Résumé :
Endotoxins are cell wall components of Gram-negative bacteria. A release of endotoxins into the human blood stream results in an inflammation reaction that can lead to life-threatening conditions like sepsis. Therefore, control for endotoxin contamination of intravenously administered drugs is crucial. Drugs are usually tested for putative endotoxin contamination with Limulus-based tests. However, validity of the compendial test procedures is questioned in the case of low endotoxin recovery (LER). To assure validity, regulatory authorities request hold-time studies of endotoxin in addition to pharmacopoeial requirements. Within these studies, endotoxin is added (spiked) to an undiluted product. The spiked product is held for a certain period of time and subsequently diluted for endotoxin determination. Due to the known heterogeneity of endotoxin the question has been raised as to which source represents the most adequate endotoxin spike. In the present study, endotoxin hold-time studies were analyzed by using different sources of endotoxin. Highly purified endotoxin, crude endotoxin extracts (Naturally Occurring Endotoxin) from different bacterial species and varied growth conditions as well as endogenous endotoxin contaminations were investigated. The results clearly demonstrate that endotoxin masking—an effect of LER—is dependent on the endotoxin source used. Various parameters such as bacterial strain and growth conditions lead to different masking susceptibilities. Due to these effects it is impossible to predict the susceptibility of bacterial endotoxin contamination to LER. In order to determine whether a sample is prone to LER, an endotoxin spike that is susceptible to LER is required.

Résumé :
There seems to be enough information available on how different types of radiation may affect human health. There also seems to be adequate research made about NORM and how to handle this phenomenon. The image put forth by this study shows that the appearance of NORM within affected industries do not appear surprising or difficult to deal with. On the contrary it seems to be a well-known issue and safety measures have been adapted accordingly. It appears as if these issues have been overlooked regarding the systems where LNG is being used as a marine fuel. There is not enough data to conclude whether NORM is an issue or not in such systems.

Résumé :
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 1998.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 69-71).
Methods for developing realistic haptic (force feedback) simulations of soils and rocks are presented. Mathematical models of the dynamics of a virtual probe mechanically interacting with a virtual object are developed to provide the basis for analysis and simulation. The models then incorporate stochastic inputs in order to provide the haptic simulations with a more natural, less synthetic feel. The stochastic input parameters are derived by analyzing actual force data sensed while probing a subject media with the haptic display itself; in this case used as a force controlled manipulator. A method for sensing friction properties of rigid, textured surfaces and using the data collected to drive a realistic haptic texture simulation is presented. Static friction coefficients and surface height deviations a e sensed by directly stroking the surface under examination with a probe fitted on the end of a PHANToM haptic display device. Test surfaces range from pieces of sandpaper of varying coarseness to acetate. A simulation of the texture may then be rendered using the mechanical model of textured surface-probe interaction augmented by statistical variation of the friction properties of the surface. An algorithm is presented for adding texture properties to three-dimensional object models. The method is based on determining surface normals of the virtual object and assigning statistically varying friction properties and surface height deviations to area patches on the object's surface using the methods described above. Finally, a dynamic model of probe/soil interaction is used to render a haptic simulation of loose grained soils such as sand. Certain friction properties are again statistically varied in order to improve the realism of haptic display user's experience.

Résumé :
Using data from naturally occuring Polish conversations this chapter demonstrates how speakers of Polish answer polar questions. It offers a detailed conversation analytic examination of two response formats, particularly in their unexpanded form: (i) particle responses, which are used for confirming the terms and the action agenda of the question and which display the participants’ understanding of the status of the question as subsidiary to a larger course of action and (ii) repetitional responses, which are understood to do more than simple confirmation (e.g., to fullfil requests). By identifying the interactional circumstances for the choice of a particular format of a response, the chapter highlights the importance of social action as key to building and understanding polar question-answer sequences in Polish.

Résumé :
A mathematical model has been developed that describes the silicon composition gradient produced in germanium-silicon alloy crystals which have been formed via Czochralski crystal growing. This model is based on the naturally occuring segregation effect of silicon in germanium. In addition the refractive index of the alloy is described in terms of its relation to the band gap energy, which is itself dependent on the silicon concentration. A relationship between refractive index and the silicon compositon of the alloy is then derived.

Résumé :
Naphthenic acids (NAs) are naturally-occuring cylic and aromatic fatty acids found in a variety of crude oils. Naphthenic acids and their neutralized form, sodium naphthenates (NaN), have been identified as the main surface-active species present in bitumenous oils, controlling most of their interfacial behavior. Different from other fatty acids, that upon neutralization undergo phase inversion and experience ultralow IFT, naphthenic acids do not produce such ultralow interfacial tension. This presentation introduces a discussion about the possible reasons that explain this unusual behavior. Some of those reasons include the possibility of extremely hydrophilic and hydrophobic components in the NA + NaN mixture, similar to the behavior of hydrophilic and lipophilic linkers used in microemulsion formulations. It has been previously shown that mixtures of hydrophilic and lipophilic linkers do not produce microemulsions (and thus ultralow interfacial tensions), but that with addition of a small amount of a surfactant of intermediate hydrophobicity, they can self-assemble to produce large bicontinuous microemulsions. This idea is explored in this work to produce low to ultralow interfacial tensions with partially neutralized naphthenic acids in the presence of a model oil. The potential implications and applications of these findings are discussed.

Résumé :
Introduction: Most of you are primarily interested in ground water, by that I mean well water. I don’t believe anyone here uses a surface water source for either product water or in plant drinking water or so you think. I have had some surprises from Florida ground water acting like surface water. When hunting for reasons it was explained that water perculating through your soil acts almost like a huge lake or river with varying levels of naturally occuring contaminants and man made pollutants present depending on location and magnitude of source. I have had trouble with this since during the depression when my family lived on a grove in Lake County. Our well was driven into the limestone aquifer and my father was firmly convinced this was the best water in the entire State of Florida. In retrospect, I can never recall tasting better water, however it was hard as a rock and during the “monsoons” that occasionally came our way the well water took on a brown color just like the lake and cat-tail swamp across the road. Wells driven into the limestone aquifer, even in the artisian region below impermiable cap rock may be subject to significant surface intrusion. Paper published with permission.
