Résumé :
As the silicon photonics field matures and a data-hungry future looms ahead, new technologies are required to keep up pace with the increase in capacity demand. In this paper, we review current developments in the near-IR and mid-IR group IV photonic modulators that show promising performance. We analyse recent trends in optical and electrical co-integration of modulators and drivers enabling modulation data rates of 112 GBaud in the near infrared. We then describe new developments in short wave infrared spectrum modulators such as employing more spectrally efficient PAM-4 coding schemes for modulations up to 40 GBaud. Finally, we review recent results at the mid infrared spectrum and application of the thermo-optic effect for modulation as well as the emergence of new platforms based on germanium to tackle the challenges of modulating light in the long wave infrared spectrum up to 10.7 μm with data rates of 225 MBaud.

Résumé :
Abstract We present a stereo-multispectral microscope equipped with an additional illumination unit allowing further narrow-band illumination in the spectral range of 400n.m up to 800nm. The combination of the normal microscope illumination with the multispectral light unit allows different illumination modalities to be realized, which enables intraoperative spectral tissue analysis with direct visualization. Two illumination methods were tested in two cholesteatoma surgeries. In addition, two cholesteatom samples were illuminated and analyzed ex vivo. Cholesteatoma showed :fluorescent characteristics in our ex vivo analysis. This behavior could be used intraoperatively using a combination of white light and strong near-UV to blue illumination to highlight cholesteatoma tissue in the microscopic image. Thus, the visual differentiability of different tissue types can be improved and the clinical decision-making process can be accelerated.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In this thesis, we present our original theoretical investigations of SiC microstruc-tures for extreme light control in the Reststrahlen band of Silicon Carbide (SiC), that occurs in the Mid-IR spectral regime. In this frequency regime, most of the light will be reflected from bulk SiC, due to the extreme permittivity response of SiC. However, we demonstrate that it is possible to control light to be absorbed or ultra refracted within the microstructures constructed from SiC in the Reststrahlen band of SiC. In particular, we show that this high reflective behaviour of SiC can be over-come via different mechanisms: by achieving a Photonic Crystal (PC) band-edge reflectionless condition in a SiC terminated one-dimensional (1D)-PC, by tailoring the effective phonon-polariton gap in SiC-based effective metamaterials, or by cou-pling to cavity modes in SiC structures made of rectangular-cross-section pillars. Furthermore, we demonstrate that by varying the thickness of SiC layers and filling ratio throughout SiC 1D-PC structures or by using SiC pillars of different size in a pyramid arrangement, we can achieve a broad absorption bandwidth with the SiC microstructures. This absorption control provides insight for the design of efficient thermal emitters, which can be used in thermal conversion devices. Moreover, us-ing the concept of Bloch impedance, we find that translucent spectral regions can exist in SiC 1D-PCs. This possibility is highly desirable for constructing optical components in the Mid-IR spectrum where suitable bulk highly refractive materials are rare. In addition, we also present a complete theory of propagation in lossy 1D-PCs, by systematically extending the comprehensive theory for lossless 1D-PCs. Relying on this theory, we report superbending of light, beyond 90 0 in a judiciously designed superprism constructed with a SiC 1D-PC. Since, the findings reported in this thesis are in principle applicable to any polar material, we believe that our work will inspire the design of a variety of absorptive/emissive and ultra-refractive devices across the THz/Mid-IR spectrum.

Photopolymerization in dispersed media combines the advantages of light triggered radical polymerization (temporal and spatial control) with those of latex synthesis. This thesis aims to explore new initiation routes and photopolymerization processes using visible or near-infrared (NIR) photons for polymerization of UV-absorbing media and deeper light penetration into these dispersed media. We first explored how a disulfide photoinitiator could lead to surfactant-free latexes stabilized by CeO2 nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) under visible light. The latter enabled the formation of inorganic/polymer hybrid latexes and stabilized the particles. The grafting of the initiator to the CeO2 surface was key to positioning the CeO2 NPs at the surface of the polymer particles. Pickering-stabilized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) latexes with incorporation rates up to 88% were obtained by both miniemulsion and emulsion photopolymerizations. MMA was then copolymerized with n-butyl acrylate to produce anti-UV films with improved mechanical properties. In a second part, we investigated the use of NIR to improve photon penetration and utilize less energetic wavelengths to trigger polymerization. Because NIR photons are less energetic new solutions must be developed to initiate the reaction. We targeted multiphoton absorption (MPA). Two MPA dyes were introduced. They were first shown to work as one-photon photoinitiators at 455 nm in emulsion and miniemulsion photopolymerization. Photopolymerization in miniemulsion was then carried out using an 800 nm laser in MPA conditions. Our initial studies show the successful production of PMMA latexes

Résumé :
The present thesis deals with different aspects of the chemistry of oxovanadium(IV) complexes, their interaction with double stranded DNA, photo-induced DNA cleavage, photo-enhanced cytotoxicity in visible light and red light and localisation and cellular uptake to understand the mechanism of cell death. Chapter I presents a general introduction on potential of transition metal complexes as photochemotherapeutic agents. A brief introduction about Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) as a new alternative to chemotherapy for treating cancer has been made. Various modes of interaction of small molecules with duplex DNA are described. Recent reports on metal-based photocytotoxicity, photo-induced DNA cleavage activity and cellular localization are presented in detail. Objective of the present investigation is also dealt in this Chapter. Chapter II of the thesis deals with the synthesis, characterization, DNA binding and photo-induced DNA cleavage activity of ternary oxovanadium(IV) complexes of ONO-donor 2-(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)phenol (salamp) and phenanthroline bases to explore the photo-induced DNA cleavage activity in UV-A light of 365 nm and photocytotoxicity in visible light. Résumé :
The electronic structure of molecules includes electronic (2-10 eV, UV-Vis absorption), vibrational (10-2 - 2 eV, infrared spectroscopy & Raman scattering), and rotational (10–5 – 10–3 eV, microwave spectroscopy) energy levels that are probed by appropriate spectroscopy methods. Light, incident on a molecule or molecular solid, is either absorbed (IR, single photon, non-zero derivative of dipole moment), or elastically (Rayleigh) or inelastically (Raman, two-photon, non-zero derivative of the polarizability) scattered. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy finds much use in materials characterization, including in studying the curing of polymer composites now incorporated in aircraft structures. When atoms form solids their electronic structure, particularly the energy levels of the outer electrons involved in the bonding, are significantly altered. Both occupied and unoccupied levels in solids are probed. Photoemission spectroscopy (PES) with X-rays (XPS) or ultraviolet light (UPS) incidence, and inverse PES probe occupied and unoccupied energy levels of surfaces, respectively. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) complements XPS, and probes unoccupied energy levels of solids. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) provides information on the final density of unoccupied states, the transition probabilities, and many body effects. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) provides element-specific nearest neighbor distances and their coordination number.

This was made possible through collaboration with designers and technologists at the company reGalerija in Zabok. After numerous attempts, black pigments were found that allowed a hidden image to be created in the rug or tapestry in the NIR range. This discovery revealed the possibilities of light absorption response in wool material and in the NIR spectrum, as is visible in the IR reflectography (IRR) images. The colour pigment research, conducted using the InfraredArt method, resulted in the discovery of a new method of making rugs with double images that respected the colours/dyes/pigments in NIR. This type of rug with a hidden image in the IR range, made based on a double IR image template, is unique and the first such known work in the world. It hides a riddle or secret, or hidden information in the strands of wool, because apart from the abstract image, visible to the naked eye, it also contains an invisible, achromatic woven image with a figurative motif in the same layer.

Résumé :
The most commonly used lidar (light detection and ranging) systems are not eye-safe and pose potential risk of eye damage especially in the case of downward pointing airborne lidar systems. A short wavelength lidar capable of operating in nominally eye-safe spectral regions (1.54 μm) is needed for cloud and aerosol studies [2, 3]. A Raman-shifted Nd:YAG laser capable of generating 1.54 μm radiation can be developed to qualify as an eye-safe lidar [4,5,6]. The eye-safety criterion set by the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) for a single pulse exposure is: 1 J/cm2 at 1.54 μm, which is specified to be about 400,000 times safer, for eye exposure, than Nd:YAG laser radiation at 1.06 μm [4].

Résumé :
Currently available optically addressed spatial light modulators (OASLMs) are sensitive only to the visible and near infrared (< 1.1 μm) light [1]. For many applications OASLMs which are sensitive to infrared (IR) light at 1.55 μm are required or preferred. A common OASLM light-modulating material is liquid crystal (LC) which can be addressed by a thin film photosensor [2]. This scheme requires that the photosensor exhibits very low dark current to prevent the LC from switching on in the absence of write light, and high photosensitivity to switch the LC on in the presence of write light [3]. An InGaAs/InP photosensor fulfilling these requirements will allow the successful fabrication of an IR-sensitive OASLM. An OASLM incorporating such a photosensor has been previously reported but exhibited a poor contrast ratio due to the large InGaAs/InP dark current [4].
