adopt a selection supplier approach, in which the price is the only issue considered. In order to support this process, this thesis proposes a supplier selection model based on the Brazilian bidding law, which includes a negotiation stage on multiple issues. The model organizes the public bidding process in a flow of activities: (i) bids reception; (ii) negotiation stage; and (iii) approval and award of bids. The negotiation stage is developed as a model to support multi-bilateral and multi-issue negotiations, whose adopted strategy ensures joint maximum gains for the parties involved. The proposed model is illustrated through its application for a bidding process already concluded. This illustration showed that the model aggregates more dynamic to the bidding law since the suppliers bids are ranges of values in different issues instead of a single bid in the price issue only. It was verified that the proposal can be used to support suppliers selection processes in private sector companies.

Résumé :
Abstract This thesis contributes to the field of collaborative information systems and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). It extends the notion of technological support for design activities "in use" beyond providing the flexibility to tailor collaborative software, to provide means to support the appropriation process of these tools in their application fields. Two long-term studies on the evolution of usages of collaborative software in a German authority and in a network of freelancers in the field of consulting form the foundation of this work. Based on the experience there, it was possible to identify user activities that drive the appropriation process and to establish a perspective on the appropriation of a Groupware as a social process. Appropriation can be described as a collaborative effort of end users, who perform "appropriation activities" to make sense of the software in their work context. Besides activities to configure the software to fit into the technological, organisational and individual work context of the users ('Tailoring'), there is a larger area of technology-related communication, demonstration and negotiation activities aimed at establishing a shared understanding of how a software artefact works and what it can contribute to the shared work context. The mutual shaping of the technology and organisational contexts resemble an ongoing design process that end users perform largely without any involvement of professional developers. This perspective is the guiding line for developing means for "Appropriation Support", i.e., means to support the appropriation activities that end users perform. To inform the design of appropriation support measures and functions, current approaches that capture the collaborative dimensions of tailoring, and the necessities of 'discourse ergonomics' for technology-related online communication are explored. The trend to work with a tool 'infrastructure' instead of monolithic Groupware tools is a complicating yet important secondary consideration here, since it demonstrates the necessity to offer support 'beyond one tool' to support a use-oriented perspective on appropriation. The resulting idea of 'Use Discourse Environments' as a main concept for appropriation support which captures the activities of communication, demonstration and negotiation as well as the activity of tailoring (where possible) was implemented and evaluated in two prototypes that refer to the application fields of the initial studies. The idea of integrating online discourse, tool representations and tailoring facilities served as a guideline for the use discourse both in an event notification service as well as in the 'Online Future Workshop' that addressed a shared inter-organisational software development infrastructure. Based on the evaluations, design recommendations for appropriation support are made, and the problematic nature of appropriation activities as 'infrastructural work' versus the 'productive work' that end users consider their main area of work is addressed. The thesis concludes with a vision of collaborative software tools that do not only provide their original services, but also address end users as a 'virtual community of technology practice'.

Wondering about the increasing use of the word « mediation », I reviewed some of the most common practices referring to this word which was, in some cases, misused. On this basis, I strived to draw the outline of a concept in need of definition. In doing so, I identified two characteristics of mediation, namely the triangularity and the non-directivity, as well as its two prerequisites, i.e. the consent of the participants and the recognition of the mediator. Moreover, I noted that mediation does not apply only to situations of conflict and that its stake is not exclusively emotional. It could be material, leading to a negotiating mediation. Crossing these two variables, I then propose a typology of mediation practices. In a second part of my thesis, I set up a phenomenological analysis of mediation, using video recordings of role playing. This analysis led me to broaden my own perspective, from a mediation as « mediator’s action » to a more complex scenario that I called « mediative situation », where the mediator influences the participants and is in turn influenced by them. This situation, far from being restricted to an established practice, is indeed a social and frequent phenomenon. The confidence the participants have in the mediator, the role they give him/her as a “secure base” and as an alternative to the face to face situation, and his function in supporting communication, lay the basic condition of the mediative situation, a long way ahead of mediations techniques

Résumé :
Changing philosophies affect change in how people with disability are supported. In Australia, paid workers provide most formal services in people’s homes. However, the experience of support from the perspective of those accessing services is concealed. This qualitative research analysed accounts of people with intellectual disability to reveal their experiences of support. Contrasting dominant social narratives of dependence, ‘being a person of value’ was a central theme in the perception and presentation of self in support relationships. These findings call for support agencies to offer greater respect, person-centredness, choice and control to people with intellectual disability.

Résumé :
"No (person) is an island" (Donne J, 1975, p. 87). The importance of social support in the lives of human beings is evident and for immigrant adolescents the role of social networks is important to facilitate their adjustment within the majority culture and to navigate their identity within spaces of belonging.
This study aims to describe how Filipino immigrant adolescents in Cote-des-Neiges, a district in Montreal, organize social support and how this relates to their mental health. This research is a mixed design with a sequential strategy. Firstly, data about social support from an epidemiological survey of Filipino youth are analyzed. Secondly, ethnographic research elaborates the findings from the quantitative part.
The results suggest that social networks play a dual role of both support and conflict for the adolescents and that there is a complex interplay between migratory trajectory and the strategies for organizing social support and negotiating spaces of belonging.

Résumé :
This thesis makes an original contribution to the study of online support on domestic violence (often referred to as online support communities/groups) through a discursive feminist perspective. Whilst the few previous studies on the topic are limited in scope, this is the first to adopt a mixed methods approach, exploring the topic through three sets of data from one online support forum on domestic violence: qualitative textual analysis of threads (n=215); an online survey (n=70); and two interviews with the manager of the forum and the moderator. The thesis aims to explore the role of an online support forum for women in the process of ending violence in their lives. Six aspects of online support are explored: forum-host’s goals, history and development of the forum; the experience of online support from the perspective of its members; exploring the themes and topics dealt with in the forum; how forum users perceive the impact and relevance of these themes; how members construct emotions, violence, victims and perpetrators in written postings; and how members use violence discourse in support processes. The analysis of these aspects provides a new body of evidence regarding the possibilities of online support groups. First, interviews with the forum hosts give a unique insight to the challenges with hosting the forum, pursuing moderation, and the limits and possibilities with using a public anonymous space. Second, through the survey, a sample of forum-members describes an eclectic form of mutual support, the experience of moderator’s work, and the interaction with other members. The forum's impact on participants’ understanding of violence, help-seeking and decision-making is measured. Third, the analysis of threads demonstrates in-depth members’ reflexive work (Giddens, 1991) in the forum, which comprehends the whole processes of ending violence, and shows how members use violence discourse to understand violence, manage emotions and encourage specific choices and actions. A discursive theoretical perspective explicates how support processes are enacted within and according to a normative practice. The findings suggest previously overlooked issues, in particular with regard to flexible long-term support for women with experiences of domestic violence (Kelly et al, 2014).

Résumé :
This study explores the effect of statements by leaders on domestic support for negotiations. It distinguishes between two types of statements: those that humanise the out-group, and those that apologise for past wrongdoings. The theoretical argument is threefold. First, it is proposed that humanising statements can counter the narratives that delegitimise negotiations with outgroups and, thereby, increase support for negotiations. Second, it is argued that apologies by leaders activate aversion to collective guilt and therefore diminish support for negotiations. Third, it is theorised that the effect of statements is conditioned by individual-level adherence to beliefs that justify continued conflict (‘conflict-supporting narratives’). Specifically, the positive effect of humanising statements is expected to be driven primarily by low adherers of conflict-supporting narratives, whereas the negative effect of apologies is driven primarily by high adherers of conflict-supporting narratives. The findings, based on an online survey experiment conducted in the United States, support the hypothesis that apologies by in-group leaders decrease domestic support for negotiations and that this effect is driven by high adherers of conflict-supporting narratives. In contrast, humanising statements are found to have a null influence on support for negotiations, regardless of the level of adherence to conflict-supporting narratives.

Good management of shared spaces requires taking into account the multiplicity of stakeholders who each have their own values and objectives. It is subject to two recurring problems. The first is the lack of consensus, the second is a consensus on an ineffective solution in its response to the problems raised. Combining the participatory aspect with technical assistance makes it possible to address both aspects. It is possible both to help the actors in the decision-making process, while at the same time directing their reasoning towards a coherent result. In order to provide technical assistance, we choose to use the theory of viability, which proposes to users to define a set of constraints grouping the interests and objectives of each. This method has two advantages. On the one hand, it is no longer necessary to aggregate or prioritise the criteria. On the other hand, viability allows an infinite time horizon to be taken into account, implying respect for intergenerational equity. Moreover, we draw inspiration from the techniques used for the design of serious games in order to give an educational and awareness-raising aspect to our tool for participatory management. This thesis work focuses on the design, development and impact study of a tool for participatory management based on viability theory. We have implemented a prototype of an IT assistant that gives concrete form to the ideas proposed in the thesis. Then we conducted a first experimentation of its use in order to analyse its interest and the benefits brought to decision making and negotiation. This evaluation allowed us to assess the influence of this tool from the point of view of decision support, negotiation support and awareness of the issues raised by resource sharing. An application inspired by the case of Brazilian extractive reservation allowed us to illustrate this approach

Résumé :
[Truncated abstract] This thesis examines the social and legal dynamics of support as it operated around women charged before the criminal courts in the eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century metropolis. It considers the nature and implications of the support made available to, or withheld from, female defendants by individuals to whom they were in some way connected. To this end, it explores the nuances of testimony offered by witnesses and defendants in an attempt to better understand the extent and effect of the support that could be negotiated by and from a range of groups, including family members, fellow household residents, neighbours and wider community members. How narratives were framed in either sympathetic or condemnatory terms was indicative of broader social attitudes and expectations regarding women and crime as well as of women's own relationships to households and neighbourhood. To the extent that this thesis aims to interrogate negotiations of support, it adopts legal narratives as a window through which to gain an insight into the social interactions and mediation of interpersonal relationships by eighteenth-century London women. The printed accounts of trials conducted at the Old Bailey and legal documents from the London and Middlesex Sessions records form the basis of the source material that contributed towards this study. These records provide contemporary narratives in which participants described their involvement in the legal system and articulated their relationships to events and to each other. As a result, they are invaluable for the wealth of qualitative detail they contain. These legal documents have also been complemented by other contemporary sources including newspaper reports and printed pamphlet literature. ... This thesis concludes first that neighbours and fellow household residents were usually in the strongest position to affect the outcome of criminal cases, either by offering assistance or disclosing incriminating information. The importance of household and neighbours rather than kin was closely tied to the domestic context in which many female crimes took place, and the 'insider knowledge' that was gained by living in close proximity to one another. However, if and when women retained links to family and kin who lived within travelling distance, they remained an important source of support. Secondly, the thesis identifies the detection and prosecution of crime as a gendered experience; contemporary social expectations about gender influenced both legal processes and the shaping of witness accounts. Thirdly, in its examination of local responses to female crime, the thesis supports the theory that a notable shift in sentiment towards female nature and legal culpability occurred during this period, which in turn affected the support offered to female defendants. Overall, the thesis demonstrates the paramount importance of witness testimony in articulating the circumstances surrounding female crimes, and the complex negotiations of interpersonal relationships which influenced how this evidence would be contextualised as supportive or not when it was delivered.

Résumé :
E-learning is increasingly adopted to support face-to-face classroom-based learning or implemented as a complete standalone learning system. Its inherent adaptable nature and ability to provide learning anywhere, everywhere and anytime makes it a versatile tool for access to basic, professional and higher education. This research proposes and develops an adaptable e-learning approach, focusing on the learner's requirement specification and negotiation of course with multiple providers to improve online learning. This addresses issues of inflexible learning model, narrow coverage of subject domains in existing systems and ineffective use of educational resources, using design research methodology (DRM). The proposed Intelligent Learning approach provides learning support by applying collaborative and deliberative capabilities of software agents to e-learning systems. Designated learning support agents negotiate with providers on behalf of the learner for courses, matching specified requirements. This is achieved through agent negotiation strategies, devising dynamic learning plans (DPLAN) and online learning contract (or EContract) between the system and a range of providers, to harness the changing needs of the learner, hence, providing an Adaptive Agent Learner Plan (ADALP) approach. It develops and applies a 'Basic Requirements Learning' model, addressing specific learning objectives, supported by a two way evaluation process that enforces learning flexibility, empowering learners and accommodating a wide spectrum of learning needs. Unlike traditional Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS), learning objectives are not fixed and are constituted dynamically from learner specifications. The ADALP approach provides multiple provider support options, generating learner feedback for goal oriented, but flexible learning. This deviates from the traditional 'top-down' approach, where instructors and designers create fixed models of different categories of learners and their needs. The prototype of multi-agent system (MAS) demonstrates contributions of the approach, applying Multi-issue-Negotiation and Contracting Courses with Multiple Providers; devising dynamic personalised learning plans and learning commitment (or e-contracts) between learners and providers. It implements designated agents which generate tasks and sub-tasks corresponding to the learners' goals and objectives; 'biding' for learning and tutoring resources from multiple providers to deliver on the derived tasks. Personalised learning plan aligned with online learning contract is generated for each learner based on the specified requirements and learning goals, as a result. It is argued that the ADALP approach empowers learners and improves on similar approaches, in comparison to existing adaptive learning systems.

Résumé :
Thesis advisor: Anderson J. Franklin
Referencing Ralph Waldo Ellison's 1952 novel Invisible Man, psychologist Anderson J. Franklin has proposed that the "invisibility" detailed in Ellison's work--the experience of having one's true sense of self rendered invisible by racial stereotypes--is not only a very real experience encountered by Black men in contemporary society, but one that can serve to confound their relationships and personal sense of agency. To better understand the experience of invisibility, the current study utilizes a multiple-case, case study approach to analyze several videotaped sessions of a therapeutic support group organized specifically to address race-related stressors in the lives of the Black male participants. The transcripts of each session are analyzed using Critical Discourse Analysis, an analytical approach that investigates actors' language, its implicit meanings and assumptions, and the manner in which it reflects power differentials operative in society. The findings of the study reveal the presence of an intra-racial, as well as an internalized form of invisibility not currently found in the literature pertaining to Franklin's theory of invisibility. Further, the current study expands our understanding of how invisibility is experienced by Black men by identifying a variety of strategies used by members of the support group to counter those experiences and become "seen." Finally, the fact that the group was largely comprised of college-educated, professional Black men yields valuable insights regarding the race-related, emotional functioning of an infrequently studied population. The study's findings are discussed in terms of their implications for group as well as individual mental health service delivery for Black men

The objective of our doctoral research is to question the construction of collective work between school and non-school actors in order to better understand the form of organization that a collective can take in a context, that of French school inclusion. Collective work is prescribed by the educational institution, but the activity is never simple execution. The interest is thus to question the form of organization of the collective from the analysis of the accompanying work activity of teachers and support staff, called support work. An epistemological construction space which combines the multidisciplinary analysis of work situations, the clinic of activity and ergonomics is built for this, and it is based on the concept of normativity. Five situations of inclusion of children and adolescents with disabilities that occur at different levels of French education are analyzed, and we consider each of these five situations of inclusion as a case study. We are investigating during our field investigation, by building an original methodological framework, their way of collectively building an inclusion in a context that is always unique, that of the class and the school establishment. The challenge is to identify a possible organizer of their support activity which allows them to make the collective a resource to build effective inclusion from their point of view. The results of our research help to better understand the support activity of teachers and support staff, and in particular the hidden dimensions of their activity. This knowledge is then used to (re) think about organizing an inclusive collective and training teachers in inclusion

Résumé :
A significant new direction in Australian income support policy was introduced in 2002. Known as Australians Working Together, this development changed the basis of social security entitlement for parents. Throughout most of the twentieth century, low-income sole mothers, and later sole fathers and parents in couple families, could claim income support throughout most of their children’s school years. The primary grounds for their entitlement were low income and parenting responsibilities. Australians Working Together introduced compulsory employment-oriented activities to Parenting Payment entitlement for parents whose youngest child had turned 13. This thesis investigates mothers’ experience of this new welfare system. Using Dorothy Smith’s ‘everyday life’ approach to research, it draws upon qualitative and quantitative methods to analyse Australians Working Together. The research is grounded in a longitudinal interview survey of Australian mothers of teenage children who were subject to these changes. The analysis moves from their experience outwards through the four levels of analysis in Williams and Popay’s welfare research framework. The thesis examines mothers’ day-to-day worlds, the opportunities and constraints they navigate, the policies and institutions which shape their opportunities, the political framing of those policies, and wider social and economic transformations. In their negotiation of the social security system, mothers are striving for recognition of autonomy and care. They want their capacity to determine for themselves how to live their lives to be acknowledged. They would like the social contributions they make through employment, education and voluntary work to be recognised. They struggle for their unpaid work caring for their families to be valued. They wish that they had sufficient material resources to care well for their families. The thesis develops a theoretical framework to examine these struggles drawing on the work of Honneth, Fraser, Lister, Sennett, Fisher and Tronto, Daly and Lewis. This multi-level, everyday life analysis reveals the possibility of reframing the social security system around mutual respect.

Résumé :
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Résumé :
African immigrant women and refugee women face disproportionate reproductive health risks and adverse outcomes compared with the Canadian population. The diversity of African women and complexity of the migration process suggest the need for contextualized knowledge to better understand these challenges. I sought such knowledge through the use of the theoretical frameworks of place and intersectionality. These frameworks draw attention to the multi-level mixture of social relations in given contexts and how they create opportunities and oppression. The specific purpose of this research was to: a) explore how the reproductive health experiences of African immigrant and refugee women were shaped by the unique context of given places; b) consider how these women actively negotiated and constructed place in their search for reproductive health information, services, and support. A multiple case study was used to explore the reproductive health experiences of African immigrant and refugee women in three different areas of Ottawa, Ontario. These areas provided different local contexts (e.g., history, socioeconomic profile, proximity to downtown). In each area, data was collected through interviews with African immigrant and refugee women, interviews and focus groups with reproductive health service providers, and mapping of available services. In total, 19 immigrant and refugee women and 23 service providers participated in this study. The findings showed that African immigrant and refugee women’s reproductive health experiences were much more complicated than simple interaction with neighbourhood services. Their varied social positions in Canadian society were highly relevant. In addition, social networks based in places outside of the system (e.g., private homes, religious institutions) were environments in which they were comfortable and sought support for their reproductive health needs. Recommendations based on these findings include the need to engage communities and explore the delivery of information and services outside of the traditional places employed by the Canadian health care system.

Résumé :
Many civil wars are illustrative of wider international tensions and connections that transcend state borders. States often intervene to influence the trajectory and outcome of civil conflicts by providing external support to warring parties. This assistance ranges from direct military intervention to the provision of weapons, training, funds, safe havens, intelligence, logistics and other critical resources. This dissertation contains four individual essays that each seeks to advance our knowledge of state support to rebel movements. The first essays (I and II) add to our understanding of how external state support influences conflict dynamics while the latter (III and IV) begin to unpack the political decision-making process behind decisions that alter the original support commitment. Essay I evaluates whether state support to rebels increases the probability of civil war negotiations being initiated. The findings question a widespread belief among policymakers that support can foster negotiations. Essay II explores if external support influences the risk of conflict recurrence. It finds that state support to rebels can increase the risk of conflict recurrence in the short-term while there is no equivalent effect of support provided to governments. Essay III is the first global analysis of support termination and it thereby opens up an entirely new research field. The results suggest that the causes related to the initiation of support and its termination are largely distinct while the transition from the Cold War and the absence of ethnic kinship ties offer some insights into when states are more likely to terminate support. Essay IV unpacks the political decision-making process of the United States’ support to the armed opposition in Nicaragua in the 1980s and in Syria in the 2010s. The results indicate that adverse feedback functions as a trigger for increasing previous commitments as long as policy failure can be attributed to external actors, while reduced support is often a result of attributing failure to the state sponsor’s own actions. Taken together, the essays make significant contributions to advance our understanding of biased third-party interventions, conflict recurrence, civil war negotiations, foreign policy decision-making and state sponsorship of terrorism.

It is getting more important to have quick response during the negotiation process due to the very competitive environment. However, in the negotiation process, it is quite often that negotiators do not have enough time to understand the negotiation issue, the available alternatives and their priorities. In addition, negotiators may also have difficulties to catch path of interactions between negotiators, i.e. negotiation dance. These problems may have negative impact on the negotiation results or even break the negotiation. The goal of this research is to help negotiators with clearer picture about the negotiation issues and the interactions between negotiators in order to have better negotiation decisions during the negotiation process. First, the challenges in understanding the negotiation issues and the interactions between negotiators are identified. Then, based on the identified challenges, five negotiation decision support agents are designed. The algorithm of each agent is proposed too. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed agents, prototypes of two agents have been developed and evaluated through an experiment. The result is positive.
