Objective To date, there are no studies of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the Navajo Nation, US. The primary objective of this manuscript is to understand whether counties with a higher proportion of Navajo (Diné) population also had higher cases and deaths of COVID-19 and whether these dropped with vaccination. Method We undertook a cross-sectional analysis of county level data from March 16, 2020—May 11, 2021. Data were obtained from public repositories and the US Census for the Navajo Nation, including northeastern Arizona, southeastern Utah, and northwestern New Mexico. The primary outcome measure is the number of individuals with confirmed cases or deaths of COVID-19. A secondary outcome was COVID-19 vaccinations. Results The 11 counties in Navajo Nation have a wide variation in the percent Navajo population, the resources available (ICU beds and occupancy), and COVID-19 outcomes. Overall, there was a substantial increase in the number of cases from March 16 –July 16, 2020 (the height of the pandemic) with a doubling time of 10.12 days on Navajo Nation. The percent Navajo population was a strong predictor of COVID-19 cases and deaths per million population. COVID-19 vaccinations were inversely associated with COVID-19 cases and deaths in these counties. Conclusions The COVID-19 pandemic on the Navajo Nation is a story of resilience. Navajo Nation was one of the hardest hit areas of the United States, with peak cases and deaths due to COVID-19. With an aggressive vaccination effort, these cases and deaths were strikingly curtailed, showing the resilience of the Navajo (Diné) people.

Geologic Carbon Storage (GCS) is a promising technology for storing large volumes of anthropogenic CO2 effectively and permanently. Numerical simulations are an integral part of site selection and characterization for any potential GCS site. As part of the DOE-funded CarbonSAFE Rocky Mountains Phase I project, a regional GCS analysis was undertaken to understand the efficacy of storing CO2 emissions from the power generation and heavy industry in central Utah’s favorable geology. In this study, the injection of CO2 for geologic storage was simulated in the Navajo Sandstone Formation in Emery County, Utah. Carbon dioxide was sourced from regional power generation stations and heavy industries throughout Utah, with an emphasis on emissions reduction at the Hunter Power Plant near Castle Dale, Utah. A simulation grid was extracted from the project’s geological model encompassing an area around Price, Huntington, and Castle Dale in central Utah. The Navajo Sandstone Member of the Glen Canyon Group was the target of CO2 injection with the overlying Carmel formation providing the primary seal. A suite of simulations was performed assessing the viability of this area for permanent CO2 storage. Results indicate that the area can not only store 46 million metric tons of anthropogenic CO2, meeting the project goals, but this area has the capacity to securely store at least 1.3 billion tons of CO2, suggesting the injection site and surrounding geology are suitable locations for commercial-scale GCS.

Purpose: Hepatitis C incidence is higher among American Indian/Alaskan Native populations than any other racial or ethnic group in the United States. Chronic Hepatitis C complications include cirrhosis of the liver, end stage liver disease, and hepatocellular cancer. Direct acting antiviral treatment taken orally results in > 90% cure, yet rural primary care providers lack the training and confidence to treat and monitor patients with chronic Hepatitis C. Rural patients are reluctant to travel to urban areas for Hepatitis C treatment. Project ECHO is an innovative tele-mentoring program where specialists mentor primary care providers via videoconferencing to treat diseases they would otherwise be unable to manage. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to increase Hepatitis C treatment at a rural Navajo health clinic through partnership with Project ECHO specialists. Methods: This quality improvement project was guided by Lippitt’s Phases of Change Theory. The systematic process plan included a protocol for roles and expectations of all members of the healthcare team, a documentation and communication plan, and a tracking system for monitoring patient progress through the plan of care. Outcomes were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Findings: Following partnership with Project ECHO, six patients (31.6%) consented to receiving Hepatitis C treatment at the rural Navajo health clinic. All six were contacted by outreach staff at multiple points during the project. Five (26.3%) completed the full course of drug therapy. Four (21.1%) completed follow-up lab work, of which three (15.8%) had a documented cure by sustained virologic response. Conclusions: Hepatitis C care via Project ECHO-rural clinic partnership was affordable, feasible and not excessively time consuming for a facility with substantial patient outreach resources. Vrtače so najbolj pogoste kraške oblike zmerno toplega pasu, saj njihov nastanek navadno pripisujemo kemičnem preperevanju oziroma koroziji, ki je najbolj tipičen proces na krasu. V članku smo ponovno ovrednotili nastanek dveh najbolj tipičnih primerov korozijskih vrtač, ki jih je podal Cvijić. V raziskavi smo ugotovili, da oba primera, ki predstavljata temelje korozijske razlage nastanka vrtač, pravzaprav nista nastala s korozijo površja. Namen članka je podati dvom o razumevanju nastanka najbolj tipičnih kraških oblik.

“Star” and crescent combinations in rock art in the American Southwest were first interpreted in 1955 as eyewitness depictions of the 1054 AD supernova explosion that produced the Crab nebula. While the Crab nebula is visible only telescopically, the event that generated it was brilliant, and for a time, only the sun and moon were brighter. Additional Crab supernova candidates in California and Southwest rock art were suggested 20 years later, and they included Chaco Canyon’s Penasco Blanco pictograph panel, which became the poster child for Crab supernova rock art and is now called “Supernova” on signage at the site. By 1979, a list of 21 Crab supernova rock art sites was assembled, and the inventory has continued to expand more slowly since then. This critical review of the supernova interpretation of star/crescent rock art, the product of 35 years of fieldwork, required an independent re-examination of all of the primary sites in person. That enterprise has already demonstrated that the Tenabo, New Mexico panel does not illustrate the Crab supernova and that the two Arizona sites on which the entire supernova rock art premise is based (White Mesa and “Navaho Canyon”) are unlikely records of the event. This detailed evaluation of the primary proposed star/crescent images indicates none is a satisfactory portrayal of the striking 1054 AD supernova.

The integration of primary care and mental health care is a requirement of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 and has challenged primary care providers to address gaps in the quality of care provided for patients with mental health issues. Vulnerable populations, such as the American Indian people experience gaps in quality health care, especially communication gaps and language barriers. This quality improvement project used a survey design to explore the potential for primary care providers to adopt a culturally sensitive electronic mental health, screening tool to bridge communication gaps and language barriers. Primary care providers recruited from the Northern Arizona University (NAU) Campus Health Services clinic evaluated the concept of a touch screen iPad technology to implement the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), which screens for depression using audio options in English and in the Navajo language to accommodate American Indian patients. A PowerPoint overview of the iPad technology was sent via email to the NAU providers and included; the PHQ-9 screening results, which are to be immediately accessible in the patient's electronic health record along with a screening report. The screening report included the PHQ-9 depression score, interpretation of the score, best treatment choices, and a graph for monitoring patient progress. This survey results concluded providers perceive the iPad technology for mental health screening to be useful in their integrated primary care clinic. A modified Technology Acceptance Model (Davis, 1989) was used to evaluate the providers' perception of the iPad Technology, and the University of Arizona's Qualtrics survey system provided data analysis of the survey results.

Esta tese aborda a grande estratégia levada a cabo pelo Barão do Rio-Branco durante o período em que esteve à frente do Itamaraty e o papel que o programa de reorganização naval (1904-1910) desempenhou nesse contexto. O estudo de caso realizado buscou determinar os condicionantes domésticos e internacionais daquele programa, assim como a mundivisão do patrono da diplomacia brasileira a respeito da instrumentalidade do poder militar para a condução da política externa – levando em conta o resoluto apoio conferido pelo Ministro das Relações Exteriores à sustentação daquele programa. Esses objetivos estiveram enquadrados por discussão teórica sobre os conceitos de legado e de grande estratégia e por largo histórico do papel desempenhado pela Marinha na vida nacional. Por fim, com base em avaliação do sistema internacional de segurança contemporâneo, procurou-se cotejar a política externa de Paranhos Jr. com a implementada no presente – visando determinar em que medida a primeira estaria datada e até que ponto a última mereceria ajustes à luz do legado do Barão. Conclui-se pela rejeição de visões idealizadas desse legado, ao passo que se afirma a atualidade da concepção de Rio-Branco sobre a centralidade do poder militar para a inserção internacional soberana do País.
This thesis addresses Baron of Rio-Branco’s grand strategy during his term as Brazil’s Minister of External Relations and the role played in this context by the naval reorganization programme (1904-1910). The ensuing case study aimed to determine domestic and international constraints that affected the latter, as well as the worldview of the patron of Brazilian diplomacy regarding military power’s instrumentality to foreign policy – taking into account Rio-Branco’s unwavering support of the programme. These goals were framed by a theoretical discussion of the concepts of legacy, grand strategy, and by a broad historical portrait of the role played by the Navy since independence. Finally, based on an assessment of the contemporary international security system, Paranhos Jr.’s foreign policy was compared to the one now implemented to determine to what extent the former was dated and to what extent the latter should be adjusted in light of Rio-Branco’s legacy. The thesis’s conclusion rejects idealized versions of that legacy while it affirms the continued relevance of Rio-Branco’s belief in the centrality of military power for Brazil’s sovereign integration into the international system.

Cette thèse se présente comme un essai de socio-histoire de la profession plurielle de marin dans le royaume de Majorque sur la longue durée, de la conquête de l’île par Jacques Ier d’Aragon en 1229 au soutien majorquin à la conquête du royaume de Naples par Alphonse V le Magnanime dans les années 1440. La substitution de la notion de « professionnel de mer » à celle floue de « gens de mer », employée dans l’historiographie, permet d’observer plus précisément ces hommes, en discernant pour chacun, de manière synchronique et diachronique grâce à la reconstitution de trajectoires individuelles, compétences et activités navales, fonctions à bord, et statut social à terre, dans un contexte médiéval où les statuts juridiques, des aristocrates aux esclaves, occupaient une place centrale dans l’identification des individus et la hiérarchisation de la société majorquine. Dans trois grandes parties successives, l’étude articulée et interdépendante des dimensions pratiques, institutionnelles et sociales de cette professionnalisation offre ainsi des réalités vécues multiples, individuellement et collectivement, tant en mer qu’à terre, qui dépassent le simple cadre normatif présenté dans les différentes coutumes de mer, les collectifs professionnels et les juridictions maritimes en vigueur dans le royaume de Majorque
This thesis is a socio-historical essay about the plural profession of mariner in the kingdom of Majorca over the long term, from the conquest of the island by James I of Aragon in 1229 to Majorcan support for the conquest of the kingdom of Naples by Alfonso V the Magnanimous in the 1440s. The substitution of the notion of "professional of the sea" for that of "seaman", used in historiography, allows for a more precise observation of these men, discerning for each of them, synchronously and diachronically thanks to the reconstitution of individual trajectories, naval skills and activities, functions on board, and social status on land, in a medieval context where legal status, from aristocrats to slaves, occupied a central place in the identification of individuals and in the hierarchisation of Majorcan society. In three main successive parts, the articulated and interdependent study of the practical, institutional and social dimensions of this professionalisation thus offers multiple lived realities, individually and collectively, both at sea and on land, which go beyond the simple normative framework presented in the different sea customs, professional collectives and maritime jurisdictions in force in the Kingdom of Majorca

O objeto que trata esta tese é o processo de criação e consolidação da primeira Companhia de Aprendizes Marinheiros do Brasil Imperial em 1840. No trabalho procuramos destacar os momentos históricos e políticos percorridos para que fosse criada a Companhia de Aprendizes discutindo e examinando esse processo com base nas diferentes ideias que permeavam as ações de diferentes Ministros da Marinha e as legislações específicas referentes à criação e regulamentação da Companhia. Procuramos desenvolver nesse trabalho a ideia de que as Companhias de Aprendizes foram fundamentais no processo, ainda que parcial e incompleto, de instrução e educação formal dos marinheiros iniciado em meados do século XIX. Servindo ainda para apontar as contradições históricas entre recrutamento e composição das praças; um relativo protagonismo dos Oficiais e Ministros da Marinha militares em diferentes momentos na formulação de uma conduta política institucional que colocasse em prática uma efetiva institucionalização e enfardamento para os marinheiros; uma instituição pública para jovens que pudesse fornecer educação, tão rara aos “indivíduos do comum”; e, por fim, a custódia e guarda desses jovens.
The thesis object is the creation and consolidation process of the first Imperial Brazilian Seaman's Apprentice Company in 1840. In this work we seek to detach the political and historical moments passed through in order to create the Seaman´s Company, discussing and examining the process based in the different ideas that permeated the actions from the different navy ministers and the specific legislations concerning the Company´s creation and registration. It was tried to develop in this work the idea that the Seaman´s Apprentice Company were, although partial and incomplete, instrumental in the process of formal instructing and educating of the seaman started in mid nineteenth century. It also serves to point out the historical contradictions between recruitment and composition squares, a relative prominence of Navy offices and Ministers different moments in the formulation of an institutional political conduct to put into practice and effective institutionalization and military uniformazing, a public institution for young people who could provide a public institution education, as rare to the “individuals of the common”; and, finally, the custody and protection of these young people.
L'objet mentionné dans cette thèse est le processus de création et de mise en place de lapremière société d'apprenants marins du Brésil Impérial en 1840. Dans ce travail, nouscherchons à mettre en évidence les moments historiques et politiques parcourus jusqu'àla création de la Société d'Apprenants en discutant et en examinant ce processus sur labase des différentes idées qui pénétraient les actions des différents ministres de laMarine et les lois spécifiques relatives à la création et à la réglementation de la Société.Nous cherchons à développer dans ce travail l'idée que les sociétés d'apprenants ontcontribué au processus, bien que l'éducation partielle et incomplète, l'instruction etl'éducation formelle des marins ont commencé au milieu du XIXe siècle. Le travail sertégalement à souligner les contradictions historiques entre le recrutement et lacomposition des soldats; un rôle relatif des dirigeants et ministres de la marine militairesà des moments différents dans la formulation d'une conduite politique institutionnelle demettre en place une institutionnalisation efficace et des uniformes pour les marins; uneinstitution publique pour les jeunes qui pourraient fournir de l'éducation, si rare parmiles « gens ordinaires »; et enfin, la garde de ces jeunes.

Nesta dissertação a Aviação Naval da Marinha Portuguesa é vista a partir dos Anais do Clube Militar Naval. Para que se possa estudar e compreender os factos apresentados torna-se necessário, antes de mais, ter uma ideia clara da temática, o que só é possível através de um forte enquadramento. Numa primeira fase foram analisadas algumas das principais obras relacionadas com o tema, assim como aquelas que, de alguma forma, ajudam a compreender algumas das questões mais debatidas. Foram então selecionados alguns dos principais marcos da História da Aviação, da Aviação Militar Portuguesa e da Aviação Naval Portuguesa e explicados os mais famosos e mais discutidos. Encontra-se assim apresentada a Aviação Naval fora dos Anais do Clube Militar Naval, mas para completar este enquadramento torna-se necessário conhecer a Aviação Naval fora da Marinha Portuguesa. Este tema, porém, pode ser analisado a partir do periódico em estudo. Na análise dos Anais do Clube Militar Naval foram encontrados os principais temas, períodos, autores e motivações de escrita, o que permitiu estabelecer uma relação entre o que foi escrito e os acontecimentos mais marcantes e concluir a forma como na publicação foi abordada a Aviação Naval, até o seu último homem regressar à "casa mãe". Os Anais do Clube Militar Naval tiveram um papel muito importante no registo histórico de alguns dos mais importantes feitos da Aviação Naval, sublinha-se alguns porque muitos dos importantes feitos foram ignorados até ao inicio da sua extinção, ao longo desta dissertação tal será evidenciado.
In this dissertation the naval aviation in Portuguese Navy is seen from the Anais do Clube Militar. In order to study and understand the facts presented, it is necessary, first of all, to have a clear idea of the subject matter, which is only possible through a strong framework. In a first phase we analyzed some of the main works related to the theme, as well as those that, in some way, help to understand some of the most debated issues. Some of the main milestones of Aviation History, Portuguese Military Aviation and Portuguese Naval Aviation were selected and the most famous and most discussed were explained. This is how Naval Aviation is presented outside the Anais do Clube Militar Naval, but to complete this framework it becomes necessary to know the Naval Aviation outside the Portuguese Navy. This theme, however, can be analyzed from that time's newspapers. In the analysis of the Anais do Clube Militar Naval were found the main themes, periods, authors and motivations of writing, which allowed to establish a relation between what was written and the most important events and to conclude the way in the publication was approached Naval Aviation, until his last man returns to the "mother house". The Anais do Clube Militar Naval played a very important role as a historical register of some of the most important achievements of Naval Aviation, it is underlined "some" because many of the important feats were ignored until the beginning of its extinction, throughout this dissertation this will be evidenced.

Os estudos relativos à história de Cartago têm sido feitos, na maior parte, do ponto de vista da sua relação com Roma. Nos últimos anos, novas abordagens que focam o mundo púnico na sua identidade própria têm sido cada vez mais frequentes, atribuindo particular atenção aos vestígios arqueológicos. Tal contribuiu para novas interpretações relativas à cidade e aos seus processos de colonização do Mediterrâneo. Este mar, que toca uma vasta área dos continentes Europeu e Africano, tem um papel central na Antiguidade, bem como os seus territórios insulares, pontos de cruzamento de rotas e de crescimento de cidades. No contexto desta dissertação, que pretende observar o período de transição entre as talassocracias cartaginesa e romana, a Sicília tem grande importância. Além de ser o palco da Primeira Guerra Púnica, esta ilha é, desde cronologias recuadas, ocupada por numerosas e variadas populações, assistindo a múltiplas tentativas de domínio e colonização. Observar-se-á a ilha desde a chegada dos primeiros habitantes até ao início da guerra, para compreender a sua posição de centralidade e espaço de charneira. Além da colonização do Mediterrâneo, observar-se-á também o papel da esfera militar. Será atribuída particular relevância ao mundo dos mercenários ao serviço de Cartago, procurando compreender as suas origens e utilizações, bem como a sua capacidade frente ao exército romano. Discutir-se-á a possibilidade da existência de um exército de cidadãos-soldados em Cartago e respectiva evolução. Será também observada a Marinha romana (especificamente, o seu nascimento, evolução e capacidade durante a Primeira Guerra Púnica). Todos estes pontos, que são um conjunto de conceitos em torno da problemática do mar na Antiguidade, culminarão na observação da questão dos impérios e da utilização do espaço marítimo como seu sustentáculo, procurando explorar perspectivas menos observadas pela historiografia tradicional e tentando fornecer um estudo consistente e coerente dos problemas da guerra e da diplomacia, da política e da economia, e sobretudo da forma como Roma e Cartago se relacionam entre si e com o mar Mediterrâneo.
Abstract: The studies regarding the History of Carthage have been made, for the most part, from the point of view of its relation to Rome. In the last few years, new approaches that focus the Punic world in its own identity have grown more frequent, paying particular attention to the archaeological remains. Such has contributed to new interpretations regarding the city and its processes of colonizing the Mediterranean. This sea, which touches a vast area of the European and African Continents, has a central part in Antiquity, as do its insular territories, points of crossing routes and growth of settlements. In the context of this dissertation, which intends to observe the transition period between the Roman and Carthaginian Thalassocracies, Sicily has a great importance. Aside from being the stage of the First Punic War, this island has been, since early chronologies, occupied by numerous and diverse populations, witnessing several attempts of domination and colonization. The island will be observed since the arrival of its first inhabitants until the beginning of the war, to understand its central position and as hinge area. Besides the colonization of the Mediterranean, the role of the military sphere will also be observed. Particular relevance will be given to to the world of mercenaries under Carthaginian service, in an attempt to understand their origins and ways of use, as well as their capacity when facing the Roman army. The possibility of the existence of an army of citizen-soldiers in Carthage and its respective evolution will be discussed. The study of the Roman navy will also be addressed (specifically its birth, evolution and capacity throughout the First Punic War). All these points, which are a sum of concepts surrounding the problematics of the sea in Antiquity, will culminate in the observation of the issue of empires and the use of the maritime space as their support, by attempting to explore perspectives less observed by traditional historiography and providing a consistent and coherent study on the subjects of war and diplomacy, politics and economy, and above all, of the way in which Rome and Carthage relate among themselves and with the Mediterranean sea.

O Clube Militar Naval foi fundado em 1866, num século repleto de mudanças, fruto do ajuntamento espontâneo dos oficiais de marinha como forma de manifestarem a sua discordância contra a proposta de alteração do regime de promoções e do estado em que a marinha se encontrava. O primeiro objetivo havia sido alcançado, através da não alteração da forma como eram realizadas as promoções, no entanto o estado em que a marinha se encontrava motivou os seus sócios a continuarem com o debate em torno dos assuntos navais. Os Anais do Clube Militar Naval são criados em dezembro de 1870, no entanto só a partir de 1871 é que estes começam a ser publicados ininterruptamente até ao período atual. Os Anais são a forma de expressão através da qual são abordados os temas, os pensamentos e ideias dos sócios do Clube. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar uma resumida história do Clube através da análise que certos acontecimentos históricos tiveram nas páginas dos seus Anais, ao mesmo tempo que se tenta aferir da existência de influência entre o regime em vigor e o Clube. Como forma de facilitar esta avaliação o presente trabalho está dividido em quatro capítulos. O primeiro capítulo aborda a fundação do Clube e a contextualização do século XIX. O segundo capítulo é referente ao período temporal do regime monárquico, de 1866 a 1910, e será abordado o Ultimato inglês, a subscrição nacional e a Liga Naval Portuguesa. O terceiro capítulo aborda o período temporal da Primeira República e será abordado a Grande Guerra, a modernização naval ocorrida e a travessia aérea do Atlântico Sul. A Ditadura Militar que vigorou entre 1926 e 1933 fica enquadrada no quarto capítulo juntamente com o Estado Novo, onde se aborda a Segunda Guerra Mundial, a interação com a NATO e a Guerra Colonial terminando com o 25 de abril de 1974. Com o objetivo de assegurar o devido distanciamento histórico e também por ser o fim do regime ditatorial, o fim do período abordado por esta dissertação é o 25 de abril de1974.
The Clube Militar Naval was funded in 1866, in a century full of changes, as a consequence of the spontaneous grouping of the Navy officers as a way to show there disagreement against the government proposal for changing the military promotion system laws and the real state the navy was. The first goal has been achieved, by the fact of the government didn’t change the law, however the real naval state gave incentive to endure the discussion around the naval affairs. The Anais do Clube Militar Naval was created in December 1870, despite this it only start working uninterruptedly after 1871. The Clube use the Anais as his magazine in order to express the themes, thoughts and ideas from there associates. This paper aims to present a brief history of the Clube through the analysis that certain historical events had on the pages of his Anais, while trying to ascertain the existence of influence between the existing regime and the Clube. In order to facilitate this evaluation, the present work is divided into four chapters. The first chapter discusses the foundation of the Clube and the contextualization of the nineteenth century. The second chapter refers to the period of the Monarchy, 1866-1910, and will address the English Ultimatum, national subscription and the Liga Naval Portuguesa. The third chapter covers the time period of the First Republic and will be addressed the Great War, the naval modernization and the first air across of the South Atlantic. A Ditadura Militar that ruled between 1926 and 1933, is framed in the fourth chapter along with the Estado Novo, where approaching the Second World War, the interaction with NATO and the Colonial War ending with the April 25, 1974. With the purpose of securing due historical distance and also for being the end of the dictatorship regime, the period covered by this dissertation is the April 25, 1974.

Durante o período de 1916 a 1936, Portugal, teve ao seu serviço um navio que marcou, para sempre, a história do salvamento marítimo português. De seu nome N. S. Patrão Lopes, o mesmo, fora introduzido ao serviço da bandeira portuguesa a 23 de fevereiro de 1916, após ter sido apreendido à marinha Alemã. A sua era de salvamento iniciou-se apenas um ano mais tarde, aquando do salvamento de um lugre, de seu nome Ligeiro que fora atingido por um torpedo provindo de um submarino alemão. Desde então, ficara demonstrado que este navio seria detentor de certas características que o tornariam num navio de excelência para o efeito. Durante o seu período de operacionalização, o navio teve encarregado de inúmeras missões de carácter importantíssimo: desde missões de espécie mais simplista, tais como o reboque a diversas unidades navais, tanto ostentadoras de bandeira portuguesa, como bandeira estrangeira, passando por encargos bastante mais complexos, tais como: missões de destruição, salientando-se a destruição do português Lizdouro, do americano Milton, do alemão Deister e do português Estrela do Mar, missões de inundação, desatando-se a inundação do vapor Ares, por forma a se extinguir um incêndio a bordo, missões de recuperação, fazendo.se salientar a recuperação do Alviela, um navio que, após um inopinado o navio afundou-se junto ao cais onde se mantinha atracado e, por fim, missões de reparação de unidades navais, evidenciando-se a reparação ao holandês Meerkerk e ao grego Oinoussios. Apesar de todo o seu contributo para o salvamento marítimo português, o desfecho final para este navio fora deveras trágico: após encalhar num baixio, junto à entrada do porto de Lisboa, enquanto praticava o reboque de um batelão, o navio fora deixado à mercê da fúria das condições meteorológicas pelos meios de salvamento do Porto de Lisboa, acabando por se considerar perdido ao final do dia 2 de março de 1936.
From 1916 to 1936, Portugal had at its service a ship that marked forever the history of the Portuguese maritime rescue. Her name, N. S. Patrão Lopes, that had been introduced to the service of the Portuguese flag on 23rd of February of 1916, after being seized from the German navy. His rescue career began only a year later, when a luger was rescued, the Ligeiro, which had been struck by a torpedo from a German submarine. From then on, she demonstrated that this vessel possessed the right characteristics which would make it a vessel of excellence for this purpose. During the period it operated, Patrão Lopes conducted numerous very important missions: some of a more simplistic nature, such as the towing of several vessels, both Portuguese and foreign, as much more complex charges , such as destruction missions, like the destruction of the Portuguese Lizdouro, the American Milton, the German Deister and the Portuguese Estrela do Mar. Flood missions, unleashing the flood of the steamer Ares, in order to extinguish a fire on board. Recovery missions, highlighting the recovery of Alviela, a ship that, after a short while, sank at the dock where it was moored, and finally, repair missions, evidencing the reparation to the Dutch ship Meerkerk and the Greek Oinoussios. In spite of all its contribution to the Portuguese maritime rescue, the final outcome for this ship was indeed tragic: after stranding in a shallow area, near the entrance to the Port of Lisbon, while towing a barge, the ship was left at the mercy of fury of meteorological conditions by means of rescue of the Port of Lisbon, ending up being considered lost at the end of the day, March 2nd of 1936.

Prispevek obravnava razmerje med turizmom in vlogo kulturnih ustanov pri sooblikovanju turistične ponudbe, na kratko analizira posebno vlogo muzejev kot javnih institucij v kulturnem turizmu in navaja nekatere predloge za nadaljnji razvoj. Avtorici izpostavljata različne oblike odnosov, ki se razvijajo med turizmom in kulturnimi ustanovami, ter predlagata mreženje kot obliko sodelovanja na področju kulturnega turizma. Na podlagi študije primera Posavskega muzeja Brežice so predstavljeni štirje primeri različnih pogledov turizma in kulturnih ustanov na razvoj produktov kulturnega turizma in predlogi za reševanje konfliktov. Prispevek ponuja predloge za možnosti dobrega mreženja in kakovostnega sodelovanja.

En sus escritos, Félix Denegrí no solo percibió al mar como recurso hídrico sino también como el medio gue proporcionó a las diferentes estrategias, antes y después de la independencia, el teatro de operaciones que determinaría el poderío. En América del Sur, el Callao había representado el eje del gran potencial naval del Pacífico; y con él, del Tribunal del Consulado, así como de los armadores limeños que estaban pendientes del comercio entre esta parte del continente y América del Norte. El mar fue el escenario de la lucha entre patriotas y realistas y permitió, junto con otros elementos, la independencia de Lima y de otras regiones del país. Abstract Naval modernization has many causes, but the primary driver of modernization is strategic rivalry. This chapter critically reviews the literature on naval modernization and how it is manifested in the case studies of India and China in the modern era. The literature on Chinese naval modernization is more sophisticated than that focused on India. However, scholars in both fields have made important contributions to our understanding of these developments. This chapter also demonstrates that while the literature speaks of rivalry as a main driver in the two states, no study has yet to offer granular analysis of how rivalry actually drives leaders to pursue naval modernization.

La hospitalización a domicilio (HAD) es una alternativa asistencial del Área de Salud de Pamplona consistente en un modelo organizativo capaz de dispensar a pacientes en su propio domicilio un conjunto de actividades y cuidados sanitarios con complejidad, intensidad y duración comparables a los de una hospitalización convencional cuando todavía precisan de una vigilancia activa y una asistencia compleja. Ante el incremento progresivo de ingresos en el Hospital Universitario de Navarra (HUN) y las previsiones existentes para las siguientes semanas, el lunes 9 de marzo de 2020 se decide crear dentro de la unidad de HAD del HUN una unidad específica centrada en COVID-19 y que, por tanto, entra en el dispositivo de atención a los pacientes con infección por COVID-19. Debido al incremento progresivo en el número de ingresos hospitalarios, el día 26 de marzo el Servicio Navarro de Salud-Osasunbidea (SNS-O) decide medicalizar el hotel Iruña Park con el objetivo de incrementar el número de camas hospitalarias disponibles. En este documento se expone la actividad realizada en las tres primeras olas por la unidad de HAD del HUN en la atención domiciliaria y en la primera ola en el hotel medicalizado.

Continuous review, adaptation and improvement through upkeep and maintenance periods has enabled the Royal Navy submarine fleet to remain fit for purpose through successive life extension programmes. Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth, provides nuclear submarine dry dock facilities for maintenance. The Site Licences which authorise operations of these nuclear facilities are administered by the Office for Nuclear Regulation which ensures that the intent of the facility nuclear safety case is maintained throughout all operations. As such, any dock modifications and refit support equipment or structures must be designed within the framework of the safety case. A requirement to undertake refit activities external to the hull of a nuclear submarine while in dock resulted in a design and build project for a temporary dock-bottom building to provide a safe and capable environment. The design of this building’s structure and sub-systems was heavily influenced by the nuclear safety case. This paper explores the challenges of designing equipment within the constraints of the nuclear licensed site, identifies the provenance and the requirements of the nuclear safety case of a dry dock nuclear facility, and examines the influence of this safety case upon requirements management, and the design lifecycle. The design of the dock-bottom building is presented, including an outline of the technical challenges which arose, and some of the novel solutions developed, including; a modular, seismically- qualified, primary structure; and a modified crane incorporating a crushable element. The paper explores the issues of finite element analysis of the primary structure to substantiate performance and satisfy the safety case. The paper also presents a discussion of the influence and impact of the safety case upon the building design project.

Abstract The seaway loadings upon ships are inherently random in nature and can best be described by probabilistic methods. The primary loadings are those that cause a response of the overall hull girder and consist of vertical bending moments, lateral bending moments, and torsional moments. Since it is highly probable that these loads can be severe, it is important to predict the maximum lifetime or extreme values. Of equal concern is the cumulative effect of all of the waves upon the fatigue life of the ship. This paper presents a probabilistic method for predicting both the extreme and fatigue loadings in a unified and consistent manner. The first part of the seaway loading is the low frequency, wave buoyancy contribution. This loading distribution is obtained by dividing the lifetime of the ship into two thousand stochastic cells defined by operability (probabilities of ship heading and speed) and sea conditions (wave height probabilities and spectral parameters). The ship response in the frequency domain (Response Amplitude Operators, RAO’s) for each operability condition is multiplied by the ocean spectrum for each wave height and spectral shape. The resulting response spectra produce the probability distributions for determining extreme and cumulative wave buoyancy loadings. This paper presents unique algorithms for the bending and torsional RAO’s based upon extensive model test and sea trial data, as well as data validating the probability distributions. The second part of the seaway loading is the dynamic (high frequency) contribution from slam-induced whip-ping. The probability distributions for the filtered, high frequency responses were determined from model tests and sea trials. Algorithms for predicting the dynamic contributions to vertical and lateral bending are developed as functions of ship geometry, operability, and sea parameters. The whipping distributions are then combined with the wave distributions to form distributions for the total primary load for each cell. The method of combination accounts for the phasing of the slam event with the wave buoyancy cycle and includes algorithms for the hydrodynamic damping. A cumulative lifetime load distribution is then formed from the summation of all of the wave events in all of the cells. The cumulative exceedance load distribution is used for predicting both extreme events and fatigue lives.

State and non-state adversaries are gaining technological advances and expanding their ability to conduct combined operations. Rapid fielding and seamless integration of advanced power and energy capabilities, such as power continuity across systems and electrically-powered weapons and sensors, will be critical for allies and partners to keep pace. As energy is one of the primary drivers for enhanced warfighting capability, these capabilities will be spurred by advances in power, energy and integrated system level controls. Further, the evolution of asymmetric threats will require disruptive and technologically superior solutions that create resilient networks and operate in a fully distributed manner.

Machinery spaces in the majority of Royal Navy (RN) vessels use carbon dioxide (CO2) as the primary fire suppressant. While CO2 is very effective for firefighting, particularly in machinery space application, it is harmful to life in the concentrations required for effective fire suppression; exposure to concentrations greater than 15% can cause death within sixty seconds. The use of CO2 and similar fire suppressant systems in machinery spaces presents a risk due to the potential exposure of personnel. This may occur in a fire scenario where personnel are unable to escape the affected compartment, if there is a leak in the system, or due to accidental discharge. These risks are typically mitigated through physical means and procedural controls. However, in the hierarchy of safety controls the primary means should always be the elimination of the hazard. Babcock Energy and Marine undertook a study for the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence (MoD) into alternative methods of firefighting on Royal Navy minor warship machinery spaces with the safety of personnel considered a key requirement. The study identified five alternatives to CO2 available on the market. One particular aerosol fire suppression system was found to be superior to the others for application in small craft. This system is not toxic, non-ozone depleting and leaves almost no residue after application to the affected space, enabling re-entry (provided that the space has been ventilated to remove the products of combustion). The study concluded that traditional methods of fire suppression should be reconsidered across all small craft due to the health and safety issues associated with CO2 and the availability of improved alternatives. This paper considers the use of traditional firefighting systems on naval vessels in light of 21st century health and safety regulations. An assessment of current fire extinguishing agents is presented followed by a case study to determine the most appropriate solution for a minor warship concept with a particular aerosol system being justified as the preferred option. The paper also considers if the same conclusions would be reached for major warships or if the difference in scale results in an alternative solution.

High-power electric weapons, such as the ElectroMagnetic RailGun (EMRG), laser and High Power Microwave devices are moving closer to practical utilisation by navies, and prototype EMRG systems are being tested at militarily useful energy levels. Previous work in the UCL Department of Mechanical Engineering includes; preliminary design studies for surface combatants with an all electric weapons outfit; and detailed marine engineering analysis, to PhD level, of the implications for future power and propulsion systems of these weapons. Design studies for electrically armed ships have generally examined large destroyer-sized surface combatants, with significant installed electrical power. This paper describes a concept design study for a small corvette-sized combatant, ATK-R, developed as the “minimum sized ship” capable of supporting an EMRG as its primary armament This paper describes the UCL ZEOLIT design tool, the ship design impacts and marine engineering integration of this future concept including the use of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and the choice between power limited (Patrol vessel -like) and power dense (Fast attack craft –like) power and propulsion systems.

A framework and testbed for evaluating system-level controls through quantifiable metrics has been developed following a hardware-in-the-loop approach. The testbed builds on a combination of real-time modelling and simulation, network communication and surrogate control platforms, and allows testing control algorithms early in the design and development cycle. The framework facilitates derisking and benchmarking of a wide variety of applications, but power, energy and reconfiguration management schemes for the notional zonal MVDC shipboard power system architecture are of primary interest. As part of the testbed developments, realtime dynamic simulation models of future naval shipboard power system have been implemented using several simulation platforms and various levels of fidelity. The second core testbed component is based on a heterogeneous set of controller platforms that allows realization of distributed controllers with a node count on the order of 100, each interfaced to a digital real-time simulator. Third, a dedicated network simulator provides a means to emulate computer networks linking simulation and controls. Extending previous efforts, this testbed significantly increases the hosting and evaluation capabilities of physically separate control units. To improve flexibility and affordability, surrogate control platforms were chosen that enable real-time execution but may not have all characteristics of the deployed hardware. As surrogate platforms and power system simulation are linked by digital communication means, the need for individual channel rewiring is avoided and replaced by automation for experiment reconfiguration, enabling the integrated testbed to support dynamic selection and execution of a large number of experiments.

Data are presented on the performance trials of the USNS SUMNER with a comparison of ship performance before and after the addition of a skeg. The USNS SUMNER (T-AGS 61) was one of six T-AGS 60 (PATHFINDER) Class oceanographic survey ships operated by the Military Sealift Command (MSC) for the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO). The primary mission of these ships is to conduct surveys of ocean bottom regions. The T-AGS 60 Class ships are mono-hulls with wide, flat stern areas that provide very little lateral projected surface area. Previous model tests and ship trials of USNS MARY SEARS (T-AGS 65) demonstrated that the ship is directionally unstable. The addition of a skeg improved directional stability of the model and MARY SEARS. Spiral maneuvers with the USNS SUMNER demonstrated similar results in pre- and post-test trials. Details of the performance calculations of the USNS SUMNER are provided with uncertainty estimates. By comparison of the ship data without the skeg to the data with the skeg, the relative difference in power averaged 28 % higher without the skeg over a speed range of 4 – 15 knots. The average speed is 6.5 % lower for the ship without the skeg at the same shaft speed.

Munitions are encountered in a variety of underwater environments as unexploded ordnance (UXO) or munitions and explosives of concern (MEC). These items can cause unacceptable explosive risks to critical infrastructure, recreational divers, and fishermen. The primary goal of the demonstrations was to validate an underwater suite of tools that can be used to render underwater UXO and MEC safe in shallow water (i.e., up to 100 ft). US Navy underwater ranges in the Gulf of Mexico, south of the Naval Support Activity–Panama City, were selected for the first two demonstrations to fully display the integrated system by processing inert munitions, such as the Navy 5 in./38 cal and the Army 105 mm High Explosive (HE) M1 projectile. The third demonstration, however, occurred at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Crane, Lake Glendora Test Facility, in Sullivan, Indiana. Twenty US Army 105 mm HE M1 projectiles filled with TNT were successfully processed. Overall, this project showed that Gradient Technology’s high-pressure waterjet demilitarization technology can be reliably operated underwater at depths less than 100 ft of seawater when the supporting equipment is located on the deck of a vessel or floating pier system.

A lo largo del tiempo, el acero se ha producido a través de diferentes procesos físico-químicos y empleado como material estructural desde mediados del siglo XVIII en la industria de la construcción. Inicialmente su uso se limitaba a la industria naval pero alrededor de 1908 se comenzaron a fabricar las primeras vigas de patín ancho y su empleo se extendió a la construcción de puentes y edificaciones. Como material en las estructuras el acero presenta muchas ventajas en comparación con otros, como por ejemplo su alta resistencia, tenacidad, uniformidad, durabilidad elasticidad y ductilidad. Por otra parte, también presenta desventajas como la corrosión, fractura frágil, altas temperaturas, fatiga y pandeo. No obstante, el comportamiento mecánico del acero es interesante y a través del análisis de curvas esfuerzo - deformación se pueden obtener algunas propiedades mecánicas importantes para el diseño estructural, como el esfuerzo último, esfuerzo de fluencia, módulo elástico, módulo de endurecimiento, módulo de rigidez y relación de Poisson. Existen diferentes aceros estructurales regulados por la ASTM (en inglés, American Society for Testing and Materials). En Colombia, éste material está regulado por el ICONTEC (Instituto Colombiano de Normas Técnicas), por medio de las NTC (Normas Técnicas Colombianas) y la Norma Sismorresistente Colombiana NSR-10 permite su uso como material estructural

La magnitud y severidad de la reciente crisis financiera, que experimentó su mayor intensidad entre 2008 y 2012, ha repercutido profundamente en las bases de la estructura económica europea. Además del impacto de la crisis en el bienestar de los ciudadanos, una de su consecuencias más significativas se manifestaron en la capacidad de financiación de las empresas, que vieron cómo sus canales tradicionales de financiación se restringieron. Estas restricciones fueron más severas en las empresas medianas y pequeñas, que tienen una menor diversificación de canales o proveedores de financiación. Las políticas del Banco Central Europeo (BCE), que han supuesto una gran inyección de liquidez al sistema, han posibilitado paliar dichas restricciones. De acuerdo con los datos de la encuesta SAFE1, el número de empresas que considera la financiación como un obstáculo para su actividad se ha visto reducida, aunque continúa siendo uno de los factores negativos más importantes. No obstante, las restricciones de financiación son un problema de recurrencia periódica y especialmente crítico para las pequeñas y medianas empresas (pymes) por su mayor exposición a este. Por ello, es necesario complementar y mejorar el funcionamiento de las estrategias de financiación mediante la generación de una cultura financiera más sofisticada, la homogeneización de la información disponible y la diversificación de proveedores financieros. Ante este escenario, se ha considerado oportuno analizar las condiciones de financiación de las empresas, los principales instrumentos financieros disponibles actualmente y su situación financiera. El Informe se compone de seis capítulos. Tras un primer capítulo introductorio, en el capítulo 2, se relata brevemente la situación del contexto y se elabora un diagnóstico respecto a la necesidad de diversificar los proveedores de financiación. En el capítulo 3, se describen los canales de financiación de las empresas, con particular atención a la situación de las pymes. En el capítulo 4, por su parte, se realiza la actualización del análisis económico-financiero de la empresa vasca entre 2008 y 2014, adoptando el enfoque de comparación indirecta desarrollado en Navarro (2015). Finalmente, en el capítulo 5, se presenta el desarrollo analítico de un modelo de riesgo de crédito de la empresa vasca comparándola con el contexto español.
